COMMUNITY PBSC Receives $2 Million to Expand Boca Beach Chabad Announces The Women of Valor Brunch Engineering Training
Palm Beach State College is launching a new Center for Excellence in Engineering Technology at the Belle Glade and Palm Beach Gardens campuses with a more than $2 million award from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund. Slated to open in August, the Center will allow the College to expand its engineering program offerings and provide a more collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to boosting the number of highly trained, middle-skill workers to meet the needs of the aviation/aerospace, manufacturing, clean tech and homeland security/ defense industries. “We are honored and excited to be one of the 2018-2019 Florida Job Growth Grant recipients,’’ said Ava L. Parker, J.D., PBSC president. “The grant will allow us to enhance and grow our engineering training programs and provide additional career paths for students.” PBSC’s $2,060,919 grant is part of $9 million in awards that former Gov. Rick Scott announced before concluding his second term. He and the Florida Legislature created the fund in 2017, providing $85 million for improving public infrastructure and enhancing workforce training in the state. The Jobs Growth Grant Fund was approved again by the Legislature for $85 million for the 2018-19 fiscal year. The most recent awards reflect a total of more than $151 million in funding awarded to 50 communities across the state, including more than $42 million in 16 rural communities. The College will offer a new fourth concentration in Advanced Manufacturing for the Engineering Technology Associate
in Science degree and launch three additional College Credit Certificates in Industrial Technician, Automation and Lean Manufacturing, bringing the total to five. The College also will hire five employees, including a director of the Center and two faculty members, and strengthen its partnerships with Florida Atlantic University and 15 local companies to ensure students are highly prepared for the workforce and have the skills they need to transition into bachelor’s programs. The College anticipates enrolling 500 students in the College Credit Certificates in the first year and 2,000 by 2023. “The Center for Engineering Technology will allow us to further our commitment to provide a solid pipeline of workers for our local industries,’’ said Dr. Jean Wihbey, PBSC’s vice president of workforce development. “It will position us as a leader in engineering training and help grow the local and state economy.” College faculty and staff immediately will begin finalizing program curricula and other plans for the Center. “This is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity, so I’m excited to participate in growing the Center for Excellence in Engineering Technology,” said Professor Eva Suarez, department chair for Engineering Technology whose background includes 17 years as a mechanical engineer at Pratt Whitney. “We want to be top of mind for all of the high school students, parents, advisors and teachers when it comes to any kind of engineering education,” added Professor Oleg Andric, chair of the Electrical Power Technology program who helped craft the grant proposal.

Redcon1 Accelerates Growth Plan by Joining Forces with Sports, Military, and Distribution
REDCON1 continues their meteoric expansion through a new partnership with outdoors and sports giant, Academy Sports, a retailer with 290 locations in 16 states. REDCON1 further cemented its military presence, and is now offered on Army and Airforce base exchanges worldwide. These channel expansions, along with a Europa Sports partnership for distribution of REDCON1’s “on-thego” products to gyms and grocery stores nationwide, leaves no doubt when they claim to be the “fastest growing sports supplement company in history.” Academy Sports + Outdoors is among the biggest sporting goods chains in the world. At a time when traditional retail stores are disappearing, Academy is breaking ground on new locations. In 2017 the company reported $4.8 billion in revenue, an increase from the previous year. They have continued adding to their sports supplement selection, and now have a dedicated space featuring top supplement brands. REDCON1 is one of the youngest brands included on their shelves, which are exclusively top-tier. Soldiers and Airmen are passionate about physical fitness, and that passion extends to sports supplements. A growing portion of AAFES (Army and Air Force Exchange Service) revenue is from sports supplements, energy drinks, and protein bars. Aaron Singerman, CEO of REDCON1, stated, “From the inception of REDCON1, one of our goals was to
www.bocaratontribune.com
be available for servicemen and women. We have always offered big discounts to active and former military personnel, but the ultimate goal was to be sold on base.” REDCON1 employs many veterans, and through the ever-growing Tier Operator Program hundreds of their ambassadors boast a military background. This past year, REDCON1 has introduced 8 new products and dozens of new flavor expansions. Two of those new products, TOTAL WAR RTD (Ready-todrink) and the customer-favorite MRE Bar, are both now being distributed by Europa Sports. Since REDCON1 was formed in 2016, the brand has been unorthodox in its direct model. All wholesale accounts are managed and shipped to from the REDCON1 headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida. The decision to have Europa Sports distribute the MRE Bars and TOTAL WAR RTDs wasn’t an easy one, but was done based on Europa’s tremendous relationships with gyms and grocery store chains nationwide. “We have big goals for REDCON1 and to achieve those goals we need a strong partner like Europa Sports to help us get our products in places we might not get in otherwise,” said REDCON1 CEO Aaron Singerman. 2018 was a banner year for REDCON1, who have seen revenue grow an average of 300% year over year, and are expecting the trend to continue in 2019 and beyond.

A Sweet, Bitter Start to the New Year A new year is upon us and once again, just like clockwork, we found ourselves doing a variety of things to usher it in. Like many of my friends who were at concerts or parties, I kicked off my new year on a high note at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Boynton Beach where the incomparable gospel music legend Evangelist Barbara Norwood was in concert. This was not your traditional Watch Night service in the black church in America where five minutes before midnight, men, women and children knelt, held hands and prayed to God from the present year into the New Year. Instead, the Rev. Jovan T. Davis had his congregation to link up with their families. For those whose families were not present, he invited them to huddle with him then he prayed. At one point in his message, Davis paused, almost like an intermission, brought Norwood to the stage and she led the congregation in one of her numbers. Adding to the mix was the church’s choir, which primed the audience for Norwood and Davis’ message.
Even at 83, Norwood, dubbed the “World’s Greatest Storyteller” is still making a strong impression. The veteran singer swung rhythms as exuberantly as any jazz singer might on “Shake the Devil Off ” and spun intricate embellishments on her classic, “Victory Is Mine”, which is arguably one of the greatest congregational hymns of all time. Though frail, she sang those songs with such great, passionate gospel fervor; I am convinced that she is by far one of the great gospel luminaries who can just bring a song to life. Later that day, I attended the 39th Annual Emancipation Proclamation Service at Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Delray Beach where the Rev. Dr. Gilbert Stewart did an astounding job teaching the attendees about the significance of the day. The late Rev. Randolph M. Lee of St. John Missionary Baptist Church and the late Rev. Matthew Mitchell of Christ Missionary Baptist Church started the tradition to recognize the anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation 155 years
ago, which helped free approximately 3.5 million slaves during the Civil War. Rev. Stewart, of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in West Palm Beach, centered much of his presentation on drawing parallels between what he said it was like to be oppressed and in captivity during slavery and now. He told his flock that the people today, especially the youths, are perishing from lack of knowledge. The Youth Ministry did some remarkable dramatizations to convey the story of what happened on Jan. 1, 1863. I applaud Bishop Albert Moore and Linda Mitchell Moore of Delray Community Missionary Baptist Church for continuing the legacy. Like Mitchell Moore, a longtime educator and daughter of Rev. Mitchell, I understand the need for the service. There are many older residents as well as young people in our community who do not know about the Emancipation Proclamation and its significance. So, it is important that we keep that celebration going so our children and their children's children can understand and appreciate the Emancipation
Proclamation. I end this column with a sad note on the passing of pioneer tv news anchor and host AnEta Sewell-Spence. I met AnEta back in the late 1980s when I was a reporter for one of the local dailies. We both were members of the Palm Beach Association of Black Journalists and she was very encouraging to me. Whenever I saw her, even long after she had left the business, AnEta was always genuinely interested in how I was doing. Many today may not remember her, but she was an icon in the Palm Beach/Treasure Coast market for several years. Let’s face it, she was the first black TV news anchor around here, and as such, she inspired many. When she was on the air, AnEta informed today’s citizens as well as inspired a lot of tomorrow’s journalists in the area. She was an especially powerful role model for young women and girls who admired her integrity, her tenacity and her intellect, not to mention those whom she blazed a trail for. May her soul rest in peace.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Let Joy Characterize Your Days! One of the greatest curses affecting contemporary society is boredom. In spite of new technologies intended to simplify life, and gadgets which can literally bring the entire world to anyone by a touch from the fingertips, and so much more, several people still complain about being bored. Even youth, stemming from the financial upper crust of society, often go into shoplifting and committing more serious crimes, “just for the thrill of it” as several of them have personally testified. Sadly, there are also mature citizens
who do not know what to do meaningfully with their free moments. They may fulfil their weekly “obligations” for earning a living, going to church, and socializing with family, friends, and neighbors. Yet, there is exactly where their excitement also ends, even if they could also enjoy good literature, besides engaging in a few other random, meaningful activities. After all, people are so wired that each new day can be lived with a sense of excitement and the experience of true joy. Whether residing singly or in families,
each citizen of earth may ascertain in advance the preferred ways of planning each day with sufficient time for personal growth and for meaningful service directed toward others. It is only when one thinks of somebody else more than one’s self that varied new opportunities often emerge to impact one’s neighbour positively, even through relatively simple acts of good will and kindness. If you truly desire to make each new day meaningfully busy and exciting, start thinking of others and of what you can do for them. It may be sending
a letter or a note to cheer someone up, offering to take an elderly person to an appointment, making some phone calls to shut-ins, or those in convalescence, being an ever-present friend to many. Humans are daily surrounded with manifold opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of countless persons. Ultimately, there is no greater joy than to contribute to mending lives, and providing healing to specific individuals who need it! When this attitude prevails in your heart, I can guarantee that much joy shall characterize your days!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Not Providing Principles We Cannot Implement
Black Hat Holiday Party at Novello
The Boca Black Hat Diva’s enjoyed a fun holiday party at Novello where they feasted on Branzino fish or Chicken Francaise or Pasta dishes. The Diva’s welcomed three new members to the group.
Recently I had the opportunity to spend time with Albert, a longtime friend who served as a leader in CBMC for many years. He was guest speaker at a retreat, and discussed about some of the things he has learned about applying biblical principles in his businesses, as well as his personal life. One of the life-changing insights Albert said experience has taught him is, “God will never give you a principle in His Word that you cannot implement.” He added, “When you follow biblical principles, you can never go wrong.” This was not an empty declaration. My friend proceeded to cite example after example of times when, even if it seemed counter-intuitive, he chose to follow guidelines from the Scriptures and discovered to his delight that they worked as promised. Albert was not saying that heeding biblical principles is always easy, or that outcomes will always be as we hoped. But as he commented, “A loving father will never ask you to do something that is not good for you – and the Lord is our loving Father.” This started me thinking: What are
www.bocaratontribune.com
some of these principles from the Bible that God gives, assuring us He has established them with our best interests at heart? Books could be written about this topic, but here are some examples that came to mind: We do not work just for ourselves. We start our careers typically thinking in terms of “my work,” “my job.” The Bible teaches, however, the work we perform is part of our divine calling, and the talents and giftedness we possess, and even opportunities that come our way, are from God. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). There is no harm in having to wait. Many of us are action-oriented people, and having to wait for goals and desires to be realized tests our patience to the limit. But if we find ourselves having to wait, God has a good reason for it. “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him” (Psalm 37:7). “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

Inspired by her fourth-grade teacher, Breanna Carter ’18 of Springboro, Ohio, prepared herself to become the teacher she aspired to be. “She made learning easy and fun, which caused me to want to do the same,” recalled Carter, the outstanding graduate of the School of Education and Behavioral Studies, who traveled to Australia’s Gold Coast last fall to complete her dream semester as an intern at an all-boys private school. Between what she learned at PBA and her teach abroad experience, she is now ready to give back as a role model, especially to those children who need a positive influence in their lives. Before going to Australia, Carter had an opportunity to do a 15-week internship at a Title 1 school, a low-income school, in Palm Beach County. And that’s where she found her passion for teaching students who desperately needed encouragement. Some of them, she observed, were more difficult to work with than others, but that’s because, she realized, many of them had not had a lot of constructive guidance
in their lives. During the time that she was there, Carter took it upon herself to be a positive light in their lives and now hopes to start her teaching career at that school. Carter has always liked school. She grew up going to a large public school and wanted a change. So, it was not surprised when she chose PBA for her undergraduate studies. “I wanted to go to a smaller school,” she said. “I loved the fact that PBA is 17 hours away from my home but I still felt surrounded by a strong community while I was there. “I normally had eight to 10 other students in my classes so I was able to get to know my peers and professors more than I ever would have at a larger school. I could go to my professors for help and would be confident that they would take the time to do all they could for me and encourage me through each process.” Her time at PBA made a huge impact in her Christian walk as well. Throughout these past few years, she saw God pushing her out of her comfort zone, encouraging her and equipping her with many tools she confesses she’ll continue to use in the future. “Some of those were skills I learned from my professors, whose life stories and experiences in the educational field were good lessons I’ll be happy to apply to my career as an educator.”

The Florida Atlantic University men’s swimming and diving team has swept the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Men’s Swimmer and Diver of the Week awards for the second consecutive week, as announced by the league on Tuesday. Junior Connor Smoak captured his first Men’s Swimmer of the Week title and sophomore Logan Downeytallied his fifth Men’s Diver of the Week award this season. FAU swimming and diving hosted NYU and conference foes NJIT in a tri-meet last Saturday. Smoak and Downey were two of the top performers for the Owl men. Smoak was the most decorated swimmer from the meet, walking away with four
first-place finishes. The Melbourne, Florida native took his first win of the season in the 50-yard freestyle (21.64) and his 100-yard freestyle victory (47.39) was his second top finish in the event on the year. Smoak’s strong swims as the anchor in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays helped secure the first-place spot for both of his relay teams. Downey continued to show dominance on the springboards, securing his fifth sweep of the season in the 1- and 3-meter diving events. On the 3-meter, Downey’s score of 252.45 led him to the top of the leaderboard for the event by nearly 65 points. The Plantation, Florida native’s score of 207.75 on the 1-meter took the edge over the NJIT divers, as he scored 16 points higher than the second-place finisher. FAU swimming and diving will head to Tallahassee to square off against Florida State on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. For complete coverage from the meet and other FAU swimming and diving news, follow along on Twitter (@FAUSwimDive), Instagram (@FAUSwimDive) and Facebook.
