In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care. The annual Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 29th year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures. The U.S. NewsBest Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely or entirely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators. “For nearly 30 years, U.S. News has strived to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “By providing the most comprehensive data available, we give patients and their physicians’ information to support their search for the best care across a range of specialties.”

FAU Medical Students Receive First Doctor’s White Coat Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine celebrated its eighth White Coat Ceremony to officially welcome its newest medical students during this symbolic event, which took place in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium on the Boca Raton campus. “I am honored to join our community in welcoming the members of the class of 2022 into the profession of medicine as they begin their journeys to becoming highly humanistic physicians,” said Phillip M. Boiselle, M.D., dean of FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine. “The white coat is a symbol of your professional and ethical obligations to uphold the sacred trust of providing humanistic health care.” Stuart L. Markowitz, M.D., senior associate dean for student affairs and admissions in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine, served as the master of ceremonies. FAU President John Kelly, and Michael T.B. Dennis, M.D., FAU Medicine’s advisory board chair and a member of the FAU Board of Trustees, provided remarks prior to the white coat cloaking. “Class of 2022, you are beginning your journey to follow in the footsteps of many selfless physicians and others who have served humanity in countless ways,” said Markowitz. “Today, and for the rest of your careers, remember that your white coat, which symbolizes our profession, is a reflection of who you are and how you conduct yourself.” The event program included a keynote address delivered by the college’s
named benefactor Barbara Schmidt, who is passionate about mentoring the next generation of leaders and is the author of the internationally bestselling book, The Practice: Simple Tools for Managing Stress, Finding Inner Peace, and Uncovering Happiness. She founded the non-profit Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life with the mission to further inner peace and bring mindfulness teachings to the global community. Today, Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life has more than six million followers on social media. Following the keynote address, students were cloaked with their white coats by Markowitz and Jennifer W. Caceres, M.D., assistant dean for student affairs and an associate professor of Integrated Medical Science in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine. Each student was pinned with a “Humanism in Medicine” lapel pin by a member of the class of 2021. At the conclusion of the event, the students recited in unison an
“oath” they collectively wrote, which will serve as a code of conduct they are committed to following throughout their education and as physicians after medical school. The members of the class of 2022 were selected among 3,411 applicants and range in age from 20 to 29. Twenty-three percent of the class are from groups underrepresented in medicine and will continue to contribute to the college's mission to enhance diversity in the physician workforce. Fourteen members of the class received their bachelor’s degree from FAU. Although most of the class members majored in traditional pre-med subjects, the class also is made up of students who have non-science majors. Approximately 85 percent of the incoming class are Florida residents. Most of the major colleges in Florida are represented including students from FAU, the University of Florida, Florida State University, University of
Central Florida, Florida A&M University and Florida Gulf Coast University. Other students in the class attended undergraduate institutions such Vanderbilt University, New York University, the University of California, the University of Notre Dame, George Washington University and the University of Michigan, among others. Each student’s white coat was sponsored by members of the community as well as local businesses through a special fundraising event – White Coats-4-Care – co-chaired by Bonnie and Jon Kaye, Kaye Communications, Inc. The event also raises funds to provide vital student scholarships. Following the White Coat Ceremony, students and guests enjoyed a special reception generously underwritten by Dennis. The White Coat Ceremony was founded in 1993 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The Foundation concluded that the beginning of a student’s journey into medicine is the best time to influence standards of professionalism, humanistic values and behavior. As a community-based medical school, the Schmidt College of Medicine’s mission is to advance the health and wellbeing of the community by training future generations of humanistic clinicians and scientists. The college’s core values are Collaboration, Innovation, Respect, Compassion, Lifelong learning and Engagement (CIRCLE).

Paying Eternal Respect to a Natural Woman That commanding voice is hushed, Her loving heart is still. The iconic Queen of Soul we love so dearly, is resting at God’s will. I never met Aretha Franklin, however, I was like the millions of fans who grew up adoring her music, dancing and artistic spirit. I however saw her perform a few times including at President Barak Obama’s inauguration. When I heard that the Queen went into hospice care, I began preparing for the inevitable. But when I learned of her passing Thursday night at age 79, I was not prepared for the news. I spent much of Thursday and Friday reading and listening to the many tributes pouring in for her, and they all painted a portrait of a
woman who stood as a cultural icon around the globe. She was a singer, composer and an arranger who reigned over the worlds of R&B, pop, rock and gospel music for nearly six decades. But she was so much more. Despite her remarkable power and range, she was humble. The Queen was known to fill tiny rooms to great halls with her joy, with poignancy, with spiritual lift — and, of course, with dancing. During her lifetime, she performed at the inauguration of three U.S. presidents: Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. She also mingled and sang for Pope Francis in Philadelphia in 2015. Her music, rooted in gospel from the African-American church, crossed myriad genres and boldly evoked and advanced the themes of
the era. She also was a political junkie who was glued to CNN and she loved comedy especially Tyler Perry and his character Madea. She also had a way of connecting with people and genuinely made everyone felt comfortable. During her career, the Queen had 44 Grammy nominations overall and 18 wins, including a lifetime achievement award in 1994. She also had 20 number one singles, including her signature song, “Respect,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and “Chain of Fools.” She was the first woman to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, awarded both a Grammy Legend Award in 1991 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994. She sang with matchless
style and was the gold standard for so many artists who followed her. I can only imagine the celebration there will be in heaven when all those great voices get together. Let’s face it, there will be the great Sam Cook, Dorothy Norwood, the Queen herself, Jim Reeves, Elvis, Whitney Houston and so many more whom I fail to mention. While I am not in a hurry to see or hear them, I hope that when my time has come, I too will be welcomed to add some real baritone to that choir beyond the blue. While I am saddened by her passing, I am comforted knowing that she is no longer suffering from that darn cancer that snatched her away from us and that she is in the Lord’s arms. Farewell Queen, rest in peace.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
The Joy of Conversation Any conversation can and should be a pleasurable experience to its participants. It quickly ceases to be so when the motive of one of the participants is to hurl insults on another, and use dialogue as an excuse for verbal attacks and insults. Without a question, that would lead one nowhere, except into discord, and a gradual breakdown of personal communication, leading to its complete dissolution. It has been correctly observed that “most people do not dialogue; they perform a monologue in the presence of another person.” When this tendency is first noticed, one has the opportunity gently
to indicate to the other party, one’s lack of appreciation for that style of conversational conduct. A true conversation entails opportunities for participation of all involved, of give-andtake, instead of merely hearing only whatever proceeds from the mouth of a domineering talker. Some persons want to be in charge, and think that appointing one’s self to control the topic, the arguments, and the timing of a conversation would provide a reasonable flow of what is to be dealt with. Yet, such is never the case! Anyone involved in conversation of any subject, should study and
know in advance the proper etiquette to participate in productive conversations, yielding beneficial results. It can and should be a time of mutual learning, edification, encouragement, and countless other positive outcomes. Unanimity of acceptance is not a requirement, but respect among its participants is a necessary ingredient in those exchanges! Careful attention must be paid to what is being said or discussed so that illustrations or related issues may be inserted at the appropriate moments during a conversation. Each participant must possess the full freedom broadly to express contributing thoughts to
enrich the dialogue. In response to an idea presented, be attentive to the best moment when to insert a comment, to ask a question, to express any lack of understanding, or even respectfully to disagree with something stated, while clearly offering the alternative suggestion. There are manifold ways of engaging in ongoing conversations about a common topic of interest. The greatest benefits are secured on the basis of sincere interest, respect, and a genuine desire of making a positive difference in the life of one or more participants. I believe such are noble goals to aim at!

Resolving Business Conflicts and Disputes Over the years, I have the privilege – and challenge – of mediating in several disputes between business partners. In most cases, seeking to resolve them is not pretty nor easy, but very necessary. When someone begins to feel slighted by their partner in some way, the relationship can turn ugly quickly. These disputes can result from many factors, but commonly they are spawned by breakdowns in communication. As accusations of “he said,” “she said, “they said” escalate, the threat of lawsuits can begin to soar. Partnerships formed with the best of intentions and greatest of expectations can be destroyed because of a single event – and often, unnecessarily. This is why addressing and working through the problem with care is essential. In the mediation process, proving your position was right should not be the ultimate goal; instead, we need consider how to most effectively work toward a reasonable resolution, one that could be a “win-win” for everyone involved. Speaking to His followers, Jesus made specific observations about interpersonal conflict and how it should be resolved. For instance, He admonished, “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge…”(Matthew 5:25). There are two key principles cited here. First, recognize areas of conflict and resolve them before small problems escalate and turn into major causes of strife. Today we call this “making a mountain out of a molehill.” Jesus’ second point was to avoid, whenever possible, having to take a dispute to a judge and a courtroom to be
settled. Reasons for this are many: - Legal disputes can be costly; Decisions made by judges can seem arbitrary; - Courtroom outcomes usually fail to resolve the relational and emotional issues involved; - The great resources of God’s wisdom and healing power can be excluded from the process. Admittedly, sometimes taking a matter to court is unavoidable. One or more parties may be unwilling to turn to a mediator, or an arbitrator, to allow them to work toward acceptable resolutions. However, that is unfortunate because while it may result in a legal judgment, the likelihood of injured feelings and inability to sustain once-enjoyable business relationships is extremely high. If you’re in a conflict with a partner, secure a wise and rational third party, whom you both trust, to help you settle the matter quickly. The apostle Paul, writing to a group of contentious Christians in the ancient city of Corinth, urged, “If any of you has a dispute with another, do you dare to take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the Lord’s people? Or do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life! Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters, do you ask for a ruling from those whose way of life is scorned in the church? I say this to shame you. Is it possible that there is nobody among you wise enough to judge a dispute between believers?…” (1 Corinthians 6:1-5).

Students Receive Red Carpet Welcome on First Day of Classes
As thousands of children arrived at Village Academy and Carver Middle School for the first day of class on Monday, they got an unexpected surprise. In addition to greetings from teachers and staff, a sea of men were on hand to welcome them — doling out high fives, fist bumps, handshakes and encouraging words. Among the men were CEOs, an emergency room technician, several in suits, some in jeans, some in scrubs and several police and firefighters. Some held posters which read: “We are proud of you,” “We Believe in You,” “Best Wishes this Year” and “Welcome Back.” “We asked fathers, uncles, cousins, grandfathers, mentors and role models to come out and greet our students as they walk into the building,” Village Academy Principal LaToya T. Dixon said. “We want every student to know that we are investing in their education and that we are stressing the importance of coming to school ready to Work Hard, Be Good, and Think for the 2018-2019 school year.” Like the students, some parents were surprised to see the welcome. But parent Saidah Simon was happy to see some diversity in the ranks. “Last year it was mostly men and not many officers,” she said. “But to see Delray Beach police here is a big encouragement to the kids. It says, ‘You can do it,’ and ‘We got your back,’ and ‘We are on your side.’” Monday’s initiative, organized by KOP Mentoring Network, was part of a nationwide move to enhance parent involvement and promote volunteerism
in our schools. It was also an attempt to push forward a new image for black men and fight racial stereotypes, organizers said. One of Dixon’s goals this year was to get fathers, grandfathers and other male role models more involved in students’ school work. “Everyone from our superintendent down recognize the importance of parental involvement,” she said. “So we are encouraging all fathers, grandfathers, and other male caregivers to get involved with their children’s school from day one by taking them to school today.” A Florida Department of Education study found a positive correlation between family involvement and a student’s academic success. Further research also found that when fathers are actively involved in their child’s education, the student earn better grades, score higher on tests, enjoy school, has fewer discipline problems and are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college. “Many of our students come from homes, where they do not have fathers as male role models,” said Cameron Simmons, the ESE coordinator at Carver Middle School and organizer of the 100 Men Welcome Back, which is in its second year. “It is so important that all children have a positive male role model who is doing something good for them, something they can relate to, to give them the idea that they are worthwhile, and education is worthwhile.” It is important to have community supporters to stand in the gap for those students who lack role models, especially on such an important day as the first day of school.”

PBSC Welding Students Create Sculpture for Glades Central High School Welding students at Palm Beach State College’s Belle Glade campus will find their names on a plaque as the creators of a sculpture set for installation at Glades Central High School this fall. The nearly 11-foot, 1,000-pound sculpture will be the centerpiece of a garden at the school, and while the installation date is pending, the finished sculpture is on display at the Belle Glade campus for PBSC students to enjoy. Smaller metal sculptures created by PBSC welding instructors are part of the landscape of the campus. When Glades Central High School instructor Dorn Gordon brought a group of her students to the campus for a tour last October, she admired one created by welding instructor Anton Pastuszak, who is also a recognized metal artist. She instantly envisioned acquiring such a sculpture for the garden she was planning for Glades Central. Pastuszak wouldn’t consider charging for a sculpture. Instead, he saw the real value in having his students make one. “I saw the opportunity for my welding students to do a good deed for the community and develop some skills,” he said. “The skills that are used in making that sculpture are the same skills that are used in the welding profession. It was just a good thing for us to do, and personally, the Glades region has given me so much, it was an honor to give back.” The garden is a schoolwide initiative driven by the students in Glade Central’s AVID program. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness program adopted by more than 6,000 schools in 47 states. It complements the curriculum by teaching skills that students can use to succeed at any level of school, college, or in a career. “One of the AVID initiatives is community service,” said Gordon, an AVID elective instructor. “The students will plant flowers and vegetables to give to the elderly or community organizations. Planting a garden takes time, it takes work, and I wanted my students to see that through hard work, people can benefit. The sculpture will be the focal point in our garden.” Gordon and Pastuszak bounced ideas back and forth, but it was the availability of an eight-foot steel beam that inspired Pastuszak to go big. “I felt we should do something that’s really going to make a statement and stand out.” On and off over the ensuing months, the students in his evening welding class worked on the sculpture. If Pastuszak wanted his students to focus on a particular skill, then they headed out to the sculpture. “A lot of skills that are used in the fabrication industry don’t get developed if you are just welding coupons [test plates] all day long,” he said. “Not many students in welding programs, even nationwide, get to

play around with giant steel beams.” Student Jessica DiTaranto, who has worked in power plants from Florida to the Northeast, enjoyed seeing the sculpture come together from an I-beam to what it is now. “I’ve never really been too big into art, but now seeing the final project, it makes me want to build some for my own yard.” Besides the welding and cutting, the math was the highlight of the project for Gabriel Gaedtke, an electrician and mechanic who joined the class to add to his skill set. “When I came into the program I did not know that you could take one solid beam and heat it up to temperatures where you could bend it, sculpt it and cut it out and actually make a human arm from the dimensions that you took off a classmate’s arm.” The sculpture project has inspired Gaedtke to do more artistic work with metal and large themes. “Just like our school district AVID students, our PBSC students are determined to advance and are focused on success,” said Dr. Maria Vallejo, vice president for growth and expansion and provost of the Belle Glade and Loxahatchee Groves campuses. “The partnership is an excellent way to have our PBSC students be role models of what is possible when you stay the course.” Delighted with the work of Pastuszak and his students, Gordon thinks the sculpture captures her vision perfectly and embodies the power of AVID. “The arm shows the strength of AVID, and so students rise from the earth and are propelled into the world—symbolized by the globe with the AVID student inside. AVID teaches organization, self-discipline, college readiness and goal-setting, and so all of that is within that arm. With AVID supporting you, you can’t help but be successful. The sky’s the limit.” Gordon sees the sculpture collaboration as the beginning of a long-lasting relationship between the College and Glades Central. The project introduced her to the Welding program, which made her realize it’s a viable career for some of her students. “We have a pipeline of students wanting to go into the Welding program,” she said. “Welding is big right now. There’s going to be a great need due to those retiring from the industry, and we want to fill that need.” Meanwhile, one welding student credits the sculpture project for powering his motivation to stick with the program. “It was a great learning experience,” said Nate Stevens, a bartender and server reigniting a past interest in welding. “We started doing the sculpture when the program began, and basically, that’s what caused me to fall in love with welding and torching and everything that goes along with it. I’m grateful that we were able to do it.”

SPORTS FAU Women’s Soccer Engages Two Marcelo Huarte Takes the Reins of In-State Rivals to Open Season Lynn Women’s Golf
The 2018 campaign for Florida Atlantic University women's soccer commences this weekend with two matches against in-state schools, hosting Miami at FAU Stadium Friday before traveling to Gainesville to take on No. 7 Florida on Sunday night. Friday marks the third straight season in which the Owls have kicked off the year at the on-campus football stadium, as FAU and Miami will begin at 7 p.m., and a live stream and broadcast will be available at www.FAUSports.TV. The Hurricanes were 5-11-0 a year ago and Friday will be the first match for Sarah Barnes, the team's new head coach. Last year, the Owls hosted Florida in the opener at this venue. This year, FAU will head to Gainesville for the Gators' second home match of the weekend. It will be a 6 p.m. start, and will be broadcasted live on SEC Network. Florida finished last season 17-7 overall,
advancing to the NCAA quarterfinal round, and was ranked No. 6 in the final United Soccer Coaches poll. They are No. 7 in this year's preseason rankings. The Owls did not face Miami last year, snapping four straight seasons in which the squads met (with the teams even up at 2-2 in that span). Overall, the Hurricanes hold a slim 8-6 edge in the series. In last year's season opener for both teams, UF converted on a penalty kick in overtime to edge FAU, 1-0. That extended the advantage in the all-time series for the Gators to 5-0-1. The next two matches on FAU's docket will both be at home, hosting Denver on Thursday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m., and then facing off against preseason No. 15 Baylor on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. Both will take place at FAU Soccer Stadium and tickets are available by visiting www.FAUSports.com, or by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS.

Lynn University Director of Athletics Devin Crosby today announced the Fighting Knights appointed Marcelo Huarte as the head women's golf coach. Huarte recently served as an assistant coach for the women's and men's golf teams at Barry University, during which the Buccaneers earned the 2017 NCAA Division II championship title in women's golf. He also won back-to-back titles for the Buccaneers as a student athlete in 2013 and 2014 before going pro. "Marcelo has shown a knack for relating and connecting with student athletes, and his golf acumen is extremely advanced," said Crosby. "His personal and professional successes fit our athletics values of Spirit, Service and Strength." Huarte takes the helm of a Lynn program that has won five national championships, most recently consecutive titles in 2013 and 2014, and recorded 31 AllAmerica selections. The 2017-18 squad advanced to the NCAA Super Region 2 Tournament, saw Jenny Ayala named an All-American and logged five Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) AllAmerica Scholar awards. He becomes the seventh coach in the program's national championship history. "I am grateful to Devin Crosby for the opportunity to be head coach of the Lynn women's golf team," said Huarte. lished themselves consistently as one of the top golf programs in Division II and I am honored to lead the program. I look forward to working with the team and to beginning our journey towards success." In addition to earning the national title during his first season coaching at Barry (2016-17), the Buccaneers won a school-record five tournaments, Charlotte Puts was named the WGCA National Freshman of the Year, and three women's golfers earned All-America recognition. Last season, he helped develop Tilda Larsson, who was named the WGCA Division II Player of the Year, while the Bucs also garnered three All-America selections. Not limited to the women's side, Huarte also assisted with the Barry men's golf program as the team advanced to the NCAA Championship national semifinals in 2017-18, and was a national quarterfinalist in 2016-17. Huarte closed out his own collegiate career in 2014, winning national titles in 2013 and 2014, and collecting AllAmerica recognition. He played in 107 rounds over 37 tournaments and carded a 75.02 stroke average and seven rounds in the 60s. Following his time at Barry, he spent two years as a touring professional, mostly on the West Florida Golf Tour, where in 12 starts he recorded four top15 finishes.

Lynn University Director of Athletics Devin Crosby announced Jill Moore has been named interim head softball coach on Monday. Moore inherits a program that has won at least 20 games in four of the last five seasons. "I'm excited to follow the softball program's progress under Jill's leadership," said Crosby. "Lynn's pitching staff has continually improved each year under her stewardship while Jill has established sincere relationships with her student athletes. Her tireless recruiting, hard work and trust are all attributes of Spirt, Service and Strength."
Moore joined the Fighting Knights as an assistant in August of 2012 and helped guide the team to 20-win seasons in four of the last five years. Additionally, Lynn's team earned-run average in 2017 and 2018 both rank in the top-10 in program history and she has coached three All-Sunshine State Conference pitchers. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native takes over for Amy Bellisari, who moved on to become the assistant coach for the NCAA Division I University of Delaware Blue Hens.

For the past six years, Al Zucaro has been leading the fight against overdevelopment. www.zucaroformayor.com
Mizner 200 (Monarch) - a 1,000 linear foot development approved for Mizner Blvd. south of Palmetto Park Road
As Publisher of BocaWatch, Al Zucaro has led the fight against overdevelopment and its impact on our quality of life. Al’s opponent, Scott Singer, has voted for every single development project except one! Partial list of Singer YES votes: * Tower 155 Mizner 200 (Monarch) Fairway Commons Boca Colonnade 375 Royal Palm 6700 North Congress 900 Broken Sound
5201 Congress 5500 Broken Sound Via Mizner 475 Royal Palm Boca Highlands Spanish River Highlands 1 South Ocean
Many of these projects have yet to break ground. Despite the public outcry, Singer continues to approve one development project after the next, while taking campaign contributions from these same developers.
It’s time we elect a truly resident-friendly Mayor.
Vote for Al Zucaro on August 28. Tower 155 at Mizner Blvd. and 2nd Street currently under construction
*City of Boca Raton, Office of the City Clerk Political advertisement paid for and approved by Al Zucaro for Mayor of Boca Raton.
