COMMUNITY Jim Rooney Returns for 2019 Season

Boca Raton Football Club is proud to announce that Jim Rooney will return to the club for the 2019 Season.

“Bringing back Jim was our top priority this offseason,” said club president, Douglas Heizer. “We are excited to be able to keep Jim in his hometown club.”

Rooney led Boca Raton FC to a 10-10-2 record across all competitions in 2018, taking Boca Raton FC to their fourth straight APSL Semifinals and growing a young team from scratch to recreate a winning culture within the organization.

With only four players over the age of 25, Boca Raton FC was one of the youngest teams in both the NPSL and APSL last season, giving Rooney and his staff much room for growth as these young college stars mesh together in years to come.

“It’s great to be back for a second season,” said Rooney. “I’m excited to continue the work we began laying in the 2018 season and improve from it. Last year was a learning experience for a lot of these players and now that they had another year under their belt and I can ask more from them, and demand more as well.”

Coaching younger players is nothing new to Rooney, who was the assistant coach for the US Soccer U-17 Men’s National Team at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, where he coached a number of big-name players, including the 2017 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year, Christian Pulisic.

As a player, Rooney captained Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Miami Fusion from 1999 to 2001, leading the Fusion to the Supporters Shield crown in 2001 and the US Open Cup Final in 2000. Rooney was an MLS All-Star in 2001 and in total scored

21 times and notched 22 assists in an MLS career that spanned six seasons and playing for the MetroStars, Miami Fusion, and the New England Revolution.

“As a coach that played professional soccer, I look at a players point of view and see that training has to be the best part of their day,” explained Rooney. “At the same time, training must benefit both the players and the team. As a former pro, I look to create tactical drills that are also realistic to gameplay. We want our players to be aware of what to expect when that scenario presents itself in a game.”

“Having Jim lead the team in the 2019 Season is very important for us,” added Heizer. “A great foundation was laid in 2018 with a great core of players and we can’t wait to get 2019 started with this group of players. We are excited to continue to build a team that the fans and community can be proud of.”

“This season we are going to concentrate much more on getting the job done,” added Rooney. “We will play entertaining soccer, but we will also play with purpose and the design to win.”

“We are going to push our players this year as we look for better results,” continued Rooney. “Our most important job right now is to win every home game and give our fans quality soccer every time they come to The Shipyard and build it from there.”

The Beloved Boca Raton Green Market is Moving After 22 years at Royal Palm Place, the market will be making the move to the north City Hall parking lot beginning this Saturday, December 1.

“It was evident that the market has grown to such an extent that we had outgrown the location; it was especially noticeable this year with crowded parking,” explained Market Manager, Emily Lilly. “I discussed this with Mr. Batmasian and he had sincerely hoped we could continue there, but we both realized how we had created a serious parking problem at Royal Palm and a move was necessary. I personally can understand the feelings of many business owners in the Place both for or against a move.”

In 22 years at Royal Palm Place, there was always negative and positive feedback, most common, the question of whether the Market helped or hurt the shops at Royal Palm due to filling up parking.

“It’s always a toss-up as to whether we helped to drive customers to visit shops in Royal Palm or whether we interfered with regular Royal Palm stores’ customers by taking up so much space with market

customers,” added Lilly. “We loved being at Royal Palm and were grateful to Mr. Batmasian and the shops for allowing us to hold the market there for these past 22 years.

However, I can see both sides of the situation and the only solution to help eliminate the conflict was to move the market.”

Despite the move to City Hall, the Boca Raton Green Market will continue to open its doors from 8 am until 1 pm every Saturday with the same quality vendors residents are accustomed to.

“Our vendors have built a relationship with the public they serve and have regular loyal customers who will come to no matter where we are located,” explained Lilly.

“My hope is that anyone who may see the move as a negative will come to realize that change is always a possibility, and a fresh start for the market may be the best thing for everyone concerned at this time,” concluded Lilly. “We at the market are extremely grateful to the City and City staff for allowing the market to take place on their grounds.”

Robert Weinroth Sworn in as County Commissioner

Robert Weinroth was officially sworn into the District 4 seat on the Palm Beach County Commission.

The Democrat won the race by 8.5 percent against Republican challenger William Vale, who recently switched over from the Independent Party of Florida after it was dissolved. Vale was set to take on former Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie in the primaries, however, her suspension led her to withdraw from the race.

Weinroth took over for incumbent Steven Abrams, a Republican, however, the differences in parties did not change Abrams’ opinion on Weinroth and endorsed him for the seat. Republicans have held the District 4 seat since 1990, but Weinroth is not interested in handling his new position by looking at political parties.

“Much has been written about the fact that this seat has shifted from red to blue after 30 years,” he said. “However, I am hoping this will be the only time we ever allude to party affiliation during my term of office. This was a partisan race for what is in practicality a non-partisan body.”

In 2012, Weinroth’s first campaign fell short when he lost a race for Palm Beach County property appraiser. He was first elected to political office in 2014 during

a special election for the Boca Raton City Council and the next year he was elected to a full three-year term. He decided not to run for re-election and instead opted to run for the District 4 seat. He explained that his work on the Palm Beach County Commission will be similar, but on a much larger scale.

“Like the city council on which I served in Boca Raton, the seven of us will work in a collaborative fashion to address the many issues involved in running the largest county east of the Mississippi,” he said.

“It will require us to listen to each other and at times challenge one another to find solutions and strategies so that Palm Beach County continues to be the best place to live, work, learn and play.”

During his speech, Weinroth said that an issue he hopes they can address quickly is assisting the supervisor of elections, Susan Bucher, in preparation for the 2020 presidential elections.

“As a Constitutional officer of our county, she has a great deal of autonomy in the operations of her department,” he said. “However, it is clear we need to help support her efforts to update election equipment and procedures to eliminate much of the pain we endured during multiple recounts.”

FAU and Max Planck Launch First-of-its-Kind Academy

The brightest STEM high school students can now work side-by-side with preeminent scientists at one of the world’s leading neuroscience research institutions.

The Florida Atlantic University Max Planck Academy on the John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter stands to redefine approaches to STEM (science-technology-engineering and math) education, not just in South Florida, but nationwide.

“Based on historical educational reform efforts, the FAU Max Planck Academy will be the most consequential shift in the delivery of education in the United States in decades,” said Joel Herbst, Ed.D., superintendent of FAU PK-12 schools and educational programs.

“This is a significant pivot from the traditional model of delivering education. We are offering exceptional high school students an extraordinary opportunity to work alongside renowned scientists. As the only program of its kind in the world, the Academy will serve as the new model for STEM education delivery.”

The FAU Max Planck Academy is the latest partnership between FAU, the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI) and the Germany-based Max Planck Society, expanding on similar opportunities forFAU’s graduate and undergraduate students. This unprecedented program will open the laboratories of Max Planck to high school students, allowing them to participate in world-class research and scientific discoveries as part of their curriculum. Six high-achieving FAU High students currently are dual-enrolled in an Academy pilot program, directly learning from scientists – including Nobel Laureates – and spending time in MPFI labs. The students were selected based on the following criteria: National Merit Scholars, strong academic achievement as measured by a high-grade point average and an expressed interest in data science.

The Academy will be organized as a standalone extension of FAU High School– a nationally recognized, public “Blue Ribbon School” located on FAU’s Boca Raton campus that offers an accelerated pre-collegiate program where students work toward a cost-free bachelor’s degree and high school diploma simultaneously. The Academy in Jupiter will offer a unique and individualized program for students, starting in their junior year of high school. Enriched, honors academic pathways in STEM will be pursued, including neuroscience, biological sciences, chemistry, engineering and computer science. These students will ultimately gain priority admission into the undergraduate Max Planck Honors program which was launched last spring.

FAU Max Planck Academy students will assist MPFI researchers in a number of ways, such as engaging in laboratory research, organizing and analyzing big data using machine learning

and other advanced computational techniques, or assisting in MPFI’s state-of-the-art Scientific Core facilities, such as electron microscopy, molecular biology, and the Imaging Center.

Benefiting from the international presence of MPFI and the Max Planck Society, the Academy experience will lead to extraordinary international networking, mentorship, and study abroad opportunities.

“The Max Planck Society has a long history of investing in the education of the next generation of scientists. Our ideal has always been to provide the most promising minds with stateof-the-art resources and opportunities. We have proudly educated thousands of junior scientists at the college, Ph.D. and postdoctoral level, and are now excited to extend the Max Planck model of scientific excellence to the highschool level,” said David Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., CEO and scientific director of MPFI. Four years ago, FAU President John Kelly explored expanding the FAU High program to offer targeted educational tracks for specific disciplines.

“We explored how we could scale and replicate FAU High, as well as build specific pipelines to various disciplines for our best students,” said Kelly. “Just a few years later, FAU High has gone from 78 students to 570.

We’ve since launched the M.D. Direct pipeline, securing seats in our Schmidt College of Medicine for high school students interested in becoming physicians, and now we’re launching the FAU Max Planck Academy for the brightest STEM students. This new program could not have happened without the hard work of our superintendent Joel Herbst and his team, and a shared vision with the leadership at Max Planck.”

Approximately 35-50 students will be admitted in the inaugural class, eventually scaling up to about 50 students. Beginning in 2019, the highly selective application process will target National Merit semifinalists, as well as the best STEM students from around the world. The first class is slated to begin in fall 2020 and to graduate in spring 2022. Students who successfully complete this exceptional program will earn a high school diploma embossed with both the FAU and Max Planck seals, and at least two years of accelerated college credit – tuition free – leading to elite research experiences and distinction through the FAU Max Planck Honors program and accelerated bachelor’s degree at FAU. “This new STEM education model can be replicated with other elite research organizations to help them find new talent, which is needed as many studies point to a looming shortfall in STEM degrees verses STEM workforce needs,” said Herbst. “We believe the best evidence-based strategy to help combat the STEM employment gap is the early college, high school approach.”

Boca’s Steven Abrams steps down after 30 years in political arena Railroad fan will take over as director of Tri-Rail

The sixth-floor meeting room at the Palm Beach County Governmental Center in West Palm Beach was packed wall-towall on Nov. 20.

It was reorganization day for the county’s governing body. Some members were coming, some were going and others were just changing duties.

For District 4 County Commissioner Steven L. Abrams of Boca Raton, it was not just time to step down after nine and a half years on the county board, the day marked the finale of 30 years of public service. Those three decades also included five terms as a Boca Raton city council member, mayor of the city, past presidentof the Palm Beach County League of Cities, Planning and Zoning Board member and founding board member of the Florida League of Mayors.

As expected, his last address to his colleagues was rife with humor. He asked thateveryone offer their comments about him before he spoke. “I wanted to make sure it was unanimous so I wouldn’t have to ask for a recount.”

He told fellow commissioners he doesn’t want to give up the seat. “I didn’t quit. I didn’t get fired.” However, the term-limit law prevented him from running again.

He told the packed audience he had a bag of gifts for fellow commissioners.

“You won’t understand them; they are all inside jokes,” he said.

Jovial Abrams did offer some serious comments, saying his commission term “was a terrific nine and a half years.” He commended all his colleagues as well asCounty Administrator Verdenia Baker “for leading our staff ” and County Attorney Denise Nieman, “who is the best.”

He noted that both his predecessor, Mary McCarty, and his successor, RobertWeinroth, were in attendance at the meeting.

With a nod to his new job as executive director of the South Florida RegionalTransportation Authority, he said, “I hope to see you all on Tri-Rail.”

On Jan. 1, Abrams will succeed Jack Stephens, who is scheduled to retire on Dec.31 after leading SFRTA for more than four and a half years. The authorityoperates the 72-mile-long Tri-Rail commuter system.

Outgoing Palm Beach County Mayor Melissa McKinlay, who represents District 6, presented Abrams with a pair of socks “so that every day, when you walk to theTri-Rail train, you’ll think of me.”

District 5 Commissioner Mary Lou Berger, who represents western Boca, Delray and Boynton Beach, told Abrams: “I have enjoyed working with you, my partner in crime in the south. Your sense of humor has brightened up the board.”

Also on hand for Abrams’ departure was Wally Goose, the mascot of the Wawacon-

venience store/gas station chain based in Wawa, Pa., not far from Philadelphia where Abrams grew up. The outgoing commissioner has been one of the store’s most visible promoters.

While Abrams kept his smile during his goodbye, outgoing District 2 Commissioner Paulette Burdick became tearful at the end of her farewell. She is concluding 24 years of public service. By stepping down, she intends to retire, acquire a recreational vehicle and travel the country.

Burdick has been a county commissioner as well as a school board member.

“Saying goodbye is harder than I thought,” she said, fighting back tears. “I was born in 1951; I grew up in the 1960s, as many people in this room did. I am going to give up my tent and my Coleman stove for an RV. It will be hard to hang up this ‘uniform.’ I was honored and proud to be part of this organization.”

She concluded: “This has been a wild ride.”

Following the administration of the oath of office to new commissioners Gregg Weiss, District 2, and Robert Weinroth, District 4, and to reelected CommissionerMcKinlay in District 6, board members selected District 7 Commissioner MackBernard to serve as county commission mayor and District 3 Commissioner Dave Kerner to be vice mayor for the coming year.

Remember our Veterans Even at Thanksgiving Earlier this week, we paused to honor our veterans - men and women who served our country in the armed forces.

All around town, during special public events, we offered thanks to the nearly 21 million heroes of our nation for their sacrifices in defense of American liberty.

I had the honor of serving as master of ceremonies at the annual Veterans Day service at St. Paul Baptist Church in Delray Beach and later speaking at Mount Olive Baptist Church also in the same city.

It was such a fitting tribute to hear the award-winning Dimensional Harmony chorus from Boynton Beach Community High School as they performed stunningly on Sunday morning at St. Paul.

The group of about 35 students

has performed in the London International Choral Festival, at New York City’s Carnegie Hall as well as on NBC’s Today show after winning the Today show choir competition.

The highlight of the program was when veteran radio personality James “James T” Thomas from WHQT (Hot 105) radio, masterfully wove his life story into the theme to create a message that both the youth and the adults in the service could relate to.

In speaking with young people and even adults, around town, I find that so many of them have no idea why we observe Veterans Day. To some, it is a visible sign of respect to a relative or friend who served in the military. Some said it is a day when we honor our war dead. And to others, it is a day set aside to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in

our country’s service.

I think it is so important for Americans of all ages to understand the significance of the day.

It was 100 hundred years ago, on Nov. 11, 1918, at 11 a.m. - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - that the allies and Germany signed an armistice in France, ending the war to end all wars.

A year later and to some degree for more than three decades, Armistice Day was celebrated.

However, in 1954, after the second World War ended, the name was changed to Veteran’s Day to honor all veterans, living and dead.

Veteran’s Day should serve as a reminder to us that while appreciation and gratitude is always welcome, our veterans are often an underappreciated group in society.

Let us not forget the role that veterans have played in our lives: •The freedom of religion that we practice today, it is the veteran who gave it to us, not the preacher.

• It is the veteran who gave us the freedom of the press, not the reporter.

• It is not the poet but the veteran who gave us the freedom of speech.

•We have the right to a fair trial because of the veteran, not the lawyer.

• We have the right to vote because of the veteran, not the politician • It is the veteran who salutes the flag and served under the flag, who gave us the freedom to proudly wave our flags.

• And with Thanksgiving just a week away, it seems fitting that we continue to give our thanks to the men and women who are making and have made a difference in communities around our nation.

After Thanksgiving, What?

Our nation just celebrated its annual Thanksgiving holiday - the most American of all national festivities.

It’s indeed good to have one day per year, when each citizen is forced to reflect on the good received, instead of remembering only the distresses which also accompany us every year, throughout life!

Hopefully this year more people came to recognize that we are a truly blessed country, and individually we are never devoid of manifold reasons for gratitude.

No matter how bad and sad this year may have been, on account of varied, positive circumstances experienced, no one is ever without genuine reasons for gratitude.

And whatever deserved and received our thankfulness in the course of one spe-

cific day, needs to be extended in the days and months that follow. This needs to be so not only with the things for which gratitude has already been expressed, but also in anticipation of new, positive surprises which shall yet come, to gladden our lives.

Sadly, too many people have become self-sufficient to themselves, to the point that they imagine that all the good things that have come to them are exclusively due to their own efforts in seeking those things out, in securing on their own those blessings, with their money and through their own sweat and tears.

Although this may be true to a point, the decisive factor is the strength and the ability which came from God Himself, for the attainment of those things!

Therefore, our thanks are due, first of all, to Almighty God Who is the giver of every good and perfect gift. It is He Who grants us ideas, wisdom, physical strength, and all else that leads into the fulfillment of our dreams, and the palpable achievement of our goals.

Furthermore, God chooses not to work alone, but sends around some of His many human agents to encourage us, to aid us, and cooperate side by side with us in the performance of significant tasks which enrich our lives and contribute to our wellbeing and that of those who are dear to us.

Through my observation in the lives of others, and on account of my own personal experiences, I have come to learn that the more grateful one is, the more

such person opens the way for newer, better, and greater gifts which we can secure.

Also, the more we do for others, we also open routes for newercompensations that affect us tangibly not only for a moment, but for a much longer and significant period of our earthly journey!

Thus, in answering the question before us - After Thanksgiving, What? - the answer is simply, more thanksgiving, continual thanksgiving, joyful thanksgiving!

Greater perception of what daily comes our way, sincere sensibility to the surprises that the Creator continually dispenses even to those incapable of acknowledging Him for Who He is, and for all He does – these are the necessary ingredients that can open our eyes, hearts and minds to celebrate thanksgiving all the time!

I attended the Jr. League of Boca Raton’s Fashion Show Luncheon and Volunteer of the Year Awards at the Boca Raton Resort and Club. A very large group of women enjoyed some great fashions from Saks Fifth Ave. and many women were presented with awards.

The Untried But True Path To Failure Have you ever chosen not to attempt things because of fear you might fail?

Maybe it was assuming greater responsibility at work, trying to change careers, or even attempting to begin an ambitious selfimprovement program? I have to admit having been guilty of that several times.

This is ironic, because if we decide not try to do something, there is 100 percent certainty we will not accomplish it.

Not long ago I came across a quote from an unknown source that states, “Every accomplishment starts with a decision to try.” Sounds like a no-brainer, because it seems like common sense. But when we confront a challenge and determine it is not worth the effort - or the risk of failure – to attempt, we affirm this “sense” is not so common after all.

Most of us are familiar with the classic case of Thomas Edison, inventor of the incandescent light bulb, who had to make hundreds of attempts before he finally succeeded in producing an electrical light as he had imagined. Scanning the pages of history, we could find countless other examples. But my intent here is not to celebrate the successes of those to tried and persisted. Rather, it is to mourn all of those who have conceived great ideas, but failed because they were unwilling to try.

A Chinese philosopher named Mencius many centuries ago expressed it in other terms: “The difference between enthusiasm and indifference is filled with failures.”

My friend, Mike, comes to mind. Years ago he chose to leave a secure, well-compensated job to start a software consulting company from scratch. His “office” was in the basement of his house, his makeshift desk consisting of a door stretched across two file cabinets. He knew it was risky, having a small family and leaving the certainty of

a steady paycheck, along with corporate benefits such as health insurance.

As bills began to mount and he was briefly hospitalized with a serious illness, Mike was tempted to give up on his dream.

“What was I thinking?” he asked himself more than once. But he determined to continue pursuing his vision and found a much-needed client “just in the nick of time.” Over time he and a small staff built the business into a successful international company. Mike experienced the fulfillment of realizing his entrepreneurial vision; his faith also grew greatly through in the process.

If we have a vision - or a lifetime dream - but find our resolve to pursue it wavering, what should we do? The Scriptures give us some insight: Place your trust in the right place. Even the most talented and experienced people have times when their resolve is tested by adversity. However, if we believe God is leading to take a step of faith, not taking that step would be an act of disobedience.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Make God - and His will - your priority. Before making any major decision, first commit the matter to God in prayer, sincerely seeking His wisdom and direction. Once we are confident of how He is leading, we can be assured He is with us in what we are trying to do. “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun” (Psalm 37:4-5).

Volunteerism Is Alive And Well In Boca Raton

In mid-November, the Rotary Club of Downtown Boca Raton held its annual Mayors Ball at Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club. The well attended gala always brings out the biggest names in town. At every table you’ll spot someone you’ve seen or read about in the news during the last year.

The event honors our town’s mayors, past and present, with a silent auction, pre-dinner cocktail party, live big-ticketauction, spirited dancing to a red-hot band, an exquisite meal, fine wines and enough joviality to give New Year’s Eve a run for its money.

At the heart of this glittering evening is the real purpose of the gala: Raising funds to assist 20 local charities, each of which looks to the Rotary Club of Downtown Boca Raton to support various programs and services that help those in need.

For my own foundation, the American Disabilities Foundation, the Club has been an extraordinary partner helping us feed upwards of 6,000 attendees at our annual Boating & each Bash for People with Disabilities.

Looking around the beautifully decorated ball room this year I was struck with the fact that everyone there has at one time or another undoubtedly struggled with a myriad of issues as well, be they health related, financial, emotional or familial in nature. I’ve certainly had my share.

During galas such as this I always think of my friends and my own foundation’s board members and how many of them, luminaries in their own right, have shared with me their own struggles in life. One of them, Mark Hansen, a local realtor, author, public speaker and former member of the Palm Beach County School Board recently shared his story and has allowed me to now share it with you.

Mark grew up in Boca, in fact in the same Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club community where this year’s gala was held.

When he was only seven, Mark was struck by a car on Royal Palm Way, directly in front of his house as he raced home for dinner. For eight days he lay in a coma at Boca Raton Community Hospital, now known as Boca Raton Regional Hospital.

When he awoke from his coma, he was paralyzed on one side of his body and unable to speak.

He spent the next two months in the hospital. Seizures plagued him for nine years afterwards, along with a grim prognosis

from his team of doctors. Because of the severity of his head injuries the medical staff told Mark’s parents that their son’s capacity to lead a full and productive life would be greatly diminished. The doctors warned that Mark would struggle in school, that it would be unlikely he’d ever be able to drive a car or even play at sports.

Attending college would certainly be out of the question. It was their way of preparing Mark’s mother and father for what they felt would be an inevitable life of minimal expectations.

But miracles do happen. With the love and support of his family and his own sheer determination, Mark Hansen overcame every obstacle that challenged him along the way. He went on to graduate from college, launching a very successful career in real estate and eventually writing several books for young people about teen finance and managing money. His love of education led him to eventually seek public office when he ran for and won a place on the pinnacle of education in South Florida as a member of the very prestigious Palm Beach County School Board.

Mark says that, “Being a member of the American Disabilities Foundation and being able to participate in the Bash each year is a way for me to give back and help others in their own journey and with their own challenges.” We are ever grateful to have this beacon of hope on our team.

Living Christmas Tree to hold 30th and final show

A beloved Christmas tradition that has been a part of the Glades community for three decades is ending on a high note this year.

On Dec. 2, Palm Beach State College’s Belle Glade campus and the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center will present the 30th and final production of its Living Christmas Tree performance.

The event, titled “A Holiday to Remember: 30 Years of Favorites,” will feature more than 100 children and adult vol-

unteer choir members from the Glades community who will sing popular selections from the past three decades such as “Holiday Rock,” “Light Up the Tree” and “Let it Snow.” It takes place at 3 p.m. in the Dolly Hand. Tickets are $5.

Leigh Woodham, director of the Dolly Hand Center, says that the show was a sellout for more than 20 years until the economic downturn. She sang in the choir for the past 27 years and says it was truly a pleasure to watch it grow.

“When we first began, the set was very basic with a rugged tree structure that held only a few choir members with some risers on the stage for the rest of the choir,” said Woodham. “Over the years, the tree evolved into a beautiful engineerdesigned structure that held the entire choir and then into a charming village set.”

She says putting on the program each year requires a lot of effort and there aren’t enough volunteers to keep it going

as the choir director, accompanist and many of the singers are retiring. The show also lost its children’s choir director, Becky Watson, a former music teacher who led the children for 27 years. Watson passed away last year.

Director Carol Schmidt, a retired music teacher, has led the adult choir for almost 30 years. She is also the director for the Young Singers of the Palm Beaches’ Choir in the Glades, who will be joining the program for this final performance.

Schmidt will be joined by accompanist Karen Corbin-Wheeler, who has also been with the program for almost 30 years.

Schmidt will also be joined by her daughter, Monica, who began signing in the choir when she was in her teens, and granddaughter, Ashlyn, who has sung with the group since fifth grade.

“This event has not only become a great tradition for me and my family but has been personally rewarding too,” she says.

“Many students who I taught music to in public school ended up joining the choir and staying into adulthood. We all forged these wonderful relationships and grew up together.”

Schmidt says the show’s final performance will be bittersweet. “We all want to go out on top, and we will do just that,” she says.

FAU Partners with Miami Dade College for Link Transfer Success Program

Florida Atlantic University and Miami Dade College (MDC) recently announced a new partnership to establish the LINK Transfer Success Program. This program is a collaborative effort to facilitate the admission and smooth transition of students from an MDC associate degree to an FAU baccalaureate degree.

“We are excited to formalize this partnership with Miami Dade College, the largest institution of higher education in the Florida,” said Jessica Acevedo-Lopez, director for new student recruitment and LINK Program.

The program will serve students who are currently enrolled in MDC and plan to complete their associate degree within three years or six consecutive semesters

(excluding summers).

“Through the FAU LINK program, Miami Dade College students planning on transferring to FAU will receive their FAU student ID which opens the door to FAU events, academic advising and exclusive scholarships,” said Acevedo-Lopez. “FAU’s campuses in Broward county and online programs expand access to academic opportunities for MDC students.”

The FAU LINK Transfer Success Program was established in 2009 to reinforce the University’s commitment to state colleges and transfer students. MDC joins FAU’s other LINK partners, including Palm Beach State College, Broward College and Indian River State College.

SPORTS Two FAU Women’s Soccer Stars Voted All-Region

On the heels of a historic 2018 season, two more honors have come in for Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer, with Ebba Blomqvist and Mary O’Hara earning All-South Region recognition from United Soccer Coaches.

Blomqvist wrapped her two-year FAU career with her second All-Region nod in as many years, graduating from last year’s Second Team credit to First Team balloting this year. O’Hara, a rising senior, adds to her conference award résumé with her first regional showing, as she has been named a Third team member by the organization.

In each of the last four years, the Owls have won at least 11 matches, making the Conference USA Championship every season, and advancing to at least the

semifinal round each of the last three years. Further, in all four seasons, the team has had at least two representatives on the All-Region annals.

Starting in 2015, Owls earning region honors were Claire Emslie (Second Team) and Erica Burt (Third Team). Burt repeated by becoming a Second Team member in 2016, and was joined by First Teamer Sydney Drinkwater, as well as Sammy Rowland on the Third Team. A year ago, Blomqvist was named Second Team and Asta Arnadottir Third Team.

This year’s duo makes for four seasons in a row with multiple region representatives, and all told now, there have been 19 All-Region honorees in FAU women’s soccer program history.

Sailfish Drop SSC Opener to Fighting Knights The Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball team dropped a rough one tonight in Boca Raton. The Sailfish got down early and could never recover as they dropped the Sunshine State Conference opener to Lynn, 86-70.

The game started with Lynn jumping out to an early lead knocking down two early threes during a 7-0 run for the Fighting Knights which included three turnovers from the ‘Fish. Andrew Moemeka and Malek Barber both had four points apiece with 10:54 remaining and the Sailfish down 21-10. Zac Neely was able to connect on a three to put the Sailfish within eight at the 10 minute mark. Two free ones from Jules Jasmin put the Sailfish within five 2318 and a little under nine minutes before halftime. The Knights and the Sailfish went back and forth for a little before Caleb Edwards was able to throw down a put back slam to put the score at 35-27 in favor of Lynn with 3:57 remaining. Neither team was scoring much after that as PBA went into a three minute field goal drought. The half finished 40-31 in favor of the Knights.

The second half started with the Knights stretching their lead up to 15 before Moemeka was able to throw down a big dunk followed by a free throw to bring the ‘Fish within 12. Lynn continued to hit threes causing them to extend their lead to

up to 19 points at 59-40. Jasmin was able to grind out a few tough points to bring it back 61-47. Lynn went on to push the lead back out to 23 with the help of Michale Baez who shot 4-10 from beyond the arch.

The Sailfish again went on a four minute field goal drought allowing the Fighting Knights to keep their large lead. At the 5:54 remaining mark the Knights maintained a 78-56 lead. From there both teams went cold, Lynn going 0-6 from the field and PBA going 0-9. Freshman Nick Nolte was able to end the field goal rut with an easy lay-up to put the score at 82-64 with 1:37 to go. The Knights were able to hold on for the 16 point advantage win.

The Sailfish shined from the charity stripe going to the line 39 times and making 30 of those attempts which allowed them to stay in the game. Overall PBA was 19-47 from the field with Jasmin leading the way with 18 points on 4-8 shooting.

De’Ondre Jackson was right behind him with 13 points of his own. The freshman Nolte was also able to notch his first collegiate points tonight finishing with four.

Moemeka grabbed five rebounds tonight before fouling out and put up eight points as well. Jasmin also pulled down five boards.

The Sailfish will return home to the Rubin Arena Saturday Dec. 1 to host Saint Leo with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
