Community Boynton Beach High Students Train at FAU Simulation Center By: Gisele Galoustian Through an innovative community outreach program to support diverse and economically disadvantaged students pursuing careers in medicine, 40 sophomore students from Boynton Beach High School (BBHS) had the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a physician for the day as they learned first-hand how to respond to medical emergency scenarios using stateof-the-art simulation technology. The high school students were mentored by medical students in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University. This program is a new affiliation between FAU’s College of Medicine and Boynton Beach High School Medical Sciences Academy. The program is providing approximately 110 students from BBHS with in-classroom teaching sessions led by FAU’s medical students and includes anatomy lab instruction, medical simulation technology experience, special campus tours, as well as admissions and financial aid workshops. The medical simulation activity enabled these students to take the content they have learned in the classroom and put it into

practice at school and at home, and during their clinical rotations in approved medical facilities. The students were mentored through various medical emergency scenarios at the simulation center such as a diabetes case, a hypertension/ stroke case and cardiac arrest case, working with hightech, life-like mannequins. They had the opportunity to perform CPR, examine the mannequins, listen to their heart rate, check their blood pressure, and learn about key signs and symptoms of a heart attack, stroke and diabetes. The information they gleaned during the practice sessions provided takeaway messages that they will be able to share with

family and friends, and during their clinical rotations in approved medical facilities. Mannequins at the simulation center display actual physiological signs and symptoms of human patients affected by medical or trauma events. They breathe, blink, and bleed; have variable blood pressure and heart rates that replicate the human response to medical scenarios, and can react to treatment, including drugs and ventilation therapy. If incorrect drugs or dosages are administered, the mannequin will respond exactly as a human patient. FAU’s Medical Simulation Center has developed more than 100 medical emergency scenarios

to train nurses, physicians, emergency first responders, medical students, and medical residents. The eight rooms in FAU’s Medical Simulation Center have been designed to look and operate just like an emergency room in a hospital, and are equipped with gurneys, monitors, IV poles, defibrillators, blood pressure cuffs, simulated oxygen ports, and all of the equipment and supplies required to respond to medical emergencies. The new affiliation between FAU and Boynton Beach High School Medical Sciences Academy was made possible by a $20,000 grant from the Education Foundation of Palm Beach County. In addition, FAU’s College of Medicine recently received a generous $300,000 grant from the Quantum Foundation for the HCOP program. Schools with biomedical sciences academies that benefited from the HCOP program include Lake Worth Middle, Roosevelt Middle, Lake Worth High, and Palm Beach Gardens High. This grant allows FAU’s College of Medicine to serve an additional 700+ students in Palm Beach County with its HCOP program, including new medical academy affiliations.

Building Community, Police Trust is a Two-Way Street In the last couple of days, I have been peppered with questions from many, including close friends, elected leaders and cohorts in the media on my take on the continuous police related shootings – particularly those of black men. Until we acknowledge that an issue exists, take actions to educate everyone and genuinely address the issue, I see this as a reality we will continue to experience considering the political climate in which we now live. After each shooting, instead of playing Monday morning quarterback, I try to steer the conversation from that incident to the broader issue: how to forge meaningful relationships between the police and the community to prevent another senseless killing. There is a lot of anger, fear and distrust between the community and law enforcement. So, the only way to address this issue is to foster a relationship where the larger society feel safe and protected and law enforcement personnel do not feel hesitant to do their job of protecting and serving the residents. In serving their communities, it is important that law enforcement officers get out and get involved in community activities.

Rebuilding that trust can be difficult, but it is not impossible because the residents in south Palm Beach County enjoy a fairly good relationship with their law enforcement personnel. The Boca Raton and Delray Beach police as well as the Sheriff ’s Office do an outstanding job infusing themselves in the daily activities of the community. It is not unusual to find a police officer in athletic gear challenging local youths in a game of basketball, football or softball. Just recently, police officers in Delray Beach partnered with a few groups and with the help of local volunteers distributed 150,000 pounds of canned goods, fresh produce, freshly laid eggs, chicken, bread and other items to more than 600 people at a giveaway. Still, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. It took years of hard work, particularly from beat officers, for these relationships to reach their current levels. And it will take hard work to maintain it. To build, bolster and sustain respect, trust and legitimacy, there are several things police departments ¬¬¬¬need to do. First and foremost, there needs to be

transparency in the agency. The community needs to know what the policies and procedures are of their law enforcement agency, and if they are not followed, the violations will be addressed in a fair and unbiased manner. It is equally important that the diversity of the community they serve is reflected in the makeup of the department. It is also important that law enforcement agencies work with bridge-building organizations and leaders in their communities. In every community there are key groups of people who have their ears to the ground as well as the trust of the community. Find these organizations and people to partner with. For example, the chief of police in Delray Beach or other members of his executive staff meets regularly with the Elders, a group of senior men, at a local restaurant or with another group of men at Dunkin Donuts. When people see interactions like that it diffuses the fear many harbor for the “guys and gals” in blue. It also would be advantageous to include all voices in the community, especially the youth and those who feel marginalized or excluded.

The disconnect between law enforcement and the community is particularly wide between police and young people, especially youth of color. Police are not the only ones who need to take responsibility for building and maintaining a positive relationship with the people they serve. Communities should also be taking active steps to ensure that trust is being built, and engage with law enforcement officials in positive ways. Parents should teach their children that the police are not the bad guys but are there to protect their civil rights and civil liberties. They also must explain that at times, the police in doing their jobs, may do what can be considered as detrimental to the community – especially when residents are breaking the law. Offenders have to be arrested to protect those not involved. However, the method in which the police carry out the law can either enhance the trust process or degrade it, so it is a twoway street. Trust on both sides is not given, it has to be earned.

Leaders are Necessary in Every Field! Although I have never been a leadership guru, nor ever desire or plan to be one, through the years I’ve been examining the theories of several legitimate experts on the subject. I also have closely observed the practices of several who wished to be viewed as leaders, which only some legitimately could be! Leadership is necessary in every sector of human endeavors. Leaders are the human instruments necessary to provide direction to a cause, or to an enterprise, if these are to move ahead, make a significant contribution, and leave a valuable legacy behind, having achieved its purpose!

A leader, as such, leads through motivation, by example, with encouragement, and in providing to followers healthy strategies which enable and ensure them in reaching the desired goals. It must be a capable, reliable individual who is unafraid to be visible, and be noticed always en route to where the followers need to proceed in the direction leading to ultimate success! That’s why the physical image of a leader is someone consistently on the go, moving decisively forward, with one or more advancing right behind, all proceeding in the same direction! If no one is following, that person is not

leading; such individual may have the title, may be viewed by some as such, but leadership is far more than a mere designation applied to someone; it’s a major task with a definite destination and a set time frame! Some leaders may be just appointed to that role, based on demonstrated knowledge, abilities, and past results; others may choose that position for themselves, being able to convince key persons of their expertise and capacity to accomplish what that role entails and demands. True leadership should never originate merely through preferential treatment

of a friend or relative; it should not necessarily be a hereditary position, much less a mere prize for certain favors provided on behalf of anyone powerful enough to make that appointment. The ability of getting along with others, of handling finances wisely, of making difficult decisions with utmost caution and demonstrated wisdom, besides clear directives to all followers, are among the most essential pre-requisites for effective leadership at any level, in any field of human endeavor. Ultimately, a leader must know where he is going and cautiously remain on course to arrive at the proposed destination!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Feen on the Scene By Diane Feen

Food For The Soul – Highwaymen Art Exhibit At Fau South Florida was never known as a Mecca for the cultural arts. But in the 50’s and 60’s there was a prolific group of artists creating lush landscape paintings of Florida in its most natural state. Known as Florida Highwaymen, these artists were African Americans who escaped poverty (and the drudgery of laboring in the citrus groves) by painting what they knew best – The Florida landscape. When they first started painting, the 25 men (and one woman) sold their paintings on the side of the road for as little as $10. But things are different today - Highwaymen art is in big demand and the art form - and the artists are part hero part Florida folklore. That’s why FAU recently held a regal reception and gallery talk at their Ritter Art Gallery. It was so calm, cool and collected it had a Hampton’s vibe to it. Highwaymen artist James Gibson was there as well as Highwaymen artist Alfred Hair’s widow (and painter) Doretha Hair Truesdell. After a balmy evening outdoor reception – that heralded finger food and wine – the group went inside the gallery to view the art and hear about its historical reference. “Life in Florida is like a film being projected at double speed. You have to stretch your memory to see the change. But the nostalgia serves a good purpose, it gives you a moment to readjust your emotion,” said FAU humanities scholar Dr. Evan Bennett. Bennett said we play the “Do you remember Game” in South Florida because it allows us to make sense of the tremendous change in our midst. Though he did say that it is a jarring change (no kidding – the parking alone), he also said viewing these paintings of mid-century Florida landscape connects us to a time of purity and simplicity.

For those of us who lived in Boca Raton when FAU consisted of a few tennis courts, baron land and effortless parking, the event was reminiscent of the good old days. The paintings were also a reminder of South Florida’s innocence with mystical moonlit nights, swaying palm trees, lustful sunsets and ominous rain clouds. And, the crowd seemed more cerebral than those at Blue Martini. Highwayman artist James Gibson meandered around unnoticed and Doretha Hair Truesdell was there as well. Hair Truesdell talks about how the artists made frames from discarded door and window moldings and how they painted on upson board (recycled wood) because it was cheaper than canvas. The exhibition - called “A.E. Backus and Florida’s Highwaymen: History, Commerce and Art” – was also dedicated to artist Backus, who was a palette pleaser of South Florida’s natural beauty. Backus was also a mentor and art teacher for many Highwaymen artists. We were reminded that the 50’s and 60’s was a time of racial inequality for black people in South Florida. Yet being an artist in those days was an escape from the drudgery that often plagued them in the South. Perhaps that’s why the paintings from these brave men (and women) were full of color and illumination – artistic reality and ethereal emotion. The paintings sold well on the road back then – albeit for about $25 – but are now coveted as artistic prose of Florida’s pastoral history. If you missed the opening, don’t despair, it goes until Nov. 19 at the Ritter Art Gallery on the FAU Boca campus. There will also be a host of panel discussions about the Highwaymen art, artists and culture until November. Call 561- 297-2661 or go to www.fau.edu/galleries.

“Shakespeare In Hollywood” at Boca Raton Community High School: Helen Hayes award for ‘Best Play

The award-winning Boca Raton Community High School Drama Department presents the hilarious no-holdsbarred comedy on October 27-29, 2016. Be transported to the magical and wonderful world of 1933 on the set of Max Reinhardt’s A Midsummer Nights Dream! Take the glitz and glamour of 1930s Hollywood, populated by real-life, yet delightfully exaggerated, personalities of the movie scene, add a sophisticated German director with an artistic vision, a couple of misplaced supernatural beings, and one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies of all time, and you get Ken Ludwig’s Shakespeare in Hollywood. Max Reinhardt’s problematic 1934 production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” — sure to be box office poison — is further complicated when Oberon and Puck, fresh from A Wood Outside Athens, find themselves transported from the land of legend and classical myth all the way to Hollywood, in the middle of a suspiciously familiar story. Oberon may be the all-powerful King of the Fairies — but he has never dealt with ambitious starlets, prying gossip columnists, or the odious Will Hays, the all-powerful King of Censorship. And Puck may be an old hand at jolly mischief, but he has encountered nothing like the cool sunglasses and

hot beauties of Hollywood! When the enchantment of the silver screen meets the magic of Fairyland, all merry hell breaks loose, and we are treated to transformations, chase scenes, and the kind of havoc that only that certain love-juice can wreak. Winner of the Helen Hayes award for ‘Best New Play’ and hailed by The Wall Street Journal as ‘deliciously inventive,’ Shakespeare in Hollywood is a supernatural screwball romp, full of entertainment and even a little bit of education. There are only four performances October 27-29, 2016 at 7 pm; also Saturday, October 29th at 2 pm. This is a show not to be missed! sports Strikers Fall 2-0 in New York

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers dropped a hard fought match 2-0 to the first place New York Cosmos at James Shuart Stadium. The Strikers have now lost three straight matches but sit just four points outside the fourth and final NASL postseason spot. Fort Lauderdale sported pink kits for the match as part of the #DrivePink campaign In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The Strikers have partnered with AutoNation and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in the #DrivePink program. Fort Lauderdale had an opportunity to open the scoring within minutes when Victor Pineda found himself in a pocket of space unmarked in the New York area. Pineda looped his header over the crossbar. In Minute 11, Geison was in on goal one on one with Cosmos keeper Jimmy Maurer but shot wide of the net from a tight angle. The Strikers continued to apply pressure as Cross from Geison was punched away by Maurer at the last second in minute 36 and in first half stoppage time an exciting attacking move that began with Julius James

October 7 - October 13 , 2016

playing a long ball to Pineda ended with Paulo Jr. missing the target from inside 10 yards away. The second half saw Fort Lauderdale create one good early chance, when Amauri was in one-on-one with Maurer but put his shot wide of the near post in minute 49. From that point forward the chances began falling to the Cosmos. Ruben Bover spectacularly finished a slick attack move from the Cosmos in minute 57. From that point forward New York controlled the action and limited Fort Lauderdale’s forays forward. Some excellent last-ditch defending from the Strikers back four prevented the Cosmos from doubling their lead until minute 86 when Andres Flores took a Lucky Mkosana cross and slotted it home to seal the victory for New York. Despite the loss, Fort Lauderdale still remains in contention for the postseason. The Strikers travel to Cary, NC to take on the Carolina RailHawks on October 8, before beginning a three-game homestand on October 12 against FC Edmonton.
