Boca Helping Hands Distributes Turkey Before the sun rises on Sunday morning, the team at Boca Helping Hands will be hard at work…loading pallets with frozen turkeys and boxes of dry goods. This Sunday, November 20th is the annual Boca Helping Hands Thanksgiving Box Brigade.

Over 1,500 families will receive the boxes which have been gathering in the BHH warehouse for the last week.

Local families, schools, and businesses picked up the boxes and menus from BHH staff and have been filling them up throughout November. The turkeys were graciously donated by a local philanthropist who chooses to remain anonymous, but who generosity touches so many lives.

FAU Honors Art2Music Awards Recipients By: Polly Burks

Florida Atlantic University recently announced the winners of its Art2Music Competition. In this collaboration, undergraduate artists in the Department of Visual Arts and Art History were invited to submit a piece of art in any medium. Art faculty chose the winning piece, and students in the Department of Music’s Commercial Music Program were then invited to compose music inspired by the winning piece. The winning artist is Sarah Rabinowitz and her piece is a sculpture titled, “How it Begins.” The winning composer is Luis Castillo.

“Visual images have always inspired composers,” said Michael Zager, FAU Dorothy F. Schmidt eminent scholar and director of the Commercial Music Program at FAU.

After initially pushing back the dates a week, crews now will close Spanish River Boulevard at Interstate 95 nightly on four nights, with one still to be determined.

The closures — which will be in effect on Spanish River from Broken Sound Boulevard to Airport Road from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11; Monday, Nov. 14; and Wednesday, Nov. 16 — are being done to allow crews to place beams as part of the new I-95 interchange at Spanish River.

Another night closure will be announced at a later date.

Community FAU Students Support Haiti with Relief Effort

FAU student and Haiti native Esther Loude began a Help for Haiti drive on campus.

For years, the development of the Wildflower property has been a hot issue in the City of Boca Raton, and last night its resident made their voices known as 43,565 residents voted on the referendum to keep city-owned waterfront property public.

The referendum passed with 66.91% (29,149) of the residents saying Yes, and 33.09% (14,416) saying No.

The adopted referendum will apply not only to the Wildflower property but all city-owned land adjacent to the Intracoastal Waterway.

The referendum was written as part of a citizens’ petition after Boca Raton City Council did not approve the proposal when it was brought to them in August.

“The Boca Raton question [is] perhaps the City’s most important grass root movement in decades,” said BocaWatch publisher Al Zucaro. “Residents have responded to the City Council’s desire to hear what the residents want.

Back in August, in a 4-1 vote, the Boca Raton City Council decided to postpone a decision that would have made the former Wildflower property labeled for only recreational use. Rather than make a decision, the council decided to give the voters the power by putting the decision on the November 8th ballot.

During the August meeting, Robert Weinroth said that the vote is the only way to get this decision resolved, “The reason that I think that this should go to a vote is because honestly, I don’t think that we know what the voters want, and I don’t think that this can continue until we do.” The other councilmen echoed this, leading the decision that sent the referendum to the November ballot.

“The task now is to begin working with the City Council, our elected officials, for the ‘interpretation and implementation’ of this ordinance consistent with the political will,” added Zucaro.

FAU student Esther Loude was devastated when she saw the videos and photos coming out of Haiti in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. The category 4 storm ravaged parts of the country, leaving hundreds dead, and tens of thousands more homeless. She knew she had to do something.

“I am from Haiti, and my dad’s hometown there was really affected by the hurricane,” she said.

Loude, a member of FAU’s American Medical Student Association (AMSA), gathered her friends and began a relief effort on campus, asking people to donate clothes, shoes, baby food and diapers. Adriana Bautista, president of AMSA, immediately jumped on board.

“As students, we are so wrapped up on grades, resumes and applications,” Bautista said. “It’s nice to take a step back and realize everything we do affects someone else and causes change.”

Donation bins were set up

around campus, and word of the drive quickly spread. When FAU Athletics heard about the effort, they quickly got involved and made it a friendly competition. A bin was set up in each of FAU’s athletic teams’ locker rooms to see which team could bring in the most pounds of canned goods.

“We have a lot of people on the team whose families were affected by this,” said Greg Joseph, a kicker on the FAU football team. “We care about our community and really try to rally together at a time like this.”

The Help for Haiti drive was such a success that an entire classroom in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science was filled with donations. Canned goods will be given to Food for the Poor, and other donations will go to the Haitian American Nurses Association to bring on a trip to Haiti later this month.

“It makes me feel good that I’m helping my people,” said Loude. “They are not going to go to bed hungry. I feel like I have a voice.”

Gwen Ifill: This Country Has Lost an Icon, a Dear Friend

My heart is heavy and my soul has been fractured.

Almost in unison my cell phone began buzzing Monday afternoon: “We lost Gwen,” read one text, another said, “Gwen Ifill has died” and the third bore the message: “RIP Gwen.”

Although I knew she was ill, the news hit me like a punch in the gut. My only response was “No Way!”

Not again. I am growing tired and weary, and yes, may I say sick of the number of my friends who are getting snuffed out by this plague called cancer.

In the last nine months alone, I have lost 12 friends to this disease.

But I promised not to dwell on Gwen’s death in this piece but on the life of this God-fearing woman, whom I found to be a true friend.

I first met Gwen in the mid1980s when she worked as a reporter for the Boston Herald. We quickly bonded, especially when she learned that I was in the military, was active in my church (her father was an AME minister), and that we both were young high-energy black journalists.

Like many young black journalists then, Gwen wanted that big break and

hers came in 1989, when she joined the staff at the Baltimore Evening Sun. She then went on to report for The Washington Post and The New York Times. She also got a gig working for NBC News.

I recall asking her, “What the heck you know about television reporting?” and in her sweet but direct way, she carefully reminded me that her major at Simmons College was communications “I beg your pardon.”

Although I was only pulling her legs, I understood her clearly, having gotten my journalism start in radio.

I recall an unrelated conversation with Gwen and another mutual friend who then hosted a radio show, wrote for a local newspaper, was a frequent contributor on a TV news program, all while teaching journalism. Gwen in her charming and informative manner said, “We are news reporters and we are versatile. As such, we deliver the news and it does not matter the format. That’s what we do.”

Her move from print came at a time when many of my print colleagues – at least in my newsroom then - were reluctant to embrace moving to broadcast platform. I, however, saw it as a brilliant opportunity to diversity my portfolio.

I jumped at the opportunity to again

dabble in radio and even television when the Sun-Sentinel offered me the opportunity to work in both markets.

With me in South Florida and Gwen in Washington, and since emails or texts were not vehicles for communicating back then, our contacts were limited to our annual pilgrimage to the National Association of Black Journalists convention, which is held in a different city each year, or our occasional phone calls. There were two calls I could always expect to get from Gwen on my birthday and Veterans Day. She would often say everyone’s birthday should be a special day and if you served in the armed forces for even one day, you deserved to be saluted.

I was so happy to learn in the late 1990s that she landed a gig on national TV when she made her transition into broadcast journalism, hosting PBS’ Washington Week in Review.

I put my friend in the ranks of David Brinkley, Walter Cronkite, John Chancellor and Dan Rather the last of a generation of legendary reporters who got their basic training at newspapers and wire services, then made their name in the new medium of television.

Whenever my scheduled permitted, I would watch her at the news desk

as co-host of PBS’s “NewsHour”. I admired how she calmly shared the world’s news while never losing her integrity. But again, Gwen was always more than just a reporter or an anchor. She was not about glitz and glamor. The model of character and integrity, she was someone we could trust to guide us through the most important issues of the day; a voice of certainty in an uncertain world. She was family. She invited us to believe in her, and she never let us down. In fact, she was by far, one of the most trusted reporters in today’s newsrooms.

I admired her tenacity and courage. She told me how as an intern at the Herald, a colleague left her a note saying, “Nigger go home.” But instead of buckling, she accepted the permanent job after the paper’s management offered it to her and she proved her true mettle.

She mentored several journalists and was a role model for young women journalists across the world.

I will always miss your heart-warming smile and your “Hello Home Slice.” Until we meet again, sleep on beloved, rest in peace.

Keep Yourself in Functioning Order!

Just like musical instruments need to be in tune for each recital they participate, every human must also be attuned to the challenges to be faced, and the tasks to be performed on a daily basis! Automobiles also are to have regular oil changes, the engine must be tuned-up at certain intervals, and their wheels need alignment for maximum, safe driving experiences each time the vehicle needs to be taken out somewhere!

The same applies to several other experiences in which we are involved in our regular, daily opera-

tion. Our best expectations require the proper care of the tools we expect to utilize in accomplishing several tasks expected of us!

Imperative as those procedures are with tools and machinery, far more significant is the importance we place on our own personal functioning as human beings in society. Others should receive the very best we can impart of our own selves, in every dimension of our personal operation.

People need to be at their best in order to deliver their best, whatever the project or contribution may

be. Certain excesses must be avoided in order to maintain our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health at peak levels.

Certain labors may require physical strength primarily, but this does not diminish the necessity of our mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being to be at their best levels as well. Am important reminder along these lines, was offered long ago by author Orison Swett Marden, in one of his books.

This is what he wrote: “No one can do his best work while he harbors revengeful or even unfriendly thoughts

toward others. Our faculties only give up their best when working in perfect harmony. There must be good-will in the heart or we can not do good work with head or hand.”

The ultimate challenge that cannot be ignored, is: Always feed your mind the right thoughts that will lead you into action, into realization, into genuine triumph. Cultivate healthy thoughts that can occupy spaces vacated by stale, negative, unproductive thinking!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution at Boca Helping Hands

“Boca Helping Hands is a bridge, helping our clients cross from basic human need to self-sufficiency,” says BHH Executive Director James Gavrilos. “We will always be there for

families in need, and this year we are thrilled that we had 300 fewer families register to receive turkeys and boxes. This means that 300 families are now able to provide for their basic human needs. For us, this is the greatest success.”

A festive dinner will also be served on Thanksgiving Thursday from 11:00 to 1:00, where guests will be treated to a traditional holiday meal. Volunteers will also deliver Thanksgiving Dinners to housebound shut-ins who live near Boca Helping Hands. In addition, over seven hundred holiday meals will also be distributed at a West Boca satellite location for those who have registered there. And in a special treat, those meals are being prepared, delivered and served the chefs and employees of the Boca Raton Resort and Club.

“Our collaboration with the Boca Raton Resort & Club is a model for all interaction between the corporate and non-profit worlds. Their commitment to those in the community who are in need is inspiring. This type of corporate responsibility is exactly what America needs during these trying times.” says Gavrilos.

Amy Adams Scores Again in “Nocturnal Animals”

This month’s speaker at the Tiger Bay Club’s luncheon at City Fish Market was Stanley Tate who was CEO and President of Resolution Trust Corporation until 1993. Mr. Tate has been Chairman of Advisory Board of KFX Inc. since 2003. He was instrumental in the implementation and design of the Florida Prepaid College program. A very dynamic speaker he also spoke about President Elect Trump whom he is quite friendly with and he had worked with Donald Trump’s Father, Fred in the construction business.

Amy Adams has really been on a roll recently. After playing a brainy linguist who saves the world in “Arrival,” she now shows her glamour side as a successful avant garde art gallery owner in “Nocturnal Animals.”

Avant garde fashion designer Tom Ford adapted the screenplay from the novel “Tony and Susan,” by Austin Wright.

“Nocturnal Animals” is both a thriller and a very twisted romance. It could also be seen as a satire of high-end modern art and the upper-crust social world.

This is apparent from the first few frames, as we see a grossly obese naked woman dancing and writhing about. We see the woman again on display as part of an opening show at the high-end Los Angeles art gallery owned by Susan Morrow (Amy Adams). The naked fat women may seem gross and revolting, but people are fawning over the “art,” calling it brilliant and congratulating Susan for curating it.

In reality Susan has come to hate what she does. She lives in a huge glass mansion overlooking L.A., but it is lonely and sterile. Her handsome second husband Hutton (Armie Hammer) has made some bad business deals and squandered most of the couple’s wealth. He snubs Susan’s request for a beach getaway because he has a “business trip” to New York. We see him there with another woman.

A package arrives for Susan. It is a manuscript proof for a novel written by her

first husband, Edward Sheffield (Jake Gyllenhaal). Susan has not seen Edward in 19 years. She dumped him because he was “too weak” and not ambitious enough. The novel, titled “Nocturnal Animals,” is dedicated to Susan. It is a violent, horrific story set in the badlands of West Texas.

Tony Hastings, also played by Jake Gyllenhaal, and his wife Laura (Isla Fisher) and teenage daughter India (Ellie Barber) are traveling to Tony’s family home in his vintage Mercedes-Benz. In the middle of nowhere they are menaced by two cars full of rednecks. Their car is damaged, forced off the road, and then it really gets bad.

The story flashes back and forth between Tony in Texas and Susan in L.A. There are also flashbacks to Susan and Edward’s initial romance and breakup. Susan had discouraged Edward from being a writer. The novel can be seen as his ultimate revenge.

The movie is meticulously cast, with Michael Channing riveting as a cancerous Texas detective who tries to help Tony bring to justice the three creeps who raped and killed his wife and daughter. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is creepy-scary as the main thug. Providing comic relief is Michael Sheen as Carlos, a gay trophy husband to a glittery socialite (Andrea Riseborough).

Laura Linney is chilling as Susan’s icy mom.

“Nocturnal Animals” is certainly not for everyone. The violence is sickening, and so is the modern art. The visuals by cinematographer Seamus McGarvey are spellbinding. So is Amy Adams, coming to the realization of the horrible life mistakes she has made. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers the most powerful performance of his career in the dual role of Edward/Tony. One thing for sure, “Nocturnal Animals” is never boring- if you can take it.

• A Boca Raton company that’s developing technology to make drones more useful to rescuers and police has been named one of the winners in Florida Venture Forum’s 2016 VentureTech Showcase. EagleEye one word/ mhp Intelligence was runner-up in the Nov. 1 competition, winning $50,000.

The company competed with 14 finalists that were chosen from a field of nearly 90. The first-place winner is headquartered outside South Florida: Naples-based Catalyst Orthoscience, a medical device company that has developed a new “more natural” shoulder replacement procedure that results in less stretching of the muscles and ligaments while the implant is placed. The company won $100,000.

More Paradoxes In Business

In September I wrote about paradoxes in business, how commonly held and widely accepted views about how to conduct business often run counter to a biblical worldview of the same practices.

Here are two others we should consider, both involving money management:

Financial Stewardship. When I was a commercial lender, a young man excitedly began telling me that Steinway Piano, a well-known company with a storied history, was for sale and he wanted our bank to loan him the money to purchase the company.

I admired this individual’s ambition, but was stunned when I asked how much money he needed to borrow.

Without hesitation, he replied, “I think they will probably want $200 million, and I will need to borrow all of it. I’m only 25 and I don’t have any money.” Apparently he expected me to walk out to the bank’s “money tree” and get him the amount he needed without any questions, not to mention collateral.

As you might guess, we did not loan this big-idea young man the money, but this experience has always stuck with me as a reminder of how casually people consider the use of debt in business. This illustrates a paradox we find in the business world about the use of money: The world often says use all the debt you can borrow, whether it is for a business, buying a house or even going to college, but God says we are to trust in Him, not the bank.

Proverbs 3:5 teaches, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” We are tempted to wonder whether God truly has our best interests at heart, especially when a seemingly good opportunity presents itself and we think we must act

quickly to capitalize on it. However, the Bible teaches we are stewards or managers of financial resources God has entrusted to us, not the owners.

We see this declared in 1 Chronicles 29:11, “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O LORD, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things.” God entrusts much to our care, but expects us to use it with wisdom – and by seeking His guidance – rather than acting by impulse.

Generosity. Here is another area where we see a great paradox between common practice and a biblical worldview. When I was in banking, one of my largest accounts was a construction-oriented business led by Sean. He squeezed his vendors for all he could get out of them, rarely providing anything in return.

Sean’s business was profitable because he drove his people hard and pressured his suppliers to minimize the expense side of the ledger. But few people enjoyed doing business with him.

He was operating according to a philosophy we often hear in the business world, that we should hoard our wealth. God, however, says we are to be generous, willing to freely give as He directs.

Then Sean had a dramatic spiritual conversion. He went from being a “taker” to becoming an extremely generous “giver.” In fact, over the years since he has given away millions of dollars to many worthy charitable causes.

A changed man, he is doing what the apostle Paul said in 1 Timothy 6:18 when he admonished, “Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share.”

FAU Honors Art2Music Awards Recipients

Florida Atlantic University recently announced the winners of its Art2Music Competition. In this collaboration, undergraduate artists in the Department of Visual Arts and Art History were invited to submit a piece of art in any medium. Art faculty chose the winning piece, and students in the Department of Music’s Commercial Music Program were then invited to compose music inspired by the winning piece. The winning artist is Sarah Rabinowitz and her piece is a sculpture titled, “How it Begins.”

The winning composer is Luis Castillo.

People with Type I diabetes (about 10% of diabetics) have an absolute deficiency in insulin and require insulin survival.

People with Type II diabetes (about 90% of diabetics) are either insulin resistant or have a relative insulin deficiency. While Type II diabetics ultimately require insulin, they are not dependent on it for survival.

How can you treat diabetes?

Diabetes is treated initially with lifestyles modifications that include regular exercise, a diet with moderate carbohydrates, low saturated fats and high fiber.

When these changes are not sufficient to control blood glucose then modifications are warranted, which may be oral or injectable.

What is insulin?

Insulin is a polypeptide hormone secreted by beta cells of the pancreas and is central to regulating carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Manufactured insulin comes in short, intermediate and long acting formulations.

What are some long-term effects of diabetes?

Long-term effects of diabetes can involve any organ systems. It increases the risk of myocardial infraction and stroke. It is a major cause of end-stage renal disease (requiring dialysis), blindness, and limb amputation from foot ulcers caused by peripheral neuropathy.

Rebecca Lautar, chair of the Department of Music, presented scholarships to the winners and Eric Landes, chair of the Department of Visual Arts and Art History, represented the art faculty. Art professor Brian McConnell presented a talk about the synergy between art and music.

Hoot/Wisdom Recordings is part of the Commercial Music Program in the Department of Music in FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. It is a student-run record label where students are involved in all aspects of the label, including songwriting, choreography, production, engineering, recording services, video services, promotion and marketing, talent scouting, website management, newsletter production, finance, legal issues, and accounting.

Hoot/Wisdom Recordings was established in 2002 and has produced 26 recordings to date.

What are some ways to prevent getting Type II diabetes?

The best way of preventing diabetes is a healthy lifestyle, including regular physical activity, minimal alcohol consumption, and eating a diet low in saturated fats with moderate carbohydrate consumption.

Is there a cure for diabetes?

Certainly in some obese individuals, weight loss can eliminate the need for medication and get glucose levels into a normal range. In people with Type I diabetes, transplantation of beta cells holds great promise in correcting the metabolic abnormalities associated with insulin deficiency.

How many people have diabetes?

According to a 2011 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes and an additional 79 million people > 20 years old have pre diabetes.

The estimated total cost of diabetes care approaches $200 billion.

Hubert Elkins, who preferred to be called “Hub”, passed away on November 12, 2016 from an extended illness. He most recently resided in Teaneck, New Jersey. He previously lived in Boca Raton, Florida and Port Washington, New York, where he was a long term member of Community Synagogue. Hub was a member of Mensa and Congregation B’nai Israel.

He leaves 3 sons: Douglas, Andrew and Jay, and 7 grandchildren: James, Nathaniel, Jordan, Sarah, Griffin, Liam & Ethan, 2 daughters-in-law, Vicki and Carol, and is survived by Doug’s partner, Barbara Bashaw and their daughter, Gigi.

Rita Bergman Elkins, his wife of 54 years, passed away in 2007.

He served in the US Navy in World War II. After completing his honorable service, Hub received a degree in engineering from the University of Michigan in 1949. In 1972, he formed Resource Data Systems, an information products distributor. The business was sold in 1996.

He will always be remembered in the hearts and minds of his family and friends.

His funeral will be Thursday, November 17. Please arrive at 11 am for

Boca Raton Philanthropist Local Dentist Helps Patient Smile Donates Two Busses to The Volen Again Center

David Underwood was sick and tired of what he saw in the mirror. His smile wasn’t the best that it could be and it was time he did something about it.

“Overall I was just tired of the way my smile was,” says Underwood.

Underwood hadn’t had the best experiences at dental appointments in the past. Having had judgmental comments and snide remarks by various dentists he met with heighten his insecurities, Underwood was turned off to having anything done to his teeth.

“My past experiences have been horrible,” he says. “But Regency Court Dentistry was referred to me as a great office with nice, friendly individuals.”

Having heard such great things about Regency Court Dentistry, a practice that provides comprehensive care and specializes in everything from extractions to dentures, Underwood became hopeful that he would be able to smile proud one day. After making an appointment, Dr. Fatmi and his amazing team of professionals met with Underwood to go over his dental problems as well as make a personal treatment plan using advanced techniques, and upscale equipment to help him achieve the best smile possible.

“Dr. Fatmi promised me he would do everything he could to make sure I was happy with my smile,” he says.

Underwood needed a lot of work, from root canals to crowns on almost every tooth. Dr. Fatmi, unlike many other dentists, assured Underwood that he would only do what was necessary, and would take every step to try and save as much as he could.

Since Underwood had his first appointment with the team, he’s been back to have follow-up work, as well as cleanings, all which left him more confidant about his teeth than ever.

“In my honest opinion from going to dentist to dentist, I have never found a doctor that seems to be more intrigued in what he is doing as well as generally caring about what you think,” says Underwood. “I would be crazy not to recommend him and already have.”

Boca Raton philanthropist Marleen Forkas donated two new buses to The Volen Center's community coach transit services for seniors in Palm Beach County.

The new vehicles have wraps showing The Volen Center logo with Forkas name on three sides. Each new van has room for 16 seats with two wheelchairs. They were immediately added to a fleet of 38 older vehicles, of which nine have more than 100,000 miles on the odometer, according to the center's CEO Elizabeth Lugo.

"We are always expanding our

fleet and retiring vehicles after seven or eight years and 200,000 miles" said Lugo.

"These two new beautiful buses will take people to critical destinations so they can live independently and have quality of life."

To celebrate, a luncheon and dedication ceremony took place on November 3 where numerous Boca Raton residents were in attendance.

According to the center's website, the center has been providing rides for seniors 60 and older, for things such as medical appointments, Volen Center programs, adult day care, and grocery stores since 1968.

sports Old Dominion Capitalizes on FAU’s Flat Second Half By: Stephanie Sonseca

On the warm fall evening FAU took the time to recognize their 16 graduating seniors at the last home game of the season against the Old Dominion Monarchs. After FAU honored their seniors, Old Dominion made their way on to the field and formed a circle which they call “the Circle of Unity.” Old Dominion began the “Circle of Unity” after the shooting by police in Tulsa, as their sign of their support for both the lost lives and police.

FAU started with possession and Quarterback Jason Driskel starts the game with a 16 yard pass to Kalib Woods, leaving FAU at Old Dominion’s 20-yard line. After Devin “Motor” Singletary was stopped by TJ Ricks at the 2 yd, Greg “Buddy” Howell finds himself at ODU’s 2-yard line on the 3rd down. With a rush for two, Buddy Howell makes his 12th touchdown of the season, setting a record for the most rushing touchdowns made in a single season by a player.

Moments later, after ODU inched themselves down the field, they found themselves at 3rd and goal. Quarterback David Washington attempted a pass to Jonathan Duhart on the 3rd down but was broken up by Jalen Young. The Monarchs settled for a 19 yard field goal kicked by Brad Davis.

A 14-yard pass by Jason Driskel to Kalib Woods, put FAU at ODU’s 16yard line. With a handoff by Driskel, Motor would not go down as he broke three tackles and put FAU on the 2-yard line.

The ball was again given to Motor who made his way into the endzone giving FAU an 11 point lead over the Monarchs.

On a 4th and 1, the Monarch’s quarterback David Washington connects a 17-yard pass to Ray Lawry putting ODU deep in Owl's territory. On the next play, Washington found receiver Jonathan Duhart for 23-yards and a touchdown.

Following the possession, the punt by ODU was blocked by the Owl’s linebacker Kris Harris putting FAU at ODU’s 24 yard line. Following a 22-yard rush by Motor, Singletary finds the endzone again for his 9th touchdown of the season.

FAU held off the Monarch on the 8-yard line, forcing ODU to settle for the last field goal of the half. All other attempts before the half by ODU and FAU failed.

into the second half the Monarchs made their way down the field and Washington found Duhart again in the endzone.

Looking to come back in the game ODU went for a two-point conversion that was ran by Washington.

At it again were the Monarch’s when Washington launched a ball down the field and found wide receiver Zach Pascal for a miraculous acrobatic 45-yard catch for a touchdown.

FAU trailing by seven tries to respond with a 38- yard pass to Kalib Woods, but FAU was unable to capitalize and had to settle for a field goal.

But ODU was in attack mode and came back and put another seven on the board, this time finding Duhart again for his 2nd touchdown of the night. Later in his post-game interview, Head Coach Charlie Partridge, said looking back that it was at that at that point the Owls were unable to recover from the 11-point deficit.

The Monarchs closed the game when Washington’s pass found running back Jeremy Cox, who broke two tackles and made his way down the field for his first touchdown of the night. Jeremy Cox’s touchdown was the longest touchdown for ODU since they joined the FPS level.

Washington closed off the night with a total of 417 yards, completing his first 300-yard plus passing game of the season and 3rd of his career.

Driskel finished with a 219-yard passing game, with 15 completions out of his 28 attempts. Azee Al-Shaair had a total of 12 tackles on the night despite saying that he felt “drained” and “fatigued” in his post game interview.

When it came to closing out the game Jason Driskel said “It’s just that they made plays [in the second half] and we didn’t.” Driskel continued, “our guys have the ability to make plays but it just comes down to consistency.”

Remembering that it was Senior Night, when asked about the seniors, Junior Captain, Kalib Woods, said that he’s always looked up to them and that “These seniors are the definition of staying tough through adversity.”

When asked what happened in the second half, it was almost unanimous, and in the words of Kalib Woods, they came out in the second half “flat.”

FAU travels to Murfreesboro, Tennessee for their last game of the season against the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders at 5:30p.m.

Blazers Soccer Looks To Build From Last Season in Search of Elusive District Championship

By Stephanie Fonseca The Boca Christian High School soccer team has been on the rise in the past year.

Coming off of a losing 201415 season, and having a coaching change at the close of that season, the 2015-16 season was progress.

Last season, the team had the best record in school history, Forward Stefan Kneffel shattered the scoring record and Caeden Hood came just a bit shy of beating the assist record, a record currently held by Head Coach David Weil. To many, it may seem like there might not be much left on the list. For one, Coach Weil wants to see his player shatter his assist record. But the main goal for this season is a District Championship, a mark that the team has yet to reach.

Leaving off of last season on a sour 2-1 loss to Dona Klein in the District Semifinal, the team lost some key seniors but gained in number and talents.

The season comes with a couple firsts early on. For the first time in the school’s history they will field a JV squad, where they will practice together and separate for games.

“Pure talent wise, this is the most talented squad we’ve ever had,” said Coach Weil.

But his main focus is seeing how these separate talents could come together to make a winning team battling

through challenges that the team might face. But throughout the season Coach Weil wants to know if through those challenges, “ they rely on each other and become a team or are they a bunch of individuals.” Which Weil believes can determine whether they will be a good team or a force to be reckoned with.

The returning team has a lot of familiar faces. The Blazers’ strong back four are returning as well as their leading goal scorer, two leading assists players and two goalies with the addition to another two to the team. With the familiar faces returning they also have more talent which Coach Weil hopes will lead to more scoring players he can count on.

But looking at the peaks from last season, like their first win ever over Yeshiva, in an emphatic 5-0 fashion, they also look at their district semifinal loss which pushed them in the off season.

“I’ve seen teams get disappointed,” added Coach Weil. “The emotion that was in their face and the pain and heartbreak from that loss is really pushing them and giving them a drive in the offseason.”

Coach Weil also acknowledged that this team is the first that collectively went out during summer conditioning and has been preparing themselves for the next season.

The main goal this season, says Coach Weil, is that elusive district title. “I look up and Boys soccer is the only one that doesn’t have a banner, and I don’t like that at all,” expressed Weil. With the group of young talents that he has, he’s excited to see how the new players fit into the puzzle and is expecting great things for the season.
