Place of Hope Expansion to Bring Affordable Housing By: Michael Demyan Faith-based foster care organization Place of Hope is set to expand their housing as six acres of land is being cleared on Boca Rio Road. Those six acres of land will partly be used to house teenagers in their foster care program once they reach 18 years of age. Once a child turns 18 and leaves foster care, they are suddenly on their own. With the construction of the building it will allow those teens to continue to have a place they can call home.

The Boca Raton Tribune, in partnership with the City of Boca Raton’s Office of Economic Development, recently launched a corporate appreciation luncheon that aims to recognize Boca based companies for their valuable contributions to the city’s corporate community. The Boca Raton Tribune will host the periodic corporate appreciation luncheons, and the City’s Office of Economic Development will select companies from various industries to be honored and recognized. At the luncheon, the company will receive the Boca Means Business award, which will be presented by Mayor Susan Haynie. corporate community,” said Mayor Susan Haynie. “Hosting an appreciation luncheon gives us the opportunity to recognize and thank our dedicated corporate executives for their hard work and valuable commitment to our City.” “We are thrilled to be working in partnership with the City’s Office of Economic Development,” said Boca Raton Tribune Publisher, Douglas Heizer. “This will be a very important luncheon for the business community, and we look forward to developing this award and future projects with the City.” Would you like to nominate a company for consideration? Please contact Jessica Del Vecchio, the City’s Economic Development manager at delvecchio@myboca.us. The Boca Raton Tribune will formally announce the selected corporate winner, once the process has been completed.

Once a child turns 18 and leaves foster care, they are suddenly on their own. With the construction of the building it will allow those teens to continue to have a place they can call home. The building will also be used for others in need of a home, such as homeless families with children and victims of human trafficking. Founding CEO of Place of Hope Charles Bender III said that they are striving to develop true affordable housing. Where is there affordable housing for those folks that are trying to get to the next level in life professionally and with their families? There isn’t any,” Bender said. “So that’s what we’re building. That’s why it’s so important.” The land sits north of Place of Hope’s Leighan and David Rinker Campus, which was donated to the organization in 2013 by The Haven. The new name for the campus was chosen two years later after board member Dr. Leighan Rinker and her husband David. Place of Hope also acquired the

empty acres of land that same year and now the organization will finally be able to build the necessary housing for those who need it. The project is expected to cost $1.3 million and Boca Helping Hands president Gary Peters donated a lead gift of $500,000 to Place of Hope through the Gary Peters Family Foundation. Now the goal is to find additional donors for the two-story building with eight twobedroom units. “We don’t like to operate with organizational debt, so we like to get everything paid for or at least committed prior to construction,” Bender said. To reach the $1.3 million cost, they are currently looking for seven more sponsors to donate $100,000 for one unit. Arthur Remillard, a longtime supporter of Boca Helping Hands, was the first to do so. Currently, construction is in early stages as the land is being cleared and work has begun on storm drainage, water and sewer systems. After the first building is constructed, plans do not stop there Place of Hope wishes to build three more on the land. “Once we have all the commitments on this first building and we’re able to then start with surety that it’s going to get built without any issues or shortfalls, then I think we can start to focus on the next one,” Bender said.

Boca Raton Regional Hospital Celebrates 50th Birthday
By: Bryanna Basilio
Boca Raton Regional Hospital celebrated its 50th birthday on Monday July 17. What originated from tragedy has saved countless of lives and offered the local community aid when needed. In 1962, Gloria and Robert Drummond’s two young children, Debbie and James Randall, were fatally poisoned. Both children died as a result of the nearest medical center being 30 minutes away. The Drummonds concluded if the medical center had been closer, their children’s lives may have been saved. The community rallied to build a hospital to ensure the nearest residents would have access to quality healthcare and life-saving emergency care whenever needed. The locals established the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League, a name in memoriam to the deceased children, to raise funds for the potential hospital. What began from bake sales to black-tie Balls, the community raised the funds to open the hospital in 1967, which became known as the “Miracle on Meadows Road.” Fifty years later, Boca Raton Regional Hospital remains one of the most advanced, tertiary medical centers in the state with 400 beds and more than 800 primary and specialty physicians on staff. The celebration took place in the Cafeteria and Bistro from 11:15 a.m. to
2 p.m. The event had a throwback theme and featured special menu items with 1967 prices, top hits from the years and “groovy” decorations. At 11:00 a.m., a commemorative photo of the Debbie-Rand Memorial Service League volunteers by the hospital’s pond was taken. The volunteers playing a vital role in the hospital’s inception. The hospital’s vision continues to be the “preeminent regional leader in healthcare delivery and the hospital of choice for patients, physicians, employees, and volunteers.” The vision is honest as Boca Raton Regional Hospital has a long list of achievements and awards. Boca Raton Regional Hospital was recognized in U.S. News and World Report’s 2016-2017 Best Hospitals listing as a Top Ranked Regional Hospital in the South Florida metropolitan area and the highest ranked hospital in Palm Beach County. Also, for the second year in a row, Boca Regional earned the 2016/2017 Consumer Choice Award by National Research Corporation (NRC). Boca Regional was the only hospital in Palm Beach County to earn such a distinction in 2014, Boca Regional Hospital was also the recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for 10 years running and was named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 by Healthgrades.

Boca West Foundation Provided Funding for Summer Camp for 1,250 Low Income Kids
Boca West Community Charitable Foundation, which provides grants and volunteers to 25 community nonprofit programs that serve local children, has provided funds, instructors, and volunteers for a variety of 2017 summer programs. The summer programs include a five-week tennis camp held at Boca West Country Club, a two-week golf program, also held at the Club, called Hook A Kid On Golf. FAU TOPS (Teaching Outstanding Performers), Summer Strings at Lynn University, Camp Wewa, Camp KAVOD, which serves disabled kids and Ball Stars Youth Camp, a basketball camp run by former NBA players. “Boca West Foundation’s camps and after school programs are fighting each day for the future of their kids against the onslaught of gangs in Palm Beach County,” Sheriff Rick Bradshaw said. More than 200 children from the Wayne Barton Study Center, Boys & Girls Club, Caridad Center and Florence Fuller Child Development Centers (East and West campuses) attended tennis camp at Boca West Country Club’s tennis center this summer. Each child received new tennis shoes, an outfit and enjoyed lunch each day. Hook A Kid On Golf, America’s most comprehensive national youth golf program, introduced 25 kids from the Wayne Barton Study Center and 25

kids from the Boys & Girls Club to golf. Kids from both organizations attended a weeklong golf camp at Boca West Country Club during July. Children received golf instruction from Boca West Country Club’s golf pros, a t-shirt and a hat. Lunch was provided by the club each day. “The sneakers, socks, shirts, hats and medals will be fondly remembered by the kids (and especially the delicious food) but it was the patience, caring and kindness on the part of the Boca West Country Club staff that will make a difference in many of the children’s lives,” Arthur Adler, chairman of the Boca West Charitable Foundation, said. Boca West Community Charitable Foundation also sponsored two music camp programs for children at risk. Because of this funding, the FAU Elementary Band was able to host 180 students from Lake Worth, Delray Beach and Canal Point and the Nat King Cole Generation Hope Summer Strings Program was able to send 200 students to spend a week with students of the Lynn University Philharmonia. Boca West’s contribution to Camp WeWa meant that 160 Kids from the Boys & Girls Club and SOS Children Villages were able to attend sleep away camp at Camp WeWa in Apopka, Florida. Each participant received swim goggles, a sleeping bag and duffle bag. The Foundation also covered the cost of transportation for the Boys & Girls Club.

Free Putting Green Now Open in Downtown Boca
Shoppers, diners, and visitors to Downtown Boca’s Mizner Park now have the opportunity to brush up on their short game at the new Putt’n on the Plaza. The 20×20, four holes putting green was installed this month and has accompanying putters and balls available to use for free. The green is located on the east side of Mizner Park just north of the center fountain. Mayor Susan Haynie brought the idea forward at last year’s City budget hearing and asked the City staff to allocate funding to develop the putting green. The idea is to encourage visitors of all ages to pick up a putter and play while enjoying a visit to Mizner Park. “I had a conversation with someone who had seen a similar concept in Colorado, and it sounded like an innova-
tive idea,” explained Mayor Haynie. “It’s an added attraction and a conversation piece, and it’s unique to our fun and active outdoor lifestyle in Boca Raton. We had space and decided we’d give it a try.” $10,000 was budgeted to create the green, but the construction, signage, and equipment, including the putters and balls, was completed for less. “We love seeing pictures of people having a great time in our Downtown and this will be another reason to post pictures of entertainment and family fun in Downtown Boca,” added Ruby Childers, Downtown Manager. “It’s a free perk for all to enjoy.” Boca Raton is a true full-service city offering five miles of beautiful beaches, cultural offerings, parks and recreational amenities, top rated schools, and universities and a thriving business community. The Old Way of Building More Road Space to Address Traffic is no Longer a Viable Option It is no secret that Boca Raton’s traffic is the pits – or at least – not far from it. The overbuilding-overcrowding angst, which is quickly affecting the quality of life throughout South Florida, is alive and well here and it is chipping away at the time we have to actually work, which mean less time to make money. It is also encroaching on the time we have to play and spend with family and loved ones. Traffic snarl is nothing new. “Traffic” is a drum that community activists have been beating since I was a reporter here in the mid 1990’s. For various reasons, our local politicians have capitalized on that. Some have suggested reducing car lanes on city streets, reconfiguring streets, adding bike lanes and widening sidewalks to promote pedestrian/bike/motoristfriendly neighborhoods. Then there were those slow-
growth candidates, who made it a campaign issue, advocating for tighter scrutiny of new development in the city. But the city now finds itself in a quandary, and the problem seems to be getting worse. In fact, it appears their efforts, although well intentioned, have been nothing more than a BandAid. Faced with ever-increasing traffic jams, city officials devised what they dubbed planned mobility districts. These mixed-use environments, considered the cutting edge of urban planning and design, were intended to attract younger workers, ‘empty nesters’, and even corporations to move and live, work, and play there without leaving their neighborhood. Time after time, we have heard developers - in making their spiels - and even some elected officials say they envision a city where residents in certain
neighborhoods, in particular the area known as Midtown Boca and the northwest corridor, can take the elevator downstairs to grocery shop, commute to work, go to dinner or pick up their children from school without getting into a car. They maintain that if even a few motorists change their travel behavior and choose alternatives to the car, they can reduce gridlock across the city. But no one is ditching their cars just yet. Instead of seeking alternatives to cars, government officials need to find other creative ways to address the traffic problem. But then again, we are used to relying on our elected leaders for solutions only to be left with broken promises. Perhaps it is time they lean on the developers or even invite members of the private sector to come up with some innovative solutions. Perhaps the responsibility to solve Boca Raton’s
transportation and mobility woes lies within our business community. It is obvious and clear that city officials will not say no to development despite the traffic congestion. That is because they foresee a robust healthy community- such as the stretch along Military Trail, between Clint Moore and Yamato roads – which means economic growth. As it stands right now, traffic congestion in Boca Raton will not get any better. And as experts predict it is just a matter time before the gridlock we are experiencing here mirrors that of Miami or even Los Angeles, which is considered the nation’s most congested city. If this issue is to be addressed anytime soon, the city must develop new mixed-use transit hubs throughout Boca Raton and reach out to the business community to come up with solutions.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Make Finishing Well Your Aim! When you come to the end of your earthly journey, what monuments shall you leave behind to impact others? How many altars shall you have erected to celebrate your own fruitfulness in your lifetime? Will you have real fruit to show or only leaves to display? These questions are raised because all human creatures are placed on earth for a variety of reasons, with each individual wired uniquely to fulfill specific purposes. To that end, three actions are expected of everyone: to make decisions, to make progress, and to make a difference. Any individual is capable of doing all three. Obviously, this is not what appears in the report card at the conclusion of a person’s earthly pilgrimage. Many people
may go through life in its entirety without being able to make any meaningful decision, and though several attempt it, some often do it wrongly. Quite a few are incapable of advancing in any direction, about anything. Moreover, making a difference is something which not many consider, and fewer yet make it real. All humans are called upon to travel the path assigned to each. But since humans are social creatures, their paths always intersect with those of others, so that experiences may be shared, examples may be emulated, and mutual encouragement exchanged. Any activity for which proper planning occurs at every step of the way has every reason to succeed. Yet, any period of
glory is not guaranteed to be maintained indefinitely; past achievements are not necessarily today’s reality, much less tomorrow’s performance. One needs to make decisive provisions for the continuing success of an enterprise, since one may be taken away from its production and command at any time. Many stop at peak performance and, then, reach a plateau from which a decline can easily emerge. In my lifetime I have repeatedly observed how many individuals quickly descended from hero to zero; they lacked staying power, many were devoid of a moral compass, with several also destitute of common sense, people skills, and the additional resources which can ensure victory at the finishing
line. Throughout life, gains do not necessarily define you, just as losses should not diminish anyone. The essential factor is to know who you are, with all the assets and limitations which every individual possesses; to recognize barriers not as the end of the line, but merely as signposts to better things still ahead if you proceed amidst all challenges! Plan to finish well, for anyone can. Just follow this sound advice I once read: “Do the very best you can with what you have, where you are now!” God will do the rest and ensure triumph at last!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Footwear manufacturer Shoes For Crews will relocate its headquarters to Boca Raton. The company will move its more than 200 headquarters employees into 37,000 square feet at the Boca Raton Innovation Campus. According to Dean Ngo, VP of global human resources for Shoes For Crews, their new offices are being designed and built from the ground up to foster better collaboration among teams and between departments, and provide a modern, welcoming workplace for each of our employees. Shoes For Crews makes slip-resistent footwear under multiple brands. In 2016, the company acquired the SureGrip Footwear line. Now it will be part of BRIC’s 1.7 million-square-foot campus, which was originally developed by IBM in the 1970s. Modernizing Medicine’s landing of $231 million in venture capital in May was among the top 10 deals in the country in the second quarter, according to the MoneyTree Report released this week. Modernizing Medicine previously announced the investment, which is from the New York-based private equity firm Warburg Pincus. The fast-growing company has developed an electronic medical records and data business. The investment “means continued growth — more hiring and increasing the innovation in specialties today,” said Dan Cane, co-founder and CEO. The company already has raised $87 million. Modernizing Medicine employs 550 people and now has three South Florida locations, its main headquarters in the Research Park at FAU. The People’s Choice Award went to ROK BRGR . A portion of proceeds from the Boca Burger Battle benefit PROPEL (People Reaching Out to Provide Education and Leadership), a non-profit located here in Boca Raton. I’m going to avoid hamburgers for the next short while but Russell Spadaccini outdid himself and Chief Judge, Rey De La Osa, was a tough task master (15 burgers in under 2 hrs) but I can’t wait for next year’s culinary masterpieces! Sunday, July 16th was a day of fun while raising funds and awareness for multiple sclerosis. Billed as a day to participate in the most exciting, fun, intense game of HOPSCOTCH ever to HOP into Boca Raton -- everyone (young and older) had a hot time in the Clive Daniel Home parking lot. sports FAU Women’s Soccer to Open 2017 Aliona Bolsova Joins FAU Women’s Season at FAU Stadium Tennis Team
For the second straight year, the Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team will lift the lid on their season at FAU Stadium, home of the football Owls, as they kick off the 2017 campaign on August 18 versus Florida at 7 p.m. A year ago, the women’s squad took a 2-1 win over Southern Utah in their first ever match at FAU Stadium. The team would go on to advance to the Conference USA tournament championship match and post a 12-8 overall record. Florida, a perennial national contender, won the SEC Tournament a year ago and was eliminated in the NCAA Soccer quarterfinals, finishing at 17-5-1. August 18 will mark the beginning of Head Coach Patrick Baker’s fifth year atop the women’s program. He has
led the team to back-to-back 12-win seasons and has high hopes for 2017. “We are excited to have the opportunity to open up the 2017 fall season in the football stadium for a second consecutive year,” he said. “It’s a special venue to host a soccer game and to be able to compete against an SEC power like the University of Florida is exciting. This year holds a lot of promise for our players and we are excited to begin the journey next month.” The Owls bring back seven returning starters and 22 returnees overall, to go along with six heralded newcomers for the upcoming season. The full slate of matches is nearly complete and will be announced very soon here on FAUSports. com.
The Boca Raton Tribune
Florida Atlantic University women’s tennis Head Coach Marcy Hora-Cava has added Aliona Bolsova to the Owls’ 2017 fall roster. Bolsova comes to FAU from Oklahoma State, where she posted 31 singles victories and 30 doubles wins, as a freshman. Prior to OSU, Bolsova ranked as high as No. 4 in the ITF world junior rankings and reached the quarterfinals in singles and doubles in the 2015 Australian Open Junior Championship. She earned multiple titles on the junior circuit, winning two doubles and two singles titles in 2015. Bolsova’s biggest win came in the junior masters in China where she defeated Jelena Ostapenko, who reached as high as No. 12 in the WTA singles rankings. "Aliona is a force to be reckoned with,” Hora-Cava said. “She is fierce on court in a humble way and talks with her racket. Aliona knows what she wants to do and where she wants to be and has
no problem putting in the work that it requires." In her freshman season at OSU, Bolsova Went 31-7 overall in singles, including a 20-4 dual mark competing primarily in the No. 3 position with five wins over ranked opponents including a straight-set win over No. 23 Anna Danilina and No. 31 Ingrid Neel of Florida. She was named All-Big 12 second team in doubles, ranking as high as No. 31 with partner Sofia Blanco. Bolsova was ranked No. 3 in the ITA Freshman/Newcomer rankings in the fall and was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team. “Aliona joins us with a 4.0 GPA and has played and beaten players in the top 50 in the world,” Hora-Cava said. "Aliona plans to get her education at FAU and then play on the professional tour." Bolsova comes from an athletic family, as both her grandparents and parents competed in multiple Olympic games in track and field.
