City Council Gives Unanimous Support to Establish a New Elementary School

The three proposed city-owned parcels near Don Estridge Middle School | source: singerforboca.com A new elementary school could potentially be in the works for the City of Boca Raton. The City Council gave unanimous support to resolution 18-2018, which is a resolution from the City of Boca Raton supporting the establishment of a new public elementary school on city-owned land in the vicinity of Spanish River Boulevard, west of I-95 and east of north Military Trail. City Councilmember Scott Singer proposed three locations for the new school, all in city-owned parcels near Don Estridge Middle School, and far away from the existing fields at Count De Hoernle Park. The Palm Beach School District already has budgeted funds for a new

school in south Palm Beach County, and with a potential location for the school just outside Boca Raton falling through in December, Boca Raton found itself in a perfect scenario to add yet another elementary school in the City. Resolution 18-2018 would not interfere with the existing plans to rebuild school buildings for Addison Mizner Elementary, Verde Elementary, and the expansion of Spanish River High School, it’s a whole new resolution altogether. A new elementary school would facilitate the temporary move of students that will need to be relocated from Addison Mizner during their rebuild. According to Singer, down the road, this elementary school could also expand to a middle school.

Installation of Arresting System Completed at the Boca Raton Airport The Boca Raton Airport Authority has completed a major safety enhancement with the completion of the new Engineered Materials Arresting System (EMAS) installation and airfield electrical upgrades at the Boca Raton Airport. While the EMAS arrestor bed installation for the departure end of Runway 5 was finished in July 2016, the construction of the arrestor bed at the departure end of Runway 23 was completed this fall. EMAS is a bed of cellular material customized for the Boca Raton Airport and designed to crush under the weight of an aircraft, allowing the aircraft to stop and passengers and crew to exit safely. The project also included the installation of LED runway end identifier lights and relocation of thresh-

old light assemblies, as well as the installation of a touchscreen Airfield Lighting Control and Monitoring System (ALCMS) in the Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) cab and the airfield electrical vault. These additional lighting systems complement the EMAS arrestor beds that were installed at each end of the runway providing increased safety for pilots, passengers, and motorists on nearby roadways. “The EMAS system is an investment in the future of our Airport and the safety of everyone who uses it,” said Boca Raton Airport Executive Director Clara Bennett. “This advancement further solidifies the role of the Airport as a premier general aviation facility serving South Florida communities.”

from four medicals schools. These healthcare experts coach guests on how to live a more healthful lifestyle through noninvasive testing and information sharing. Best of all those with disabilities and their caregivers can have their medical questions answered by the Bash’s team of volunteer doctors and nurses. Even registered pharmacists will be available to discuss drug interactions. Additionally nutritionists will guide guests in creating more healthful eating habits, while professional yoga and meditation teachers will coach attendees in utilizing relaxation techniques to help manage stress, pain and other issues. Kechi Okwuchi, a rising star from last season’s AMERICA’S GOT TALENT, will perform at this year’s Bash. Ms. Okwuchi has overcome incredible physical and emotional challenges, along with dozens of surgeries, after surviving a fiery plane crash that killed all but two of the 109 passengers aboard her flight. Now she inspires others with her extraordinary voice and her compelling story. “We are so proud to reach this milestone in our history,” says Jay Van Vechten, Bash director. “This will be the first time we’ve ever held the event on a Sunday, but because of so many national holidays fall on weekends next March we found the first Sunday of the month to be the ideal time for us to celebrate this important anniversary. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this special day.”

January is National Mentoring Month, Will you Consider Mentoring a Youth? The sad, but not altogether shocking, news that one in three young people will grow up without a nurturing adult in their lives puts a new focus on the urgency of matching at-risk kids with a caring adult mentor. This month we are observing National Mentoring Month, and this week – Thursday to be specific – we paused to say “Thanks” to all the men and women who are helping a young person on his or her path to adulthood and beyond. As most of you already know, I have been a Pied Piper for mentoring for some time. I strongly believe in mentoring programs. I have seen, time after time, how introducing a caring adult in the life of a troubled youth can turn his or her life around. We, as adults, can create the perfect mentoring scenarios that

help young people hone decisionmaking and leadership skills. I think back on the time, not long ago, when we encouraged a group of recalcitrant high school boys to take on a leadership role in a project. Those boys poured their hearts in because we treated them as leaders rather than assume it was a quality they lacked. While we may not have called them mentors then, you and I can point to the coach, the neighbor and the caring adult who sparked and supported our personal and professional success. If you have not yet started, I urge you to consider becoming a mentor and giving our at-risk kids a real chance at a future. If you are already a mentor, keep charging! There will be times when you feel your effort is futile. Being a lifeline for young boys for more than three decades, I declare

that you are making a whale of a difference. Your caring attitude assures these young people that they do matter, that someone cares about them, and it tells them that they are not alone as they deal with the dayto-day challenges. Thanks to your supportive relationships, 55 percent of young people who were at-risk of falling off track are more likely to enroll in college, according to statistics compiled by the National Mentoring Partnership in Boston. Countless others will go on to be productive heads of their households, serve in the armed forces and most of all become respectful men and women. All because of your unselfish spirit. It is so crucial that our young people have a consistent, affirming adult presence in their lives. In 2018, KOP Mentoring Network

is committed to doing our part to make a long-term impact for our atrisk youth in South Florida. Earlier this month, we launched the STREAM3 Academy for young men and ladies in Riviera Beach. Thanks to our committed partners such as Microsoft, Center for Creative Education, Florida Power & Light, Royal Life Centers, Restoration Bridge, Chick-fil-A and the Riviera Beach Community Redevelopment Agency, we are exposing these young people to coding, digital photography and editing. Mentoring is a proven way to help our youths. Breaking the cycle of generational poverty and the societal ills it often spawns is in everyone’s best interest. We just need a few more people like you to do it. May we count on you to do your part?

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

You Can Develop a Better Attitude! There are situations in life which are difficult to resolve. Even then, they are not impossible to eradicate. People cannot hold on to past miseries and expect a joyous present. Garbage cannot be accumulated for years without causing toxic, even fatal, effects on one’s self and on others. People cannot hold on to bad memories or to accumulated resentments and still demand happiness now. That won’t ever happen! The retention of poison anywhere shall always adversely affect the surrounding environment. A wise individual fully recognizes that there comes a time when

the only sane attitude is to exclaim: “Enough is enough! I must move on without being bound to all the extra baggage which I’ve allowed to accumulate in my life; the toxic levels I have permitted to develop are truly killing me and adversely affecting some of my relationships.” Any advance in life requires a final farewell to what cannot contribute to a healthy and meaningful present or future. Many times, even good things have to be left behind in favor of something much better which can contribute to a progressive life of meaning. Nobody can advance in any endeavor while chained to anything, especially to

unpleasant experiences of the past. The secret is to let go! Many people endure a miserable existence by holding grudges, by accumulating resentments, by retaining hatred to individuals and situations which caused them distress in the past. If retaliation, and an unforgiven spirit prevails, nothing shall ever be resolved, and the misery one already experiences shall only retain its grip and augment in its intensity. So, why remain in shackles for so long when true freedom can be your portion? There needs to be a greater sense of urgency in dealing with these matters, by people prone to

choose slavery instead of the enjoyment of full liberation. Nothing shall ever be resolved when a spirit of vengeance, accusation, faultfinding prevails. What one inwardly wants to see resolved will simply increase its hold on the person dominated by self-righteousness. Sadly, some people also go to their grave with unresolved issues which never required resolution to start with. Many fail to recognize that sometimes the obvious is not the actual. Furthermore, one’s point of view depends on one’s point of viewing. Avoid irrational thoughts, attitudes, and self-serving suspicions and unreal expectations!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

FAU Online MBA Student Takes Home Top Prize in Competition By: James Hellegaard Jazmin Campos-Chiodin stood in the rarefied air on the 12th floor of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and sensed what a special opportunity she had before her. Campos-Chiodin, who is enrolled in the Online MBA program in Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business, was part of a select group of students from around the world who had been invited to participate in the X-Culture Symposium in Miami, sponsored by Seminole Gaming/Hard Rock International. She was one of just 150 students from 43 countries invited to attend the event. Split into 21 teams of seven to eight students each to compete in a Business Consulting Challenge, Campos-Chiodin and her teammates found themselves in a part of the casino normally reserved for VIPs, where they spent two hours talking with Jim H. Osceola III, a member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida and senior vice president of hospitality for Seminole Gaming. “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Campos-Chiodin said. “We got to sit with him for two hours in one of their suites and just talk about the company, about his family, about why gaming was the culture in the company. We got all this insider information from the man that helps run this company.” It was proven to be time well spent. Campos-Chiodin and her teammates were selected as the winning team by the executives from the Seminole Gaming/Hard Rock International and won the challenge. The competition began last spring when she became involved in X-Culture through an online course she took at FAU on International Business Operations, taught by Daniel Rottig, Ph.D, associate graduate faculty member. Part of the course is the X-Culture International Student Collaboration Project, which provides each student with an opportunity to work in virtual teams with approximately 5,000 fellow graduate students from more than 40 countries and act as consultants for real multinational corporations working on an international business expansion project throughout the academic term. “Each of my Online MBA

students worked in a separate team with peers from around the world on a different international business challenge,” Rottig explained. “This innovative project therefore engaged my students beyond traditional online course activities and had considerable impact.” Campos-Chiodin was selected as one of the top 50 students (representing 22 countries) this academic year and invited to attend the annual 2017 AIB Southeast USA conference in Washington D.C. In the weeks leading up to the conference, the top 50 X-Culture students from around the world worked in 10 teams of five students each on a business challenge for Perkins Management Services. The student teams then presented their solution to the challenge and business proposal at the conference to Perkins’ CEO Nicholas Perkins, his executive team and conference participants. Campos-Chiodin’s team came in second and won the 2017 X-Culture Team Challenge Runner Up Award. At the 2017 AIB-SE conference in Washington D.C., the top 50 X-Culture students from around the world were also tasked with pitching a business idea to a panel of potential investors or employers in a real elevator at the conference location. The result? Campos-Chiodin won the 2017 X-Culture Business Proposal Elevator Pitch Award. Soon after, she was asked by Vasyl Taras, Ph.D., founder of XCulture, to join the X-Culture team and assist with the expansion of X-Culture Academy. She gladly accepted and is currently working with Taras on the launching of the pilot program for XCulture Kids and Teens. Working with students from different countries presented many logistical and cultural challenges, Campos-Chiodin said. She learned that everyone communicates, handles stress and overcomes obstacles differently, but that doesn’t mean they can’t understand each other. “Regardless of how weak or strong I felt, I needed them to make it up there,” she said of her teammates. “By yourself there’s no way you can sell a product to someone just on your own. You can’t develop it, produce it and check everything, because one person is not perfect. But when you have more than one mind working on it perfection is attainable.”

An experience of a lifetime. Diveheart Military Wounded (DMW) DMW’s mission based diving philosophy gives veteran participants that purpose again, helping them cope with their “New Normal” — invigorating the spirit and the imagination of each veteran with disabilities.

FAITH By Rick Boxx

Avoiding Bitterness Over Workplace Failures

By Robert Weinroth • The 4th Annual Miracle Chef, held on Friday, January 19th and hosted by Boca Helping Hands, was a wonderful evening filled with food, fun and a great message. Boca Helping Hands is building bridges as it provides a hand up, helping clients cross from basic need to selfsufficiency. The Miracle Chef event (along with all the meals BHH serves) would not be possible without their generous Food Recovery Partners. The evening was a huge success due, in part, the Event’s celebrity judges: Sal Saldana, General Manager of Town Center at Boca Raton, Renata Sans de Negri, President of Junior League of Boca Raton and Gourmet Chef Lawrence S. Demme. • There are a group of dedicated and philanthropic individuals who make it possible for the City of Boca Raton to boast it is the venue of choice for the Boca Raton Museum of Art. We call these people “Art Benefactors” and for this group of supporters, the Museum offered an opening reception of several new exhibits. • Now through April 8th, come see “small paintings” by Alex Katz and the drawings and sculptures of Arthur Carter. For more Information about these and other exhibits, go to: www.BocaMuseum.org/ • Don’t miss the 32nd Annual Museum Art Festival, Saturday & Sunday (Feb 3rd & 4th) from 10AM - 5PM - for more information on the Art Festival, go to: www.BocaMuseum.org/events/32nd-annual-museum-artfestival • The streets of Mizner Park will once again be filled with a tremendous selection of art from across the country as the Boca Raton Museum of Art presents one-of-a-kind art, available for purchase including painting, sculptures, jewelry, fiber art, photography, ceramics, pottery, wood art, mixed media, graphic design, crafts, and art glass. Art Festival proceeds help support the Museum’s educational programs for children and youth. Admission is complimentary and free parking is available in the garages at Mizner Park. This juried art festival is presented by the Museum in partnership with the City of Boca Raton, Florida Palm Beach County Cultural Council, the Palm Beach County Tourism and Development Council, and General Growth Partners. • The Wings of Freedom exhibit landed in Boca Raton this week. This interactive presentation of vintage aircraft used in WWII is part of a traveling exhibit presented by the Collins Foundation. The Collings Foundation is a non-profit, Educational Foundation, founded in 1979. The purpose of the Foundation is to preserve and exhibit rare historical artifacts and to organize and support “living history” events that enable Americans to learn more about their heritage through direct participation.

goals: to honor the sacrifices made by our veterans that allow us to enjoy our freedom; and to educate the visitors, especially younger Americans, about our national history and heritage. The Foundation encourages people to tour the planes, talk to the veterans who come to visit the aircraft, and participate in a “flight experience”. In twenty-six years, the tour has made more than 2,900 visits to airports across the United States and Alaska. While the exact number of visitors is difficult to gauge, it is estimated that between 3.5 and 4 million people see these war birds annually. • The Palm Beach County Alliance for Mental Health held its 5th Annual Voice Awards Luncheon at Broken Sound County Club on Tuesday January 23rd. The awards honor the commitment, action and service in mental health of a diverse group of individuals within our community. The event was sponsored by Boca Raton’s Promise, led by Alliance Chair, Rita Thrasher, and Ed Frontera and hosted by IAM1. • Seven-time Emmy Award-winner (Pixar’s UP, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Lou Grant) Ed Asner was in Boca Raton on Tuesday afternoon. He performed at the Adolph & Rose Levis JCC Zinman Hall for a dramatic reading of the Soap Myth. • The Inner Circle New Year Kick opened the new year for Tri County Animal Rescue on Tuesday evening at the Pinon Grill Restaurant. Complimentary Cuisine and Drink Specials were enjoyed by all while raising funds for the TriCounty Animal Rescue new campus. • It’s Literacy Week in Boca Raton and members of the City Council have been visiting area schools to read to the children. On Wednesday I spent a special morning with some very special students at Boca Raton Elementary School in the Ben Carson Reading Room to celebrate. There’s nothing more fun than seeing the face of the children as we read stories and learned lessons. • The 2018 Greek Festival has begun and runs through January 28th. OPA! Get ready for a fun weekend of food, dancing, and “kefi” at the St. Mark Greek Orthodox Church grounds. • HotWorks.org will present the 9th Annual Boca Raton Fine Art Show™ on January 27 & 28, 2018 in downtown Boca Raton on Saturday & Sunday from 10AM-5PM at Sanborn Square Park on East Boca Raton Road and NE 1st Ave. Affected streets will be closed to vehicular traffic at 3PM on Friday January 26th and re-open on or before 10PM Sunday January 28th. Downtown Boca Raton is the perfect venue for a beautiful art show, featuring an exclusive collection of high-quality, original, and refreshingly unique artwork created by a wide range of exceptional students.

When functioning properly, business partnerships can be productive, efficient – and enjoyable. But when they fail, one or more parties in the relationship can suffer great mental and emotional distress. Just as with any failure in the workplace, a failed business partnership can be devastating. A case in point involved my friend, Don. His once-thriving, positive relationship with his business partner began deteriorating due to differences in values and philosophy about how they should operate on a daily basis with customers and suppliers. Eventually these conflicts could not be resolved and their partnership came to a regrettable end. As a consequence of dissolving the partnership, Don incurred large financial losses personally. The disappointment of losing a relationship that once held great promise was bad enough. But the impact on him financially greatly intensified his sense of failure and feelings of frustration. A common, even understandable response for many people in such circumstances would be feelings of bitterness and betrayal. However, when Don felt those emotions beginning to rise up inside, he chose to take immediate, evasive action. Instead of allowing what can be termed “a root of bitterness” to destroy what remained of his relationship with the ex-business partner, Don chose to pursue a peaceful resolution. He made this determination not for the benefit of the former partner, but for himself, understanding how bitterness could affect other areas of his life. As Don admitted to me, “When I feel hurt, it can cause me to close myself off to others. I do not want this situation to undermine my other relationships.”

The Bible speaks directly to this reality. Hebrews 12:14-15 says, “Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled.” The emotion of bitterness can be destructive, acting similar to cancer in the human body. If allowed to grow unchecked, it can destroy us and everyone crossing our paths. So like excising a cancerous tumor, bitterness must be dealt with and removed before it can cause irreparable damage. Jesus addressed this when He spoke of how we should respond when treated unfairly. “You have heard that it was said, an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ “But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. “If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also” (Matthew 5:38-40). We might argue, “Yes, but after what they did to me, I cannot just let them go without reacting in some way.” Jesus taught that for us as His followers, that “some way” should not be to punish or seek revenge, but rather to offer forgiveness – even when it is not deserved, or even requested. To forgive and then to move on is more for our benefit than for those who have done us harm. Without question, business dealings that have gone bad can cause bitterness, but by God’s grace, and in our pursuit of peace – rather than seeking to escalate the conflict – bitterness does not have to follow.

SPORTS Gabriel Bravo Returns for 2018 NPSL Season

Boca Raton Football Club is pleased to announce the return of Gabriel Bravo for the 2018 NPSL Season. The left-back returns to Boca Raton after a successful 2017 NPSL season which saw the 20-year old appear and start in seven NPSL matches, playing a total of 575 minutes in the NPSL season alone. “We are incredibly delighted to bring back Gabriel home,” said president Douglas Heizer. “Gabriel has been part of our organization since its inception and bringing him back for the 2018 season is very important to us.” While at Boca Raton FC, Bravo won the 2015 and the 2016 APSL Championship as well as the 2015 and 2016 APSL Fall Tournaments. “Bravo is a proven winner,” added head coach Jim Rooney. “He is a quality left-back, he’s dedicated, he’s committed, and

that’s the kind of players I’m looking for to build our NPSL squad around.” A local product through and through, Bravo played two years at Boca Raton High School where he captained the team to the 2016 State Championship. Bravo was selected as the Palm Beach County Player of the Year as a senior after scoring 13 goals and tallying 20 assists. As a junior, Bravo earned first-team allcounty honors after scoring 18 goals with 13 assists. After a successful high school career, Bravo played his freshman year of college at Flagler College up in St. Augustine. “I’m thrilled to be back with Boca Raton FC for the third year,” said Bravo. “Boca Raton FC is my second family and there’s no other team I’d rather play for than my hometown club.”

Lynn Basketball Holds off Palm Beach Atlantic in Final Seconds By: Michael Demyan After a strong first half, the Lynn University Fighting Knights held off a late push from the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish on the road Saturday evening to win 75-73. The win extended their winning streak to four games and in the process have brought their overall (8-7) and conference (5-4) records over .500 for the first time this season. “We’ve just been sticking to the game plan through these last four games and that’s been helping us a lot more,” point guard Brandon Bornelus said. “Our defense has been the best I’ve ever seen it been for the whole season.” The Sailfish started off the scoring with a three-pointer from Dakota Zinser, but the Fighting Knights’ Kevin O’Brien answered back with one of his own 12 seconds later. The lead repeatedly changed hands until Lynn began to slowly inch away, holding a 27-19 lead with 7:37 remaining in the half. The Sailfish looked like they were about to hang on to contention, bringing the score back to within six thanks to a layup from Jules Jasmin, but the Fighting Knights kicked it back into high gear with a 9-0 run. All nine points were scored by Bornelus off of a layup that turned into a three-point play and two three-pointers. Suddenly Lynn held a commanding 38-23 lead with just over five minutes left before halftime. Lynn’s stellar shooting continued with help from O’Brien on the defensive end. After his defensive rebound lead to a basket by Bornelus, he stole the ball on PBA’s next possession. After a timeout,

www.bocaratontribune.com

Ryan Peterson took it in for the easy layup. While the Sailfish still hadn’t found their offensive stride, they were able to keep the Fighting Knights scoreless for the final three minutes of the half, which showed a preview of what was to come when play resumed. The scoreless stretch continued for another two minutes into the second half before Lynn’s Jamal Palmer found the basket, but with just 11 minutes left in the game, they still held onto a commanding 17-point lead. The Sailfish started to gain momentum though, leading to a slam dunk from Grant Gullet. It was part of a 14-0 run which brought them to only a threepoint deficit with just under two minutes remaining. Lynn’s Rasheed Worrell finally put an end to the run with a dunk of his own and with 53 seconds left, the Fighting Knights added on to extend their lead to five. The slight comfort would not last long however, as PBA’s Marshall Riddle sunk an important three-pointer, bringing them back to within two with only 46 seconds left in the game. It all came down to the final two seconds. Gullet drove to the basket and missed a layup and the Fighting Knights narrowly escaped with the 75-73 victory. Palmer led the Fighting Knights with 22 points, including making 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Bornelus also had a strong night with 19 points and a careerhigh seven assists. Michael Baez (14) and Worrell (10) reached double digit points as well. It was the first win for Lynn against the Sailfish in three years.
