Edward Harris, 66, Former Boca High Principal who saw the Best in Everyone A figurative pall is hovering the School District of Palm Beach County, St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Boynton Beach and family and friends of Ed Harris as they grieve the passing of the longtime educator. The former Boca Raton High School principal, who died Thursday after a lengthy illness, left a lasting impact on many generations over his 42 years in the system. He was loved by his students and colleagues and respected on so many fronts. I met Mr. Harris, 66, in the late 1980s and over the years, I found him to be a true visionary, a good “ole school” teacher and a leader. I was privy to several one-on-one conversations with him and I quickly learned he had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He also respected everyone equally, from a student to the superintendent. He had a knack of making everyone feel comfortable and special. As a reporter with one of the area’s dailies, I sometimes wrote stories that were not flattering of the subjects. Using football metaphors, he would caution me

to be careful: “When you are on the line of scrimmage, you got to know who got your back, you got to know who got your front and you got to know got your side,” the die-hard football fan would say to me, referring to the subjects in my stories. With his emphasis on relationship building and servant leadership, he developed many outstanding teachers, staff and students. Among them was Shanda Davis, who met him when she moved to the area in 1996. After learning of her desire to be an educator, Mr. Harris mentored her through her doctoral degree. He gave her books, articles and other reading material. He also made phone calls to a local university to open doors for her and he offered her sage advice. “He took me from being a regular classroom teacher to where I am now,” said Davis, who is close to completing her doctorate and worked as an English teacher for Mr. Harris at L.C. Swain Middle School from 2008 until 2011. “Outside of my parents he would be the most influential person in my life. He said, ‘As a black woman, I have to

produce above the rest….’” For generations, Mr. Harris’ passion was to daily nurture, train, encourage, challenge, and love kids, all for the glory of God! In fact, until he retired four years ago, when he was not working in the school house, he was faithfully laboring at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He also sang in the choir, and served as a on the Trustee Board as well as a Sunday School teacher. Among the things I will miss about Mr. Harris is his singing. He was a gifted hymn liner, in fact, he probably was one of the last remaining locals who could still sing that mournful, beautiful style of church music that has not changed since the 18th century. Oh how he reminded me of my days in that North Carolina Baptist church. Mr. Harris began his career at Atlantic High School as an algebra and mathematics teacher. Not long after he became an assistant principal, then a principal. His career took off and he served as an assistant principal or principal at nine schools including Forest Park Elementary, Delray Full Service Center and

Glades Central Community High School. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and the Palm Beach County Retired Educators Association. Mr. Harris was married to Kathy Edwards Harris for 35 years and was a proud father to two children: Kayla A. Harris and Edward M. Harris, who followed his footsteps. In fact, that his son is a school teacher was his badge of honor. Kathy Harris also retired as a principal in the district. Mr. Harris leaves a legacy of thousands of educators he helped boost, community causes he impacted, and as a mentor to many in the school district, sharing his encyclopedic knowledge with hundreds of students. We are so thankful for the privilege of knowing and working alongside such an historic figure as Ed Harris for the past 42 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ed’s family, friends, and loved ones. Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Seeking Understanding and Peace! Confusion reigns around the globe in many forms, already for quite some time since the human race decided to follow its own devices, instead of recognizing the divine regulations for their varied affairs. Without the directives which they could enjoy, humans react to the manifold changes that occur, never kanowing for certain whether they will be for good or for ill, until they actually happen. Even then, many remain confused, not sufficiently persuaded of what their course of action should be! Opinions vary according to cultures, religions, political ideologies, and the human capability to interpret

what they see around them is also most diverse, on account of what they rejected, and the uncertain foundations upon which they chose to build their reality, and operate in the world, further promoting a complete lack of certainty about basic life factors! Although change has been a consistent occurrence on earth from ages immemorial, (as it will continue to be) its occurrence profoundly affects every area and manner of living. Furthermore, these are also matters that are fully established in all cultures, in every climate, and among peoples of all colors, shapes, and languages, even though the rate of change, and its unique

nature will vary from place to place, and on account of manifold factors! Yet, the feebleness of human nature, the immense ignorance of countless rational earth dwellers, besides the contrary disposition of individuals or peoples, even in the face of what’s real, still much confusion remains, and many persons prefer to act according to their own impulses and preferences, rather than to what is conventionally accepted as the way one should go, in a variety of life situations! The entire globe can be enriched through more interaction among the peoples of earth, especially now that it has become more possible than

ever before, on account of rapid and varied ways of travel and of communication, beside devices which considerably accelerate rapid, effective, and illuminating human interactions, not to mention the faster ways of traveling around the earth. Without the imposition of life-styles, religions, and cultural habits unique to certain peoples, human interaction among citizens of different nations can contribute to better understanding among all human dwellers, as they jointly advance through new routes to mutual cooperation and peace!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

War is Hell in “Hacksaw Ridge”

“Hacksaw Ridge” is brutal. We all know that war is Hell, but director Mel Gibson likes to rub our nose in it. “ Hacksaw Ridge” is based on a true World War II story. Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) became the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1945. Doss was a US Army medic with the 77th infantry division. Despite being ridiculed and insulted for his religious beliefs, Doss felt obliged to enlist in the US Army. When his outfit was sent to the Japanese island of Okinawa in 1944, his resolve was put to the test. The ridge of the title was a sheer rock cliff about 300-foot high. Atop the ridge were Japanese sharp shooters and machine gunners. One can only wonder why this ridge in the middle of nowhere was considered so important. In time of battle soldiers are ordered to react, regardless of the outcome. The attack on Hacksaw Ridge

www.bocaratontribune.com

was suicidal. The fact that Desmond Doss had no weapon to fight back with made it even more so. When the order to retreat was made by Sgt. Howell (Vince Vaughn) and Capt. Glover (Sam Worthington), Doss ignored it, and went behind enemy lines to rescue wounded soldiers. He saved 75 in all, carrying most of them on his back while dodging enemy fire. Private Doss survived the massacre to return home to his love, Dorothy Schutte (Teresa Palmer). The Medal of Honor was just a footnote to this religious Virginian. It is honorable that Australian Mel Gibson is paying tribute to a true hero. At more than two hours long, it is a long slog. As a movie is it not very entertaining, but as history it is significant. It makes one think twice about the hawk mentality of politicians who would think nothing of starting another war. Three stars

Ways God Is At Work In You – At Work Have you ever thought of your work as more than a job? Perhaps you are among the people that regard your work as an opportunity of ministry. But have you ever considered your work could be a place where God is at work in you? Keith Welton, a pastor who has spent time in the corporate world, has written Working for Glory: A Theology for Doing Work that Matters. Drawing from it he wrote an article, “Six Ways God’s at Work in You,” that appeared on desiringgod.org. I have borrowed his bullet points, adding my own thoughts. Basically, Welton suggests God is using the workplace to: Focus your faith. There are few places where our faith can be exercised more vigorously than where we work. When we make plans and they fail, or when even good plans present unexpected challenges, we often find ourselves wondering, “What do I (we) do now?” At such times it helps to remember the promise of Proverbs 3:5-6, which tells us to, “Trust in the Lord will all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” Focus your heart. Motivations are very important for approaching our work. Are we doing it solely for the income, to receive recognition, or some other self-oriented reason? Or is our desire to honor God through our work, as Colossians 3:23-24 urges us: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Focus your hands. We all need direction, a sense of purpose in our lives, and work can help in providing that. But Ecclesiastes 9:10 offers this sobering observation: “Whatever your hand finds

to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.” So we are to do what we can, the best we can, while we can. Focus your love. As Galatians 5:14 tells us, “For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” And what better place is there to encounter our “neighbors” and demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ to them – even those who seem unlovable? Focus your mind. We have all discovered many of the practices and philosophies of today’s business and professional world run counter to the teachings of the Bible. So in our quest to succeed and advance at work, we also must strive to keep in mind God’s truth and apply biblical principles to responsibilities, challenges and opportunities we confront each day. “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2). Focus your witness. CBMC reminds us part of the role God has entrusted to us is to serve as “marketplace ambassadors,” representing Jesus Christ just as a nation’s ambassador would represent it in another country. Jesus commanded His followers, “…and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). For some of us, “Jerusalem” is the office where we work. Traveling for business, we may also venture to other cities – even other parts of the world. When we do, we should keep in mind that we do so as ambassadors of Christ.

First East Boca Fitness Crawl Sponsored by Raw Juce a Success By: Alyssa Lamp This month Raw Juce sponsored the very first East Boca Fitness Crawl where guests were invited to participate in a run from one studio to another. Participants started at different fitness studios and rotated to the next. After they experienced all three studios, all runners ran to the rooftop of Raw Juce where they enjoyed a 20 minute cool down yoga session with Alexi from The Yoga Joint Boca. Dj Sal was also present at the event and guests enjoyed free food and were entered in a raffle to earn cool prizes from sponsors which include; Gravity +

Oxygen Fitness, Core Evolution, Hitt56, and Namastacy Yoga Corporation. Kristen Fraga, assistant manager, says “This year turned out better than I had hoped! I am looking forward to many more fitness crawls in the near future. We want to bring the community together and spread the word on health and fitness while donating to different local charities!” Tickets this year were sold out and all ticket sales benefited the Broward Children’s Center. Next year, the East Boca fitness crawl is planning to become the Central Boca Fitness Crawl and will take place at the Glades location, early December.

Spain-Based Adolfo Domínguez Picks Boca Raton as the location of Its Second Boutique In The U.S.

Adolfo Domínguez has opened its second fashion boutique in the U.S. this month at Town Center at Boca Raton featuring the Spain-based designer’s 2016 Fall/Winter Collection for women and men. Located in the Palm Court, near Bloomingdale’s and next to Bvlgari, the 1,498-square-foot store joins Adolfo Domínguez’s first location at Shops at Merrick Park in Coral Gables as a third is planned to debut next month at Brickell City Centre in Miami. Reflecting his design philosophy of poetry, beauty and simplicity, the newest boutique features two AD Collections – its AD WOMAN and AD MAN – and its line of signature accessories. All exuding Domínguez’s impeccable signature design in a choice of soulful materials, clothes – both daywear and eveningwear – and accessories “match today’s pace of life without losing their essence: simple poetry”. The designer’s 2016 Black and White Collection features “casual looks, for the vast minority”… a market the designer defines as “intellectually refined”. The global designer fashion label was founded in Spain by Adolfo Domínguez in the 1970s that through five decades has developed a renowned international reputation in the fashion industry for quality and elegance. With its flagship boutique in Madrid, Spain, the brand has points of sale in 50 countries (including Venezuela, France, United Kingdom, Thailand, Australia, Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago), with only two in the United States — both in South Florida — with

additional distribution channels, including e-commerce. The Adolfo Domínguez brand designs, manufactures and distributes a broad range of women’s and men’s ready-to-wear products and accessories. Eyewear and fragrances are manufactured and distributed under license. In strategic expansion, designer Adolfo Domínguez chose South Florida as the brand’s entry destination in the United States. “Following suit with our boutique locations around the globe residing in fashion-sophisticated luxury shopping markets, we are very excited to bring our second boutique to Boca Raton as the social and holiday season begins,” noted Adolfo Domínguez. “The next step in consolidating our presence in Florida is the opening of Brickell City Center in the coming weeks.” U By Adolfo Domínguez Creative Director Tiziana Domínguez, the designer’s daughter, hosted the boutique’s official grand opening “Taste of Spain” reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony tonight. Adolfo Domínguez Fashion Coordinator and International Coach Eladio Gonzalez who works with the design department to deliver the brand vision adapted to the different geographical areas and coaches the brand’s teams in more than 50 countries greeted guests along with the Adolfo Domínguez South Florida executive team: Operations and General Manager and Expansion Manager Gabriela Corominas and Commercial Manager Carlos E. Lopez-Alvarez.

$11.6M Federal Grant to Expand Carver Middle School’s IB Program, Add 4 Others

November 18-20

By: Staff Reports The School District of Palm Beach County this week announced the next step in increasing the system’s portfolio of educational options by expanding its International Baccalaureate program at Carver Middle School, thanks to an $11.6 million federal grant. "I am extremely excited about the MSAP grant awarded and the endless opportunities that lie ahead for the students," Carver principal Kiwana Alexander Prophete said in a news release. "I look forward to enhancing the IB choice program with the inclusion of STEM." The money, from the U.S. Department of Education Magnet Schools Assistance Program, will also be used to create a STEM-Infused International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme at Congress Middle School, Grove Park Elementary School, Howell L. Watkins Middle School and Palmetto Elementary School. “Our Choice programs are among the best in Florida, and this grant will give Palm Beach County families even more options for their children’s education,” said school’s superintendent Robert Avossa. “The International Baccalaureate Programme is recognized worldwide as a demanding and prestigious program that prepares students for college and postgraduate success, and we are grateful for the opportunity afforded us by this generous grant.” Palm Beach County was one of only nine districts nationwide to receive the grant. The money will pay for implementing rigorous, student-centered curriculum in the STEM (Science, Technol-

ogy, Engineering and Math) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) fields. More than $7.2 million of the grant will be immediately awarded to provide laboratories, technology, materials, supplies and equipment, as well as professional development of magnet specialty teachers and curriculum for the projectbased learning IB Programme so that the schools are ready to offer the programs to students for the 2017-2018 school year. The remaining funds will be awarded over the course of the three-year grant. The International Baccalaureate program is well known throughout the world as being a rigorous and interdisciplinary program of study. The program provides students a high quality, international educational experience and a global perspective on their coursework. The courses focus on international mindedness, and analytical and writing skills, IB officials say. The Magnet Schools Assistance Program grants allow for school districts to attract more racially-diverse students to schools that have a proportion of students who belong to a specific minority group that is significantly greater than the district average percentage of that group, thus reducing what is called Minority Group Isolation. “This grant means an opportunity for our communities to further close the achievement gap and provide more school choice options for all of our students,” Peter Licata, director of Choice and Career Programs for the District, said in a news release.

sports Strikers Close 2016 NASL Season with Win Versus Ottawa Fury FC

By: Pedro Heizer

They may not be going to the NASL playoffs, but the Fort Lauderdale Strikers closed their 2016 NASL Season with a strong showing in Ottawa where the visitors defeated Fury FC 1-0. Junior Sandoval got the Strikers off on the right foot in the third minute when the Honduran midfielder was able to bend a curving shot to the lower corner of goalkeeper Romuald Peiser’s goal but was deflected. Fort Lauderdale pressured early and often. In the sixth minute, it was Italian forward Amauri who headed a ball on goal but was saved by Peiser. Strikers goalkeeper, Bruno Cardoso, had one of his busiest games on goal for Fort Lauderdale as the Brazilian was able to defend 17 total shots, of which 6 were on target. Fury FC caught new life in the middle of the first half after a laser shot by Lance Rozeboom was cleared by Bruno, the home team went to threaten the Strikers defense three more times before the half, with its best opportunity coming in the 44th minute when Lance Haworth broke through the Strikers defense and found himself one on one with the keeper, but his shot went just wide. Fort Lauderdale found the

breakthrough in the 66th minute when substitute, Kleberson was able to send a perfectly-placed free kick that found the head of Amauri, who this time, was able to head it home for his fifth of the season. Despite trailing 1-0, Fury FC continued to dominate possession, while the Strikers tried to take their best chances off the counterattack. Ottawa led the possession game 64 percent to Fort Lauderdale’s 37 percent. Ottawa continued to attack but Bruno was able to preserve the clean sheet, his sixth of the season. With the win, the Strikers equals its all-time record of 41 points in an NASL season. Despite not making the playoffs, head coach Caio Zanardi had nothing but praises for his team, who not only equaled last season’s total points but also went to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the furthest the club has ever gone. “We had a great win today and equaled a team record 41 points for the season. I thank all my players and technical staff for a fantastic season. We had the best point total even in the spring for this club (15) and the deepest run in club history in the US Open Cup. We beat two MLS teams on our way to being the only non-MLS team in the quarterfinals. “

Despite Game Cancellation, Senior Night Continued for Boca Christian It was a weird series of events, this past Friday afternoon, when just 30 minutes before the game they received a call from Aukela Christian Academy forfeiting the game. Sources say that Aukela had three football players on academic probation. With that in mind just before the game, the principle called in the head coach and cancelled the season(story still developing). But besides there being no game, Boca

Thank you Representative Ted Deutch for Supporting Home Healthcare for Florida Seniors

Nearly 350,000 seniors and Americans with disabilities across Florida depend on high-quality, cost-effective skilled home health for post-acute, rehabilitative and chronic care services. Despite the value of home health, recent policies have put access to this essential health sector at risk. The Partnership thanks Representative Ted Deutch for leading efforts in Congress to ensure seniors and individuals with disabilities are able to receive care in the comfort of their own homes, where they can remain independent and be close to loved ones. We applaud Representative Deutch for recognizing the clinical value of home health and the key role it can plan in achieving savings, improving our nation’s healthcare system, and securing Medicare for the future.

Thank you, Representative Deutch, for supporting Medicare beneficiaries’ access to skilled home healthcare services!
