Community PBS and FAU Partner For Iconic Public Television Series Star Gazers South Florida PBS (WPBT and WXEL) signature series Star Gazers, the world's only weekly television series on naked eye astronomy since 1976, will launch a new season on public television with a new host and university science partner beginning December 1, 2019. Each weekly episode of Star Gazers educates viewers about astronomical events for the upcoming week that can be seen without the aid of a telescope, including key constellations, stars and planets, lunar eclipses and conjunctions, along with historical and scientific information about these events. The popular astronomy series has continued in distribution from South Florida PBS (originally as WPBT) since the beloved original award-winning series hosted by the late Miami Space Transit Planetarium executive director Jack Horkheimer. Since Horkheimer's passing in 2010 Star Gazers has retained the spirit of accessible astronomy Horkheimer established, with the current hosts encouraging viewers to "Keep looking up!" at the close of each program. "From the beginning, WPBT has brought Star Gazers to public television in partnership with Miami's top astronomers, and South Florida PBS (WPBT and WXEL) is proud to continue that legacy nearly 50 years on," said South Florida PBS's president and CEO, Dolores Sukhdeo. "We couldn't ask for better support in this endeavor than Dr. Ata Sarajedini and the team at Florida Atlantic University, or for a more enthusiastic guide for our viewers than Trace Dominguez." New series host Trace Dominguez is widely praised as an award-winning and inspiring science communicator, content creator and curiosity explorer. His decade of work as a science educator includes the launch of one of YouTube's first daily science shows among his doz-

ens of popular online channels dedicated to discovery; the Webby-winning launch of a 360-degree camera on a weather balloon to the stratosphere; and cohosted segments with President Obama during the White House's Science Week. Said Dominguez of his new role on Star Gazers as an ambassador of astronomy, "If it's out there, I'm looking for a better way to understand it - and I'm very excited to join my new friends in public television for this adventure." Series consultant Ata Sarajedini, Ph.D., Dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at Florida Atlantic University and Scientific Editor for the Journals of the American Astronomical Society, added, "Star Gazers is a unique opportunity for FAU to share our strengths as a research university in a way that benefits the community at large and opens up astronomy to everyone. We are grateful for this partnership with South Florida PBS and hope to expand upon it with future projects." The award-winning astronomer has made extensive use of the Hubble Space Telescope and has an exceptional 'h-index' scholar score of 45 for scientific publication. Star Gazers guides viewers to search the skies based on visibility in the eastern United States, but viewers across the country in different time zones can still benefit from the short episodes that public television stations air either between regularly scheduled programming or online. In addition to the weekly briefs on current events in the night sky, the series includes 'evergreen' segments about astronomical phenomena like black holes. The episodes may also be used as part of classroom teaching plans. Major funding for Star Gazers is provided by The Batchelor Foundation; The William J. and Tina Rosenberg Foundation; and Trish and Dan Bell.

PBSC partners with U.S. Sugar to provide training

Palm Beach State College has signed a contract with U.S. Sugar Corporation to provide onsite courses for students in the company’s training program at its Clewiston site. The courses are being taught by Belle Glade campus faculty for students in the Industrial Skills Training Academy that the company recently launched to grow its own talent. In addition to PBSC, which provides general education courses in algebra, chemistry, physics and welding, U.S. Sugar’s other training partners include representatives from companies that manufacture its high-tech equipment. Students are learning welding, machining and electrical skills. Students get paid by U.S. Sugar while they are in the three-year program, and they are offered a job when they successfully finish. “We have several machines that they don’t have in any other industry that they’re going to be training on,’’ said Donald Messer, industrial skills

development manager at U.S. Sugar. Dr. LaTanya McNeal, Belle Glade campus executive dean, said the support from the College benefits not only the students in the program but also the community. She helped facilitate the partnership along with Edward Willey, dean of academic affairs; Dr. Kristy Taylor, interim associate dean of academic affairs; Roberto Carballoso, interim assistant dean of student services; Professor Alvin Johnson; Learning Specialist Dr. Amaury Suarez, and the Corporate & Continuing Education/ Workforce Development office. “Palm Beach State College is excited to partner with U.S. Sugar to provide instructional support for their new technical skills training program,’’ she said. “Through our collaboration we are able to prepare individuals for lucrative paying jobs in the trades industry and support a workforce in the community which has a high demand for skilled workers.”

FAU Ranks In Top 50 In Top Programs For Entrepreneurs Florida Atlantic University has been recognized as one of the top programs for entrepreneurship studies, according to the latest rankings from The Princeton Review . FAU ranked No. 39 among undergradu ate programs in The Princeton Review’s 14th annual survey. Based on data collected from more than 300 schools with offerings in entrepreneurship studies, The Princeton Review's ranking lists for 2020 name 50 undergraduate and 25 graduate schools as outstanding choices for students aspiring to become entrepreneurs. “This is great recognition for our program, which features excellent instructors, many of whom are extensively published expert researchers in all aspects of entrepreneurship and many of whom have strong experience themselves as entrepreneurs,” said Roland Kidwell, Ph.D., director of the Adams Center for Entrepreneurship and chair of the Department of Management Programs in FAU’s College of Business. “Through our undergraduate program and the college’s Adams Center for Entrepreneurship, we encourage and assist our students to refine their ideas for new ventures through the process of developing and testing a business model, writing a business plan, starting the business and seeking outside investment to grow the business.” In addition to entrepreneurship coursework, FAU offers boot camps to any FAU student, faculty or community entrepreneur, access to experienced mentors, business plan competitions, and engagements to assist local entrepreneurs and family firms with important projects. Integration with other university initiatives such as Tech Runway, the WAVE Competition, the Kenan Social Engagement Program and the Phil Smith Center for Free Enterprise combine to provide the necessary elements for a highly suc-

cessful entrepreneurship program. “A key platform of the university’s strategic plan is entrepreneurship, so we strive to have every one of our students leave the university with a mindset for innovation, even if they don’t plan to become entrepreneurs right away,” said Daniel Gropper, Ph.D., dean of the College of Business. “We have more than a dozen research faculty who are thought leaders in this area, publishing books and papers in top academic journals to help us all better understand such issues as what economic policies best support small businesses and entrepreneurs, what financing options help make entrepreneurs most successful, what educational programs serve entrepreneurs best, and how can we help address the unique challenges family businesses and other entrepreneurs face.” The Princeton Review posted the full lists and methodology at www. princetonreview.com/entrepreneur, where they can be accessed for free with site registration. The Princeton Review tallied the 2020 lists based on its June– August 2019 survey of administrators at undergraduate and graduate schools offering entrepreneurship studies. Entrepreneur, which announced the results of the annual survey in conjunction with The Princeton Review, has posted the full lists at www.entrepreneur. com/topcolleges. The magazine will also publish the lists and a feature on the rankings in its December issue available on newsstands Tuesday, Nov. 19. “These schools have truly robust offerings in entrepreneurship studies,” said Rob Franek, The Princeton Review’s editor in chief. “Their faculties are outstanding. Their courses are rich with in-class and out-of-class experiential components, and the financial and networking support their students receive is extraordinary.”

Lynn University named Apple Distinguished School Lynn University announced it is an Apple Distinguished School for 2019–22. This marks the fourth consecutive Apple Distinguished School designation recognizing Lynn for innovation in learning, teaching and academic accomplishment. Lynn launched its award-winning iPad-powered learning curriculum in 2013. In the years since, the university upgraded to iPad Pro, launched a digital press to support mobile learning and unveiled Lynn 2025—a strategic plan to engage, elevate, and expand through innovative curriculum, technology and campus design. Most recently, Lynn demonstrated how athletes and coaches use iPad technology to support their success. According to Chief Strategy and Technology Officer Christian Boniforti, Wi-Fi-enabled buses and training facilities allow student-athletes to hone their sports and stay on track to graduation. “Our mobile ecosystem helps student-athletes

and coaches stay productive on the road,” he said. Despite rigorous travel and training schedules, the Fighting Knights earned an average GPA of 3.25 during the 2018–19 academic year; 10% scored a perfect 4.0. Coaches and athletes also stay connected on the court with iPad and useful apps including Video Delay and VidSwap that provide access to live stats and instant replays. Teams can evaluate performance, opponent tendencies and strategy in real time. Lynn continues to expand its use of technology in the classroom for all students. In 2019, it was one of the first institutions to pilot Everyone Can Create, a free curriculum designed by Apple to help educators integrate creative skills into every subject that they teach. The university also plans to integrate Everyone Can Code, Apple’s comprehensive program that gives everyone the power to learn, write and teach code.

Send A Deserving Child to Music Camp This Winter Busy schedules during the school year often limit time spent on music education. That’s why the Boca Raton Tribune is partnering with one of our local youth agencies to send budding musicians to a weeklong, multi-venue learning experience over the winter break. They will receive a rare chance to try a new instrument, deepen their mettle on one they’re already studying, or build on their knowledge of music instruction. Through this priceless, fun-filled experience, a team of highly qualified and internationally traveled instructors will teach 35 local middle and high school students the social and historic importance of the Blues, the importance of critical thinking and collaboration, how to read music, improvise, play by ear as well as to perform with confidence at the Fernando Jones’ Blues Camp International-Palm Beach 2020. Students are chosen based on auditions. An additional 10 former Blues Kids from around the country will attend the camp. This youth development live music project is designed to promote global citizenship, academic excellence, discipline, collegiality and musicianship with a focus on learning to perform songs by ear. It has long been

known that students who study music usually excel academically. This summer, I traveled to Chicago to watch that city’s Blue Kids Foundation present Fernando Jones’ Blues Camp in conjunction with Columbia College. Jones, founder of the Blues Camp concept, is a highly respected blues figure in Chicago and music professor at Columbia College, Chicago. He has produced blues music camps around the world since 2010 and has been performing professionally for more than 30 years. I was so impressed to see how fast students were able to craft lines into very singable odes, while empathizing with their campmates’ sagas. It was more than a history lesson; it was captivation. I watched youth go from scribblers to lyricists, shy to stage-ready in just a few days. The camp, which is hosted by KOP Mentoring Network and sponsored in part by the Riviera Beach CDC, will be held at the Arts Garage in Delray Beach from Dec. 29 until Jan. 4. The campers will attend workshops from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and will perform in front of friends, family and the general public at various locations across Palm Beach County in the evening. There, they will demonstrate

and present what they learned in class. On Jan. 30, they will perform at the Riviera Beach Marina Village and Tuesday, Jan. 31, they are scheduled to present at Faith’s Place in West Palm Beach. After a break on New Year’s Day, they will show out at the Bamboo Room in Lake Worth Thursday night and Friday night, they will be at the Paradise Lounge in Delray Beach. The camp will conclude on Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Arts Garage. Among the highlights of the week will be the integration of a range of fun enriching activities - learning about marine and undersea life from Florida Fishing Academy and painting on canvas from The Great Paint Escape on Wheels - into the student’s daily schedules, making the educational experience richer and more memorable. These children stand to reap huge benefits from this cultural enrichment experience. They’ll build friendships and learn life skills in a nurturing environment with likeminded others. Your gift of $150 will provide a child a tuition waiver scholarship to open his or her life up to a future of boundless possibilities. Donors will be recognized weekly in

The Boca Raton Tribune and on KOPMN’s website. POSITIVE LIVING By Robert J. Tamasy

Remembering to be Thankful - at all times What are you thankful for – your career, your family, your health, financial prosperity? How often do you pause to ponder or reflect on the positives in your life – to be genuinely thankful? And when you do give thanks, to whom, or what, do you express your gratitude? For many people in the United States, this week marks two important events: The official start of the Christmas season (although for many retailers, that began around the middle of August), and the observance of Thanksgiving Day, a holiday in which men, women and children offer thanks for their blessings in life. For some, it is a time to direct attention to the God who bestows those blessings. Others focus their thankfulness elsewhere – perhaps to good fortune, their own efforts, or random circumstances. Personally, I offer thanks to God, whom the Bible describes as the Creator,

November 22 - November 28, 2019

provider and sustainer of all that is, ever has been and ever will be. I recognize that I possess certain gifts and abilities, but also understand I did nothing to earn them. I certainly could not purchase them anywhere. I believe the Lord gave them to me to develop and use in bringing glory to Him. And for that, and many other things, I thank Him. At the same time, I do not believe thanksgiving should be confined to a particular day or season. One of the earliest Bible verses I learned admonishes, “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). As I understand it, “in all circumstances” or “in everything” (as another translation terms it) means…in all circumstances. In everything. So, this means we are to give thanks not only for good things that happen in our lives, what we typically define as

our “blessings,” but also for difficult, even painful circumstances. Another passage presents it this way: “In every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6). It is east to feel gratitude at those times when everything seems to be going well. All the bills are paid; we have more than enough clothes to wear; we have a roof over our heads and food in the refrigerator; we have not had any health setbacks; we find our work enjoyable and rewarding. As some might say, “It’s all good!” However, we all have learned that in life, hardships and adversities do occur. Emergencies happen, upsetting our budgets. We or someone we love receive a concerning medical report. Our jobs become tedious, frustrating, even agonizing – yet we have no better options. How do we remain thankful at times like that? I think we find the answer in the Scriptures. Our focus

www.bocaratontribune.com

should be on God, who promises to always be with us and to meet our needs, not on our circumstances, no matter how troubling they may be. In a well-known psalm, the writer describes numerous setbacks and admits, “In my anguish I cried to the Lord.” But then he adds, “and he answered by setting me free. The Lord is with me, I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Psalm 118:5-6). Having this assurance, at both the beginning and the end of the psalm, he is able to exhort his readers, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:1,29). When we trust that God is in control, we can give thanks to Him in good times and bad times. We can, as another Psalm tells us, “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise His name” (Psalm 100:4).

Erte Collection Cocktail Reception

Benefits of Being Authentic

My travels this week took me to Fort Lauderdale’s North Miami Gallery for a view of a huge collection of 1920’s style Erte collection statues. It was an awesome collection and there were many Boca faces in the large crowd.

How do you feel when you suspect someone is not being authentic or genuine, when it appears that individual is putting on an act – a “façade” – to make a desired impression with the people he or she is with at the time? Such behavior can sometimes be described as “hypocrisy.” The root of this word comes from the Greek, a term used to identify an actor, someone who wears a mask, as they did in ancient times. When we watch a movie or attend a live theatrical performance, we accept someone doing this because that is the actor’s job. They may portray characters very unlike who they really are, but we understand that is what “acting” is all about. However, witnessing such behavior in everyday life is not as defensible. We want people to be authentic – to say what they truly mean and be who they really are, not to present themselves falsely for a desired effect. We commonly observe this contradiction in the political scene: elected officials and candidates making speeches in which they say what they believe the audience wants to hear. Later, if public opinion polls indicate a shift, they start saying things very different. Of course, this also occurs in the business and professional world. A former CEO of United Van Lines, Rich McClure, candidly shared at one of our events that one day he was talking with some people near his assistant’s desk. After their departure, his assistant said to him, “People can tell when you’re authentic and when you’re not.” This was very convicting for

Rich, because the assistant was right. He had just put on a show for these people, trying to impress them and elicit a certain response. This was obvious to his assistant – and likely to his guests as well. Rich humbly accepted this well-intended rebuke and determined to learn from it and act differently in the future. Being authentic in all of our interactions, whether in the workplace, our homes, or our communities, is not always easy. We want people to think well of us, and it can be tempting to misrepresent ourselves, our companies or our products if it seems this will help in achieving the desired result. However, people can sense a lack of sincerity, when we are not being genuine. “Putting on a mask” in real life can have very detrimental consequences. This is why the Bible often speaks of the importance of being authentic, giving people the assurance that “what you see is what you get.” Psalm 15:1-2 teaches, “Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain? The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart.” Another passage speaks of a benefit of being authentic, warning against trying to mislead or deceive. “The man of integrity walks securely, but he who take crooked paths will be found out” (Proverbs 10:9). In the workplace, regardless of the external circumstances, we should all strive to be known for our authenticity. As Proverbs 24:26 states, “An honest answer is like a kiss on the lips.” Heizer Media Group

Entrepreneur Encourages PBA Students to Embrace Opportunities

The Boca Raton Tribune

obituary Karen L. (Stetson) Newman

Serial entrepreneur Jennifer Kushell has been in business since she was a teenager. Her family vacations were at franchise conferences. At 15, she was reading “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by the pool and having dinner with the founder of Pizza Hut and his wife. Kushell encouraged students to embrace similar opportunities afforded to them through the Titus Center for Franchising when she spoke to an auditorium full of students, faculty and advisory board members Wednesday morning. In franchising, “once you’re in the field, you have lifetime employment,” Kushell said. Kushell is CEO and founder of Young & Successful Media and YSN. com, where she creates campaigns around youth empowerment, employment and entrepreneurship. Those campaigns included the 100-country Subway Global Challenge and the International Franchise Association’s NextGen in Franchising campaign. Currently, Kushell is CEO of EYP Ventures, short for Exploring Your Potential™. The online career-readiness program inspires young adults to create a life and career customized to their talents, passions and goals. In October, venture capitalists backed the company. “I like to tell people the world is a candy store of opportunity, and I want to create a magic carpet ride for you,” Kushell said. During Kushell’s freshman year of college, she created the Young Entrepreneurs Network, the first online network for young people trying to start their own companies. Those in the network came from 75 countries, and the effort caught the attention of CNN and Entrepreneur magazine. None of her ideas was part of a big business plan. It was her entrepreneurial mind saying, “Why don’t we do this?” and occasionally getting someone to pay for it, she said. Early on, Kushell made it a point

to go to the International Franchise Association conference, which gave her access to business owners, staff, investors and media and with which the Titus Center has many connections. “Even if you don’t know a single person, you walk in, and you’re exposed to the entire ecosystem,” Kushell said. The association, recognizing that many young people didn’t understand the industry, eventually hired Kushell to build a video and website to educate them about career paths in franchising. Those opportunities include working in a franchise, investing in one or building a business that can be franchised. Franchising is a “business model that helps you scale big ideas,” Kushell said. Additionally, she helped birth the NextGen in Franchising Global Competition, which drew people from 50 countries to the United States for an entrepreneurial challenge. “I purposely went after the emerging markets,” Kushell said. The 2015 winner of that competition was Galen Welsch, a Colorado native who started Jibu in Kampala, Uganda. Jibu hires African franchisees to purify, bottle and sell clean drinking water in places where it is in short supply. A woman carrying a Jibu water bottle in Kampala graced the cover of Franchise Times magazine that year, becoming the first woman from an emerging market to earn the honor, Kushell said. Kushell is unafraid of traveling the world or being the only woman in the room, just as she wasn’t afraid of being the only 19-year-old in the room at franchising conferences during her college years. Being different makes you special and makes people curious about you, she said. “You have unbelievable opportunities at your fingertips right here, right now,” Kushell told students. “You choose your trajectory. You choose how far you want to go with the effort you put in.”

– Karen L. (Stetson) Newman, 58, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday morning, November 13, 2019 after an epic 11-year battle with breast cancer. Karen was born in Denver, Colorado on April 12, 1961 to Jack and Roberta (Baker) Stetson. She graduated from Jamesville-DeWitt High School in Syracuse, NY, where she lettered in track and field and was a member of the National Honor Society. She went on to the University of Vermont, earning a BS in Nutrition and Dietetics, and achieved her master’s degree and RD at Rush University, ultimately serving as President of the Vermont Association of Nutrition and Dietetics (VAND), a proud capstone of her professional career. Her favorite place in the world was the family cabin on Lake Champlain in Charlotte, VT where she enjoyed many spectacular sunsets. A gifted athlete, Karen excelled at all sports, but speed and endurance sports were her favorite. She won a silver medal for the Masters Age Group at 2012’s Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, and was the top American finisher. In 2013, Karen won 4 gold medals for the USA, breaking the Huntsman Senior Games National record in a time of 1 hour eleven minutes (1:11), a symbol of the Holy Trinity to Karen. Despite her diagnosis of stage-4 metastatic breast cancer, in November of 2018 she achieved a life-long goal of winning the national Age Group Aquathlon championships. A lover of Christ, Karen found Lord in the pits of despair, sharing a courageous story told through her book, Just Three Words, and in inspirational speeches, sermons, blogs and TV appear-

ances (including NBC’s Today show and ABC’s Good Morning America). Karen leaves behind her husband of 29 years, Peter L Newman of South Burlington; her three beloved sons Stetson, Chase and Trent; her loving parents Roberta and Dr. John Stetson of Boca Raton, FL and Charlotte, VT; her ever-blessed brothers – David Stetson and his wife Samantha of Newtown Square, PA, and Dr. Steven Stetson and his wife Lisa of Williston, VT; her brotherin-law Bruce Newman and his wife Suki, of Birmingham, AL; and many beloved nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, fellow athletes and lovers of Christ. Cremation to be performed by the Cremation Society of Chittenden County. Condolences and memories can be posted to their website www.cremationsocietycc.com, under Obituaries. Karen’s life will be celebrated on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 10 am, at The Old Lantern in Charlotte, VT. The service will be available on live-stream for those unable to attend. Additional details will be posted at www.thekarennewman.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Healing Winds: either electronically at https://www.healingwindsusa.org/ donate/ or by check to Healing Winds Vermont, 240 Battery St, Burlington, VT 05401; or The Cancer Patient Support Foundation at https://www.cpsfvt.org/donate.html Karen’s family knows its grief will soon be replaced with a deep and abiding gratitude for this amazing woman whose faith and love showed us all what it means be a good Christian. Karen is now free to soar in heaven with her Lord and savior, as is promised to all in John 3:16.

Mary and Harold Perper Residence Hall wins Most Outstanding Residential Award Lynn University’s Mary and Harold Perper Residence Hall won the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Florida’s Most Outstanding Residential Award at the GalaVerde Leadership Awards. Designed by Gensler, Perper Residence Hall features loftstyle apartments for 170 students. Architects designed the building with USGBC’s sustainability rating system in mind, and the residence hall received LEED Silver certification earlier this year—thanks to the support of The Spinnaker Group. Over 20% of project materials and over 75% of construction waste were recycled. A responsibly managed forest produced more than half of the wood used. It incorporated water and energy

efficiencies. "We are extremely honored and pleased this project was recognized by our greenbuilding peers as superlative examples of the highest quality, sustainable building undertakings," said Jonathan Burgess, President of The Spinnaker Group. "Achieving LEED certification is more than implementing sustainable practices—it’s a commitment to making the world a better place, as well as a challenge to others to do better.” The 2019 GalaVerde Awards recognized excellence in high-performance building design, environmental stewardship and community impact, as well as green building initiatives and achievements.

Tony Dungy to keynote PBSC STEAM Luncheon New York Times bestselling author and NFL Hall of Fame coach Tony Dungy will be the keynote speaker at Palm Beach State College’s Eighth Annual STEAM Luncheon. The highly anticipated STEAM Luncheon is PBSC’s signature event to increase scholarships, business partnerships and internship opportunities to support students pursuing science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics fields. This year, the College will also celebrate its achievements in enrollment, completion and other areas that have transformed the lives of students and strengthened the community. Presented by Bank of America, it is set for 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts Cohen Pavilion in West Palm Beach. “Tony Dungy is a respected and admired leader both on and off the field,” said PBSC President Ava L. Parker, J.D. “His participation in our STEAM Luncheon will help amplify our initiatives to expose our students to critical STEAM fields and support the STEAM employers in our area.” Dungy led the Indianapolis Colts to Superbowl victory in 2007 and became the first African American coach to win the NFL championship. A former NFL defensive back, he got his start as a head football coach with the Tampa Bay Buc-

caneers in 1996. During his 13 seasons with the Colts and the Buccaneers, he achieved a 148-79 overall record and became the first NFL coach to lead his teams to the playoffs for 10 consecutive years. Dungy retired from coaching in 2009, and he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016, again becoming the first African American coach to be so honored. He now serves as an analyst for NBC’s “Football Night in America” and spends time sharing his lessons on life, leadership and fatherhood, which he says is his most important job. He and his wife, Lauren, have been married for 36 years and are the parents of 10 children, seven of whom are adopted. Dungy, whose books include “Quiet Strength,” “Uncommon,” and “The Mentor Leader,” has served for 21 years as the national spokesman for All Pro Dad, the fatherhood program of the nonprofit organization Family First. “Tony Dungy has been more than a coach for players. He’s been a mentor for life, empowering young lives through the power of leadership, integrity and character,’’ said David Rutherford, vice president of Institutional Advancement and executive director of the PBSC Foundation. “All of us can take an inspirational page from his playbook.”

Diplomacy Program Earns Five Awards At Model U.N. The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program at Florida Atlantic University recently received five delegation awards at the National Model United Nations competition in Washington, D.C. A team of 75 FAU students participated in the annual competition where schools represent countries and students step into the shoes of diplomats to solve global problems. FAU was the most awarded team out of the 76 competing universities that participated. Ten of the students were from the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College and they received the Distinguished Delegation Award. The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program, which trains students in world affairs, dispute resolution and debate, was established in 1996 and is a unit of the

Peace, Justice & Human Rights Program. To date, the program has won 37 national and international awards for academic excellence. “I would like to congratulate all the students who represented FAU at nationals with distinction,” said Jeffrey Morton, Ph.D. , director of the Leon Charney Diplomacy Program and FAU political science professor. “It is a pleasure and privilege to work with such great undergraduates who have very bright futures.” In 2017, the program was named to honor the diplomatic legacy of Leon Charney, who played a key role in the 1978 Camp David Accords. Morton, along with FAU political science assistant professor Annette LaRocco, Ph.D., direct the program, which will next compete in nationals in New York City in March.

sports FAU Football Moves into First Place Alone in C-USA East and Posts Program’s 100th Win

Harrison Bryant caught 10 passes for 182 yards, and Florida Atlantic University football posted the 100th win in program history by defeating UTSA at the Alamodome on Saturday night, 40-26. Coupled with Charlotte’s 24-13 win over Marshall, the Owls have now taken over outright possession of first place in the Conference USA East Division and can clinch the division title on Senior Day next Saturday. “Obviously it didn’t feel great at the end how we played on defense, but you have to look at the overall thing,” said head coach Lane Kiffin. “We went on the road, came here on

a day where there was a lot of upsets around the conference (and totaled) 526 yards of offense against, like I said all week, a very talented team.” Bryant’s 182 receiving yards is a new career high. He previously had two games over the century mark, both coming during his junior year: 133 against Old Dominion (Oct. 6, 2018) and 138 yards against North Texas (Nov. 15, 2018). The senior also went over 2,000 yards in his career (now 2,023 and counting), and his single-game output is the most ever by a UTSA opponent as well as by any player in the Alamodome.

PBA Men’s Soccer Team Advances Lynn’s Fernandez earns Defensive in Postseason Play Player of the Year, Rootes earns Coach of the Year to Highlight AllSSC Selections

The University’s men’s soccer team was named the No. 2 seed of Super Region 2 during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday evening. This marks the Sailfish’s fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament as well as the fifth consecutive year the team has been named a host. The Sailfish (14-23) reached the finals of the Sunshine State Conference tournament after defeating Florida Southern and Florida Tech. They fell to Lynn in penalty kicks after playing to a 2-2 tie through regulation and overtime. The loss to the Fighting Knights snapped a seven game winning streak. The Sailfish established a 47-5-6 record over the last three years but will compete in a Super Region that has produced five national champions and two runners-up in the last seven seasons. As the No. 2 seed, Coach McMahon and his squad will face the winner of the first round matchup of No. 7 seed Francis Marion and No. 10 Limestone

(Friday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m.). PBA will host that match at the Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Athletic Campus Friday. PBA plays the winner 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 24. New in this year’s men’s soccer tournament are four Super Regions that feed into the national semifinals. The former South and Southeast Regions were combined into Super Region 2. The national semifinals will be played in Pittsburgh. Lynn was named the top seed of the super region after defeating the Sailfish twice during the season. The Fighting Knights will host and face the winner of No. 8 Queens (NC) and No. 9 Lee. Wingate was named the No. 3 seed and will host No. 6 Young Harris while Florida Tech was awarded the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 West Florida in the second round. Four super regional winners will head to Pittsburgh to face off in semifinals on Dec. 12 and finals on Dec. 14.

Rodrigo Fernandez was named Defensive Player of the Year and John Rootes earned Coach of the Year honors as the Lynn University's men's soccer program received a total of five All-Sunshine State Conference (SSC) selections, two on the First Team and three on the Second Team. Rootes earns Coach of the Year recognition for the third time in his career and first since 2016. The Fighting Knights secured the SSC's Regular Season Championship and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament with a 12-1-1 record, going 8-1-1 in conference play. Fernandez, a native of Mexico City, becomes the sixth Fighting Knight to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors and first since Jason Sangha in 2014. Fernandez led a defense that racked up four shutouts while holding opponents to a 0.98 goals-against average. Speedy

winger Alexandre Horveno joins his teammate on the First Team as a midfielder after leading the SSC in assists with eight. On the Second Team, Lukas Ostermann, Joao Delgado and Julian Kersting earned spots at forward, midfield and defense, respectively. Ostermann tied for the team-lead with seven goals on the season and ranked sixth in the SSC with 17 total points. Delgado, a crafty central midfielder, tallied one assist for the Fighting Knights, starting in 11 games. Kersting helped Fernandez to anchor a strong Lynn defense, starting and playing in all 14 matches, adding three assists offensively. Lynn's five selections are the most for the program since 2016 when the Blue and White were tabbed with seven all-conference honorees.
