“Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” John 12:23-25

COMMUNITY Thousands March in local March for Our Lives Rally in Boca Raton Photos on page 5 Boca Raton drew the largest crowd in Palm Beach County at the March for Our Lives rally, that was held nationwide. City estimates show that at least 6,000 people showed up to the event, with a packed Mizner Park Amphitheatre, which has a capacity of 5,000, plus at least 1,000 more just outside at Mizner Park. The rally was among the hundreds demonstrations across the country to boost school safety and push for tougher gun-control legislation. The march began at 10am at at the baseball fields just behind Boca Raton City Hall. Protesters then marched north on Crawford Boulevard, turned right on Northwest Fourth Diagonal and headed south on Northwest Boca Raton Boulevard. From there, they headed east on Northwest Second Street and turn north on Plaza Real toward the amphitheater off Federal Highway just north of Palmetto Park Road. “The idea came to fruition, when, like all of us, my heart was hurting for these families who lost their children and doing nothing was not an option,” said Barbara Finizio, one of the organizers of the March. “Watching things happen rather than making things happen, under these horrific conditions was not even a consideration so I researched whether a Boca march had been started and found, at the time Boca, Delray and WPB had not begun one.” Finizio reached out to Maria Sachs, a fellow mom, and advocate, who agreed to partner with her, and thus the Boca march was born. “We were both very upset about the tragedy that happened so close to us,” said Sachs. “Rather than complain we decided to do something about it.” “As to the turn out, we were worried about the turn out, because it was Spring Break for Palm Beach County Schools,” said Finizio. “We were expecting 2000 and more like 6000-8000 showed up. We were thrilled with the turnout.” Both Finizio and Sachs are committed to the cause and wish to keep it going. Affiliated with March for Our Lives and having the March in conjunction with the marches around the globe was the goal. After meeting with City Officials, Fire and Police, it soon became clear that getting permits would be almost impossible. “It was a fortunate encounter
with another Mom that helped pave the way, that Mom was the Mayor of the City, Sue Haynie,” said Sachs. The day of the event, March for Our Lives Boca Raton had volunteers from Mothers Demand Action which totaled to 30, as well as friends who had volunteered. “Nancy King and her family, as well as many others deserves a shout out of thanks for their help from the beginning,” added Finizio. While the movement began with two Moms, Sachs and Finizio are thankful of the help recieved from Kelley Devieto, of Moms Demand Action; Rita Thrasher of Boca's Promise; Arlene Ustein of the League of Women Voters; Shelly from my Law Office; Finizio's daughter Michelle, and my Sachs’ daughters, Jessica from JARC and Natasha from Coursea who joined from San Francisco. Monika Amar, of the City's Special Events office also assisted in taking care of the hundreds of logistics that go into an event of this magnitude. CBS offered a simulcast of the March in Washington DC. “This was so important in making us feel a part of this larger movement where the City of Boca Raton and its citizens were represented and our voices were heard,” Sachs added. Rather than organized partisan groups protesting, buses of folks coming from communities and homeowner associations arrived at the March in solidarity. Ages ranged from children in strollers to seniors in their late 80's to 90's. “As far as I could see from the stage, there were thousands of people, standing together in unison for our children,” said Sachs. “We did not know anyone personally, however, we know people who know some of the families. As a mother I felt their pain even though it did not happen to me,” said Finizio. “I have 3 daughters who I worry about daily and ask them to avoid concerts, public venues, trains, buses, etc. I remind them to know their surroundings and be vigilant at all times. When you can't feel safe at churches, concerts, movie theaters, offices, or any public venue the time to make a change is now.” Finizio and Sachs are not done and have plans for more activism events in Boca Raton. “The March was a great success, but it doesn't end here,” said Sachs. “We're planning the next step, which will be in concert with the national movement but with a local emphasis. We will be announcing the next event soon which will be focused on specific community policies to keep our students safe.”

The five-decade old Mizner Park Post Office is a cornerstone of Boca Raton, though the United States Postal Service is currently considering relocation. The City Council is holding a meeting on Thursday, March 29, at 4:30 at the Boca Raton Community Center Annex where the USPS and Council are seeking “public input.” It can be safely assumed that the meeting will be flooded with the same public input already available to officials. More than 1,000 people signed a petition to keep the historic building in its current place. Residents cited local businesses and the amount of people that rely on the office in the downtown area in discussion with the Palm Beach Post. Councilman Scott Singer explained after Tuesday’s Council meetings that the City Council unanimously supports keeping a Post Office in downtown Boca. Singer continued on Facebook, “We’ve been working with our federal lobbyists, the Postal Service, our congressional representative – Congressman Deutch – all of them

to communicate how strongly we feel about our Post Office remaining in our downtown.” Though Singer relayed the Council’s priority in keeping a Post Office available to downtown residents, that could mean any number of outcomes. The meeting Thursday night is for City Officials to pitch prospective locations to move the offices to, explain why this may be necessary, and, of course, for the public to air their grievances. Many believe that the building is essential to businesses growing in Boca Raton, while others counter with the fact that the large amount of space could be used more effectively. Councilman Singer mentioned that proposals to use the space for a parking garage or a lot for ridesharing vehicles were kicked around. Thursday’s meeting will certainly clear up discussion around the topic. Either way, the petition’s massive, rapid support shows where the majority of people will likely stand on the issue. The historic Mizner Post Office will be something to keep an eye on for weeks to come.

Enough of the Politics, Give us Some Good News As I pen this column, I am smiling from ear to ear. My heart and mind are so relieved, I am ecstatic. Finally, after months of listening to friends hurl insults against each other in candidates’ forums, the caustic emails cluttering my box, once civil residents exposing each other’s dirty laundry, and campaign signs littering our streets, the 2018 municipal election is over. Yeah! With that season in the rearview mirror, we can get back to reporting the good news in our communities. We need not look hard to find the latest happenings. A group of men in Delray Beach has been meeting monthly to share ideas and come up with solutions to improve their community and help each other professionally. “Men Talk” meets on the first Friday of each month at the Fairfield Inn on West Atlantic Avenue. Delray Beach resident Chris Ceasar’s vision was to use the forum
to empower young men with tools to navigate the challenges they face every day. At a recent meeting, they got a chance to bounce ideas off each other and learn from some of the “seasoned leaders” in the community. Among the power houses present were long-time radio disc jockey and businessman James Thomas, who helped launched the careers of many prominent media personalities, retired NFL cornerback Brandon Flowers and Delray Beach Community Improvement Director Michael Coleman, who has given many local residents a new lease on life through employment. Among the many topics they discussed were wealth management, preparing yourself for success, giving back and mentoring. To show their commitment, some of the men, including Ceasar’s older brother, Bill Ceasar, have been mentoring a young man who had an interest and showed promise as a
boxer. Bruce Laster, 21, lost both parents a few years ago and had not identified any role models to emulate. He was determined. He made time to prepare between working at a hotel in Boca Raton and at a fast food restaurant in Boynton Beach. Chris Ceasar recalls looking out his window at 3 a.m. and there was Laster punching a bag or running three miles to the beach and back. They told him if he wanted to be the best in boxing, the hotel and restaurant gig would not cut it. So they reached out to their contacts, dug into their pockets and raised enough money to send him off to Las Vegas Wednesday night, where he will train at the famed Mayweather Boxing Club for a month. The men saw a young man with unlimited potential and threw their arms around him. As he embarks on another phase of his career,
I hope he takes this experience with him and pay it forward wherever he calls home. Another young man who already is showing gratitude to his community is Brisly Estime, a graduate of Atlantic High and Syracuse University who now plays for the New York Jets. He recently sponsored a kickball tournament at Merritt Park, which drew several segments of the city together. Christopher Haynes said he was very impressed and happy to see the different sections of the community, including the police, fire fighters and former gang members, playing together for a good cause. “ We all come from different walks of life and even though we have our differences in our personal lives, we can still get together for one of our own and support him for what he is doing,” said Haynes, the disc jockey from Beach Boys Entertainment and a local educator.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Make Finishing Well Your Aim! When you come to the end of your earthly journey, what monuments shall you leave behind to impact others? How many altars shall you have erected to celebrate your own fruitfulness in your lifetime? Will you have real fruit to show or only leaves to display? These questions are raised because all human creatures are placed on earth for a variety of reasons, with each individual wired uniquely to fulfill specific purposes. To that end, three actions are expected of everyone: to make decisions, to make progress, and to make a difference. Any individual is capable of doing all three. Obviously, this is not what appears in the report card at the conclusion of a person’s earthly pilgrimage. Many people may go
through life in its entirety without being able to make any meaningful decision, and though several attempt it, some often do it wrongly. Quite a few are incapable of advancing in any direction, about anything. Moreover, making a difference is something which not many consider, and fewer yet make it real. All humans are called upon to travel the path assigned to each. But since humans are social creatures, their paths always intersect with those of others, so that experiences may be shared, examples may be emulated, and mutual encouragement exchanged. Any activity for which proper planning occurs at every step of the way has every reason to succeed. Yet, any period of glory
is not guaranteed to be maintained indefinitely; past achievements are not necessarily today’s reality, much less tomorrow’s performance. One needs to make decisive provisions for the continuing success of an enterprise, since one may be taken away from its production and command at any time. Many stop at peak performance and, then, reach a plateau from which a decline can easily emerge. In my lifetime I have repeatedly observed how many individuals quickly descended from hero to zero; they lacked staying power, many were devoid of a moral compass, with several also destitute of common sense, people skills, and the additional resources which can ensure victory
at the finishing line. Throughout life, gains do not necessarily define you, just as losses should not diminish anyone. The essential factor is to know who you are, with all the assets and limitations which every individual possesses; to recognize barriers not as the end of the line, but merely as signposts to better things still ahead if you proceed amidst all challenges! Plan to finish well, for anyone can. Just follow this sound advice I once read: “Do the very best you can with what you have, where you are now!” God will do the rest and ensure triumph at last!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Palm Beach State College Wins Award
Palm Beach State College has won a Paragon Award from the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations for a promotional video highlighting the College’s “Five Campuses, One College” concept. The 1 ½-minute video won a third-place bronze award in the video shorts-single category. Produced inhouse by Idalia Centeno, multimedia specialist in the College Relations and Marketing office, the video featured PBSC students, faculty and staff. NCMPR, which has a membership of about 1,600 PR and marketing professionals from more than 650 colleges, presented gold, silver and bronze awards in 53 categories at an awards banquet held March 20 in Las Vegas.
NCMPR received 1,943 entries from 243 colleges around the nation. The competition is the only one of its kind that honors excellence among marketing and PR professionals at two-year colleges. The award is among the most recent recognition the College has earned for work produced by College Relations and Marketing staff. In October, the College also won bronze Medallion Awards from NCMPR District II in the Excellence in Writing and College Promotional Brand video categories. Kristi Sorrow, college relations and marketing specialist, and Centeno profiled the story of Daniel O’Neal, a PBSC graduate who struggled with PTSD. He received his Associate in Science degree in Paralegal last May with the support of many, including his service dog, a 6-year-old male Siberian Husky named Ghost.

Tri County Humane Society Doggie and Kittie Ball On Saturday evening I attended the Tri County Humane Society Doggie and Kittie Ball at Boca West Country Club. A very large crowd was in attendance. Sharon DiPietro and Auctioneer Neil Safer raised a very large amount of money from a live auction to benefit a lot of four legged friends. The food, filet mignon and lobster tail was fabulous followed by so many desserts and an ice cream station and malt shake stations. Dancing was fabulous as well with the Steve Chase band getting the crowd on it’s feet all night! Even some of the four legged guests were dancing with their owners!

Understanding The Times While I was partnering with a friend, Jerry, on a consulting job, he shared a profound insight with Tom, who was one of our clients. Jerry’s observation was simple, but profound: “Success is the greatest impediment to greatness.” Once success settles in, Jerry explained, it is not uncommon for leaders to believe achievements are due to their own professional brilliance. As a result they start to assume their success is perpetual. They think that whatever decisions they make will always prove to yield more success. As markets and conditions change, however, successful people can easily be left behind if they are not constantly looking to understand the times, recognizing when important changes occur and adapting accordingly. Sometimes in today’s world, it seems the only thing that is unchanging is the reality that things can – and often do – change, sometimes at incredible speed. Embracing the status quo is an excellent strategy if you intend to be left behind while your competitors surge ahead. Change, of course, is hardly a new concept, although technology and communications have certainly played a role in accelerating the rate and scope of change. The Bible offers some wise observations about change, and the importance of our willingness to respond to it effectively. For instance, in the book of 1 Chronicles we find an interesting recounting of the great men who joined David in his battle against Saul. We learn about
the, “men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what Israel should do”(1 Chronicles 12:32). They were astute observers of what was occurring around them, seeking to discern how best to respond to changing circumstances. The ancient book of wisdom, Ecclesiastes, also addresses the inevitability of change. The first verse of the third chapter begins with, “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” It addresses changing demands of work in several ways: “A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted…. A time to break down, and a time to build up…. A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones…. A time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew…” (Ecclesiastes 3:2-7). As we approach our work – formulating plans, developing strategies, undertaking projects, and evaluating results – it would be extremely beneficial to take a cue from the biblical men of Issachar, constantly seeking to understand the times so we will know what we should do not only to succeed, but also to pursue greatness. At the same time, excellent leaders know that understanding the times and being willing to change their approach do not require changing or compromising their values. Those remain constant, serving as a lighthouse amid the ever-shifting seas of change.

Palm Beach State College Professor honored as hero in health care education
In the eyes of the Palm Beach County Medical Society, Robert M. Kershner, M.D., is a hero. Dr. Kershner, who is chairman, medical director and the lead professor for Palm Beach State College’s Ophthalmic Medical Technology program, will be honored at PBCMS’s upcoming 15th Annual Heroes in Medicine Awards luncheon for his contributions in health care higher education. The event will be held April 20 at the Kravis Center in downtown West Palm Beach. More than 40 adults and teens have been selected as 2018 Heroes in Medicine in 15 categories after a rigorous review of nominations from the society’s 1,400 physician and physician assistant members, as well as health care professionals, educators, business people and others in the county. All awardees, including Kershner, will be considered for the top award of 2018 Hero of the Year, to be announced at the event before an anticipated audience of 400-500 people. The luncheon’s net proceeds support Project Access, a physician-led network linking physicians and other health care providers, offering comprehensive care and services at no cost to local, uninsured children and adults. “I am proud to be selected, though I never really consider myself a hero,” Kershner said. “Rather I believe this award is a recognition of the excellence of our Ophthalmic Medical Technology program, it’s Palm Beach Gardens campus, administration, staff, faculty and the students and graduates who, every day, make us proud to be here.” Dr, Kershner instructs a student in examining a volunteer patient in the Ophthalmic Medical Technology facility on the Palm Beach Gardens campus. Kershner developed the Associate in Science degree program in Ophthalmic Medical Technology from scratch and launched it in 2012. An eye physician and surgeon who has performed over 28,000 cataract, refractive and glaucoma procedures, Kershner has practiced in Palm Beach, Boston and Tucson, Ariz. He personally knows the value of ophthalmic
medical technologists, who support ophthalmologists in the evaluation of vision and treatment of patients with eye disorders. Without highly trained technologists, ophthalmologists can’t do their jobs as effectively or help as many patients. The program’s students—who have come from 18 countries over the last six years—train in a state-of-the-art facility designed by Kershner, featuring a fully equipped examination room, laboratory and surgical suite. They use Modernizing Medicine’s electronic health record system for ophthalmology, but the entire curriculum is also paper-free. Kershner created the first totally digital learning system for ophthalmic medical technology education. Students access all audio, video and graphics content, notes, study guides, assignments, quizzes and exams from either a tablet or mobile device. Beyond the classroom, each student does three different clinical externships over three semesters in the two-year A.S. degree program. Kershner and his team have enlisted about 40 externship sites, and these local ophthalmic practices, surgical centers and clinics snap up students for full-time positions as soon as they graduate. The program is still the first of its kind in South Florida and is one of only four nationwide to be accredited for Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist training, the highest level designated by the International Council of Accreditation for Allied Ophthalmic Education Programs. Kershner is recognized as an international leader in cataract and refractive surgery and a world expert on visual neuroadaptation and the surgical correction of astigmatism. Today, in addition to his role at PBSC, he is a sought-after industry consultant and widely published in medical journals and textbooks. A recipient of more than 40 awards for medical excellence and listed in several “best” ophthalmologist guides, Kershner has also developed numerous medical devices, surgical instruments (many that bear his name), lasers, and intraocular lens implants for cataract, refractive and glaucoma surgery.

FAU Diplomacy Program Receives Distinguished Delegation Award
The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program at Florida Atlantic University received the Distinguished Delegation Award at the National Model United Nations competition in New York City. A team of 24 FAU undergraduates joined more than 5,500 college students from 350 universities in the annual competition where schools represent countries and students step into the shoes of diplomats to solve global problems. The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program, which trains students in world affairs, dispute resolution and debate, was established in 1996 and is a unit of the Peace, Justice and Human Rights Initiative. To date, the program has won 26 national and international awards for
academic excellence. “These students are the living embodiment of unbridled ambition,” said Jeffery Morton, Ph.D., professor of political science in FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. “I congratulate them on their hard work, diligence and commitment to excellence.” The 2018 delegation is made up of undergraduate students from the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, the Harriett L. Wilkes Honors College and the University Honors Program. The team will compete in nationals in Washington, D.C. in November.

SPORTS Boca Raton FC Inks Junior “The Machine” Palacios for 2018 NPSL Season
Boca Raton Football Club is proud to announce that Junior Palacios has joined the blue and white for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season. Palacios is no stranger to the NPSL Sunshine conference, as the midfielder has played for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers U23, and Miami United FC during their Sunshine Conference Championship Run in 2015. “We are very excited to have Junior as the newest member of our family,” said president Douglas Heizer. “We are in the last push before the start of the NPSL Season and getting Junior signed was a top priority for our staff.” In Colombia, the 21-year-old played for Alianza Petrolera FC of the First Division for two seasons before making the move to the United States. “I’m thankful to the club and the front office staff for giving me
this opportunity,” said Palacios. “I will work my hardest to represent this jersey proudly this season.” Nicknamed “The Machine” because of his tirelessly work ethic, Palacios will be a big part of head coach Jim Rooney’s system during the 2018 NPSL Season. “Junior is a professional in all aspects of the game,” says Rooney. “He has been here before and knows what it takes to take a team to the NPSL Sunshine Conference Championship, a goal we hope to achieve this season.” Single game tickets, as well as season ticket packages for Boca Raton FC’s 2018 NPSL Season at Atlantic High School are available now. Single game tickets start as low as $10, and season tickets start at $40. For more information, please visit www.bocaratonfc.com/tickets.
Boca Raton FC Signs Venezuelan Veteran, Josehp Sosa
As the preparations for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League continue, Boca Raton FC is proud to announce the signing of Josehp Sosa for the 2018 Season. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Sosa debuted as a professional in his home country at the age of 17 and since then has played in some big club in Venezuela, including Vigia FC, and Caracas FC. The 25-year-old defender comes to Boca Raton FC after being part of the club’s open tryout and since then has made a huge impact in Jim Rooney’s team. “Josehp impressed me from day one,” said head coach Jim Rooney. “His ability to read the game, his composure on and, and off the field, those were all telltale signs that he has played in the highest level and knows what it takes to get there.”
“I am ready to assume this new challenge that God has put me on the to with great seriousness, and commitment,” said Sosa. “I’m thankful to the club and the coaching staff for trusting my talent and being part of this 2018 NPSL season.” Sosa has already played in a few scrimmages and preseason games with the club and has been a big part of a defense which Rooney believes will be able to hang with the best of them in the Sunshine Conference. “Having a coach like Jim Rooney is a dream,” added Sosa. “He demonstrates in each training his quality as a player and also a coach. The group is absorbing as much as we can from him in order to have a successful 2018 campaign.”

Freshman Ignacio Garcia won the deciding point as the Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team beat South Alabama 4-1 on Thursday. "I am extremely happy about our team's performance," FAU Head Coach Ricardo Gonzalez said. "Today we won together as a team. We fought hard for every point and for each other. We were consistent with our actions throughout the entire match. We had great energy. And we held our composure in the big moments. We did all of this as a whole, which we have lacked in various matches in the past. We need to continue to build on this towards the last stretch of our season."
