FAU Receives $50,000 From AT&T Foundation In keeping with its philanthropic focus on education, the AT&T Foundation has contributed $25,000 each to Florida Atlantic University’s Paradise Club, part of the FAU Foundation, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office Foundation for scholarship programs. The $25,000 contribution to FAU’s Paradise Club will help provide scholarships for deserving student athletes pursuing degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, STEM jobs are growing faster than any other U.S. sector. Available jobs in the STEM fields are set to increase 17 percent between 2014 and 2024 The $25,000 contribution to the PBC Sheriff ’s Foundation will support the Foundation’s Youth Scholarship Program. The program provides an opportunity for 40 underserved and at-risk students each year to succeed.

COMMUNITY Veterans Expo comes to Palm Books and Backpack Donation Beach State College on October 30 Program Jump Starts School Year
Veterans, military service members and their families will be able to advance their life and career goals at the South Florida Veterans Expo on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2-4 p.m. at the South County Civic Center, 16700 Jog Road in Delray Beach. Featuring more than 30 exhibitors, including employers, nonprofit organizations and government agencies, the expo will be hosted by Palm Beach State College and former state Sen. For a remarkable 20 years, volunteers through the Anne & Sam Klein Literacy Program, an initiative of Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County, have been visiting local elementary schools to provide one-on-one reading tutoring to students from primarily lower socio-economic backgrounds as well as donating books, school supplies and other literacy resources to help them improve their reading skills. Focused on Title I public elementary schools in Palm Beach County, over the past two decades the program is responsible for training 600 volunteers in 30 public elementary schools and reached more than 3,000 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Two successful elements include “Reading Express”, a new initiative implemented in the 2018-2019 school year, where groups of volunteers provide new books to children at local schools, synagogues, businesses and community groups. This effort is partially made possible by the Alloy Family Foundation. The second initiative, “Reading Together”, established 20 years ago in public schools, trains volunteers on best practices to engage children in reading proficiency. Volunteers then provide oneon-one tutoring to an assigned student who also receives books to add to their home library. “The Anne and Sam Klein Literacy Program has accomplished so much in its 20 years and has undoubtedly created a love of reading and learning for thousands of local children,” said Michael
Hoffman, president and CEO of Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. “We are proud to stand alongside this transformative educational initiative to ensure all students have the confidence and resources they need to have a successful school year and future.” In addition to books, the program also works with partner organizations to provide vital school supplies for children. For the third year, the Brooke Jackman Foundation has partnered with the Anne & Sam Klein Literacy Program and Federation’s Jewish Volunteer Center to provide 250 backpacks – known as Brooke Packs – filled with school supplies and age-appropriate reading materials. This year the following organizations are recipients of Brooke Packs: Family Promise of North/Central Palm Beach County, Florence De George Boys & Girls Club in West Palm Beach and Pioneer Park Elementary School in Belle Glade. “Twenty years of providing the gift of literacy to children is an honor and would not have been possible without the generosity of thousands of community members. a four to one vote approving less than a 1 percent increase adjusting for inflation. According to WPTV, the newly expanded budget will go towards funding projects for locations such as Gumbo Limbo and other parks and beaches. However, residents should be wary on getting their hopes up too soon as a future hike may be inevitable with increasing innovation. Commissioners are also still in the process of evaluating the budget for the National Golf Course in Boca Raton.

New Bill in Florida Could Prohibit Pets from Entering Food Establishments By: Christina Hristoforidis Boca Raton is visibly one of the most pet-friendly cities when it comes to allowing animals in establishments. Pets are allowed to follow their owners in majority of stores and food establishments. Even local restaurants like, Max’s Grille in Mizner Park, cater to pets through providing a specific pet-friendly menu. However, this could all change if the new proposed bill by state Representative Bruce Antone, gets passed. According to WPTV, the proposed bill filed during the 2020 legislation
session, would prohibit household pets from entering and staying in the indoor portion of a public food establishment. The bill would be implemented to “protect the health, safety, and general welfare of the public”. The bill would not pre-empt existing local ordinances but it would direct the state to adopt rules and provide a website for complaints. This bill could conflict with existing “Visit Florida” slogans advertising a “dog-friendly policy”. The bill is still undecided and legislative sessions will begin on January 14th to decide.

West Boca High School Chorus Needs Your Financial Support Should the average parent or taxpayer in Boca Raton care whether we have a great music program in the schools — or any music program at all, for that matter? Music is a nice idea, but is it essential? And given our schools’ focus on having all students achieve standards in reading, writing and math, can we afford to spend time on something like music? I say, “Yes” to all three - music should be part of every child’s education. Every year dozens of our students who participate in band and orchestra cannot afford to rent or buy their instruments. But there is an even greater challenge facing them: so many people are reluctant to support it financially. That’s why the West Boca High School Chorus is holding a fundraiser. This is the second year that The Boca Raton Tribune is urging you to support them. “Your generous support will help us offer a higher quality music experience for all of our students and families involved,” Catherine Briggs, the group’s leader, wrote in a post on their campaign webpage. “Your donation is tax deductible and you will receive a receipt via email for
your generous gift. If you could, please spread the word about our fundraiser by sharing it with your friends via email, text and social media - we would greatly appreciate it! We strive to create high quality music experiences that bring pride to our school and local community.” Donations will be used to buy sheet music, uniform maintenance, festival fees, transportation, voice lesson scholarships and awards, among other necessities. The choirs are largely self-funded. Typically, many public-school music programs have little to no official budget, so they must rely on teacher out-of-pocket spending, fundraisers or support through parent-teacher organizations. For years, music classes have been the ugly ducklings of school curriculums. When school districts must make budget cuts, music and arts programs are often the last courses to be added and the first on the chopping block. It is both interesting and so disheartening that many people never think about how the artists – who soothes our hearts with such melodious sounds – often achieve their status.
It takes money to pay for practice sessions to eventually read the sheet music and to play those instruments. Let’s face it, music is always around us. We do not do anything without music. We get music, just by turning on our TVs or radios, our ringtones and even the nursery rhymes. Yet, we often take it for granted that it’s going to be there. Through your donations all of Briggs’ vocal music students will receive a high quality and comprehensive music experience this year. “I was really hoping to gain your support. If making a gift is not something you are able to do at this time, then please consider sharing the fundraiser to any of your peers who may be interested,” Kamryn Mills, a graduating senior and president of the KOP Mentoring Network, wrote in an email to me. Last year, I matched up to the first $100 that she raised and this year I am making every effort to ensure she meets her goal of $500. I encourage you to also invest wisely in this child. Along with being an outstanding student academically, she is disciplined, polite and very appreciative
of everything she gets. “Thank you so much and I really appreciate all of your help! Your support will help make this season one to remember,” she continued. Educators say that music opportunities such as jazz band and orchestra ensembles give students a chance to connect outside of the classroom. They also give staff an opportunity to showcase talented student groups while offering the community opportunities to see live performances. Music education is such an important piece of the puzzle that helps us prepare students for life. Studies also suggest that those who learn music score better on math tests, which supports my theory of why music education should be a required component in all schools because of the proven academic, social, and personal benefits it provides. With Boca Raton being a caring and generous community that sees the value in music education, let us do our part to help fill that need for some of our children.

Never Try to be the “Smartest Person in the Room” There is a common saying, particularly in the world of sports, that “you win with people.” Even the best coach will fail without having quality, skilled players and support staff. The same holds true in the business and professional world. A visionary without a team of people to help in bringing his or her ideas into reality is just a dreamer. Unfortunately, whether it is because they are poor judges of talent, or because they want to protect their own fragile egos, some high-ranking executives hire only individuals of lesser capabilities. For those “leaders,” it gives a sense of protection from being surpassed by more gifted, better trained and educated staff members. Fortunately, not all CEOs and top executives feel that way. In fact, Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, one of the world’s largest infrastructure companies, feels just the opposite. He stated, “Try never to be the smartest person in the room. And if you are, I suggest you

invite smarter people…or find a different room.” That says a lot about Dell and other leaders like him. First of all, they are humble enough to not feel threatened by people who know more or can do more than he can. Second, they understand that for the benefit of the company and all of its stakeholders, they have the obligation to present the best product possible – and that would require having individuals on the team with expertise in some areas that they lack. And third, the true mark of a good leader is not accomplishing all the work alone, but recruiting the best people to share the load. I recall the days when I was a magazine editor. For me, some of the most enjoyable, exhilarating days were when we held planning meetings for each issue. We would take the articles and columns that had been written, then brainstorm about titles, illustrations and other graphics to give them as much reader appeal as possible.
Although I had some strong opinions about some things, I recognized the graphic designers would come up with better visual concepts than I could. They brought compelling, creative ideas I could never have imagined. Some people in the room were more detail-oriented than I was, so they noticed things I probably would have let fall through the proverbial “cracks.” And others just offered perspectives I never would have considered. When the magazine was produced and printed, it became clear, as I heard a wise person say, that “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” The Scriptures have much to say about this: Trusting in God can provide the humility needed. Some in leadership positions may fear being “shown up” by others and losing their positions of authority and responsibility. However, trusting in God gives us the confidence to believe He has directed the right people in our lives at the right time, even in the workplace. “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty

hand, that he may lift you up in due time” (1 Peter 5:6). Recognizing the gifts and contributions of others. Whether in a family, a church, or a company, everyone has a specific, important role to play. Even seemingly lesser parts are critical for producing the desired end result. “Now the body is not made up of one part but of many…. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?… But in fact God has arranged the parts of the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be…” (1 Corinthians 12:14-20). The more people involved, the more we can get done. Walking with God in the workplace, we can discover He can far exceed our hopes and expectations – often working through other people . “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power at work within us…” (Ephesians 3:20).

Campaign Kick-Off Events This week I attended two Campaign events in Boca Raton. The first for former State Senator, Maria Sachs who announced her candidacy for Palm Beach County Commissioner, Dist. 5, the same seat I ran for several years ago. This event was held at South County Civic Center. Then I was off to the next event for Scott Singer, Boca Raton’s current Mayor who will be running for re-election of his seat as well. This event was held at the Loch Bar in Mizner Park.
Overcoming Toxic Anger Years ago, my boss at the time appointed me to chair a taskforce to address a major problem in our company. For me, this became a political landmine, a classic no-win situation. My boss was likely hoping I would protect him from the possible fallout of the taskforce’s decision, but I did not. In its findings, the taskforce concluded the real issue was my boss’s approach to the problem we had been researching. Soon after my report was finalized and submitted, I received a demotion. My boss, who had been an advocate for me, became my enemy. For more than two years I fostered a toxic anger towards him. I felt unjustly treated and maligned. I had become the scapegoat for a problem of my boss’s own making. Seeking to strike back and gain a measure of revenge, every time I had an opportunity, I bad-mouthed this man to others. After carrying this weight of anger and bitterness, with no hope of the executive ever offering to correct the wrong he had done to me, I came to a startling, yet freeing realization: My anger had been hurting me much more than it had affected him. Even if my negative comments succeeded in diminishing my boss in the eyes of others, my anger was not appeased. Then I began to do something I should have considered much sooner – I determined to read, meditate on, and apply what the Bible teaches about anger, justified or not. For instance, Ephesians 4:26 teaches, “Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.” Thinking about his exhortation, it occurred to me that the sun had literally

gone down on my anger hundreds of times, and the festering bitterness I had continued to feel was giving the devil ample opportunity to undermine what God was trying to do in me and through me. Then I began pondering Matthew 6:15-16, in which Jesus states, “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” Those were hard words to read; as I pointed an accusing finger toward my one-time boss, it seemed the other fingers on my hand were pointing back at me. Pondering this, the Lord convicted me that since I had not forgiven my former boss, why should I expect God to forgive me for my many sins? I realized that in addition to forgiving my ex-boss – even if he never asked for it – I also needed to ask God to forgive me for many things, including my unforgiving spirit. To determine what God wanted me to do next, I read Matthew 5:23-24, in which Jesus says, “Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.” More than two years since my anger began, I finally started the process of reconciliation by calling my former boss – and asking his forgiveness. That did not fix what he had done, but at last I was free of the toxic anger and its devastating effects. Anger is an emotional cancer whose cure is forgiveness.

PBSC Criminal justice job fair to bring agencies from across state More than 20 police departments and other criminal justice organizations from Ft. Lauderdale to Orlando will recruit at the third annual Criminal Justice Job Fair, Friday, Oct. 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Palm Beach State College’s Public Safety Conference Center on the Lake Worth campus. Free and open to the public, the fair is designed for those seeking positions in law enforcement, corrections and 911 dispatch. Attendees will be able to apply for current job openings ranging from officer to civilian positions. Both certified and noncertified individuals and students are welcome. The job fair marks the third year that PBSC has partnered with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) to bring hiring agencies from across the state to the Lake Worth campus. The Palm Beach County Association of Chiefs of Police also is a co-sponsor for the second year in a row. “As the need for public safety professionals continues to grow, our goal is to provide our students and graduates, as well as local job seekers, with opportunities to meet a wide variety of law enforcement, corrections and telecommunication agencies,” said Rick Rocco, director of PBSC’s Criminal Justice programs. “Speaking directly to agency personnel is

New Trash Bins Raise Issues With Local Palm Beach County Residents

As of recently, many citizens are unhappy with the size and weight of the new bins, leading to a larger inconvenience when taking out the trash. SPORTS PBA Men’s Golf Collect First D-II Wins in Program History
The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s golf team clinched its first tournament win since joining the NCAA Division II level in 2013, as Martin Westerlund collected the program’s first individual trophy of the D-II era as well. Exactly a week after the women’s golf squad notched its first victory in program history, the men’s team followed suit, smashing individual and team records en route to a dominating triumph at the Country Club of Petersburg in Virginia. All five golfers recorded their lowest score of the 2019-20 campaign in the opening round on Monday as Palm Beach Atlantic logged the lowest team round since golf was reinstated in 2013, a 283. Westerlund, a senior, led the way for the Sailfish, shooting the lowest round by any PBA golfer in the D-II era in the opening 18 holes (65). His seven-under score through the first round put the Cal State-Monterey Bay transfer in the top spot individually and helped Palm Beach Atlantic to an early lead on day one. Grant Horvat joined Westerlund as the other member of the PBA team under par after one round with a 71 (-1). Through two rounds, the Sailfish
were poised to complete the victory. After a D-II program record in the opening 18, PBA bested the mark by two strokes, registering a 281 and sitting 12 strokes under par. The ‘Fish held an 18-shot advantage through 36 thanks to another low round by Westerlund (69) and Jacob Shamblin’s best 18-hole score of the season (67). William Hartford also shot an impressive 70 (-2) to cap off play on Monday. Westerlund, Shamblin and Hartford all collected eagles during the two-day span to propel the Sailfish to the win. PBA easily coasted through the third and final round to take home the trophy as Horvat and Westerlund shot a 68 and a 69, respectively, on Tuesday. Westerlund captured the individual title at the tournament with an overall score of 203. The Stockholm, Sweden native finished 13 strokes under par, while his teammate Horvat ended the invitational two under, good enough to tie for fifth place. The individual title marked the first of Palm Beach Atlantic’s DivisionII golfing years on either the men’s or women’s side. PBA will look to continue its phenomenal stretch at the Shark Invitational next week. The tournament is set to be played on Oct. 7 and 8 in Palm Beach Gardens.

FAU Women’s Soccer Travels for Two More C-USA Matchups Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer concludes a four-game road trip with two Conference USA tilts this weekend, against Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss. The venue and gametime for Friday night’s matchup with the Lady Techsters has changed. It will now be played at 4 p.m. Eastern at James Field at Hoss Garrett Stadium. The Owls finish out the weekend against the Golden Eagles on Sunday, a 2 p.m. Eastern start. The Owls (8-2-0, 2-0-0 C-USA) began this stint away from home with two scheduled matches last weekend, but the first – against Oral Roberts – was rained out. FAU was able to salvage the trip with a 2-1 C-USA victory over UAB, with scores by Pernille Velta and Madison Davenport. The eight wins to start the year is the best in program history, topping a mark held for nearly 30 years (a 7-2-1 beginning to the 1992 season). The current streak of six wins in a row equals a stretch last season (from Sept. 14 to Oct. 5) as well as in 2015, as the longest in the Coach Baker era. The last time the team has won seven consecutive games came back in 2006. Updated RPI rankings came out on Monday, and the Owls still rate among the top 20 teams in the nation, slotting No. 19. They held firm as the No. 5 team in the United Soccer Coaches South Region poll as well. Along with FAU, one of the hotter teams in C-USA through non-conference play has been Louisiana Tech (9-1-1, 1-10 C-USA). The Lady Techsters actually
started out the season 8-0-0 before darkness forced a tie against Grambling State. The squad then took their league opener over Old Dominion, 2-1, before suffering their first loss of the year last Sunday, 2-1 in double overtime at WKU. Autumn Woodard ranks as not only the top goal scorer in C-USA, but in all of Division I, with 13. She has had at least one goal in nine of LA Tech’s 11 matches. Southern Miss (5-5-0, 0-2-0 CUSA) saw a four-match win streak snapped at the hands of their first two league opponents, falling 1-0 in back-to-back affairs to WKU (in 2 OT) and North Texas. The Golden Eagles will have a Friday night matchup with FIU before hosting the Owls. A trio of players lead the way with four goals each: Alice Campos, Jenny Caracheo and Hailey Pohevitz. LA Tech and FAU have rarely met in the Owls’ six-year tenure in C-USA. They were not scheduled against one another in the regular season in 2016 or 2017, but did meet in the ‘16 C-USA postseason, with FAU winning 3-0. Last year in the regular season in Boca Raton, Miracle Porter notched the game-winner in the 69th minute for a 1-0 victory and a 3-1 Owl advantage in the series. Against Southern Miss, FAU will be looking for a bit of retribution, as the Golden Eagles knocked the Owls out in the C-USA semifinal round, 1-0 in Norfolk, Virginia. Earlier in the regular season, in Boca, the Owls won 2-0. FAU holds the edge in the series against USM, 3-2.
