Community Political Novice Challenge Incumbent for Boca Raton Open Seat By Staff Reports A semi-retired flight attendant is challenging incumbent Scott Singer for a seat on the Boca Raton City Council in the Mar. 14 election. Patti Dervishi, who bills herself as an outsider, says she is tired of the way business is done in City Hall. “For the last 15 years, the city council has been in cahoots with certain developers without giving citizens a voice in what city council approved for this city,” she said. “The time has come that citizens need to be elevated to the top of the city’s organizational chart with city council serving tax paying citizens, where they were intended to be, instead of the other way around.” Singer, who is seeking his second term, said he wants to maintain best-in-class public safety, increase economic development efforts to attract outstanding companies and workforce talent and keep taxes low for families and businesses. He also wants to protect against overdevelopment, and develop “longterm strategies to ensure Boca Raton continues to progress as a world-class city.” “It’s been incredibly rewarding serving the residents of Boca Raton,” he said, adding that he accomplished an initiative in each of the six areas he identified at the onset. “Nearly three years have flown by, I’m proud of what we have accomplished, in terms of keeping taxes low, keeping our streets safer, cutting red tape and preserving green space. But we have greater potential and that’s why I’m so excited about serving for a second term.” In comparison, Dervishi is in stark contrast from Singer. An attorney and small businessman, Singer is well polished and articulate. Dervishi on the other hand, often speaks in two- or three-word sentences. Singer wants a thriving, walkable downtown streetscape with a traffic bypass to divert pass-through traffic away from

Federal Highway and onto Dixie Highway. Dervishi, a 30-year city recident, thinks progress is moving too rapidly. She bemoans developers and accuses her opponent of taking money from developers, general contractors and architects, who do business with the city. “I’m funding my own campaign.” She said, adding that she has gotten a few dollars from supporters. “He takes money from developers. I will not accept blood money from (developers).” Dervishi said she is seeking the office decided because her pleas to council members over the last 10 years have gone unheard, so she to act. “Never once were they addressed,” Dervishi, 70, said. “We were insulted. So three years I decided the only way to get city resident issues addressed was to get majority on city council.” She thinks she has two ideal candidates seeking the other vacant council seat in Andrea O’Rourke and Al Zucaro, who is running for mayor. All three live in the Golden Triangle. “This is a golden opportunity. We have three citizens’ advocates running, which would be a majority sitting on city council,” she said. Singer serves on the State Attorney’s Sober Homes Task Force, the Growth Management and Economic Affairs Legislative Policy Committee of the Florida League of Cities, and the Palm Beach County League of Cities’ Economy Task Force. He is also the city’s alternate delegate to the Palm Beach County League of Cities. Singer was first elected to the Boca Raton City Council without opposition in 2014 and Dervishi said she was not going to let him get a free ride again. “Scott Singer, my opponent, was going to run unopposed. Scott has never been elected to office in Boca Raton and I just couldn’t let that happen,” she said.

Respected and Successful Florida Policymaker Joins FAU

By: Joshua Glanzer Jeff Atwater, who brings years of experience in finance in the public and private sectors and executive leadership in Florida as a member of the Governor’s cabinet, has agreed to become Florida Atlantic University’s vice president for strategic initiatives and chief financial officer. Atwater will leave his role as the state of Florida’s chief financial officer after conclusion of the 2017 legislative session. He replaces Dorothy Russell, who retired as FAU’s CFO on Jan. 31 after a decade with the University and a 40-year career in higher education. David (Art) Kite was appointed FAU’s interim vice president for financial affairs on Feb. 1. In his new role with FAU, Atwater will lead the University’s strategic initiatives and economic development opportunities as well as manage the budget. As a vice president, Atwater will serve on the University’s Executive Leadership Team, which reports directly to FAU President John Kelly. Atwater will combine his role as CFO with overall responsibility for a wide

array of economic development opportunities, including identifying and establishing public-private partnerships and formulating unique initiatives that align with the University’s strategic plan. President John Kelly said Atwater was his first choice for this expanded CFO role. “I met Jeff soon after I became FAU president and was immediately struck by his presence. As the CFO of the world’s 16th largest economy — called the state of Florida — his experience and ability to navigate complex financial waters speaks for itself,” Kelly said. “When I approached Jeff about joining us here, it was immediately obvious he cares passionately about FAU. There is no better person to help guide this University’s finances and corporate relationships as we continue with unbridled ambition to make FAU America’s fastest improving university.” As Florida’s CFO, Atwater led the Department of Financial Services and its 13 divisions to national recognition for the financial management of the state, financial transparency and financial literacy. Atwater said the South Florida region has long known of his enthusiasm for FAU and he is excited for the opportunity to further the University’s reputation. “As a parent of FAU graduates, I cannot think of a better place to begin the next phase of my career,” Atwater said. “I am extremely grateful to have served my state as its CFO, and I will dedicate as much energy to my new role with FAU.”

It’s Past Time for us to Recognize That Black History is American History The student’s eyes opened wide when I told her there was a time – not too long ago – when black teachers in the Palm Beach County school system did not earn the same salaries as their white counterparts. As she listened more, she learned that it was a man from Delray Beach – retired principal C. Spencer Pompey – who was instrumental in changing that. Earlier this week, I reminded them that the year was 1942, when 107 black school teachers were angry because they did not, unlike their white peers, receive a $25-a-month raise that year. The black teachers reached out to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for help and their general council, “a tall, lanky fellow by the name of Thurgood Marshall met with us,” Mr. Pompey recalled. Marshall won the case, which became a landmark class-action lawsuit. He used that precedent 12 years later when he argued the Brown vs. Board of Education decision that outlawed segregated schools. He was later was appointed to the US Supreme Court, where he served for 24 years until he retired in 1991. That was one of the local stories that were recounted in schools across the district this month in observance of Black History Month, an observance that

stretches back to the early 20th century, and remains relevant today. It began in the 1920s as Negro History Week and later evolved into Black History Month. Though it is hard for many to fathom, Black history is American history. And while Black history in the past has often been under-emphasized in classrooms and in our nation's consciousness, some educators have taken measures to host special events and incorporate lessons on the accomplishments of blacks. Some schools observed with performances and poetry readings, celebrated Black scientists and mathematicians and one created a wax museum, which highlighted important figures in Black history. At Plumosa School of the Arts in Delray Beach, fourth and fifth grade students researched important figures in Black history, and hosted a wax museum for students, community members and parents. Orchard View Elementary students held a Celebration of Scientists and Mathematicians, followed by a presentation of science fair projects and hands-on science demonstrations. Students at Pine Grove Elementary, Village Academy and Daughter of Zion got to spend a day onboard Black History 365, an interactive traveling museum. Through a collaborative partnership with the Spady Museum, Estella’s Brilliant Bus,

the KOP Mentoring Network outfitted the bus with artifacts and memorabilia to show the students some of the inventions by blacks. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks may be the most recognized names during Black History Month observances, and rightly so, but they are far from being alone when it comes to important and meaningful contributions of black Americans. Through artifacts and printed documents, the docents showed the students an emerging American economy built on the backs of black men, women and children. They learned of great American inventors such as Thomas Edison. But they also learned of the ingenuity of Lewis Latimer who invented the filament that made Edison’s light possible. They learned of Benjamin Banneker, the surveyor who designed Washington, D.C., Norbet Rilleux who refined sugar, Granville T. Woods, the inventor of the steam boiler and Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, the first surgeon to operate on the human heart. They also heard from some local living legends whose contributions improved life for today’s blacks. For example, students at Pine Grove heard from Yvonne Odom, a retired educator who in 1961 was the first black student to attend Seacrest

High. Seacrest High was later merged with Carver High to become Atlantic High School. By 1961 public schools were trying to meet the demands of a 1954 Supreme Court decision that said separate but equal schools were inherently unequal. And Alfred “Zack” Straghn shared with students at Daughter of Zion some memories of what it was like when he fought to integrate the public beach in Delray Beach. He also told them how he and others fought to get the first blacks hired on the police force. I have been involved in Black History observances dating back several years, and I marvel how much I am still learning every year as I continue my research. There are those who maintain that there need to be more than one month to honor achievements of blacks. And that criticism is largely justified. We should all take a little time — in February and beyond — to learn about our country and the people who made it great. There is power in knowledge. The more we know, the more we realize that we have accomplished so much together. But there is more yet to learn.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Proceed With Caution, But Reach Your Goal! When you are convinced of doing what is correct, along with whatever is expected of you, there’s no need to have fear. At the same time, you don’t have to seek permission from anyone to execute the good anticipated by others. The famous 18th century Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, recognized and acted on these verities which he also encouraged many in his day to observe. Once, he challenged his congregants and readers with these wise words: “Truth is the ‘light’ by which to find your way out of darkness. Turn it on.”

This is a most valid and relevant recommendation to all 21st century earth dwellers, especially in that the darkness has increased, and many lights that used to shine more brightly before, are hidden from view on many of the pathways that multitudes are traveling today. The problem of walking in darkness is that very easily many lose their way; they find themselves in detours they never chose to enter, and hit hard walls along their path, by virtue of not seeing with clarity whereto they are proceeding! Fortunately, that wise young

Rebbe, who died at the age of 38, recommended something still most relevant today for persons eager to pursue the right direction, so as to arrive at the place they need to reach, even when momentarily left in utter confusion and darkness. He stated, “No matter how far you’ve strayed, returning to God is always possible,” also adding, “Never despair! Never! It is forbidden to give up hope.” Our imperative is to outline our directions while on earth so that we construct the correct maps from which we do not deviate, in order to accomplish some-

thing significant each day, which will bring us step by step to places and situations which advance us rather than retard our progress! We must be ever ready to respond intelligently to the unique query once posed to an individual or group: “Where will you be when get to where you’re going?”To that end, one needs to know the current location, the forward progress being made, and the correct trajectory to pursue, that leads to the destination one is to reach!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Can you think of someone that’s genuinely humble? How about someone who has been extremely successful – and yet humble nonetheless? Does anyone come to mind? Recently I listened to a talk radio show in which the commentators were discussing humility, and how it relates to a person’s success. One speaker offered his view that humility would hinder a person from succeeding. Someone might project a sense of being humble outwardly, he said, but inwardly the individual must maintain arrogance and extreme self-confidence to become truly successful. That prompted me to start wondering, is that true? Are humility and success mutually exclusive? Then I remembered the classic business book by Jim Collins, Good to Great, in which he describes what he terms “Level 5 leaders,” people that led organizations that were not merely good, but great. After much research, Collins and his team discovered that among the qualities top leaders possessed, they included both humility and “ferocious resolve, a stoic determination to do whatever needs to be done to make a company great.” Contrary to the talk-show speaker’s opinion, leaders who guided their companies from good to great did not have to believe they were the central focus of everything that happened. In fact, Collins wrote, “The good-to-great leaders never wanted to become larger-than-life heroes. They never aspired to be put on a pedestal or become unreachable icons. They were seemingly ordinary people quietly producing extraordinary results.” They also were quick to deflect praise, redirecting it to their teams.

How does this happen? Today the media spotlight seems to shine brightest on egotistical corporate leaders, sports figures, entertainers and other celebrities. There does not seem to be much of a “market” for the self-effacing, humble type of leader that Collins described in his book. And yet, according to the book of Proverbs, humility is a prized commodity for anyone holding a leadership capacity: Leaders that focus on self are flirting with disaster. Throughout history we see examples of self-centered leaders whose decisions were shaped by ambition, pride and greed, leading to their ultimate demise. “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom” (Proverbs 11:2). “Before his downfall a man’s heart is proud, but humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 18:12). Humble leaders recognize the source of their abilities and accomplishments. We all have innate strengths and abilities; we may have worked hard to develop and refine them, but often the talents were there already. Recognizing God as the source is a big step toward becoming a humble, yet successful leader. “The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 15:33). “Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life” (Proverbs 22:4). Humility enables a leader to seek – and receive – counsel and advice from others. The humble leader understands he or she is not all-knowing, so they are very responsive to the input from others regarding important decisions. “Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him” (Proverbs 26:12). Heizer Media Group

An Enigmatic “Great Wall”

Photos by Charlotte Beasley

This week my travels took me to the beautiful Temple Solel in Hollywood, Fl. where a black tie fundraiser gala was held to support the Miami Heart Transplant Inst. A big thank you to Sandi Solomon our hostess for the evening to this very worthy event. Food was great, a great show with two comedian’s and a singer and a fabulous auction. I purchased two artworks and a gold box and tray to support this charity.

A very lovely evening at the fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Association’s fashion show and luncheon which will take place on March 10th at the Boca West Country Club was hosted by Pam Polani at Sklar’s Furnishings on Federal Highway. Two awards were given out to the police and fire rescue workers and these fine gentlemen will be in the fashion show luncheon on March 10th.

“The Great Wall” is a real headscratcher of a movie. Is it supposed to be an historical drama? Is it a really low-key comedy? Or how about a monster movie? There are plenty of pre-historiclooking CGI monsters swarming about and Matt Damon plays William, the dragon-slayer. Perhaps something was lost in the translation. This is the first English language film for Chinese director Yimou Zhang (“House of Flying Daggers”). Also it is in 3-D format, which puts me at a disadvantage. I am blind in my left eye. In order to appreciate 3-D one must have full binocular vision. I have never had that. When I put on the silly 3-D glasses the image becomes clearer, but not perfect. There are ghost images that can only be realized by a fully-sighted viewer. The plot, such as it is, involves William and his sidekick Tovar (Chilean

actor Pedro Pascal) searching for “black powder,” which is another name for gunpowder. The duo gets imprisoned within the Great Wall just in time for an invasion by the CGI reptiles. The time is about 1,000 years ago, and black powder was a mysterious new invention. William’s main weapon is a bow and arrow, and of course he is a deadly shot. William enlists the help of Commander Lin Mae (Tian Jing) who happens to be an attractive young woman. Willem Dafoe plays a character named Ballad, whose purpose I never quite understood. Predictably there is a final battle royal between William and all those CGI monsters. Guess who wins? I’m done with my head-scratching. See “The Great Wall” if you’d like. Visually it is very impressive. Two stars

Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Science hosted the 10th annual southeast Florida regional competition for the Science Olympiad on Saturday, Feb. 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Science and Engineering buildings and General Classrooms buildings, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Students from 19 middle and 45 high schools from Palm Beach, Broward, Lee, Martin and Miami-Dade counties competed in the event. The events in the competition were developed and judged by FAU professors, as well as undergraduate and graduate students. A wide variety

of topics in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines were covered, including anatomy, astronomy, water quality, entomology, math, simple and complex machines and more. Students worked in teams of two or more in lab-based events conducting experiments, in knowledgebased events, in taking written tests on research materials, and in engineering-based events building devices that accomplish a task. Science Olympiad is a national, nonprofit organization begun in 1984 by K-12 science teachers to improve the quality of science education and foster a love of science among students. Teams from all 50 states participated in the Science Olympiad, one of the premier science competitions in the nation. Students who win at the regional competitions advance to the state tournament, and those winners compete at the national tournament.

Cold River Records has signed Placer Creek Music Publishing writer, Maggie Baugh, to its artist roster. Cold River’s President, Pete O’Heeron, made the announcement during the label’s pre-CRS party at the Omni Hotel. “Maggie is a firecracker in everything she does—her writing, her performing and her stage presence,” said O’Heeron, who discovered Baugh through a video performance on social media. “We have been cultivating her artistry for some time now and we are so excited to finally share her talents with the rest of the world.” “This is a dream come true! From the first time I met Pete and the rest of the Cold River family it felt like we had known each other all of our lives,” said Maggie Baugh. “They have such a strong belief in me and I am so excited to be officially part of the family.” The Boca Raton native started playing violin at the age of six and started songwriting and performing

live at 12. She recently released her new album, Catch Me, collaborating with Nashville songwriters, including Bridgette Tatum (“She’s Country,”) Cathy Majeski (“How Was I To Know”) and Chad Carlson (Grammy-winning engineer on hits by Taylor Swift.) The 11-track album, produced by Ben Thompson and Chad Carlson, was funded by a Kickstarter campaign where the teenager raised close to $25k-over 250% of her goal. The 16-year-old multi-instrumentalist (guitar and fiddle) and singersongwriter has played fiddle onstage with Neal McCoy and Charlie Daniels Band and has opened for Neal McCoy, Craig Morgan, Phil Vassar, Sam Hunt, Cole Swindell, Mark Chesnutt, Drake White, Old Dominion, Claire Dunn and fellow label mate, Drew Baldridge. Baugh is currently enrolled at Boca Raton High School and Cold River Records plans to lauch Baugh into the country world in 2018, after she completes her time in High School.

sports Owls Soar Past Hawks in Baseball Season Opener

The Florida Atlantic University Owls started their season with a strong offensive night as they easily beat the Monmouth University Hawks 16-5 Friday night at FAU Baseball Stadium. The Owls were coming off a hot 2016 season in which they had the best record in the Conference USA standings. Starting pitcher Alex House set the tone early for FAU by striking out the first three batters in the top half of the first. The Owls then put on the pressure offensively with a leadoff single from Tyler Frank. After a hit batter and passed ball, they already had two runners in scoring position. An error by the Hawks’ center fielder Tom Jakubowski allowed Frank to score the team’s first run of the night. They added two more in the inning thanks to a safety squeeze from shortstop Stephen Kerr and a single from Kevin Abraham. It was the first plate appearance for Abraham since missing all of last season. House retired the next four batters in the second and third innings before the Hawks’ catcher Ryan Bailey connected for a home run. They scored once more to bring them back to within one by the middle of the third. House found his rhythm again in the fourth however and the Owls tacked on four more runs which brought the score to 7-2. That would be the last inning for the Hawk’s starting pitcher Ricky Dennis. Even though he allowed seven runs, only three of them were earned. The Owls continued swinging the bat well in the fifth as Austin Langham brought in two more with a home run to left field, but things got a little scary for FAU in the sixth inning.

After increasing their lead to 12-2, Abraham was hit in the face by a pitch and instantly fell to the ground. He was helped off the field and ultimately left for X-rays after spending some time on the bench. “It breaks my heart,” FAU coach John McCormack said. “I hope that it’s nothing more than just a little facial laceration and maybe a bad bruise and we move on.” The Owls continued to push forward after the injury however and scored four more runs in the bottom of the seventh, increasing their lead to 16-2. Three of them came off of a home run from Esteban Puerta, which was followed by David Miranda scoring their final run of the night on a wild pitch. The Hawks made a little noise in the final two innings, bringing the score to 16-5, but they did not come close as the Owls took the victory. It was the first win for House, who pitched six quality innings. Jordan Poore, Weston Clemente and Blake Sanderson each pitched an inning after not playing at all last season to close out the game. “I’m happy for the guys,” McCormack said. “The really good thing about it is we had some young guys get to play, we had some guys that hadn’t pitched before…get in the game.” Offensive numbers were strong for the Owls as three players had multiple RBIs including five for Puerta. Jared Shouppe also scored four runs, just one short of tying FAU’s singlegame record. The game was the first of a three-game homestand which concludes on Sunday, Feb. 19.
