Community Police Seeks Intruder who Attacked, Robbed Boca Raton Couple By CRA News Service

Boca Raton police continue their search for a man they say broke into the home of a sleeping couple and attacked them, then fled with cash and jewelry. The incident happened shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, in the 200 block of South Country Club Boulevard. The couple told police they were awakened by a male, who is about 6-foot-4, in their bedroom. The suspect ransacked the bedroom, attacked both the husband and

the wife, and then fled from the home with cash and jewelry, police said. The intruder, who was wearing a mask, entered the bedroom through an unlocked sliding door, police said. The suspect is described as being 6 foot 4 inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing all black clothing and a black “fishing” mask, and possibly long dreadlocks tied back. Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to call Detective Laz Kimsal at 561-620-6144,

Boca Raton Elementary School Improves Two Letter Grades

Eight District schools are celebrating improvement by at least two letter grades, while 14 schools under state intervention increased their school grades, as part of the preliminary school grades released Friday by the Florida Department of Education. Overall, there were 58 District-operated schools in the School District of Palm Beach County that earned A’s from the state, and 37 District-operated schools that earned B’s. Glades-area schools in particular had a strong showing, with seven of 11 traditional schools improving their grade. “Our students, teachers, principals, parents and staff are the foundation of our success as a District,” said Superintendent Robert Avossa, Ed.D. “I’m particularly impressed by the hard work put in by the students and teachers at our schools, which resulted in substantial improvement this year - we are all celebrating your accomplishments today.” Student performance on the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) provides the foundation for state grades, based on a school grading system adopted by the State Board of Education. The 2015-2016 school year marked the first year in the state’s new accountability system that FSA learning gains are included in school grades. This year’s grades will serve as a baseline for comparison in future school grade releases. Districts and schools are rated “A” through “F” based on a percentage of points earned. Schools that did not test at least 95

percent of students received an “I.” The eight schools that improved by two letter grades are: Belle Glade Elementary School, from an F to a C Boca Raton Elementary School, from a C to an A Crosspointe Elementary School, from a C to an A K.E. Cunningham/Canal Point Elementary School, from an F to a C Lake Shore Middle School, from an F to a C Northmore Elementary School, from an F to a C Roosevelt Elementary School, from an F to a C Rosenwald Elementary School, from a D to a B The 14 District schools under state monitoring were categorized as low-performing under state statute, and had to meet specific performance metrics outlined under Florida Statutes and state administrative codes. Schools and districts are accountable for improving the academic achievement of all students, and turning around low-performing schools. The District received a B, just three points shy of an A, but outperformed other large urban school districts in seven of 11 categories on the FSA, including English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science and Social Studies achievement; ELA and Math learning gains; and graduation rate.

The Answer is Voting, Prayers If there was ever a time when Americans need to vote as well as pray, it is now. In a few days, Republicans will convene in Cleveland for the GOP’s National Convention where they are expected to select their next Pied Piper, Donald Trump. And from July 25-28, a similar charade will take place at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, and Hillary Clinton will be tapped as the party’s savior. When one considers the choices for who could likely be the next leader of this free nation, it is enough to make the hair on the back of your neck bristle. You will understand then why prayers will be necessary. To pour salt in a wound, we are rebounding from a breathtakingly horrible week where police shot and killed two black men in Louisiana and Minnesota under what appear to be questionable circumstances. It should be clear to everyone, in particularly black males, that we need to pray and exercise our rights at the polls. We also saw where U.S. Army veteran Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, ambushed police at a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas the following night and fatally shot five and wounded seven others. He was killed by a bomb attached to a robot drone

Several friends, both whites and blacks, said they had “the conversation” with their children in the days following the latest shootings, because they know that when a life is unjustly snatched away, it impacts everyone. Since the killings, I have appeared on two radio shows and a few community forums to share my take. As a mentor, I find myself having “the conversation” too often with my teenagers, many whom are black. I do not speak for the community, but I think it is safe to say that a broad cross-section of Americans are fed up with the number of blacks who were killed by police in questionable circumstances. The racial makeup at the demonstrations around the country is proof that many whites are also against what seems to be the targeting of blacks by law enforcement. These, however, are symptoms of a bigger problem. This comes from a history of mistreatment in North America, thousands of lynchings, Jim Crow laws and a shameful legacy of white supremacy that lingers today in our socialization and mind sets. How do we address the problem? one of the radio personalities asked me. We certainly do not need more noisy street

protests, grandstanding attorneys at impassioned news conferences, prayer vigils, resounding pleas for justice, demands for police body cameras and good lord, calls for better police-community relations. Much of this rhetoric inflames rather than heals. What we need is administrative and legislative action that will provide protection both for residents and police. We need police reform, training and above all, more education on both sides. The police need to learn how to deescalate a situation and how to deal with our children. Members of the community need to learn how to conduct themselves, when dealing with the police. It is unfortunate that in 2016 we have to do this in a country where all men are created equal. I encourage all parents to be proactive and hold “the conversation” with your children. Teach them how to act respectfully when dealing with law enforcement officers. As we see here in south Florida every year, with the summer comes a high rate of drownings. So, as a preventative measure, we teach our kids how to swim. Such should be the case with our young men who are getting slaughtered. We need

to teach them how to survive in that environment. Above all, this will take action at the polls. What we need is for people to get registered to vote and vote in the upcoming primaries. That’s why on Saturday, Aug. 20, KOP Mentoring Network is spearheading a Register to Vote Rally where we plan to register 1,000 young people between the ages of 18 and 25 at three churches in Delray Beach. There also will be counselors on hand to provide information for those residents who need to restore their rights to vote after paying their debt to society. As we elect our city, state and federal officials, we need to do our research to see who has the best interest of all people in mind. After all, when a “loose cannon” barges into a school and slaughters babies, and a nut case guns down worshippers in a prayer meeting in a church and now a whacko kills and injuries police officers while they are protecting people at a peaceful protest, it makes you wonder what is next. People are frustrated and tired. And I am too. It will take only prayers and voting intelligently.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Your Influence Can Endure! If you have been useful with your talents for a period of time in the recent past, you need not stop the action in whatever area you have been functioning; you are entitled to continue and excel. Nothing should impede its continuation toward greater, higher excellence. The area of your utility may change, but nothing should deny your contribution from remaining ongoing, positively affecting people and events! Even if you are denied opportunities to do what has been your life-long contribution, you can still create new venues to provide

and dispense significant services which are intended to affect the largest possible number of people, in a positive manner! Other persons’ denials to you need not force you into oblivion, confined to a shelf, even if that shelf is masqueraded as a monument to you. Your greatest honor is not to be limited to past deeds alone but, rather, to ongoing realizations as long as you have something genuine to offer – items that can still make a valid, positive difference in other lives! In order for that to occur with unfaltering

frequency, you have to know where you need to be, and what are the best routes to lead you there, knowing also what to anticipate correctly for proper action once you get there! Creativity, being present and adequately utilized, can lead the way to ongoing, lasting deeds with the infuence they provide! A productive life is one of continual motion, both intellectually and actively, in the delivery of what is being conceived and produced. Any doer is never stationary, but is always going somewhere, or getting out

of somewhere unfit for one to remain! Avoid being stuck in the wrong trajectory and activity that could hinder your advancement, productivity and impact for a long time. Daily seek to achieve something of permanent worth, leaving a lasting legacy, rather than merely repeat the ordinary. Plan for a significant accomplishment to leave behind and see it carried into new heights of significance!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Female “Ghostbusters” for a New Generation

Charlotte’s Travels

Photos by Charlotte Beasley

Yesterday my travels took me to Checkers Old Munchen German Restaurant in Pompano Beach, where I was joined by my friend, Khalilah Ali, former wife of Muhammed Ali. My friend, Wendy , Khalilah and I enjoyed a delicious lunch of Weiner

Schnitzel, spaetzle and dumpling. Khalilah told us stories of her life while married to Muhammed, she was his second wife and has four children with him. She is writing a book of her life with Muhammed.

To get to the point, “Ghostbusters” is more enjoyable than I expected. It probably helped that I saw the screening with two young females; my daughter and her significant other. Director Paul Feig (“Spy, “Bridesmaids”) has basically recycled the original 1984 plot, but with women instead of men doing battle with CG-enhanced paranormal forces in New York City. Those women are paranormal authors Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy); nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann (a scene-stealing Kate McKinnon) and MTA worker Patty Toland (Leslie Jones). This movie has rated terrible word-ofmouth even before its release. How dare they!, etc. So I invited two young women to see it. Surprise! They loved it. Feig cast four of the funniest women in the business, plus dreamboat hunk Chris

Hemsworth as their dim-witted receptionist, Kevin, playing the Annie Potts role. I saw the original movie only once, but it left enough of an impression that I noticed sly references to the original. Of course there is the New York City setting, which is loaded with ghosts. The ghost-busting girls first set up shop in a Chinese restaurant, then move to a decommissioned firehouse, as in the original. They even have a Cadillac ghost-busting car, though it has been updated from a 1959 limousine to a late 1980s hearse, which is on loan from Leslie Jones’ character. In another tribute to the original, Bill Murray plays a cameo as a paranormal debunker. Is “Ghostbusters” better than the original? No. But it is a tolerable bit of nonsense that lets the girls have their day to play.

From time to time we hear of people taking a break from their jobs, college, even their marriages, to “search for their identity.” As if they might have misplaced it somewhere and are hoping it will turn up at a lost-and-found room somewhere. Such a quest might seem curious at best, foolish at worst. But in reality, our identity does mean a lot – especially in the business and professional world. We see this in tangible ways with quickly recognizable corporate logos such as Nike, McDonald’s, Mercedes and Ford, Google, or the New York Yankees. Years ago I was in Jamaica and found it surprising to discover items in a shop representing one of the popular U.S. racecar drivers at the time. Establishing a recognizable image is crucial in the competitive local, national and global markets. Carefully designed business cards help us to instantly convey who we are and what we do. After all, one of the first questions we often ask of people we have just met is, “What kind of work do you do?” In other words, “Who are you – what are you?” When a company develops a unique product, legal steps are taken to secure a patent or trademark so competitors cannot duplicate it. Enterprises are becoming extremely protective of their brand, whether it be an international, multi-faceted corporation like the Walt Disney Company, a prominent university, a retailing franchise, or even a well-known public figure. Bringing this closer to home, have you ever considered that, even if you do not own a business or head a company, you also have a “logo,” “trademark” and “brand” others use

to evaluate who you are and what you stand for? Recently I read this statement: “Your smile is your logo, your personality is your business card, how you leave others feeling after an experience with you becomes your trademark.” And we might add, “Whether others aspire to be like you is your brand.” What do you think people you work with regard as your “brand” or “trademark”? Do they look forward to doing business with you on a personal level? Although the Bible does not use the terms, it offers great insight into how to go about creating a highly marketable personal trademark or brand. Here are just three examples of its wisdom on this topic: The power of being others-oriented. Society often urges us to “look out for No.1 (ourselves),” but people who put others first are rare and extraordinary. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:3-4). The attraction of a generous spirit. There are many worthy causes to which we can give from our resources, but a sincerely generous, freely giving person can benefit others in many ways. “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). The impact of showing compassion. What is the best way to treat people? Simply, treat them as you would want to be treated if the roles were reversed. “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you” (Matthew 7:12).
