Rodgers Wins Re-Election, Mayotte Wins in Landslide

Boca Raton City Council will have a new, and a returning face starting April 2.

Deputy Mayor Jeremy Rodgers and newcomer Monica Mayotte won the two open seats in the Boca Raton City Council on Tuesday night.

Mayotte defeated opponents Armand Grossman and Paul Preste in a landslide victory that saw Mayotte receive 65.72 percent of the votes compared to the 28.91 percent Grossman received, and the 5.36 percent Preste received.

• Jeremy Rodger retained his seat by narrowly defeating newcomer Kim Do. • The big news of the wee was Monica Mayotte, who after all the adversity was able to win her seat in a landslide victory over her opponents.

• I’m very proud to announce that The Boca Raton Tribune election survey was once again spot on when it came to the elections.

Not only did we predict the ourcome, we predicted the landslide win as well as the tight race.

• Palm Beach County is determined to not let anything like what happened at Sroneman Douoglas to ever happen again with the implementation of the new Student Protect app. The app can be used by students to report mental health problems, social media problems, bullying or any other suspicious activity to the school police. If they find that swift action is necessary based on the reports, they will contact the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Office for backup. Under emergency situations, the app also has an emergency button which goes right to the local police department.

COMMUNITY Office Of Economic Development Continues “Success Tour”, Visits Nature’s Bounty Facility

The City of Boca Raton Office of Economic Development continued it’s 2018 “Your Success is Our Success Tour” with a visit to The Nature’s Bounty manufacturing facility. The “Success Tour” has been established to congratulate and recognize Boca based companies for their economic and community contributions to the City of Boca Raton.

Jessica Del Vecchio, Economic Development Manager stated, “Having the opportunity to tour the Nature’s Bounty manufacturing facility was amazing. We know the Nature’s Bounty products - but to see the plant in action was nothing short of incredible.”

Nature’s Bounty is the flagship brand of the Nature’s Bounty Co., a wellness brand company whose supplements are recognized throughout the country.

The election day numbers closely resembled what our own Election Survey said hours prior to polls closing with Mayotte winning 67.7 percent compared to the 29 percent received by Grossman, and the 3.3 percent received by Preste in our Election Survey.

“I knocked on doors and all I had to say was my message,” said Mayotte. “My message resonated with everybody. I just knew the more I knocked on doors the more support I would get.”

Mayotte’s campaign of overdevelopment, school overcrowding, and restoring the citizens’ trust, resonated with the residents and the surprise landslide victory proved it.

“I see this as momentum,”

added Mayotte. “This is what the people want, and those council people that don’t see that will be in trouble.”

Mayotte will replace Councilman Robert Weinroth, who didn’t seek re-election. He’s running instead for the Palm Beach County board of commissioners against Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie later this year.

In the seat C race, Kim Do gave Deputy Mayor Rodgers a run for his money as the newcomer received 45.38 percent of the votes to Rodger’s 54.62 percent.

The election day numbers closely resembled what our own Election Survey said hours prior to polls closing with Rodgers getting 51.6 percent and Do receiving 48.5 percent.

“There’s a clear message sent these last few years,” said Al Zucaro of the results on election night. “The people of this city are not happy because the establishment has run away with what they want to do and not put any thought on what the residents want.”

“Now we have two ‘resident friendly voices’ in the city council,” continues Zucaro. “That’s going to send a shiver up the spine of the people who are looking for control.”

Rodgers was not available for comment.

Palm Beach State College Teacher Boca West Country Club to Launch Job Training Internship Program Receives Distinguished for Young Adults with Disabilities Engineering Educator Award

Dr. Elizabeth Horvath, a longtime Palm Beach State College computer science professor, has received a Distinguished Engineering Educator Award from the Engineers’ Council.

Horvath received the honor from the nonprofit California-based organization Feb. 22 at the 2018 National Engineers Week Honors and Awards Banquet. Hosted by the Business Development Board, the event recognizes engineers and engineering projects in all disciplines, including aerospace, mechanical, structural and civil. In addition to the awards ceremony held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, engineering companies and educational programs presented their projects and products, most of them originating locally. PBSC showcased its Engineering Technology and Electrical Power Technology pro-

grams.

Horvath was recognized for her outstanding work in computer science education, including her development of a Python with Raspberry Pi course that she taught for the first time last year. The class not only teaches students how to program in Python, but also how to write code to control devices that communicate over the Internet. Students use the Raspberry Pi, a tiny and affordable single board computer, to build devices that detect light and motion, measure environmental conditions, and control a robot. They write code that will turn on a buzzer, transmit text messages to their phones, send emails or remotely control the robot from another computer.

“It goes beyond programming to control different types of devices. It’s programming at the next level,’’ she said.

Horvath said she is honored to receive the award that she considers a crowning moment in her 20-year career at the College. “I have had many talented and intelligent students who have inspired me.”

Horvath holds a Ph.D. and a master’s degree in computer engineering from Florida Atlantic University. She also holds bachelor’s degrees in physics and math from FAU. She has been responsible for the development of 15 courses for the Computer Science program at PBSC. She has been the Computer Science Club advisor for almost 20 years

Boca West Country Club has entered into an agreement with The Unicorn Children’s Foundation, Inc. to launch a job training internship program for young adults with disabilities in August of 2018. Interns will range in age from 1724 years of age who have an intellectual or developmental disability which makes it statistically more difficult for them to find jobs upon completion of high school. The unemployment rate for youth with disabilities is approximately 80% despite their ability and willingness to work. With the launch of the Project SEARCH site at Boca West Country Club, it is expected that at least 74% of interns will find competitive and meaningful employment following graduation.

Boca West Country Club will be the first private residential community to participate in this internationally renowned program. Matthew Linderman, COO & General Manager of Boca West Country Club shared “We are honored to be the first company chosen to partner with the Unicorn Children’s Foundation/Unicorn Village Academy for this project and excited to get it on board. My team and I are certain this is the beginning of a long successful collaboration.”

The Unicorn Children’s Foundation, Inc., recognized as a leading expert in the field of special needs, introduced the program to Boca West Country Club after receiving a training and planning grant from the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council to expand the Project SEARCH program and improve employment outcomes for these young adults.

Unicorn Children’s Foundation CEO, Sharon Alexander, added “This evidence-based program will not only reduce recruitment costs, improve retention rates in high turnover positions, enhance workforce diversity at Boca West Country Club, but we hope that it will create a cultural shift of acceptance, inclusion, and opportunity throughout the community.”

An information night will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at Unicorn Village Academy in Boca Raton from 6-7:30pm for interested families. Students should currently be enrolled in a Palm Beach County, Broward County or other private school and be interested in increasing independence, confidence and self-esteem while learning competitive, transferable, and marketable job skills. This 8 hour workshop is based on a national evidence-based model from REST to provide care companions with the tools necessary to help them build confidence and provide high-quality respite care to adults and children. No prior experience is required to attend this very interactive training program, only a desire to help strengthen families and our community.

One mom shared, “I struggled a lot as a parent of 3 children with special needs. The diagnoses initially were overwhelming. Because of my profession as a therapist, I

found myself feeling incompetent as a mother AND therapist, feeling I should be able to handle the circumstances. Three Heroes who left their Imprint on Others

As we were mourning the death of Chris Hixson, last week I learned that another Navy shipmate - Marion Dwight Evans – had died a few days earlier.

Almost in unison my friend and I said that death and catastrophes come in sets of threes and we pray that neither he nor I would be the third in that set.

Somewhere underneath the magical thinking, the Grim Reaper was actually poised to take another, because two days later as we were getting ready to lay Hixson to rest, news broke of televangelist Billy Graham’s passing.

While there is not a real “rule” to the Rule of Threes, it is a fact that all three men, who I held in high esteem, left an indelible and impressionable mark on this earth.

I had the honor of working with Chris in the Navy Reserves for two years after he returned from his last deployment in the Persian Gulf. He was a take charge Sailor who you could rely on to get things done.

And just as his peers relied on him to protect their backs while they were in the “Sand box” the students at Marjory Stone-

man Douglas High School knew they could count on him until the very end.

I was not surprised when I learned that the moment he heard shots rang out, the athletic director and wrestling coach got on his golf cart and headed straight to the shooting.

This is what I call a hero. That’s what true leaders do, not running for cover as some charged with protecting us, at times do.

I, and many who served with Chris, am not surprised that he paid the ultimate price for those in his charge.

As I shared with some of his shipmates, one consolation in all this is we would rather him to go the way he did than to be returned home in a body bag.

Chris was a champ, and so was Cmdr. Evans, a member of the Judge Advocate General’s Corps or a Navy lawyer.

Dwight was more than a shipmate. He was a kind and caring friend. There were times when I needed some legal counsel as I navigated treacherous waters on drill weekends, and he was there to guide. Two incidents stood out when the Navy tried to discharge two Sailors for failing two physical readi-

ness tests because they could not run 1.5 miles or do pushups. And although there were plausible reasons why they failed one or more parts of the test, the administrators did not want to hear those reasons and chose to “abide by the rules.”

Cmdr. Evans methodically pointed them in the right direction, and armed with pertinent information, they went before an appeal board. Both eventually retired with their benefits.

He was there for me when I needed a chief judge for my Black History Brain Bowl competition. He was serving as a judge, assigned to the Arkansas region, and he showed up and served as my judge.

This meant the world to the participating students, who got a close up view of a “real judge” in his robe that day.

Some students, still speak of that day, some 20 years, later.

While I never met Rev. Graham, I felt a kindred spirit as I grew up listening to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s “The Hour of Decision.”

To me, he was obviously not an activist. He was the rock star of Biblical literalism. He was bigger than Elvis and the

Beatles combined.

I used to love how the word Jeeeeesus would repeatedly roll from his tongue during the trademark altar call that ended each service.

As I moved to North Carolina in the late 1980s, I learned more about the man whose hometown was only xx miles from Chapel Hill. My respect for him soared some 30 years ago when I learned that at one of his crusades in the South in the early 1950s, he demanded the ropes separating black and white in the audience be removed.

Remember he did this at a time when it was not popular to cross racial lines, even among the clergy. Yet, Rev. Graham invited Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to pray at a crusade in 1957. He also invited Dr. King to come back to speak at a ministry retreat to help his team get a better understanding of racism in America.

All three men went beyond self. Graham crossed the color line. Evans guided blacks through the Navy’s legal system and Hixson became a human shield for his students.

People as they Really Are! It might appear advantageous for any society if people could be recognized and known as they really are. Nevertheless, that is a practical difficulty. Individuals are in the process of perpetual becoming. Some get worse than they were, though many make a significant effort to be always better today than they were yesterday, and so on!

Furthermore, the circumstances of any given moment affect how people will act; the manner one dresses, the location where one is present at a certain time, as well as the nature of any conversation held, brings something

different from each person.

Not to be forgotten also, when people are in a group they can easily put up “fronts” and act somewhat differently than they really are most of the time.

Even in religious institutions there’s an inbuilt proclivity on the part of some to look, act, and appear better than others which, of course, can never happen since there’s no human perfection on earth. No one can ever reach that level while in the world; any such attempt is just a fake!

It was the ancient, Pre-Socratic philosopher, Heraclitus, who had stated that

no person enters the same river twice.

Each occasion one descends its banks, the water is new, the gravel at the bottom is different, even the fish will vary.

Much more so is the case with human beings. The experiences of each new day affect one’s thinking and being; new issues learned and attitudes manifested change continually, causing one to act differently. Personal growth or lack thereof, from one day to another, affect the personal projection of one’s self!

Nevertheless, however true all that may be, certain features need to remain constant in each individual, regardless of

where she or he may be; certain values acquired may be among those things which never change, and continue to affect human behavior in consistent ways.

More than anything else, one’s identity must be recognizable and a person’s genuineness should remain steady, apart from other changes occurring. While much is in flux in every human life, there’s also much that does not pass away, and such are the traits which can best point to people as they really are, every moment you encounter each!

Office of Economic Development Palm Beach State College Hosts Celebrates Park at Broken Sound’s Federal Court Civil Discourse Rebranded Signage Program

The City of Boca Raton Office of Economic Development came together with The Park at Broken Sound to commemorate the addition of their new signage located throughout the park. A ribbon was cut to highlight the milestone of a major step in the Park’s rebranding efforts. The signage will mark the entrances to the Park’s 700acre planned mobility commercial and residential center.

Jessica Del Vecchio, Economic Development Manager stated, “We spent the morning at The Park at Broken Sound. This beautiful 700-acre property has to be one of the best examples of a successful planned mobility district (PMD). Their new signage is just one example of how beautiful this PMD really is.”

The Park at Broken Sound is home to both large and small companies that include corporate headquarters, entrepreneurial start-ups, manufactures, warehouses and many others.

In addition to business, the Park is also home to a number of restaurants, hotels, a day care center and veterinary clinic. The Park truly exemplifies the “Live, Work, Play” motto. Boca Raton Public Library to Host Veterans’ Information Event

The Boca Raton Public Library will host an information event for veterans of all ages at the Spanish River Library on April 18, 2018 from 12:00–2:00pm. Since November 2016, the BRPL’s Military Intel programs have provided veterans and their families with information about benefits, counseling, jobs and more. “The BRPL is happy to bring together these excellent organizations so that our veterans may explore and learn more about the many programs and benefits available to them,” notes Laura Sparrow, Navy (Ret), Supervisor of Account Services. “These short introductions to resources have proved to be beneficial to the veterans and their family members, and the Library will continue its outreach and programming on behalf of the veteran community in Boca Raton.” Presenters include:

Role models in civil discourse may be hard to find these days, but nearly 40 Palm Beach State College students have found theirs by going to court.

PBSC became the first college in the country Wednesday to host Civil Discourse and Decisions, a national initiative of the federal courts that gives high school and college students a courtroom experience of practicing civil discourse and decision-making skills that they can use in their lives.

The students, who are enrolled in Associate Professor Phillip Mancusi’s American Government and Political Science classes, assembled at 10 a.m. in PBSC’s own courtroom, one of the authentic training environments of the Public Safety Training Center on the Lake Worth campus. Inside U.S. District Court Judge Robin L. Rosenberg presided over the three-hour program.

“Every day, students face conflicts that require civil discourse skills that they don’t see modeled in their lives or in the media,” said Rosenberg, who initiated the program along with U.S. District Court Judge Beth Bloom.

“They also face decisions that they may not realize can have legal consequences in federal court.”

After skill-building exercises in civil discourse, a court hearing simulation got underway based on an actual Supreme Court case about cyberbullying. The PBSC students were divided into three groups: Eight played attorneys—four defense and four prosecution—and the rest served as jurors.

Four volunteer attorneys—Panayotta Augustin-Birch, Ashley Drumm, Derek Harris and Garth Yearick—worked with the students. Former Palm Beach County State Attorney Michael McAuliffe facilitated the program, which was also videotaped. A video promoting the program nationwide will be posted on the U.S. Courts website.

Rosenberg and Bloom, both of the Southern District of Florida, launched the program last year with high school students. It was piloted in courthouses in West Palm Beach, Fort

Pierce, Fort Lauderdale and Miami by federal judges and lawyers from local chapters of the Federal Bar Association and county bar associations. Mancusi took a group of Palm Beach State students to a session at the West Palm Beach courthouse in December; they were the first college students in the nation to participate. A follow-up conversation with Rosenberg—he had taught her high-school-age children in dualenrollment classes—led to bringing the program to the PBSC courtroom.

Mancusi, who teaches PBSC students about the federal court system, cannot think of a better way to add texture and meaning to his classes than to have his students interact with an actual federal judge in a courtroom scenario.

“I think the most important part of the program is it gets students to listen and not be so close-minded,” Mancusi said. “When it comes to issues like gun control, immigration or abortion, a lot of people’s minds are already made up. The whole purpose of the court system is to sit down and simply listen to the evidence that is being presented, and then make up your mind.

We’re trying to get students to do that outside of the courtroom when they have political discussions on Facebook or face-to-face in the hallways or with their friends and family. We want them to listen to what other people are saying and understand why somebody may be passionate about a particular issue that you completely disagree with.”

Mancusi and Rosenberg have spoken about continuing the program after this semester, alternating venues between PBSC’s courtroom and the West Palm Beach federal courthouse.

“I would love to bring students back to the federal courthouse in the fall because that experience is even more all-encompassing,” said Mancusi, who is a PBSC alumnus. “Going through metal detectors, interacting with U.S. federal marshals assigned to your courtroom, being in that environment with lawyers and jurors on actual cases, walking the halls—it all adds to the experience.”

Finding Hope this Easter

FAQs

Over the last few months, I’ve received quite a few questions on Facebook and Instagram, asking for answers and my opinion and thoughts on some different topics in regards to fitness and the body.

So I thought since I’m getting asked these questions, maybe these are questions that some others may be interested in getting answers to. So I’d like to do a Question and Answer article this week.

I’m a big believer in there being no such thing as stupid questions. If you really want to know and have a genuine interest, and don’t know, then the question is legit and deserves an answer for.

So with that being said, I took the question and answers from previous conversations to share with you here.

Hopefully, they will see you well and you pick up a thing or two from them.

Question 1: I’ve heard that if women train like men then we will get bulky like men. I see some women online and in person that are either really big or muscular and some who are toned while staying slim. If I train like men, will I get big and bulky?

Answer: There is a 99 percent chance that you WILL NOT get bulky unless you train for that mass you see on the women. Even still, it’s not a guarantee you’ll be able to get to the size you speak of. Our body type and testosterone levels determine how our bodies respond to using training.

So chances are you will develop strength, gain definition and tone your body, but not become the size that so many women are afraid of achieving.

There are specific training techniques people use to get to that size. So don’t fret, hit the gym, you’re going be just fine.

Question 2: I have been working out and dieting lately and have been doing pretty well and have been losing weight, but haven’t lost any weight over the past few days. Is this normal? What should I do?

Answer: Sounds like you may have hit a Plateau. Your body is on to you. Might be time to switch it up.

Have you switched up your workout routine lately? Changed your meals around or tried new foods? How’s the intensity levels you’ve been applying at the gym? Did you get a good amount of sleep last night?

Just like in real life, if you do the same thing every day, you and your body get bored and used to what you give and do to it. It becomes accustomed.

If you were to wake up every day, go to the bathroom, brush your teeth, shower eat, work, gym, and then sleep. You’d get bored. There’s no spice or excitement in your life and therefore nothing would change, and the same thing goes for your body.

It needs excitement and a new plan of attack to get those results being seen once again.

Question 3: What are the best exercises for a flat stomach. I want a flat stomach with abs. How can I lose my belly fat and get that flat stomach?

Answer: Well you’re going have to make your abs in the kitchen. Healthy, clean, and lesser/more eating is what it’s going take to get that flatter stomach.

It’s going take discipline and time. No matter how much you run, train, or exercise, you cannot out due unhealthy eating. But why? Because Abs Are Made in the Kitchen.

You can crunch, and you can sit, plank, twist, flutter or whatever other abdominal exercises you may do in the gym but if there is still fat covering our abs, like 99% of the world has, then we won’t be able to see our abs, which everyone has. Same thing with every other body part. Less body fat covering these parts, the more our gains and definition show.

And that’s our ultimate goal, right?

So what is the best way for fat reduction? Healthy eating.

Depending on the day, you may find yourself saying anything from, “I hope traffic is smooth on my commute” to “I hope the Heat make the playoffs” to “I hope my children are safe at school” to “I hope the biopsy results come back negative.” You may hope for things to go your way or fortune to favor you. And in the midst of all of these small day-to-day hopes what we’re really hoping for is a life of peace and prosperity and a better today than days past.

We need hope. And just like you can’t live without oxygen, I would contend that you can’t live without hope.

Hope brings life. But if we’re honest, hope – true and lasting hope – is in short supply in our culture today. We are flanked on one side by societal division, and on another by senseless tragedies. We are driven into a corner by frustrations about today and fears about tomorrow.

It’s no wonder that today – perhaps more than ever – what we need most is hope.

And that’s the story of Easter; discovering hope in the face of insurmountable odds.

In the days after Jesus’ crucifixion over 2,000 years ago, his family, friends and followers thought all hope had been lost. It had died along with the man they’d believed to be the Messiah.

Local Neuroscientists Gather For SYNAPSE 2018

FAU’s Jupiter Life Science Initiative (JLSI) hosted “SYNAPSE 2018,” an annual neuroscience networking event for students and research scientists in collaboration with Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and Scripps Florida Research Institute. More than 150 of the brightest scientific minds in the region recently gathered at MPFI to network and share their research findings.

“In the last five years, FAU’s neuroscience presence has grown dramatically,” said Rod Murphey, Ph.D., director of the JLSI and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences at FAU. “This very impressive showing at the SYNAPSE event demonstrates our success.”

Representatives from nearby Nova Southeastern University and Torrey Pines Institute also took advantage of this unique event. More than 40 posters were displayed, covering an impressive range of topics such as behavioral studies, neural computations and molecular neuroscience.

“SYNAPSE 2018 gave the unique opportunity for researchers, ranging from undergraduates to principal investigators from all institutes, to come together to share their work and network,” said Serena Sossi, FAU Ph.D. candidate. “This intermingling of backgrounds inescapably leads to a flow of ideas allowing collaboration to flourish.”

Palm Healthcare Foundation Announces Annual Let’s Move Physical Activity Challenge

Palm Healthcare Foundation, Inc., Palm Beach County’s community foundation for health with a mission to improve health through community collaboration, has just announced its 6th annual Let’s Move: Commit to Change Physical Activity Challenge beginning Thursday, March 1, 2018 and running through Saturday, March 31, 2018.

The Let’s Move: Commit to Change Physical Activity Challenge is a countywide campaign that focuses on physical activity, nutrition and healthy behaviors. Palm Healthcare Foundation, Inc., in partnership with PNC Bank and CBS12, sponsors the annual challenge. The foundation hopes that Palm Beach County residents who participate in the challenge will continue incorporating physical activity in their daily lives beyond the month of March. Regular physical activity can make a lasting change in health because it decreases the risk for obesity. But, it also provides other surprising benefits. Physical activity can:

Increase your chances of living longer

To make the competition even more exciting this year, Palm Healthcare Foundation is hosting the first-ever Let's Move Video Contest. In order to participate, each Let’s Move team must record themselves in a video that will inspire people to get physically active – this can be a music video, fun fitness routine, choreographed dance, or any other type of creative video. “Let’s Move” must be mentioned in the video in order to qualify.

All entries should be 3 minutes long or less.

All video contest entries are due by Monday, March 19.

Palm Beach State College Receives CTE Business Partner of the Year Award

Palm Beach State College has been named Career and Technical Education Business Partner of the Year by the Palm Beach County School District’s Department of Choice and Career Options.

The award was presented Tuesday at the school district’s CTE recognition dinner at the Marriott hotel in West Palm Beach.

Tera Hands, choice coordinator at Palm Beach Lakes High School, nominated PBSC, citing a laundry list of support her school specifically received from College staff at career and college fairs, namely at FirstFridays@PBL, a monthly event she launched in 2015 to raise awareness of career and technical education opportunities available for students. She noted that with the help of PBSC staff, students there also began taking the Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam successfully. She highlighted the Palm Beach Lakes Biotech pipeline, in which students can complete the program there, attend PBSC’s Biotechnology program, and then continue their education at the University of Florida.

SPORTS FAU Baseball Continues to Roll

The Florida Atlantic University baseball team, winners of five in a row with four straight games of 10 runs or more, lifts the lid on their Conference USA schedule this weekend, taking on Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia, Friday-Sunday.

To go along with the preview of the series with the Monarchs, click the above link to listen to Episode No. 3 of the #CoachMacPodcast, now officially titled “Mac’s Musings.” The focus of this edition is Conference USA opponents.

The Owls (13-4) followed up a weekend sweep of Seton Hall with two more home wins, topping North Florida by scores of 14-1 and 10-9. Over the last four contests, the team has outscored their opposition 45-13, and the last two games featured 10 FAU home runs.

All told now, 11 Owls have hit 17 home runs, led by Tyler Frank with four and three by Gunnar Lambert. The squad has 30 additional extra base hits (25 doubles and five triples). Over the last five games, the team batting average has risen 32 points with almost double the amount of the extra base hits (24 to 47).

As the offense has solidified, the pitching has continued to shine, especially the weekend starting arms. Jake Miednik, Kyle Marman and Vince Coletti are a combined 8-2 and a 1.39 ERA, walking a total of 10 batters versus 91 strikeouts. As of Monday, Marman ranked No. 1 in Division I with his four wins, is fourth among all pitchers with a 19.5:1 strikeout to walk ratio,

and is ninth with 39 strikeouts.

Old Dominion (7-9) has won four of six, including Wednesday’s 19-4 rout of VMI. The Monarchs were regular season runners-up last year in C-USA, going 19-11 and 37-21 overall.

So far this year, they have had no trouble swinging the bats, at .309 as a squad, with Culver Lamb leading six .300-plus hitters at .364. On the opposite side, the pitching has scuffled a bit, with a team ERA of 5.32.

Here are the probable starting matchups for the first C-USA games of the year for each side:

Friday, 6 p.m.: Owls - Senior LHP Miednik (3-1, 1.03 ERA) vs. Monarchs Freshman RHP Erik Stock (0-0, 7.20 ERA)

Saturday, 3 p.m.: Owls - Junior RHP Marman (4-0, 0.73 ERA) vs. Monarchs - Redshirt Sophomore RHP Brett Smith (1-1, 6.06 ERA)

Sunday, 11 a.m.: Owls - Junior RHP Coletti (1-1, 2.66 ERA) vs. Monarchs - Junior RHP Morgan Maguire (2-1, 3.42 ERA) The Owls hold an 11-3 advantage over ODU all-time, winning three out of four last season, including a 6-2 FAU win in the C-USA Championship. In Norfolk, it is a 5-1 advantage in favor of the visiting Owls.

After a midweek game next Wednesday at Miami, the Owls return to Boca Raton to host their first home C-USA series, March 23-25 versus Southern Miss.

Boca Raton FC Inks Rafinha for NPSL Season

Boca Raton, FL — As Boca Raton FC continues to prepare for the 2018 NPSL season, the club is excited to announce the signing of Rafinha for the 2018 National Premier Soccer League season.
