Boca Raton Innovation Campus (BRiC) has announced the latest addition to campus with The Kroger Company. Kroger is the largest supermarket chain by revenue and the second-largest general retailer. Their Boca office – 35,000 square feet in BRiC's 4700 building – is a national headquarters supporting Kroger's digital businesses, including Vitacost.com, which the company acquired in 2017. The company moved to BRiC from across the street at 5400 Broken Sound Boulevard NW. "[BRiC's] rich history and compelling story as it relates to the digital focus of our Boca office is one of the several reasons we chose to move to campus," said Guy Burgstahler, Senior Director of Customer Experience for Kroger. "It is home to several South Florida businesses that collectively create a great atmosphere that we are proud to be part of." While the size of their office is roughly the same as the previous, their new space was designed to be more efficient.

While the size of their office is roughly the same as the previous, their new space was designed to be more ef-

ficient. The company's initial space was broken up into different offices as they grew. Now, the office is all in one contiguous space, split by break rooms and huddle spaces with flexible space options like standing desks and private phone booths. "One of BRiC's value propositions is the efficiency of our building. Our column-free, open floor plans allow businesses the flexibility to design workspaces that meet their needs," said Danielle Vennett, Vice President at Crocker Partners, who helped facilitate the lease. "Our first-class amenities and immediate access to I-95 and the TriRail help us check the boxes for progressive organizations like Kroger. We welcome their addition to campus in continuing to foster a community of innovation." Mitchell Millowitz of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank represented Kroger while Vennett and CBRE's Jeff Kelley represented the landlord. Kroger's Boca headquarters are located at 4700 Exchange Court, Suite 200.

FAU High School Student Back From Space, School That Is

Florida Atlantic University High School student Connor Cane, 15, recently was one of only four students to represent the United States and one of only 47 students from across the world to participate in the United Space School in Houston, Texas. The elite two-week program brought together the brightest international students between the ages of 15-19 at NASA’s Manned Space Flight Center at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. “It was such a unique experience that I was fortunate enough to be selected for,” said Cane. “I got to collaborate with people from all over the world – I made a lot of friendships.” The program involved planning a mission to Mars with NASA scientists and engineers, in which students were assigned mission-specific teams based on their interests and interviews. Cane was a member of the green team, tasked with designing a habitat for the mission. “If I had to pick a standout moment from the experience it would be at the end when we were presenting

our habitat,” said Cane. “My team came together to form a really cool mission. All of our different cultures and experiences positively impacted our problem-solving skills and allowed us to work together as a unit.” Cane will begin his sophomore year at FAU High this week, continuing his involvement in The Cane Institute for Advanced Technologies. The Cane Institute serves as the epicenter for research, education and technology transfer for A.D. Henderson University School and FAU High School. The Institute’s integrated approach to solving society's toughest problems engages the best and brightest students, faculty and resources to explore today's most complex challenges in arenas such as cybersecurity, autonomous vehicles, robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality, automation and artificial intelligence. The future is bright for Cane, who has a career interest in biomolecular engineering, with the ultimate goal of “helping people.” Heizer Media Group

Wealth Advisor Nancy Hite Joins Transmedia Group’s Talent Roster The Strategic Wealth Advisor Nancy Hite has retained TransMedia Group to publicize the three things she tells her clients they can do with money: "Spend It Now, Spend It Later or Spend It Never." "Our PR program will highlight what Hite has learned over many years she has been advising clients about suitable financial strategies for their future, for as she puts it, 'most people are afraid of running out of money before they run out of time,'" says TransMedia Group CEO Tom Madden. "Because she doesn't believe 'retirement' is a 21st Century Concept, Hite avoids the word as she feels it creates 'false' mental pictures." TransMedia said it will focus on how most people simply don't realize what they're spending daily, but must plan for the future, or as Hite likes to say, "They must have an umbrella ready for a rainy day." "Our program will show how she helps her clients take an honest look at their financial affairs and fine tune what they're spending now so they can enjoy the future they desire," said Catherine deHaan, Executive VP of PR, Marketing and Production.

"Longevity has increased dramatically to where it's not unusual to live into your 90's and beyond, which is why Hite's message is more relevant today," she added. "Our publicity will ask whether RETIREMENT is even a 21st Century word, for as Nancy points out, 'once people understand they'll have a longer life, and their money has to last them, they're realizing retirement may not fit into the modern financial world,'" said Madden, who in his late 70's vows he'll never retire. "Like Hite, I believe if you love what you do, you keep looking forward to Monday morning." Most of Hite's clients age 40 and over have worked as business professionals, medical professionals, or small to midsize business owners, and have investment portfolios, but are concerned about future income. Nancy says, "We help people look ahead when they barely have a chance to look up!" Nancy J. College Rating Places PBA Among Best Christian Colleges

Palm Beach Atlantic is ranked 50th among the Christian colleges comprising the recent release of ratings by the organization College Consensus. College Consensus takes a different approach to college rankings, combining data from the most reputable college ranking publishers with credible student reviews posted online. The Consensus uses established rankings such as U.S. News & World Report, The Wall Street Journal, and WalletHub to create the Publisher Rating. The Student Review Rating combines stats from Cappex, Niche, Unigo and more. Together, they add up to the Consensus Rating, one number to represent a comprehensive, aggregate ranking.

For the purpose of their ranking, College Consensus evaluated Christ-centered schools as defined by the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities. Read more about the College Consensus methodology on their About page. “Palm Beach Atlantic is carrying forward its historic focus on traditional, American Christianity into its 51st year and beyond,” said President William M. B. Fleming, Jr. “Our theme this year is the Power of Prayer, which focuses on Jesus’ teaching the disciples how to pray in Matthew 6:9-13. Prayer unites us as a community and provides a tool to extend our caring to others around the world.”

Beware: Dorian Recovery is Fertile Ground for Fraud, Scammers As Americans, our first impulse when disasters strike is to open our wallets, head to the store and volunteer our time. Now as Hurricane Dorian ravaged the Bahamas and continues its onslaught on the Carolinas, I am inundated with emails - as in past hurricanes - about efforts to pitch in and help the victims in the Bahamas. I am sure the Carolinas will soon be added to those lists. As I watched the live images of destruction and suffering emerging from the Bahamas, I also visualized an avalanche of well-intentioned giving – whether cash, food, clothing or rescue equipment – flowing into the island nation. I am sure, in comparison, it will rise to the level of or even higher than the floodwaters. I have been involved in disaster reporting, preparation or recovery over the past 30-plus years, whether as a news reporter, a member of the armed forces or as a member of the civic organization, Rotary International. I caution you, if the past is

prologue, and it always is, con artists or scammers will be coming out of the woodwork to cash in on the impulse of people who want to help in the wake of a disaster. Bear in mind that as natural disasters bring out the best in people, they also bring out the worst. History will show that without proper planning or research, your goodwill can turn sour. Be leery of posts from individuals claiming to raise relief funds, collection kettles for hurricane victims at local stores and crowdfunding websites. While they may be legitimate, such efforts may risk lives, complicate access by professional efforts and potentially divert donations. Sad to say but far too often, such solicitations are fraudulent. Surprisingly to me, since many people get their news from Facebook these days, they will likely receive requests for donations or fundraisers such as crowdfunding campaigns. Again, I caution you, if the fundraiser is not associated with an established charity, reconsider donating.

Donating to experienced disaster relief organizations is your best bet to provide emergency help for those impacted by hurricanes. You can give through a handful of known charitable organizations, some of which have a Palm Beach County-area presence. Well-known and reputable organizations such as the Rotary International, Cox Media Group (CMG) Miami and the Grand Celebration Cruise Line (Bahamas Paradise) are assisting hurricane victims in the Bahamas. Local Rotarians are collecting supplies to send to their counterparts to be distributed in the areas impacted. There are five Rotary clubs on Grand Bahama island, which is part of Rotary District 6990. Rotary International’s foundation has a Donor Advised Fund account for District 7680 disaster relief #574 where donors can specify where the monies are spent by island or country or Rotary District. Each Rotary District has its own fund, which the Rotarians will use at their discretion.

The Foundation also has a Disaster Fund, which will provide disaster grants up to $25,000. Donors, however, cannot designate where their donation will be spent. For more information on the Rotary International’s efforts, visit https://rotary6990.org/bahamas-hurricane-dorianrelief/. Broward County-based radio station, WHQT Hot 105.1 FM, which is heard in Palm Beach, Broward, Miami Dade and the Bahamas, had partnered with Winn-Dixie supermarkets in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties to collect donations. And the Deerfield Beach-based Bahamas Paradise cruise is accepting monetary donations online through its partner, Mission Resolve, and donated supplies at its Riviera Beach warehouse. The cruise line also sent a ship filled with food, water and other supplies, as well as volunteers and first responders to Freeport and will bring evacuees to Florida, the company said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

POSITIVE LIVING By Robert J. Tamasy

The Business of Brokenness What do you typically do with something that gets broken, like a smartphone, a watch, a pen, or even a car? Try getting it repaired? Dispose of it? Or find a suitable replacement? Such responses are common, but recently I was reading about a better way of repairing cherished possessions that can actually make them more valuable. Have you heard about “Kintsugi”? Also called Kintsukuroi, it means “golden repair.” It’s a centuries-old Japanese art for restoring broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with precious metal, such as gold, silver or platinum. This process is rooted in a philosophy that regards breakage and repair as part of the valued object’s history, rather than something to be disguised or forgotten. In effect, this amounts to a celebration of the brokenness. This caused me to think about the episodes of brokenness we experience

September 6 - September 12, 2019

throughout the course of this journey we call life. No matter how much we try to avoid it, failure figures as prominently in our careers as does success: Job interviews for promising jobs don’t work out. Much-anticipated promotions don’t come. Well-conceived business ventures don’t succeed. Sales contracts are not finalized. Entrepreneurs have to file for bankruptcy, sometimes more than once, when risks are not rewarded. What if, instead of trying to ignore or conceal such failures and broken times, we gave them the Kintsugi treatment, seeing negative experiences as opportunities for growth, to persevere until we achieve success? Brokenness can serve valuable purposes in our personal lives as well. In fact, the Bible teaches that God uses it to build us into the men and women He desires for us to become. Psalm 51:17 says, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;

a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.” Why is this? Let’s look at some other Scripture passages to find an answer: Brokenness develops necessary humility. Success has the tendency to make us feel puffed up, filled with pride and thinking more highly of ourselves than we should. “For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: ‘I dwell in a high and holy place, and with the oppressed and humble of spirit, to restore the spirit of the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite’” (Isaiah 57:15). Brokenness gets our hearts back on the right course. Sometimes our outward actions seem right, but deep down we realize they are based on the wrong motives. Being broken can cause us to reexamine not only what we do, but also why we are doing it. “Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices

www.bocaratontribune.com

as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams” (1 Samuel 15:22). Brokenness can turn our eyes back to God. When things are going well for us, both professionally and personally, we can become tempted to forget our reliance on God. “So rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in loving devotion” (Joel 2:13). Brokenness helps us learn to be dependent. The business and professional world often promotes an attitude of, “I can do this all by myself.” Experiencing brokenness can bring us to the end of our trust in self-sufficiency. Jesus declared, declared, “I am the vine, you are the branches…apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

Trusting in God’s Direction, No Matter What

Business Networking Black Tie Gala Just before Dorian visited us, I attended the RankHi Networking Black Tie Gala in Fort Lauderdale at the PBA Banquet Center

When Larry was CEO of an information systems company, someone filed an unwarranted lawsuit against the company. Along the way, even though Larry’s company was innocent of any wrongdoing, many people urged him to settle the lawsuit. The cost of mounting a defense, even if unjustified, as well as the time defending the case would require, made an out of court settlement the most reasonable course of action, they contended. Rather than conceding to those recommendations, Larry prayed for wisdom and direction. As he did that, God impressed upon Larry that rather than settling, he should defend the company because it was innocent. The prolonged legal process did cost millions of dollars in legal fees, but the company was ultimately vindicated and cleared of the wrongful claims. In the meantime, God blessed and prospered the business so much that the legal fees became insignificant in size. Reflecting back on that troublesome and stressful time, Larry concluded that the fact his company had thrived in the midst of great adversity was a reflection of God’s favor for obedience. Repeatedly in the Scriptures we read that we should seek God-inspired counsel when confronted with difficult decisions. For instance, Proverbs 15:22 states, “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” However, that does not guarantee that all the advice we receive is necessarily correct. We need to consult the Lord directly, and when He leads us in ways contrary to the counsel we have received, we still must do as He instructs.

www.bocaratontribune.com

Close, trusted friends are an asset, without question. But they can never replace and should not supplant the counsel of the One we should trust the most. Jesus spoke to His followers and admonished them about the importance of remaining close to Him: If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you” John 15:7). The Bible often underscores the importance of having complete trust in God: Trust even when we don’t understand. Sometimes God calls us to act in counterintuitive ways, as Larry did in rejecting the recommendation to settle the unwarranted suit. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight”(Proverbs 3:5-6). Trust even when we fear disaster. Emotions may cause us to seek the fastest, seemingly easiest solutions to pressing problems. However, belief that God has our best interests at heart should encourage us to look to Him, rather than at our circumstances. “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11). Trust even when God’s way doesn’t seem practical. If God is leading you to take a stand, trust in Him, even when others disagree. “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun” (Psalm 37:45).

Florida Bands Together to Aid in Hurricane Dorian Relief Efforts By: Christina Hristofordis

Although Florida was quite fortunate in dodging the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Dorian, one of the most powerful storms the U.S. has recorded in a while, our Bahamian neighbors faced a different fate. Hurricane Dorian ravaged the Bahamas at Category 5 speeds when it made landfall on Sunday afternoon and remained there until it began its move northwest on Tuesday. Buildings can be seen in shambles, cars crushed, and vegetation stripped. Bahamians even required boats to get around the island due to the severe flooding in the streets. Dorian immensely impacted the Bahamas, leaving at least thirty individuals officially reported dead and homes and businesses completely demolished. The Bahamas is an important place to many Floridians, “I have always loved my time in the Bahamas, it is truly a beautiful place with extraordinary people and it is devastating to see them struggling after Dorian,” said, Vitoria Queiroz, a Florida resident, and frequent traveler. As a result, Florida residents and agencies are banding together to provide the Bahamas with some disaster relief in any way that they can. Monetary donations are extremely helpful in disaster relief however, individuals are urged to do their research and ensure their donations are going to a reputable organization. In times like these, it is possible for the number of scams and frauds to increase and surface the web by asking for

relief donations. Anne Marie Van Casteren, PR Specialist for the City of Boca Raton, addressed this issue of skepticism, “We know during disasters such as these, people are very skeptical about what organization to donate or provide items to.” The Walt Disney Company has also demonstrated their support towards the relief efforts through donating $1 million in aid to the Bahamas. The donation was led by Disney Cruise Line and Jeff Vahle, president of Disney Cruise Line. The Bahamas has been a popular port for the cruise line and Vahle hopes the $1 million will aid in the restoration of the Island and its people. Along with monetary donations, a huge portion of the relief efforts has focused on item and supply donations for the Bahamian people. A basic list of items that can be donated include: nonperishable goods, baby supplies, bedding, drinking water, cleaning supplies, medical supplies, and other necessities. The following is a list of various places in Palm Beach County that are collecting donations: - Ashely Sica Fitness: 7400 N Federal HWY Unit A4 Boca Raton, FL 33487 - Nomad Surf Shop: 4655 N. FAU Professor's Book Makes Oprah’s List Of Books To Read Associate Professor of English Ayse Papatya Bucak’s latest book “The Trojan War Museum, and Other Stories” was listed in Oprah Magazine’s “10 August Books You Should Read Right Now” list for August 2019. Bucak’s collection includes 10 stories that explore the author’s Turkish roots. “The History of Girls,” centers around a group of girls trapped in the rubble of a school explosion who are visited by the ghosts of their dead classmates, “A Cautionary Tale” is the story of a Turkish wrestler, and “The Dead” is about a sponge magnate’s encounter with a survivor of the Armenian genocide. Publishers Weekly commented “The author astutely deploys a range of styles and techniques that create a cerebral, multifarious collection. Bucak’s remarkable, inventive and humane debut marks her as a writer to watch.” Bucak has published prose

and poetry in a variety of magazines, including The Kenyon Review, Creative Nonfiction, Prairie Schooner, Pank, and The Fairy Tale Review. Her short fiction has been awarded the O.Henry and Pushcart Prizes, and she has held residencies at the Millay Colony for the Arts, Hedgebrook Farm, Willapa Bay AIR, Brush Creek, the Betsy Hotel, and the Studios of Key West. She is a contributing editor for the journal Copper Nickel . Bucak is the subject of the first In Conversation podcast produced by the College of Arts and Letters, which will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2019. Dean Michael Horswell, Ph.D., talks to Bucak about her new book and about how growing up in the United States with Turkish heritage has inspired her to write stories with elements from Turkey’s culture and history, but from her American point of view.

SPORTS Boca Raton FC Announces Youth Academy Program

Boca Raton Football Club is delighted to announce the creation of the Boca Raton FC Youth Academy Program. The Boca Raton Youth Academy will focus on following players through the early stages of their careers by being able to focus on building a strong foundation and creating a clear pathway from a young age to the Boca Raton FC first team. We want our Youth Academy players to love their club and we want that this love will grow and help Boca Raton FC become a big, healthy family. Different than rec soccer, the Boca Raton FC Youth Academy is a selective program designed specifically for the players born between 2010 and 2015 who are interested in being developed and prepared for the next level as they grow in the soccer career. At the Boca Raton FC Youth Academy, we meet the individual developmental needs of a player who desires a greater challenge outside of the rec soccer programs. This unique developmental

Former Lynn Basketball Star Signs with Dominican Republic’s Reales de la Vega

program will transition a child from being just another rec player to becoming a select player. Our goal is to create a different type of soccer model, one in which families, coaches, and players all have the same goal: Build great players and great citizens. We will not just be another club with competitive leagues with a stressful and expensive agenda of tournaments that at the end only gives the winners a medal and a trophy. Our goal is to make our players get the big final prize of becoming a good person and player. Our dream for the Boca Raton FC Youth Academy is to see our players be awarded college scholarships, and/or professional contracts. Youth Academy players are guaranteed to receive age-appropriate instruction from licensed coaches during all training and game day sessions. For more information on the Boca Raton FC Youth Academy, please visit us online at www.bocaratonfc. com/youth.

Following an outstanding senior season, Lynn University men's basketball alumni Michael Baez has officially signed to play professional basketball in the Dominican Republic. Baez was a first round selection, sixth overall, of Reales de la Vega, whom were League Champions in 2018. Located in La Vega province in the Dominican Republic, Reales competes in the top division of Dominican professional basketball, Liga Nacional de Baloncesto (LNB). Lynn Men’s Soccer Routs Florida Memorial 6-1 BOCA RATON, Fla. – Offense was a priority this offseason for Lynn University's 12th-ranked men's soccer team and the results were impressive in a season-opening 6-1 victory over Florida Memorial on Thursday night. Newcomer Alexandre Horveno netted three assists while fellow newbie Levin Sandmann added a goal and an assist. Patience is the name of the game and the Blue and White had plenty of it as Florida Memorial used the first nine minutes and change to sit back and let the Fighting Knights come to them. Lynn’s patience paid off in the 10th minute when Horveno notched the first of his three assists on a goal to Lukas Ostermann off a cross from the left corner. Four minutes later it was Lukas Hombach’s turn to find the back of the net, courtesy of Horveno. Hombach and Horveno played give and go on the outside and the left back paid it forward with a wonderful cross. Hombach one-timed his attempt to the left side netting for the 2-0 advantage.
