and Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s (BRRH) Marcus Neuroscience Institute are taking treatment options to the next level. Jang-Yen (John) Wu, Ph.D., distinguished professor of biomedical science in FAU’s Schmidt College of Medicine, and Brian Snelling, M.D., chief of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery and medical director of the Marilyn and Stanley Barry Center for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute and BRRH, have joined forces to combine a breakthrough interventional procedure for stroke with a novel drug compound that has neuroprotective properties. • Even though Palm Beach County is known for its vast wealth, one in six residents do not know where their next meal will come from according to the Palm Beach County Food Bank. Since the majority of Palm Beach State College students are residents of the county, they too may be struggling to get enough to eat. To help ensure they have this basic need met, the College has relocated and expanded its food pantry, now called Panther’s Pantry. • Officials at Boca Raton Regional Hospital today announced the appointment of KerryAnn McDonald, MD, to the medical staff of the Christine E. They are free and open to the public and feature artwork created by PBSC students and community artists.

COMMUNITY Teens Earn PBA Credit in Rigorous Leadership Program High school students who are leaders in their communities recently graduated from the Solomon Leadership Program, earning University credit. Twenty-two of the 29 teenagers who graduated from the program April 9 completed collegiate-level coursework to earn a credit from the values-based leadership program, said Catherine T. MacArthur School of Leadership Dean Dr. Craig Domeck. This is the first year the program offered PBA credit. The Solomon Leadership Program is a partnership of The Sosnow Foundation and the Palm Beach Synagogue. It is named after the biblical King Solomon, famous for his wisdom. The program is informed by moral values and the significant leadership experiences of mentors, among them former U.S. Ambassador to Denmark Stuart Bernstein, 15th Judicial Circuit Court Judge Lisa Small, military leaders, business executives, doctors and investors. In fall 2017, the program’s cochair Lawrence Sosnow enlisted Dr. Art Johnson, professor of leadership and or-

ganizational development, to evaluate the curriculum. The lessons are now focused around eight pillars of leadership — character, vision, communication, tolerance, persistence, empowerment, strategy and judgment. Twice a month from November to March, students met with their mentors and discussed the pillars of leadership. Guest speakers included Nancy Brinker, founder and chair of global strategy of the Susan G. Komen Foundation; Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg and Wenfred Dorsey ’06, reentry program supervisor for The Lord’s Place. Students seeking college credit completed Johnson’s “Foundational Values in Leadership” course by watching videos, taking quizzes and writing a final paper, Domeck said. The competitive program is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. “They have to be proven leaders,” Domeck said. “They have to be leading already as well as being a good student.”

FAU Graduates First Doctor Of Social Work Class

Florida Atlantic University’s first class of Doctor of Social Work (DSW) graduates from the Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work within the College for Design and Social Inquiry recently earned their degrees. The DSW degree is the first program of its kind to be offered in the state of Florida. The first cohort consisted of Phoenix Adams, Karen Baldwin, JaimeLee Conner, Brandy Hughey, Taryn Jaramillo, Leslie Meskin, and Heather Sandala. “We have been privileged to have such an amazing first Doctor of Social Work cohort,” said Naelys Luna, Ph.D., director of the Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work. “They have lit the torch that will be carried into our program’s bright future for years to come. I couldn’t be prouder to have these talented professionals representing our school as they begin their practice as clinical scholars, impacting the lives of so many people and transforming our community.” The DSW Program prepares graduates for leadership roles in advanced clinical practice, clinical

supervision, social work education, and practice-oriented research and evaluation. “I am extremely proud of the graduating cohort,” said Manny González, Ph.D., doctoral program coordinator and associate professor in the Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work. “Each of the seven graduating students have been prepared to assume the role of a clinical scholar and positions of leadership in advanced clinical practice, clinical supervision, social work education and practice-oriented research. They are well equipped to develop and disseminate knowledge aimed at promoting the biological, psychological and social well-being of individuals, families and groups within an environmental context.” In November 2015, the Florida Board of Governors approved FAU’s Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work to begin to offer the degree of Doctor of Social Work. The first cohort started in fall 2016. For more information on FAU’s Phyllis and Harvey Sandler School of Social Work, visit cdsi.fau. edu/ssw. Heizer Media Group

Local Girls Scouts Become Cyber Security Champions Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida partnered with Champion Solutions Group, a national IT solutions firm headquartered in Boca Raton, to bring area Girl Scouts between kindergarten and twelfth grade a brand new program to learn about and earn new STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) badges for cyber security. Champion Solutions Group gave $10,000 as the presenting sponsor to support the program. Nearly 200 Girl Scouts attended Cyber Security Champions on May 4 in Deerfield Beach where they were led in activities by the cyber security experts of Champion Solutions Group and their partners. The girls gained new essential skills to help combat cyber crime and parents also had a chance to participate in a parent panel where they were shown ways to keep their children safe while using devices connected to the internet. From malware to phishing, participants learned different terms related to cyber security and how to avoid falling for online schemes. They also learned about the internet and how computers talk to each other, what information to share and what to keep private, how to spot and avoid online

dangers, who to trust online, and what to do if they see something suspicious. Girls in grades seven through twelve also had a unique opportunity to hear from females working in the cyber security field and explore various career options in cyber security and what educational steps to take in order to find themselves in one of these lucrative careers. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that by 2021, there will be 3.5 million jobs in cyber security, but not enough people with the right expertise to fill them. With cyber crime on the rise and a shortage of a knowledgeable workforce to fill cyber security related positions, this program could very well help feed the pipeline of future female internet security officers. Females are underrepresented in STEM fields in general, and that is especially the case for the cyber security field which is heavily dominated by males. This program directly addressed this issue and provided girls the space to build confidence in their technology skills and thus increase their interest in pursuing a cyber security career.

my work.” Thanks to the generosity of local artist and longtime Council supporter Dina Baker, the Dina Baker Fund for Mature Female Artists grants $10,000 annually to a female artist age 60 or older with financial need and recognizable merit. The artist may use funds for professional development, arts-related exhibitions, equipment and supplies, healthcare costs or basic living expenses. Each award recipient is also granted a solo exhibition in the Cultural Council’s gallery. Rodrigues’ solo exhibition, “From One to Another”, is a retrospective on her path to abstraction—beginning with framed figures on canvas before evolving into a detonation of form and color on a loose, tapestry-like display. The exhibition can be viewed at the Cultural Council through Saturday, June 1. Visit palmbeachculture.com/ exhibitions for more information. www.bocaratontribune.com

Leader with Reputation for Improving Student Outcome Promoted to Oversee all Academics in County Schools After more than a year without a fulltime academic chief, the School District of Palm Beach County has promoted a longtime expert in improving schools to the position. Glenda Sheffield, south instructional superintendent for secondary schools, was recently named to the position, which was held by Keith Oswald, who was wearing two hats as deputy superintendent and chief academic officer. The School Board members are expected to approve her appointment at their June meeting. In her new position as chief academic officer, Sheffield will be responsible for creating goals for schools, training and recruiting teachers and principals, and overseeing academic strategy to meet state academic requirements. She will report directly to the superintendent. She is seasoned, experienced and well qualified having served in various capacities as teacher, assistant principal, and principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels. As principal, Sheffield successfully closed the achievement gap with

low performing students at all three levels. She also increased the high school graduation rate from 82 percent to 89.9 percent within a four year period. Sheffield previously was served as principal of William T. Dwyer High School in Jupiter, H.L. Watkins Middle School in suburban Palm Beach Gardens, and Bethune Elementary in Riviera Beach. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Administration from Voorhees College, a private, historically black college in Denmark, South Carolina; a Master of Education in Business Education from Bowling Green State University, a large, public research university in Ohio, and an Educational Specialist in Educational Leadership and Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. She also is a former participant of the Harvard University Principal Leadership Academy. I have observed Doc’s leadership since her days at Dwyer and in speaking with people who know her well, it is evident that she thrives

on new opportunities and is a transformational leader who has a deep understanding of effective classroom teaching, student-focused instruction, and school leadership that will help our students and educators succeed.

Thank a Cop This Week for Keeping Everyone Safe, Secure If you take notice recently, you will see that your local police officer or sheriff ’s deputy is wearing a black and blue band over his or her badge. That’s because, this week, law enforcement officers are honoring their comrades who have died or who have been disabled in the line of duty. Earlier this week, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund formally enshrined the names of 371 law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty — including two from Delray Beach Police Department, Officer John Kennedy and

Sergeant Adam Rosenthal — during the 31st Annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall. Last year 158 officers were killed in the line of duty. To date this year, 42 made the sacrifice. You can do your part to “Show Appreciation to a Cop” by sending the chief of police a letter detailing how one of his officers helped you. You may also pick up the tab for an officer dining at the restaurant with you. Let the waiter know your desire, without letting the officer know. Also, please remember their families and loved ones who have carried on after their sacrifice. Whatever you do, make sure you reach out to the men and women who proudly wear the badge to show your sincere gratitude and appreciation sometime this week. Our law enforcement officers will and have consistently acted on our behalf regardless of great peril and hazard to themselves. We enjoy a level of peace, safety and freedom that other nations are rightfully envious of as our police enforce our laws.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Misery Doesn’t Love Uninvited Company! There are people who accept certain popular proverbs and treat them as pure truth. Such truisms have much that is correct in them, though one should not observe their proposals to the fullest, most of the time. Life cannot be lived by clichés but only by solid, proven realities! One common phrase, often heard, is that “misery loves company.” Depending on how one interprets that, it may be true in some ways. Yet, a manner of providing a better match to such statement is to affirm that “misery loves assistance.” Not excessive assistance, which could issue into dependence, or one that for the same reason would offer far more than it can be

May 17 - May 23, 2019

beneficial. Furthermore, it doesn’t entail supplying something every time one is confronted with the need which other persons present. Even in doing good, moderation must be shown; there’s such a thing as “Toxic Charity” to quote the title of an excellent book written by Robert D. Lupton. Throughout my years of involvement with some helping professions, I’ve come to the conclusion that there can be such a thing as “Invasive Service” when far too much is literally forced on a person which manifests destitution of some kind, without a proper understanding of what is truly paramount! It’s important to be observant of needs all

around us. Yet, this does not necessitate our personal participation all the time. I’ve met people who choose anonymity in times of need, not because they are ashamed of what they lack, but on account of their preference for privacy and time for rest and recovery. As author Lupton correctly pondered, “not all charity is good charity.” Some well-intentioned individuals visit people in hospitals forgetting the needs of the patient and thinking more of the time it took them to get there, besides other personal factors. A hospital call is for the sake of the patient and not that of the visitor. An excess of food prepared for someone who lost a loved one, or who just

www.bocaratontribune.com

returned home following surgery, can easily be wasted time and food, unless the diet limitations, and preferences of the patient are determined ahead of time. Be always ready to serve; be ever willing to do something which can positively affect another life. But, most of all, ascertain first what is truly needed and, then, without excess, do what can truly help. Remember that there are varieties of needs, multiple types of responses to be offered, and unique personalities reacting in accordance with personal predilections which should not be violated! Determine these and other factors before you force anything on anyone!

Broadway Ziegfield Follies Luncheon

I joined the dance group Broadway Ziegfield Follies for their monthly luncheon at the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club where we were entertained by Fan Dancer, Betsy Wickard and Singer, Cathy Rollins followed by a lovely Prime Rib luncheon.

The World Needs More Cowboys Recently I watched a brief promotional video produced by the University of Wyoming called, “The World Needs More Cowboys.” I have never been a cowboy, but as I reviewed the video, its message seemed very much on point. The video asks, “Restless curiosity – whatever happened to that? When did we stop thinking up new questions and daring to chase down their answers? Should we blindly follow predetermined paths when they never take us anywhere new?…when there’s still so much to explore off the beaten trail? The world needs more wonder, more outside thinkers hungry for a challenge. The world needs more cowboys…. It’s the spirit of the underdog, the trailblazer, the kind of spirit that longs for something to prove….” I am not advocating for the university; I have never even been to Wyoming. But this video suggests something important, and not just for education. As we view our roles – our callings – as business and professional people, I think we would do well to embody this “cowboy spirit.” Because the cowboy image seems to fit regardless of culture, ethnicity, gender or tradition. Looking at the life of Jesus Christ and His followers, as presented in the Bible, we find that while they were fishermen, tradesmen, even tax collectors, they all shared a bit of this “cowboy” approach to life. Jesus was commanding them to go against the flow of culture and prevailing religion, staking claim to new, uncharted territory. Among the things Jesus did was declare freedom from legalistic behavior; simplified the guiding principles for everyday living; gave unprecedented dignity and appreciation for women; and showed a revolutionary

new way for establishing a growing, practical relationship with God. In today’s marketplace, especially those of us who profess faith in Christ and strive to follow Him, we also can cultivate a cowboy mentality of curiosity, boldness, innovation and eagerness for a challenge. Here are some examples: Beware of the beaten path. The courses of culture and peer pressure often push us in the direction most others are taking, but Jesus urged choosing another way. “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it”(Matthew 7:14). Choose a determined allegiance. Today, virtues like loyalty and commitment are often dismissed. But just as cowboys understand who they are and what they do, avoiding anything that might distract, we too must focus on who we are and why God has us here: “…choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”(Joshua 24:15). Dare to be different.Every day we are tempted to “conform to the pattern of this world” as Romans 12:2 states it, but as ambassadors for Jesus Christ we are called to be different, to the extent that our lives and approaches to work raise questions in the minds of others: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect”(1 Peter 3:15).

Recently, select students from Boca Raton High School visited the Boca Raton Airport. The students were Navy JROTC aviation cadets who have taken an aviation class and have shown an interest in the aviation industry. During the tour, the students learned about the Airport’s history, its role in the community and the various responsibilities of staff members. Additionally, the students

explored the airfield and interacted with Fixed Base Operators (FBOs), mechanics, air traffic controllers, airport administrators and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility staff. This gave them a glimpse of what daily operations are like at a general aviation facility while exposing them to the numerous career options that are available in aviation, other than being a pilot or flight attendant.

Boca Raton Regional Hospital Physicians Recognized as Top Doctors For the seventh year in a row, Boca Raton Regional Hospital has had the most primary-affiliated physicians of any hospital in Palm Beach County recognized as “Top Doctors” by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. and surpassed all other institutions combined. The research firm specializes in providing consumers with information about the nation’s best doctors and hospitals. The selection process for Top Doctors listing begins with peer recognition through surveys that are given out to thousands of physicians and other healthcare leaders nationwide. They are asked to identify who they believe are highly skilled, exceptional doctors. Castle Connolly then reviews

the peer-recommended list for standards, including medical education, training, board certifications, hospital appointments, administrative posts, professional achievements and malpractice and disciplinary history. The complete list of Boca Regional physicians who made the latest listing of “Top Doctors” can be viewed on Castle Connolly’s website at castleconnolly.com. “While Boca Regional’s entire medical staff is known for its clinical excellence and commitment to improving the lives of our patients, we salute these particular physicians on such a notable accolade,” said Jerry Fedele, President and CEO of Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

Florida Atlantic University’s Cane Institute for Advanced Technologies within A.D. Henderson University School and FAU High School in partnership with the College of Engineering and Computer Science and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science recently hosted the MATE ROV Regional Competition, the second largest underwater robotics competition in the world. A.D. Henderson University School placed first and second place in the region for engineering presentations. “Team Noctis” consisted of Arman Alexis, Marcel Eugene and Aislyn Leach and placed third overall. “It was incredible to see so many students competing at the FAU Cane Institute MATE ROV Tournament,” said Sherry Bees, principal/director of A.D. Henderson and FAU High School. “Providing a space for this level of competition to flourish in Florida is one of the

main goals of The Cane Institute. Watching our middle school team participate and be competitive against students from across the state shows their dedication and the Institute’s passion for advancing STEM education in Florida and throughout the Nation.” The MATE ROV Competition, sponsored by Resolve Marine, required students to apply math, electronics, engineering and physics skills from the classroom toward solving problems based on real-world workplace scenarios. More than 40 teams and 225 middle and high school students from all over the state of Florida participated in the competition. The Cane Institute for Advanced Technologies within A.D. Henderson and FAU High was established last year after a $1 million gift from Daniel and Debra Cane.

We can’t wait to begin working with this new class of entrepreneurial leaders.” In addition to the investment awards received by the top third of the incoming class, all Venture Class 7 winners join a robust community of fellow entrepreneurs, mentors, investors, instructors, and top-level support professionals. Additionally, they will complete a 12-session course of instruction focused on specialized topics tied to Stanford’s Lean LaunchPad curriculum. FAU Catcher Becomes Semifinalist Carroll, Seltzer Named to All-SSC for National Catching Award Teams

With the list whittled down from 91 to a batch of only 14, the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award list of semifinalists, announced Friday, includes Florida Atlantic University junior backstop Pedro Pages. Pages continues to be an offensive leader and true top defender for the Owls. In addition to batting .311, he has shown increased patience at the plate, leading the team with a .434 onbase percentage (10th in Conference USA). He exceeded his career high in walks in the first game of April, and has more this season – 38, third-highest in C-USA – than in his first two combined. The Doral, Florida, native also has eight doubles, six home runs and 40 RBI. His defensive skill is cemented by throwing out 42.5% of baserunners (17 of 40),

plus three pickoffs, while committing only two fielding errors in 384 chances towards a .992 fielding percentage behind the plate. Here is the semifinalist list in its entirety: Patrick Bailey, sophomore, N.C. State Philip Clarke, sophomore, Vanderbilt Logan Driscoll, junior, George Mason Nick Kahle, junior, Washington Justin Kunz, senior, Gardner-Webb Shea Langeliers, junior, Baylor Korey Lee, junior, California Kyle McCann, junior, Georgia Tech Pedro Pages, junior, Florida Atlantic Adley Rutschman, junior, Oregon State Dustin Skelton, junior, Mississippi State Taylor Smith, freshman, Incarnate Word Eric Yang, junior, UC Santa Barbara Harris Yett, senior, Charlotte

Palm Beach Atlantic baseball outfielder Brandon Seltzer and starting pitcher Mitchell Carroll have been named to the All-Sunshine State Conference Second Team, as the conference awards were announced by the league office on Wednesday. 2019 was the second season in which PBA was a full member of the SSC, as the Sailfish finished 14-16 in league play. Seltzer batted .335 on the season and led the Sailfish with 10 home runs and 43 RBI. The junior stole 10 bases on the year and

also scored 38 runs. Carroll was the Friday night starter for the ‘Fish this season, and posted a 6-4 record with a 3.49 earned run average. The senior struck out 71 batters in 77.1 innings and limited opponents to a .219 batting average.
