“Listen to the advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted amoung the wise.” - Proverbs 19:20

Boca Beat Gumbo Limbo Nature Preserve Center is inviting the public to join forces in attacking marine debris that has washed up on The City Of Boca Raton, Florida’s beach and along the Intracoastal.

JFS at Home was officially launched earlier this week at a ribbon cutting ceremony where Councilman Robert Weinroth was in attendance alongside Commissioner Mary Lou Berger. Danielle Newman Hartman explained the newly licensed not-for-profit agency is closely affiliated with Norman & Ruth Rales Jfs and is a proud member of the Greater Boca Chamber. The mission of JFS at Home is to meet the needs of an ever growing community of seniors living in Boca Raton. The county is about to experience a “senior tsunami,” according to Hartman. The Boca Raton municipal election that will be held on March 7th 2017 already has a list of candidates. Earlier this year Mayor Susan Haynie filed to run for re-election. Council Member Scott Singer was reportedly considering a run for Mayor. However, early last week he filed to run for re-election to Seat A. On September 9, Boca Raton attorney, Andy Thomson, stopped by City Hall to file his preliminary paperwork to run for Seat B. He joins Andrea Levine O’Rourke and Emily Gentile, each of whom filed to run for Seat B. Andre O’Rourke will have her campaign kickoff party at The Wick Theatre on September 30th at 5:30pm Gumbo Limbo Nature Preserve Center is inviting the public to join forces in attacking marine debris that has washed up on The City Of Boca Raton, Florida’s beach and along the Intracoastal. The center will host International Coastal Cleanup this Saturday (September 24th 2016) at Spanish River Park (3001 N Ocean Blvd Boca Raton FL 33432) from 8AM 11AM and is open to all ages.  Florida Atlantic University’s Hospitality & Tourism Management program is among the top 30 in the United States, according to the latest rankings published by The Best Schools Magazine. The wait to experience Boca Raton’s new science playground is almost over, park officials say. Visitors to Sugar Sand Park at 300 S. Military Trail will have access to the playground Nov. 19 after about eight months of construction and an anticipated $1.8 million in project fees.  Palm Beach County school district advisory committee will review two possible boundary changes for Calusa Elementary in northern Boca Raton. Calusa has 1,197 students this year, 357 more than it was built to handle, and is expected to grow in the next few years. The move would force boundary changes for two other Boca Raton elementary schools, J.C. Mitchell and Whispering Pines, which are already near capacity. The “season” has officially begun as Kelly Smallridge, president of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, welcomed a sellout crowd to the annual gala at the Breakers. It was an evening of renewal as friends got to visit and enjoy the BDB’s great event. Underlying the festivities was Kelly’s report on the continuing success of the BDB in attracting companies and jobs to Palm Beach County (exceeding the goals for last year). Welcome the newest member of the Boca Raton Police Services Department family, Officer Phillip Torsiello! Congratulations to Renata Rosa, Tony Beltran and Valeria Rodriguez on the grand re-opening of their Art of Dance studio. Located, now, at 151 SE 1st Ave in Downtown Boca Raton, the new location is bright a full of fun as Renata and company help their clients feel happy, energized and accomplished.

Community Members of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem to Volunteer at Boca Helping Hands On Saturday, September 24th, the late Henrietta, the Countess de Hoernle would have turned 104 years old. Her passing in July was mourned by the entire community…but especially by the many charities she supported over the years. One of the Countess’ favorite organizations was the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Under the guidance of Commander Isabelle Paul, the Florida Commandery has hosted the annual Birthday Gala and Concert for the Countess since 2012. To keep her legacy alive, members of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem will spend Saturday volunteering at Boca Helping Hands, another charity dear to the heart of the Countess. Members as well known and widely respected as Isabelle Paul, Dr. Richard and Samantha Cartledge (world renown heart surgeon and head of the Christine Lynn Cardiac Center at Boca Raton Regional Hospital), Karen Krumholtz (Schmidt Family Foundation), Brian Edwards (Gulf Stream Goodwill), Mary and Frank Csar (Boca Raton Historical Museum), and James and Helen Ballerano (Chapin, Ballerano & Cheslak) among others, will roll up their sleeves and spend Saturday packing pantry food bags, cooking and serving

meals, and serving the nearly 250 people who come to Boca Helping Hands every day for food, assistance and job training programs. BHH Executive Director, James S. Gavrilos, himself a Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem commented: “The Countess de Hoernle lived her life in service to others. Her real legacy is not in the countless buildings that bear her name. Her real legacy is in the lives of the people she touched.” Florida Commander, Dame Isabelle Paul added: “The Order of St. John wants to keep her memory alive. With our mission to serve the sick and the poor, we can think of no more appropriate way to remember the live of his amazing women than by serving those she loved and supported. When the Knights and Dames of the Order of St. John are hard at work this Saturday at Boca Helping Hands, we believe that the memory and the spirit of our beloved Countess will be with us.” For more information on the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, or on Boca Helping Hands, contact, James S. Filling a Huge Need in the Community By CRA News Service While most people were lounging around their homes on Saturday morning, about 600 others braved the sweltering heat and waited in line to load up on free groceries at Village Academy in Delray Beach. The Delray Beach Police Department, KOP Mentoring Network and the Wayne Barton Study Center teamed up to distribute the food to those in need at the event dubbed Food4Friends. “The need in our community is so huge as we can see here today, and this is just our antidote to address that need,” said C. Ron Allen, CEO of KOPMN, a community-service nonprofit he founded 25 years ago. “I am so grateful for our partners and volunteers who are giving of themselves to help those less fortunate.” Saturday’s giveaway drew not only Delray Beach residents but families from as far as Greenacres to the west and Riviera Beach to the north, and as early as 8 a.m.— two hours before the event was scheduled to start. The event actually began around 10:30 a.m. and ran until 1:30 p.m. At around 30 minutes before the scheduled start time, residents trickled in but after police officers and members of the Police Explorer Post 319 knocked on doors in the neighborhood and passed out flyers the numbers soared. “I’m so glad they knocked on my door,” said Annette Barnes, who lives in the nearby Auburn Trace. “This is a blessing. I don’t need to go grocery shopping for another two weeks.” More than 100 volunteers — including 35 students from the Criminal Justice Academy at Atlantic High School and the Police Explorers — distributed 150,000 pounds of canned goods, fresh produce, freshly laid eggs, chicken, bread and other items. The food was donated by the Wayne Barton Study Center, which

distributes food each weekend through his Good News of Christ Ministries in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Saturday’s volunteers worked with the precision of fast-food workers taking orders at a drive-through. They placed the food on tables near two trucks as the residents were able to “shop”, choosing items that they needed. “I have a family so I know the cost of groceries is sky high and it’s tough for everybody -especially for those who aren’t as privileged - to be able to work to make their lives better,” said Officer Kenny Brotz, one of the officers who filled almost every role on Saturday. “So, it is good to be able to help out and give a hand.” Several recipients signed up to volunteer for two or four hours with Village Academy, the Delray Beach Public Library and KOP Mentoring Network. Cheryl McLean arrived about two hours before the giveaway started. She was thrilled with her bottle of peanut butter, bag of flour, box of canned corns and peas, half gallon of milk, loaf of bread. “I am so thankful for whoever made this possible,” said McLean, 68, who is disabled and on a fixed income. “May the good Lord continue to bless them. I will be praying for them.”

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Human Kindness Has No Frontiers! Many important tasks in the world cannot be carried on without the appropriate credentials of those expected to fulfill them. Just as it happens with international travel, proper documentation is required of those who cross different frontiers! Fortunately, doing good anywhere in the world can be achieved without a license. It just demands an honest disposition, accompanying one’s ability to fulfill the necessary functions. I refer to simple gestures, to positive attitudes, to easily achievable ends that make an indelible difference in the lives of others who are, thereby, significantly touched.

I am referring to what doesn’t expect, nor demand, unique credentials other than a sincere heart, overflowing with good will toward other members of the human race and also to institutions that have been established to alleviate human need, and give hope to countless individuals! Anywhere in the world, many people long for a word of cheer from another, a sincere smile sent in their direction, a possible gesture of affirmation and gratitude for what several individuals often show no interest in providing. Yet, it is small demonstrations of interest expressed toward others that

often “make their day,” or inspire them in also acting likewise. A long chain of good will can be thus created and, if properly managed and sustained, it never ceases from potently affecting the self-esteem of both giver and receiver! Any good gesture toward another is fulfilled not for what one may gain in return. Some recipients of such generous good cheer may even be initially indifferent to it. However, the one spreading good cheer continues the activity, not on account of expecting anything in return, but because it is good for the environment, and it is the proper deed anywhere, anytime, toward anyone!

We must live daily with the recognition that it is a privilege to act nicely toward others, it is salutary to self and to fellow humans to spread good will wherever one is, and whereto one goes. If any good is to occur in the world, we are to be the source; the initiative must start in our own heart, as we create the climate and a way that can generate a positive environment for the well-being of an entire community! After all, acts of good will are not confined to any borders; human kindness knows no frontiers!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Cox Media Group Miami Earns Community Award For Work With Wayne Barton Boosters By: Alyssa Lamp

Cox Media Group Miami recently won the service to community radio award. The award is given for amazing community outreach capabilities and Cox Media does exactly that by hosting many food drives in the community. Cox Media Group is an integrated broadcasting, publishing, direct marketing and digital media company that includes the national advertising rep firms of CoxReps. The Miami-Fort Lauderdale DMA includes Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and is commonly referred to as "South Florida." For years, Cox Media Group Miami has held an annual turkey drive to help local families put turkey on the table each November. Cox Miami not only helps on holidays, but by continuing partnership with the Wayne barton foundation and the Broward County Sheriff's office for a food drive campaign every week of the year. James Thomas, On-Air Talent with Cox Media Miami, says “It makes

you feel good when you can go to a community and see people line up with baskets or bags so that they can get the food that they may need to only feed their family for a week or maybe even sometimes just for a day.” Using their stations as a number one communicator, Cox Miami airs public service announcements about the drives and also use their air time to enlist volunteers each and every week. “We hold about 36 [food drives] the whole year, we probably do way more than 3 million pounds of food. Each week we give over 100 pounds of food,” infroms Lindsey Maestro Powell, Community Relations Manager for Cox Media Miami. Rob Babin, VP and Market Manager for Cox Miami accepted the award by praising the leadership of Rodney Baltimore with Hot 105 and Maestro Powell. “This is the reason why we are here today. These two gentlemen dedicate their careers and their lives to utilizing our broadcast properties to serve our community.”

squeeze fresh lime or lemon juice to my water; it improves hydration and assists liver cleansing. 4) Add fiber to your diet – espe1.855.450.6224 cially before meals. This has been shown to decrease post-meal blood sugar, decrease www.mccigroup.com cholesterol levels, curb appetite and assist in weight loss. Some of my recommended fiber are psyllium husk, apple or grapefruit pectin, “freshly” ground flaxseeds, hemp fiber or my new favorite, yacon root powder or extract. 5) Spice up your life – by eating anti-diabetic spices such as cinnamon, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and fenugreek. 6) Add “superfoods” to your diet – these foods are considered the most nutritionally unique foods on the planet. My favorite superfood for diabetics is chocolate. More specifically, I mean 100% raw organic cacao beans, nibs, or powder. Raw cacao is the highest anti-oxidant food in the world and is very beneficial in preventing many of the complications of diabetes. Other anti-diabetic superfoods I recommend are maca, acai, bee pollen, royal jelly, noni, cat’s claw, camu camu berry, kelp, spirulina, goji berries ,aloe vera, jungle peanuts, blue-green algae and many, many more. Try adding a new superfood to your diet every week and you will see dramatic improvement in your overall health. 7) Take digestive enzymes – in supplement form with each meal, especially if it is cooked. Most diabetic people lack the ability to produce enough enzymes to properly digest food. Cooking destroys the natural enzymes in the food. 8) Take a multivitamin mineral complex – most diabetics are very deficient in many vitamins and minerals. Make sure you take a high quality 100% natural whole food derived formula that contains no fillers. Read the label carefully. 9) Exercise – Try to move every part of your body and sweat while doing it. It is important that you maintain lean muscle by doing some weight lifting or resistance training. You can simply start with walking, yoga, swimming, biking or you could try my favorite which is rebounding (jumping on a small trampoline). Just 5 to 10 minutes in the morning can have amazing physical as well as anti-diabetic benefits. 10) Know your number – Take responsibility of your health and demand to know and understand your specific lab results, such as HemoglobinA1C (measures chronic blood sugar control), cholesterol with complete breakdown of the subtypes, Lp(a), triglycerides, homocysteine, fibrinogen, CRP(hs), vitamin D, blood pressure, waist circumference, urinalysis with screen for micro albumin. Diabetes Mellitus (Type II) is one of the most serious health problems facing the Latinos/Hispanics in the United States. It is estimated that a Latino born today has a 50% chance of developing diabetes in his/her lifetime. Currently, it is estimated that 10% of Latinos have diabetes and 1/3 of those do not even know they have it. Having diabetes increases your risk of cardiovascular disease (ex. heart attacks, high blood pressure, stroke), amputation, blindness, kidney failure, impotence, nerve damage, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. It is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States and it has increased 700% in the past 50 years. The good news is that not only is diabetes (Type II) completely preventable, but it is possibly curable for most people willing to put the time and effort in making the necessary changes in their eating and lifestyle habits. Below are 10 important tips that can help you prevent diabetes or assist someone that already has the disease. 1) Avoid simple sugars – such as bread, white rice, potatoes, chips, sodas (even diet soda), fruit juice and highfructose corn syrup. Instead, eat more anti-diabetic complex carbohydrates such as those found in fresh leafy green vegetables, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, raw beets and carrots. The best fruits for diabetics are all the colorful berries, cherries, pomegranates, grapefruit, lemons, limes. A great substitute for white rice is the super grain from South America called Quinoa. If you want to sweeten a drink or food, use natural sweeteners such as stevia, yacon root syrup, cinnamon or cardamom. Avoid artificial sweeteners such as sucralose and aspartame as they can disrupt normal metabolism and can actually increase appetite. 2) Eat healthy “fat” – such as those found in avocados, coconuts, nuts such as almonds, Brazil nuts, walnuts, macadamias and seeds such as sunflower, pumpkin, sesame. Eat healthy fish such as sardines and wild salmon which are full of omega 3 , an essential oil which is very deficient in the diabetic and general population. Consider supplementing daily with at least 1000 gm of a good quality fish oil or even better, take krill oil which has 50X more antioxidant power. Avoid cooked fats such as cooked meats, pasteurized milk, cheese or fruit yogurt. Avoid processed or fried oils such as corn, canola, safflower oils and the very harmful partially hydrogenated or trans fats. If you love seafood, try “spicy” Peruvian ceviche. It is “cooked” with lemon juice using no heat, and it is absolutely delicious and healthy. 3) Drink more water – most people with diabetes are chronically dehydrated. Make it a habit to drink 1 to 2 glasses of water immediately upon awakening and ½ to 1 gallon throughout the day. Spring water is best, but if not available, use clean filtered water. I like to add a pinch of Celtic sea salt which contains 84 different minerals essential for optimal health . I also

“Magnificent Seven” a Traditional Western For a New Generation

The first, last and only time I saw “The Magnificent Seven” I was 12-years-old. Therefore I am ill-prepared to compare the beloved 1960 Western by John Sturges to the 2016 remake by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day,” “Olympus Has Fallen”). The new version is a Western on steroids. It begins literally with a bang, with stuff blowing up all over a frontier town called Rose Creek in the year 1879. The explosions were ordered by a greedy gold mine owner named Bartholomew Bogue, played by a dead-eyed Peter Sarsgaard. Bogue and his goons storm into a church service. Bogue delivers a threatening service equating free-will Capitalism with the love of God. Bogue wants to buy the entire town of Rose Creek so he can strip mine it for gold. He offers residents an insulting $20 each to get out of town. “You are standing in the way of God,” Bogue thunders. Outside the church he randomly shoots dead a man who dares to protest, rendering his feisty wife, Emma Cullen (Haley Bennett) a widow. So it is thoroughly established Bogue is a true villain who deserves to be brought down. But who will have the courage to do it? Enter Sam Chisholm (Denzel Washington), a bounty hunter (he insists he is a licensed Federal Marshall). Chisholm is dressed in black, riding a black horse. He swaggers into the local saloon. The music stops and everyone turns to stare. Chisholm intimidates the bartender and it doesn’t go well. Soon there is a blaze of gunfire and it is established Chisholm is one bad hombre and a quick, deadly shot. There are many familiar Western

conventions given the nod. Chisholm is the lone fearless stranger. Washington plays the character with quiet, steely resolve, quite admirably filling the boots formerly worn by Yul Brynner. When the widow Cullen offers Chisholm a bag of money that is all the town has to offer to fight back at Bogue, Chisholm replies, “I am not for sale.” Emma Cullen is very persuasive however, and it doesn’t hurt she sure is purdy. So Chisholm reluctantly agrees to form a posse and fight back. He has three weeks to prepare for the big showdown. The big change from the 1960 movie is the racial diversity of Chisholm’s gunslingers. Washington is African American. His right-hand man is hard-drinking card sharp Josh Faraday (Chris Pratt). Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke) is a Cajun former Confederate soldier. Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio) is a bible-quoting bear of a man who carries a scalping hatchet. Billy Rocks (Byonghun Lee) is a diminutive Asian man with a deadly assortment of darts, swords and knives. Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier) is a Comanche Indian played by a real Native American. When he runs out of arrows, he is a deadly shot. Like so many Westerns before it, everything leads up to a big showdown. With spectacular stunts and CGI-augmented mayhem, the big payoff is noisier and more violent than ever. I have been a fan of Westerns since I was a kid; therefore I am gratified to see a new generation take a whack at the genre. I fear most people don’t feel the way I do, but the box office will tell. In the end Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 “Seven Samurai” still rules. Three stars

By Barry Epstein  Palm Beach County homeowners will see higher property tax bills under a $4.3 billion budget given final approval Monday night. On top of that, they might also soon be paying more in sales tax if a referendum passes in the Nov. 8 election. Most of the additional property tax dollars will go to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, along with filling county positions cut during the economic downturn, replenishing reserves and funding road repairs.  Beginning next month, Boca Raton homeowners will see a $20 hike in their fire services fee. The City Council unanimously decided to raise the fee for homeowners from $85 to $105. The new fee will take effect Oct. 1.  Though Boca Raton's next municipal election isn't until March, the race already has attracted five hopefuls. So far, two incumbents, Mayor Susan Haynie and Councilman Scott Singer, want to reprise their roles as Boca leaders. And three newcomers, Andy Thomson, Andrea O'Rourke and Emily Gentile.  Latest poll shows Florida is firmly a toss-up state with Clinton-Trump in virtual tie. The latest: A New York Times Upshot/Siena College Research Institute poll of likely Florida voters shows Clinton with 41 percent and Trump with 40 percent. The results, released Monday, mean the race is effectively tied between the Democratic and Republican candidates. Libertarian Gary Johnson has 9 percent and Green Party candidate Jill Stein has 2 percent.  Spanish River High School's Silver Sound marching band didn't find out until the day of that Boca Raton nonprofits always line up to ask for city awards at one meeting a year before the new budget is passed. The band was one of 44 nonprofits at the Sept. 12 special meeting in City Hall. The proposed budget

FAU Hospitality Management Program Ranked Among Top 30 in U.S.

calls for $411,700 for all nonprofits, and Silver Sound was not alone. Most upped the money they got last year when the budget was $410,700 and requests totaled $805,900. The nonprofits will find out what they got at the 6 p.m. Sept. 26 final budget public hearing  Students from two Palm Beach County elementary schools are guaranteed healthy weekend meals through a new program that sends bags of food home with them each Friday.  Hundreds of Boca Raton area students may have to move to new schools next year, as a boundary change at one elementary school could create a domino effect. A Palm Beach County school district advisory committee will review two possible boundary changes for Calusa Elementary in northern Boca Raton. Calusa has 1,197 students this year, 357 more than it was built to handle, and is expected to grow in the next few years. The move would force boundary changes for two other Boca Raton elementary schools, J.C. Mitchell and Whispering Pines, which are already near capacity.

Florida Atlantic University’s Hospitality & Tourism Management program is among the top 30 in the United States, according to the latest rankings published by The Best Schools Magazine. Located in the College of Business, the program offers an AACSBaccreditedBachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in hospitality and tourism management, as well as a Master of Business Administration in hospitality and tourism management. Peter Ricci, Ed.D., director of the program, attributed the program’s success to its unique location, its excellent faculty and its well-established relationships with employers. “We are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by every segment of the industry, from cruise lines to casinos and private country clubs to world-class resorts,” he said. “We have a faculty with a distinct blend of industry experience and excellent graduate pedigrees, combined with an employer base that has warmly welcomed the alumni and consistently recruited our students.”

Within 50 miles of FAU’s Boca Raton campus, Ricci said there are more than 100 hotels and resorts, five casinos, 90 private country clubs, hundreds of restaurants, car rental agencies, several cruise line headquarters and Online Travel Agency (OTA) regional offices. Of the 30 programs listed in the magazine’s rankings, FAU’s program is the youngest. FAU’s program prepares students for management positions in multiple segments of the world’s largest service industry. Potential career areas include operations management, sales and marketing, public relations, revenue management, food and beverage, engineering, housekeeping, human resource management, tourism planning and development, hospitality consulting, hospitality law and many others. Students who choose to major or minor in hospitality management receive a broad management-based education following the core business curriculum. “Employers throughout the area tell us our program’s rigor and focus on a blend of business knowledge with hospitality and tourism skills is what separates it from the rest,” Ricci said.

Two 8 Year-Olds Announce their Candidacy During the YMCA’s National Campaign

By: Michelle Kaplan Two pint-sized politicians with big political ambitions launched their 2040 mayoral campaigns a little early with some help from Mayors Susan Haynie of Boca Raton, Boynton Beach Mayor, Steven B. Grant and former Mayor of Delray Beach Jeff Perlman at the YMCA Kid for Mayor Press Event at the DevosBlum Family YMCA of Boynton Beach, Sept. 13. The event is part of the Y’s first-ever national campaign, Zoe for President, designed to shine a light how the Y’s various programs, from early education to youth development and career readiness can prepare a kid for anything, even the presidency. “It’s about recognizing the potential of every child,” said Jason Hagensick, president and CEO of the YMCA of South Palm Beach County. “Healthy living and encouraging social responsibility, it’s at the heart of what this campaign is about.” For the YMCA Zoe represents every child, who, given the right tools, can reach their potential. To bring the national campaign closer to home, the YMCA of South Palm Beach County had two 8-year old volunteers, Zepplyn Berry of Boca Raton and Giada Caniza of Boynton Beach announce their candidacy for Mayor of their hometowns. Each candidate had a unique experience, shadowing their mayor around for a day, so they could find out just what they were getting themselves into. Zepplyn Berry a third-grader who attends Del Prado Elementary School in Boca and is on the Y’s swim team didn’t think the job was very busy but admitted that Mayor Haynie works hard. Zepplyn’s platform was clear. “I want kids to read more and more kids need to learn how to swim,” she said. “Reading books can teach you new things; they’re very interesting and fun.” Mayor Haynie gave Zepplyn her seal of approval. “She’s very mature,” said Mayor Haynie. “We discussed her platform for her candidacy, all very important issues that I have used many times when

September 23- September 29 , 2016

I’ve run for mayor – we’re aligned.” The mayor not only handed Zepplyn a resounding endorsement, but a proclamation, proclaiming Sept. 13 as Zepplyn Berry for Mayor Day in Boa Raton. Like any candidate Zepplyn didn’t miss a chance to say a few words about one of her favorite organizations, the Y. “It’s really fun,” she said. “It gives me confidence to excel at school, it teaches me discipline and keeps me active, it teaches me core values – responsibility, honesty and caring.” Running for Boynton Beach Mayor is 8-year-old Giada Caniza, a thirdgrader at Freedom Shores Elementary School in Boynton Beach whose hobbies include dance. After following Mayor Grant around for a day, she summed him up. “Mayor Grant is a very good man,” she said. “He is smart. He inspired me to be more like a mayor. I’m a caring, honest, respectful person.” Giada stepped up to the podium, declared her candidacy and spoke a little about her platform. “I want to be mayor of Boynton Beach,” she said. “I want to help other people have a healthy and nice life.” Giada’s aims to protect people, animals and stop bullying. Giada also enjoys the YMCA. “We have fun,” she said. “I like being out with lots of my friends here.” Mayor Grant admits that his first introduction to the YMCA was through the Village People and that iconic song. With five months under his belt, the newly elected mayor said that Boynton’s Park and Recreation Department would partner with the YMCA to work to expand the Y’s reach in the community. “The YMCA is a wonderful place,” said Grant. “These are two such bright young ladies,” said Mayor Haynie. “It’s just so nice to see the YMCA encourage such social responsibility in the next generation – and a lot of fun.” On hand to give a little sage advice was the former mayor of Delray Beach, Jeff Perlman. “Being mayor is important,” said Perlman. “Your job is to protect the city and move it forward.” He encouraged the girls to seek this local position because of the immediate difference you can make in your community. “Be mayor of your hometown,” said Perlman. “If you have an idea on a Tuesday night and if two others on Council agree, you can see change on a Wednesday morning. You can really move the needle here.”

sports FAU Fights Hard But Falls Short in Miami By: Stephanie Fonseca Photo by: Gabriela Heizer

It was a game that FAU football was excited about. Accomplishing their mission, as Coach Charlie Partridge said, with a win against Southern Illinois, FAU was ready for their next mission. Amidst the crowd of “boo’s” as the Owls emerge from the tunnel to the Hard Rock Stadium with a little over 57,000 fans in the stands. FAU was nervous and it showed with the several false starts that hurt FAU after the opening punt. But nerves also hit Miami when, quarterback, Brad Kayaa’s first passes of the game missed his target, until Kayaa launches a ball over top and finds Rayshawn Jenkins for 46 yards. But Miami couldn't capitalize and tried to settle for a field goal that got blocked by FAU’s Tray Henderson and recovered by Raekwon Williams. FAU knew it was a tough task but took on the challenge, and made Miami sweat. In the second possession of

the game Kayaa got intercepted by Nate Ozdemir. FAU held their ground but the pressure was too much as the offense couldn’t progress. The defense gave Miami a tough time, but running back Mark Walton didn’t let that stop him. With 4 touchdowns and 155 yards rushing, Walton walked off as the best man on the field. For every touchdown Miami made FAU had a response, and Gregory Howell added to the Owls scoreboard and completed the game with 75 yards rushing. But even with Howells attempt to shorten the deficit, Miami pulled away in the fourth quarter. Head Coach Charlie Partridge gave credit where it was due, but also pointed out things that,” there are things we did at times that made us look like a program that's continuing to go the direction we want it to go, but we're clearly not there yet.” FAU will be back at to the Burrow on Saturday, September 21, at 6 p.m against Ball State.

Boca High Beats Spanish River 31-7

By: Stephanie Fonseca

The stands were filled with Black and Gold, and painted paw prints all over. Coming out of a bye week, Boca High had, what would be considered a full house, for their first district game of the season against Spanish River High. The first quarter was quiet. Both teams were observing each other looking for any signs of weakness. Boca High started to “find its groove” as Coach Davis described it, in the second quarter and third quarter, putting up 31 unanswered points. Junior Receiver and Safety for the Bobcats, Rod Evans (11), had a night of stats with 2 touchdown catches for a total of 33 yards. Evans also had a 53 yard-punt return that led to a third touchdown by the junior running back, Prednar Edmon (3). It was a game controlled by the two juniors. Evans had a key interception and Edmon recovered a blocked kick at the Bobcats 15 yard-line. Senior kicker, Karmin Darwick (60), added to the board with a 28 yard field goal, as well as Senior quarterback,

Micah Leon (7), who ran for a 16 yard touchdown. At the 6 minute mark of the fourth quarter the Spanish River Sharks responded to the Bobcats 31-0 run. On a pass by Sharks quarterback Connor Tribby found Eddy Guessi for a 27 yard touchdown. “It was a competitive district game and we took advantage and capitalized on Spanish Rivers’ errors. We found our groove and took a commanding lead,” said Coach Davis But looking back to past games where Boca High also had commanding leads and let the game slightly slip away coach Davis also pointed out, “the big thing I stress is don’t let Boca High beat Boca High, any overthinking can be something teams can capitalize on.” The Sharks(2-2) look forward to their Homecoming game against Lake Worth High this Friday, September 23, at 7 p.m. Boca High advances to 3-0 and will be traveling for their next game away at Santaluces High on Friday, September 23, at 7 p.m.
