Singer and Thomson Officially Sworn In By: Michael Demyan Mayor Scott Singer and newly elected city council member Andy Thomson were officially sworn in at the organizational meeting on Sept. 12. Singer, who has been serving as mayor since former Mayor Susan Haynie’s suspension, took the oath of office in front of Commissioner Steven Abrams. This came just one day after Haynie’s lawyer’s motion to dismiss her charges was denied by Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Glenn Kelley. “When I was sworn in [to city council] a few years ago, I spoke of great opportunities for our city and we have achieved a lot together and I’m really excited about what more we can accomplish,” Singer said.

By: Michael Demyan

Boca Raton Public Library is offering community members an exciting new opportunity to earn an accredited high school diploma and credentialed career certificate through Career Online High School, a program brought to public libraries by Gale, a Cengage company. Part of the world’s first accredited, private online school district, Career Online High School is specifically designed to reengage adults, ages 19 and older, into the education system and prepare them for entry into post-secondary career education or the workforce. “Earning a high school diploma is a life-changing achievement,” said Joleen Capella, Instructional Services Librarian. “By offering Career Online High School, we’re empowering our residents to seek new opportunities and transform their lives.” “We’re delighted to partner with Boca Raton Public Library to offer Career Online High School and give residents access to education and the potential to change their lives,” said Paul Gazzolo, senior vice president and general manager for Gale. Boca Raton Public Library will award scholarships for Career Online

High School to qualified learners seeking to earn a high school diploma and advance their careers. Singer, who has been serving as mayor since former Mayor Susan Haynie’s suspension, took the oath of office in front of Commissioner Steven Abrams. Thomson was sworn in by Pastor Tommy Kiedis of Spanish River Church. He narrowly defeated Kathy Cottrell for the seat vacated by Singer during his bid to hold onto the mayor’s seat. The race was so close that it required a recount to verify Thomson as the winner. “The election showed us that there are divisions in this city and I’m going to work with everybody up here, my new colleagues, to make sure that we try to bridge

those divisions, that we help preserve our quality of life here,” Thomson said. Both Singer and Thomson thanked everyone who were by their sides and supported them during their campaigns and were ready to get to work immediately after the short ceremony. “We’ve had successes in making it easier to do business in this city, but we still have a lot more to achieve,” Singer said. “I’m looking forward to continuing to build on those successes and creating a culture of innovation inside of city hall and outside of it.” Jeremy Rodgers, who was selected by the city council members to temporarily serve as the deputy mayor before the special election, will continue in that role after council member Andrea O’Rourke began the motion. It was seconded by Thomson. Thomson was then elected as the alternate for the Transportation Planning Agency. “I’m truly humbled to have the chance to work with my colleagues, our city staff and the people of Boca Raton, not just to find common ground, but higher ground,” Singer said.

Boca Raton, FL – South Floridians know quite well, the angst that goes with preparing as a hurricane approaches. So, a group of civic organizations and churches is hoping residents will take advantage of a free food giveaway this weekend. “It’s important that as we start thinking about our hurricane plan and first aid kit that we also have enough nonperishable food and water for ourselves, our families and our pets,” said Gessika Auguste, program coordinator of KOP Mentoring Network, one of the organizations organizing the event. “So, this is a great way for residents to stock up on food supplies.” The free giveaway, dubbed Food 4 Friends, will be at New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, 425 Roosevelt Ave., Delray Beach, FL 33444, beginning at 9 a.m. The parking lot will open at 8:30 a.m. The food will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis and no one will be turned away. A truck is expected to bring close to 100,000 pounds of food from area distributors to the event. Volunteers will place the food on tables near the truck and the residents will then be able to “shop”, choosing items that they need. “If you are coming, please bring your own bags or cart to carry the food,” said Wanda Gadson, of the South Palm Beach County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., one of the organizing organizations.

September 14 - September 20, 2018

Recipients of food will be asked to sign up to volunteer for three hours with three local nonprofit organizations. Saturday’s event is open to the public and is organized by KOP Mentoring Network in partnership with the Delray Beach Police Department, CRA Media Group, Praise and Worship City Church, Daughter of Zion Seventh Day Adventist Church, Heroines of Jericho, St. John Primitive Baptist Church, New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, Target, United Believers of Delray Beach, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Wayne Barton Study Center. KOP Mentoring Network is a character building, mentorship and gang prevention program designed to foster leadership, academic success and civicmindedness in youth ages 7 to 17. Since 1991, the organization has mentored more than 1,000 underserved youths in ways that lead to meaningful change in their lives. Auguste is asking everyone to share the news of the giveaway considering there is so much need in the community and everything on the truck must go. “On any given day, many of our kids and their families in this community do not know where their next meal will come from. So, this is our way of helping them meet those needs,” she said. For more information, call 561926-0076.

FAU Among Most Ethnically Diverse Universities

For the second year in a row, U.S. News and World Report has included Florida Atlantic University on the list of the most ethnically diverse universities in the United States. The publication notes that the institution’s “diversity index” score of .69 (out of 1.0) tied with six other institutions, including Harvard University and the University of Southern California. No other public university in Florida appeared on the list. According to U.S. News, Hispanic students make up FAU’s largest minority population, listed as 27 percent. The university received federal designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the United States Department of Education in 2017.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA AWARENESS SEMINAR

“We are very proud to have the most racially and culturally diverse student body in Florida’s State University System,” said FAU President John Kelly. “More than half of our students are members of minority groups or have come to us from abroad, creating a richly varied college community that offers great benefits to everyone.” FAU has a long history as an ethnically diverse university. Consistently, DIVERSE: Issues in Higher Education ranks the institution as a Top 100 provider of undergraduate and graduate degrees to minorities. Over the past several years, six-year graduation rates for black and Hispanic students have been higher than the overall graduation rates for the university.

Not Voting Does What? As the ballots were being tallied on election night, all indications were that Kathy Cottrell had won a seat on the Boca Raton City Council. But then the race got interesting, or rather ca used some nail-biting moments. There was a tie, and in the wee hours there was a big question mark. Challenger Andy Thomson had taken the lead by just 3 votes: 7,879 to 7,876. The dead-heat election results automatically triggered an official recount. After a machine and hand recount of the provisional and absentee ballots, Cottrell lost the race to Thomson by 34 votes. With low voter turnout — about 25 percent in Palm Beach County — the outcome of the District A race underscores the importance of every vote in close elections. Regardless of your political persuasion or interest in our community,

every vote matters and every vote counts. While a council seat’s race may be decided by a few votes, the difference in a national election is likely a margin of a few thousand, at least. I sent out a text to many of my local contacts the morning following election day, thanking them for voting. Among the responses was one, “You’re going to be mad at me but I did not vote.” She said that she did not vote because “They’re going to do what they want to do anyway. They never do what they promise during the campaigns and what difference will my vote make?” (For the record, I was not mad at her. I just added her to my DNA - Do not Answer - list in my phone). To dismiss this election cycle to be business as usual is a grave mistake as the status of our city and its future hinges on these five people we

chose to faithfully serve and discharge the duties of public office. The leaders you elect, make critical decisions that affect your life — the authority to encourage business growth, raise or lower taxes, shape neighborhood development, regulate garbage pickup, build more sidewalks and parks, among other things. In retrospect though, the importance of last week’s election should not be underestimated, as the position of mayor and a council seat will be under new leadership. Although Mayor-elect Scott Singer has been pinch hitting since former mayor Susan Haynie’s suspension, he will now be put to the real test. An attorney, Singer will need to skillfully lead the city through this legal quagmire after council members passed a de facto moratorium on development.

For those of us who consider high-density across the city as repugnant, there are those who are just as excited about the urbanism and perceived progress. As we analyze and debate the rate of growth or style of growth, we look to leadership to not only steer the discussion, but to also be cognizant of the taxpayers’ desires, concerns, and the qualityof-life expectations that are uniquely and inherently Boca Raton. No easy task, to be sure; but a challenge best met with high ethical standards and a strong moral compass. I echo Ms. Cottrell in saying that I pray that the entire elected body will work diligently, honestly and fervently to ensure that Boca Raton’s taxpayers voice, hopes and concerns are represented to the best of their ability.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Facing New Beginnings With Courage! Everyone should face any new beginning with zest and enthusiasm if good things are to emerge from that experience. It is always good to be forward-looking, but far better to be forward moving! Looking ahead offers invitations that need to be answered. The future is always calling us, humans, but only those who respond with decisive action shall benefit from the challenges being presented! A forward-looking attitude alone will never advance you beyond the status-quo. And that is not the posture anyone desires to observe,

for new opportunities are calling us, new challenges await everyone, everywhere! And challenges are not to be feared but simply to be confronted with courage and decisive action! New beginnings usually occur after something else has ended. An old year concludes, but a new one immediately arrives, leaving behind both the good and the bad which previously took place. Some things will be repeated, but new projects also await execution and fresh ventures to be launched. Life never stands still!

The same is true with the conclusion of one level of schooling. Instead of stopping there, why not consider higher levels which will increase your knowledge and skills, while providing better opportunities ahead? The difficulties to be faced are no reason to desist or be discouraged, for the wherewithal for their execution will always be available! Just like past events saw countless barriers and diverse problems, any new beginning will also have its share of unpleasant occurrences. Nevertheless, these don’t signify a

complete stop but only a momentary detour, or perhaps a meaningful change to ensure the full, legitimate success being sought! Always remember that no one can ever rush to success. If it is to come, it will always require diligent effort, often accompanied by sweat and tears. All difficulties encountered along the way towards the realization of any project do not signify that they are impossible; it probably only means that the effort will require extra time and labor!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Rosh Hashanah Dinner at Dr. Grabelsky’s home I spent the holiday at a beautiful dinner at the home of Dr. Stephen and Emily Grabelsky along with 20 of their family members and close friends. We enjoyed a fabulous buffet style dinner and meeting new interesting fiends. What a delightful couple the Grabelsky’s are. So happy to join them on the holiday’.

Ambition, Egos And Leadership These days we seem to assume that ambition, inflated egos and leadership go together like a yolk, egg white and shell go together to comprise a fresh egg. Leaders want desperately to advance their organizations and themselves, so strong, even overbearing egos appear necessary if their ambitions are to be realized. In fact, their boards and stakeholders often encourage a “whatever it takes” mindset for governing their leadership tactics. However, my friend Randy, a pastor, recently offered some thoughts that challenge such thinking. Why should business and professional people be concerned about what a clergyman says? Because, as he wrote, “We are like small business owners fighting to get the people’s attention through advertising. Part of attracting folks…is attracting them to ourselves. Our advertising, whether through constant participation in social media or hyping our stories, can easily blow up our egos, sense of competition, and conceit.” One particular danger, Randy pointed out, is the temptation to give preference to those in a position to help us to maximize goals and ambitions. “When we are loved by powerful, important, influential, well-known, or wealthy people, it is quite easy to make them a priority and steal time from the poor, the isolated, the insignificant, and the overlooked.” Without question, powerful, influential and affluent people – often customers or investors – are critical to the survival and growth of organizations. But if as followers of Jesus Christ one of our foremost goals is to serve Him and point others to Him, then we

must remember what He said: “… the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28). In a similar way, one of the best ways for representing Jesus is to serve others, especially those that cannot reciprocate. This may run counter to the philosophies and values of many in the marketplace, but the truths and principles presented by Jesus often ran counter to the cultures in which He and His followers lived as well. The apostle Paul, for example, wrote, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others as better than yourselves” (Philippians 2:3). In no way did he suggest there might be exceptions for those engaged in business or commerce. To be honest, the employers and bosses that impressed me the most over the course of my working career were those who seemed to regard me as more important than themselves, who made special efforts at times to seek me out, ask how I was doing, and even assist me in my job if the need and opportunity presented itself. I can assure you, knowing they genuinely had concern for my well-being inspired me to work even harder in trying to fulfill and exceed their expectations. As Paul wrote elsewhere, “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited” (Romans 12:16). This works for people regardless of their status or the work setting, whether in the marketplace, education, politics, media, or vocational ministry.

Boca Raton Regional Hospital PBSC Teacher Wins $15,000 Award Urgent Care Centers Receive for Artwork Major Accolade From The Urgent Care Association Of America

Boca Raton Regional Hospital (BRRH) Urgent Care Centers have received Certified Urgent Care (CUC) Category 1 designation by the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA). The designation, which is the UCAOA’s highest level of distinction, only includes urgent care centers that meet both certification criteria for scope of services and accreditation standards of quality and safety. The CUC Category 1 designation signifies BRRH’s Urgent Care Centers have met or exceeded strict guidelines set by the UCAOA in patient care processes, facility management, scope of care, record management, quality, technology and human resources. “We are proud to receive this designation as it objectively validates the high-quality of care we provide to our patients,” said Katie Acquino, DO, Medical Director of BRRH Urgent Care. In addition to the basic services offered at BRRH’s Urgent Care Centers, they also serve as an immediate gateway to tertiary care at BRRH should the patient’s condition require hospital-based services. The Hospital is

September 14 - September 20, 2018

recognized in such clinical specialties as Oncology, Cardiovascular Disease and Surgery, Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Orthopedics and the Neurosciences. “Our relationship with Boca Regional offers a distinct advantage to our patients,” continued Dr. Acquino. “We can arrange for very efficient follow-up care with our specialists.” Consumers recognize that urgent care centers are unique facilities that play an important role in the health care system. However, there is a wide variation in the operating model of America’s over 9,000 centers, making it difficult for consumers to identify which centers are best positioned to meet their urgent care needs. The UCAOA has established the CUC designation to identify urgent care facilities whose operating model is consistent with standard expectations for urgent care. Boca Raton Regional Hospital operates two urgent care centers – located at 3313 W. Hillsboro Blvd. Suite 100 in Deerfield Beach and 10 E. Palmetto Park Road in Boca Raton. Both centers are open from 8:00am – 8:00pm, Monday – Friday and 9:00am – 3:00pm, Saturday and Sunday.

Palm Beach State College Professor Samantha Salzinger has received a $15,000 award from the South Florida Cultural Consortium for her artwork, as well as an opportunity to showcase her winning pieces at an upcoming exhibit. She is among 12 visual and media artists —six individuals and a collaborative —selected this year for the award, described as one of the most lucrative presented by local arts agencies in the U.S. The South Florida Cultural Consortium presents the awards at either the $7,500 or $15,000 level each year through its Visual and Media Artists Program. The Consortium, an alliance of the arts councils of Broward, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties, opens the awards to artists who live in the counties they serve. “I am truly honored to receive this award,’’ said Salzinger, a now threetime winner who teaches art and serves as department chair at the Boca Raton campus. “The creation of art can be a very solitary practice, and, therefore, sending it out into the world to be witnessed is often a vulnerable act. Receiving this kind of confirmation after all the hard work is a happy surprise.” In addition to receiving the cash awards, the artists participate in an exhibition hosted and organized by a visual arts institution in one of the five counties. This year’s exhibit opens Sept. 15 in the Schmidt and Ritter Art Galleries at Florida Atlantic University. Titled “New Art: 2018 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship Visual and Media Artists Exhibition” it will run through Oct. 27. An opening reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 p.m. beginning in the Schmidt Center Gallery at the Boca Raton campus and moving to the Ritter Art Gallery until 8:30 p.m. The recipients were selected through a two-tier panel process that included the participation of regional and national arts experts. The regional panel selected the top picks based solely on the

www.bocaratontribune.com

evaluation of samples of the artists’ work submitted with their applications. The regional panel selections were then submitted to a national panel for a final decision. Salzinger was chosen for her body of work that consists of hand fabricated large-scale dioramas “that are carefully lit and photographed to create the illusion of a sublime landscape in a strange land.” To develop the pieces, she said she constructed tabletop models out of modest materials such as Styrofoam, plaster and dirt. Then she carefully placed her camera to manipulate the composition and mood of the resulting photograph. “Although inspired by nineteenth century romantic painters such as Turner and Friedrich, the tension in these images lies in the fact that they are photographs. Traditionally, a photograph evokes the tangible presence of reality. As the images begin to blur this line of distinction, they ask us to consider humans desire to control and predict nature. It is this dialectic of opposites that creates a tension in the photographs, resulting in mood akin to a nagging sense of uncertainty,’’ she said. Salzinger has a longstanding art career. Prior to coming to Palm Beach State, she was director of exhibitions for the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood in Florida. She also has served as an adjunct professor at Broward College and Florida International University. She has held many museum exhibitions throughout Florida. Her work also resides in many prominent permanent collections, including the recent acquisition in the Perez Art Museum in Miami. Broward New Times listed her in 2016 as one of “Ten Broward Visual Artist You Need To Know.” A Fort Lauderdale resident, she received a bachelor’s degree from FIU and a Master of Fine Arts from Yale University Graduate School of Art, where she was awarded the George Sakier Memorial Scholarship.

Chris Evert Charities is “So Very Happy” that Grammy award winning jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears (BS&T) will be the performers for the 29th Annual Chris Evert/Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Gala Dinner Dance on Saturday, November 10 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. It’s been five decades since drummer/producer Bobby Colomby and friends assembled the first group to successfully blend rock and jazz into a genre-crossing sound and style. So successfully in fact, that the band’s second album, Blood, Sweat & Tears, topped the Billboard charts for many weeks and beat out the Beatles’ Abbey Road for the prestigious Album of the Year Grammy award. That album produced three major hit singles: “You Made Me So Very Happy,” “Spinning Wheel,” and “And When I Die.” BS&T was the first All Star Band and has delivered since 1969 to today. The current line-up is sure to prove the critics right that BS&T is one of the greatest touring bands out there today. The elegant black-tie Gala Dinner Dance on November 10, which begins at 6:00 PM, includes cocktails, dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions. Tickets are $750 per person and can be purchased at www.chrisevert.org/tickets/. During the Chris Evert/ Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Classic four tennis pros will join the already announced participants including 7-time Grand Slam singles champion John McEnroe. McEnroe has won the US Open 8 times, Wimbledon 3 times and has won 77 ATP World Tour singles titles & 71 doubles. Between 1982-84 he was ranked No.1 and had a 39-match win streak. John McEnroe’s brother, Patrick McEnroe, will join him on the courts. Patrick, a former ATP pro, won the French Open doubles title in 1989, reaching an ATP World Tour doubles careerhigh of No. 3 in 1993 and playing on three US Davis Cup teams (’93, ’94, ’96). He currently serves as a tennis analyst, play-by-play caller and studio host for ESPN’s tennis telecasts. WTA doubles record-setter and four-time Olympian Rennae Stubbs returns to this year’s event and has been one of the most loyal supporters. Stubbs is a six-time Grand Slam winner (four

Football’s Robison and Smith Earn C-USA POTW

Florida Atlantic University football captured a 33-27 victory over Air Force last Saturday. The duo of Chris Robison and Rashad Smith led the Owl efforts and were named the Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on Monday. Robison led the Owls to victory over an Air Force team that came into the game with a 1-0 record on Saturday afternoon. And he did so after remaining focused during a 1:15 rain delay. Robison had a record-setting performance in just his second collegiate outing going 33-for-40 for a school record single-game completion percentage of 83. His 33 completions equated to a school-record 471 yards and three touchdowns, and his longest pass was a 49-yarder to Jovon Durante. Despite AF stacking the box, Robison was sacked just once during the game. His first two drives were a 13-play, 69-yard drive that ended in a field goal, and an 11-play, 47-yard drive that again ended in a field goal for a 6-0 led after the first. FAU's Robison-led offense improved that lead to 13-0 with 7:52 remaining in the half with a 5-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 36yard run by Devin Singletary, and would go into the locker room with a 13-7 lead. Robison would then lead the Owls into the end zone twice in the second half while also completing a 2-point play. The win marked the first time FAU had defeated an academy school in three attempts and

September 14 - September 20, 2018

extended the Owls' home win streak to eight. Robison also earned honorable mention CFPA National Performer of the Week honors for his efforts. Smith led the Owls a week ago versus Oklahoma in total tackles, and Head Coach Lane Kiffin praised the linebacker as potentially the lone bright spot of the game. One week later versus an Air Force triple option offense, which requires eye discipline, Smith came through once again with a career-high 16 tackles, including one tackle for a loss of two yards. While his relentless work equated to 18 percent of the team's total tackles, it was a critical late interception that sealed the game for the Owls. The Owls held a 33-20 lead when Air Force forced the Owls to attempt a punt. The Falcons blocked the punt attempt, recovered the ball and skated into the end zone untouched. Following the extra point, Air Force trailed by just six points and would succeed on an on-side kick. They took over on their 37 knowing a touchdown would tie the game and the extra point would give them the win. Two incompletions, two penalties and a five-yard run that gave AF a first down at the FAU 46 with less than 30 seconds to play, trailing by six. On the next play, Smith hauled in the team's first interception of the 2018 season to give the Owls the ball for the victory formation.

Robison, Martinez Named FAU Players of the Week

Florida Atlantic University has named Ivone Martinez (volleyball) and Chris Robison (football) student-athletes of the week. Robison had a record-setting performance in just his second collegiate game last Saturday against Air Force, leading the Owls to a 33-27 win. The redshirt-freshman quarterback was 33-for-40 on the day for a completion percentage of 83, compiling 471 yards - both set new school records. He was named Confer-

ence USA Offensive Player of the Week for his stellar play. Martinez claimed C-USA Setter of the Week honors in back-to-back weeks after lead the Owls to a sweep in the DePaul Invitational last weekend. The senior averaged 41.3 assists and 8.0 digs during the tournament. Robison and the football team will take on Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at FAU Stadium at 6 p.m. For tickets, call 1-866-FAU-OWLS.
