Lake Worth Rotarians Making a Difference in Uganda Orphans and povertystricken children in Kampala, Uganda have new friends in the Lake Worth, Florida Rotary Club, and a 14-year-old girl is getting a quality education. Last winter visiting Rotarian Kathy Musgrave from the Olathe (KS) Santa Fe Club spoke about her involvement in Tusonge Children’s Ministries in Uganda. She and her husband Bill spend their winters in Florida where Kathy has become very active in the Lake Worth club. They made a presentation about how they and a small group of Kansans stepped up five years ago to take over a children’s charity and choir that went bankrupt. Mrs. Musgrave explained that the children stayed with them and members of their church while touring the U.S. in 2015. “The children were beautiful, smart and kind. We fell in love with them. When we found out that their sponsoring organization was failing we didn’t want the children to be sent back on the streets. Story on Page 11

Coco’s Story is Serving as Encouragement to Local Girls Until her grandmother dragged her to the Pompey Park gymnasium recently, Sheryl Malone knew very little about tennis superstar Cori “Coco” Gauff. “I heard people talking about this young girl who played tennis, but I didn’t know anything more about her, … who she was or where she was from,” the Delray Beach teenager said after meeting the teen champ. “But after what I heard today, she is definitely a good role model and one day, I would like to be just like her.” Malone,14, was among about 130 family, friends and fans who attended Gauff ’s “Welcome home from Wimbledon” celebration inside the gym Saturday evening. The event, which was also attended by Delray Beach Mayor Shelly Petrolia, Deputy Vice Mayor Bill Bathurst, City Commissioner Ryan Boylston and Chief of Police Javaro Sims, was moved indoors at the last minute because of what Gauff ’s aunt, Joi Odom, called “liquid sunshine.” As I scanned the gymnasium, I counted less than 40 young girls under the age of 17. I think that gymnasium should have been packed considering what she represents

to young people in her hometown. “Coco is a huge role model for girls her age and younger. She is showing us girls that anything is possible if we put our minds to it,” said Asianna Livingston, 15, of Delray Beach. “My peers … wish they can be like her because she has accomplished so much at a young age, and the City of Delray Beach is really proud of her.” While visiting Pompey Park recently, I noticed Gauff was speaking to her grandpa, Eddie “Red” Odom, via FaceTime from England. He was telling her how proud he was after she began generating front-page stories and international buzz as the youngest competitor to qualify for the Wimbledon Tennis Championships since 1991. Several kids were holding court around him and asking, “Is that the real Coco?” (Coincidentally, the baseball fields at Pompey Park are named after Odom and are just feet away from the clay tennis courts where Gauff grew up training and the same courts where Venus and her sister Serena Williams spent their formative tween years

practicing in the 1990s.) It was then that it dawned on me that these kids, whom I am certain did not see the match, were witnessing a historic moment. Only days earlier, the 15-year-old had knocked off her longtime hero, Venus Williams, in the first round of Wimbledon, and then beat Magdalena Rybarikova in dominating fashion, before pulling off a comeback over Polona Hercog that will live on in Wimbledon lore. Her victory thrust the country into Cocomania. She became an inspiration to youths all over and urged them to give their best and never give up. “To all the young girls and boys out there, you can do whatever you want as long as you work hard and stay dedicated. The road isn’t always easy,” Coco, who has absolutely nothing to lose and whose confidence is at an all-time high, told the crowd on Saturday. “Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, not even your parents. It’s ok to be crazy sometimes. Crazy is good.” She added: “A lot of people may say I’m crazy for dreaming so big, but I think you shouldn’t just reach for the sky when you can

reach for the stars. I think the possibilities are endless.” She has learned not to let naysayers on social media affect her performance on the court. And even when she was down by two points, she remained focused and determined, thinking on the advice of the late football coach and principal C. Spencer Pompey, through her grandpa, “Never say die.” I have had the privilege to see Coco off the court and away from the cameras and limelight and she is just like any other teen despite her tennis prowess. In fact, when a reporter asked her how she plans to spend the nearly $200,000 in Wimbledon winnings, with the innocence of a child, she said, “I mean, I can’t buy a car because I don’t drive.” She however said she may buy some hoodies. As you listen to her, you will see that Coco is beyond the fame and gold medals. She is indeed a young woman who cares about all young girls and wants to see them succeed. Her perseverance and positivity are exactly the kind of influence all parents should want in their daughter’s life.

POSITIVE LIVING By Robert J. Tamasy

A Fail-Safe Philosophy For Failure Seth Godin, a consultant, entrepreneur and business blogger, posed a question to his readers that all of us have asked ourselves at one time or another: “But what if I fail?” Godin offered a realistic answer to that ominous possibility: “You will.” Then he asked an even more important question: “After I fail, what then?” Failure is one of the great certainties of life. Not every seed sprouts into a healthy, fruitful plant. Not every decision is the correct one. And not every attempt at trying something different, whether it is a business venture, an attempt to acquire a new skill, or even purchasing a new product, leads to success. However, failure is often a part of the process necessary for attaining success. As Godin observed, “if you have chosen well, after you fail you will be one step closer to succeeding, you will be wiser and stronger, and you almost certainly will

August 9 - August 15, 2019

be more respected by all of those that are afraid to try.” If nothing else, failure reveals one way for not achieving the success we desire. Stories have been told about how Thomas Alva Edison made hundreds of failed attempts for inventing the incandescent lightbulb before discovering the right way to get it done. If we examine the lives and careers of any highly successful executives and entrepreneurs, we will find their paths to success were littered with failures, times of discouragement, sometimes even bankruptcy. One secret to their success, however, was they never stopped trying. They refused to let failure define them. We find numerous examples in the Scriptures of people who failed on their way to success. One Old Testament example was Joseph, who got on his brother’s nerves by constantly reminding them he was their father’s favorite. He was sold into

slavery, then wrongfully imprisoned, but Joseph still rose to be second in command of Egypt. And he formulated a plan to overcome a devastating famine, not only for the Egyptians but also for his family and ultimately, the people of Israel. In the New Testament, Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, three times denied Him. Yet he later became one of the leaders of the early Church. And the apostle Paul was transformed from a misguided persecutor of Christians to another central figure of the first-century Church and author of numerous letters in the Bible. The Scriptures teach that failure need not be a dead end, but instead, can be a launching point. Here are some of its principles for dealing with failure: Team up with others. Failure is easier to bear when you do not have to carry the burden alone. “Two are better than on, because they have a good return

www.bocaratontribune.com

for their work. If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who fails and has no one to help him up!” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). Learn to rely on God’s strength. Failure often teaches us the importance of trusting in and depending on God, His strength and wisdom. “He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak…those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint” (Isaiah 40:29-31). Persevere when facing challenges. Quitting in the face of failure may prevent us from experiencing the joy of success if we just persisted with our endeavors a bit longer. “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).

Is this a Good Time for a Restart?

Birthday Party at Heartbreaker Horse Farm Sunday I atttended a birthday party at the beautiful Heartbreaker Horse farm for nine year old Brielle Watkins Herrema.

A calendar year has 12 months, but during the summer months many of us experience a notable change in work demands and schedules. Businesses often find employees distracted with their children being home for the summer, taking their annual break from school. Many workers are eagerly anticipating vacations for times of much-needed rest and relaxation. Either way, they receive a break from the daily demands of work. In some cultures, such as in Europe, during the summer months work staffs can take extended holiday breaks from their regular work routine. “Business as usual” slows, or comes to a sudden halt. With this slowdown in the pace and momentum of the work, business teams become shorthanded temporarily. A question then becomes how to use this time most usefully. In a general sense, the conclusion of a school year or time for staff vacations can serve as an excellent time for a restart. This might involve meeting with your staff as they are available, casting vision for the coming months. It becomes a time for reenergizing and refocusing your team. These “down times” can prove to be as important as the periods of concentrated productivity. Offering your team an opportunity to remember why they are there can help your organization in being more productive in the future. The Bible gives a humorous description of people who lacked any focus for their activity: “The assembly was in confusion: Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there” (Acts 19:32). While the context was not about people in business, it could describe corporate teams who

have become so busy they have forgotten their overall mission and goals. There is a temptation to insist on being busy for the sake of being busy. This brings to mind the boss who ran through the office shouting, “Don’t just stand there! Do something! Even if it’s wrong!” Sadly, this can be result in waste of effort and energy, and unintended lack of productivity. As a passage in the Bible’s Old Testament states so well, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…. A time to plant and a time to uproot…a time to tear down and a time to build…a time to tear and a time to mend…a time to be silent and a time to speak” (Ecclesiastes 3:1-7). There is a time for moving forward – and should be a time for pausing to review how far we have come and where we hope to be going. We see this theme, the recognition of times when starting over is necessary, recurring in the Bible. For instance, after spending many years building an ark and then experiencing the great flood, Noah needed a restart. We see him receiving it in Genesis 9:1, “Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.’” This signified the time for mankind’s literal restart. Your organization might not have just endured a great flood – or a major calamity – but a lull in the usual work routine should be welcomed. If you sense it is time for a restart with your team, don’t wait. Schedule a meeting today! Review questions like, “Why are we here?” and “Where are we going?”

FPL is carrying out this project in order to strengthen main power lines that may otherwise be damaged by trees and growing vegetation. According to WPTV, FPL is removing the vegetation to improve the services of more than 2,500 customers. FPL mentioned that they will have strengthened 145 main power lines in

Palm Beach County by the end of this year. However, local Century Village residents view this project as more of an eye-sore. The vegetation between East Village Drive and the Florida Turnpike that once made for a scenic and peaceful community is now stripped down and “ugly”. Resident’s have express their discontent in the project resulting in lack of privacy for a once serene community and are trying to make their voices heard.

Lake Worth Rotarians Making a Difference in Uganda Orphans and poverty-stricken children in Kampala, Uganda have new friends in the Lake Worth, Florida Rotary Club, and a 14-year-old girl is getting a quality education. That’s when we formed our own non-profit and named it Tusonge which means Moving Forward in the language of Uganda.” Today, Tusonge cares for 36 children. Their stories are heart breaking. Some are orphans from HIV. Some girls were rescued from sex traffickers or were about to be sold off to men they’d never met. One set of siblings saw their mother’s hands chopped off by a jealous husband. The now live together in a

2,000 square foot house on the outskirts of Kampala–a sprawling city of over 4 million. “The girls share two bedrooms upstairs and the boys are in the converted one-car garage,” Kathy said. “The couple who looks after them share their bedroom with their two children. It’s cozy but it’s a house filled with love. There’s indoor plumbing, clean running water and a safe place for the children?” The children are enrolled in a boarding school where they receive a quality education that will prepare them for the future. Many of the children are ranked in the top 10 percent of their class. Like all kids they dream of being doctors, mechanics, teachers and one girl says she wants to be President. Who knows? After hearing the Musgrave’s program the Lake Worth Rotary Club voted to sponsor a girl named Tracy. Their $1200 annual sponsorship pays for her room, board, schooling, health care and other essential needs. “Tracy is a delightful 14-year-old,” Mrs. Musgrave said. “She’s doing very well in school and is a great role-model for our younger girls. We were thrilled and shed a few tears when the Lake Worth Rotary made it possible for her to go to school. Thanks to Rotary, she has a great future ahead of her.” More about Tusonge, its future and ways to donate can be found at www. TusongeMinistries.org.

The End of Kmart in Boca Raton

There are only a few remaining Kmarts in South Florida and as it turns out, the around 40-year-old Kmart in Boca Raton will be closing this October 31. The store is located at 1401 W.Palmetto Park Road in Palmettos Park Square and occupies more than 100,000 square feet within the shared shopping plaza. According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the Kmart spokesperson claimed the Boca Raton location “did not

meet go-forward criteria,” and liquidation sales are already underway. It is also still unknown just how many workers will be affected by the store closure. Due to the Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization filed in 2018, the Illinois-based Sears Holdings has been shutting down hundreds of Sears and Kmart stores. With the Boca Raton Kmart closing, only two other Kmarts now remain in South Florida, one in Lantana and one in Hollywood.

sports PBA Men's Soccer Lands At No. 10 In Preseason Poll

The United Soccer Coaches has released their Division II preseason Top25 poll, listing Palm Beach Atlantic No. 10. The Sailfish finished last year ranked No. 11 in the poll after completing the season as the Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament champions. It was their second-straight regular season title after becoming a full league member prior to the 2017 season and their first tournament title. Coach McMahon's squad led NCAA Division II in winning percentage (.929) after compiling a 19-1-1 overall re-

cord and a 9-1 mark inside SSC play. PBA was eliminated from postseason competition in the NCAA South Region Tournament by Lynn, 5-4 in penalties after a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes. Defending National Champion Barry University sits atop the preseason poll. Lynn is also ranked from the SSC, coming in at No. 12 with fellow South Region foe Spring Hill coming in tied at No. 20. The Sailfish will begin the 2019 regular season on Sept. 5 as they host Davenport at 5 p.m. Lynn University's men's soccer program will start the 2019 season ranked No. 12 nationally as announced by the United Soccer Coaches in its preseason poll. This is the fifth consecutive season the Fighting Knights have opened the season in the top-25. Last year, Lynn saw its season cut short in the NCAA South Region title match by eventual national champions Barry in penalty kicks. The Blue and White ended the year 11-4-3 overall and 7-2-1 in the Sunshine State Conference. Barry will open as the topranked team in the country followed by Cal-Poly Pomona, Fort Hays State and

West Chester. Young Harris, Adelphi and Lander are all tied for fifth. Palm Beach Atlantic is the third SSC institution to be ranked, coming in at No. 10. The Fighting Knights are reloading for 2019 following the losses of AllAmericans Niklas Tasky and Jack Watson. Lynn welcomes in United Soccer Coaches All-American forward, and East Coast Conference Player of the Year, Lukas Ostermann as well as Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Levin Sandmann, to go along with returning starters Shay Brennan, Lukas Borner and Rodrigo Fernandez.

"We've always had very bright kids and this group is no exception. They know their priorities," said head sand volleyball coach Capri Grotowski. "They are amazing in the classroom and awesome on the court."

Boca Raton Football Club is proud to announce that starting Friday, August 9 the club will sponsor pick-up games every Friday and Sunday at Caloosa Park starting at 7pm. night is on the house. “We want the community to see what sets us apart from your average pick-up game,” continued Heizer. “We truly believe when they come the first night, they will fall in love with it and will want to tell more friends and continue to come every single week.” To sign up for this week’s pick-up games, please visit www.bocaratonfc.com/pickup to input your information to the Boca Raton FC Recreational League sheet. If you have a complete team of 11 or more players, please email us directly at pickup@ bocaratonfc.com and we will handle that directly.

Lynn University baseball's alumnus Tommy Kahnle has been tabbed Major League Baseball's (MLB) American League Reliever of the Month, posting a 0.77 ERA in 12 appearances for the New York Yankees in July. A 2010 fifth round draft pick of the Yankees, Kahnle is in the midst of one of his best seasons of his career, posting a 2.72 ERA in 46.1 innings pitched over 53 appearances. Additionally, he has struck out 67 batters in 2019, posting an unblemished 3-0 record. In his two years with the Blue and White, Kahnle helped lift the Fighting Knights to unprecedented heights. The Latham, N.Y., native powered Lynn on the mound in relief to the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championship and was named the South Region and National Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. He posted a 1-0 record, five saves, 0.00 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 12.2 innings of work in

the postseason as a redshirt freshman. As a sophomore, Kahnle returned in a starting role and led the Knights in ERA, strikeouts and opponent's batting average. He tossed the program's third no-hitter, the first in 11 years and second by just one pitcher, with a 7-0 victory over Saint Leo on March 13. He struck out seven batters in the win. Since his promotion to The Show in 2014, he has established himself as one of the MLB's premier relief pitchers in his six-year professional career, posting a 3.68 ERA in 265 games for the Colorado Rockies, Chicago White Sox and Yankees. This is Kahnle's first such honor, making him the third different Yankees reliever to win the award since it began in 2005, joining Aroldis Chapman (twice) and Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera (twice). Chapman was the Yankees' most recent winner, in May of this season.
