Florida Atlantic University will confer more than 2,600 degrees today and tomorrow during four commencement ceremonies in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

The new graduates will join more than 175,100 alumni who have graduated from FAU since the University opened its doors in 1964.

“Congratulations to the class of 2019,” said FAU President John Kelly. “It is a great pleasure to celebrate the accomplishments of our fall graduates. I know they will make FAU proud and I look forward to hearing about their future successes.”

Carly Asher Yoost, ‘09, founder and chief executive officer of Child Rescue Coalition, will be presented with the President’s Distinguished Service Medallion on Friday, Dec. 13 at 9 a.m. Child Rescue Coalition is a partnership of child exploitation investigators, police officers, digital forensic experts, prosecutors, child welfare agencies, and corporate and private philanthropy. Yoost won the L’Oreal Paris national competition and was named the 2016-2017 L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth National Honoree.

• The Boca Raton City Council has approved a long-term land lease with Brightline, soon to be Virgin Trains, for the construction of a train station and parking garage near the City’s Downtown Library.

By the end of 2020, Boca Raton is expected to be the third new station in the company’s south corridor, joining Aventura and PortMiami in connecting the privately-operated, intercity rail system. Current stations and stops include West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.

• This past Sunday, under the leadership of the Rotary Club Boca Raton West and their president, Douglas Heizer, all six Rotary Clubs of the Boca Raton area came together for the 13th Annual Boca Raton Toy Drive.

The event, which was first put together by Douglas Heizer and David Wilson in 2006 and since then Heizer grew the event from just one Rotary Club to include all local Rotary Clubs in Boca Raton to collect toys for the unprivileged children in our area.

Community City Council Approves Brightline/ 13th Annual Boca Raton Toy Drive Virgin Trains Station Agreement Continues to Deliver Holiday Cheer

The Boca Raton City Council has approved a long-term land lease with Brightline, soon to be Virgin Trains, for the construction of a train station and parking garage near the City’s Downtown Library. By the end of 2020, Boca Raton is expected to be the third new station in the company’s south corridor, joining Aventura and PortMiami in connecting the privatelyoperated, intercity rail system.

Current stations and stops include West Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.

According to Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer, the public private partnership with Brightline/Virgin Trains will bring to fruition long term policy goals that included a downtown parking garage, new transit options, and a downtown train station.

“We pursued an opportunity to be included in this major transportation network and have seized the moment,” said Singer. “Many community partners have discussed how this train station is a game changer and puts us on the map.

Once open, these vital transportation upgrades will provide benefits to Boca’s residents and businesses and will advance the long-term future of our thriving, progressive city.”

Brightline will begin building the train station, which it will fully fund and operate, on a 1.8-acre site near Palmetto Park Road and Dixie Highway before

2021, as a rail-ready connection to the $4 billion, 170-mile intercity train system.

The City will fund most of the of the design and construction of a 455-car parking garage for train guests and the public.

Brightline will be responsible for all the operating expenses of the garage and the parties will split the profits. Library visitors will have dedicated, covered, parking on the first floor, which will be complimentary.

“I want to thank Mayor Singer and the entire city council for getting this project done. As South Florida continues to grow, a Virgin Trains’ station in Boca Raton will add greater connectivity between our South Florida region while taking cars off the road,” said Patrick Goddard, President of Brightline/ Virgin Trains. “Expanding Virgin Trains in Boca Raton will serve as a catalyst for economic growth by creating jobs and bringing new visitors and spending to the area.”

Brightline is currently operating between Miami and West Palm Beach with nearly two million riders. Construction in underway to connect South Florida to Orlando in 2022.

“With trains already passing through Boca, our residents will now enjoy the benefit of a station that connects us to the region,” added Singer. “It’s a great win for our residents, commuting professionals, major employers, tourism, and our City’s presence.”

PBSC to Offer Business Certificate in Riviera Beach

Palm Beach State College will begin offering the courses for its Business Specialist College Credit Certificate at the Riviera Beach Public Works Center in January as part of a new initiative to enhance access to short-term educational training for the city’s residents.

Leaders from PBSC and the city recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding sealing the partnership.

Through the initiative, Riviera Beach residents can take the first two courses from 6:30 to 9:15 p.m. on Mondays (Introduction to Business) and Tuesdays (Microcomputer Applications) for the spring term. The remaining two courses for the 12-credit hour program will be offered in the summer and fall terms.

CareerSource Palm Beach County also is a partner in the initiative, which means that residents who qualify may be able to get a grant from the agency for training assistance.

“This is a project I have worked on ever since I joined the Council, and I am delighted that PBSC has been so cooperative in this first-time ever opportunity for Riviera Beach residents to receive higher education credits right here in our own community,’’ said Councilwoman Dr. Julia Botel. “It will make meaningful jobs and careers a reality for so many who need them. I am especially proud that the initiative came from Riviera Beach’s business community through our Workforce Development Task Force that identified what businesses needed in prospective employees.”

Dr. Tunjarnika Coleman-Ferrell, provost and dean of student services at the Palm Beach Gardens campus and a Riviera Beach native, assembled a team of staff and faculty to finalize the course offerings in the city. It was led by Associate

Dean of Academic Affairs Linda Lebile.

“Community partnership is key to bringing educational opportunities and advanced credentialing to constituents who have been marginalized. PBSC is an open access institution with five campuses, but we realize that some individuals in our community still face transportation issues and other barriers to education,’’ Coleman-Ferrell said. “The partnership will provide additional access for residents who need it. This is a momentous occasion because it marks the beginning of a relationship and collaboration, connecting the campus to the community and promoting higher education for all.”

Individuals interested in pursuing the Business Specialist College Credit Certificate are only required to have a high school diploma or GED. They will earn a credential that could help them land a new job or advance in their career.

Lebile said the program teaches key business concepts, but also could be just the beginning for residents who decide to pursue additional education at the College. “We’re hoping this will motivate the students to complete their education at Palm Beach State,’’ she said.

PBSC President Ava L. Parker, J.D., whose focuses include boosting community relations and engagement, applauded the team. “I’m pleased to lead an institution of passionate staff and faculty who have been keeping their finger on the pulse of our community to determine what more we can do to help people achieve an education.”

FAU Alumni Sued by Alma Mater

Lynn University placed among the nation’s most environmentally responsible colleges in The Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges: 2019 Edition.

The annual report profiled the top 413 institutions with commitments to green practices and programs. Schools were chosen based on a 2018–19 survey that analyzed academic offerings, campus policies and practices, and green-career preparation for students.

Lynn is dedicated to environmental responsibility and works closely with its students and employees to create a sustainable campus. Among various efforts, the university uses conscious building practices to reduce waste and save energy. The U.S. Green Building Council

(USGBC) has recognized Lynn’s work with several accolades: - Most Outstanding Residential Award, Mary and Harold Perper Residence Hall - LEED Silver certification, Mary and Harold Perper Residence Hall - LEED Platinum certification, Mohammed Indimi International Business Center

The Princeton Review selected Lynn based on its green rating—a measure of a school's performance as an environmentally aware institution. The complete methodology is available online.

Former FAU student, Neil Parsont, was sued due to the use of the FAU Owl in the advertisement of his tutoring site, but the problem doesn’t stop there.

He named his tutoring program Owl Tutoring, in order to confuse FAU students into thinking his private lessons are related to the university. According to the Palm Beach Post, while Parsont was still a student at FAU in 2013 getting a Masters’ in Business, he emailed fellow classmates that Owl Tutoring was a program run by FAU, lying that it was his own. Since he was still a student at FAU, the university was able to punish him, and Parsont’s was forced to put a disclaimer on his site that he is not affiliated with FAU and also stopped emailing fellow students.

According to the Palm Beach Post, three years later, in 2016, a father of an FAU student claimed his daughter

was molested by Parsont. The father then called FAU thinking that Parsont’s Owl Tutoring program was affiliated with FAU. FAU could not do anything to help the father and daughter because Parsont and his tutoring program were not affiliated with the university. So, it seems as though after graduating from FAU, he took the disclaimer down from his site.

This means that his university punishments of violating codes of conduct turned into legitimate lawsuits. Parsont’s has been battling with FAU for years now, from before even graduating to now.

The Owl Tutoring program ended in late 2018, but according to the Palm Beach Post, the website is still up.

Overall, Neil Parsont’s has been nuisance with FAU for years now, specifically since 2013. In the current lawsuit, FAU just wants Parsont to get rid of the owl logo on his site, even though it is not running anymore.

Children Who Live With Fear Will Not Feel Safe

“We live this every day. We go to schools and you hear that [some] kids have guns. They have Code Red lockdowns all the time. It makes it hard for you to focus and learn.”

I do not usually start my columns with a quote. But these were the words that rang in my ears after an angry disenfranchised young man mowed down 17 children and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland on Wednesday.

Like everyone else, I was outraged that we suffered yet another unnecessary and inexplicable mass shooting on U.S. soil.

But it pierced my heart even deeper when some students in my mentoring program shared their unfiltered concerns about gun control.

“When are the politicians going to do something to protect students, Mr. C. Ron?” one of my students asked me.

“What are we going to do now? You are going to see all the crazies coming out and being copy cats now,” another followed.

They were looking to me for answers.

Anyone who knows me, knows I am rarely at a loss for words. These questions, which we hear every time there is a mass shooting, stumped me though. After all, of all the senseless tragedies we have experienced in the past 20 years, school shootings are the most shocking and least explainable.

I am afraid that school shootings soon will become so commonplace that they will not be front page news anymore.

We are only 47 days into this year and already we have had 17 incidents where a gun was fired on school grounds.

We are taught and we teach our kids that schools are supposed to be a safe place and after all, Wednesday was Valentine’s Day, a day set aside to celebrate love. As I watched those terrified students screaming and rushing out of the building, some innocently must have grabbed their hearts - balloons and even roses - and carried it outside the door.

Symbolically, they did not want to leave their hearts in the school.

My student was right. She always thought schools were supposed to be safe havens. But as I reminded her, unfortunately, it appears the only time they are guaranteed safe zones is during natural disasters such as hurricanes and snow storms. Shootings such as Wednesday’s and Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, erased the notion of school as a cocoon.

All nine students who were with me said they felt the government failed them.

Based on our response after each shooting, how can I disagree with them?

However, despite one person’s attempt to wreak havoc, there were brave teachers and other school officials who paid the ultimate price to protect our kids.

I fear such carnage will continue until our leaders in Washington enact some common-sense gun control legislation instead of continue to loosen gun laws.

“Unless one of the NRA people’s or those politicians’ children or [loved ones] are victims of gun violence,

they are not going to do anything about gun control,” one student said.

Unfortunately, after each massacre, survivors and witnesses echo the same refrain: “Something must be done” still mass shootings have continued to plague the nation.

In fact, the number of shootings only have soared over the past few years.

I have no proof to say whether it would have prevented Wednesday’s massacre but less than a year ago, our legislators rolled back a law to keep guns out of the hands of some severely mentally ill people.

These days, as I listen to the news conferences, I keep hearing the new buzz phrase, “People who are mentally ill should not have guns.”

So now they are taking the onus off gun owners and laws that support gun control and putting it on mental illness.

The real truth is if anyone – whether a person in his or her sound mind or Nikolas Cruz - did not have access to the guns, those 17 innocent victims would still be here with us.

Are You A Tourist Or An Ambassador?

Most of us have enjoyed being tourists, visiting new cities, even another nations. I have not been as well-traveled as some people, but have appreciated opportunities to visit nearly a dozen other countries. Being a tourist can take us to places we might have only heard people talk about or have seen in photos.

I vividly remember my time in several Hungarian cities, for example.

My grandparents had immigrated from Hungary, so it was interesting to see “the old country” firsthand. I also enjoyed going to Germany, including the city of Giessen, my birthplace. Nobody there remembered me – not surprising, since I left for the U.S.A. when I was only a year old – but it was fun retracing my personal history a bit.

As tourists, visits are usually brief, and our commitment level is very low. We arrive to look around, maybe take

some photographs, sample local cuisine, and perhaps buy souvenirs. Then we return to our homes. Contrast that with the role of an ambassador, someone who takes up residence in a foreign land for a span of time, representing his or her own native country. They have specific roles and responsibilities, acting with the authority entrusted to them.

I mention this because 2 Corinthians 5:20 offers a challenging description of all who follow Jesus Christ, including the marketplace. It declares, “We are Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” To me, this says whether I am in a private office, conference room, making a sales call, finalizing a contract, or even traveling, my role is that of an ambassador for Jesus, representing Him to anyone I encounter.

Whether I am interacting with supervisors, coworkers, customers, or suppliers, I

am not only representing my organization but also Jesus Christ, as His ambassador.

Being an ambassador is a duty not to be taken lightly. Through our actions, as well as our words, we demonstrate for others what it means to be one of Jesus’ followers. It is a sobering responsibility, as 2 Timothy 4:5 states: “But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.” This is written to all who profess to be “born again” through Christ, as He said in John 3:3. It does not sound like instructions directed to mere “tourists.”

But in a practical sense, what does it mean to be “Christ’s ambassadors”? We find part of the answer in the second part of 2 Corinthians 5:20, which says, “We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.” If we are “satisfied customers,” persons who have expe-

rienced the peace, joy, forgiveness, grace, love and mercy of God through Christ, we have an obligation and responsibility to share what we have learned with others so they can experience that as well.

There is more. In another passage from the Bible, we read, “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9).

We work to earn a livelihood; utilize our skills, talents and gifts; and to experience vocational fulfillment. However, we are also called “God’s fellow workers,” given the privilege of co-laboring with Him in carrying out His plans and purposes in this world.

As Christ’s ambassadors, He desires to work through us to demonstrate what it means to live according to His principles and the biblical truths that guide us each day. This is no task for a tourist!

Understanding The Times

I attended the charity fundraiser and cocktail party at Jay Feder Jewelers honoring Boca Philanthropist, Arthur Adler along with my daughter, Melanie who was visiting from New York City.

While I was partnering with a friend, Jerry, on a consulting job, he shared a profound insight with Tom, who was one of our clients. Jerry’s observation was simple, but profound: “Success is the greatest impediment to greatness.”

Once success settles in, Jerry explained, it is not uncommon for leaders to believe achievements are due to their own professional brilliance. As a result they start to assume their success is perpetual. They think that whatever decisions they make will always prove to yield more success. As markets and conditions change, however, successful people can easily be left behind if they are not constantly looking to understand the times, recognizing when important changes occur and adapting accordingly.

Sometimes in today’s world, it seems the only thing that is unchanging is the reality that things can – and often do – change, sometimes at incredible speed. Embracing the status quo is an excellent strategy if you intend to be left behind while your competitors surge ahead.

Change, of course, is hardly a new concept, although technology and communications have certainly played a role in accelerating the rate and scope of change. The Bible offers some wise observations about change, and the importance of our willingness to respond to it effectively.

For instance, in the book of 1 Chronicles we find an interesting recounting of the great men who joined

David in his battle against Saul. We learn about the, “men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do”(1 Chronicles 12:32).

They were astute observers of what was occurring around them, seeking to discern how best to respond to changing circumstances.

The ancient book of wisdom, Ecclesiastes, also addresses the inevitability of change. The first verse of the third chapter begins with, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” It addresses changing demands of work in several ways:

“A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted…. A time to break down, and a time to build up….

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones…. A time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew…” (Ecclesiastes 3:2-7).

As we approach our work – formulating plans, developing strategies, undertaking projects, and evaluating results – it would be extremely beneficial to take a cue from the biblical men of Issachar, constantly seeking to understand the times so we will know what we should do not only to succeed, but also to pursue greatness.

At the same time, excellent leaders know that understanding the times and being willing to change their approach do not require changing or compromising their values. Those remain constant, serving as a lighthouse amid the ever-shifting seas of change.

As the speaker to the Class of 2019 DNP graduates last week, Mofmofortawonewah shared her coping strategy: “Grab it (the opportunity) and run with it.”Dr. Newah Mofmofortawonewah admitted being nervous at first. As a graduate of the School of Nursing’s Doctor of Nursing Practice Class of 2017, Mofmofortawonewah had joined a medical oncology practice with two physicians.

She was working out of four locations and doing rounds in several hospitals.

She told the class how their lives would change as they use their graduate degrees to transition from bedside nursing

Introduced by Interim Dean Dr. Phyllis King, Mofmofortawonewah’s remarks directly addressed the 23 graduates of the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) who received hoods that are part of the academic regalia they wear at Commencement.to making patient care decisions. The self-described “average girl” from the West Africa nation of Cameroon encouraged the graduates to keep up with their research as “nurse practitioners can change healthcare evaluation and influence patient care policy.”

Associate Professor and DNP/ NP Track Chair Dr. Jennifer Kuretski and other faculty presented hoods to Jacqueline Arrison, Mahdokht Arsshadi Haghighi, Johanna Belizaire, Frantz Brignol, Yuliet Corrales, Kelly Douglas, Katie DuBois, Angelica Everingham, Justin Forcier, Trenae Garibaldi, Ruth Haamankuli, Heidi Haase, Mary (Molly) Hunter, Alisabeth Kosek, Kara Krupa, Yvonne Mwaniki, Amy Myllynen, Anderson North, Samantha Pickrell, Christina

Smith, Nicole Starane, Aurora Jankowiask and Alexandria Watkins.

In addition, Smith was recognized with the DNP Excellence Award for the outstanding poster presentation of the summer while Hunter received the award for the fall semester.

At the same event, eight Bachelor of Science in nursing graduates received the school pin signifying the completion of their degrees and entry into the profession. Receiving their pins from Associate Professor and RN to BSN Track Chair Dr. Lynn Erickson were Veronica Cadavid, Keshea Davy, SoniaSha Desir Roseme, Annette Gordon, Megan Howes, Zedriane Mayfield, Dulce Ortega and Andre Thompson.

“You are adding three powerful letters after your name – B.S.N.,” Mofmofortawonewah said addressing those graduates. “They show how far you have come and how you have changed.”

“Be who God meant for you to be and let your light shine,” she said referring to the traditional lighting of the Florence Nightingale lamps, which takes place after the graduates received their nursing pins.

Jeanny Alexandre, PBA praise team coordinator, sang “Go Light Your World” and the opening and closing ceremony hymns.

President William M. B. Fleming, Jr. spoke from Galatians 5:22 in discussing how the graduates live out those values expressed in that scripture passage.

“May you continue to lead by example,” Fleming said. “Thank you for your gift of nursing care.”

FAU Celebrates Fall 2019 Commencement

Florida Atlantic University will confer more than 2,600 degrees today and tomorrow during four commencement ceremonies in the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The new graduates will join more than 175,100 alumni who have graduated from FAU since the University opened its doors in 1964.

“Congratulations to the class of 2019,” said FAU President John Kelly. “It is a great pleasure to celebrate the accomplishments of our fall graduates. I know they will make FAU proud and I look forward to hearing about their future successes.”

Carly Asher Yoost, ‘09, founder and chief executive officer of Child Rescue Coalition, will be presented with the President’s Distinguished Service Medallion on Friday, Dec. 13 at 9 a.m. Child Rescue Coalition is a partnership of child exploitation investigators, police officers, digital forensic experts, prosecutors, child welfare agencies, and corporate and private philanthropy.

Yoost won the L’Oreal Paris national competition and was named the 2016-2017 L’Oreal Paris Women of Worth National Honoree. In 2016, Carly received the U.S. President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her lifelong commitment to building a stronger nation through volunteer service.

In 2015, Carly was awarded the M&A Advisors 40 Under 40 Emerging Leaders Award.

Carlos Leon, 35, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. Leon successfully survived a tour of duty with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq only to suffer a traumatic accident that left him quadriplegic upon his return home. Following his accident, he won several medals during his time as a Paralympic athlete and after retiring decided to pursue his goal of receiving his college degree.

Jessica Baran, 18, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and behavior on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m. Baran is the first person in her family born in the United States, and she will be the first to receive her college degree.

She will be of one of the first students to graduate from the Max Planck Honors Program through the Max Planck Institute at FAU. Next on her list is to become the first person in her family to attend medical school and become a doctor.

Some interesting statistics regarding the summer graduating class include the fact that 79 of the degree recipients are over the age of 50 and 15 are over the age of 60. The oldest graduate is 71 and the youngest is 17. The graduates represent 39 countries.

Suzanne Olvey Returns to the Classroom to Finish What She Started

Suzanne Olvey started classes at Lynn University in 1997. Her family moved to Texas soon after, so she did not complete her degree. Twenty years later, she had two very important reasons to get back in the classroom.

"After having two daughters and no degree, I wanted to show them that you can finish what you start,” she said. "I didn’t want them to say, 'Well, you didn’t go to college, so why should I?'”

Olvey graduated with her bachelor’s in psychology on May 11, 2019, and she wasn't the only family member to

collect a diploma that day. Her husband Charles Olvey earned an MBA in marketing.

“If not for my wife, then I would not have walked across the stage.

She kept motivating me to finish," he said.

The pair studied at Lynn via online courses, while they juggled careers and their two young daughters. The whole family traveled to the commencement ceremony in South Florida to celebrate their achievements together.

Hooters Of Boca Raton Celebrates 10 Years

Hooters of Boca Raton held their 10-year anniversary celebration on Friday December 6. The festivities included a 2020 Hooters Calendar tour signing, live music, commemorative t-shirt and the “Decade of Gratitude” award presentation.

Hooters Girl Alumni from the past 10 years that worked at the Boca Raton location also attended the event.

In conjunction with the restaurants 10-year anniversary, Hooters of Boca Raton Managing Partner Chris Torelli presented awards to two members of the Boca Raton community. The team at Hooters of Boca Raton is proud to award both Troy McLellan and Brett Lea with the “Decade of Gratitude” award.

McLellan is the President and CEO of the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce. He has worked with the Hooters of Boca Raton on numerous events including the Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce Luncheon and Auction and frequently hosts networking events at the store. McLellan has been with the Boca Raton Chamber of Chamber for 21 years.

Only three days after FAU Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White announced that former head football coach Lane Kiffin had resigned to become the new head coach at the University of Mississippi, White was back on Wednesday to officially declare Willie Taggart as the Owls new head football coach.

Taggart, 43, was formerly the head coach of Western Kentucky University (WKU) from 2010 to 2012, the University of South Florida (USF) from 2013 to 2016, the University of Oregon in 2017 and most recently, Florida State University (FSU) from 2018 to 2019.

With FSU in 2018, Taggart had the 11th-ranked recruiting class in the nation and led the team’s offense to pass for 3,241 yards, which was the most by an offense under a first-year head coach in the university’s history.

As a Florida native, Taggart has been considered one of the best offensive minds in the country, according to FAU Sports. However, that was not the only reason why White wanted to hire

him.

“Coach Taggart is a proven program builder who will develop strong relationships with our studentathletes and develop them as future leaders,” White said.

“His deep relationships around the state of Florida and the nation will be vital in recruiting as well.”

When Taggart had his first meeting with the FAU football team Wednesday night, some traits he expressed to the players that he brings with him include longevity and player development within the program, as well as continuing the championship culture that Kiffin had started. With an overall head coaching record of 5662, Taggart hopes to regain a positive record that he believes will come with long-term success.

“I want to start off by letting you all know, straight up, I’m here for the long haul,” Taggart said, as he opened up the team meeting. “This is one of the top up and coming football programs in the country and the expectation to win a championship around here will continue.”

End of an Era: The impact Lane Kiffin had on FAU

With rumors of the Florida Atlantic University Owls head football coach, Lane Kiffin, pursuing another head coaching position prior to the team’s 49-6 Conference USA Championship victory over the University of AlabamaBirmingham Blazers on Saturday, Dec. 7, fans, students, and the rest of the Boca Raton community felt more appreciative of him than disappointed, despite the news.

As Kiffin officially resigned and accepted the head coach job at the University of Mississippi after winning his second C-USA title in his three seasons with the Owls, the FAU Athletics staff, including Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White, had nothing but gratitude for him.

“Coach Kiffin deserves our thanks and a great deal of credit for continuing to build our football program to high levels of success,” White said. “We have an extremely talented roster returning and I couldn’t be more excited about the future of our football program.”

Whether it was playing against highly ranked opponents across the country, such as the University of Wisconsin in 2017, Oklahoma University in 2018, and Ohio State University this season, or receiving visits from former NFL players and celebrities like Terrell Owens, Chad Johnson and Snoop Dogg, the impact Kiffin left at FAU was uncanny and put the university on the map at a national level.

When he was announced as FAU’s fifth head coach in program history on Dec. 13, 2016, the hype and publicity surrounding Kiffin was immediately there, as it was unheard of to have a

Nonetheless, with his catchphrase describing the atmosphere at FAU of “Football in Paradise,” the Owls that finished with a 3-9 record from 2014 to 2016 turned into the Owls that were conference champions in 2017 and had running back Devin Singletary drafted to the Buffalo Bills in the third round of the NFL Draft this past April. Although Kiffin’s success at FAU translated to the pros, that was the least of his concerns.

“I was used to all players thinking they were going to the NFL and your job is to get the players drafted the highest that you can,” Kiffin said, according to the New York Times. “[FAU] changed me to realize, I’ve got a bigger calling than that [and that] calling is to really help these kids develop.”

Kiffin, 44, finished with 2613 record over the past three seasons as FAU’s head coach. Even though a replacement for the position has yet to be found, White announced that first-year defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer will serve as interim head coach.

Now that the Owls will prepare for a bowl game, Kiffin reminds everyone that success is not achieved just from one person, but from others around that person, which he will try to repeat, as he begins to put together his coaching staff at Ole Miss.

“You don’t win two conference championships because you hire a head coach,” Kiffin said. “You have to have a lot of things in place and a lot of people helping, and that’s what happened [at FAU].”

Cusatis Earns All-American Honors From United Soccer Coaches

The awards for the Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer team continue to accumulate after its 153-3 season where the Sailfish reached the Sunshine State Conference title game and the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Individual accolades were once again earned by senior forward Cadu Cusatis, who was named a second-team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches last night. Cusatis becomes the 10th men's soccer Sailfish to be named an All-American since 2012.

Cusatis has been a mainstay in the starting lineup for the Sailfish over his two years at PBA starting in 34 of the 38 games where he has appeared. Last season, Cusatis scored six

goals and recorded six assists totaling 18 points. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native more than doubled last year's goal output this season by scoring 13 goals and recording a SSC high 28 points.

Cusatis had a stretch in the heart of conference play where he scored a total of ten goals in eight consecutive games and recorded a point in 11 straight games. In that stretch, the Sailfish defeated three nationally-ranked opponents and defeated the defending national champions. In addition to his All-American honors from the United Soccer Coaches, Cusatis was named SSC Player of the Year and South Region Player of the Year by the D2CCA.
