“For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” - Romans 8:6-8

COMMUNITY Barbering Program Puts Palm Beach State College a Cut and Shave Above
A new Barbering program is about to get underway on Palm Beach State College’s Belle Glade campus, and the timing couldn’t be better. Prospective students may also visit the Barbering website for details or call 561-993-1175. “We are so excited to bring this new opportunity to the Glades,” said Dr. Gloria McAllister, program director for Postsecondary Adult Vocational certificate programs on the Belle Glade campus. “There will be many job opportunities for our Barbering graduates to work in existing businesses or to start their own shops.” In fact, local barbers concerned over the lack of new talent asked PBSC to start the program. The Belle Glade campus already had Cosmetology, Facials Specialty, and Nails Technician programs housed in a brand new salon environment. With
this fully equipped facility in place, the Barbering program took shape. “This program is great for men and women, and we have both genders enrolling in the program,” McAllister said. “More and more shops are unisex, and both groups need to have knowledge of the full range of services. By adding barbering to our existing cosmetology offering, we can prepare professionals for all clientele.” In the 20-month program, students gain expertise in hair cutting and styling, beard and mustache trimming, shaving and skin care services, and hair coloring and chemical processes (hair relaxing and permanent waving), as well as barbershop management. As a public institution, PBSC’s low tuition rate saves in-state students thousands of dollars over private schools. In addition, financial aid is available. Program graduates are eligible to apply for their Florida Barber License and sit for the required licensing exam. Upon passing the exam, graduates will become licensed barbers, qualified to perform all barbering services in Florida. “I really want to expand my career choices, said Judi Austin, who recently enrolled. “The Barbering program will give me that opportunity. I can’t wait for classes to begin.”

PBSC to Offer an Online Associate FAU Names Bret Danilowicz, Ph.D. Degree as University Provost Palm Beach State College will offer an online 62-credit hour Associate in Arts in business degree program starting this fall. This will be the College’s first fully online Associate in Arts degree program. It will begin with one to two cohorts of students who will take all the courses together, allowing them the opportunity to encourage one another and form study groups. There are still available slots. Students who are interested in enrolling may contact the College Information Center at 561-967-7222 for more information. “A fully online Associate in Arts degree program will make the College more accessible to all individuals, especially the adult population, who are in need of this type of an undergraduate degree program,” said Dr. Bernadette Russell, vice president of e-learning and instructional technology and provost of the Boca Raton campus. “It provides
quality, is highly interactive, and is easily transferable to baccalaureate programs upon completion.” The program requires students to complete 20 online courses, including two four credit hour classes, organized into six terms over the next two years. There are four courses in both the fall and spring terms and two courses each summer. The degree provides students with a solid foundation to continue at a university to study accounting, management, marketing, finance or management information systems. All courses in the program are certified through Quality Matters, a leading independent national online course quality assurance organization. All coursework and exams will be provided online. Students will also be assigned an online learning student success advisor who will guide them through the program and help them achieve completion.
Florida Atlantic University has named Bret Danilowicz, Ph.D. as its provost and vice president for academic affairs, effective July 1. Danilowicz served as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oklahoma State University since 2012. Prior to this position, he was dean of the College of Science and Technology at Georgia Southern University from 2006-12. He also has held a faculty position at University College Dublin in Ireland. “Dr. Danilowicz is a tremendous addition to FAU,” said FAU President John Kelly. “The university certainly will benefit from his proven energy and his innovative and forward-thinking nature as we continue our Race to Excellence. I look forward to working closely with Dr. Danilowicz on FAU’s executive leadership team.” As leader of FAU’s Division of Academic Affairs, Danilowicz will oversee FAU’s 10 colleges and more than 180 degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels for more than 30,000 students. Related areas, such as the Office of Undergraduate Studies, the University Registrar, the University Libraries, the Office of Information Technology, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, also come under the division’s umbrella. “Florida Atlantic has made remarkable advances in its research and teaching mission in recent years,” said Danilowicz. “I am simply delighted to be joining FAU at this time, and I look forward to facilitating the success of faculty and students across all six of the university’s sites and campuses.” Danilowicz earned a Ph.D. in zoology from Duke University; an M.B.A. from Georgia Southern University; an M.A. in education: leadership and management from The Open University in the United Kingdom;
and a B.S. in biology with a minor in computer science from Utica College of Syracuse University. Danilowicz replaces Gary Perry, Ph.D. who served for nearly four years as university provost and vice president for academic affairs at FAU. Under his leadership, FAU improved its standing in the state performance funding model, in which the university rocketed to the top of the rankings and sustained its success. Perry also brought to fruition the vision for a STEM campus in Jupiter, which is now a thriving life sciences research hub that boasts a combined total of $75 million in federal funding with partners Scripps Florida and the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience. Prior to assuming the role of provost, Perry served for seven years as dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and, before that, interim dean of graduate studies for the university. Perry joined FAU in 1989 as an associate professor of neuroscience and has held several other leadership positions at FAU, including the roles of senior associate dean for research and graduate studies and acting associate dean and chair of the biomedical science program in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. Perry played an integral role in transitioning FAU’s biomedical sciences program to an independent medical school that has achieved full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. “Dr. Gary Perry has dedicated his professional life to Florida Atlantic University, and I am tremendously grateful for the role he has played to help transform FAU into the nation’s fastest improving university,” Kelly said. “Without his hard work and dedication, the university would not have made such remarkable progress in such a short space of time.”

Local Library Rocking to Promote Summer Reading The summer is here and while some of our kids are in camps or away with relatives there are those who are at home or in the streets during the days. It is well known that a lack of reading during the summer can cause a student to lose many educational achievements made - over the previous school year when he or she returns to school in the fall. Simply put, if reading and learning are not continued, students can lose up to two months of skills during the summer. That is known as summer slide. While parents and educators are focusing on getting kids to read during the summer months, librarians know the key to getting books into their hands is to first get them into the library. So, the hard-working staff at the Boca Raton Public Library, through their summer reading program, are using creative measures to do so. Using this year’s national theme, “Libraries Rock,” they are trying to bring
music and reading together. Earlier this month, library officials kicked off their summer reading initiative with a party. The family-oriented event featured games and food. There was also a live DJ and an interactive drumming activity. They are encouraging residents of all ages to “rock out and read,” as well as participate in the more than 100 programs and classes for all ages at the library. Mayor Scott Singer issued a proclamation declaring June 4 through Aug. 10 this year as Summer Reading time. The proclamation recognized that public libraries play a critical role in providing a bridge for education and academic skills for students over the summer months to prevent “summer slide.” When Arne Duncan was secretary of education about 10 years ago, he called summer learning loss
“devastating.” Studies show that the average student lose up to one month of instruction over the school summer breaks. Just imagine the impact this will have on disadvantaged students, who are not likely to pick up a book during those eight or nine weeks. I learned recently that if students read just six books this summer, they can maintain their current reading level, and, if they read between 10 and 20 books of their own choosing, they can increase reading achievement. When kids enroll in the summer reading program, they will receive a free reading log, bag and bookmark. They also can collect a new prize each week for reading. ’Tweens and teens receive a cell phone wallet upon enrollment and are placed in weekly drawings for gift cards when they log their books online. Adults are not left out. They get a free book bag when they enroll and are eligible for monthly drawings for local concert tickets when they log the books they read at bocalibrary.org.
The staff also are donning themed summer reading shirts throughout the summer. I think their approach is the best antidote for the ‘summer slide’. Thanks to The Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library, The Junior League of Boca Raton and the law firm of Boyd, Richards, Parker and Colonnelli who have shown their support for this year’s Summer Reading initiative at the library through their generous donation. Some other local libraries are taking creative initiatives to ensure every child has a book in hand this summer as well. Our friends in Delray Beach are feeding kids lunch while they are there. They also are making sure those kids have library cards. C. Ron Allen can be reached at crallen@delraybeachtribune.com or 561665-0151.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Keep Your Dreams Alive! I went out for breakfast on December 30, 2015, at a favorite Deli near my home. As I sat at a table for two, I immediately noticed the one next to mine, occupied by five elderly ladies who enthusiastically talked more than they ate! I kept overhearing them with interest, while feasting at their joyous interactions. They were displaying a zest for life which was truly contagious! While I enjoyed my food, I kept noticing the consistency of their joyous participation in those friendly exchanges. On more than one occasion I felt like turning to them and showing my appreciation for their laughter and pleasant disposition toward one another. I nearly moved towards them to say something complimentary, yet lacked courage by July 20 - July 26, 2018
fearing being intrusive! When the time came for me to pay my bill, and leave, they were still carrying on their animated conversation. As I stood up to leave, my resolve was renewed to share some encouraging compliments to them. I stopped by their table and simply commented: “Ladies, I really enjoyed seeing the way you are ending the year; I just hope that you take into the new, the same joy and enthusiasm you are displaying here!” They all smiled and several said something appreciative to me, also wishing me a happy new year. As I further thought about that simple incident, I fully reaffirmed in my mind something that I have for long believed, namely, that the pleasant experiences
of any moment should never be limited only to when they occur; they can be brought forward into the next day, the following month, into a new year as well! That was the nature of my warm wishes to those ladies whom I didn’t know. Any pleasant dreams that may be unfulfilled in the course of a given year should not be allowed to die altogether; they can be re-edited, and re-considered for later realization. Possible experiences that might have been close to occur, though they did not, can still be kept alive in one’s mind and be attempted again. Don’t give up so quickly; avoid being discouraged too soon. Good things often come in small installments rather
www.bocaratontribune.com
than all at once. It’s our task to remain on top of every situation, doing what we can and whatever we must, to see that what is truly feasible and advantageous to us is not so easily dismissed or discarded too fast! A life of genuine fulfillment and joy always keeps dreams alive, while also dreaming new dreams; it equally knows how to stretch positive experiences beyond the moment when they first occur. No bad condition in the world or in the nation should ever rob anybody from carrying noble goals into realization, in spite of all the barriers that have to be faced and overcome along the way!

Equipped For Good Work When people learn I am a writer, they often say, “Oh, I could never do that. Writing is so difficult for me to do.” This makes me chuckle, because I feel the same way about practically any other line of work. I admire people with mechanical skills, such as carpenters, plumbers, electricians or all-purpose handymen (or women). I cannot imagine how CPAs and bookkeepers do the work they do. Individuals who excel at public speaking amaze me, and gifted leaders who can inspire and mobilize those that report to them have my great respect. We are all different, drawing from a unique “toolbox” of gifts, skills and experiences. That is one reason we need each other – working together, we complement one another’s abilities. Have you ever considered, however, where our innate talents, skills and preferences come from? I began writing early in my life. Although I did not regard it as a career possibility until about two years into college, it has always been an enjoyable part of my life, something about which I grew more and more passionate. The interesting thing is, I never decided one day, “I think I am going to pursue writing, rather than becoming a mechanic, or a doctor, lawyer or scientist.” It was like writing was “hard-wired” into my being, an integral part of who I was – and am today. My conclusion about where we get our innate abilities is simple: God bestows them to us as He sees fit. Some people are natural salespeople; others have special management strengths, while others are uniquely equipped to become engineers, teachers, nurses or architects. Psalm 139:14 says of God, “For you created my inmost being…. I am fearfully
and wonderfully made, your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” I believe that includes the talents and specific gifts that sometimes manifest themselves in early childhood, like a musical prodigy or a mathematical genius who can solve complex equations long before many young peers even know how to read. But this special equipping of the Lord does not stop at the womb. It continues throughout our lives when we are sensitive to His leading and obedient to His call. Consider: Using our gifts fulfills God’s will. How we use our unique talents and abilities is not just for our benefit, but also fulfill God’s will for our lives – as well as His perfect, eternal intentions. “Now may the God of peace…equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him”(Hebrews 13:20-21). Our skills are part of God’s plan. Our distinctive vocational capabilities were bestowed within the context of God’s greater purpose, enabling us to serve Him and others most effectively. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”(Ephesians 2:10). Our skills should be used according to God’s Word. The work we do, and the abilities we employ, are best utilized within the context of the truths and principles God provides in the Bible. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Guthrie Named New PBSC Student Trustee In the short time that Shanice Guthrie has been attending Palm Beach State College, she has come to notice the strong unity among its diverse study population. However, she has also noticed that many students feel detached from the school. This is something she hopes to change as the newly appointed PBSC student trustee for the 2018-19 academic year. “Students are mostly unaware of the vast array of services and benefits that is provided at their disposal,” said Guthrie, who is a student in the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College at Palm Beach State. “Others have proposals for the betterment of the school but were unaware of the appropriate channels to voice their suggestions.” She will attend her first District Board of Trustees meeting Aug. 14, serving as the voice for the College’s nearly 49,000 students. She is the 18th student to serve in the position. A native of Jamaica, Guthrie graduated from Royal Palm Beach High School in 2017 and lives in West Palm Beach. She was chosen by a committee after an application and interview process open to all PBSC students with at least a 3.0 grade point average and at least 24 credit hours completed. She was among 10 students who interviewed for the role. When she learned she was chosen, she cried. “I wanted this role so bad because I have a drive and a passion to motivate others, and I believe this is the
perfect opportunity for me to do that.” Guthrie, who is currently pursuing her Associate in Arts degree with a focus on philosophy and psychobiology, has a 4.0 GPA and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the Student Government Association on the Lake Worth campus. She plans to do a series of videos that will be posted on PBSC’s social media channels and others to introduce herself to the student body and to give her the opportunity to express her ideas and encourage students. One idea she hopes to implement is to have PBSC student clubs travel to local area high schools to educate students on what’s available at the College as a complement to the Palm Beach State’s already established recruitment efforts. “I hope students can come to PBSC already knowing what the College could offer them and not finding out sometime afterward,” Guthrie said. “I also hope that more students make PBSC their first choice after high school because they see that there is so much more available to them here.” After PBSC, Guthrie hopes to attend John Hopkins University and become a cardio thoracic surgeon. More importantly, however, she hopes she can always be an inspiration to people who don’t believe that they can accomplish their goals. The student trustee role is a non-voting role that was created by the District Board of Trustees in 2001.

Boca Raton FC Earns One Sunshine Cooper Selected to NABC Honors Court Conference Best XI Award Lynn University’s men’s basketball team picked up a postseason academic accolade on Tuesday as Daniel Cooper was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2017-18 Honors Court. It is Cooper’s first career academic award. In order to be named to the NABC Honors Court, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior academically from an NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year. They also must have matriculated at
Earlier today, the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) released the Conference Best XI selections for its 13 conferences. Captain, and veteran midfielder, Carlos Meneses got the nod for Boca Raton FC in the Sunshine Conference Best XI. Meneses was one of two players selected not from Miami FC, Jacksonville Armada, or Miami United FC. Teams, media, fans, and supporters were all part of the online voting process. With stints in first division clubs in Venezuela such as Deportivo Tachira, Zamora FC, Vigia FC, Union Átlético Maracaibo, and Atlético Bucaramanga, the Boca Raton playmaker is the most experienced player on the team, and was featured in eights matches for Boca Raton FC in 2018, logging 637 minutes, scoring two goals and recording two assists. In two NPSL seasons with Boca Raton, Meneses has logged 1,134 minutes, the most most NPSL minutes in club history.
“I’m very thankful to the fans, the team, and the media for selecting me to the Sunshine Conference Best XI,” said Meneses. “All season our club played hard to make our city proud and we became brothers on and off the field. This award might be individual, but without head coach Jim Rooney and the rest of our team I would not have been given this honor.” “We are very proud of Carlos and all his hard work he’s put into the 2018 season,” added Boca Raton FC president, Douglas Heizer. “Carlos is the staple of Boca Raton FC pride and seeing the rest of the league give him credit for it is very special.” Despite finishing the NPSL season, Boca Raton FC has now shifted its focus to the American Premier Soccer League, where the club will look to win its third APSL Championship in four years.

least one year at their current institution. Through two years as a Fighting Knight, Cooper holds a 3.57 cumulative GPA as a communications major. After missing the 2016-17 campaign due to injury, Cooper bounced back this season as a redshirt junior, providing valuable defensive minutes off the bench (12.4 MPG) while appearing in 26 of 27 games. Cooper is one of 12 studentathletes from the Sunshine State Conference to claim the honor as Palm Beach Atlantic (3), Embry-Riddle (3), Eckerd (2), Florida Southern (2) and Florida Tech (1) all boasted selections.
Singletary and Al-Shaair Top C-USA’s Football Honorees
Florida Atlantic University football players Devin Singletary and Azeez Al-Shaair were named Conference USA's Offensive and Defensive Preseason Players of the Year, respectively, on Monday. The announcement, which included honors for a total of six Owls, marked the first time FAU represented both the offensive and defensive preseason top spot since joining C-USA in 2013. Singletary, who also garnered a preseason spot on the offensive list at running back, ended his sophomore campaign as the league's MVP. The 2017 AP All-American is joined on the offensive team by fifth-year senior offensive lineman Reggie Bain. Bain, a 2014 Freshman All-American selection and three time postseason C-USA honoree, is set to lead a line that will see three new starters after being a part of a 2017 line that started the same five each of the team's 14 games including the C-USA Championship game and the Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl Championship. up the FAU offensive players selected to the preseason team. Al-Shaair, a three-year C-USA postseason honoree and a 2015 Freshman All-American selection, led the conference in total tackles and was No. 5 nationally last year. He is joined by senior cornerback Shelton Lewis and senior safety Jalen Young, both 2017 First Team C-USA postseason selections. Lewis recorded a team-high eight pass breakups and four interceptions while Young, a three-year C-USA postseason honoree, finished No. 2 nationally in interceptions a year ago. Singletary and Al-Shaair will be joined by Football Head Coach Lane Kiffin at the 2018 Conference USA Media Days, which will be held in Frisco, Texas on Wednesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 19. The Owls will report to campus for preseason drills Thursday, Aug. 2. FAU will open the 2018 season at Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 1 at noon. The game will be carried on Fox.

FAU Women’s Soccer Adds Terrapin Transfer Krstec Florida Atlantic University women's soccer and Head Coach Patrick Baker are pleased to announce the ninth newcomer for the upcoming 2018 season, with in-state product Maddison "Gi" Krstec transferring to the program from the University of Maryland. Krstec hails from North Port, Florida. She finished her high school soccer career at Lakewood Ranch High School, played club soccer most recently for Tampa Bay United U17, and spent her freshman year of college with Maryland. She will have three seasons of eligibility remaining with the Owls, and is able to play immediately this fall. As a high schooler, Krstec earned three varsity soccer MVP honors, was the 2013-14 Sun Coast Player of the year, and 2017 Herald-Tribune Preps Soccer Player of the Year. From 2010 to 2015, she was a member of Florida's Olympic Development Program, and was part of an ODP National Training Camp as well, in 2014. Additionally, she also excelled in both cross country (All-Area, varsity MVP and 201314 Sun Coast Runner of the Year) and track and field (holding multiple school records among other honors). This past year with the Terrapins, she appeared in 14 of the team's 18 matches, starting five, and totaled 624 minutes on the pitch. She scored her first collegiate goal from about 35 yards out as part of a 2-2
draw with No. 12 Wisconsin, and all told, eight of her 13 shots on the season were on goal for a success rate of 62 percent. "I'm thrilled for the opportunity Coach Baker has given me, to come back to Florida and play in my home state. I plan to major in psychology and academically, FAU is a great fit for me. I am already familiar with some of the players on the team and am eager to create new and lasting friendships with the rest of the team. I'm looking forward to our winning season." Coach Baker on Krstec: "We are excited to announce that Maddison Krstec is continuing her academic and athletic careers at Florida Atlantic University. She is a tremendous talent and we are fortunate to have her joining our roster. Maddison is a fierce competitor and can play multiple positions on the field. A number of her playing attributes will fit into our system very well. She will mostly likely play in the midfield for us, and we look forward to her arrival in August." Krstec becomes the team's third transfer of 2018, after a six-member freshmen class proceeded them on Signing Day. Those nine, at this point, will combine with 21 returnees ahead of the season opener, in just less than a month (Aug. 17 versus Miami).
