Community McDelivery Now Available in Boca Area Youngsters to Have a Raton Summer Camping Experience of a Lifetime
By: Michael Demyan OutsideBoca Raton customers who are craving a Big Mac or some fries but don’t want to leave the comfort of their home no longer have to worry. McDonalds can now be delivered with the simple touch of a button through UberEATS. To have the food delivered, users will need to download the UberEATS app and log in with their Uber account. From there, they can select almost anything on the McDonald’s menu to be brought to their doorstep for an extra fee. The only items that are not available to be delivered are soft serve ice cream cones and orders from the McPick2 menu. The McDelivery service first started in Miami-Dade and Broward counties earlier this year and now that service will be expanding to seven locations in Boca Raton, along with other select cities across the country. UberEATS South Florida General Manager J.P. Restrepo is excited about the expansion and believes Boca Raton residents will be as well. “With UberEATS, you can get the food you want, where you want it,
delivered at Uber speed,” he said. “We’re thrilled to partner with McDonald’s to give fans easy access to their McDonald’s favorites. People in Boca Raton search the UberEATS app often, so we’re excited to expand our reach and deliver what they’ve been craving.” McDelivery’s expansion to Boca Raton continues the fast food chain’s push for convenience in the city. The McDonald’s in the Fifth Avenue Shoppes Plaza recently added touch screen kiosks inside the restaurant to improve wait times. Customers are able to customize their order at the self-serve kiosk and have their food delivered to their table. McDonald’s will not be stopping there, as they are expected to be starting mobile order for pick up by the end of the year. Until then, those in Boca Raton will be able to take advantage of the brand new McDelivery service, which Boca Raton McDonald’s owner Brent Upchurch thinks is a great way to keep his customers happy. “We are excited to bring a new level of convenience and personal service to our customers in Boca Raton with UberEATS,” he said. “McDelivery on UberEATS is a win-win for our customers. Whether they are home, the office, or somewhere in between, McDelivery provides McDonald’s fans more ways to enjoy their favorite menu items during the day and into the evening and early morning hours.”
By CRA News Service Eight local children left City Hall early Sunday morning for a week at the Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla, where they are having an experience of a lifetime. “They have no idea what is awaiting them,” Jamael Stewart, assistant Community Improvement Director, said as they drove off. “Along with learning new skills and making new friends, they are going to learn valuable life lessons, such as how to be responsible, solve problems, and how to get along with others in a community setting.” While the focus is on fun and character-building, the campers – who do not have access to any electronic devices - are participating in a range of activities including archery, tennis, football, kickball, horseshoe golf, arts & crafts, capture the flag and soccer. The camp, located on 385 acres of hills, forests, lakes and a lot of open space, is about an hour and a half from Gainesville. It also has lakes where the children can paddleboard, canoe and catch and release largemouth bass, a 15,000- square-foot pavilion, gymnasium with three full length basketball courts and an aquatic complex. However, the real attraction for many kids is the ropes challenge course with both high and low ropes. College students, who are seen as rock stars, create a “kid experience to really mold the kids” while they are there, camp director Nick Miller said. “On the back end, we make sure they’re trying,” Miller said. “We never force them. We try to encourage them. Once they gained that confidence, it’s our job to make sure they succeed.”
www.bocaratontribune.com
While the kids are having a blast, the counselors, who give them lots of face-to-face time, make sure they are also becoming more self-confident, selfreliant, responsible and caring people, organizers said. “We hope they leave with an expanded sense of confidence, a very solid self confidence in themselves that they can achieve it,” Miller said. He also hopes they will return with a sense of civic duty, compassion for others and social skills. The local Elks paid $2,500 for each child to attend and Stewart selected them based on their conduct and community involvement. Several parents said they plan to enjoy some quite time without the kids. “I am going to miss them but we are looking forward to peace and quiet,” said Felix Rosales, whose two children are on the trip. The camp opened in 1991 as a project of the Florida State Elks Association. Each of the camp’s 52 modern cabins has air conditioning, heat, personal storage facilities and restrooms with hot showers Reyly Rosales, 11, said he went to Washington as a Safety Patrol in the fourth grade but it is his sister, 10-yearold Hanay’s first time away from home. Before the pair boarded the 15-passenger van before daybreak Sunday, their mom kissed and told them she loves them. Stewart will travel back to the Florida Elks Youth Camp Saturday morning to pick up the children and bring them back to Delray Beach. They are expected to return between 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Boca Raton Adds Three New Electric Vehicle Charging Stations By: Michael Demyan Boca Raton residents and visitors with electric vehicles will now have more options to charge their car, as the city has installed three new charging stations. Two of the three new stations are outside City Hall on West Palmetto Park Road. The other location is at the Spanish River Library. These new stations will be in addition to the one that was installed at the Downtown Library in October 2015. Each station can charge two cars at once, so up to eight vehicles can be topped off for free at the same time in the city. “The charging station at the Downtown Library has been a success.” Boca Raton Municipal Services Director Dan Grippo said. “The hope is that the stations are an added benefit and that they support and encourage drivers of electric vehicles.” The addition of more electric vehicle charging stations continue Boca Raton’s attempts to improve the environment. When the first station was installed, the Downtown Library was recognized with a LEED Silver Certification Plaque, which is awarded for buildings which promote clean energy and health while saving money. In May, the Boca Raton City
Council also adopted a climate change pledge through a unanimous vote. The pledge is a step forward in integrating the Regional Climate Action Plan, which includes 110 recommendations to make Southeast Florida a better place. Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie hopes that the new stations will set an example for other places around the city. “We hope that more commercial businesses will follow our lead and start installing stations as well,” she said. “Transportation models are changing and electric vehicles are a big part of that change; we all need to do our part.” City Council Member Robert Weinroth, who owns his own electric vehicle, agrees with Mayor Haynie’s sentiment. When Boca Raton only had the single charger installed, he would often see that two vehicles were already using it, leaving him unable to. The new chargers will help those kinds of situations, but he hopes that the expanding will not stop there. “We need to have these all around, not just at the municipal offices,” he said. “I think that conversations with the developers as they’re doing new communities, especially those that are coming in under planned mobility, we have made it clear that we expect that they’re going to be putting in the electric vehicle charge stations.”

The Momentum journey “is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen Israel’s relationship with Diaspora communities around the world,” said Dvir Kahana, director-general of Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs. “We are extremely proud of our strategic partnership with the JWRP. We share the vision of empowering Jewish women worldwide as leaders of the next generation with the ability and drive to raise children who are proud of their identity and strongly connected to Israel.” The Jewish Women’s Renaissance Project (jwrp.org) was founded in 2008, with the mission of empowering women to change the world through Jewish values. Its major project is “Momentum,” an eight-day, highly subsidized lifechanging journey to Israel, experienced by over 10,000 participants from 187 partner organizations in 26 countries worldwide. Since 2014, the JWRP has partnered with Israel's Ministry of Diaspora Affairs. “Our philosophy from the beginning has always been: inspire a woman, you inspire a family. FAU Students land lead roles in new TV series, Ultra Sultra
By: Gabriel Diaz Miami, Puerto Rico, and Hollywood are just three of the destinations FAU students Brandon Sirota (Class of 2017) and Eric Dunn (Class of 2016) will be visiting in their journey as lead actors in the new TV series “Ultra Sultra.” Based in Miami Beach, Ultra Sultra focuses on the entertainment lifestyle and backstories that happen to a group of young adults who work and live around the trendy club that entertains until 6 a.m. “The show is going to be about gorgeous people, the coolest DJ’s, the hottest, and most difficult club to get into,” said Ultra Sultra co-writer Olga Safari. Having worked on shows such as MTV’s “Making The Band,” and “The Hills,” the team behind Ultra Sultra are no rookies when it comes to the TV Show industry. The show will feature some of the most recognized social media personalities, a complete list of celebrities will be announced later this month. Sirota, a film and multimedia major and Dunn, an economics major were both in Hollywood, California at a social media networking event in late 2016 when they were introduced to Safari, a social media star and actress herself. After talking and exchanging information, Safari was impressed and decided to give both Sirota and Dunn lead roles in the show that promises to be a hit. Being social media celebrities themselves, both Sirota and Dunn have plenty of experience on camera. Dunn, for example, had 3.1 million followers on Vine and had over 464 posts on the app
that has since been bought off by Twitter and discontinued. “Consistently being on camera on Vine has made me comfortable in any on camera situation,” stated Dunn. Sirota stated that FAU had prepared him to be a lead role in the show in many ways. “Constantly networking and engaging with like-minded people at FAU, like Eric, has provided an immense amount of opportunities in this industry,” said Sirota. Sirota also feels that his mentor and FAU professor Doug Wetzel has really helped him to get to where he is today. “Doug Wetzel left an amazing impression on me and where I want to take my acting career,” said Sirota. “I couldn’t be more appreciative of how supportive and enlightening he was as a teacher and still is a friend.” Locally, the series is set to be focused on online and social media audiences and is set to be primarily shown over the internet. “The show is social media powered, and fans will see clips first on social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, then, full episodes will land on a syndicated lineup of video on demand on cable stations in the USA like Comcast, Time Warner and AT&T, as well as on satellite and through online broadcasters like www.filmon.tv,” according to Sirota. For 2018, Ultra Sultra has been picked to be aired in 22 different countries which validate it as a TV series that promises to be entertaining, luxurious, and sexy.

One of America’s Best Communities in Educating Youth to Read at Grade Level Living up to the idiom once an All-America City, still an All-America City, Delray Beach made history recently by becoming the only municipality in the state to be honored with this prestigious award three times. That feat was accomplished by one city employee, a few nonprofit organization members, school officials and community leaders – some who traveled to Denver earlier this month to compete in the 2017 All-America City Awards, which are given by the National Civic League. Delray Beach also landed the designation in 1993 and 2001. Getting there though was not easy. It took some hard work. This year’s All-America City competition recognized communities that have engaged residents in innovative, inclusive and effective efforts to advance childhood literacy. Much credit should go to Janet Meeks, the City’s education coordinator, who has been championing the cause for children from low-income families for many years. Very few public servants are as passionate about children’s issues at least publicly – as Meeks, who has been with the city for close to 30 years. She was part of the four-member delegation that represented the City
at the competition in Denver. They told the story of the ongoing collaborative efforts over the last five years to prepare children for kindergarten, reduce chronic absenteeism and increase participation in summer reading programs. Last school year, slightly more than one half of all third graders in Palm Beach County met Florida’s standards in reading. Forty eight percent of those same students were reading well below grade level and were retained. This year’s results were recently released and the number of third graders who earned a Level 3 or above in English inched slightly by 2 percentage points to 54 percent. Still, that was 4 percentage points lower than the statewide average of 58 percent. While there has been some hoopla over the city winning the award, it is important that the record be set straight: only a few people deserve to revel. Among the few is the education coordinator, who many people know as the engine behind many of the citysanctioned youth initiatives or as the city worker who always reports on educational and youth programs. But what many do not know, she has been battered and bruised over the years for our local youth.
In the early years of the International Baccalaureate program at Atlantic High school, she wormed her way to the table to make sure the college preparatory program would allow our students to earn the IB diploma and continue their studies at a four-year university, just as it was sold to the parents. When the school district moved Atlantic High School from Seacrest Boulevard to West Atlantic Avenue, Meeks was tasked with doing a lot of the dirty work and, at times, was the one who got cursed out from disappointed parents. And as a board member, she made sure deserving graduating students at Atlantic High school received scholarships for college through the Dare to be Great Foundation. Time and time again, she donated her own money to support local youth causes. So it is only logical that she bask in the glory as some, who ridiculed her as she applied for the award, have now jumped on the band wagon to share the limelight. I find it interesting that when the City got word that it was a finalist and was invited to the conference in Denver, one of her bosses told her to “go raise your own money” after she asked about funds to prepare for the event.
One prominent public figure recently referred to the recognition as a “touchy feely” award. None-the-less, 53 communities across the country vied for this “touchy feely” award and only 15 were selected in the super bowl of community service recognitions. While the award does not carry a monetary prize, it offers bragging rights of the good work being done in our community to address one or more of the challenges that can undermine early literacy. It also often brings in more tourism, new business and even better bond ratings. It is only fitting that the City sponsors a reception to recognize the leader and her team for their accomplishment. I say their accomplishment because the community has been there through the reading initiatives and the money used to prepare and pay the application fee came from donations to the Delray Reads program. As a reporter and an editor who has covered this City for 30 years and a community servant who has volunteered with youth for as many years, I owe it to the residents to know the truth. After all, if I do not set the record straight, who else will?
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Be the Best That You Can Be! True human greatness is not measured by how high an individual rises in personal and professional life, nor in the size of one’s personal material wealth. One’s individual value is better determined by the size of one’s heart and the right actions that proceed from valid convictions of a person! There must be flexibility manifested by one who can be and do well at whatever activity or level a person happens to be, while not losing touch with others less favored! Those who may have reached the highest levels of success in any vocation or profession, must know how to relate to peers and to subordi-

nates in genuine humbleness, instead of irrelevant arrogance. As I once read, those who presume to be the “top banana” should never cut themselves off from the whole bunch! A position of authority in any enterprise does not require nor demand isolation of its occupant from all others who are contributing, at many levels, to the success of a project. In fact, such success is only achievable when true, broad cooperation exists among peers and principal in leading an organization, advancing a project, or creating some new thing of special significance. People need people, and those
who learn to collaborate with one another have the greatest chances of accomplishing significant projects. It’s from those around that new ideas, unique perspectives, and awareness of consequences can be freely shared! On the road to success, whether personal, or of a project we’re engaged with, difficulties and mishaps are ever present. Even actual failure often attempts to be an impediment to final completion of what one is involved with. Yet, failure per se is seldom final to those determined to succeed. Thus, it needs not be viewed as permanent whenever it may occur! The problem is

that too many persons give-up too soon; they prefer to dwell in gloom than to seek creative ways to repair and remake what can be corrected. As history testifies, there has been much through the ages that has been brought from the ashes into new, productive use. What is so quickly discarded loses the chances of being re-examined, restored, and even brought to greater usefulness. Yet, only the best people know this, and can act with understanding that brings the desired success!

Introducing: College Life with Gabe the Intern By: Gabriel Diaz College life in Boca is one of the most underappreciated but largest aspects of the community. College life for students in Boca has gotten progressively bigger and better over the years. Boca has always been known for three things. Snowbirds from the Northeast, expensive everything, and it’s beautiful beaches. Recently, however, Boca has gotten plenty of buzz about its excellent colleges such as Florida Atlantic University, which received the award of number one public college in the state of Florida for having the highest job placement and highest five-year salary out of college. This means that more and more students are looking at coming to Boca for school. Seeing that Florida Atlantic University has a student population of over 30,000 students and Lynn University has around 2,100 students, college students make up a large part of the total population of Boca Raton which is around 91,000 people. Due to this unavoidable and quite large number of people that are directly connected to college life in Boca Raton, The Boca Raton Tribune decided to hire me, a humble college intern, aka
Gabe Diaz, aka FAU 2017 Greek Man of the Year, aka a senior in college, to talk about the college life. College Life with Gabe the Intern is going to be all about the best spots to visit if you are a college student in Boca including but not limited to bars, restaurants, places to shop, beaches, nightlife and more. You can not only expect reviews and information about many different locations, but also a video series in which we document our stay at all of these places. The video series is going to include interviews, behind the scenes footage, and hilarious attempts at jokes by Gabe the Intern. In this journey to explain college life and give the reader the inside scoop on all the best spots to visit as a poor college student in Boca Raton (or not), I will bring along co-workers, and friends to experience what I do on a day-to-day basis. The Top 5 College Bars in Boca Raton article is coming to you in the next couple of weeks, so make sure to stay tuned. Get ready to be informed, buzzed, fed, and have a laugh or two with this great college friendly series!

FAU Receives $50,000 Gift for Scholarship Fund
Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Music within the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters recently received a $50,000 donation to continue funding for the Georgina Dieter Dennis Vocal Scholarship Fund. This is the sixth year that the College has received this funding, with the scholarship going to students who graduate from a Florida high school and enroll in vocal studies courses in FAU’s Department of Music. The gift was presented by Elias Porras and Ron Schagrin, trustees for this Foundation, which provides a wonderful legacy of music from an accomplished performer to supporting talented young singers. Dennis, who passed away in 2006, had a storied music career starting at the age of 12 when she won the New York Music Week Association Junior Bronze Medal. She was awarded a scholarship to the Institute of Musical Arts of the Juilliard Foundation and later sang with the National Opera Association. Dennis made her debut at New York’s Town Hall in 1937 and then went on to Canada to sing with the Civic Music Light Opera Company and back to
the United States to New York’s Erlanger Theater and the Majestic. Dennis sang in every state in the Union during World War II and presented programs with James Victor’s Band for the USO. Dennis knew she was fortunate to have training and opportunities from an early age. She wanted to provide opportunities for others and so established the Georgina Dieter Dennis Foundation prior to her passing. “Students in the ‘arts’ have extra financial challenges when in addition to general college expenses they must also incur costs related to their field of study including equipment costs, and lab fees,” said Patti Fleitas, director of vocal studies at FAU. “Also, with performance and ensemble rehearsals, students’ available hours to work are greatly reduced, making the possibility of scholarship funding a defining factor in their college choice. Generous benefactors help students afford college, and help FAU to complete with other universities to attract the best and brightest, bringing a higher level of artistic and cultural excellence to community audiences.”

Florida Launch Gets Third Straight Swimming Proves Everlasting in Win Academic Excellence
By Zach Evans The Florida Launch defeated the Atlanta Blaze last weekend 19-16 at Florida Atlantic University Stadium. With the win, the Launch have won three consecutive games. With the win, the Launch move to third place in the Major League Lacrosse standings with a 5-3 record. The all-time series between these two teams is now 2-1 in the Launch’s favor. Both teams have met three times while playing in MLL. Before this game the Launch had beaten the New York Lizards twice, once on the road and once at home, giving the Launch some momentum as they took on the Blaze. Picking up in the second with 5:22 on the clock with the score being 10-9 in Atlanta’s favor, Dylan Molloy for the Launch was able to tie things up with a quick goal from the left side of the field making the score 10-10. After the faceoff, Atlanta came right back however and with the score now being 13-11. Atlanta’s Jake Withers ran down the field on a fast break and put the ball in the back of the net making the score 14-11 with 2:37 in the second quarter.
Heading into the third the Florida Launch was only down by one with a score 14-13. The Launch’s Molloy was able to make a great pass and assist to his teammate Kieran Mcardle who put in a shot right in front of the goal to tie up the game again now at 14 a piece with 9:21 left in the third. Then on a reverse pass from Kevin Rice to Randy Stats, the Blaze broke the tie with a go-ahead goal making it 15-14 with only seven seconds in the third quarter. The Launch’s Mcardle got another goal on the day bouncing the ball off the ground and into the net to once again even the score late in the game to make it 15 all. To take the lead for the first time Nick Mariano for the Launch ran up and swung his stick with all his might and scored a goal, putting his team up in the game. Running as fast as he could around the goal the Launch’s Ryan Drenner took the ball and put it home for another goal putting the launch up by two 17-15. Drenner, once again for the Launch, running around the goal threw a quick pass to Mcarle who pulled a hat trick with his third goal of the game and a score of 18-16. Mcarle would score his fourth and final goal of the game to make it a final of 19-16 for the Florida Launch. The Launch will look to continue its winning streak as they take on the Charlotte Hounds on Saturday, June 24 on the road at American Legion Memorial Stadium at 7:30pm.

Lynn University's swimming program collected its eighth consecutive College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team Award while Catalina Berraud-Galea was named a CSCAA Scholar All-American, as announced on Wednesday. Posting a collective team grade point average of 3.6, the Fighting Knights were 10th in Division II and tied for 44th in the nation among all NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA institutions. This was also the second consecutive semester Lynn has logged a GPA of 3.6 or better and seventh overall. "I am so proud of our team for upholding the high academic reputation we have striven so hard to achieve. Day in and day out this program pushes itself to succeed not only in the pool but in the classroom," said head coach Niki Alvarez.
