Bank of America’s Brumley is Business Leader of the Year
Florida Atlantic University’s College of Business hosted the 27th annual Business Leader of the Year breakfast recently at the Boca Raton Resort & Club to celebrate the accomplishments of Fabiola “Fab” Brumley, Bank of America’smarket president in Palm Beach County. Brumley, who earned her MBA and bachelor’s degree in accounting from FAU, serves as Bank of America’s enterprise leader in Palm Beach County, working across the region to connect Bank of America’s business lines to deliver integrated financial services to individuals, families and businesses. She also thanked friends and colleagues who travelled to join her at the event, as well as several family members, many who also earned degrees from FAU. In closing, Brumley shared some words of wisdom with the students in attendance. “FAU gave me the power to choose for whom and with whom I work,” Brumley said. “I chose a company that shares my values. A company that serves its customers. A company that invests in creative thinking by innovating. A company that believes in governance with social consciousness. And a company that believes

that we can do more together than alone. Someday when I look back on my life those are values that are worth my time. How will you invest your time and what would you like the power to do? Together in this room and beyond we give FAU the power to grow better people, better citizens and better leaders. Thank you for listening and for this incredible honor.” A portion of the money raised from the Business Leader of the Year event will provide scholarships to students enrolled in the College of Business at FAU. The City of Boca Raton Seeks to Curb the Number of Garage Sales with New Ordinance
By: Robert S Weinroth
The City of Boca Raton has announced new rules intiated to control the time and number of garage sales a resident can hold each year. The new regulations were promulgated to curb, what some within our community felt were intrusive activities by neighbors hold frequent garbage sales, disrupting the fabric of their communities. The following information has been provided by the City to help residents comply with the new rules. Bargain hunters don’t despair, garage sales will still be happening in a neighborhood near you, but only between 8AM – 5PM. The Boca Raton City Council recently passed Ordinance 5470: Garage Sale Permitting & Regulations. This new law regulates garage sales in neighborhoods within City limits. Resi-

dents must obtain a free permit prior to having a garage sale. The permit limits the hours of the sale and the number of sales a resident can have in a calendar year. These new rules will help ensure that frequent garage sales at the same location don’t become disruptive in a neighborhood. The ordinance was proposed by City staff and unanimously passed on October 10, 2018. Instead of heading into City Hall to fill out a permit, residents can simply fill out a garage sale permit application ONLINE and receive their approved permit by email. Applications will typically be approved by Code Enforcement within 24 hours, Monday – Friday. Once the application is approved, homeowners must comply with the garage sale permitting regulations that can be found on the City’s website.

Donald & Elaine Singer Donate Frank Lloyd Wright Collection
Florida Atlantic University’s School of Architecture in the College for Design and Social Inquiry was recently gifted a Frank Lloyd Wright collection of artwork, books and other collectibles – totaling 189 items – by Donald and Elaine Singer. “My wife and I donated our collection to enhance the research and teaching of architecture at Florida Atlantic University,” said Singer. “Our hope is that it enriches the lives of generations of students and faculty to come.” Wright was a renowned American architect, interior designer, writer and educator who designed more than 1,100 iconic
buildings throughout the United States. “The Donald and Elaine Singer Collection will be so impactful for the students and faculty in the School of Architecture,” said Wesley Hawkins, Ph.D., dean of the College for Design and Social Inquiry. “We are honored that the Singers have gifted us such a special collection.” The Donald and Elaine Singer Collection will be housed at FAU’s Fort Lauderdale campus and is available for viewing in the resource room for students and faculty. A portion of the books will be housed in the FAU Libraries’ Rare Books Collection, which will be accessible to FAU’s faculty.
FAU and Coral Springs Fire Department Team Up For Trauma Day
Florida Atlantic University’s Schmidt College of Medicine and Juan Cordona, chief of the EMS Division of the Coral Springs Fire Department, recently teamed up for “Trauma Day” at FAU Tech Runway®. The highlight of the event was a mock crisis and rescue scenario. Fifty Medical Academy students from Boynton Beach Community High School, Park Vista Community High School and Forest Hill Community High School learned about triage management, EMS equipment and management, clinical skills regarding the care of trauma victims, and techniques to arrest life-threatening bleeding. The mock crisis and rescue scenario was enacted by Cordona and medical students in FAU’s College of Medicine. The scenario involved a 22-year-old man who
was drinking and car surfing and fell on the pavement, sustaining multiple injuries. The high school students observed the trauma scenario and learned about the consequences of drinking and driving and making poor decisions. The trauma team treated the life-threatening injuries and stabilized, immobilized and prepared the patient for transport by ground to the closest trauma center. Trauma Day is a program offered as part of FAU’s medical school’s Healthcare Careers Outreach Program (HCOP) through the Office for Diversity and Inclusion. HCOP provides underserved middle and high school students who aspire to become physicians or other health-related professionals with hands-on activities and programs to help them reach their goals.
Orange theory Fitness Reaches Sales Milestone
Just eight years after opening its first studio in 2010, Orangetheory Fitness crossed a threshold few companies ever manage to reach: exceeding $1 billion in systemwide revenues for 2018. The leader in heart-rate interval training and one of the world’s fastest-growing fitness franchise brands reached the billiondollar mark in systemwide sales in 2018, thanks to a loyal and growing member base and continued rapid studio expansion. As of today, Orangetheory Fitness operates more than 1,100 studios in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Poland, New Zealand, Germany, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Israel, Peru and Chile, among others. The company has another 500+ studios in its development pipeline. Orangetheory Fitness co-founder Ellen Latham, who designed the company’s wellknown interval training fitness regimen, cited the company’s dedicated and supportive employees, franchisees and – especially – its loyal members for its monumental growth. “We opened our first studio in 2010 with one purpose in mind – to blaze our own trail with a workout that would help people live a longer, more vibrant life,” she said. “I’m so grateful that our members have embraced that approach, which is designed to bring the heart-rate into those key zones that allow members to push themselves harder and reach new goals in the studio.” Dave Long, Orangetheory Fitness co-founder and CEO, said: “By taking heart-rate interval training to a new level
www.bocaratontribune.com
of performance, we have been able to take our business to new heights as well. As our growth rate continues to skyrocket, we believe we will reach our aggressive goal of operating 2,500 studios – serving 2.5 million members, worldwide – within the next 5 years.” The key to the remarkable growth of Orangetheory Fitness is that the company’s unique trifecta of science, coaching and technology combine to generate more energy, more drive and more health for its members. Each Orangetheory class, taught by highly-trained coaches, is an hour-long, science-backed, technology-tracked, fullbody workout that helps members elevate their heart rate to the “Orange Zone,” which is 84-91 percent of their maximum heart rate. Each Orangetheory studio has treadmills, water rowing machines, mini bands and TRX® suspension unit systems and plenty of free weights and benches. Coaches conduct personalized group sessions designed for 24 participants at a time, an approach complemented by technology advancements. Through its game-changing technology, Orangetheory advances its mission by giving members even better tools to capture performance data, measure their overall workout results and set new goals. And this popular model has proven to be extremely effective. The average Orangetheory Fitness studio now hosts more than 5,000 workouts per month. This has propelled the company to #25 on the 2019 Franchise 500 list from Entrepreneur magazine.

The Shutdown is About More Than a Wall While visiting a local church recently, I was dumbfounded when the pastor opined on the reason behind the government shutdown, which impacted several of his parishioners. “Regardless of what you may think, this shutdown is about fear,” he told the flock of about 1,500. “Fear that one day, our grandkids will no longer look like us…. Fear of the browning of America.” Bells began ringing in my head. Among the lessons I learned early in the U.S. Navy was to take care of your people because they are your most important asset. “You should always be the last to eat and get paid,” one of my mentors advised me. “Always make sure your people get their paychecks and eat first. You eat after everyone.” For nearly 30 years I tried to practice that sage advice, which I credit to me being the leader I am today. For 35 days, more than 800,000 federal employees’ lives were interrupted. Some were forced to work without getting a paycheck while others had to stay home. Some had to go to food banks, some resorted to part-time jobs and others
solicited donations through crowdsourcing websites to help pay their bills. Yet, their boss – those who make up the government - did not miss a meal. Was that a case of 800,000 loyal workers who had a bad boss? News commentaries would have us to think it was over funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. If my memory recalls, it was U.S. officials who once cautioned that it is the Canadian border, not the one at Mexico, which represents a bigger security risk. What good will a wall do? If it’s a national security, then more sophisticated criminals are coming in the north and through traditional means. The proposed border wall is not necessary. The number of people apprehended while crossing the southern border significantly declined by 76 percent in 2018 since its peak in 2000, according to FactCheck. org, a project of the nonprofit Annenburg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania. The nonpartisan group, which examines statements by politicians and others for accuracy and fairness, says it “aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in
U.S. politics.” Nearly all of the illegal drugs our president says his new wall would stop from entering the country actually come through legal points of entry. And there is already a wall or fence along roughly 700 miles of the 2,000-mile border between the U.S. and Mexico. Let it be known that if the wall is to be built, the brown people on the other side probably would have to build it. Whether the wall is in the south or north, I concur with the late Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. that border walls symbolize the divisions of men on the face of the earth. “Here on either side of the wall are God’s children and no man-made barrier can obliterate that fact,” Rev. King said on Sept. 13,1964, three years after the Germans built a heavily fortified wall around West Berlin. The West Germans had invited him to speak at an event to honor former President John F. Kennedy, who had been shot and killed less than a year earlier. He also accepted an invitation to speak in East Berlin, which gave the U.S. State Department license to confiscate his
passport. He however flashed his American Express card to the guard and passed the checkpoint. In retrospect, I am convinced that pastor was right on. We may not like talking about it but sometimes a man must stand up and say it like it is. The core of our politics is that America’s minorities are quickly becoming the majority, and the population shift is happening quickly. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 2013 was the first year that most infants under the age of 1 in this country were nonwhite. Such staggering statistics explain why some people will sell their babies to back up our president’s call to make America great again. The daily news reports bear proof where we see children being snatched from their parents and herded to a camp. As the pastor said, there is so much fear of becoming the minority and losing their power. There’s also the perception they’ll be treated like how they once treated minorities. This is a wakeup call. The wall is about power.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
How Punctual Are You? Punctuality is not a value limited to past ages, nor to certain unique situations. What used to occur with greater frequency and seriousness in the past, remains a human attitude which is still paramount in human relations and a person’s individual behavior. Although it was more common in the past, especially in the western world, it has also failed many tests among cultures where that was never viewed as a priority in life. For some people, or entire nations, being on time for anything is totally irrelevant; people choose on their own when they arrive for a meeting scheduled for a specific time-frame. Among certain cultures, if you plan a
dinner, a wedding, or some other more formal occurrence, and announce the hour to begin, the invitees make every effort to arrive one hour later and, sometimes, even that turns out to be a bit too early. I once heard a hilarious definition of punctuality, given by someone born in a nation where such a thing is non-existent, and faithfully observed. That definition suggested that punctuality occurs when two people arrive with the same lateness! This is similar to what someone, perhaps jokingly, is supposed to have stated: “I once decided to become a procrastinator, but never got around to doing it.” Sadly, far too many have done it and
several others are notorious for acting that way in all their affairs! Yet, the call for action needs to be heeded with a greater sense of urgency. Whatever needs to be done turns out to be more effective when accomplished with dispatch. There’s no need for things to accumulate and later confuse the doer regarding where he or she should start; what activity should deserve priority, in the midst of so much still left undone? Surveys have reported that persons are much happier when they observe every task before them with seriousness and punctuality; the sooner a responsibility is met, the more shall one have in which to enjoy greater freedom, or move into
additional delights within their reach! Contrary-wise, those who are too casual about their use of time, especially of what’s already designated for specific functions, will inevitably suffer unpleasant consequences. So, don’t wait till the last minute when you already know what is expected of you; instead, apportion your time realistically and well, being always on time for invitations received, commitments made, meetings previously scheduled, regardless of the nature of the event. You’ll be surprised at how much extra time you shall remain, available for other valuable experiences you can also have!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Importance of Perfect Timing
Luxury Chamber Networking Party at Casa Sensei A large crowd enjoyed de;icious oriental appetizers and Lamborghini Champagne at this Fort Lauderdale gem of a restaurant. The guest speaker was my friend, Khalilah Ali, former wife of boxing champion Mohammed Ali. We ran into Boca friend’s, Shaheer and Gloria Hosh of Cristino’s Jewelry at this event.
A lot of things go into the realization of success in business: Quality workmanship and service. Execution of a novel idea. Effective leadership and direction. Those, for the most part, are factors we can manage. One factor, however, that we often overlook is timing. Especially, perfect timing. In his book, When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Daniel Pink addresses the importance of timing as it affects productivity and ultimately, our success. A Wall Street Journal article summarized his findings, pointing out ways Pink suggests for better allocating our time at work throughout the day. His research discovered that we are “smarter, faster and more creative in some parts of the day than others.” Confirming these conclusions, Russell Foster, a neuroscientist, claims, “The performance change between the daily high point and the daily low point can be equivalent to the effect on performance of drinking the legal limit of alcohol.” That may seem like a startling comparison, but it is probably very accurate for assessing when we can do our best work. Personally, I have learned that my best time for writing is early morning. My mind is fresh after a good night’s sleep and ideas seem to flow more quickly and smoothly. Not everyone, of course, is a “morning person.” Some people do their best work in the late morning, in the afternoon, or even late at night. The key is to realize when you are most productive and make certain to safeguard that time from unnecessary distractions. In reading the Bible, I have found it interesting to find that it places a high premium on our effective use of time – and timing. For instance, we are told, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity…” (Ecclesiastes
www.bocaratontribune.com
3:1). We can apply this principle in a number of ways, but one of them is that there is a best time for us to pursue our work, meaning we should strive to schedule other important, but non-work activities for other times during the day, week or month. Another passage, Ephesians 5:16, emphasizes the urgency for “making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” This does not mean time in itself is inherently evil, but time passes quickly. Not capitalizing on the time we have can result in failure to achieve desired goals and objectives. At the very least, we will have missed out on the opportunity to pursue those projects when our productivity and efficiency levels are at their peak. Looking at the example of Jesus Christ, we find that He also designated specific times for doing certain things, including prayer and time alone with God the Father. Jesus was much in demand, and at all hours of the day people were thronging around him, whether as observers or seeking His attention to address specific needs they had. For this reason, He devoted many early mornings to time alone, even from His disciples. Mark 1:35 tells us, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”Many people I know realize how important it is for them to begin the day by focusing on their relationship with God, knowing they will require His direction, wisdom and strength to carry out the work and deal with challenges they face later on. As the adage reminds us, timing is everything. There is a time to work, a time to rest, and time to play. Also, a time to ensure that we sustain a strong, growing relationship with the Lord.

She’s very good at what she does and everyone in Boca Raton seemingly knows her and loves working with her. She’s the perfect combination of being talented, out-going and big hearted. But how did she get like this? Gloria grew up in Brooklyn. She spent many years teaching children with special needs, from elementary through high school. Doing work like that can change a person. It can expand your horizons and open your heart to wanting to lend a hand or offer a kind word. But it was Gloria’s upbringing that put her on the road to helping others. Gloria says that, “In my home we always

had a tzedakah box, a place where we as a family would empty our pockets of change and occasionally paper money as well,” she says, “In that way, we could regularly give to those in need.” Tzedakah in a Jewish home is all about charitable giving. It is typically seen as a family or individual’s moral obligation to help the poor. Jewish farmers, even today, allocate a portion of their harvest to feed those in need. Her family always kept an empty seat at the holiday table, Gloria says, in case they discovered anyone at the last minute who had nowhere to go for that special, traditional holiday meal. She follows that tradition to this day with her own daughter, Alexis, a 26-year-old MBA graduate of Lynn University. Gloria’s Mother also insisted that everyone in the family do “mitzvahs” or good deeds for others. She would take Gloria with her when she would fill a shopping cart, push it around the neighborhood selling housedresses to women in the community in order to benefit local residents with disabilities. She says her grandparents were also an inspiration to her. “They were in the kosher milk business of all things,” she says. “During the holidays they would invite local Orthodox Rabbis to the house to dance on their kitchen table for their yeshivas - Jewish schools that provide secular and religious instruction in Judaism. The Rabbis always left with full pockets.” Is it any wonder that today, now living and working in Boca Raton, Gloria Wank is one of the most charitable members of our community? She is a walking mitzvah always doing good deeds for other. If you are interested in volunteering in the greater Boca Raton area, I suggest you think about what interests you and start making calls to organizations that could benefit from your donation of time - perhaps the most precious thing you have to offer them. If you seek specific volunteer opportunities, check out the listings at bocaguide.com/volunteer.html. You can also contact the Spirit of Giving Network at 561-299-1205. The Network’s staff will train you in how to be a volunteer and help match you to a local nonprofit organization. Visit www.spiritofgivingnetwork.com. For further information about the Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities or to volunteer, visit: www.boatingbeachbash.com or call 561.715.2622.
It’s “the season” so the temperatures are lower, the traffic is higher, and the dreamscape is more bountiful. If you lived in Boca Raton before they paved the streets, you know that this sleepy little town has grown-up for better (or worse). But the good part about this population explosion is that there is so much to do. There’s theater, music, dancing, food and parties from sun up to sun down. There’s a bustling philanthropic bent around every corner and it seems my contemporaries dance and dally for every imaginable cause - and that’s a good thing. Giving is about as good as it gets – unless you’ve been to the Breakers Hotel. Then a sense of giving fades into the hushed corridors and elaborate old-world carvings of rooms with names like The Gold Room and Magnolia. The hotel echoes its heritage of grandeur just as an innocent bystander witnesses a kind gesture. It’s an aphrodisiac that heightens the senses with artistic prowess and new possibilities. One of those possibilities is looking as youthful as possible beyond your stamped expiration date. Such is the reason we ventured to this castle of calm to attend the opening of the first US spa by Biologique Recherche called The Ambassade de la Beaute. This beauty brand – based in France – just opened their first US spa and they celebrated this auspicious occasion with a fête at The Breakers. Though their most renowned product is referred to as “Jesus in a Bottle” (the Lotion P50) it has an illustrious celebrity following. But what intrigued me more than the fanfare in the US is their beauty philosophy. “A person has several skins that change with conditions several times a day. Each person has a different skin Instants and we must understand the epidermis messages and adjust our approach to enhance it,” they say. Wow, I’m thinking I need a therapist to
www.bocaratontribune.com
monitor my skin instead of my psyche. Not to worry they say – they have over 100 products (available in spas worldwide) that will help you. The reason you need to be analyzed in person for optimal product selection is because stress, diet, lifestyle changes and other factors change your skin’s needs. I try not to think about my needy skin – that must be out of normal range due to my rocky life – but I think of Freud. Would he suggest I try a multitude of skin products to match my world view, inner calm or outer chaos? The answer (sans Freud) lies with Biologique Recherche esthetician’s, who are ready when you are. We also ventured into the Crest Theatre where the Boca Symphonia took the essence of musical enchantment and blasted us into a personal vortex of wonderment. Violinist David Kim is so masterful at his craft that it seemed there was no delineation between the master and his instrument. Kim is concertmaster (and soloist) of The Philadelphia Orchestra and AllStar Orchestra. When I asked Kim if playing violin was his lifelong dream, he hesitated and said he loved playing the violin but also loved engaging with the audience. He spoke intimately to us about the music being performed (Vivaldi’s Four Seasons) and added that musicians love to hear praise (the human condition I ponder). Kim’s mother prodded him to play at the tender age of three and his stepmother accompanied him to Delray Beach as his cheerleader and side kick at the after party. Kim reads music on an iPad and turns the pages with a foot control during the concert. It was quite extraordinary – and the Boca Symphonia is world-class. They perform in February and March and are back at the Crest Theatre April 1st. thesymphonia.org

Downton Abbey: The Exhibition Opened in Florida
Following its widely acclaimed New York City run, which came to a close in September, NBCUniversal International Studios opened Downton Abbey: The Exhibition in South Florida on Saturday, November 10. Downton Abbey: The Exhibition offers a fully immersive experience inside the world of Carnival Films’ multi-awardwinning global television phenomenon and recently announced feature film. It concluded its New York City run over Labor Day weekend and will now move to CityPlace in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach. The enhanced exhibition will offer never-before-seen elements connecting fans to their favorite characters, costumes, locations and historic events of the era, as well as showcase exclusive footage. It will provide a fascinating look at all aspects of the post-Edwardian period in which the popular TV series is set and offer in-depth insight into the remarkable events which shaped the world. From World War I to the Roaring Twenties, visitors will have the chance to learn about British society, culture and fashion. Hailed by the New York Times as “a cleverly immersive experience mounted with the same exacting care as the show itself,” Downton Abbey: The Exhibition received an overwhelming response, attracting vast crowds daily since opening its doors on November 18, 2017 in New York City. “Our fantastic experience in New York City confirmed to us that the huge Downton Abbey audience love the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world created by Julian, Gareth and the Carnival team,” said Sarah Cooper, COO, NBCUniversal International Studios. “With a movie in production and the Downton fan base more enthusiastic than ever, we’re delighted to be moving to Florida and opening up our exhibition to an even wider audience.” “As we are about to start filming the Downton movie, it is an exciting time to announce that residents and visitors to Florida will soon be able to enjoy the
amazing experience that is the Downton Abbey exhibition,” said Gareth Neame, Producer of Downton Abbey and Executive Chairman of Carnival Films. With an even larger footprint than its New York City counterpart, the South Florida exhibition will transport visitors on an incredible journey through the grand home of Downton Abbey and offer an inside look into the world of the Crawleys and those that served them below stairs. From Mrs. Patmore’s hectic kitchen and the gossip-fueled servants’ quarters, to the family’s glamorous dining room and Lady Mary’s bedroom, fans will get the chance to walk through some of the series’ most recognizable and beloved sets. Visitors will also get an up-close look at over 50 of the show’s official costumes, worn by their favorite actors including Michelle Dockery, Hugh Bonneville and Dame Maggie Smith. “We are most excited to have Downton Abbey: The Exhibition come to West Palm Beach after its New York City run,” said West Palm Beach Mayor, Jeri Muoio. “Our legacy as an arts and culture destination paired with the popularity of this exhibition is sure to make for an exciting season here in West Palm Beach. We’re grateful to our local partners – Discover The Palm Beaches, the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, and CityPlace – for their support in helping bring this extraordinary attraction to our city.” Downton Abbey: The Exhibition will be located at CityPlace, 575 S. Rosemary Ave, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. Tickets start at $35 and children under 14 will receive free admission. VIP packages and private hire options will also be available. Downton Abbey: The Exhibition is brought to you by NBCUniversal International Studios and Imagine Exhibitions. The exhibition is presented by Viking, the leader in river and small ship ocean cruising, also widely known for its national corporate sponsorship of PBS’ MASTERPIECE and Downton Abbey. For the past 12 years, vintage car & motorcycle enthusiasts, collectors, and motorheads of all sorts come from across the country to Boca Raton for the esteemed Concours d’ Elegance. This three-day, world-class extravaganza is one of the finest concourses (vintage car shows) in the country, showcasing classic and vintage cars, motorcycles, and other vehicles, all set upon the majestic greens of the Boca Raton Resort and Club. In fact, The Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance is the largest for-charity concours event in the world! This year’s event, “The 13th Annual Boca Raton Concours d’ Elegance presented by Mercedes-Benz and AutoNation” once again features the nation’s top car geek, Mr. Jay Leno, who will preside over all three days’ events. The Cultural Theatre Art Series at B’nai Torah Produced by Cantor Udi Spielman and Directed by Shari Upbin
Hadar Galron’s powerful play, Mikveh, offers a glimpse into the secretive world of the Jewish ritual bath. The intimate stories of seven women unfold in this revealing story of religious observance and evolving feminist consciousness. With humor, sincerity and tragedy, this provocative play explores the evolving position of women in this religious society. Nominated for six Israeli National theatre awards and winning two, including Play of the Year for 2005, Mikveh will be performed at 2 pm and 7:30 pm at Boca Raton’s B’nai Torah Congregation on February 20th, 2019 in the Weiner Auditorium. Mikveh focuses on two mikveh attendants: Shoshona an older one who believes in respecting the privacy of the women who come for their ritual immersions; and Shira a younger one from an outside community who believes the all-female space should be a place to find solidarity and share information. The two clash early and often over what to do and say regarding, among others, Chedva, a client whose naked body reveals she is clearly being physically abused by her husband, a powerful politician; and Tehila, another, just 18 years old and terrified of her wedding night with a groom she will only meet earlier in the day. (J. Kelly Nestruck, The Toronto Globe and Mail) Shari Upbin, one of the driving forces behind B’nai Torah’s Theatre Arts Series, will direct Mikveh. The production will feature Rene Barrett, Jennifer Coe, Kai Alivia Koren, Peggy Linker, Ellen Murray, Lory Reyes, Erika Scotti, and Yafi Yair.
“The beauty of purification under the laws of Judaism, immersed with the courage and empowerment of women that has indeed led to many changes in both women and men have driven me throughout this project,” Upbin says. “The #MeToo Movement, which women have privately felt for centuries, and the awareness of recognizing the signs of depression and actually stepping up to do something are paramount in this compelling piece by Hadar Galron. I thank her for the play… and I thank my mother for giving me the most beautiful Jewish upbringing.” Sound design for Mikveh is by Carbonell Award-winner Matt Corey and lighting design is by Sean Cutler, Producing Director of Ft. Lauderdale Children’s Theatre and two-time winner of BroadwayWorld. com’s Best Director of a Musical award. Set design is by Ardean Landhuis, costume design is by Carole Barou Mootoo, and the production’s stage manager is Jerry Jensen. Musicians Mario Zelaya (Violin) and Leanna Ginsberg (flute) will accompany the production. Mikveh will run for two performances only – on Wednesday, February 20th, 2019, at 2 pm and 7:30 pm at B’nai Torah Congregation, 6261 SW 18th Street, in Boca Raton (33433). Tickets are $36 ($25 for congregational members) and may be purchased by calling 561-392-8566 or on line at https://btcboca.org. Group rates are available. SPORTS PGA Tour Champions Event Comes to Boca Raton for Oasis Championship
Cinotti Leads ‘Fish Past Coker In Season Opener
By: Michael Demyan
The PGA Tour Champions event will once again tee off in Boca Raton for the Oasis Championship at the Old Course at Broken Sound from February 4-10. Oasis Outsourcing will be the tournament’s main sponsor this year and PGA Tour Champions President Miller Brady is excited about starting the tour in Boca Raton again. “The city of Boca Raton has been instrumental in the event’s growth, and our partnership with Oasis will make this tournament even stronger,” he said. “The players love starting the year in Boca Raton and the Old Course at Broken Sound is a great venue for our first full-field event of the season.” The tournament has been hosted in Boca Raton since 2007 and features numerous golf legends. Boca Raton resident Bernhard Langer lost to Mark Calcavecchia during the final round of last year’s event and will be looking to claim victory this year. Calcavecchia, a Palm Beach County resident, was considering retirement before the victory, but now he will be pursuing the title of the first back-to-back winner of the Oasis Championship.
“I just didn’t think it would happen again,” Calcavecchia said of his 2018 win. “These guys are so good. I hit it well, made enough putts and sometimes the good Lord just pencils you in. That week was just meant to be for some reason.” Calcavecchia and Langer will be joined by PGA Tour Champion John Daly, who said he enjoys playing golf in Boca Raton. “I always love coming to Boca Raton,” he said. “It’s a course where I can play aggressively. I can reach most of the par-5s and there’s a par-4 that’s very reachable.” Among the 78-player field will also be newcomers Gary Nicklaus and two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen. “I know I’m going to have a blast,” Goosen said. “I’ve been thinking about playing on this tour for a long time.” The players will be competing for a $1.7 million purse, which happens to match up with how much money the tournament has donated to the Boca Raton Regional Hospital since 2007. All three rounds will be televised on the Golf Channel. For more information, such as the tournament schedule, ticket pricing and parking, visit oasischampionship.com.
