COMMUNITY FAU Medical students Celebrate at Symphony of the Americas “ Match Day” Finishes 30th Season with Conrad Tao Special Concert

Symphony of the Americas finishes its 30th Anniversary Season with the return appearance of spectacular pianist and composer Conrad Tao, heralded by Forbes in its Top 30 Under 30. Conrad celebrated the Symphony’s 25th Anniversary performing all 5 Beethoven Piano Concertos in 2 back-to back concert evenings. Now it is only fitting, while he is still under 30, for him to commemorate the 30th Anniversary Season with a special dénouement concert. Highlights include Conrad performing Prokofiev’s 2nd Piano Concerto as well as “Over,” a work of his own composition, with the Symphony for a gala celebratory evening you won't want to miss! Conrad Tao is a leader of the new generation of classical music. A former prodigy, Conrad has emerged as a mature, thoughtful and thoughtprovoking artist with both a singular vision and the talent to realize it. His ceaseless exploration lends a new, contemporary vitality to his much-lauded performances of the core repertory, further distinguishing him as one of the most compelling forces on the scene today. Tao has appeared worldwide as

a pianist and composer and has been dubbed “a musician of probing intellect and open-hearted vision” by the New York Times, “a thoughtful and mature composer” by NPR, and “ferociously talented” by Time Out New York. In the 2013-14 season, while serving as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra's artist-in-residence, Tao premiered his orchestral composition, The World is Very Different Now. Commissioned in observance of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the work was described by the New York Times as “shapely and powerful.” In September 2015, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia premiered his piano concerto An Adjustment, with Tao at the piano. The Philadelphia Inquirer declared the piece abundant in “compositional magic,” a “most imaginative [integration of] spiritual post-Romanticism and ‘90s club music.” A Warner Classics recording artist, Tao’s first two albums Voyages and Pictures have been praised by NPR, The New York Times, The New Yorker’s Alex Ross, and many more.

The soon-to-be graduates of the class of 2018 in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University joined thousands of medical students across the country today in a “rite of passage” at “Match Day” to find out where they will be spending the next several years of medical training as residents. Promptly at noon, along with other graduating medical students around the United States, the Class of 2018 opened their sealed envelopes containing their residency match results. Match Day occurs on the third Friday of March every year where the results of the National Resident Matching Program (NMRP) are announced. Approximately one-third of the class of 2018 (23 of the 61 medical students) will remain in Florida to do their residencies. In line with the FAU College of Medicine’s mission, one-third of the graduating class will enter primary care specialties. Highly competitive residency programs also are represented such as urology, anesthesiology, dermatology, neurology, orthopedics and surgery specialties. Among the various Florida institutions are: University of Florida College of Medicine - Shands Hospital, Gainesville; University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital; University of Miami Miller School of Medicine at Holy Cross; University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, Tampa; Kendall Regional Medical Center, Miami; Orange Park Medical Center, Orange Park; University of Central Florida, Orlando; and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, Boca Raton. The class of 2018 also placed in several top institutions nationally including: Harvard/ Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, New Hampshire; Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pennsylvania; Children’s National Medical Center, Washington, D.C.; Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina; Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia;

and Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York. “As you open your envelopes to learn where you will be conducting your next phase of training, you will be a giant step closer toward fulfilling your dream of becoming practicing physicians,” said Phillip Boiselle, M.D., dean of FAU’s College of Medicine as he addressed the class of 2018 during Match Day. “Wherever Match Day leads you for your future training, you will always be part of our College of Medicine family. We wish you continued success in your future endeavors as residents and physician leaders.” The NRMP uses a computer algorithm, developed in 1952 by Nobel Prize-winning economist Alvin Roth, to place students in the program that they prefer. Each residency program at a hospital has a fixed number of first-year positions that they can fill each year based on their accreditation. Leading up to the big day, each student lists in order of preference the residency program that he or she seeks to work with and each residency program then ranks its applicants in order of its own preferences. “Match Day is a momentous occasion for our students and their families, friends, colleagues and mentors,” said Stuart L. Markowitz, M.D., senior associate dean of student affairs and admissions in FAU’s College of Medicine. “Members of our class of 2018 have placed in some of the most prestigious institutions across the country and in some of the most competitive specialties in medicine.” The NRMP expects the 2018 Main Residency Match to be the largest in history, exceeding the more than 43,000 applicants who registered for the 2017 Match and the more than 31,000 positions offered last year. Results of the Main Residency Match are closely watched because they can predict future changes in the physician workforce.

FAU Recognized As One of The Top Nursing Programs in The State

Boca Church to Offer Free Professional Car Wash This Weekend By: Bryanna Basilio

By: Bryanna Basillo Florida Atlantic University has been recognized by the Annual RegisteredNursing.org RN Program State Rankings as the 13-ranked RN program in Florida. The Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University boasts a highly competitive, accredited BSN program. As part of a diverse and accomplished student body, enrolled students participate in a variety of clinical and laboratory experiences. “It is always important to consider what organization is ranking the schools and what criteria it is using to determine the ranking,” said Dr. Marlaine Smith, Dean of FAU’s college of Nursing. “We’ve received quite a few awards in the past year. The most prestigious is the US News and World Report (USNWR) rankings of Best Graduate Programs. We were ranked 39th in the US with only Jacksonville University ranked ahead of us in the state of Florida. We were ranked 16th in the US for online graduate programs for veterans.” Dr. Smith continues, “We are very proud of our undergraduate program as well. Last year we had a 100% NCLEX pass rate for our first time test takers. We admit students graduating from high school directly into the nursing major in their freshman year. The average high school GPA last year was 4.17 and the average SAT score was 1160. Our students are leaders in the national and state Student Nurses Association.” FAU Nursing is certainly not new to being recognized and the Dean explains why: “We are very unique and known

internationally for our focus on Caring Science. Our College’s educational programs, faculty research and service are grounded in the philosophy and science of caring. Our students study the relationship of caring to health and healing outcomes. They learn to listen to the person’s story…what matters most… and to respond to those calls and to nurture the person’s health, healing and well-being from before birth to death. They learn that caring for others begins with caring for self. We have a focus on holistic health…We are the only college of nursing in the US with all four degree programs endorsed by the American Holistic Nursing Credentialing Corporation.” Dr. Smith also shared her advice to future students who are interested in the program. The student should, “explore nursing to get a better idea about the discipline and profession,” she said. “Talk with nurses in practice to learn about what they do…there may be opportunities in your high school to learn about health professions…volunteer in hospitals…Talk with students in our nursing program to get a perspective on what it will take to be successful. Admission to our program requires a high GPA and SAT/ACT so developing strong study habits and preparing for those entrance exams would be important.” The ranking procedure for the top 50 nursing schools in Florida is done by analyzing current and historical NCLEX-RN "pass rates", meaning the percentage of graduates who pass the exam, out of the 144 RN programs in the state, which FAU scores a 93.90. Programs reviewed include schools that offer an Associate in Nursing (ADN/ASN), BSN, or Direct-Entry MSN Degree.

Typically, everyone loves a clean car, but not everyone loves to clean their car or pay for a professional car wash which can cost cost $25-$50. But for two hours this Saturday, March 24, The Journey Church of Boca Raton is offering a free car wash for the community. The Journey’s Free Professional Car Wash will take place THIS Saturday, March 24, 10:00am – 12:00pm, at their New Ministry and Worship Center located at 2200 NW Boca Raton Blvd. in Boca Raton. The church will be providing a free, by-hand, professional car wash for as many people as possible during the two-hour time frame. “This won’t be an average rinseand-run car wash,” said Josh Patterson, Pastor of Growth Groups at The Journey. “This will be the best car wash in all of Boca.” Volunteers from the church will be present to hand-wash cars, wash windows, shine tires, and provide a suitable experience for all of their guests. Free coffee and donuts will also be provided for all guests who stop by to have their car cleaned. No donations will be accepted as the church is offering this

service free of charge to the community as a way to serve the city leading up to Easter Sunday, April 1. “We’re always looking for opportunities to share God’s love in practical ways and providing a free, high-quality car wash for the people of Boca Raton is a great way for our church to serve families in our community,” said Jason Hatley, Lead Pastor of The Journey Church. The car cash is just one of many efforts the church has done to serve the community. Journey Church has been known to buy down the cost of gas at the pump for drivers, provide free hotdogs and water at the beach and is a long-time partner of Boca Helping Hands. Hatley says the church is “always on the lookout for creative ways to make a difference in people’s lives”. The Journey Church is a casual, contemporary, Christian church that meets each Sunday at 9:30am and 11:00am at Grandview Preparatory School. Enough of the Politics, Give us Some Good News As I pen this column, I am smiling from ear to ear. My heart and mind are so relieved, I am ecstatic. Finally, after months of listening to friends hurl insults against each other in candidates’ forums, the caustic emails cluttering my box, once civil residents exposing each other’s dirty laundry, and campaign signs littering our streets, the 2018 municipal election is over. Yeah! With that season in the rearview mirror, we can get back to reporting the good news in our communities. We need not look hard to find the latest happenings. A group of men in Delray Beach has been meeting monthly to share ideas and come up with solutions to improve their community and help each other professionally. “Men Talk” meets on the first Friday of each month at the Fairfield Inn on West Atlantic Avenue. Delray Beach resident Chris Ceasar’s vision was to use the forum

to empower young men with tools to navigate the challenges they face every day. At a recent meeting, they got a chance to bounce ideas off each other and learn from some of the “seasoned leaders” in the community. Among the power houses present were long-time radio disc jockey and businessman James Thomas, who helped launched the careers of many prominent media personalities, retired NFL cornerback Brandon Flowers and Delray Beach Community Improvement Director Michael Coleman, who has given many local residents a new lease on life through employment. Among the many topics they discussed were wealth management, preparing yourself for success, giving back and mentoring. To show their commitment, some of the men, including Ceasar’s older brother, Bill Ceasar, have been mentoring a young man who had an interest and showed promise as a

boxer. Bruce Laster, 21, lost both parents a few years ago and had not identified any role models to emulate. He was determined. He made time to prepare between working at a hotel in Boca Raton and at a fast food restaurant in Boynton Beach. Chris Ceasar recalls looking out his window at 3 a.m. and there was Laster punching a bag or running three miles to the beach and back. They told him if he wanted to be the best in boxing, the hotel and restaurant gig would not cut it. So they reached out to their contacts, dug into their pockets and raised enough money to send him off to Las Vegas Wednesday night, where he will train at the famed Mayweather Boxing Club for a month. The men saw a young man with unlimited potential and threw their arms around him. As he embarks on another phase of his career,

I hope he takes this experience with him and pay it forward wherever he calls home. Another young man who already is showing gratitude to his community is Brisly Estime, a graduate of Atlantic High and Syracuse University who now plays for the New York Jets. He recently sponsored a kickball tournament at Merritt Park, which drew several segments of the city together. Christopher Haynes said he was very impressed and happy to see the different sections of the community, including the police, fire fighters and former gang members, playing together for a good cause. “ We all come from different walks of life and even though we have our differences in our personal lives, we can still get together for one of our own and support him for what he is doing,” said Haynes, the disc jockey from Beach Boys Entertainment and a local educator.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Be Informed! It is amazing what the current age has brought to humankind, and continues to provide. In a matter of just a few years, information truly exploded, in bringing new tools which accelerate the acquisition of important new facts, especially what can be beneficial to all humans. Sane persons desire to be informed about new trends, about dangers which may be affecting the human race, concerning the threat of terrorist organizations around the globe, about physical maladies which may be spreading world-wide, and pose a threat to everyone wherever anyone may be situation on earth. Information is most vital. People need to lead informed lives. And today

we all have the means of getting information, retaining it, and adding more to it in terms of advances or declines of the same. All humans need to be up-to-date about what is crucial for their daily operation and, especially, for their very survival on earth. We have reached a time in our lives when it is possible to carry the whole world in our hands, as far as having an operative cellular phone which can provide all the basic information one needs about weather conditions, crimes in the neighborhood, threats to one’s security, national and international happenings, and all else that gives one the opportunity to be truly prepared for whatever may come next, as well as to act in the light of what’s taking place right now!

On account of the difficult days in which we live (despite the many advances that have taken place to improve the quality of our life), we still need to take the initiative in seeking whatever will truly help us to live with confidence on account of the information we are constantly being made aware of. Even with respect to weather changes, we need to be prepared with information we secure about conditions that may bring storms, tornadoes, or other potential dangerous situations, based on scientific methods and devices that can help us intelligently to anticipate such alterations. Sadly, there are many people who don’t want to be bothered with the information that is always available. They

consider a waste of time to check the newspapers, to watch television news, to talk intelligently with neighbors and friends about conditions that surround us, wherever we may be. Let us all be more proactive in seeking information with greater diligence, and acting on it accordingly. If that is an activity which is repulsive to you, for some reason, at least find some reliable friend or relative who can keep you well informed, so that changes which are inevitable to occur won’t meet you by surprise, but will allow you to make the necessary plans to avoid the bad consequences of conditions you may have to encounter, whether you like it or not. Whatever be your way, be informed!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Boca Raton Teenager Honored with International Youth Award

Ava Goldstone, an 18-year old young woman who has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and volunteered countless hours to support children with disabilities, has been named the 2018 CARTER Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy, Individual, by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). The CARTER Award for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy honors a young person with a proven record of exceptional generosity who demonstrates outstanding civic and charitable responsibility and whose philanthropy encourages others to engage on a community, national, and/or international level. "I feel so fortunate to be recognized by the Association for Fundraising Professionals for my role in bringing the Boundless Dreams Playground to fruition,” said Ava. “Once built, Boundless Dreams will be a hub of energy and excitement for my community." Ava, a senior at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has become a champion for children with disabilities through her work and fundraising for The Miracle League of Palm Beach County (MLPBC). The League is a nonprofit that provides activities for children with disabilities through baseball. Ava started her engagement as a volunteer buddy, helping children hold a bat, hit a ball, and run the bases. Soon, however, she wanted to do more, so she secured an internship with MLPBC, helping to organize the organization’s first annual Dinner on the Diamond, which ultimately raised $60,000. But Ava’s work was just starting. Noticing that a nearby playground was not accessible for children with wheelchairs and other supporting equipment, she began to research and raise funds for new equipment that would accommodate all of the children participating in MLPBC, as well as other children in the community. Her Boundless Dreams Playground project was born. Ava’s ambitious goal was $210,000. She began her fundraising efforts by creating a calendar of MLPBC kids in action, which sold out, and then spearheading a mini-golf event.

Each event raised $2,500. She then worked with staff at MLPBC to write two successful grants to the Women’s Impact 100 and the Men’s Impact 100, which awarded Boundless Dreams $100,000 and $50,000, respectively. Most recently, Ava participated in the Palm Beach Philanthropy Tank, where she presented her project to four community philanthropists. Her Boundless Dreams Playground project was awarded the top grant of $15,000. Two other philanthropists in the audience saw her presentation and were so inspired that they invited her to submit requests for funding. Ava made in-person presentations to both of these philanthropists (one foundation and one individual), and received two grants totaling $40,000— reaching her final goal of $210,000! “The impact Ava is having on the world around her is incredible for someone so young. We can all learn from the selfless and creative example she sets, no matter what our age,” said Bob Carter, CFRE, chairman of Carter, a consulting firm that helps nonprofits across the globe maximize their philanthropic potential. “Not only should we listen to young adults, but we should also encourage their generous acts of kindness and charity, especially when many people only get to see the darker side of human nature. It is Carter’s intention, and has been since our founding, to help ensure philanthropy’s future by internationally highlighting outstanding young people like Ava.” With over 60,000 people in Palm Beach County with special needs, the construction of the Boundless Dreams Playground will provide all children with the access to a barrier-free and inclusive play area. The City of Delray Beach, Fla., will have its first barrier-free playground and has agreed to take care of the ongoing maintenance of the playground. Ava’s work with The Miracle League also has sparked her desire to advocate for the special needs community in her future educational and occupational endeavors. “What else can you say about a person who has demonstrated the kind of generosity, spirit, and commitment that Ava has?” said Mike Geiger, president and CEO of AFP. “What she has done is so impressive for a person of any age, and the impact she has made will be felt for decades to come in her community. All of us at AFP are humbled to be able to recognize her for her extraordinary philanthropic work.”

PBSC Professors Inspire Alumnus to Publish First Book When Palm Beach State College alumnus and employee John Charmant came to the United States in 2009 from Haiti, he couldn’t speak English and struggled adapting to the culture. Today, thanks to the support and encouragement of some of his high school and PBSC professors, he is the proud author of “Luxers’ Multiverse: The Grand Design,” an English book published earlier this year. The book is set in the year 2090, where the traditional borders between countries have dissolved, leaving only a handful of large, competitive regions. Solar energy dominates, capitalizing on the increased radiation that penetrates the atmosphere due to global warming. Flying cars fill the skies and houses are carved from solid gemstones. It is into this strange and distant future that the book’s main character Adnex Courageux is born. “It never crossed my mind that one day I would become an author,” said Charmant, who learned to speak and write English in high school ESOL classes. “As a Haitian student, I often struggled with writing but I was fortunate to have a very considerate instructor in my high school teacher Trinesha Bloomfield who taught me the right way, encouraged me, and nudged me along when I needed a push. One time, she even said to me: ‘I see a writer and philosopher in you,’” Charmant said. After graduation, he then enrolled at PBSC but did not yet envision becoming a writer. “I wanted to just obtain my associates degree and then move on to learn something at FAU,” said Charmant, who received his Associate in Arts degree at PBSC in 2014. “I wasn’t sure what to do although I had a passion for writing.” One of Charmant’s English professors, Laura Dejong, took notice of his writing skills after a class assignment one day. She gave him a free thinking assignment where he chose to write a fiction and horror story on Mozart’s Requiem. “When she read it, she talked to me after class and told me that she saw a great writer in me,” Charmant said. “However, I was still resisting my call to be a writer. I couldn’t see myself as a writer due to my fear of being judged.” After three years at PBSC, Charmant’s math professors, including Reginald Butler and Jermaine Gordon, started making an impression on him concerning the relevance of mathematics. However, it wasn’t until he started attending several forum meetings at the Math Club that his quest for a more in-depth understanding of mathematics began. He became a leader and officer in the Math Club, which is when he met Math Club advisor and professor Alex Opritsa who pushed him to unfold his true potential not only as a leader but also as a writer.

www.bocaratontribune.com

“He motivated and encouraged me to design and conduct a number of different interactive presentations in the Math Club about the philosophy of mathematics,” Charmant said. “I then began to pull more toward exploring human life through the lens of mathematics and philosophy. Professor Opritsa would tell me how mathematics was not just about numbers and cool symbols but also related to deeper introspection and selfdiscovery. I kept that glued to my mind and started writing about the concept. This was for me the dawn of writing. I began to write a lot of dissertations on mathematics and philosophy.” Inspired by his presentations and seminars in the Math Club, he began to use mathematics and physics to write fiction stories. However, he would keep all those stories to himself. “Even after writing three hundred pages of the story that would later become my book, I would still hide it in my closet without ever showing it to anyone. I was overcome by fear and I let it consume me without opening up to anyone.” However, in 2016, Opritsa told Charmant something that pushed him to retrieve his writing and submit it to Dorrance publishing for consideration. “Opritsa told me that sometimes one wait later to do things in life, but later just became later. He said that if you feel like you have to do something or have a plan, do it now and plan it now. This really touched my heart, and I decided to submit an early draft of my book.” After Charmant submitted his script, he got a message from the publisher who said they wanted to publish his story as soon as they could. According to Charmant, they sent him a letter of congratulations and lauded his novel as being a beautiful piece of fiction. “Without PBSC, I would have never met the people who helped me conquer my fears and finally take the path of writing,” Charmant said. “I want to be a voice for not only the Haitians who are attending PBSC but also to all students who are afraid of exploring their potential. It is not easy but as long as you have the right people around you to encourage you, the walls that fear puts in front of you will be pulverized.” Charmant is currently an FAU student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He has been a part-time math tutor at PBSC for the past three years and writes a blog of poetry each week. He has written three books besides Luxers’ Multiverse and also speaks Italian and French. Next month, he will give a presentation titled “The Maths of Luxers’ Multiverse” during PBSC’s Math Awareness Week. The event will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in CE 119 on the Lake Worth campus.

N.S.A.L. Reception

Finding Hope this Easter

This past weekend, my travels took me to the beautiful Royal Palm Yacht Club for the National Society of Arts and Letters award reception. It was a very classy elegant affair with opera singers, violin and cello players and a great array of finger foods and champagne. Many students from FAU and Lynn University were honored and entertained the large crowd. Shari Upbin and Marshall Turkin were honored as well

Costume Museum Tour at the Wick Yesterday I attended the Costume Museum tour at the Wick Theater with my friend, Betsy Wickard from Okeechobee who has one of the costumes she wore in a show called the Goldwyn Girls displayed in the museum. We were welcomed by Kim Wick who did a very informative tour of a large group of ladies and told the story about all the costumes that were on display and how the Wick acquired them. After Betsy autographed a photo of herself and her partner and gave it to Kim Wick and it will be displayed along with the costume in the museum. We also enjoyed a delicious luncheon in the Wick Restaurant reminiscent of Tavern on the Green in New York City.

What do you hope for? Depending on the day, you may find yourself saying anything from, “I hope traffic is smooth on my commute” to “I hope the Heat make the playoffs” to “I hope my children are safe at school” to “I hope the biopsy results come back negative.” You may hope for things to go your way or fortune to favor you. And in the midst of all of these small day-to-day hopes what we’re really hoping for is a life of peace and prosperity and a better today than days past. We need hope. And just like you can’t live without oxygen, I would contend that you can’t live without hope. Hope brings life. But if we’re honest, hope – true and lasting hope – is in short supply in our culture today. We are flanked on one side by societal division, and on another by senseless tragedies. We are driven into a corner by frustrations about today and fears about tomorrow. It’s no wonder that today – perhaps more than ever – what we need most is hope. And that’s the story of Easter; discovering hope in the face of insurmountable odds. In the days after Jesus’ crucifixion over 2,000 years ago, his family, friends and followers thought all hope had been lost. It had died along with the man they’d believed to be the Messiah. Little did they know that three days later, on the very first Easter, Jesus would roll

the stone away from the entrance of his tomb and step out to offer a level of hope never before known to man – the hope of peace and joy in this life and of victory over death. Jesus continues to offer his resurrection hope to us today. This hope goes far beyond what you and I are likely to wish for on a daily basis. It is not only the living hope of his continual presence, but also the expectant hope of an eternity spent with God in heaven. As the Bible says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade,” (1 Peter 1:3). Because Jesus lives, you and I can walk in expectant hope of the abundant future we long for. Easter is a perfect time to begin discovering more about the hope Jesus offers. This Easter at The Journey Church (next Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1), our theme will be “Finding Hope” as we kick off a five-part teaching series on how to experience joy, purpose, meaning, and – you guessed it – hope in our daily lives and careers. See our ad in this edition for service times and details. Plan to join me to learn how you can be filled with hope both in the midst of today’s trials and for a happy, fulfilling future. See you Sunday!

Jason Hatley is the lead pastor of The Journey Church in Boca Raton. The Journey meets at Grandview Preparatory School (Spanish River Blvd near I-95) each Sunday at 9:30am and 11:00am, and will celebrate the Grand Opening of their brand-new building in Boca Raton in Spring 2018. For more, visit www.BocaJourney.com. Jason is the author of two books and served for ten years as a pastor in New York City before moving to South Florida. Each person who visits The Journey Church will receive a free copy of the book Unshakable: Standing Strong When Things Go Wrong.

SPORTS Even After Loss, FAU Baseball Still FAU Names Dusty May New Men’s Looking Strong Basketball Head Coach

By: Michael Demyan

The Florida Atlantic University Owls had won seven-straight heading into Sunday’s away game against the Old Dominion Monarchs, but they weren’t able to hold them off in the late innings and fell by a score of 2-1. The Owls scored their only run of the game off of a wild pitch from starter Morgan Maguire in the fourth inning, but it looked like it was going to be enough for the win. They had a chance to score again later in the sixth, but a bases loaded double play let the Monarchs escape with no extra damage. FAU starting pitcher Vince Coletti (1-1, 2.05 ERA) left the game after six, only allowing three hits and a walk while striking out four. Mark Nowatnick came in relief to pitch the seventh, but a hit batter and two costly errors allowed the Monarchs to tie the game on an unearned run. A two-out rally gave them the lead in the eighth. With a runner on first, Vinnie Pasquantino singled to advance him to third and Will Morgan followed with an RBI single to right. FAU’s Joe Montes was able to get on base with two outs in the ninth, but FAU was unable to get him home and lost 2-1.

“Today was a disappointing loss after how well the guys played the first two days,” head coach John McCormack said. “Too many mistakes cost us a chance to sweep.” It was a tough loss for the Owls, but they were nearly on their way to eightstraight victories before the late collapse. Their offense has been on a tear since the winning streak began, entering Sunday’s game with 10 or more runs scored in their past six games. Even after being limited to six hits during the last game of the series, numerous players are still holding onto hitting streaks, led by shortstop Tyler Frank getting hits in each of his past 15 games. Pedro Pages also left the game with an eight-game streak, while C-USA’s co-hitter of the week, Eric Rivera, has hit safely for seven-straight games. “Coach Mams (hitting coach Greg Mamula) has worked really hard with them, and they’ve been out here early, working on their day off, (working) by themselves, doing a really good job,” McCormack said. The Owls currently hold a 15-5 record on the season and after winning two of three against the Monarchs (8-11), their C-USA record sits at 2-1. FAU’s next game will be a rematch at the University of Miami (910) tomorrow at 6 p.m. The two teams faced each other Feb. 28 at FAU Stadium, where the Owls won 5-4. Right-hander Marc Stewart (0-0, 0.00 ERA in four appearances) will take the mound for FAU, while the Hurricanes will be starting right-hander Daniel Federman (1-1, 1.66 ERA).

Dusty May has accepted the challenge of building Florida Atlantic University’s men’s basketball program into a team that will consistently compete on the national stage. May has been named Florida Atlantic’s new head men’s basketball coach after signing a five-year contract today. He will be introduced at a press conference on Friday, March 23, at 11 a.m. in the Founders’ Lounge of the Tom Oxley Athletic Center, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. May joins FAU after three years as an assistant coach at the University of Florida, where he helped the Gators compile a 69-37 record, including backto-back NCAA Tournament appearances. The Gators reached the second round of this year’s tournament after advancing to the Elite Eight in 2017. As a full-time assistant, May’s teams have compiled a 274166 record (.623 winning percentage). May, who is FAU’s ninth head men’s basketball coach, has spent the last seven seasons on the coaching staffs of Florida coach Mike White, first at Louisiana Tech University for four seasons and then with the Gators. White is the older brother of Brian White, who was named FAU’s vice president and director of athletics on March 3. "Dusty was my number one choice, and I am thrilled to have him lead our men’s basketball program," said Brian White. "This hire is a clear demonstration of the ambition we have for our basketball program, our athletic department and our university. Dusty will bring tremendous passion, determination and work ethic to this position. The future of the FAU men’s basketball program is bright." May was retained as an assistant at Louisiana Tech when Mike White took over the program entering the 2011-

12 season, and the Bulldogs won three straight conference championships – the Western Athletic Conference title in 2013 and Conference USA crowns in 2014 and 2015. In their first season in Gainesville, the Gators rebounded from a sub-.500 record to finish 21-15 and advance to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament. "The opportunity to recruit in such a fertile region, the momentum this university is enjoying and the enormous potential here are ideal starting points," said May. "We will be winners here, and we will play with tremendous passion and energy. The vision of President John Kelly, the board of trustees and the athletic department under the leadership of Brian White made this move an easy decision. I can’t wait to get started." May served six seasons (200915) as assistant coach and associate head coach at Louisiana Tech. In his final season with the Bulldogs, the team went 27-9, including 15-3 in Conference USA to win the regular season championship by two games, and went 17-0 on its home court. Louisiana Tech won 49 of 50 home games from February 2012 through the end of the 2014-15 season. May was a student manager for the University of Indiana men’s basketball team and after graduating began his professional career as an administrative assistant/video coordinator at USC from 2000-02. He returned to Indiana in an administrative role for three seasons before taking his first step as an assistant coach with Eastern Michigan (2005-06). He has also served as an assistant at Murray State (2006-07) and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2007-09). May and his wife, Anna, have three sons, Jack, Charlie and Eli.
