COMMUNITY Boca Raton Regional Hospital Gift Will Establish ‘Gangal Family Receives Stroke Gold Plus Quality Endowed Scholarship Fund’ Achievement Award Boca Raton Regional Hospital (BRRH) has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement award. The award recognizes the Hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, researchbased guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. The Hospital earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing mortality and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions. “Boca Raton Regional Hospital is dedicated to improving the quality of care for our stroke patients by implementing the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Stroke initiative,” said Frank D. Vrionis, MD, MPH, PhD, Director of the Marcus Neuroscience Institute at Boca Regional. “The tools and resources provided help us track and measure our success in meeting evidenced-based clinical guidelines developed to improve patient outcomes. This is a wonderful accomplishment for
the Marcus Neuroscience Institute.” Commenting further, Dr. Vrionis said, “However, it is important to emphasize that this honor also reflects the talent and expertise of our Emergency Department staff and local Emergency Medical Services professionals.” BRRH additionally received the association’s Target Stroke Honor Roll Elite PlusSM award. To qualify for this recognition, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clotbuster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. “We are pleased to recognize Boca Raton Regional Hospital for their commitment to stroke care,” said Eric E. Smith, M.D., National Chairman of the Get With The Guidelines Steering Committee and an Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. “Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through the Get With The Guidelines quality improvement initiative can often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates.” According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.

Florida Atlantic University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science has received a $500,000 gift from the Gangal family’s nonprofit foundation to establish an endowed scholarship fund for engineering graduate students with an emphasis on bioengineering research. The “Gangal Family Endowed Scholarship Fund” will support talented students as they prepare for professional careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). “There is a tremendous need to fill an increasing number of available jobs in engineering and high technology fields,” said Stella N. Batalama, Ph.D., dean of FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science. “This most generous gift we have received to establish the ‘Gangal Family Endowed Scholarship Fund’ will help us to develop a robust talent pipeline in this region and beyond to meet the needs of 21st century economy, where STEM-related jobs will be in high demand.” According to the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Florida’s labor demand in STEM fields has increased by more than 63 percent since 2010. Currently, there are more than 55,000 unfilled STEM jobs in Florida. That demand is felt throughout the state, including within the growing $5 billion modeling, simulation and training industry. While job growth through 2021 will be about 12 percent, data from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity shows STEM discipline growth projections at more than double that amount. Shiva and Sneh Lata Gangal established their nonprofit foundation in 2014 in Coconut Creek. Shiva Gangal served as CEO of Tri State Engineering & Management Company (1983 to 2001), an engineering design and construction company in West Virginia. He received

his master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, India, in 1957. Sneh Lata Gangal also served as secretary and treasurer of Tri State Engineering & Management Company from 1983 to 2001 and received her B.S. degree from Agra University in India. Their daughter, Anjali Gangal, is vice president of Branch Banking & Trust Co., operating two banking branches in Fort Lauderdale. “We are very excited to partner with FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science to support their talented students as well as their innovative research and engineering programs,” said Shiva Gangal. “In an increasingly complex world, we must ensure that Florida and the United States will be able to provide our STEM workforce and leaders with the knowledge and skills they need to help solve challenging problems that impact us globally.” FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science offers 21 degree programs on the Boca Raton campus. Master’s degree programs include bioengineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and ocean engineering. The College’s Ph.D. programs include computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and ocean engineering. In addition, the College offers special master’s degree offerings including an M.S. in information technology and management; an M.S. in civil engineering with a minor in business; an M.S. in computer engineering and computer science with a minor in business; an M.S. in mechanical engineering with a minor in business; and an M.S. in ocean engineering with a minor in business.

Palm Beach State College recent grad Vinicius Wagner is on an emotional high these days. Wagner recently learned he was one of only 13 students accepted to Princeton University as a transfer student this fall. Wagner wasn’t just accepted, he was also offered a full scholarship which will cover his tuition, housing and meals. The University, which had not admitted transfer students since 1990, opened the admission process for the students again last fall, particularly encouraging applications from students from low-income backgrounds, community college students and U.S. military veterans. Wagner, who was part of the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College and graduated with his Associate in Arts degree May 9, was among 1,492 transfer students who applied nationwide. “When I found out I was accepted, I was in complete disbelief,” Wagner said. “I had to re-check my application portal every few minutes to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. Eventually it hit me, and I felt that this journey I had been on for so many years had finally progressed to a whole new and exciting chapter.” Wagner was also in disbelief just a little over a month ago when he learned he was one of only 47 nationwide to earn
the 2018 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. He’ll use the scholarship, which provides him with up to $40,000 annually for a maximum of three years to complete his bachelor’s degree, for books and other costs. “I think the two biggest parts that stood out on my application was my commitment to community service at PBSC and the diversity of experience I would bring to the campus being a firstgeneration, low-income and immigrant student,” said Wagner who was born in Brazil and raised in Deerfield Beach, Fla. Wagner, who plans to study applied physics at Princeton, will be among transfer students who come from states including Florida, California, Pennsylvania, Texas, New York and Hawaii. In addition to Palm Beach State, students were chosen from community colleges including Miami Dade College in Florida, Fresno City College in California and Tompkins Cortland Community College in New York. Before Wagner starts his studies at Princeton, he will participate in a 10-week paid summer internship as part of the LIGO Summer Undergraduate Research Program at the California Institute of Technology.

Is America’s Mental Health Crisis the Culprit of Gun Violence? When a young while male stormed into a South Carolina church and opened fire killing nine black parishioners in a racist rage, his lawyers argued that he suffered from numerous mental disorders. The same reason was given when a deranged man gunned down 26 worshippers at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. And again, we heard the same refrain – the suspect was struggling with mental illness – after the school shootings in Kentucky, in Parkland and just last week in Texas. Another common thread is that after each mass shooting, politicians on both sides of the aisle have pointed the finger at mental illness. Come on now, such rhetoric has become too common following violent acts. How many times have we heard our elected officials say that guns are not the issue? Just like clockwork, every time there has been a gun-related mass killing they are quick to offer their prayers and declare that something must be done to find help for those struggling with mental illness. Then, nothing gets done. And then there’s another shooting.
Yet people keep dying and their thoughts and prayers aren’t solving anything. I often wonder why so many politicians and others try to make mental illness the root cause of these heinous acts of violence. I am not a medical expert. So as a journalist, whenever I need to find the answer to anything, I do the research. I ask the experts. My research has shown that only a very small percentage of violent acts are committed by people who are diagnosed with, or in treatment for, mental illness. Studies show that only four percent of criminal violence in the United States are caused by people with mental illness. Mental health experts have been trying for years to shed some light on this million dollar question. It is a fact that severe mental illnesses are found more often among mass murderers. Dr. Michael Stone, a Columbia University forensic psychiatrist who maintains a database of 350 mass shooters going back more than a century, found that about 22 percent - only 52 out of the
235 killers in the database – suffered from mental illness. But only about one in five – about 1 percent - are likely psychotic or delusional, Stone found. “The mentally ill should not bear the burden of being regarded as the ‘chief ’ perpetrators of mass murder,” Stone wrote in a 2015 article. I also discovered studies that suggest in reality that people with mental illness are rarely violent in an external sense. They are more likely to commit suicide rather than kill others if they have access to firearms. It soon became clear to me that the reason the mental health system fails to prevent mass shootings is that mental illness is rarely the cause of such violence. Simply put, if all potential mass shooters received psychiatric care, there is no reliable cure for angry young white men who harbor violent fantasies. Many who have spent their lives studying, diagnosing and treating mental illnesses say the laws intended to stop the mentally ill from buying guns are too narrow and easily sidestepped.
Which leaves me to think that the suspects are not the problem, the real pathology is access to guns. Therefore, I am left with no other theory than it is unfair and inaccurate to blame mental illness for the atrocities against random innocent strangers. On a more upbeat note, kudos to Delray Beach’s Assistant Director of Human Resources Duane D’Andrea who recently was elected to the Florida Public Employer Labor Relations Association board. FPELRA assists and represents cities in human resource hearings against employees. The U.S. Navy Sailor is a certified EEO investigator and a certified mediator. He also holds a Florida Certified Labor Relations Professional certification as well as his Professional in Human Resources and Society of Human Resources Certified Professional designations. Before coming to Delray Beach, he was a labor relations officer for CSX railroad.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Wisdom is More Than Accumulated Information A wise person is a well-informed individual. Yet, the mere accumulation of information does not necessarily constitute wisdom. You may go to school for many years and learn all kinds of important and legitimate facts; you may devour important books and benefit from what you find in them. But wisdom is acquired differently and it entails other factors! Throughout my years I’ve encountered several persons who had an impressive academic baggage, but by observing their life and the decisions they often made, it was most obvious that they were devoid of true wisdom!
By the same token, I’ve also met quite a few people who had no academic credentials; some had not even finished elementary school. Nevertheless, in their dealings, in their demeanor, and by the results of many of their transactions, they demonstrated what wisdom entails. Ultimately, wisdom is the preferred path one should follow, the most important possession for one to acquire. It is reached through careful thinking, followed by sound choices led by that process. It entails gains as well as losses, additions but also subtractions! One cannot accept whatever is said or
written without first analyzing those ideas through a pre-established grid. Wisdom is reached by intelligent comparisons and contrasts; it demands solid discernment between a variety of options; it can never be attained without a prior understanding of the potential consequences of every action taken! Wisdom needs not to be limited to a small segment of the human race. It is available to any person regardless of age, anyone who seeks it diligently throughout life, and is eager to incorporate it in all the decision-making processes, and in every aspect of one’s daily living, in things
great or small! The Author of Life is also the Giver of Wisdom which He does not deny to anyone who diligently seeks it from Him. Like most products we utilize, it must be followed in accordance with the prescriptions offered, lest it ceases from being wisdom. It enables its practitioner to view life more realistically and to arrive at conclusions never before imagined. Among all credentials anyone could ever display, wisdom is the most essential and absolutely necessary!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

AACY luncheon at Broken Sound Country Club

The Importance of a Unique Mission When you go to work, does having a sense of mission – an underlying purpose – factor into how much you enjoy what you do? An article in Wall Street Journal, a respected business periodical, discussed the increasing focus corporations are now putting on their employees’ need for a sense of purpose in their work. For many of them, having a job to perform and earning a regular paycheck is not sufficient – they also want to feel their work has deeper meaning. This concern is shared by many people as they evaluate their investment options. For instance, Factiva, an online business information and research tool, discovered the words “mission” “higher purpose,” or “changing the world” were discussed 3,243 times by investors with their financial advisors on recorded phone calls in 2014, compared to only 2,318 times five years before. One reason for this significant surge in interest is generational. There is a strong emphasis among many men and women in the so-called “millennial generation” who want to work somewhere that is making a difference in the world. They want their vocations – and the companies that employ them – to contribute positively to people that use their products and services, communities where they are located, and to the world at large. Many businesses and organizations already have statements of mission, vision and values, so they can readily address the desire for a greater purpose that many of their workers and prospective employees have. A well-articulated mission statement helps an individual to quickly discern whether a company’s overriding purpose and their own are in alignment.
For those of us that see our work as an expression of our spiritual convictions, this also makes a lot of sense. The Bible teaches vocational pursuits are part of God’s calling and His plan for us to participate in His creation constructively. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). In other words, the gifts and talents we possess are not arbitrary, but divinely given for us to participate in God’s work locally and globally. As employers, executives and managers, one of the ways we can best serve those working under our direction is to communicate how much we value the ways God has designed them and our business for His unique purposes. This can also serve as a good recruiting tool, showing job seekers that the company has an understanding of its role in society and how individual members of the team can contribute toward achieving that purpose. People who find meaning in their work and pursue excellence in all they do typically find their jobs more fulfilling and rewarding, and not just in terms of compensation. And that dedication deserves genuine recognition and appreciation. As Proverbs 22:29 states, “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.” When workers feel they are “on a mission,” undertaking tasks and responsibilities that transcend mere deadlines and quotas, they become inspired, highly motivated and more productive. The company benefits as well, making it a win-win situation for everyone.

sible for students.” Vallejo was a member of a local ASPIRA club in New York during high school. “ASPIRA counselors gave me options, told me I was smart and helped me develop my leadership skills,” said Vallejo, who eventually became the club president during her senior year. After high school, Vallejo worked at ASPIRA as a college advisor in Manhattan and has since served on many state and local boards. Eight years ago, she created the first PBSC ASPIRA Club in Lake Worth. According to her, it was the first collegiate ASPIRA club in the nation. The new scholarship recipients will join the club this fall. They were awarded at a ceremony held earlier this month. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be members of a high school or PBSC ASPIRA club, write an essay, and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher, among others. Scholarship funds are raised by local community donors, particularly Latino, and by local ASPIRA board members.

SPORTS Boca Raton FC’s Offense Kicked Into Gear in 3-1 Victory at Home
Boca Raton Football Club was able to close out a three-game homestand on a positive note this weekend as the boys in blue defeated Naples United FC at home in a classic Mud Bowl matchup at Atlantic High School on Saturday evening 3-1. The game was the first win for Boca Raton this season, giving Boca Raton FC a much-needed three points. The game started with Boca Raton showing off their offense, as they keep the ball deep in Naples territory throughout most of the first half. Boca Raton was really trying for their first goal of the game, as they recorded four shots on goal in the first half. In the 43rd minute of the game, Boca Raton finally found the breakthrough when midfielder Gabriel Diniz took the ball down the right side of the field and sent a beautiful cross to Alex Norton who was able to tap it in for his first goal of the season. Returning from the half both teams kept an even possession of the ball. It wasn’t until the 63rd minute when Matheus Ayrolla scored the second goal of the game and his first of the season. “Going into tonight’s game we
knew the weather was against us,” said Ayrolla. “We train for these situations to be prepared. One of my main functions on this team is to score goals, so it came naturally.” The Boca Raton offense kept up the momentum recording four more shots on goal. In the 73rd minute, Naples United gave up a penalty kick, which captain Carlos Meneses notched the 3rd goal of the game, his second of the season. Naples amped up their offense and was able to record five shots on goal which were effectively stopped by the stellar play of goalkeeper Michael Stone. Despite Stone’s heroics, Naples was able to get one goal back late in the match. “I credit the team in front of me for tonight’s game, they played very offensively which helped me perform my job effectively,” said Stone after the match. “Without them, we wouldn’t have been able to score 3 goals and get out first win of the season.” Boca Raton will now hit the road for the first time this season as they take on Storm FC this weekend at Central Broward Regional Park at 5:30 pm.
Lynn Baseball’s Dorrian Lands NCBWA First Team All-America Honors
On the same day in which he garnered his third All-Region selection of the season, Lynn University baseball senior Patrick Dorrian was named as a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association First Team All-America at shortstop. This marks the first time in his career Dorrian has been recognized as an All-America selection and the third year in a row in which Lynn has had an NCBWA All-America selection. Tyler Curtis earned NCBWA Second Team AllAmerica honors a season ago, while John Silviano was named NCBWA First Team All-America in 2016. Dorrian becomes the ninth player in program history to be named an All-American by the organization. A three-time All-Region selection this spring, the Kingston, New York, native finished this season ranked inside the SSC’s top-five in batting average (.394), slugging percentage (.798), hits (74), on-base percentage (.471), runs batted in (57), triples (6) and home runs (17). He led the SSC with 160 assists in the
field while posting a .943 fielding percentage. He finished the year ranked top-10 in the nation in slugging percentage and total bases (150) while ranking top-25 in home runs and triples. The shortstop paced the Blue and White’s offense all season long, reaching base via hit, walk or hit-bypitch in each of his 49 games played. He ended the 2017 season with a seven-game reached-base streak, giving him a total of 56 consecutive games reaching base safely—the longest streak on record in the SSC’s illustrious history. He finished his career on Lynn’s all-time leaderboards in batting average (.382, fifth), triples (8, fifth), home runs (26, seventh), slugging percentage (.685, second), on-base percentage (.459, eighth) and assists (306, seventh). Delta State’s Zack Shannon was named NCBWA Player of the Year, while LeMoyne’s Josiah Gray was named Pitcher of the Year. Chris Ramirez of Illinois Springfield was tabbed as the NCBWA Coach of the Year.

FAU’s Tyler Frank win C-USA Defensive Player of the Year
For the second time in three years, a Florida Atlantic University junior shortstop is Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year, as Tyler Frank has earned this year’s honor, and he and four of his teammates were voted All-C-USA, in balloting results released by the league on Tuesday. Following in the footsteps of C.J. Chatham in 2016, Frank was voted by coaches, sports information directors and media as 2018 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year. Frank has been the cornerstone of the Owls' defense as shortstop for almost every possible inning of the last two years. He shows tremendous range and a strong and accurate arm, and ranks eighth in C-USA in assists (122) and within the top 20 (and just outside the top 15 excluding 1B) in double plays. Frank repeats as a member of CUSA’s First Team All-Conference, joining three other Owls voted as such for the first time in their FAU career. The senior duo of outfielder David Miranda and starting pitcher Jake Miednik, along with junior closer Zach Schneider, combine with Frank to make up the most First Teamers for any C-USA school (Southern Miss was the only other team with more than two, notching three). Senior relief pitcher Drew Peden garnered a Second Team nod, also the first league honor of his FAU career. The five total Owls recognized match Charlotte and Louisiana Tech for most among schools.
Miranda and Frank make up the team’s top two hitters in batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, hits, runs and doubles, and have combined for 20 home runs (Frank 11 and Miranda nine) and 71 runs batted in. Miranda has team highs of .319, 42 RBI and 66 hits. Frank bats .318 and leads the way with 55 runs scored, 19 doubles, 42 walks, and OBP and slugging of .452 and .587, respectively. Miednik ranks among the league leaders with a 7-1 record, a 3.06 ERA, 79 strikeouts and a .224 opposing batting average. The team is 10-1 in games he starts. Behind him, Schneider leads all C-USA hurlers with 13 saves, while also pitching to a 5-1 mark and a 2.01 ERA. Combining with Schneider for arguably the best 1-2 punch in any C-USA bullpen, Peden actually ties for the league lead in wins, holding an 8-1 record, and is second among all pitchers with 29 appearances. The four First Team members is the most FAU has had since joining C-USA, and equals the most merited in any year (also in 1999, 2002 and 2004, all while members of the Atlantic Sun). Only one other time as a C-USA member have they had as many as five players recognized, with two First Teamers and three Second Team in 2015. The Owls kick off postseason play on Wednesday, opening up the 2018 C-USA Championship against FIU, with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. Eastern.
