FAU’s Postseason Run Comes to an End
Thousands of people upload videos of themselves covering the latest popular songs to YouTube, but few are ever able to turn it into fame and success. South Florida’s Austin Mahone is one of those few. Mahone was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas and in 2010 he began to upload videos to YouTube. A year later, the then 15-year-old covered Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe,” which propelled him into the spotlight. Today, the video has reached over 17 million views. “It was definitely strange for me at first, because I was a shy kid,” Mahone said. See page 4 for full story

Singer Austin Mahone is Ready to Start His Tour in South Florida By: Michael Demyan Thousands of people upload videos of themselves covering the latest popular songs to YouTube, but few are ever able to turn it into fame and success. “ I had some friends, but I wasn’t one of the popular kids, so when I started, people started to come up to me at the mall, stores and school. It was all new for me.” Mahone signed with Chase/ Universal Republic Records and moved to Florida in 2012, and that is when he started to realize that something special was happening. Soon after, he released the hit single “Say You’re Just a Friend” featuring Flo Rida, which peaked at number four on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles list. “It was nothing that no one really saw coming to be honest,” he said. “When it all started happening, all my family and my friends were supportive.”
Mahone continued to follow the fast track to stardom and when Taylor Swift began her “RED Tour” in 2013, he was chosen as one of the opening acts. “I was like ‘This is what dreams are made of right here,’” he said. “Not everybody gets to go on a tour with Taylor Swift and open up for her. It was incredible. It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.” The shy kid who started out by singing on YouTube started to grow into a popstar and after the initial strange feeling of being recognized in public, Mahone has since gotten used to the attention from his fans, who are dubbed his Mahomies. He now boasts more than 33 million followers across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and many of them make attempts to get close to him through any means necessary, including a girl he recalls who recently joined his gym to watch him work out. Now as a multiple award winning artist, Mahone is grateful for everything that has happened to him during the journey to where he is today. “It’s been amazing,” he said. “I’ve got to experience a lot of incredible things, meet a lot of influential people and learn from my experiences and mistakes. I keep growing everyday.” After releasing the music video for his single “Lady” featuring Pitbull last month, Mahone kicked off his “A Tour For Me + You” tour at the Culture Room in Fort Lauderdale on May 31.

There are More Good News Around Us How many times have we heard people say there is not enough good or positive news in the paper? I can count numerous times and I am going on the record to say it depends on the publication that one is reading. By and large, there are far more good things happening in our neighborhoods than we realize. I can attest that there has been more “good stories” than negative news in almost every edition of the Boca Raton Tribune in the past 14 months. That is not because our reporters and photographers go out searching for happy news. We are professionals and as such, we report the news -good with the bad - as we see it. As your community newspaper, we take pride in holding the mirror to the city for you to see. Just recently, Florence Fuller Child Care Development Center, one of our premier child care providers in
the city, recognized 28 men and three students who went above and beyond to make life better for those in their communities. As you read each nominee’s bio, it will warm your heart to know there are so many caring people and positive things happening around us. This was the 16th year that the organization has held the annual Men With Caring Hearts recognition program. Florence Fuller has honored a tremendous group of people this year. The board and staff know quite well the value of a strong benevolent base, but, more importantly, they know the value of a strong community. There also are those unsung heroes in our community such as Boca Raton’s Promise founder Rita Thrasher, who for several decades, first as an educator and in her retirement serving as an advocate for children’s causes. These days she devotes her time to bringing
awareness to mental health issues. Although she has been here less than a year, Ilene Glickman, head of the Children’s Department at Delray Beach Public Library, is carving her way into many families’ hearts. Glickman, who took the helm after longtime librarian Dr. Lynda Hunter retired, comes with a wealth of innovative ideas to get kids develop a love for reading. She launched the digital media project where more than 30 elementary students spent six weeks making a public service announcement about the issue of bullying. She is organizing cooking classes for kids and a Touch a Truck Day, where kids will get an opportunity to get a close up to one of those huge monsters. Another rising community servant is Jervonte Edmonds, a young man from Lake Worth who founded
Suits for Seniors in 2015. The nonprofit organization rewards participants for successfully completing its eight-week life skills-training program that teaches financial literacy, career exploration, college transition and leadership. To date more than 300 young men and one young lady are sporting suits, thanks to this group. When you look at the people I mentioned about, these are ordinary people like you and me. What differentiates them is they find the time to give, they find the time to help and these men and women find the time to be wherever they are needed. Let us face I, many of us feel like we have less time. These people however, find more time. We salute them all and wish them continued success in the future.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
To Mend a Broken World! Our world is a mess! It has been so since after creation, and continues to deteriorate now at a much faster pace than before. At previous eras, there have appeared different persons with unique discoveries, bright ideas, and concrete suggestions for helping improve the human condition. Those who tried, succeeded. But those numbers must increase for a marked different be seen and felt! Sadly, so much human lethargy has set in everywhere, so that personal creativity appears to have given up, in terms of seeking, finding, and implementing potential solutions to much that adversely affects our world.
Yet, a significant solution will not necessarily come from new, developing technologies. The progress of science these days, however impressive and often meaningful, is equally incapable of mending our broken world, even if its contributions at several levels can be truly significant on many accounts! Because world problems are so enormous, and humanly impossible to be adequately resolved, many individuals give up further considerations; just because they can’t discover a mammoth solution, they fail to recognize that it’s only in small portions that the plight of humanity can be addressed in different contexts around the globe.
Individuals, and small communities everywhere, need to assume greater responsibility for the small, albeit significant tasks that everyone can perform. Every person must start with one’s self, and determine what and how each can do to improve his/her lot in life, and effectively instruct others, beside concretely attempting specifically to aid one’s neighbor, even several who may reside geographically distantly. An important element is to make every effort on a continual basis, while devising new methods, and implementing fresh approaches that can accelerate the process. People in need should not become mere recipients of
aid; they also can and must be engaged in doing whatever they are able, for the sake of others in conditions similar to their own, as they experience equal needs! Rabbi Jonathan Sacks offers great encouragement in this regard when, in one of his writings, he leaves this simple, yet decisive, challenge: “We mend the world one life at a time, one act at a time, one day at a time...Change a life, and you begin to change the world.” Let us courageously pursue this path, and not neglect what is possible for us to accomplish at each generation!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

FAU Archaeologist Involved in Ancient Peru Discovery A-tisket, A-tasket. You can tell a lot from a basket. Especially if it comes from the ruins of an ancient civilization inhabited by humans nearly 15,000 years ago during the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene ages. An archaeologist from Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute is among a team of scientists who made a groundbreaking discovery in Huaca Prieta in coastal Peru – home to one of the earliest and largest pyramids in South America. Hundreds of thousands of artifacts, including intricate and elaborate hand-woven baskets excavated between 2007 and 2013 in Huaca Prieta, reveal that early humans in that region were a lot more advanced than originally thought and had very complex social networks. For decades, archaeologists exploring Peru have argued about the origins and emergence of complex society in Peru. Did it first happen in the highlands with groups who were dependent on agriculture or did it happen along the coast with groups who were dependent on seafood? Evidence from the site indicates a more rapid development of cultural complexity along the Pacific coast than previously thought as published in Science Advances. “The mounds of artifacts retrieved from Huaca Prieta include food remains, stone tools and other cultural features such as ornate baskets and textiles, which really raise questions about the pace of the development of early humans in that region and their level of knowledge and the technology they used to exploit resources from both the land and the sea,” said James M. Adovasio, Ph.D., D.Sc., co-author of the study and a world acclaimed archaeologist at FAU’s Harbor Branch, who is the foremost authority on ancient textiles and materials such as those used in basketry. Among the artifacts excavated are tools used to capture deep-sea fish-like herring. The variety of hooks they used indicate the diversity of fishing that took place at that time and almost certainly the use of boats that could withstand rough waters. These ancient peoples managed to develop a very efficient means of extracting seaside resources and devised complex techniques to collect those resources. They also combined their exploitation of maritime economy with growing crops like chili pepper, squash, avocado and some form of a medicinal plant on land in a way that produced a large economic surplus. “These strings of events that we have uncovered demonstrate that these
people had a remarkable capacity to utilize different types of food resources, which led to a larger society size and everything that goes along with it such as the emergence of bureaucracy and highly organized religion,” said Adovasio. Advosasio’s focus of the excavation was on the extensive collection of basket remnants retrieved from the site, which were made from diverse materials including a local reed that is still used today by modern basket makers. Some of the utilitarian baskets discovered may date back as far as 11,000 years, while the more elaborate baskets made from domesticated cotton using some of the oldest dyes known in the New World are approximately 4,000 years old. “To make these complicated textiles and baskets indicates that there was a standardized or organized manufacturing process in place and that all of these artifacts were much fancier than they needed to be for that time period,” said Adovasio. “Like so many of the materials that were excavated, even the baskets reflect a level of complexity that signals a more sophisticated society as well as the desire for and a means for showing social stature. All of these things together tell us that these early humans were engaged in very complicated social relationships with each other and that these fancy objects all bespeak that kind of social messaging.” The late archaeologist Junius B. Bird was the first to excavate Huaca Prieta in the late 1940s after World War II and his original collection is housed in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. This latest excavation is only the second one to take place at this site, but this time using state-of-the-art archaeological technology. This recent excavation took approximately six years to complete and included a total of 32 excavation units and trenches, 32 test pits, and 80 geological cores that were placed on, around and between the Huaca Prieta and Paredones mounds as well as other sites. These artifacts are now housed in a museum in Lima, Peru. Leading the team of scientists is Tom D. Dillehay, Ph.D., principal investigator and an anthropologist from Vanderbilt University. The final report of this excavation will be published in a book by the University of Texas Press later this summer. Adovasio and Dillehay plan to go back to Peru within a year to further examine some of the, as yet, still unstudied basket specimens, especially the very earliest ones which are among the oldest in the New World.
11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Boca Raton Home for Sale BOCA RATON - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away
altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help homesellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your FREE copy of this report call toll-free 1800-603-2393 and enter 1003. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

sports FAU’s Postseason Run Comes to an End
By: Michael Demyan The Florida Atlantic University baseball team has put on their cleats for the final time this season. The Owls lost to Rice 13-2 Saturday morning, eliminating them from the Conference USA Baseball Championship. Two days later, the team then found out that they were not selected to appear in the NCAA Tournament. Rice got off to a quick offensive start to Saturday’s game at MGM Park in Mississippi. After shortstop Ford Proctor doubled with one out in the first, Dane Myers followed with a two-run homer to left field. FAU starting pitcher Cameron Ragsdale worked through a fairly painless second and retired the first two batters in the third before hitting Dominic DiCaprio with a pitch. That allowed Tristan Gray to come to the plate and hit a tworun home run to right, extending their lead to 4-0. With Ragsdale out of the game, Rice brought 11 batters to the plate in the fourth thanks to five hits and multiple defensive blunders from the Owls. The result was six runs, with four being unearned and FAU was left trailing 10-0. Stephen Kerr tried to breath some life into the Owls’ offense with a solo home run to lead off the bottom half of the inning. Tyler Frank and David Miranda followed with back-to-back
singles to put runners on the corners with no outs, but a double play and lineout ended the run. Unfortunately for FAU, Rice had not finished scoring, as they added on three more runs in the fifth to bring the score to 13-1. FAU relief pitchers Sean Labsan and Nick Prather each had a perfect inning and Kerr hit his second home run of the game, but Rice (30-29) went on to clinch the game in seven innings due to the mercy rule. “We just ran into a buzzsaw,” Head Coach John McCormack said. “Rice has really been playing well down the stretch. We didn’t pitch great but I didn’t think we pitched terrible. I was talking to the home plate umpire and he said our guys made some good pitches, they’re just on a roll. You see that in these tournaments.” The loss marked the end of the road for the Owls this season, who finished with a 35-21-1 record. After losing five of six earlier in the month, they were able to take the victory in three of their last four regular season games, but it just was not enough for them to be selected for this year’s NCAA Tournament. It will be the first time they do not appear since 2014. Now the returning players and Coach McCormack will be looking to build on their accomplishments from this season to come back for a better and stronger 2018.

Lynn University Signs Golfer, Jorge Villar Fresh off a runner-up performance at the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championship, head coach Andrew Danna and Lynn University's high-powered men's golf program has already taken steps for the future with the signing of Top-100 junior golfer, Jorge Villar. "If I could describe Jorge in a couple words, I would say he is a tough, gritty, and competitive young man," Danna said. "He also has tremendous work ethic. He embodies all the attributes that make our program what it is today. Jorge will help us continue the tradition we have instilled in our program for so many years. I feel he could make an immediate impact in our lineup if he continues with the same work ethic he's had these past couple years. I am honored and excited to be able to welcome this young man into our program."
Villar, hailing from Puebla, Mexico, will head to Boca Raton this upcoming fall as a freshman. He will join a strong, young Fighting Knight squad that saw Felix Kvarnstrom bring home Division II Freshman of the Year honors while fellow newcomer Toto Gana played on the biggest of stages at The Masters. Villar is currently the 79th-ranked player by the American Junior Golf Association and wrapped up the 2015-16 season as the No. 5-ranked junior golfer in Mexico. No stranger to big tournaments, Villar has posted eight top-25 finishes in 10 junior events over the past year, including two runner-up performances and four top-5 placings. At the Sergio Garcia Foundation Junior Championship in May, Villar grabbed silver after forcing a playoff with the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, Joaquin Niemann.
Lynn Men’s Tennis Jumps up to No. 6; Produces Three ITA All-Americans Mehdi Laalej, Jean-Baptiste Mateo and Florian Clemares of Lynn University's men's tennis team have been selected as 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Americans, as announced with the final national rankings of the season this week. Laalej garners All-America honors in both singles and doubles, while Mateo bolsters the accolade in singles with Clemares joining Laalej in doubles. ITA All-Americans are determined by the final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis National Rankings. For singles, the studentathlete must finish in the top 20 while doubles pairs must have a top-10 rank at the completion of the season. Lynn's men's tennis program boasts three players with All-America status for the first time since 2011. It is the first career AllAmerica honor for each of the 2017 trio. Laalej had a breakout year in his third season with the Fighting Knights, sweeping All-America plaudits. The Meknes, Morocco product posted an 18-5 singles record on the year – 17-5 at the No. 1 position – and rounds out the season ranked No. 6 in the nation. Clemares and Laalej first teamed up in doubles five matches into the season, originally playing at the No. 2 spot before taking over as Lynn's top pair for the majority of the year. The duo finished with a 13-6 record, notching nine wins at the top flight, and went

3-2 vs. nationally-ranked opponents. Mateo pieced together one of the best singles campaigns in program history, boasting a perfect 23-0 record. He is the only Fighting Knight since Lynn joined the NCAA in 1997 to produce 23 singles wins in a season. The junior out of Marseilles, France secured 20 of his victories at the No. 2 position with three at the top flight while winning all seven matchups against nationally-ranked opponents. He claims All-America status as the 11th-ranked player in the country. Kay Bartmann finishes the year ranked No. 24 in singles, missing out on All-America stature by four spots. The junior transfer from Drury University posted a 15-6 singles record in his first year in the Blue and White, playing primarily at the No. 3 position. Lynn was one win away from an appearance at the NCAA National Championships, falling to eventual national champions West Florida in the South Regional final. The Fighting Knights jump up three spots to finish as the sixth-ranked team in the country. West Florida claims the top spot, followed by Barry, Columbus State, Hawaii Pacific and Valdosta State rounding out the top five. Regionally, Lynn finishes as the No. 4 team in the South Region. Laalej (4), Mateo (6) and Bartmann (13) are highlighted in the regional singles ranks with Laalej and Clemares tabbed No. 4 in doubles.

Boca Raton FC win second successive NPSL away match Boca Raton FC defeated Naples United FC 3-1 tonight at Golden Gate High School in Naples, Florida. Shadi Harb had a brace and Giovani DiMauro added a third to pace Boca Raton. It was the second successive win for Boca Raton in NPSL play, both victories coming away from home. After the home team started quickly with two early chances, Boca Raton gradually assumed control of the match in the middle of the first half. Head Coach Athirson made a tactical change shifting Justin Wilbanks into midfield and moving Jason Fitzgerald to right back. The remainder of the half with Wilbanks serving as the focal point of Boca Raton’s play in central midfield, several chances were created with intricate passing and movement. The best chance of the half for Boca Raton to fell Wilbanks who put a shot on frame that was cleared off the goal line by Naples United’s Gilbert Fab. Despite the chances Boca Raton failed to register a goal in the first half, but early in the second half Wilbanks was taken down in the area and Harb scored his first goal calmly from the penalty spot. Boca Raton had a few chances to double
the lead but were unable to take advantage and Naples began applying pressure. Striker Juan Buzan was particularly active for Naples United who were pressing high up the pitch. Rafael Campos was able to convert a penalty from spot to equalize for Naples United about midway through the second half. It was the first goal of the NPSL campaign for Naples United. Following this goal, Naples high-press combined with Boca Raton high defensive line yielded a few more chances for the home side but goalkeeper Leo Tavares was up the task making two spectacular saves charging off the line as a sweeper keeper. Moments after Tavares second spectacular save Harb found himself space and fended off two Naples defenders and placed the ball past keeper Cristian Blanco to restore the Boca Raton lead. DiMauro made it three before full time when he was able to convert a oneon-one opportunity on a counter attack. With the victory Boca Raton remains six points off of the NPSL Sunshine Conference lead currently held by Miami United.
