Community Lynn University to Break Ground Boca Raton Regional Named as on $35 Million University Center One of 150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare

Lynn University will break ground Thursday, April 20, on the Christine E. Lynn University Center. The 11 a.m. ceremony will take place at the heart of campus and will feature guest speakers, food and drink, a unique photo opportunity, virtual reality renderings, and remarks from the namesake donor, Christine E. Lynn. "Mrs. Lynn is our university’s strongest supporter, through both her leadership as our board of trustees chair and her unparalleled generosity as a donor,” says Lynn President Kevin M. Ross. “We are excited to come together as a campus to thank Mrs. Lynn for her latest gift—the largest gift in our university’s history—as well as the other donors inspired by her giving.” The university center is the final component of the Lynn 2020 strategic plan. It has been in the works since October 2015, and was made possible thanks to a $15 million challenge grant offered by Mrs. Lynn. Construction is expected to begin immediately following the groundbreaking. “Our goal in designing the university center is to embrace student-cen-

tered activities and drive energy on campus,” says Cliff Bollman, project manager for Gensler, architects of the Lynn University Center. “Small touches, like utilizing daylight design, will help students remain connected with each other, feel connected to campus and be encouraged to get involved.” The new 65,000-square-foot, three-story building will be home to the university’s Center for Student Involvement, offering large multi-purpose rooms for student organizations, classes and events, as well as traditional conference areas and staff offices. Its revamped Christine’s café and new Elaine’s multipurpose dining area will provide ample space for socializing and expressing creativity. Student services will be relocated to the university center from around campus, including Career Connections, the Center for Learning Abroad, a modernized Campus Store, expansion of the university’s award-winning 24/7 dining experience and a new mail room. The facility’s additional special event spaces and its west- and north-facing balconies will overlook sporting facilities and the Wold Performing Arts Center, offering students and guests pleasant campus and sunset views. “The Christine E. Lynn University Center is the largest project we have ever undertaken on our campus,” continues Ross. “This game-changing building, which we have dreamed about for a while, will combine social and learning spaces and be a one-stop destination for our students.”

Officials at Boca Raton Regional Hospital today announced that the Hospital has been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of “150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare.” The list recognizes organizations committed to fulfilling missions, creating outstanding cultures and offering competitive benefits to their employees. Boca Regional is only one of 10 hospitals to be so recognized in the entire state of Florida. Other notable honorees across the nation include the Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Becker’s Hospital Review accepted nominations and developed an editorial review process to include organizations that have gone above and beyond to make their hospitals, health systems and companies great places to work. The 2017 list features both healthcare provider organizations and other healthcare-specific companies. “We are honored to receive this prestigious accolade,” said Mindy Raymond, Vice President of Human Resources at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. “This recognition lends credence to our ongoing commitment for Boca Regional to continually evolve as an attractive and fulfilling place for healthcare profession-

als to work.” Boca Regional’s submission included a look at its diverse offerings in employee recognition and professional development programs, as well as wellness initiatives and competitive benefits. Included were such examples as the Hospital’s @WorkCare Health Center, which provides employees with an onsite health clinic with the goal of allowing them to achieve their optimum health and Boca Regional’s Center for Lifelong Learning, where employees have the opportunity to enhance both the knowledge and skills necessary to provide competent, caring and compassionate interactions with patients and family members, physicians, co-workers and volunteers. “We congratulate Mindy Raymond, Brian Altschuler, our Vice President of Ancillary Operations, and the entire Human Resources department for continuing to structure and provide programming that has helped to make Boca Regional an outstanding place to work as evidenced by Becker’s recognition,” said Jerry Fedele, President and CEO at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. “Our employees truly are our most important asset and this accolade reflects our ongoing commitment to benefit them both professionally and personally.”

CALL ANYTIME! By Lady Hereford Nearly 200 women from across South Florida received some expert advice on discovering their passions and using them to make a difference in their homes, workplaces and communities at an empowerment conference recently. The theme of the inaugural Women’s Empowerment Conference was E3: Educate, Elevate, Empower: Turning Passion N2 Action. Throughout the March 25 event, the speakers focused on the power of We. "We can make a difference one woman at a time,” Geanine Wester, president of EmpowHER of the Palm Beaches, the conference host, said in her opening remarks. “We can do it together. That is the momentum that is going to make a huge difference. So go forth, get uncomfortable. We encourage you to be the CEO of your own companies and own it for other women around you. Be empowered, and it started today; it started the moment you registered for this conference.” One of the general session speakers, VoteRunLead cofounder Rhonda Briggins, challenged the nearly 200 people in attendance to look around at the others at their table and pledge to support any of them who might be considering running for public office. “Women are not like men. You have to ask a woman to run for office,” she said. “So every time you see an amazing woman in your community, I want you to go up to her and invite her to run for office, because we're not going to increase the pipeline of women unless we do that.” Another general session speaker, Kalisha Dessources of the National Collaborative of Young Women’s Initiatives, spoke about how hard work, determination and encouragement from her family led to her being appointed policy advisor to the White House Council on Women and Girls during the Obama administration. Dessources said there were times when no one took her seriously because she was young.

April 14 - April 20, 2017

“Give yourself a seat at the table. Don't wait for somebody to give you a seat at the table,” she said. During the conference, at the Hilton West Palm Beach, she also held a special roundtable session with female students in EmpowHER’s Leadership Academy for Girls. Conference-goers also heard the inspiring personal testimony of government law attorney and lobbyist Yolanda Cash Jackson, who spoke of We in terms of the current statistics of women in office at the local, state and national levels. “You have to have a voice. We have power together,” she said. Similarly, National Congress of Black Women President Dr. E. Faye Williams said via a video presentation that as women, we need to respect one another and fight for our constitutional rights. West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio and Palm Beach County Mayor Paulette Burdick were on hand to deliver a proclamation for Women’s History Month. “If you had asked me 10 years ago would I ever be mayor of a city, let alone a city in Florida, I would have laughed out loud,” Muoio said. Burdick said, “we're all here today because we have a vision for our girls and women that they will all experience equality, independence and safety in their everyday lives.” The day included a panel discussion on women’s health issues featuring several local physicians and health experts, as well as breakout sessions on the topics of leadership, economic, political, branding and legal empowerment. Emcees for the event were WPTV-NewsChannel 5 sports anchor Keli Fulton Ferguson and Lynn Whitfield, a local attorney. EmpowHER of the Palm Beaches is a nonpartisan organization of women creating change in their communities, in their lives and in the world. The organization has five empowerment focus areas: personal, economic, political, educational and youth. For more information, visit www.empowherofthepalmbeaches.org.

Officer Christine Braswell: a Treasured Public Servant Whose Hugs Were as Warm as Her Smile I solicit your prayers for the families and loved ones of Delray Beach police Officer Christine Braswell and Officer Bernenda Marc. Braswell, 40, died last weekend from injuries sustained in a head-on collision while riding a motor scooter in Key West. Marc, 25, remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The two were enjoying their vacation in the Keys when a 31-year-old woman turned into a convenience store and collided with their scooter, investigators said. The crash is still under investigation. However, Key West police said the woman has a lengthy rap sheet including an arrest several years ago for speeding. She did a sobriety test. It is not clear what charges, if any, she will face. The Delray Beach police agency and our community lost an exemplary young officer with the promise of a great career. She touched many lives during her 12-year tenure. I saw Officer Marc from a distance but did not know her. However, I got to know Christine quite well - as a committed and selfless public servant with a discipline that amazed me. She was a hugger with that warm

smile and jovial personality that was evident by those she came in contact with. While assigned to the downtown clean and safe team, she represented the city well. I never passed Christine without getting my hug. If I was driving, I would pull over and I could always expect my big hug, which made me feel so safe in her arms. Christine was a leader among her peers and just a very kind and well-spoken young lady. She mentored the Delray Beach Police Explorers cadets, was a field training officer for newly hired police officers as well as an instructor at Broward College’s police academy. She spoke to the students in my mentoring program numerous times, and I admired her patience with working with the young ones on the color guard who wanted to play with the rifles instead of following instructions. “Now that is a rifle to be used ceremoniously and not to be pointed at anyone,” she once told a 12-year-old who was horse-playing. He complied, which naturally made me questioned why he listened to her and ignored my many admonishments. She was also a disciplined officer who was a

team player. I recall sitting on her sergeant’s promotional board some years ago and once the results were out, we discussed how she could better prepare herself moving forward. I encouraged her - as I often do with those officers I see with leadership potential - to never give up trying and to immerse herself in the specialty units within the department. Christine served diligently in the training division, on the SWAT team and she had the distinguished honor of being the county’s only female police sniper. She was also a discipline member of the honor guard. I recall while at an event, I being mischievous walked by and whispered something that would normally illicit a smile. She maintained that professional posture and did not flinch. Christine was the third Delray Beach officer to die in a motor vehicle related crash in the department’s history. Officer Johnny Pun was killed, while off duty, on Sept. 10, 2005 when his motorcycle and a pickup truck collided in West Palm Beach. Sgt. Adam Rosenthal also was killed when his squad car struck a palm tree in Boca Raton while enroute to work Feb. 17, 2011. While fatal shootings of law enforcement

personnel often capture national attention, the leading cause of death for police officers is automobile crashes, according to state and national data. I find it ironic that despite all the hazardous duties she did, her life was snuffed out while on vacation, a time to relax and rest. Christine’s kindness extends even in death. She is giving someone a new lease on life as her organs were harvested to be donated. The loss is being felt all across South Florida and well-wishers have been leaving flowers and written tributes on her SUV, which is parked in front of the department. Among the memories though is a large poster with the words “Heroes Never Die.” I could not agree more. Christine, you are a hero and the sacrifice you made will never be forgotten. Your departure is a tremendous loss and a huge vacancy that cannot be filled. As we mourn Christine’s passing, let us also remember Officer Marc and the employees at the Delray Beach police department who are left behind in the broken circle. Let us throw our arms of love and support around them, and please keep them in our prayers.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Be Informed! It is amazing what the current age has brought to humankind, and continues to provide. In a matter of just a few years, information truly exploded, in bringing new tools which accelerate the acquisition of important new facts, especially what can be beneficial to all humans. Sane persons desire to be informed about new trends, about dangers which may be affecting the human race, concerning the threat of terrorist organizations around the globe, about physical maladies which may be spreading world-wide, and pose a threat to everyone wherever anyone may be situation on earth. Information is most vital. People need to lead informed lives. And today

we all have the means of getting information, retaining it, and adding more to it in terms of advances or declines of the same. All humans need to be up-to-date about what is crucial for their daily operation and, especially, for their very survival on earth. We have reached a time in our lives when it is possible to carry the whole world in our hands, as far as having an operative cellular phone which can provide all the basic information one needs about weather conditions, crimes in the neighborhood, threats to one’s security, national and international happenings, and all else that gives one the opportunity to be truly prepared for whatever may come next, as well as to act in the light of what’s taking place right now!

On account of the difficult days in which we live (despite the many advances that have taken place to improve the quality of our life), we still need to take the initiative in seeking whatever will truly help us to live with confidence on account of the information we are constantly being made aware of. Even with respect to weather changes, we need to be prepared with information we secure about conditions that may bring storms, tornadoes, or other potential dangerous situations, based on scientific methods and devices that can help us intelligently to anticipate such alterations. Sadly, there are many people who don’t want to be bothered with the information that is always available. They

www.bocaratontribune.com

consider a waste of time to check the newspapers, to watch television news, to talk intelligently with neighbors and friends about conditions that surround us, wherever we may be. Let us all be more proactive in seeking information with greater diligence, and acting on it accordingly. If that is an activity which is repulsive to you, for some reason, at least find some reliable friend or relative who can keep you well informed, so that changes which are inevitable to occur won’t meet you by surprise, but will allow you to make the necessary plans to avoid the bad consequences of conditions you may have to encounter, whether you like it or not. Whatever be your way, be informed!

sports Coach John McCormack Wins Historic 300th Win at FAU Head Coach By: Zach Evans

On Tuesday, April 4, Florida Atlantic University baseball Head Coach John McCormack won the 300th game of his career as the Owls defeated Rice 8-2 at home. It took McCormack under 500 games to reach this feat. Winning 658 games as an assistant coach and 300 as a head coach, McCormack has been a part of nearly a thousand college baseball wins during this 26-year career at FAU. Many of his players have been recruited locally and are a big reason for his success. The game against Rice started off as many baseball games do in a defensive standoff between two teams. In the top of the first inning, Rice got a hit but did not score during their time at bat. FAU had Tyler Frank hit a ball to the shortstop for an out, Jared Shouppe struck out and Esteban Puerta grounded out to second base. The third inning is when FAU started working its magic. Frank hit a single to left field and Jordan Poore was able to advance to second base. Then Jared Shouppe stepped up to the plate and hit a home run to allow Frank and Poore to score.

Rice was able to get it going in the top of the fourth with two runs after a home run by Dominic DiCaprio to send both him and Ryan Chandler in to score. FAU answered right back in the top of the fourth with a Steven Kerr double, followed by Austin Langham hitting a single to right center to send Kerr in for a score. With the score standing at 4-2, the fifth, sixth, and top of the seventh innings were very defensive with no runs scored. In the bottom of the seventh, FAU’s Kevin Abraham, Poore, and Frank all scored to make it a 7-2 ball game. Rice had two hits but no runs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth FAU scored again and made it an 8-2 ball game. Rice got a hit in the ninth inning but it was not enough to defeat the Owls as FAU went on to win the game 8-2. “Our guys played great today,” said Coach McCormack after the game. “[Pitcher] Jake Miednik kind of walked on a tightrope, but really only made two mistakes all day. Three two-out hits in the seventh… the relief pitching was good, I thought Kevin Abraham caught a great game, and it was really a fantastic win for everybody.”

Owls Bats Beat UCF On The Road, 8-3 The Florida Atlantic Owls improved to 22-9-1 on the season with an 8-3 win over UCF Tuesday night. With the win, the Owls are 8-2 in their last ten games. They remain in third place in the Conference USA at 9-3. FAU cruised into Orlando Tuesday night on the heels of a series victory in Charlotte, North Carolina. They took two of three from the Charlotte 49ers over the weekend and traveled to Orlando on Monday. Tuesday’s game against the Knights was a one-game break from C-USA play. Senior starting pitcher Sean Labsan threw 4.2 innings for the Owls, allowing three runs on four hits. He retired 13 of the first 15 batters he faced. Coach John McCormack remarked, “I am proud of the way the guys came out today. Sean Labsan set the tone on the mound and everyone chipped in offensively.” In the fifth, McCormack handed the ball to Drew Peden. He ultimately took the win with 1.2 scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. After a scoreless first inning, the Owls jumped on Knights starter Trent Thompson for a run in the second. The Owls scored one run in the third, fourth,

and fifth innings off of three different UCF pitchers to lead 4-0. 2B Stephen Kerr and 1B Esteban Puerta both had key doubles early on. The Knights finally got to Labsan in the fifth, scoring three runs and knocking the Owls starter out of the game. 3B Brooks Morgan drove in two runs with a single. UCF’s fifth inning rally proved to be too little though, as FAU’s bats stayed hot all night. They scored a run off of the first seven pitchers UCF used. The Knights used nine total pitchers, none lasting longer than two innings. The Owls’ four-run sixth cemented the win in Orlando. All four of the runs came with two outs due to clutch singles from Kerr, Austin Langham, and David Miranda. After the sixth, Drew Peden, Weston Clemente, Mark Nowatnick, and Kyle Marman combined for 4.1 innings of scoreless relief pitching. The four allowed only one baserunner. Four Owls had multi-hit games, but Kerr and Langham shined with three apiece. The 3-6 hitters all had at least two hits and a RBI. Leadoff hitter Tyler Frank walked and scored twice. Kerr and Puerta also crossed the place two times.
