Community 10th Annual Carousel Toy Drive Brings Christmas Cheer To Boca Raton The 10th Annual Carousel Toy Drive took place on December 4th at Sugar Sand Park. Each year all the Rotary Clubs of Boca Raton join forces to host a toy drive to collect toys for the children of Boca Helping Hands and Wayne Barton Study Center. As the event has grown over the year, so has the community support. The Toy Drive started in 2006, with the idea of Douglas Heizer and David Wilson. They Rotary Clubs of Boca Raton helped build the Carousel at Sugar Sand Park. As a Thank-You, the park gave the Rotary Clubs one day to use the carousel however they wanted. As Rotarians tend to do, they found a need in the community and went to solve it. “It was a need I saw in our community that was being neglected and I knew we had to make a difference somehow. I never expected this Toy Drive to get so big but I am excited and happy to see the community joining together for such an important cause,” says co-founder Douglas Heizer. San Bernardo Ice Cream donated ice cream to the event, which was the first time the Toy Drive had such treats for the families. A family owned and operated ice

cream manufacturer known for unique flavors such as Cactus Pearfection and Biscotti, as well clever twists on old favorites such as Tiramisu and Mango, San Bernardo Ice Cream is offered on majority of cruise ships around the world - as it has for almost 20 years. Santa Claus’ tradition firetruck entrace was also changed for the 10th year with Fury Road Riding Club escorting the jolly old man on a motorcycle. Joining forces with them was great for both the Toy Drive and Fury Road. Dre Sloan, the CEO of Fury Road stated that “It was both a pleasure and a joy to be represented alongside [this] wonderful organization. It is clearly apparent that we both share a similar vision and set of values centered on investing in the community and impacting lives. “ The Toy Drive is more than just a one-day event. We start collecting toys about a month beforehand. Thanks to the help of our local business. We had a record of 14 different offices around the City that were collecting toys. In total, the Toy Drive was able to raise about 530 toys and around $500 in donations! This is wonderful for our community and next year the goal is to raise even more than ever before.

Boca Raton’s First Soccer Store Opens its Doors

By: Stephanie Fonseca Soccer has been growing sport in South Florida. However, anyone who plays soccer, knows that it isn’t the easiest task to find soccer gear in Boca Raton. That’s not the case anymore. Located in Fifth Avenue Shops on Federal and 20th Street, The Ultimate Soccer Store had their grand opening in March of this year, making it the first soccer store in Boca Raton. As you walk into the Ultimate Soccer Store, you come across a different kind of store. Instead of tile, you see synthetic grass and lines imitating that of a soccer field. The walls are covered of everything soccer, with cleats and sports gear lining the walls of the store. “We wanted to bring something different to the market,” said Owner Alessandra Nogueira. They wanted to bring a different concept, impacting customers as soon as they walked in the door, something that they have been successful in doing said Nogueira. The idea for The Ultimate Soccer Store came when Nogueira was looking for a new market to branch into. Because of the consistent growth in the sport along with the growth of Brazilians in the area, all studies Nogueira and her business partners made pointed to Boca. The Ultimate Soccer Store Supplies everything from cleats, to workout gear for women, training equipment and soccer uniform customizations. Nogueira also mentioned that if they don’t have

what you’re looking for, they’ll make it their mission to find and get it to the customer. Having made partnerships with soccer teams not only in Boca Raton, but throughout South Florida, Nogueira's hope is that these strategic partnerships will bring growth to the store. “Its been a steady growth these past 8 months, our hopes are to grow and multiply,” said Nogueira. Coaches who have partnerships with The Ultimate Soccer Store get discount on training equipment of 15% and their players get a 10% discount. Besides catering the store experience to each customer's needs, they also have a designated area where they hold FIFA tournaments four times a year. The designated area can also be used as a meeting room open which is open for coaches who want to look over film with their player, free of charge. The Ultimate Soccer Store has been in the city of Boca Raton for less than a year, but they have already embeded themselves in the fabric of the city. The store sponsors Boca Raton Football Club, the semi-pro Soccer team from Boca Raton that plays in the National Premier Soccer League, as well as Boca Predators, a local soccer recreational league. Whatever the case may be The Ultimate Soccer Store looks to help the expansion of the sport they are so passionate about in South Florida. “We live and breathe soccer, and with our passion for the store we want to open the doors to this sport here,” said Alessandra Nogueira.

Making a Difference Every Day in our Community Though it began only a year ago, one local organization is quickly becoming a force that is giving a hand to our most dedicated and talented students to help reach their potential. The Eda and Cliff Viner Community Scholars Foundation, which began in May 2015, is making a silent but impactful commitment to provide scholarships to area high school seniors. In the first year, the Boca Raton-based foundation awarded 18 scholarships. And not only do they pay for the students’ tuition, they also provide mentors to work with each student through the four years of college. This year, they stepped up their game by being a major sponsor of the Urban League of Palm Beach County’s Youth Empowerment Luncheon recently. How ironic that the Viner Foundation’s mission mirrors that of the Urban League’s nationally award winning youth organization – NULITES: providing high school students

with a four year college education. To date, they already have 46 Viner Scholars attending Florida public universities and officials project they will have 100 enrolled in college by 2018. I saw so much energy and youthful exuberance at that luncheon, just like all around us, so many young people are becoming active agents of change. Another local group that deserves major kudos is Mary Wong and her team from the Office Depot Foundation, which again donated thousands of dollars in cash and supplies to local non-profit organizations last week. Each year, the foundation receives sample items from its stores and sells them to employees at a very nominal price. They then use the proceeds to buy backpacks and sackpacks, which are then given to more than 90,000 middle school students around the country. Foundation officials encourage these kids to dream about the future, explore

career possibilities and stay in school. Since 2001, the foundation has donated 3.3 million backpacks and sackpacks to deserving children. Volunteers from non-profit organizations helped over two weeks with unloading pallets, setting up merchandise, pricing items, cashiering and clean-up. In exchange, they received cash donations, which for many of the smaller organizations with very small budgets, is valuable. At the end of the sale, the organizations were invited to take whatever items were left. This year, several teachers from Village Academy had an early Christmas treat as they left with boxes of pens, paper, scissors and much more supplies they either could not afford or would struggle to buy on their already slim salaries. It was a sight to see the smiles on their faces as they loaded the boxes in their vans. I am hopeful the free supplies

will help make a difference in the lives of those who are building our future community leaders. Happy belated birthday is in order for Estella Mims Pyfrom, the retired educator who celebrated her 80th birthday recently. Ms. Pyfrom retired after 50 years with the Palm Beach County schools, used her retirement money to buy a bus, retrofit it with 17 computers and has been driving to schools and community centers in hopes of closing the digital divide for kids at or below poverty level. I do have hope. Despite the challenges of unemployment, crime and education, our future as a community looks bright. There is still much work to be done, however, especially in the areas of discrimination, equality and gender-based violence. But with people like Eda and Cliff Viner, Mary Wong and Estella Pyfrom we have a lot for which to be thankful.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Leaders Depend on Followers! There are persons who wish to be recognized as leaders on account of a position they occupy. Yet, if no one is following them, the title cannot rightfully be applied to them, and it makes very little difference, if any. The very idea of leadership entails followers, to justify the use and application of the term “leader.” Interestingly, before anyone can be a leader, he or she must first be a follower also, observing certain guidelines which, then, can be passed on to others who are now following such person. And once someone begins to act as a leader, such person must continue to seek new guidelines and abide by them in the tasks they are to fulfill and the example they must set before those

depending on their leadership. Leadership entails ever learning new paths to take the followers along, with fresh, relevant ideas to inspire and further prepare every current or potential follower. It also signifies being able to revise personal habits and patterns so as to help advance the followers to where they need to go and to what they must experience for the success desired and anticipated! A leader often fulfills some of the same tasks the followers are performing; a genuine leader is not just a distant boss but an involved colaborator. A true leader should never depend solely on one’s own insights. They may be good, but can also be improved. They may be outdated and require the necessary revi-

sions which others can inform and even help implement. Or they can also be quite bad, and should be prevented from further implementation! Followers will always need to know where they are going in following their leader, since personal capacities vary, individual limitations are a major factor when it comes to certain aspects of a task which, otherwise, can be achieved with brilliance and legitimate good results. Leaders, sincerely and proactively, have to consider the best interests of their followers by being clear communicators of their vision and expectations, kind in the face of errors committed, approachable at all times, and never impossible to be reached for any

emergency. As I once read, “if you want to be the top banana, you should not detach yourself from the bunch.” Several institutions have persons who have become leaders by default and who, in so many cases, are incapable of doing the job, in the manner the work needs to be conducted. Unless lines of communication between leaders and followers are perennially open both ways, little progress can be made. Leaders and followers have to study their roles continuously so as to improve them always, as they move forward, whatever the cause or project may be!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Boca Police remind citizens to watch belongings this holiday season

Boca Raton police are investigating a purse snatching that occurred on Thursday, December 8, 2016 around 5:00pm. The victim was meeting a friend at the Hallmark store, located at 1357 W Palmetto Park Rd to give him some money she owed him. After meeting her friend, the victim returned to her car to get items she needed to return to Publix. When walking back to her car, she noticed an older model gold Infinity in the spot next to her car. The driver of that car asked the victim a question. As she approached the suspect car, he reached out and grabbed her pink wallet. As the two struggled the suspect backed out of the parking space and drove

east. A Publix employee heard the victim screaming and came to her assistance and called police. The victim described the suspect as a white male, with a crew cut and blue eyes. If anyone has information about his case, please contact Detective Tim Kurdys at 561-338-1377 or Crime Stoppers at 800-458-TIPS. You can also text a tip anonymously. In the body of the text, type "BRPD” plus your message and send it to 274637 (CRIMES). Remember, always remain alert. Don’t let your phone distract you and park in well-lit areas. Do not approach suspicious people and report all suspicious activity.

Uber driver reports failed robbery attempt and shot fired On Friday, December 9 at just after 2:10 a.m., Boca Raton Police Officers met with the victim of an attempted robbery. The victim, Jeffrey Brown, told officers he parked in the lot at 6070 North Federal Highway, waiting for a call for service. Brown said he saw a faded red mid-sized SUV enter the parking lot and park on the side of his car. Three males got out of the SUV and two approached his driver's side window, pointing guns at him. Brown said they demanded he get out of the car and when he did not respond, the

suspect driver got out of the SUV, too. The closest suspect pointed the gun directly at Brown, near his window. Brown rolled up the window and started to drive away when he heard one gun shot. A bullet entered Brown’s car and traveled through his hat, but Brown was not injured. Brown described all four suspects as black males, all in their late teens to late 20's. The driver was average height with short, braided hair and gold teeth. Two suspects were described as about 6' tall and stockier, wearing all black clothing.

By Dr. Arnold Needleman When it comes to heart disease the most effective treatment is preventing it in the first place. Most of us are familiar with the main risk factors of smoking, high blood pressure, a diet rich in cholesterol and saturated fats, obesity and inactivity. However, despite our best efforts in reducing these risk factors heart disease still occurs. So how does a person know if they have heart disease? The most common manifestation of heart disease is angina, which is generally described as a crushing, squeezing, pressure-like (“someone sitting on my chest”) deep chest pain. The cause is reduced blood flow through the coronary arteries, which supply oxygen to heart muscle. The pain may radiate into the arm, neck, jaw or back and give a sense of uneasiness. Sometimes the only symptom may be nausea, sweating, stomach pain (“indigestion”) or shortness of breath. Often the symptoms are brought on by emotional distress or physical activity. Of note, certain groups of people may not have the “classic” presentation of chest discomfort. Diabetics may have alterations in nerve function that can blunt the feeling of chest pain. Women and elderly patients also may present with atypical forms of chest discomfort. Many times heart disease can be silent and people may develop signs and symptoms related to a damaged heart such as shortness of breath or coughing while lying down and swelling of the legs as seen in congestive heart failure or palpitations, dizziness or passing out related to cardiac arrhythmias and valvular heart disease.

For more info visit us on the web at —

An important group not to be overlooked is people with peripheral vascular disease, usually manifested as pain or weakness in the legs with walking, who may have heart disease that is asymptomatic. One last point is that sometimes coronary artery disease can be discovered at a very early stage by utilizing a CT scan to measure a coronary calcium score. Calcium is an indication of plaque buildup in the arteries. People often ask, “How does a person know if they’re having a heart attack?” The symptoms we discussed for angina are the same as in a heart attack only with angina they are short-lived and relieved by rest within a few minutes. With heart attacks they last much longer. The elderly are more likely to experience a general malaise, fatigue or confusion as the presenting symptoms of a heart attack. The bottom line is only your physician can determine what is right for you, and don’t delay if you’re experiencing any of the aforementioned signs or symptoms. Local Residents Donate $1.5 Million to Support College Students The significant generosity of two dedicated University of Delaware donors will contribute to the legacy of successful finance, business and economic education for students in the Lerner College of Business and Economics. Alumnus and Board of Trustees member Michael S. Geltzeiler and his wife, Rosann F. Geltzeiler, recently made a $1.5 million commitment to establish the Michael S. ’80 and Rosann F. Geltzeiler Trading Center Support Fund. In recognition of the Geltzeilers’ commitment, the trading center, located in Purnell Hall, will be renamed the Michael and Rosann Geltzeiler Trading Center this spring. “It is inspirational and an honor when alumni give back to the University in such a poignant way,” said Bruce Weber, Dean of the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics. “We are all so grateful for the support the Geltzeilers have provided the Lerner College over the years and could not be more appreciative of their latest gift to the Trading Center. Not only will it ensure our students graduate with truly relevant exposure to the industry, but it will strengthen the reputation of our College tremendously.” The Michael S. ’80 and Rosann F. Geltzeiler Trading Center Support Fund will be used to provide unrestricted endowment support for the 2,200-square-foot discovery-based learning facility. Through this visible investment, the Lerner College will continue to provide its undergraduate and graduate students with business exposure and a lasting professional edge in the financial industry. “As an alumnus, I’ve always held the Lerner College near and dear to my heart,” said Michael. “Given my former role at the New

York Stock Exchange, I’ve seen what it takes to be prepared for the rigors of a career in financial services – and we wanted to provide resources to enhance the handson learning experiences necessary for UD students to succeed. Rosann and I could not think of a better way to do this than to support the programs that take place in the Trading Center.” The Geltzeilers’ commitment will strengthen the Center’s mission to offer students access to real-time, practical professional industry applications. Faculty will benefit from high-tech teaching tools that expose students to sophisticated financial software that may be applied to live, professional applications across the financial markets. The Michael and Rosann Geltzeiler Trading Center will ultimately support thousands of students who benefit from the classes, workshops and advanced training in trading technology that take place each semester in the Center. President Dennis Assanis expressed his appreciation for the recent commitment made by the Geltzeilers, saying, “I am truly grateful for the commitment that Michael and Rosann have demonstrated with this gift. Their significant support of the University and the Lerner College will not only reinforce experiential learning opportunities for our students, but will elevate the University’s offerings to future Blue Hens who will continue to make great impact on the financial industry,” he said. “I am hopeful the Geltzeilers’ gift will inspire others to advance UD in a similar manner.” An official ribbon cutting ceremony for the Geltzeilers, faculty, staff and students will be held in Spring 2017.

Rob Donohoe as Truman Capote in Palm Beach Dramaworks’ Tru / Photos by Samantha Mighdoll

By Nicholas Palmieri Palm Beach Dramaworks proves with its new production of the one-man semi-biographical play “Tru” by Jay Presson Allen that the number of actors in a show has no bearing on the company’s full-scale commitment to quality. “Tru” stars Rob Donohoe as writer Truman Capote, who examines his life in the aftermath of publishing chapters from a novel which, while under the guise of fiction, was actually about the people in his social circles. The script is firmly planted in its 1975 setting, with Capote dropping famous names at every opportunity. Viewers more familiar with the time period will get a kick out of the pop culture references and feel as if they are back in that time. But even for this young reviewer, Donohoe’s lively delivery of each name gave all the information I needed to understand each one’s significance. With Capote as the sole character in the two-hour play, one might think the performance would get old before the ending. However, the structure of the play, combined with Donohoe’s commitment to the character’s journey, makes sure this does not happen. The play starts with Capote talking on the phone and going call to call, at one point answering a door and briefly

interacting with someone off-screen. This all gives off the feeling of a full cast while using only one actor. As the play continues on and Capote hangs up his phone, his actions and the words he says to himself continue to entertain as if the audience is looking in on someone home alone. Eventually, the audience begins to feel as if they are being addressed directly in a conversation with an old friend, leading up to when Capote explicitly acknowledges the audience. The play continues to its conclusion from there as Capote covers progressively deeper and more intimate topics. The way this gradual connection builds between Capote and the audience keeps viewers interested and engrossed in the play in a way other oneman shows do not. All of this would be for naught without Donohoe’s superb characterization, under the direction of Lynnette Barkley. From his quirky high-pitched voice to his vibrant movements, it was clear Donohoe had done his research and added his own flair while remaining true to the real person. His commitment to the narrative arc drives the play, as his Capote’s air of flippant self-importance slowly gives way to deep insecurities about his socialite lifestyle and life itself. My favorite touch was in the three times the character danced: cheerfully at the beginning of the play, anxiously in the middle, and despairingly at the end. All were unmistakably Capote, but each also reflected the point where the character was in his journey. The production’s technical details remained as meticulous as any other Palm Beach Dramaworks show. Capote’s costumes reflect his offbeat, flamboyant personality while remaining period-accurate, and the set of a New York apartment appears ornately decorated, as befits the character. The lighting and sound design work to further bring the audience into the conversation with Capote, at points, subtly highlighting the audience itself as he speaks to them. Everything remains as top-notch with this solo show as it was with Dramaworks’ 14-character production that opened the season. This production of “Tru” comes highly recommended for Capote fans and for those who want to see the storytelling heights that can be achieved with only one actor. “Tru” runs through January 1. Tickets are $66 and can be purchased via phone at (561) 514-4042 or online at palmbeachdramaworks.org.

Will Smith Gets Serious in “Collateral Beauty”

Charlotte’s Travels

Photos by Charlotte Beasley

My travels took me to Jafco’s Children’s Village in Sunrise, Fl. where I delivered several bags of toys to needy children and a wicker baby carrier. Jafco helps abused and abandoned children and does an amazing job of caring for the children. Our Black Hat Diva’s also donated a paver in the walkway to the Village office in memory of our dear diva, Flossy Keesley

How much do you like Will Smith? Do you like him enough to see him portray a severely depressed man with no super powers or martial arts skills? Such is the case with Howard, a successful New York advertising executive Smith plays who has retreated from life after the death of his 6-year-old daughter and his subsequent divorce. “Collateral Beauty” is not a feel-good movie. It is more like a feelbummed movie. Will Smith plays Howard, a successful New York advertising executive whose agency is in grave peril due to his disconnection. Things have gotten so bad; three of Howard’s friends are hired to represent the three things Howard is obsessed with: Love, Time and Death. They are an impres-

sive lot: Helen Mirren, Keira Knightly and Michael Pena. Edward Norton gets the most screen time as Whit, second in command to Will Smith’s Howard. Whit and his colleague Claire (Kate Winslet) come up with the scheme to jolt Howard out of his depression. I know about depression from personal experience. There is nothing funny or logical about it. It can be crippling and even deadly. How director David Frankel or writer Allan Loeb thought they could make a comedy out of it mystifies me. At least this movie lifts up the rug to reveal the people struggling with this disability. That’s good, but it ain’t funny folks. Two stars

Charlotte Beasley, Exec. Director of Jafco, Sarah Franco and Helene Weicholz On Friday I traveled up to the Eau Hotel in Manalapan for my black hat diva’s holiday party. Eighteen Diva’s enjoyed a lunch consisting of caesar salad, shrimp scampi or steak and choice of tiramisu or creme brulee with unlimited champagne. Ballroom dancers, Sandi Solomon and Tony Lewis entertained the group with a variety of different ballroom dances and a Ms. Elegant Diva contest was held and the winner for Ms. Black Hat Diva, 2017 was Louise Cammerota. A very fun good time was had by all.

Life can be compared to a football or basketball game, or perhaps the final minutes of a soccer match. At some point you reach the fourth quarter. You feel tired, maybe hurting a little, but there is still time on the clock. There are still plays to be made. Chances are, they are the most important plays of the game. This is where you win or lose the contest. Unlike football, in real life we cannot see the clock. We do not know how much time we have left. We are also not certain about the score. Are we winning or losing? All we really know is that the game is not over. Our friends are still watching and cheering, and we need to finish strong. Colonel Harlan Sanders realized that he couldn’t live off of his Social Security benefits, so he started Kentucky Fried Chicken (now known as KFC) when he was 68. Arnold Palmer was still designing golf courses when he died earlier this year at 87, and Jane Pauley was recently named host of CBS’s Sunday Morning news program. She is 65. We could cite hundreds of other stellar examples of people who achieved much of their finest work in the latter stage of their lives. So the fourth quarter is important – even if we never will be famous. For me, the fourth quarter is proving to be a good time for writing, teaching and passing along what I have learned to others. Several months ago I realized I had 30 teaching or speaking dates on my calendar to be fulfilled before the end of the year. Some were tax classes, some were leading a group on personal finances, and a few were focused on the crafts of writing or photography. I needed to practice my public speak-

ing skills, since I was going to be putting them into use over the succeeding few months. When we are young, it seems we have forever in front of us, so we have little concern about the final stages of our lives. However, we reach our 50s or 60s, we start to realize the time for making our mark, a meaningful contribution in life, is growing shorter. So it is wise to regard these latter years in terms of stewardship, even a sacred trust. The Bible has much to say about this: Time is fleeting. Time passes by relentlessly. We cannot stop it, nor can we conserve it or store it up for later use. It can be tragic to look back on our lives and think of time we failed to use wisely. If we do not use time, we lose it. “Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16) Take advantage of opportunities while you can. In our “fourth quarter,” we have accumulated a lifetime of experience and expertise. When opportunities present themselves to utilize those abilities, we should do so with eagerness. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). We are being watched. How we live our life is serves as an example for others. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews 12:1).

Feen on the Scene By Diane Feen

Highwaymen Art Comes To FAU With History And Heritage Though South Florida was not known as a Mecca for artwork or artists in the 50’s and 60’s, there was a prolific group of artists creating pastoral paintings of Florida in its natural state. Known as the Highwaymen, these artists were African Americans who escaped poverty (and the drudgery of laboring in the citrus groves) by painting what they knew best – The Florida landscape. When they first started painting, the 25 men (and one woman) sold their paintings on the side of the road for as little as $10. But things are different today - Highwaymen art is in big demand and the art form - and the artists are part hero and part Florida folklore. That’s why FAU recently held a regal reception and gallery talk at the Ritter Art Gallery. It was so calm, cool and collected it had a Hampton’s vibe to it. Highwaymen artist James Gibson was there as well as Highwaymen artist Alfred Hair’s widow (and painter) Doretha Hair Truesdell. After a balmy evening outdoor reception – that heralded finger food and wine – the group went inside the gallery to view the art and hear about its historical reference. “Life in Florida is like a film being projected at double speed. You have to stretch your memory to see the change. But the nostalgia serves a good purpose, it gives you a moment to readjust your emotion,” said humanities scholar Dr. Evan Bennett. Bennett said we play the “Do you remember Game” in South Florida because it allows us to make sense of the tremendous change in our midst. Though he did say that it is a jarring change (no kidding – the parking alone), he also said viewing these paintings of mid-century Florida landscapes connects us to a time of purity and simplicity. For those of us who lived in Boca Raton when FAU consisted of a few tennis courts, baron land and effortless parking, the event was reminiscent of that time as well. The paintings were depictions of what Florida is known for – moonlit nights, swaying palm trees, lustful sunsets and somber rain clouds – and the crowd seemed more cerebral than those at the Blue Martini. Highwayman artist James Gibson meandered around unnoticed and Doretha Hair Truesdell was there as well. Hair Truesdell talks about how the artists made frames from discarded door and window moldings and how they painted on upson board of recycled wood because it was cheaper than canvas. The exhibition - called “A.E. Backus and Florida’s Highwaymen: History, Commerce and Art” – was also dedicated to artist Backus, who was a palette pleaser of South Florida’s natural beauty. Backus was also a mentor and art teacher for many Highwaymen artists. We were reminded that the 50’s and 60’s was a time of racial inequality for black people in South Florida. Yet being an artist in those days was an escape from the

December 16 - December 22, 2016

www.bocaratontribune.com

drudgery that often plagued black people in the early days of the South. Perhaps that’s why the paintings of these brave men (and women) were full of color and illumination – artistic reality and ethereal emotion. The paintings sold well on the road – albeit for about $25 – but are now coveted as a static piece of Florida history worth much more. If you missed the opening, don’t despair, it goes until Nov. 19 at the Ritter Art Gallery on the FAU Boca campus. There will also be a host of panel discussions about the Highwaymen art and artists until November. Call 561- 297-2661 or check out www.fau.edu/galleries Pieces of upson board paneling of recycled wood were recycled again as Hair's canvas, said Doretha Hair Truesdell, his widow. And pieces of interior door and window molding were cut for frames. Doretha Hair shellacked the boards and painted the backgrounds for what would become Hair's now famous and collectible Florida landscapes. "We weren't doing 5x7's and standard sizes the way we have now," Hair Truesdell said. The building material scraps dictated the size of the finished art. The couple went on the road to sell the art to homeowners and business owners up and down the east coast of Florida, Hair Truesdell said. To create more art and more sales, Alfred Hair drove posts made from leftover construction lumber into the yard behind the house to make a sort of assembly line, Hair Truesdell said. Hair nailed the upson board to the makeshift posts and Doretha did the skin coats while her husband at the time painted in the details. "But when it was raining, you couldn't paint outside," said Hair Truesdell. "So we enclosed the porch and created a studio." Instead of easels, Hair built a structure hanging from the ceiling to act as an easel and keep 20 paintings in production at one time. "We made a good living," Hair Truesdell said. "In the tomato fields you could work from sun up to sun down and not make $6; and it was backbreaking work bent over all day," she said. "We were selling paintings for up to $25 each; some less, some more." Painting sales built the couple a new home and made it entertainment central for an ever-expanding group of friends who knew Alfred Hair had filled the refrigerators with cold beer and cooked vats of food while wife Doretha prepared the canvases for his brush. Among friends who gathered were Hair's Lincoln Park High School friend James Gibson who also took up the brush to paint and sell Florida landscapes growing in favor with Florida newcomers and visitors. The group of painters grew substantially in only a few years.

sports Lane Kiffin Named FAU Head Football Coach

Florida Atlantic University has named Lane Kiffin head football coach. Kiffin comes to FAU with extensive college and professional coaching experience and will accelerate development of the university’s ambitions to transform college football in South Florida while continuing the Owls’ football team’s success in the classroom. FAU President John Kelly said Kiffin has coached at the highest level and brings to Boca Raton a winning mentality. “Lane will change the face of college football here,” Kelly said. “Our players will respond to him, our recruitment drives will respond to him, and our fans will respond to him. FAU Stadium will be the home of college football in south Florida.” Kiffin joins the FAU Owls after three seasons at the University of Alabama, where he served as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He was a finalist for the Frank Broyles Award in 2014, which is given to the country’s best assistant coach. In 2015, Kiffin oversaw development of quarterback Jake Coker, who finished his career 14-0 as a starter at Alabama

and led the nation in completion percentage over the final 10 games of the season at 72.2 percent. Coker threw for 3,110 yards with 21 touchdowns, which ranks as the second-most passing yards in Alabama school history. On the ground, Kiffin fed Heisman Trophy running back Derrick Henry the ball a school- and SEC-record 395 times for a record 2,219 yards and 23 touchdowns. Henry’s 2,219 yards was also the fifth-most rushing yards in a single season in college football history. One of Kiffin’s first responsibilities at Alabama was identifying a starting quarterback and then developing Blake Sims in 2014. With three-year starter and All-American AJ McCarron off to the NFL, Kiffin oversaw Sims’ rise to the top of the Alabama depth chart en route to a school-record 3,487 passing yards and 3,837 yards of total offense while completing 64.5 percent of his passes. He ranked tied for fourth nationally in total QBR (83.7) and seventh in passing efficiency (157.9). Sims was selected second-team All-SEC, named to the Senior Bowl, tabbed as a finalist for the Manning Award and a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award.

Kiffin’s offense ranked 17th nationally in total offense per game (484.5) while scoring an average of 36.9 points per game. The passing game averaged a schoolrecord 277.9 yards per game (3,890) to rank 28th nationally and fourth in the SEC. Amari Cooper won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best receiver, after catching a school- and SEC-record 124 passes for a UA-record 1,727 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He spent the previous three-plus seasons as the head coach at Southern California, where he compiled a record of 28-15. Kiffin’s 2012 USC squad went 7-6 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-12 South, good for second place. Wide receiver Marquise Lee was a unanimous first-team AllAmerican and won the Biletnikoff Award while also being named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year. Quarterback Matt Barkley, who won the Wuerffel Trophy, set conference records for passing yards and passing touchdowns. Kiffin led the Trojans to a 10-2 record in 2011 and a sixth-place finish in the final Associated Press poll. The team finished first in the Pac-12 South with a 7-2 mark. His 2011 USC offense produced a 3,500-yard passer, a pair of 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yard rusher. Three Trojans earned first team All-America honors (Matt Kalil, Robert Woods and T.J. McDonald) and five were named Freshman All-Americans. In his first year as the head coach at USC, Kiffin led the Trojans to an 8-5 record (5-4 Pac-10). Before his arrival, the Trojans were averaging 26.5 points per game in scoring offense and 389.1 yards per game in total offense. In his first two seasons, those numbers increased to 31.0 points per game and 431.5 yards in 2011 and 35.8 points and 456.8 yards in 2012. Prior to his tenure at Southern California, Kiffin served as the head coach at Tennessee in 2009. He led the Volunteers to a second-place finish in the SEC East and an appearance in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Volunteers’ offense jumped at least 34 places in every national statistical category over the 2008 figures. Tennessee improved from 17.3 to 29.3 points per game while going from 268.8 to 383.5 yards per game in total offense. Kiffin came to Tennessee from the Oakland Raiders, where he served as head coach from 2007-08. At 31, he was the youngest head coach in the NFL’s modern era. Oakland’s offense significantly improved in his first year, up 7.2 points per game and 48.6 yards per game from 2006. Prior to his first head coaching job, Kiffin spent six years as an assistant coach for Pete Carroll at the University of Southern California, including two years as the offensive coordinator (2005-06). During his first tenure with the Trojans, USC captured two national championships and compiled a 65-12 record. Kiffin was pro-

moted to passing game coordinator in 2004 and helped Matt Leinart win the Heisman Trophy as he passed for 3,322 yards with 33 touchdowns and just six interceptions. He took over as USC’s offensive coordinator in 2005 and led the Trojans to a scoring average of 49.1 points per game and 579.8 yards per game of total offense during his two years as offensive coordinator. Kiffin started at USC in 2001 as the tight ends coach and then coached the wide receivers during his remaining five years. Kiffin graduated from Fresno State in 1998 after playing quarterback for three seasons (1994-96) for the Bulldogs. He began his coaching career as a student assistant at Fresno State under Pat Hill in 1997 and 1998. He moved on to Colorado State in 1999 as offensive line assistant. He spent the 2000 season as defensive quality control assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars under Tom Coughlin. Kiffin attended Bloomington (Minn.) Jefferson High, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He has two daughters, Landry and Presley, and one son, Knox. While he remains focused on his role with the Crimson Tide, Kiffin said he is eager to begin the next phase of his career with the Owls. “After meeting numerous times with President John Kelly, Anthony Barbar, Abdol Moabery, Dick Schmidt and Pat Chun, it was obvious the commitment here at Florida Atlantic is to take this program to the next level,” said Kiffin. “I’m very honored and humbled for Florida Atlantic to give myself and our staff an opportunity to build a championship program here. There’s no timeline for championships, but there is a commitment to go to work every day to get there.” FAU Vice President and Director of Athletics Pat Chun said Kiffin has an opportunity in Boca Raton to define his legacy. With a ceremonial groundbreaking in January for the new Schmidt Family Complex for Academic and Athletic Excellence, made possible by a Schmidt Family Foundation gift, the largest gift in FAU history, Kiffin will be given all the tools he needs to succeed. “Nobody wanted to be the head coach of Florida Atlantic more than Lane Kiffin,” said Pat Chun. “He emerged as our top candidate because of his conviction and belief in FAU. He impressed us with his humility and plan to demand excellence out of our student-athletes. We are excited to have a coach of his caliber lead our program.”
