The Boca Tribune has a terrific internship program. Hope you will donate to it. Here is the link. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/boca-raton-tribune-internship-program. Please contribute to it. The Florida Atlantic University football team picked up a hefty $2 million in appearance fees for being crushed by Nebraska and Alabama football teams during the past two weeks. FAU for several years has sacrificed itself on the gridiron in order to make megabuck fees for playing college football powerhouses, but FAU Athletic Director Pat Chung says getting clobbered by the big guys each year isn’t not worth it and he will be making changes. Boca City Council approved construction of 12 buildings for 75 new 3 bedroom, 3 story townhomes with two car garages and two car driveways, plus a 127 square foot fitness center and pool on 5,934 acres at the northeast corner of Military Trail and Spanish River Blvd, selling for $400,000 to $600,000. Boca Raton City Council voted to take the first step and negotiate a lease with Houston’s parent company for a restaurant at the old Wildflower’s property on the Intracoastal at Palmetto Park Road. Boca Raton former portfolio hedge fund manager Matt Martoma was nailed with a 9 year prison sentence last week after being found guilty on insider trading charges. The Fed pressured Martoma to rat out his boss Steve Cohen and cop a guilty plea to receive a lighter sentence but Martoma elected to stand trial. The high profile case involved $275 million benefitting Cohen’s company SAC Capital. Not surprisingly the Wall Street Journal reported that the dysfunctional Obamacare website Healthcare.gov has been hacked and personal information for millions of Obamacare enrollees is at risk. Already thousands of South Florida enrollees are in danger of losing coverage because the faulty website is unable to verify citizenship or immigration status that’s needed to qualify for premium subsidies.

Former Philly mob boss Joey “Skinny” Merlino was released from prison on Sunday March 13, 2011. WPVI-TV/6ABC

By William Bender Boca Raton resident Joey Merlino insists that he’s gone legit, but the number of people who actually believe him is dwindling. Sort of like the mob. The former South Philly mob boss - or current boss-in-exile, some law-enforcement officials would say - is facing a new round of legal troubles. Merlino, 52, will have to travel to Philadelphia in the coming weeks to face allegations that he violated the terms of his probation by associating with two felons and a member of La Cosa Nostra in mid-June. Perhaps more interesting, though, is why the feds waited until last week - days before Merlino would have completed his three-year period of supervised release - to reveal what they’ve known all summer. Sour grapes? No. A source familiar with the case said that the process was delayed due to the possibility that Merlino could have been indicted on new charges. When that didn’t happen, they showed their cards.

Boca man, 21, Faces Multiple Charges in Crimes By Jason Schwartz

A 21-year-old Boca Raton man was arrested and faces a string of charges in a series of crimes, police said. Daniel Esteban Pinedo-Velapatino, 21, was arrested Tuesday after police said he fled two crashes, then tried to swim away from police. Police charged Pinedo-Velapatino, of the 18000 block of Cloud Lake Circle, west of Boca Raton, with burglary, three counts of drug possession, two counts of assault on an officer, larceny — between $20,000 and $100,000, hit and run from an accident

involving an injury, fleeing an officer, motor vehicle violations, motor vehicle theft and more. The arrest stems for a report that PinedoVelapatino allegedly stole more than $8,000 from a friend who was passed out at a local hotel after they had been doing drugs at a party, according to one of his arrest report. Boca police had an earlier encounter with Pinedo-Velapatino earlier this month when they arrested him for using his friend’s car without permission. He was charged then with grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Local Firefighter Competes in Cook-off

Alex Callegari, a firefighter from Boca Raton Fire Station #5, is one of three semi-finalists competing for a $20,000 donation for his firehouse in honor of fallen firefighter John Wilson. “John was a professionally trained chef, a friend and a mentor,” said Callegari in his competition entrance video. “In his honor we‘ve created a foundation which provides tuition to the fire academy each year to one participant as long as that individual attends a cooking class to continue the spirit that John created as the firehouse chef.” Callegari went on to say he hoped people voted for his creation, the Boca Steak-umm Slider, not just in memory of Wilson, but

because his slider is “delicious.” The Steak-umm Firehouse Challenge Cook-off is working to raise money and support local firehouses. Contestants submit recipes using Steak-umm and were selected to compete in a cook-off. Celebrity judges include Chef Joe Bonanno, Chef Pam Green, and Chef Kevin Sbraga. Judges will vote on the semifinalists creations to help Steak-umm recognize firefighters who serve their local communities. Callegari will be competing against Andrew Dresher of Hummelstown, PA and Craig Weinbaum of Ft. Myers. The public can vote for their favorite recipe on the Steak-umm Facebook page to select the Fan Favorite. The winner of the Fan Favorite competition will win $5,000. Voting will be open until Sept. 30. For each fan vote a $0.10 donation will be made to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation by Steakumm, up to $5,000.

A Big Thank YOU This week’s edition of the Boca Raton Tribune is hitting yet another milestone. The 200th edition to be distributed to the wonderful people of Boca Raton. It is a marker in the growth and development of a local paper born out of need when another newspaper failed. Its print edition pays homage to the halcyon days of journalism while its online edition lets the public know we are heading in the direction of new and more complex technology. We could probably talk on and on about what a community newspaper is. We've lived it for the past four years, and many more years combined with all our editors and contributors. Many assumed when we began that we were going to fail due to the Internet and hand-held devices which would take our audiences away. But there are people who long for newspapers, and our 200th printed edition of The Boca Raton Tribune proves just that. We remember when we were just a website and published out "Double Zero" edition on March of 2010. Some people thought we wouldn’t succeed. It was probably the worst time to begin a news product when the economy was so bad. But we did it – and we’re still doing it. Since publication began, the Tribune has been praised for delivering news, helping nonprofit agencies by featuring articles about their activities and assisting people in need by publishing their stories. over 18,000 people have signed on to the Tribune’s Facebook page alone, not to mention those who read the print edition as well as the online publication. It’s reported that about 40 percent of readers

INTEGRETY MOMENTS By Rick Boxx

Focused on Fear of Failure In 2000, TV host, comedian and entertainer Conan O’Brien spoke to graduates at his alma mater, Harvard University, the distinguished Ivy League institution. While many commencement addresses focus on striving for success, he elected to focus on failure. O’Brien told the young people about to enter the real world of work, “As graduates of Harvard, your biggest liability is your need to succeed.” An interesting observation - the need to succeed being a liability, rather than an asset. Then he elaborated. “Success is a lot like a bright, white tuxedo,” O’Brien stated. “You feel terrific when you get it, but then you are desperately afraid of getting it dirty, of spoiling it in any way.” He closed his talk by exhorting the college graduates, “Fall down, make a mess, break something

occasionally. And remember that the story is never over.” As Conan observed, failure is a part of life. Rather than fearing it and desperately trying to avoid it, we should learn from it and embrace it, recognizing that failure can be one of our greatest teachers. If you are a parent, you understand this well. When a child is learning to walk, it takes an initial, very unsteady step. Then it tries another step - and usually falls. Before the child masters the important skill of walking, it falls many times. And even in parenting, we sometimes fail despite our best intentions. But if we learn from our mistakes, moments of failure are worthwhile. The same principle was true when we initially tried to ride a bicycle. Until we learned how to balance properly, we fell on our bikes. We might even have crashed.

But we kept trying until finally we could remain upright and almost instantly discovered a new, faster way of traveling. Failure is an excellent instructor for every area of life, ranging from learning to drive a car to making a sales presentation to preparing to give a first public speech. The issue is to not focus on the possibility of failing, but rather to make an initial attempt and, if it does not turn out as well as we hoped, start over. Every leader and manager, if he or she is honest, will admit to making mistakes and failing - during the course of learning how to do their jobs well. And the wise leader gives subordinates the freedom to fail, recognizing some of the greatest successes of mankind have been achieved through failure. As the adage reminds us, “If at first you do not succeed, try, try again.”

The Bible’s New Testament makes this reality clear: “For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man” (James 3:2). Earlier in the same book we find the surprising command to “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds” (James 1:2). Facing trials, difficulties and adversity with joy? The next two verses tell why: “because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:3-4). When we encounter failure, we must persevere and not quit. That will make success, when we achieve it, that much more rewarding.

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

Don’t Fear Taking Risks! It is good to be adventurous, boldly attempting new feats, exploring uncharted territory, venturing into places and situations you haven‘t seen before. Taking risks leads anyone to an exhilarating life! Don’t fear it! Even a turtle won’t get anywhere unless it sticks its neck out! And so must you! Yet, it is absolutely necessary that you remain subservient to God, His laws, and His specific guidelines; it’s imperative to observe all divine prescriptions! Be bold in all you attempt, but always within sound parameters! Moreover, every step you take, and every move you make, must be achieved with positive goals!

As a youngster I read a true account which I’ve never forgotten. It was a cute story about a little girl on a leisure walk with her father. At one point, she noticed some pretty flowers growing at the edge of the road, and she decided to pick some up and take to her mother. A major obstacle, however, was that those flowers were growing on a dangerous incline; she could easily fall into the precipice, if she tried it all alone. Even so, her father gave his consent to pluck the flowers on condition that he would hold her tightly by her other hand. Our existence in the world affords us the liberty to fulfill many things in life.

Yet, not completely as we please; their true value is conferred only by the integrity of each action and the way other lives can benefit from them! Therefore, be bold in all you attempt! Never fear taking risks if you are persuaded of the soundness of that new venture. Wherever you are is a legitimate starting point for something new and exciting in your life. Wherever you are you can find access to the road you must take to go where you need to arrive! Wisdom, ancient and new, may point the way you must follow, and show the things you are expected to do. In such case, you can safely proceed to the place

of greatness and of genuine fulfillment, knowing that such is the only direction God wishes you to traverse. Your attitude should be one of positive expectancy amidst whatever barriers you may encounter along your earthly pilgrimage. If you just look down and around, you may see signs that would keep you from moving. But if you look up, to the brighter side, you shall have greater confidence to move on. The obstacles are not ignored, but neither are they allowed to become a justified impediment in your journey. Therefore, don’t fear taking risks!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

The team from Boca Raton High won the grand prize for a labeling system that details a product’s international impacts. The students brainstormed a color-coded system to rate goods according to their social, economic and environmental effects. Each of the six team members was invited to present their findings at the 2014 AP Annual Conference in Philadelphia where they

were awarded a $5,000 scholarship. The 12-week after school program and scholarship competition challenged students to work together to address global topics and challenges through research, innovation, collaboration, and problem solving. The team from Spanish River High tied for third place and also received a scholarship valued at $1,000. Animal Rescue Seeks Donations To Great police work leads to arrest of robbery suspect Cover $25,000 in Services By CRA News Service Nineteen pure bred Labrador retrievers are seeking a home after they were rescued from the grueling heat in the backyard of a breeding operation recently, the Boca Raton Tribune has learned. The dogs are awaiting adoption at the TriCounty Animal Rescue in Boca Raton. “It was pretty horrific,” said Alan Gould, who along with his wife, Ellen Quinlan, runs the Darbster Foundation, an animal welfare organization. “These dogs had never been bathed.” Gould responded to an emergency call on Aug. 22 to “rescue the dogs and puppies from abuse, malnourishment, and deplorable conditions at a financially strapped puppy mill in Lake Worth,” according to a news release. He first saw three dogs penned into the backyard. As he looked further, he found three pregnant, undernourished Labradors, another yellow Lab named “Goldie” nursing eight puppies, and a smattering of other dogs. The Darbster Foundation and TriCounty Animal Rescue teamed up on a lifesaving ‘mission of mercy’ to give these animals in distress a ‘new leash on

life,” according to the release. The Darbster Foundation made a donation to help defray the cost of the initial medical evaluation and care. But because of the neglect and abuse of the dogs, non-profit organization is now seeking additional donations to underwrite the additional $20,000 in veterinarian emergency room, medications, vitamins, birthing needs, and spaying and neutering services. “Whenever we learn of animals in distress, especially due large-scale crises such as natural disasters or puppy mill abuse, our team at Tri-County rescues in Palm Beach County and beyond… this year as far as Turkey and the Bahamas,” said Suzi Goldsmith, co-founder and executive director of the TriCounty Animal Rescue. “This puppy mill rescue was particularly challenging as so many were dehydrated, needed vitamins, and three were pregnant and severely underweight. Now that they are getting the medical care they so desperately needed, you can see a significant difference by the hour.” The operators of the breeding operation, agreed to relinquish the dogs for spaying and neutering. They were facing eviction in early September.

Shortly before 5:00 am Saturday morning Boca Raton Police responded to a reported unarmed robbery in the area of 1999 North Federal Highway. At the scene, officers met with the 63 year old victim who said he was sitting on the bench waiting for a bus when he was approached by a man asking for a cigarette. When the victim told him he didn’t smoke, the man asked for money. The victim told him he didn’t have any money. The man then sat down on the bench and quickly grabbed the victim’s backpack. A struggle ensued and the victim fell to the ground as the suspect took off with his backpack. A short time later an officer found what appeared to be the stolen backpack behind 1921 North Federal Highway. Because this location is near the Boca Inn, investigators checked to see if a man matching the suspect’s description was registered as a

guest. It was quickly determined that he was located at the hotel. Investigators then conducted a photo lineup at the hospital where the victim as being treated for minor injuries. He confirmed that one of the people in the lineup was the one responsible for the robbery. Officers knocked repeatedly on the door, but neither the suspect nor his roommates would answer. Since 11:00 am is checkout time, officers waited. The suspect came out and agreed to be questioned by police. Back at the Boca Raton Police Services Department, the suspect, Christopher Harshbarger, said he remembered sitting on the bench with the victim but was too drunk at the time to remember anything else. He said he did have a backpack that didn’t belong to him but didn’t remember taking it. Harsbarger was charged with Robbery by Sudden Snatching.

New Healthcare Business Will Create 200 new Jobs By Jason Schwartz Vicinitas Cancer Care, a spin-off from the Cancer Treatments of America, is moving its headquarters to Boca Raton and plans to create 200 jobs with the aid of state and local incentives. The xx-based company, which is currently housed at 1200 N. Federal Highway, plans to invest $4 million to renovate and equip the 45,000 square feet of office space, it is occupying. “We are thrilled that Vicinitas Cancer Care has selected Boca Raton,” Mayor Susan Haynie said. “They will be a welcome addition to the community, and demonstrate the strength of Boca Raton as a corporate headquarters destination.” Through Vicinitas’ innovative approach to community cancer care, each patient will get a dedicated care manager to handle everything from appointments to communications between providers, in addition to helping the patient gain a better understanding of treatment options. “More and more patients are seeking an integrative approach to their cancer care needs, but are frustrated with the

limited options they have in their communities,” Vicinitas President and CEO Angela Marchi said in a news release. “Financial pressures are increasing on providers making it difficult for them to focus on practicing medicine. Vicinitas offers a unique solution to address the needs of both of these groups.” In return for creating the 200 jobs - with an average annual salary of $115,000 - over five years and investing the $4 million in capital, Vicinitas would receive $1.81 million in incentives. That breaks down to $1.1 million from the state through the Quick Action Closing Fund and Qualified Target Industry program. “The addition of Vicinitas Cancer Care reinforces the value of Palm Beach County and the City of Boca Raton as a location of choice for the healthcare industry and for corporate headquarters facilities,” said Kelly Smallridge, president and CEO of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, which secured the partnership. “We look forward to welcoming this company to the community.”

NY Judge Sentences Boca Raton Man to 9 Years in Prison By CRA News Service

Boca Raton resident Mathew Martoma, who was convicted of helping his firm earn more than a quarter-billion dollars illegally through insider trading, has been sentenced in New York to nine years in prison. Prosecutors say the former portfolio manager and Stamford, Conn.-based SAC Capital Advisors dumped millions of shares of two pharmaceutical companies after he learned in 2008 about the secret results of an Alzheimer’s drug trial. SAC Capital Advisors earned more than $275 million illegally and rewarded him with more than $9 million in bonuses, prosecutors said. Martoma, 40, left Manhattan federal court holding his wife’s hand after Judge Paul Gardephe ordered him to report to prison in November following his February conviction for conspiracy and securities fraud. The judge said the illegal trading edge Martoma obtained was “deeply corrosive to our markets,” breeding cynicism. “The gain here is hundreds of millions of dollars more than has ever been seen in an insider trading prosecution,” Gardephe said. Martoma must also forfeit the $9 million bonus he received and his family’s Boca Raton home. Prosecutors said Martoma corrupted Sidney Gilman, an ex-University of Michigan Medical School professor, in charge of the safety committee for what was hoped to be a breakthrough drug to control the incur-

able memory-destroying disease. Martoma’s attorney insists he made a sensible decision to sell the bloated stocks of the pharmaceutical companies that sponsored the drug trial. A New York radio station reported that prosecutors had asked for a sentence of up to 20 years, arguing a tougher penalty could deter others from participating in insider trading. The defense asked the judge for a lenient sentence saying that Martoma wants to resume his charitable work and care for his wife and three young children, ages 9, 7 and 5. While acknowledging that the kids will inevitably be devastated by their father’s imprisonment, the judge said he could not ignore the massive ill-gotten gains that Martoma brought into SAC Capital — $275 million. Gardephe also described a “darker side to his character” that emerged years before SAC Capital as Martoma studied at Duke University, Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Harvard Law School, where he was expelled in 1999 after using a forged transcript he claimed he created to impress his parents to apply for federal appeals court clerkships. Martoma’s lawyers promised to appeal, saying in a statement that, Martoma and his family were “devastated by the outcome.”

A Friendly Italian Restaurant with an Accent on Freshness

By Skip Sheffield

Chef Lillo is back with his own friendly neighborhood Italian restaurant, “Piattini,” at 187 S.E. Mizner Blvd., Royal Palm Place, Boca Raton. If the address sounds familiar, it should. Caruso’s Restaurant was at this very same spot, and Lillo Teodosi was the head chef. However, Lillo left Caruso’s, the quality declined, and so did the business. Caruso’s closed. Now Lillo is back with a new business partner, Alex Pepaj, who also serves as the Boca Life & Entertainment

restaurant’s host. “Alex is up front, and he has a great personality,” declares Sue Heller, wife of artist Yaacov Heller, whose Italian-American themed paintings are on display in the restaurant. “He’s like a fashion model too. His clothes are always the latest and the best.” There are many elements that combine to create a fine dining experience, but at the core is the food. Lillo Teodosi personally inspects everything that goes into the kitchen. “Our cuisine is fresh food, Italian, of course,” says Lillo , who was born and

raised in Rome, Italy. “I go to the market every day. Our seafood is only the freshest and finest. The octopus comes from Spain. We steam it for an hour before we grill it.” Lillo points out some of his diners’ favorites: lamb shank and lamb chops; meat balls that are 100 percent veal; savory Arugula Cioppino (seafood stew). Prices are moderate. The most expensive item on the menu is the $26.95 lamb chops. Lillo Teodosi immigrated to America in 1979, settling first in Chicago, where he opened his first Italian restaurant in 1984. He sold his last Chicago restaurant in 2007.

www.bocaratontribune.com

It is still in business. “The menu changes frequently,” says Lillo . “It is a seasonal thing and a daily thing.” While Italian cuisine is big on lamb, veal, chicken and seafood, vegetarians are not excluded at Piattini. “I’m a vegan,” says artist Yaacov Heller. “Lillo does it specially for me. It is absolutely delicious.” Winner of the 2014 Open Table People’s Choice Award, Piattini can be reached at 561-367-8851.

Tiger Bay Club’s Luncheon At The City Fish Market I attended the Tiger Bay Club’s luncheon at the City Fish Market where the Guest Speaker was Roger Stone, author of the bestseller, Nixon’s secrets and around 50 guests enjoyed Mr. Stone’s speech telling the true story of Watergate. He spoke of Nixon not knowing about Watergate and how he became President and served 3 years and how he visited hundreds of countries and was an excellent Diplomat. He spoke about The Kennedy machine and how Nixon underestimated Kennedy.

He talked about how Richard Nixon saved Israel by sending 121 million dollars to Israel. He also talked about John Dean, Gordon Liddy and Ed Mc Guide who were involved in Watergate. He stated that the CIA had two plots to assassinate Nixon and that Texas had 56,000 ballots thrown out and burned and how Kennedy stole the election. A very interesting speaker for sure. Thank you Barry Epstein for inviting me to this event.

Dashing actor Errol Flynn buckled his last swash suddenly on Oct. 14, 1959. He was just 50-years-old, but he had lived life to its limits. Errol Flynn is played by Kevin Kline, and his last love, Beverly Aadland, is played by Dakota Fanning in the biopic “The Last of Robin Hood.” It was Beverly who discovered the lifeless body of Flynn after he suffered a heart attack at a doctor’s house in Vancouver, British Columbia. Flynn was in Vancouver to sell his beloved yacht Zaca, so he could make Beverly, 17, his fourth and last wife and start a new life in Jamaica. It was not meant to be. Writer-directors Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland worked for ten years with the real-life Beverly Aadland, who wanted to set the record straight. Born in 1942, the same year Australian-born Flynn became an American citizen, Beverly Aadland died in 2010. The film is dedicated to her. Beverly was predeceased by her mother Florence, played by Susan Sarandon. If ever there was a nightmare stage mother,

Florence Aadland took the prize. Florence’s aspiration to a dancing career was cut short by a car accident in her youth and the amputation of one of her legs. Florence clearly saw her pretty daughter as her last shot to some kind of fame. Beverly was already working as a dancer at the Warner Brothers lot when Errol Flynn first spotted her in 1957. She was only 15, but she had a fake birth certificate (which her mother knew about) which said she was 18. Errol Flynn was already a washed-up hasbeen when he met Beverly. Kevin Kline’s poignant performance indicates Flynn saw Beverly has his last shot at rejuvenating romance. Beverly’s mother did not disapprove of what in fact was statutory rape of her daughter; in fact she encouraged it. In the end “The Last of Robin Hood” is a sad, cautionary tale all around. As much a rotter and libertine as Errol Flynn was, Kline brings out his magnetic, if pathetic charm. As much a monster as Florence Aadland was, Susan Sarandon inspires more pity than hated for a bitter, defeated woman who died of acute alcoholism in 1965. As for Dakota Fanning’s tricky role as the Lolita-like Beverly, at age 20 Fanning proves she is ready to move on to adult, womanly roles.

The play revolves around the witchcraft hysteria that plagued 17th century Salem, Mass., and how that hysteria split the town into those who used the trials for their own ends and those who desired good for all. The play runs from Friday, Sept. 19 through Sunday, Sept. 28 in the Studio One Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. Shows are on Fridays at 7 p.m.; Saturdays at 1 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays at 1 p.m. General admission tickets are $20; students, faculty, staff, alumni and children under age 12 may purchase tickets for $12; and group prices are available. Tickets can be purchased by

399 NW Boca Raton Blvd, Suite # 212 Boca Raton, FL 33432

calling 1-800-564-9539 or at www.fauevents. com. Although Miller wrote “The Crucible” in 1953 based on the events that took place in Salem, Mass. in 1692, he was liberal in his interpretation and portrayal of those events. The real theme that came out in the play was a response to Sen. McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee’s crusade against supposed communist sympathizers. Miller himself was questioned by the House of Representatives’Committee on Un-American Activities in 1956 and convicted of “contempt of Congress” for refusing to identify others present at meetings he had attended. “The Crucible” won the “Best Play” Tony Award in 1953.

columnists the truth about life insurance

FAITH

By Nelson Searcy

Family Matters… It Really Does You’ve probably seen the popular quote: As far as anyone knows, we are a nice, normal family. In the last few years, the phrase has been inscribed on everything from clocks to coffee mugs – and sales of these knickknacks have skyrocketed. Why do so many people relate to the sentiment? Because we all feel like our families aren’t what they should be. There are skeletons in our closets. There are old scars and new wounds left by broken marriages, wayward children and countless disappointments. Worried we’re the only ones with such problems, we do our best to portray a nice, normal image to the on-looking world. In truth, every family is dysfunctional. The question is to what degree. Family can be a source of comfort and grounding, but it can also be a hotbed for conflict and unresolved tensions. Thankfully, there are steps you and I can take to help keep our families strong and filled with love: Focus on God – Establish your family on a solid foundation by focusing on God. Start by taking time to pray together every day. If you aren’t in the habit of praying as a family, it may be awkward at first. Don’t let that stop you. The cliché is true: The family that prays together stays together.

The Lump-Sum Failure

of their wrongs quickly. Showing grace and allowing for each other’s mistakes is the oil that keeps the machinery of family running. Be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. (Ephesians 4:32) Prioritize Quality Time – Investing time in family members is essential to deepening relationships and keeping things on course. Build more family time into your routine by: • Having Dinner Together. Several times per week, have dinner as a family. The dinner table is where community is built. • Celebrating Successes and Special Occasions: Birthdays, graduations, weddings and holidays are powerful times to reconnect with family and focus on God’s blessings. You and I have a responsibility to do our part to create healthy families. But we have to simultaneously turn them over to God. We can build foundations, but we can’t control outcomes. As we put God first and then let go and trust him to work out his purposes, he will. In the process, he’ll build strong, beautiful families who display his grace and strength to the world. Be sure to join us at The Journey Church in Boca Raton on Sunday, September 28th for the kick off of the brand new series Family Matters: Biblical Secrets to a Successful Family.

Forgive Quickly – Every family is made up of flawed human beings. You’re not perfect and neither are those closest to you, so you aren’t going to get through life without being hurt. Decide to forgive your family members Nelson Searcy is the lead pastor of The Journey Church in Boca Raton. The 3 year old church meets at Boca Raton Community High School (I-95 and Glades Rd) each Sunday at 10:30am. For more, visit www.BocaJourney.com. He is the author of 11 books and served for ten years as a pastor in New York City before moving to South Florida. A growing number of people think not. We don’t often get second chances, especially with the benefit of hindsight. One of the most common complaints about life insurance is how the proceeds are paid to our beneficiaries. Chances are overwhelming that the proceeds of your existing life insurance policies will be paid like lottery proceeds – in a Lump-Sum. This may be okay with winnings from gambling. It’s far from okay with the proceeds of your life insurance policy. Every day I am asked to simply explain “The Installment Option”. At the risk of oversimplifying, the installment option is the equivalent of buying a pre-determined income stream from a life insurance company at a deep discount compared to the lumpsum alternative. “There is no way that a lump-sum payout is best for my family. I could not imagine a worse time for my wife to receive a large, lump-sum payment that we intended to last 20 years”, says Carols Romero, an investment advisor from Boca Raton, Florida. “There is simply too much that can go wrong. After learning about the installment option, we were relieved to find a much lower cost policy that guarantees the coverage is there when needed most”, offers Mr. Romero. Once aware, 8 out 10 life insurance buyers prefer the installment payout option. The icing on the cake is either lower premiums or more life insurance. There

is a Hybrid version that combines a partial lump-sum with equal installments paid over a pre-determined number of years, selected at the time of purchase. Depending on the payout period, annual premiums for the installment life option can be 50% less for the same amount of coverage or 50% more coverage compared to a lump-sum policy. There are millions of life insurance buyers who can take a few simple steps to protect their families as intended. With life insurance proceeds only lasting between 3-5 years on average, a better way had to emerge. Since 2007, life insurance buyers have requested an installment option. Ask any owner of life insurance how long he or she intends the proceeds to last and the answer is always longer than 3-5 years. To compensate, people use trusts and money mangers to pay the proceeds over time. This can be expensive and offers no guarantees. Income Stream to the Rescue. Instead of a lump-sum payout, consider the installment payout option which essentially is like buying a guaranteed income stream to protect your family. You can customize the payout according to your individual planning objectives. There may be tax considerations to consider as a portion of the proceeds are paid as gains. Visit the www.InstallmentLife.com web site for information and help comparing the installment payout option versus your current policies.

5 Must-Do Repairs Before Selling When you put a home up for sale these days, you're facing stiff competition. In most parts of the country, buyers are faced with huge numbers of homes for sale. Before asking strangers to trade hundreds of thousands of their hardearned dollars for your little palace, make all the little repairs you've always meant to do but never had the time for. These 5 basic repairs will help prepare your house for a buyer's white-glove inspection: 1. Repair sagging screen doors and other entry red flags. The entrance to your home is the key to first impressions. Carolyn Brake, a home-staging expert in Aurora, Colo., near Denver, prepares about 10 to 12 homes a week for market and she stresses the importance of creating a great impression right off the bat. "We're not so much selling the house as we're selling the experience of living in this house," Brake says. Buyers will be alert to signs of neglect or deferred maintenance, since they want to avoid expensive hidden problems down the road. Make sure everything at the entrance is in working order. If the screen door is sagging, you'll probably have to install a new one, as aging aluminum parts often become too bent or broken to repair, says Charlie Hudson, a remodeling professional and owner of Hudson Remodeling, in Lynden, Wash. But first, try replacing any missing or corroded hinge screws and tightening the rest. Patrol the perimeter of your home, inspecting it with the critical eye of a stranger, advises Katherine Carroll, agent with Century 21 Mountain Lifestyles in

Weaverville, N.C. Clear dead plants from flower beds, clip dead blossoms and stems, rake and haul the yard waste far away. A fresh coast of paint on the front door goes miles toward establishing a great first impression. What color? Drive around for some inspiration and to see what colors prevail in your community. In some towns, a bright red door, or a deep plum, looks great. In others, it'll seem over the top. Forest green, navy blue and black can be great door colors. The front door need not match the exterior colors of your house and trim, only look good alongside them. 2. Spiff up the roof. Missing shingles and hanging gutters broadcast a loud, scary signal to potential buyers. "You want the house to look as presentable and nonproblematic as possible," says Cathy Cowan, an agent with Windermere Real Estate Co. in Seattle. "There's a great deal of fear when people go out to look at property. You want them to be able to focus on 'Where does my bed go?' and 'Can we live here?' rather than, 'Oh my God, there's a problem with the roof.'" Get a roofer to replace any missing or broken shingles or roofing tiles. Moss growing on the roof signals neglect, so it's important to get it cleaned off. Ask a roofing expert to remove moss or to recommend someone who can. Roofing professionals may suggest treating the surface of your roof with a chemical to kill moss or they may recommend installing zinc strips on the roof ridge. Water running over the zinc washes minute amounts of zinc carbonate over the roof, killing algae and moss, according to Z-Stop, which manufactures the strips. When hiring someone to work

on your roof, it's crucial to check their recommendations. Amateurs can damage your roof with the careless use of a highpressure power washer. 3. Clear and caulk gutters. On a dry day, climb up on a ladder and clear all the debris out of the gutters so water can flow freely. While you're up there, recaulk the gutter end caps, advises Hudson. Seamless gutters are finished at the ends with a cap that's crimped and caulked. Aging caulk allows leaks to drain water down your home's siding. Get started by drying the clean gutter; the drier the aluminum, the better caulk will bond to its surface, says Hudson. He recommends using flexible butyl caulk made for outdoor conditions. Its color doesn't matter, since you're caulking inside the gutter. Squeeze out a generous amount and use your finger to smear the stuff around inside the gutter cap seams. Don't worry about appearances, since no one will see your work. 4. Patch nail holes and repaint. Moving inside the house, you'll want to patch up nail holes in the walls. Ask at a hardware store for lightweight putty. Apply it with a putty knife and fill in each hole, scraping the excess off the wall. Following directions on the package, wait for it to dry. Then sand the putty until it's smooth and flush with the wall. Paint the repaired spots with primer. Call a handyman for anything bigger than a nail hole, as it's not easy to blend bigger repairs into the wall and obvious patches telegraph the message, "I'm hiding something," says Hudson. Repaint the entire wall -- you're unlikely to be able to hide a touched-up patch, otherwise -- from

www.bocaratontribune.com

one corner to the next. 5. Divorce your smoker and ship kitty to Siberia. All right, just kidding. Sort of. The thing is, smells are a serious deal killer. When strangers enter a home, the first thing they notice is the smell. Don't even try hiding behind scented candles, potpourri and plug-in room fragrances. Buyers, ever suspicious to problems, catch a whiff of those and conclude that you're hiding something. In the kitchen and bathrooms, deep clean with bleach, then regrout tiles and recaulk cracks between sinks, tubs, toilets, counters and floors to seal out the moisture that encourages the growth of smelly mold, mildew and bacteria. If you've had smokers in the house, you've got extra work to do. To rid walls of smoke and nicotine film, some experts suggest washing the walls with cleaners using an alkaline builder, such as ammonia, and a glycol solvent (found at paint stores). Brake recommends painting an undercoat of Kilz primer onto clean, dry walls to seal in nicotine smells. Finish the job with a fresh coat of paint and change the furnace filter to further freshen the air in the house. Then, "send smokers down the street," says Brake. She's not kidding: Ban smoking, even in the garden, because the smell clings to porches, decks and clothing. Gardens lose their appeal when littered with cigarette butts. If possible, board your cat off-premises while you're showing your home; at minimum, clean the litter box daily.

If you suffer from poor circulation, injury, swelling or any condition that leaves your feet fatigued and sore, then read on to discover the breakthrough that can change your life. Good news comes in the form of a ‘pain-busting microfiber’ that is used to weave a circulation-boosting sock, called BambusaTM. Better Blood Flow The ‘miracle sock’ is made from a new, patented aniontechnology that is weaved into every strand of thread used to make a BambusaTM sock. This special micro-fiber thread is made from revolutionary bamboo charcoal to stimulate blood flow and revitalize feet. When this material comes in contact with body-heat it is proven to release circulation-boosting ions. The 3D-weave technology used in the material has been compared to infrared light therapy to help revitalize stiff and sore muscles. The manufacturer, who also makes a back and wrist sleeve, says the material provides almost instant relief to any part of the body it touches, making it ideal for diabetics, athletes, inflammation, stiffness and swelling. Anne M. from California agrees. “Bambusa socks are absolutely the most comfortable socks I have ever worn! My feet are no longer fatigued!” Therapy Without A Prescription! When the socks were photographed using a thermographic imaging camera, results showed up to a 17% to 22% increase in blood flow. This helped to improve muscle oxygenation and decrease foot fatigue. The socks have been proven to provide extended relief from cold, swollen and fatigued feet. Doctor Recommended Pain specialist of 30 years, Dr. Jahner comments on the 3D-weave technology. “Infrared therapy has been used for years at medical clinics to treat vascular and circulatory conditions. Physical therapists

The infrared anions generated by the charcoal bamboo increase blood flow and deliver oxygen to the tissues. After wearing for only minutes there is an increase in temperature due to the increased blood flow, resulting in improved comfort and reduced swelling. Twenty minutes after using the anion-fiber infused socks, patient has better blood flow and less numbness.

use infrared therapy to speed recovery. Better blood flow equals less pain. This microfiber works much the same way.” "Circulatory dysfunction affects MOST of the adult population in the United States. Heart Disease, Strokes and Diabetic conditions are at epidemic levels; anything that improves circulation improves cellular health and vitality. I use the Bambusa product myself and recommend it to my clients. It really works!” states Dr Jahner. Results in Minutes? John G. of California claims he felt immediate results with his tired, swollen feet. “Without exaggeration the relief was almost instantaneous. It is like a heating pad set to low and wrapped around my calf. I will be replacing my entire set of dress socks with these socks!” Relief for Tired, Swollen Feet BambusaTM socks are not a medical device or compression socks because they don’t restrict blood flow. Utilizing the special negative-anion technology, they comfortably increase blood flow and oxygen to tissues. “My feet felt wonderful, cool, and I never got that pins and needles feeling anymore. I love my BambusaTM socks,” says Nancy, from NJ. They are ideal for diabetics and those suffering from neuropathy or injury from repetitive use. BambusaTM socks can also bring comfort to tired legs within minutes of putting them on, energizing individuals who spend long hours on their feet. Goodbye to Pain and Numbness Marilyn H. has suffered persistent foot problems for years and noticed fast results. “The issue for me was per-

sistent numbness in my toes - it was gone completely after a few days of wearing these socks! Being diabetic, I never had pain-free feet UNTIL NOW!” “I went out on the golf course for 18 holes of golf, and when I got home my feet weren’t swollen, they weren’t sweating and my feet didn’t hurt,” says Lou B. from New York. BENEFITS: • Increased blood flow and oxygen • Reduced swelling and pain • Anti-microbial • Wicks away moisture • Increased range of motion IDEAL FOR: • Neuropathy • Raynaud's Syndrome • Cramping • Cold Feet Tom from NJ reports, “I suffer from chronic foot cramps. My feet were sore for days after the cramping. My wife gave me the BambusaTM socks, I wore them, and the foot cramps stopped. I replaced all my socks with BambusaTM. My feet feel great now.” Try Bambusa Risk Free! Order Bambusa™ at no risk and receive two bonus pairs of socks absolutely free! The technology used in BambusaTM socks is independently tested to boost circulation, blood flow and oxygen. These circulation-boosting socks allow you to wrap yourself in relief.

Business Fins, Furs ‘N Feathers a Staple Of Excellence in Boca Raton Since 1970 By: Veronica Rodriguez If you have lived in Boca for some time, the pet shop Fins, Furs ‘N Feathers on Federal Highway is one that you’ve likely heard of, if you haven’t already gone in yourself. It’s a quaint little shop that sells (as the name implies) small mammals, birds and fish, plus all the supplies you will ever need to keep your little ones happy, and this Saturday September 13th they celebrate their 44th Anniversary as a pet store that has grown up with the city. Birthed in 1970 at the hands of a man with a home aquarium and an idea, his daughters Lisa Holland and Debbie Broyles Holland took over the business in 1999. Since then, the shop has grown to play a large part of the community with a mission to educate pet owners. And the pride they take while saying so is warranted; not

only are Debbie and Lisa picky about the kind of people they let walk out of their shop with pets, they regularly train their customers on how to handle their precious companions, as well as offer education seminars open to the general public. Their dedication has led to a community who goes to them in times of need. Some time ago, for example, one of their clients passed on, leaving instructions for his son on the back of a Fins, Furs ‘N Feathers business card to take his pets there. “That’s what’s good about being a family business”, says Lisa. In fact, when asked what her favorite part of being a caretaker is, she replies: “The relationship that we get to form with our clients and their animals, I

mean...we get to know the families. I mean I know the grandkids and the great grand kids.” Their 44th anniversary will be celebrated at their pet shop, with day-long raffles. Any customer who purchases something will also be allowed to pick up a gratuitous item off of their customer appreciation rack. Ever the pet lovers, they encourage owners to bring their pets by.

NCCI Proposes 2.5% Workers Comp Rate Decrease for Florida in 2015

Funds that you can draw on quickly and easily can be a lifesaver in the wake of a natural disaster. Also consider keeping a few hundred dollars in cash on hand if your area loses power and ATMs are out of commission.

2.

Gather key documents. Make sure you have important legal and financial documents with you if you evacuate. These include copies of insurance policies and bank account numbers. Keep these easily accessible, as you would flashlights and spare batteries.

Protecting your finances involves protecting your credit. Keep contact information for your creditor in your financial preparedness kit. If you have to evacuate, reach out to your creditors

ance policies can help you recover financially from a disaster, provided you have the right coverage. Review your property, flood and life policies once a year. Pay attention to the riders, not only deductibles and coverage amounts. For instance, does your property insurance cover temporary food and housing costs if you’ve had to evacuate but your home is undamaged. Inquire about covering any gaps in your policies, and know whom to contact to file a claim.

5. Use a checklist. Include your financial

Review the Wells Fargo Advisors emergency preparedness checklist to make sure you are giving yourself the best chance of recovering from a natural disaster. Just remember that the more you prepare now, the less you’ll have to do if disaster strikes.

The National Council on Compensation Insurance Inc. has proposed a statewide workers compensation rate decrease in Florida for the first time in four years, the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation said. In its 2015 Florida workers comp rate filing, Boca Raton, Florida-based NCCI, a nationwide workers comp ratings and research organization, suggested an average rate decrease of 2.5 percent, the state insurance office said in a statement on Friday. If the office approves the decrease, it would become effective Jan. 1. This is NCCI’s first proposed statewide rate cut in four years, according to the statement, which notes that rates are 56 percent lower than they were when Florida’s workers comp reforms took effect in 2003. A state judge ruled earlier this month that

Florida’s worker’s comp law is unconstitutional because it no longer provides injured workers adequate benefits, and another case is pending before the state Supreme Court over Florida’s lack of permanent total disability benefits. In Friday’s filing, NCCI wrote that once pending court cases — including Padgett v. State of Florida and Westphal v. City of St. Petersburg — are final, it will “issue estimated cost impacts and if necessary submit amendments to the pending rate filing or submit future rate filings.” At the moment, however, Florida’s workers comp insurance costs are stable and similar to other southeastern states, NCCI said. NCCI also announced Thursday that it suggested an overall loss cost decrease of 6.9 percent for Kentucky employers.

FAU Routs Tulsa 50-21 In Home-Opener

Florida Atlantic University football earned its first victory of the young 2014 season with a 50-21 win over Tulsa, Saturday night. The night was fill with celebrations from beginning to end. Prior to the game the FAU Stadium field was named in honor of

Owls first Coach Howard Schnellenberger and by game’s end Charlie Partridge earned his first victory as FAU’s head coach. “I’m proud the team was able to bounce back after two tough losses and stay the course,” Partridge said following the game.

“This first win means a lot and that we could do this on a night when Howard (Schnellenberger) was honored.” From the opening kick, FAU took control of the game. Behind the arm of quarterback Jaquez Johnson, the Owls racked up 518 yards of offense in one of the highestscoring games in school history. Johnson was flawless, throwing 15-of-20 for 318 yards and three touchdowns and setting a new school record for most yards per attempt at 15.9. Wide receiver Jensen Stoshak had a breakout game, catching four of those passes for a career-high 155 yards and a score. Lucky Whitehead stunned the Golden Hurricane with a 47-yard run en route to his 125 allpurpose yards. The defense was equally impressive, forcing four turnovers, including an interception that D’Joun Smith ran back 23 yards for a touchdown. The linemen earned four sacks, including a 19-yard sack for a safety recorded by Robinson Eugene. The Owls held Tulsa to just 4.5 yards per play, compared to FAU’s 7.9. FAU scored the first 17 points of the game to jump out to an early lead. After a Greg

Joseph 21-yard field goal, Johnson dealt a career-long 74-yard touchdown pass toWilliam Dukes for a one-play, 12-second drive. Following Smith’s pick-six, Tulsa got on the board with a nine-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. A 32-yard punt return by Henry Bussey set the Owls up with short yardage, leading to a 14-yard touchdown pass to Alex Deleon to give FAU a 24-7 advantage. After the safety, the Owls took to the air again with Johnson finding Stoshak for a 59-yard touchdown pass, putting FAU up 33-7 at the break. Just three minutes after Tulsa scored in the third, Johnson led the Owls on a nine-play, 76-yard drive that culminated in a five-yard touchdown run by the quarterback. Joseph would drill a 41-yard field goal to end the third with the Owls on top 43-14. The two teams swapped scoring drives in the fourth as backup quarterback Greg Hankerson marched the Owls down the field and threw a touchdown pass to Derek Moise from nine yards out. On the ensuing drive, Tulsa ate 5:05 off the clock before scoring on a short rush to end the scoring with 6:52 to play.

Lynn Women’s Soccer Falls Despite Outstanding Performance

Where Boca Comes Ashore The Waterstone Resort & Marina – a Doubletree by Hilton – is a brand new boutique hotel offering chic, modern décor and luxurious appointments. Featuring two new restaurants, stunning event space and easy beach access, Waterstone Resort & Marina is the all-new way to experience all the fun Boca has to offer.

Despite an outstanding performance in net by Caitlin Shaver, Lynn University’s women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to North Alabama on the final day of the Bobcat Shootout. Shaver turned away 11 shots, tying for the seventh most saves for a single game in program history, but the Fighting Knights dropped their overall record to 2-2-0. Just as the previous match, the Blue & White started off slowly, allowing North Alabama (3-0-1) to get of several shot attempts. Lynn was able to withstand the early pressure and conversely deal several blows to the Lions. A controversial no-call on a hand ball in the midfield in the 25th minute led to the only score of the game. The Fighting Knights appeared to have thwarted a counter-attack from the Lions with a ball off the hand of a UNA midfielder but play was continued and Danielle Scanlon drove down the right wing. Her cross was

met with a few Blue & White jerseys but Chloe Richards tapped a pass to Eleanor Costello, who had a clear look on net to beat Shaver to the left post. Also like the previous game, Lynn came out fighting to start the second half. Jessica Thornton and Tatiana Penagos ripped a pair of shots on frame within the first few minutes and Jordyn Turner joined in later with an attempt to the right post. All shots were stopped by UNA’s Rachel Beninati. Shaver’s second-half play, though, kept the Fighting Knights within striking distance. The red shirt sophomore keeper made seven of her 11 saves in the second half, including a breakaway attempt y Richards. North Alabama held a wide 25-13 advantage in shots and 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Kirstie Schults (two goals in the opener) and Lina Forsman garnered Bobcat Shootout All-Tournament honors.

FAU Women's Golfer Christina Langer Knows What It Takes To Be A Champion

Christina Langer may have only been playing golf competitively since she was 15, but she has been watching her father Bernhard Langer play for as long as she can remember. Bernhard is a current member of the Champions Tour and former PGA Tour golfer, winning five tournaments this year and 23 total on the Champions Tour. “I have been around golf my entire life. It really is a family sport,” said Christina. “It was a tradition that we would go out and play every Sunday. My mother was the only one that didn’t really play, but she is our No. 1 cheerleader.” Christina has two brothers, Stefan and Jason, and a sister, Jackie. Even though her father was a professional golfer, he encouraged her and her siblings to play every sport and just be avid sports fans. “My father encouraged golf but never pushed the sport on us because he knew it had to be something we truly loved and wanted to pursue,” said Christina. “Everyone sees the tough German exterior, but if you saw my dad off the course, he is the most loving, personable

guy you will ever meet.” Christina, a junior at Florida Atlantic University, spent two weeks over the summer as her father’s caddy on the Champions Tour. While she has been caddying for him for the past three summers, Bernhard finally got his first win with her by his side at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open in August 2014. “Our dad always took each of us for one week of the year to a tournament with him. It was our own special “we time” where we made memories that you can’t put a price on,” said Christina. “As a golfer, it was really special to just be inside the ropes and see how hard his job really is day in and day out.” Last season, Christina shot a 69, her lowest career round and first time she broke par, during the 36th Annual Pat Bradley Invitational. This season, Christina is focusing on her short game and putting. “My dad taught me that it is your own game, and I have been raised to be strong and confident in myself and my abilities,” said Christina. “My goal is always to improve my scores and consistency from the previous season.” The FAU women’s golf team will travel to Daytona Beach to play in the Lady Falcon Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21. This will be the first time the team will play under new head coach Kathy Baker-Guadagnino. “We’re very excited about Coach Kathy coming on as the head coach,” said Christina. “She knows a lot about the game and has learned about what we need individually on and off the course. She also has a great resource in Coach Joyce.” Last year, the Owls finished sixth out of eight teams in the Lady Falcon Invitational. Christina has her own goals for the team in the first tournament and for the season. “I’d like to finish in the top three as a team in this weekend’s tournament because it would really start the season off right,” said Christina. “I’d love for our team to break 300 this semester. I know we have the talent to accomplish this goal.”

Lynn Men’s Soccer Enters National Rankings

By Chad Beattie Another perfect week on the pitch, bringing its record to 4-0, has helped Lynn University’s men’s soccer team enter the national rankings. The Fighting Knights made the leap to No. 6 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and debuted at No. 3 in TopDrawerSoccer. com’s inaugural Division II power rankings. Lynn, which was receiving votes in the previous top-25 poll, opened up the Wyndham Deerfield Beach Resort Soccer Classic with a thrilling 4-1 victory over Shorter University. It marked the firstever home night game for the men’s soccer program while Javier Mochon broke in

the newly constructed Bobby Campbell Stadium with the first men’s soccer goal. A 1-0 victory over a talented Lee squad capped off the two-day tournament and helped the Blue & White to its second 4-0 start in three years. A week after Chris Hellmann was named the Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Mochon added Defensive Player of the Week accolades. Joining Lynn in the NSCAA Top-25 is Saint Leo at No. 11. The Lions are No. 6 in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s power rankings. Defending national champions Southern New Hampshire holds down the top spot in both polls.

Golf Life in boca By Stan Moore

How Your Short Game Relates to Scoring

Golfers like to practice mostly what they do the best. That is true of both the power game and the short game, and it is something to avoid. The weaknesses in your short game are far more important to your scoring than the strengths in your power game. And like the proverbial chain, your golf game is only as strong as its weakest link. It isn’t the good shots that determine what you shoot, it’s the bad shots. So pay special attention to the weak parts of your short game, and practice them more than the stronger parts. Statistically speaking, no golfer’s play from tee to green is as important as the quality of their short game, unless his ball strik-

ing consistently gets him into trouble. That doesn’t mean you have to hit the center of every fairway, but you do have to keep the ball in play. The rough is not out of play, the first cut is O.K., and of course, any part of the fairway usually is just fine. It’s trees, bunkers, water, and O.B. that lead to the big numbers. But note once again, with everywhere from the center of the fairway to the rough, that the power game is the most forgiving aspect of golf. The Least Forgiving? Putting and the short game. From thirty yards away, if you pitch to 14 feet, you’re likely to hole the putt only about 10% of the time; pitch it to six feet, and you’ll make it half the time, gaining .4 of a stroke. If you hit 10 chips to 14 feet from the flagstick instead of 6 feet, your scores will be almost exactly four strokes higher. Try it: You’ll see. All of this is, more reason to learn, practice, and master your short game. You can aid that process by keeping track of your strengths and weaknesses with the handicap test. To take the test and learn more short game techniques, contact Stan at 561-699-2616. Text from Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible
