Community Boca Raton Takes A Stand Against Conversion Therapy By: Bryanna Basilio The Boca Raton City Council has voted to enact an ordinance which prohibits conversion therapy for minors by licensed professionals. The ban to take effect immediately. Deputy Mayor Jeremy Rodgers was the only council member to be opposed to the ordinance saying, “I see it as more as a state health issue and for that I am not in support of the ordinance.” Regardless the ordinance was approved, 1- 4. Conversion therapy, also known as reparative therapy, or sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE), encompasses a range of discredited counseling practices by which health care providers or counselors seek to change a person’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression through aversion treatment. The county’s most effective civil rights organization,The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC), asked the city to enact the ordinance. In the past 29 years, the independent non-profit organization has succeeded in having local public officials enact more than 120 laws and policies providing equal rights, benefits and protection for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ) community. In the past year alone, PBCHRC has been successful in convincing elected officials in West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Riviera Beach, Wellington and Greenacres to prohibit conversion therapy for minors. “The discredited practice of conversion therapy has long been rejected by virtually all of our nation’s mainstream medical, psychiatric, psychological and mental health organizations,” said PBCHRC Board Member Trent Steele who is also an attorney who has spearheaded the yearlong project to ban conversion therapy throughout Palm Beach County. “Instilling self-hatred in children is not therapy,” he said. Dr. Rachel Needle, a licensed psychologist and a leading expert on conversion therapy, notes that the practice of conversion therapy is based on two false premises. “First, it is based on the falsehood that being gay, lesbian or transgender is a mental disorder or defect that needs to be cured,” said Needle. “And second, it is based on the presumption that being LGBTQ is something that can actually be changed through therapy.” Needle, who is also an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern University, states that the potential risks of conversion therapy on children include shame, guilt, depression, decreased selfesteem, increased self-hatred, feelings of anger and betrayal, loss of friends, social withdrawal, problems in sexual and

emotional intimacy, hostility and blame towards parents, high risk behaviors, confusion, self-harm, substance abuse and suicidal ideation. “Any ethical mental health practitioner should not attempt to cure or repair gender identity or sexual orientation through these scientifically invalid techniques,” Needle added. “Attempting to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity can have a devastating impact on a minor.” Boca Raton joins more than a dozen other Florida municipalities -- West Palm Beach, Lake Worth, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Riviera Beach, Miami, Wilton Manors, Miami Beach, Bay Harbor Islands, El Portal, Key West, Wellington, and Tampa. Greenacres has enacted conversion therapy bans for minors as well. In addition, Oakland Park is expected to enact a similar ban on October 18. Before year’s end, Palm Beach County Commissioners will consider a countywide ban. The Boca Raton conversion therapy ordinance and all of the similar ordinances enacted to date applies only to state-licensed therapists. Unlicensed therapists, such as those associated with faith-based groups, retain their religious freedom to engage in such work. Additionally, adults remain free to seek out conversion therapy. Although there have been several court challenges to the constitutionality of banning conversion therapy, all have failed. On four occasions, the U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear challenges to the constitutionality laws banning conversion therapy for minors. State Senator Jeff Clemens (D-Atlantis) introduced a bill for consideration by the 2018 Florida Legislature to prohibit conversion therapy on minors statewide. However, similar bills filed by Clemens in the 2016 and 2017 legislative sessions were never heard. Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie issued the following statement: “While banning conversion therapy does not appear to be a priority action in either Tallahassee or Washington, DC, tonight Boca Raton took another step to protect LGBTQ youth in our city from the harms of conversion therapy. Allowing anyone to expose children to such harm is inconsistent with the values of the City of Boca Raton.” In addition, conversion therapy has been soundly rejected by the American Association of School Administrators, the American Federation of Teachers, the American School Counselor Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the National Education Association and the School Social Work Association of America.

FAU High Student Competes in 3M Young Scientist Challenge

Florida Atlantic University High School freshman Devin Willis will compete to become America’s Top Young Scientist during the Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge on Tuesday, Oct. 17 from 3 to 5 p.m. Willis, 14, is one of 10 finalists competing for the title and a $25,000 prize. Willis developed an innovative machine called SLIDEMAP that increases the speed and accuracy of a cancer diagnosis. Using a 20X microscope, the machine captures several images of a tumor at the cellular level, then uses an algorithm to stitch the images together. The final image is passed through a neural network to analyze the tumor and determine whether it’s benign or cancerous. “I recently read that when pathologists were given the same tissue sample, they agreed on a diagnosis only 75 percent of the time,” he said. “I hope this machine can create more consistency among diagnoses.”

The idea for SLIDEMAP came from Willis’ dad, Scooter Willis, who currently works in data analytics for cancer research. Scooter saw a need for this machine and told Devin about the problem. “My dad knew I loved robotics and computer programming and thought this would be a great project for me,”

he said. Willis has been building and developing SLIDEMAP since he was in sixth grade. Last year, he made a two-minute video about his invention and submitted it to the Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge. He was chosen as a finalist in June. “All of the finalists get to work with a mentor from 3M which has been pretty helpful,” he said. “It’s nice to have the support and input from a real scientist.” Willis isn’t the first FAU High School student to compete for the title of America’s Top Young Scientist. Hannah Herbst, now a sophomore at FAU High, won the competition in 2015 with her ocean energy probe that turns ocean tides into usable power. Herbst later went on to present her project to U.S. President Barack Obama during the 2016 White House Science Fair.

Local Radio Station, a Model in Serving the Community When it comes to community service, one local radio station WHQT FM (Hot-105) radio - gets it. While we were hunkering down for the arrival of Hurricane Irma recently, my friend and fellow community servant “James T.” Thomas and his team at Hot 105 won the prestigious Marconi Award recently as national Urban Station of the Year. The awards were announced at the annual NAB Marconi Radio Awards Dinner and Show in Austin, Texas. Awards were presented in 21 categories. It was the second time in four years that the team has won this award. In today’s era of fake news and canned programing, it is obvious the station’s managers take pride in providing quality news and programming to our community each and every day. This award is a testament to the dedicated staff at the station. Fundamentally, this is what journalism – in particular - broadcasting is all about; serving listeners in our com-

munities and having a positive impact. Iconic Radio Staple Tom Joyner Hangs up Mic After 25 Years It seems like only a few years ago that I began partying with a purpose in the mornings with the launch of the Tom Joyner morning show, which syndicates daily on WHQT Hot 105 radio. Except for doing my daily devotions, I cannot think of a better way for me to start my day than listening to Joyner, who has been a fixture on the airwaves for 25 years. Earlier this week, the “Fly Jock”, as he was once known, announced to his 7.4 million listeners in more than 95 affiliates that he will be hanging up his microphone in two years. “I’m putting in my two-year notice…. At the end of the contract that I just signed, I’m retiring, and for the next two years, we’re going to reminisce, go down Memory Lane and talk about all the things that we’ve done for the past 25 years,” he said. The iconic show easily finds

a unique balance to inform, empower and entertain. And Joyner uses his platform to transform lives every day. I get my dose of news in the African American community from the show, which often features exclusive interviews with the likes of the Rev. Al Sharpton, Roland Martin and New York Daily News columnist Shaun King. I also get a laugh from the list of comedians he adds to his cast every morning. Joyner earned the nickname “Fly Jock” when he hosted a morning show in Dallas and an afternoon show in Chicago, and flew between both cities five days a week, seven years and collected eight million frequent flyer miles. He revolutionized radio in 1994 when he became the first morning show with music in syndication by featuring a live performance by R&B legend Luther Vandross. Over the years, Joyner has not only advanced radio and established

new mediums to inspire people, but he has enriched many lives in our communities. There are countless families whose lives are better thanks to Tom Joyner and his foundation. There are also many in the entertainment businesses who made their big break on Joyner’s show. There was some consolation to the news that although the show will not be on the airwaves, the party will not be over as Joyner promises to continue his activism. “We’ve never wavered from our original goal to entertain, to empower and inform and for the next two years we’ll continue to fight the good fight for the causes important to our audiences - voter registration, policies that impact our community, and raising more than $65 million and counting for my beloved Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” C. POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Disappointments Are Part of Life! Each human life should operate according to a sound plan that helps produce good results. Every individual can experience a purposeful life if plans are in place for the hoped-for outcomes. The good one desires and expects never comes by the mere wish one intensely manifests! Even then, plans also fail, however good and solid they may be! What was expected to bring certain advantages can sometimes produce the very opposite. Obviously, no one ever plans a disap-

pointment as something they eagerly anticipate; people actually avoid such experiences as much as they can. Yet, by what is done or not done ahead of time, frustrations come, disappointments often emerge, becoming an unwelcome reality to be confronted and dealt with in the best possible fashion! The fact that disappointments always occur in a person’s earthly trajectory should not give anyone the excuse for inaction with respect to them. Some may be avoided ahead of time, while all can be dealt with creatively once they

invade one’s human experience. A mere acceptance of the inevitable unpleasantness is no sign of strength but of weakness, since obstacles most often can be overcome. There are resources which God makes available and which human intelligence can utilize! Someone has wisely stated that much that life sometimes forces on us as an unpleasant surprise, is there either to change us for the better, or for us to change it with carefully secured means to overcome the undesirable situation we encounter. Nothing should be al-

lowed to paralyze us in our trajectory toward something better in life! Every challenge demands a corresponding action! Some problems may arise due to our own poor choices, while others affect us adversely on account of somebody else’s human error, or evil intent. In any case, we should not focus on the barriers represented by any disappointing experiences, but lift our gaze above and beyond them where new paths open up for our continued adventure!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida. Walk to Benefit FAU’’ Memory and Wellness Center to Take Place Nov. 5

The Caring Hearts Auxiliary of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center within the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University will host the 12th annual “Keep Memories Alive — Caring Hearts Scores a Touchdown for Scholarships” on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 9 a.m. at the Town Center at Boca Raton, 6000 Glades Road, Boca Raton. The event will begin at the north entrance of the mall. Funds raised from the walk support the Center’s state-of-the art, evidence-based programs and services vital to patients and families living with memory disorders. “We are deeply appreciative of the Caring Hearts Auxiliary and know that every dollar raised is directly making an impact,” said María Ordóñez, DNP, ARNP, director of the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center. Last year, 80 percent of the caregiver programs were funded by the walk proceeds. “Over the past 11 years, we have raised more than $2 million for our walk generated by our unbelievable sponsors and walkers, and 225 families have benefited from the scholarship program supported by the walk,” said Terry Fedele,

president of Caring Hearts and co-chair of the walk with Vanessa Boltz and Morgan Green, board members. “In our 12thyear, we are adding to the amazing energy of the FAU football team by incorporating a ‘touchdown theme.’” Last year, 36 daycare scholarships were funded from last year’s Walk, and the walk raised more than $150,000. The Keep Memories Alive Walk Committee is proud to announce Bobby Campbell and Louis and Anne Green as double diamond sponsors. The honorary family will be the Helen Nikolas family. Boca magazine is the official media sponsor of the walk and honorary ambassadors include Campbell, along with Elaine J. Wold and Christine E. Lynn. Barbara Gutin will serve as the honorary chair of the walk, which will be dedicated in loving memory of Irving Gutin. The Memory and Wellness Center is on FAU’s Boca Raton campus and is part of FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. The Center averages 10,000 visits per year and offers a wide range of services and programs to individuals with mild to moderate memory disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. They also support their families and caregivers.

October 15-21 To Be “Friends of the Library Week” programs. Also covered by the gift was funding for new technology and databases, including Maker and coding classes; and other youth programs such as the annual Library Tea event. The funding went a long way for the library, ultimately supporting multiple librarydriven reading initiatives as well. Clearly, the Friends organization does a great deal to further the Boca Raton Library. Their work never goes unnoticed. Ann Nappa, the Manager of Library Services, remarked, “We are grateful for the City’s leadership in shining a spotlight on the tremendous value that the Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library bring to the BRPL.” Nappa continued, “The staff has been able to bring many opportunities and resources to the community of Boca Raton thanks to the generous support and funding of the Friends’ members and volunteers.” Mayor Haynie’s proclamation joins multiple libraries across the country in celebrating the American Library Association’s annual event to bring attention to Friends of the Libraries throughout the country. The announcement brings focus to a very helpful volunteer cause.

By: Jack Rubin Mayor Susan Haynie has made strides in supporting the library during her tenure, perhaps none bigger than her most recent action. Mayor Haynie issued a proclamation declaring that October 15-21, 2017 is “Friends of the Library” Week in the City of Boca Raton. The proclamation commends the Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library group for their helpfulness in the City. Friends is a non-profit volunteer and membership based organization that acts to support the events occurring at the library. Part of the City’s acknowledgement of the organization includes praise for the Friends’ support of BRPL’s mission, encouraging providing education, 21st century learning tools, programs and events for residents of all ages. Youth and adult educational programs endorsed by the library are the chief beneficiaries of the Friends funds. The group raises money through membership dues, bookstore sales, and donations. Earlier this year, the Friends of the Library gifted the library with money to help fund summer reading

Second Duffy’s Sports Grill to Open in Boca Raton Delayed Duffy’s Sports Grill, Florida’s premier family-owned sports-themed restaurant, had announced they would open their second Boca Raton location on Friday, October 27th. However, that has been delayed a week and will now open November 3. Located in the Mission Bay Plaza at 20465 South State Rd #7, this will be their 35th location as the company continues to expand throughout the state. Hiring for the location, which will fill over 150 full and part-time positions, began this week . This new location in West Boca comes on the heels of Duffy’s recent groundbreaking of what will be their 36th restaurant in South Port St. Lucie. “Since our first Boca location opened in 2002, we have heard countless times that our MVPs wished we had another location further west,” said Duffy’s Sports Grill President, Jason Emmett. “When we learned of the opportunity in the Mission Bay Plaza we knew it would be a perfect location for us. The West Boca area has always been a market we’ve wanted to have a presence in, and we look forward to welcoming our new neighbors, as well as

our existing MVP’s, to dine in our newest location. The 9,000-square-foot restaurant will offer extensive indoor and outdoor seating for up to 324 patrons, including a large lakefront patio. 90 high definition 65-inch 4K flat screen TV’s will broadcast all satellite sports action, and all customers can look forward to enjoying over 20 ice cold beers on tap and 2 for 1 drinks all day every day in their spacious bar and cocktail areas complete with sleek, upscale décor and iconic sports memorabilia. A dedicated take-out area will serve guests who prefer to dine at home, and a semi-private dining room will provide an ideal venue for private parties and corporate events. The restaurant will feature freshly prepared, made-from-scratch dishes which Duffy’s is known for, including their Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl, award-winning halfpound Certified Angus Beef burgers, falloff-the-bone baby back ribs, Lobster Tacos, Jump Lump Crab Mac & Cheese, a variety of signature salads, and specialty handcraft-

FAU Re-Launches Public Ethics Academy Florida Atlantic University has re-launched the Public Ethics Academy within the School of Public Administration at the College for Design and Social Inquiry. “We are excited about the re-launch of the Public Ethics Academy,” said Wesley Hawkins, Ph.D., dean of the College for Design and Social Inquiry. “It is more important than ever before for us to provide a platform for the discussion and support of high ethical standards for those who serve our communities.” The Public Ethics Academy was first organized by FAU in 2009 to research ethics and provide training for local government agencies. Recently, Peter L. Cruise, Ph.D., was appointed executive director of the Academy upon its re-launch. Cruise graduated from FAU in 1995 and in 2015 was named a College for Design and Social Inquiry distinguished alumnus. “Working to promote ethical behavior, especially in the public sector, has long been a focus of my academic

and professional careers,” said Peter Cruise, Ph.D., executive director of the Public Ethics Academy. “In 2009, FAU also recognized the need to weigh in on public sector ethics with the formation of the Public Ethics Academy. I am honored to be back at FAU as we expand the Academy’s programs and services throughout the University.” The University-based nature of the Academy, housed at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, allows for the rapid incorporation and dissemination of the latest scholarly research on ethics issues by noted faculty for the Academy’s training programs. “Peter Cruise brings a lot of energy, dedication and expertise to his new role as executive director of the Public Ethics Academy,” said Steven Bourassa, Ph.D., director of the School of Public Administration. “I am very excited about the prospects for the Academy under his capable leadership.”

Funding for this organization is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council, Funding Arts Broward (FAB!), and with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs and the Cultural Affairs Council, the Miami-Dade County Mayor and Board of County Commissioners.

Palm Beach State College Among Aspen Prize Top Community Colleges Palm Beach State College is once again among the top 150 community colleges in the nation eligible to compete for the coveted 2019 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The $1 million Aspen Prize is the signature recognition of high achievement in America’s community colleges. Using publicly available data on student outcomes, the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program chose the top 150 community colleges from nearly 1,000 public two-year colleges. PBSC has been on the list each year since the award began in 2011. This year, 14 Florida colleges are on the list. “We’re proud to be considered one of the top 150 colleges in the country,’’ said Dr. Roger Yohe, vice president of academic affairs. “The fact that we continue to make the list is a testament to our efforts to help students succeed.” Awarded every two years, the Aspen Prize recognizes institutions with outstanding achievements in four areas: learning; certificate and degree completion; employment and earnings, and high levels of access and success for minority and low-

income students. Yohe said PBSC has implemented advisement and enrollment management strategies that have helped boost the retention and completion rates. He said the retention rate for one fall term to the next is 67 percent. He also said that 96 percent of students who complete their education at PBSC get a job or successfully transfer to a university. “We have a student-centered learning environment with our faculty focused on student success beyond their individual classrooms. We have an increased focus on continuous improvement, and those colleges that get recognized have those key elements in place.” PBSC must now submit an application for the next phase of the competition. After the rigorous process, the top 10 finalists will be named in May 2018. The Aspen Institute will then visit the finalists to collect additional qualitative data. An Aspen Prize jury will choose a grand prize winner, finalists with distinction and rising stars in spring 2019.

AT&T Boosts Network Performance at FAU Stadium

AT&T has boosted its mobile internet coverage at FAU Stadium. When a big play happens, students can now enjoy stronger connections as they share the moment with friends and family. We have added 51 antennas and 25,000 miles of cable to our Distributed Antenna System (DAS) at the stadium. The result is a 200% increase in capacity. This means our network there can now handle more traffic and provide faster data speeds. A DAS is made of numerous, small antennas that distribute AT&T wireless network coverage. It shortens the distance a call or text must travel. Calls, texts and posts are less likely to get stuck in a “traffic jam” of other calls, texts and posts.

www.bocaratontribune.com

“We want our customers to have a great network experience at FAU Stadium. We’ve improved our network so they can easily make a call, post pictures or download apps at the game,” said Joe York, AT&T Florida president. AT&T constantly invests in our Florida network to give customers the high-quality services they need to stay connected. This helps them get the best possible network experience, whether at home, at work or on the go. For more information about AT&T coverage in South Florida or anywhere in the U.S., go to the AT&T Coverage Viewer. For updates on the AT&T wireless network, please visit the AT&T network news page.

columnists ROBERT’S COMMUNITY REPORT

FAITH By Rick Warren

By Robert Weinroth • The Mayor and I joined Governor Scott and Agricultural Commissioner Adam Putnam in Washington DC as he spearheaded our “ask” at a meeting with members of the Florida Congressional Delegation. • Thirty elected leaders participated in the Florida League of Cities Fast Fly-in to secure commitments from our Members of Congress to support Rep. Frankel’s bill to limit de-obligations (a/k/a “clawbacks”) by FEMA. The City of Boca is currently faced with a FEMA “clawback” claim of over $4 million from Wilma (12 years ago). Due, in part, to the pressure brought to bear on our storm debris hauler, the threatened increase in cleanup costs (doubling the contract rate) was rolled back saving our residents millions in extra fees! • FAU continues to demonstrate it’s not satisfied with being anything but the best. The term “Unbridled Ambition” has been used by FAU President John Kelly to make it clear that he expects only greatness from Florida Atlantic University. • This week the Council on Undergraduate Research selected Florida Atlantic University as one of three recipients of the 2017 Award for Undergraduate Research Accomplishments. This national award recognizes institutions that have developed exemplary programs that provide high-quality research, scholarship and creative experiences for undergraduates. • FAU’s Office of Undergraduate Research and Inquiry was commended on its “Distinction through Discovery” program, which aims to improve student learning by creating a culture of undergraduate research at the University. • The 14th Annual Boca Raton Regional Hospital Foundation Go Pink Luncheon was held at the Boca Raton Resort & Club with celebrated journalist, author and breast cancer survivor, Joan Lunden. The Luncheon raised over $1 million for the benefit of the Go Pink Challenge and the fight against cancer at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. London, who famously appeared on the cover of People Magazine shaved bald while she was undergoing chemotherapy, surgery and radiation, has made it her mission to to empower women to be vigilant about their breast cancer screening and to become their own health advocates. • It’s hard to imagine the City of Boca Raton, Florida without the indelible imprint made to its DNA by IBM. Home of the Personal Computer, 50 years ago a team of two dozen IBM employees came to Boca Raton to transfer the nascent manufacturing and marketing operations for their low end mainframe for the system 360 model 20 from San Jose CA to Site X (Boca Raton). The new employees braved alligators, “walking” catfish and a municipal infrastructure playing catch-up with the sudden influx of new residents. The city

of Boca Raton is joining with IBM alumnae to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of IBM Boca Raton, a company that fundamentally changed the way we learn, do business and communicate. • South Florida families experienced the excitement around the change of seasons at the 1st Annual Boca Pumpkin Patch Festival that took place October 14 & 15 at Mizner Park Amphitheater. The Boca Pumpkin Patch Festival featured a variety of fun activities for the whole family, including a giant pumpkin patch in the center of all the action with more than 2,500 pumpkins and a carnival for all ages! Plus, families enjoyed our fall-themed attractions such as a corn stalk maze, a dressyour-own scarecrow village and beautiful fall photo vignettes! Included in the entrance fee were unlimited carnival rides, our fall attractions, and on-going shows & activities on our main stage! • As a result of increased attendance, the 3rd Annual Boca Raton Mayors Ball moved to the Boca Raton Resort & Club this week. The event honors the City’s elected officials who exemplify Rotary International’s motto, ‘Service Above Self ’ and visionaries past and present who have elevated the community while raising funds to the support health and wellness needs of Boca Raton nonprofits. • The highlight of the night was the presentation of the George Long Awards – named for the City’s first appointed mayor in 1924. This year’s event honored the following that have each championed the tradition of bringing indelible visionary ideas and transformation to Boca Raton, Bobby Cambell (Individual), Florida Atlantic University (Nonprofit) and Kaufman Lynn Construction. • Burtons Grill & Bar opened this week and Allison Lewis, associate editor at Boca Raton Magazine, reviewed the new restaurant and concluded, Burtons Grill & Bar, which s located at 5580 N Military Trl in Boca’s Park Place shopping center (at the far corner of the plaza, detached and on its own food island of sorts, in the parking lot). This is the first Florida location for owner Denise Baron Herrera, who has been with the company since its infancy. She originally started at Burtons as a chef, and most of the recipes on the menu today are her originals. • Since the founding of the very first Soroptimist club in Oakland, California in 1921, Soroptimist International has sought to bring about change to the lives of women and girls worldwide. Each year Soroptimist International of Boca Raton/Deerfield Beach hosts Woman of Distinction Breakfast. They honor the women of our community who are making a difference in the lives of others. This year Barbara Gutin received the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award and Terry Fedele served as Honorary Chairperson.

How To Be Thankful in Tough Times What do you do when faced with a situation that seems beyond your control? Perhaps business is not going well, you are facing major financial difficulties, or a personal situation seems to defy resolution. What do you do – worry about it? The Bible offers some very interesting insight into this and suggests that instead of worrying, we simply should be thankful: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done” (Philippians 4:6). Let’s take a closer look at this advice: 1. Don’t worry about anything. Worrying doesn’t change anything. You could call it “stewing without doing.” There is no such thing as a born worrier; worry is a learned response. You probably learned it from your parents. If not, you learned it from your peers, or you learned it from experience. That is good news – the fact that worry is learned means it can also be unlearned. Jesus says, “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today” (Matthew 6:34). 2. Pray about everything. Use the time you would spend worrying by praying instead. If you prayed as much as you worried, you would have a whole lot less to worry about. Some people think God only cares about things such as how many people attend church or how much money we give to religious causes. But God is interested in everything, even car payments and aching joints. He is concerned with every detail of your life. That means you can take any problem that you are facing to God.

3. Thank God in all things. Whenever you pray, you should always pray with thanksgiving. The healthiest human emotion, psychology experts tell us, is not love, but gratitude. Being thankful actually increases your immunities; it makes you more resistant to stress and less susceptible to illness. People who are grateful are happy. But people who are ungrateful are miserable because nothing makes them happy. They are never satisfied; nothing is ever good enough. So if you cultivate the attitude of gratitude, learning to be thankful in everything, it reduces stress in your life. 4. Think about the right things. If you want to reduce the level of stress in your life, you must change the way you think. The way you think determines how you feel, and the way you feel determines how you act. So if you want to change your life, you need to change what you are thinking about. This involves a deliberate, conscious choice where you change the channels of your mind, much like you would change the channels on your TV: You can choose to think about the right things, focus on the positive and on God’s Word. Why should you do this? Because the root cause of stress is the way you choose to think. Think properly and positively and you will minimize the stress in your life. When we no longer worry, when we pray about everything, when we give thanks, when we focus on the right things, the apostle Paul assures us the result will be, “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7). sports Shadi Harb Returns for Third Season with Boca Raton FC

Boca Raton, FL -- Boca Raton Football Club is pleased to announce that Shadi Harb, who captained the club’s inaugural National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) season, has returned for his third season with the club. Harb played in nine contests in the 2017 NPSL Season and recorded two goals while playing 701 minutes, the third highest average last season. “Shadi is a team player, and a competitor,” says team president Douglas Heizer. “He is one of the longest tenured Boca Raton FC players and we are excited to have him continue his career in Boca Blue.” A youth academy product of Independiente Santa Fe, of the Colombian

first division, Harb played with the club until he turned professional in 2005. Since then, Harb has played for America de Cali, Fortaleza FC, and Cienciano of the Peruvian Second Division. “I’m excited for the upcoming season. I feel happy I can still do what I love and to represent an organization such as Boca Raton FC,” said Harb. “I’m definitely looking forward to getting back in the field and keep working hard to meet the team’s goals for the upcoming season.” Throughout his three-year career at Boca Raton FC, Harb has played in over 66 matches overall between the American Premier Soccer League, Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, and NPSL.

Lynn Soccer Draws Against Tampa, Remains Second in Conference

By: Jack Rubin Lynn University Men’s Soccer played to a 2-2 draw versus the Tampa Spartans on Saturday, a game that saw the Fighting Knights lead for over 25 minutes. The No. 9 Knights remain in second place in the Sunshine State Conference with a record of 9-1-1. Tampa jumped out to a quick lead on the heels of a Juancho Fernandez goal in the 6th minute. Lynn entered halftime trailing, but it took the Fighting Knights just twenty seconds to find the back of the net in the second half. The goal was junior Tomer Bitton’s third of the year, matching his totals from his freshman and sophomore seasons. Senior Alun Webb gave the Knights the lead in the 60th minute on a penalty kick. The goal was his teamleading seventh of the season. Webb is a perfect 3-3 on penalty kicks in 2017. Lynn’s lead held until the 87th minute, when Tampa’s Knut Soeren Hovet scored on a header to level it at two. Although Lynn outshot the

Spartans 19-14, Tampa recorded one more shot on goal than the Knights, plus four corner kicks to Lynn’s zero. The game also marked defenseman Simon Kraemer’s season debut. The German’s presence was felt as he assisted on Bitton’s goal in the 46th minute. The Knights’ record against Tampa under manager John Rootes moved to 9-6-2 after the game. It was Lynn’s first draw of the season, improving their point total to fifteen, though it was not the three points the Knights desired from the game. Lynn remains ninth in the country in Division II soccer. Fellow Sunshine State Conference foes Palm Beach Atlantic and Florida Tech also fifth and twelfth, respectively. Palm Beach Atlantic handed Lynn their only loss of the season in a 1-0 game on October 4. Lynn trails Atlantic by three points in the Sunshine State Conference. The Fighting Knights will travel to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech in a massive conference matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
