Community Junior League of Boca Raton Names New President

By: Michael Demyan

The Junior League of Boca Raton recently announced that Renata Sans de Negri will be the new president of the nonprofit organization. Sans de Negri, who earned an MBA in international business from Lynn University, has been a part of the JLBR for the past eight years, serving through numerous different positions, including child welfare co-chair and personnel manager. “It is such an honor that the League instills the trust in me to lead the organization. I am deeply grateful and extremely excited. I have big shoes to fill!” Sans de Negri said. The JLBR currently has 692 members who donate roughly 25,000 hours of community service per year.

They are always dedicated to improving the community through their volunteer work and focusing on issues such as hunger and child welfare. Along with their service to the community, the organization averages raising more than $250,000 every year. Sans de Negri also served as a chair member with In the Pines, a nonprofit partner out of West Delray Beach which assists local farmers. Her work there led to the JLBR expanding their service. “From the first smile that I encountered there, my heart melted,” she said. “The League is involved in so many projects around our community, this one was personal to me.” The organization has named a total of 43 presidents during the 46 years they have been a part of the Boca Raton community and now Sans de Negri is their 44th. She succeeds Kirsten Stanley, who became the president in 2015. Stanley has been instrumental in numerous recent successes for the JLBR. During her time as president, the organization received over $55,000 in grants and trained numerous members and other nonprofit organizations. They also had 89 new members join the efforts to make the city of Boca Raton the best it can be. Stanley believes that the JLBR’s success will strongly continue under Sans di Negri’s leadership as she thinks that she is well fit for the position. “Renata brings outstanding professionalism and strategic thought to the role,” Stanley said. “She will continue the League’s 46-year legacy of women as catalysts for change.”

Kaufman Lynn Construction Uses Take Your Dog to Work Day to Raise Shelter Awareness By: Michael Demyan So this is where they go when they head out of the front door every morning. Employees at Kaufman Lynn Construction were able to bring their furry family to work as they took part in Take Your Dog to Work Day. It was the 19th year that companies around the country participated in the national “holiday.” There were twelve dogs hanging around the office as the canine companions were able to watch their owners during the time when they are usually waiting for them to come back home. The day is used to bring awareness to dogs in shelters and promote adoptions. During the whole month of June, employees donated dog food, gift cards and other items to the Tri-County Animal Rescue, which is a nonprofit no-kill shelter. The only funding they receive is from private donations, so they rely heavily on the community to step in and help so that they can provide the best care they can. A monetary donation is not the only way someone can help out, as volunteers are always welcome for tasks such as walking the dogs, cleaning the cat room

and helping out at fundraising events. The rescue has saved over 55,000 animals from being euthanized since its inception as they have went on to find loving homes. Tri-County Animal Rescue cofounder and executive director Suzi Goldsmith was very thankful for the support they received from Kaufman Lynn Construction. “Tri-County Animal Rescue offers its deepest gratitude to Kaufman Lynn Construction for its amazingly generous and heartwarming support of our rescue and adoption efforts at the shelter,” she said. “For so many of our cats and dogs that have not yet found their forever homes, the kindness and compassion you have displayed is even more meaningful to all of us. Thank you for realizing the importance of our work and for making it possible.” Take Your Dog to Work Day is not the only program Kaufman Lynn Construction participates in to help make the community a better place. Their Positive Workplace Committee initiative looks forward to the upcoming Women in Distress Clothing Drive and backpack drive for Florence Fuller Child Development Centers.

MMA Featherweight Aaron Rajman Killed in Boca Raton Home

By: Gabriel Diaz MMA featherweight Aaron Rajman, 25, was killed in his Boca Raton on Monday, July 3 following a home invasion. Deputies responded to a shooting at 10:24 p.m. in Ramjan’s Boca Raton home in the 22700 block of 65th Terrace. Upon arrival, deputies learned that unknown males entered the home where an altercation ensued that resulted in a male being shot. Rajman was found deceased due to gunshot wounds. This shooting was the second in a six-minute span in the Palm Beach County area. The suspects have not been identified and are thought to have fled in a vehicle after the killing. Ramjan’s killing came as a tragedy to all who knew him. MMA fighter and friend Steve “The Creepy Weasel” Montgomery tweeted out his thoughts the following

day. “A good person and friend has passed,” he wrote. “Rest in peace and power Aaron, you will be missed and thought of often.” Ramjan was known in the MMA world for his strong Jewish faith, and at times would even walk into the ring wearing tzitzit and a yarmulke. On an essay that he wrote in the website MMAFutures.com, Rajman explained his run-ins with law enforcement officers, drugs, and other negative things. Rajman stated that his faith and his family had been his main focus since then, and attributed them as the things that saved him. Ramjan was so invested in his faith, that he was even known to cook Sabbath dinner for his family and friends every now and again. As an amateur, his record was 8-1. Since he entered the MMA three years ago and went professional, he racked up a 2-2 record. The MMA fighter was dealing with recuperating from a leg injury he had recently suffered and was training to get ready for his next fight. The MMA South Florida Facebook page posted: “The world lost another warrior today. RIP Aaron Rajman. You will be missed.” The sheriff ’s office asks anyone with information to call Palm Beach County Crime Stoppers at 800-458-8477.

7-Eleven Celebrates 90th Birthday with Free Slurpees By: Gabriel Diaz July 11 is 7-Eleven’s Birthday and this year for their 90th birthday, the American classic is celebrating by giving any guest, customer or not, a free small Slurpee. Guests can choose between different flavors such as Coca-Cola, blueberry, watermelon/lime, cherry, and lemonade. The 7-Eleven located on NW 2nd Avenue in Boca was full of excited guests who could not wait to get their hands on a Slurpee since the day proved to be a hot one with a high of 92 degrees and clear sunny skies. The 2nd Avenue store, apart from their usual two employees, hired two volunteers, Taylor Knoll and Andra Durgee to help serve Slurpees to guests since the demand for them is so high every year. Both Taylor and Andra are students at Boca High and got the chance to volunteer. This is Taylor’s third year volunteering for 7-Eleven and serving up delicious and refreshing Slurpees to guests while for Andra, it’s her first time doing it. Andra said she got the opportunity to volunteer because she is friends with Taylor. “It’s fun, sometimes there’s people, sometimes there’s not, either

way, it’s not boring because we’re doing it together,” she said. Walking into the 7-Eleven, one can see the long line of parents and children as well as the occasional college student, businessman, worker, and even FAU’s women’s basketball team. Truly 7-Eleven’s birthday is a community wide event for those who know of it in Boca Raton, and for those who do not, like Boca Raton resident Giovanni Martin, it is a pleasant surprise. “I didn’t know there were free Slurpees until I came in,” he said. Giovanni got his favorite, a Coca-Cola Slurpee, a Mr. Goodbar, and bought a set of Florida Lottery tickets. FAU student and local resident Zachary Scop was very excited about getting his Slurpee saying, “Dude, Slurpees are my life!” considering he was anticipating the day for over a week. The free Slurpee promotion, which goes from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. is the beginning of a Slurpee promotion week for 7-Eleven. Starting July 12 until July 18, if you buy seven Slurpees with the 7-Eleven app, you will get 11 free Slurpee coupons. 7-Eleven is also selling metal-like Slurpee cups for $2.99 at all of their stores. With the purchase of the reusable cups, the customer gets their first fill up for free.

One of America’s Best Communities in Educating Youth to Read at Grade Level Living up to the idiom once an All-America City, still an All-America City, Delray Beach made history recently by becoming the only municipality in the state to be honored with this prestigious award three times. That feat was accomplished by one city employee, a few nonprofit organization members, school officials and community leaders – some who traveled to Denver earlier this month to compete in the 2017 All-America City Awards, which are given by the National Civic League. Delray Beach also landed the designation in 1993 and 2001. Getting there though was not easy. It took some hard work. This year’s All-America City competition recognized communities that have engaged residents in innovative, inclusive and effective efforts to advance childhood literacy. Much credit should go to Janet Meeks, the City’s education coordinator, who has been championing the cause for children from low-income families for many years. Very few public servants are as passionate about children’s issues at least publicly – as Meeks, who has been with the city for close to 30 years. She was part of the four-mem-

ber delegation that represented the City at the competition in Denver. They told the story of their ongoing collaborative efforts over the last five years to prepare children for kindergarten, reduce chronic absenteeism and increase participation in summer reading programs. Last school year, slightly more than one half of all third graders in Palm Beach County met Florida’s standards in reading. Forty eight percent of those same students were reading well below grade level and were retained. This year’s results were recently released and the number of third graders who earned a Level 3 or above in English inched slightly by 2 percentage points to 54 percent. Still, that was 4 percentage points lower than the statewide average of 58 percent. While there has been much hoopla over the city winning the award, it is important that the record be set straight: only a few people deserve to take credit for the accomplishment. Among the few is the education coordinator, who many people know as the engine behind many of the city-sanctioned youth initiatives or as the city worker who always reports on educational and youth programs. But what many do not know, she has been battered and bruised over the years for

standing up for our youth. In the early years of the International Baccalaureate program at Atlantic High school, she wormed her way to the table to make sure the college preparatory program would allow our students to earn the IB diploma and continue their studies at a fouryear university, just as it was sold to the parents. When the school district moved Atlantic High School from Seacrest Boulevard to West Atlantic Avenue, Meeks was tasked with doing a lot of the dirty work and, at times, was the one who got cursed out by disappointed parents. And as a board member, she made sure deserving graduating students at Atlantic High school received scholarships for college through the Dare to be Great Foundation. Time and time again, she donated her own money to support local youth causes. So it is only logical that she bask in the glory as some, who ridiculed her as she applied for the ¬¬¬ award, have now jumped on the band wagon to share the limelight. I find it interesting that when the City got word that it was a finalist and was invited to the conference in

Denver, one of her bosses told her to “go raise your own money” after she asked about funds to prepare for the event. One prominent public figure recently referred to the recognition as a “touchy feely” award. None-the-less, 53 communities across the country vied for this “touchy feely” award and only 15 were selected in the super bowl of community service recognitions. While the award does not carry a monetary prize, it offers bragging rights of the good work being done in our community to address one or more of the challenges that can undermine early literacy. It also often brings in more tourism, new business and even better bond ratings. It is only fitting that the City sponsors an event to recognize the leader and her team for their accomplishment. As a reporter and an editor who has covered this City for 30 years and a community servant who has volunteered with youth for as many years, I owe it to the residents to know the truth. After all, if I do not set the record straight, who else will?

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Be the Best That You Can Be! True human greatness is not measured by how high an individual rises in personal and professional life, nor in the size of one’s personal material wealth. One’s individual value is better determined by the size of one’s heart and the right actions that proceed from valid convictions of a person! There must be flexibility manifested by one who can be and do well at whatever activity or level a person happens to be, while not losing touch with others less favored! Those who may have reached the highest levels of success in any vocation or profession, must know how to relate to peers and to subordi-

nates in genuine humbleness, instead of irrelevant arrogance. As I once read, those who presume to be the “top banana” should never cut themselves off from the whole bunch! A position of authority in any enterprise does not require nor demand isolation of its occupant from all others who are contributing, at many levels, to the success of a project. In fact, such success is only achievable when true, broad cooperation exists among peers and principal in leading an organization, advancing a project, or creating some new thing of special significance. People need people, and those

who learn to collaborate with one another have the greatest chances of accomplishing significant projects. It’s from those around that new ideas, unique perspectives, and awareness of consequences can be freely shared! On the road to success, whether personal, or of a project we’re engaged with, difficulties and mishaps are ever present. Even actual failure often attempts to be an impediment to final completion of what one is involved with. Yet, failure per se is seldom final to those determined to succeed. Thus, it needs not be viewed as permanent whenever it may occur! The problem is

that too many persons give-up too soon; they prefer to dwell in gloom than to seek creative ways to repair and remake what can be corrected. As history testifies, there has been much through the ages that has been brought from the ashes into new, productive use. What is so quickly discarded loses the chances of being re-examined, restored, and even brought to greater usefulness. Yet, only the best people know this, and can act with understanding that brings the desired success!

sports FAU’s Tyler Frank Officially a Member of Team USA

With the announcement of the Collegiate National Team roster on Wednesday, Tyler Frank of Florida Atlantic University has become the first baseball player in program history to be selected as a member of Team USA. Frank was part of a select few collegians invited to Cary, North Carolina, last month for the USA Baseball Tryout Camp and survived to this, the final 24-man roster. The Loxahatchee, Florida native is the lone Conference USA representative on the national team, and one of just three players both hailing from and playing collegiately in Florida (joining Tyler Holton from Florida State and Tallahassee, and UCF’s Bryce Tucker, from Apopka). The final iteration of the squad

was chosen ahead of the Wednesday night opening matchup in the USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series. Team USA has won both of its international friendship series thus far, over Chinese Taipei and Cuba, going 7-2 against those teams. With Tuesday night’s 6-4 win over the Futures League All-Stars, they improved to 12-3 overall during their 2017 slate. Frank, who will be a junior in the fall for the Owls, has started 10 of the 12 games he’s appeared in and has been asked to play every infield position as well as catcher and leftfield for the national team. Highlights of his summer have included scoring the game-winning run on June 28 against Chinese Taipei, and on June 23, a 3-for-4 game with two doubles, three RBI, and five runs scored.

Lynn Women’s Golf Garners Four WGCA All-America Scholar Four members of Lynn University's women's golf team were selected as All-American Scholars, as announced by the Women's Golf Coaches Association on Wednesday. This marks the sixth consecutive year with at least three All-American Scholar selections for the Fighting Knights, and 12th consecutive year with at least one honoree. A total of 952 women's collegiate golfers from NCAA Division I, II and III and NAIA were recognized as WGCA All-American Scholars. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50. The Fighting Knights were one of three schools from the Sunshine State Conference with four award winners, along with Barry and Saint Leo. Overall,

the SSC picked up 22 WGCA All-American Scholars as Florida Tech (3), Tampa (3), Nova Southeastern (2) and Rollins (2) all received recognition. Among the members of the Blue and White to be honored were Jenny Ayala, Samantha Barber, Cristina Gutierrez and Kristina Ortiz. Ayala and Barber are the eighth and ninth members of Lynn's women's golf program be threetime WGCA All-American Scholars while Gutierrez and Ortiz also repeated in their accolades. Lynn finished the season at the NCAA South/Southeast Super Region 2 Tournament after qualifying for the postseason for the sixth consecutive year. The Fighting Knights return all five starters, including All-SSC selection Samantha Barber.
