Community FAU Receives Art Donation Valued At More Than $3.8M Florida Atlantic University recently received a donation of artwork valued at more than $3.8 million from Rick and Lesley Stone. A total of 17 paintings, including works by Henri Matisse, Edward Willis Redfield, David Park and John Henry Twachtman, will make up the Rick and Lesley Stone Art Collection, which will be housed in the Ritter Art Gallery on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. “We are honored to receive this coveted art collection from the Stones,” said Michael J. Horswell, Ph.D., dean of FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. “With the addition of such a distinctive collection, our University Galleries and art history programs have the potential to establish a teaching collection component that will enhance educational opportunities and professional training for students.” The Stones generously also provided additional support for the creation of an Art History Teaching Laboratory in the Ritter Gallery. The space and collection will provide students opportunities to study art up close. “We are pleased to provide these works with a lovely permanent home where they can be enjoyed up-close by FAU students forever,” said Rick Stone. “We think the space is perfect not just for
viewing but for learning about art and art curation.” Rick Stone is a Palm Beach attorney and an adjunct professor in FAU’s College of Business. The Department of Visual Arts and Art History at FAU actively engages and expands students’ creative and scholarly abilities within the context of a disciplinary and interdisciplinary setting. The program is devoted to offering a diverse curriculum dedicated to educating artists and art historians. There are more than 800 graduate and undergraduate majors currently enrolled, making it one of the largest art programs in the state of Florida. It attracts both national and international students, who study alongside of more than 20 full–time faculty and active artists. “Giving students access to such high-quality works of art in a teaching setting allows us to better prepare them for careers in museums, galleries, and other arts professions,” said Karen Leader, Ph.D., associate professor of art history, who worked with the Stones in shaping the gift. “As we did this spring, we look forward to inviting Mr. Stone into our classes to partner with him in this educational initiative.”
PBSC named a top 150 U.S. Community College
Palm Beach State College was named today as one of the 150 community colleges eligible to compete for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, the nation’s signature recognition of high achievement and performance among America’s community colleges. The colleges were picked by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program from a pool of nearly 1,000 public two-year colleges using publicly available data that showed strong and improving student outcomes in learning, completion rates, employment rates and earnings, and equity. “We are pleased to be named a Top 150 U.S. Community College once again and to have an opportunity to apply for the Aspen Prize,’’ said PBSC President Ava L. Parker. “This validates the work that we are doing as an institution and through our Panther Strong 2023 Strategic Plan to help all students excel and reach their highest potential.” The 150 community colleges named today are located in 39 states in urban, rural, and suburban areas, serving as few as 500 students and as many as 75,000 students, and they represent the diversity and depth of the community
college sector. Data shows that over the last two years, student retention, graduation rates, and degree completion have improved at the top tier of 150 Aspen Prize-eligible colleges. “Community colleges play a vital role in developing talent and enabling social mobility across the country, and it’s critical for them to get better at what they do,” said Josh Wyner, executive director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. “We’re pleased to see evidence that these institutions are improving, that more are delivering on their promise. We’re also pleased to play a role in honoring outstanding community colleges and sharing what works to ensure great outcomes for students—through graduation and beyond.” The top ten finalists for the 2021 Aspen Prize, which is funded by ECMC Foundation, Joyce Foundation, The Kresge Foundation, and Siemens Foundation, will be named in May 2020. The Aspen Institute will then conduct site visits to each of the finalists and collect additional quantitative data, including employment and earnings data. A distinguished jury will make award decisions in spring 2021. Heizer Media Group

Boca Raton Residents Awarded Girl Scout Silver Award Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida held their first Silver Award Showcase honoring the 2019 class of Silver Award Girl Scouts on October 13, 2019. Among the 137 Girl Scouts who earned their Silver Award this year, 40 of them are Palm Beach County residents who worked as individuals or as a small group to complete 17 different projects benefiting their communities. In Boca Raton, ten outstanding Girl Scouts completed three Silver Award projects benefitting the city. From Troop 20603, Abigail C., Margarita L., Sandra L., and Malina P. created their project “Helping Educators Help Others” in order to aid staff at J.C. Mitchell Elementary in Boca. This group of Girl Scouts worked together to create independent work tasks for children with autism to help them with their developmental skills. About 50 kids per school year will benefit from their hard work and the staff can utilize their donation as they see fit. Marlowe Hyman from Troop 20810 created her project “Project Imagination” so she could bring art to the afterschool program at Coral Sunset Elementary in Boca. Marlowe gathered materials and created lesson plans for her students with the hopes that they would learn to appreciate art and continue to pursue it as they move forward in life. Every Thursday and Friday during the spring Marlowe volunteered at the afterschool program, not only helping her students
but inspiring others to volunteer their time as well. After learning that 8 to 12 million cats and dogs are killed each year because they do not have homes, Corrine H., Ella H., Megan K., Olivia L., and Sarah V. of Troop 20912 created their project “Breaking the Cycle of Pet Overpopulation” to battle the issue on their home turf. These five Girl Scouts worked together to host special training events focused on pet adoption at the Petco in Boca Raton, in Boynton Beach, at the Justin Bartlett Animal Rescue in Royal Palm Beach and at the Burger FI in Boca Raton. They addressed the issue of pet overpopulation by educating others about the benefits of adoption and distributing fliers about the issue. Over 44 families were served by their project and 25 dogs and 19 cats were adopted due to their efforts! The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award that can be earned by Girl Scout Cadettes in grades 6-8. It is accomplished by an individual or small group of girls who design and complete a project with a minimum of 50 logged hours. In order to earn the award, Cadettes must flex their leadership muscles by doing research and taking action on issues of their choice, all while creating positive change. Their project must fulfill a need in the community, create change, and be sustainable with long-term possibilities.

Boca’s Bernadette Russell: A Champion for Foster Kids For many youths in the foster care system, life is a myriad of emotional issues - often snatched and shuffled between homes and across school zones without any notice - and many teachers are simply not equipped to handle their challenges. One local educator is being lauded for her effort to ensure the foster care students on her campus are prepared for academic achievement and success after college. The Boca Raton-based nonprofit organization Best Foot Forward recently awarded Dr. Bernadette Russell, Palm Beach State College’s vice president of elearning and instructional technology, with the inaugural Anchor Award for going that extra mile. Donna Biase and Debbie Ellman, who co-founded the organization nine years ago, said that without Russell and the college’s support, they would not be able to achieve their goal of helping students earn an education. While the high school graduation rate for foster youth is 46 percent, only 3 percent finish college, they said. That number may be higher because most state education departments,
including Florida, are not required to communicate with child welfare agencies about which students are in foster care. Locally, there are some success stories. Twelve of the students in Best Foot Forward have completed college and most of them attended Palm Beach State. Studies show that roughly onethird of foster care students change schools at least five times before they reach adulthood. Each time that student changes a school, they fall four to six months behind, according to data collected by the Legal Center for Foster Care and Education. “When we enroll students, they come with a lot of different challenges. It requires a strong partnership of working together to be able to work through all the obstacles and barriers,’’ Ellman said in a news release. “Dr. Russell is the one that makes that happen. She sets the tone for that partnership. She is like our liaison to the whole College.” When it comes to learning, Dr. Russell, who also is the provost of the Boca Raton campus, has a “by any means necessary” attitude. “Whatever it is that our needs are, she and her counterparts and staff are
right there making sure we get to the right sources that can solve our issues. Nothing is too small or too big of a problem,” said Biase, whose organization has served more than 200 children since its inception. I have worked with Dr. Russell on a few youth and community-related projects since she joined the college family in 2007. Forging community partnerships has always been high on her agenda, and she is a fierce advocate for educational access to all students, in particularly, those who are marginalized. An out-of-the box thinker, she is always cooking up ideas to challenge and empower our youth, especially those that offer a global perspective. This is evidenced by the collegewide International Education Center - housed at the Boca Raton campus - where students broaden their horizons by studying abroad. The Philippine native sees the program as an opportunity to enhance and open windows to the world for her students, experiences she thinks will eventually be memorable for the rest of their lives. “For this reason, it is a special community partnership that provides access
to education and success to individuals who otherwise would not have received an education,” she said in the release. Addition to her engagement in several organizations, she is a member of the Office Depot Foundation Board and the planning team for the Women’s Symposium. She has amassed an impressive collection of awards for her civic involvement. Her academic accomplishments are equally impressive: a Fulbright scholarship to Germany, the Chancellor’s Award for Professional Excellence from the State University of New York and a fellowship to the Harvard University Management Development Program. Additionally, she is a 2016 recipient of the Atlantic Institute Board of Directors Leadership Award. Dr. Russell understands that as a community, we have a unique responsibility for students in foster care. A judge has determined that their parents can’t take care of them and has made them a dependent of the state. Therefore, they are all our children and she is doing her part to empower them.
POSITIVE LIVING By Robert J. Tamasy
Here I Am. Send Me! Have you ever done much volunteer work? Many of us might think it is all we can do to accomplish our regular work responsibilities. However, every week millions of people volunteer in a vast variety of ways. If it were not for them, many important things would never get done. Volunteers provide vital services, such as helping teachers in schools; aiding individuals who are homebound due to illness or disability; assisting in orphanages; providing foster care for children; supporting international relief agencies; addressing needs of the poor and needy; participating in short-term mission trips; responding to natural disasters; mentoring both young people and adults; and helping to care for wounded and endangered animals. Charitable organizations like the Salvation Army have been built by volunteers. Years ago, after undergoing open-heart surgery, I volunteered at a local
November 8 - November 14, 2019
hospital to visit with patients who had gone through similar procedures to offer encouragement, share from my own experiences, and give suggestions for their recovery process. It was rewarding for me, especially since I could relate to what they were experiencing and knew how much such visits would have meant for me. For those of us who follow Jesus Christ, volunteering is a privilege. In the Old Testament, we find the example of one who recognized the importance of being a volunteer. In Isaiah 6:8, we read, “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” God took him up on his offer, and Isaiah became a bold spokesman for the Lord, calling people to repentance and offering spiritual assurance to those who were seeking to know Him better. Everyone who has been involved
with CBMC in a significant way understands it relies heavily upon volunteers. It consists of business and professional people who willingly give of their time, energy and resources to help others not only with workplace responsibilities and challenges, but also in helping them discover how biblical truth and principles relate to everyday life and work. CBMC promotes the concept of “marketplace ambassadors,” people who see their work not only as livelihoods but also as opportunities to represent Jesus to everyone they encounter. “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:20). It is like Isaiah declaring, “Here am I. Send me!” Where are ambassadors to go? The Good News of Jesus Christ is not limited to certain people groups or segments
www.bocaratontribune.com
of society. It is to be caringly and faithfully communicated in every continent, to every nation, city and town. “He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation’” (Mark 16:15). Who are we to serve? Workplaces around the world all consist of people needing to hear the life-transforming message of Christ. In the process, we are to serve as ambassadors – His willing, volunteer representatives. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19). What are we to do? The mission is not simply to convey information, but to help people understand what it means to follow Christ, practicing and obeying what He taught. “…as you are going, make disciples…teaching them to observe all that I have commanded…” (Matthew 28:19-20).

Broadway Live at Pompano Cultural Center
The Perils Of Overblown Self-Importance
I attended the opening night show of Broadway Live at the Pompano Cultural Center, a musical directed by Shari Upbin to benefit “Insight for the Blind”. A large crowd enjoyed nine delightful singers showcasing many songs from top Broadway musicals. A lovely cocktail reception was held prior to the show. All in all a very enjoyable evening with great talented people!
My son-in-law, Brian, met with a mutual friend who previously had served as CFO for a well-known, publicly traded company. When I asked how his meeting went, Brian replied, “He shared an idea with me that I will never forget: ‘You are never as important as you think.’” An older, wiser businessman of this man’s stature sharing this insight with Brian was both profound and helpful. The executive knew well what it was like to hold a role of considerable power and prominence. However, he had also learned firsthand how fleeting influence and prestige can be. Without even a moment’s notice, it can all be stripped away. That day, Brian learned no matter how high or low on the corporate ladder it may be, every position is vulnerable and replaceable. This is true for top executives, baseball managers and football coaches, elected officials, restaurant managers and construction foremen. No one is indispensable. For this reason, it is crucial that we guard our hearts against pride, especially when we have experienced some successes in life. The executive wisely said, “You are never as important as you think.” In the Scriptures we find similar words of caution. For instance, the apostle Paul in Romans 12:3 offered this admonition: “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”
In numerous passages, the Bible uses the term “puffed up” to describe people who have gotten caught up with pride and the delusion of self-importance. Colossians 2:18 warns of becoming deceived of people with wrong motives and beliefs: “Do not let anyone who delights in false humility… disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind.” How can we avoid these pitfalls – becoming “puffed up” or thinking more highly of ourselves than we should? Some other passages are helpful in this respect: Recognize the pitfalls of pride. We all have encountered people that seemed convinced that no one in the room was as important as they were. Often these same people experience humiliation when they fail, or someone proves their self-assessments were greatly exaggerated. “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2). Make a conscious effort to show deference to others. Numerous studies have shown that the most effective leaders, the ones that succeed in motivating and inspire those they lead, are those who exhibit humility and genuine concern for other people. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4).

Big Apple Shopping Mall and Bazaar signs Transmedia Group as PR firm
NOTICE OF BROWNFIELD DESIGNATION PUBLIC HEARINGS NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA will hold public hearings on October 22, 2019 at 9:30 am and November 19, 2019 at 9:30 am in the Palm Beach County Robert Weisman Governmental Center, 6th Floor Commission Chambers, 301 N. Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, Florida, in order to consider adoption of the following resolution:
Once a run-of-the-mill flea market in Delray Beach has been transformed into a bustling Manhattan-style mini mall where shoppers can stroll along Fifth Avenue while Frank Sinatra belts out New York New York. "Our PR campaign will ask shoppers why fly to the Big Apple, New York City when all the glitter and panache of Manhattan is right here in your back yard at better prices," said Adrienne Mazzone, TransMedia Group president and a compulsive shopper herself. Originating in 1971, The Big Apple Shopping Mall and Bazaar has risen above its humble origins and has been totally reborn as a fun and exciting shopping mall in Florida. "The Big Apple Shopping Mall and Bazaar went through a highly selective process before picking us to represent them, which makes a lot of sense as TransMedia was born in New York when Tom Madden started the award-winning firm after leaving his lofty position at NBC," said Mazzone. TransMedia Group has been around since 1981, so both the Bazaar and its publicists share lots of history, marketing skills and vintage charm, added Mazzone. "We'll show how The Big Apple
Shopping Mall and Bazaar transformed into a beautiful place to stroll, with a Jewelry Exchange and Salon and Spa, including dining, a hair salon, clothing, shoes, wellness supplements and more. "This place is going to light up like a Christmas Tree in Central Park and be a huge hit in Delray, with events, shopping, food and wine tasting, which TransMedia will be telling about daily via our specialty, social media." Publicity from TransMedia Group's PR team will include media campaigns, book signings, fashion shows, which will launch October 19, 2019 Thinkin' Pink by Angela Pocillico show open to the public! Under the direction of Chad Ruggiere, the Vice President of Business Development and Marketing, and Jerry Sosa, the General Manager, Transmedia Group is excited to see BIG changes and Chad and Jerry have already been shaking up the big apple! Business changes, new vendors, and a beautiful new cafĂŠ to boot. "Our PR will rustle with innovative ideas as we execute a fast paced plan implemented by a team of pros who'll make The Big Apple Shopping Bazaar the toast of Florida," she said.

FAU Partners With St. Lucie Public Schools Florida Atlantic University and St. Lucie Public Schools (SLPS) recently collaborated to develop the Social, Wellness, and Emotional Learning Leaders (S.W.E.L.L.) program designed to increase the number of school counselors in SLPS high needs schools. A grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help confront the shortage of Mental Health Professionals will fund the program. S.W.E.L.L. is an accelerated 60-credit graduate degree customized to train 75 pre-k through grade 12 school counselors in St. Lucie’s public schools over the next five years. The degree will include fast-track online and hybrid coursework in conjunction with 750 hours of field experience. The goal is to create a pool of high-quality, diverse school counselors with the skills and specialized training necessary to meet the needs of SLPS students. This will allow the district to lower its average ratio from one counselor to 500 students to the American School Counselor Association’s recommended ratio of 1-to-250. “FAU has a long history of developing highly skilled mental health professionals and that they are thrilled to work with Elizabeth Villares on this program,” said Helen Wild, SLPS chief academic officer. Villares, Ph.D., will act as FAU program director and advisor to S.W.E.L.L. students. She currently serves as a professor of school counseling within the Department of Counselor Education in FAU’s College of Education. Her area of specialization includes collaborating with school counselors to de-
www.bocaratontribune.com
velop action research, outcome research and program evaluation projects. She is interested in the implementation of school counselor led evidence-based programs that lead to an improvement in student achievement. “With the increase in certified school counselors, counselors can spend more time delivering evidence-based interventions and direct services to address students’ mental health and social emotional learning needs,” said Villares. The first cohort of 30 students will commence in spring 2020, followed by 15 students in spring 2021 and 30 students in spring 2022. Grant funds will cover two-thirds of students’ tuition and related fees. The college anticipates that the school counseling program at FAU will serve as a model to other institutions on how to expand upon its “outreach and in-reach” efforts by building university and school district partnerships that are mutually beneficial. “We are very pleased to be a part of this project. The crucial training that these students will receive at FAU will provide much-needed certified school counselors to help students in St. Lucie County address academic, social-emotional, and mental health needs. It is a forward-thinking project on behalf of the district, and it is the kind of university-community partnerships that we are committed to facilitate,” said Paul Peluso, professor and chair of FAU’s Department of Counselor Education.

4ocean Expands Product Offerings; Doubles Down on ‘One Pound Promise’ 4ocean, the purpose-driven company founded to help end the world's ocean plastic crisis, announces the release of its new sustainably sourced, 100% organic cotton branded t-shirts. This marks the first wearable product line outside of the brand's iconic postconsumer recycled material bracelet since the company's inception in 2017. 4ocean's t-shirts support its mission to clean the ocean and coastlines while working to stop the inflow of plastic by changing consumption habits. From farm to finished product, the entire 4ocean t-shirt supply chain is environmentally and socially responsible. In addition, 4ocean t-shirts are 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton in an effort to protect our waterways from harmful plastic microfibers when washed. "We remain committed to developing sustainable product offerings to support our growing trash removal operations, while inspiring change at the source," said 4ocean co-founder Alex Schulze. "With about 300 million
tons of plastic produced each year, it was important for us to do our part,
plastic while also creating everyday goods that are made from repurposed
and create a t-shirt that wouldn't harm the ocean or the planet." 4ocean recently announced a strong focus on expanding product development. With the increase of its product offerings, the brand plans to release tools that help people reduce their consumption of single-use
materials collected in 4ocean's global cleanup operations. "As a worldwide community, we must work alongside one another to combat pollution in our shared ocean and our coastlines," said 4ocean co-founder Andrew Cooper. "Our new t-shirts provide another way for

individuals to fight the ocean plastic crisis alongside us, one pound at a time." Available in two original designs, 4ocean's t-shirts will be offered in unisex sizing (XS-XXL), as well as a women's-specific v-neck (XS-XL) in colors blue and heather grey for $30.00 via 4ocean.com. With every 4ocean product sold worldwide, 4ocean pledges to recover one pound of trash from the ocean, while advocating for sustainable innovation and inspiring people around the world to reduce their consumption of single-use plastic. The company is also developing a circular end-of-life plan for every 4ocean product to eliminate waste at the end of a product lifecycle. Since its founding in 2017, 4ocean has removed more than six million pounds of trash from the ocean and coastlines, a statistic that is documented and audited by the Better Business Bureau. The company currently employs more than 300 people in the U.S., Indonesia, and Haiti.

Lynn’s Manzoni to Represent Italy Lynn Men’s Soccer Slips Up on the Road at Florida Tech at 2019 Spirit International Tournament
Lynn University men’s golfer Giovanni Manzoni, an integral part of the Fighting Knights’ 2019 National Championship team, has been selected by the Italian Golf Federation to participate in the Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Houston, Texas from Nov. 7-9. Manzoni has been playing his best golf of late, winning the Swiss International Amateur Championship this past summer. With that victory, the sophomore from Cremella, Italy qualified for the prestigious Omega European Masters and was the only amateur to make the weekend cut. During his short time in Blue and White, Manzoni has already been named a PING Second Team AllAmerican, also being selected for the PING Freshman All-America Team. He became just the third golfer in program history, and second freshman, to win the NCAA’s South Regional. Manzoni then followed that performance by going 2-0-1 in Lynn’s three match play rounds on its way to back-to-back na-
tional titles. Established in 2001, The Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship, played at Whispering Pines Golf Club, is a world class amateur golf event featuring 20 countries from six continents. Each country is represented by their two best men and two best women players. The Spirit truly showcases the stars of tomorrow; past Spirit Champions include current professional tour stars Lorena Ochoa, Brandt Snedeker, Paula Creamer and Martin Kaymer. The Spirit is a biennial event alternating years with the World Amateur Team Championships. All 80 participants enjoy an Olympic like experience including Opening Ceremonies, International Village accommodations, festive dinner parties, Closing Ceremonies and a 54-hole golf event where the world’s best amateur golfers compete for gold medals. The Spirit is hosted by the Spirit Golf Association, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to promoting amateur golf for the benefit of health related causes.
