More Needs to Be Done Now to Stem Summer Learning Loss When asked why he had not completed his assignment to research a topic for the following day, one boy in the STEAMfocused summer camp flatly responded, “This is summer camp, not school and I don’t like to read.” What an indictment! Summer is here, school is out and the American ideal of lazy summers filled with fun has an unintended consequence: “summer slide, summer setback, summer learning loss or summer brain drain,” the term that refers to children losing academic skills during the summertime, when they are most often out of practice. It is no secret that summertime is one of the most critical periods for elementary and secondary students. For many, it signifies ball games, pools, family vacations, and that longed-for break from schoolwork. But it is one of the most important, yet least acknowledged, causes of underachievement in our schools. Scholastic Corporation, an education and media company that publishes books and educational materials for schools, teachers, parents, and children, commissioned a study of 2,758 students earlier this year, which showed that 32 percent of kids ages 15-17 said they do not read any books over the summer, compared to 22 percent in 2016. While summer slide impacts all students, studies show significant summer
learning loss gets worse or better depending on the grade level, the subject, the socioeconomic status of the students’ families, and any number of other factors. Knowing that students who are not engaged in learning over the summer lose skills in math, reading and writing, a handful of local organizations are taking steps to ensure that learning continues. Our local librarians, education advocates and summer camp organizers know that the odds of many students picking up a book while out of school for 10 weeks are slim to none. So, they are offering reading and other interactive programs for children to try new things, participate in crafts and activities as well as allow them to socially interact with their peers. These programs are a good band aid. But more needs to be done. I have been hearing about efforts to put more books into the hands of kids for years but somehow, it does not seem to be working. Or if it is, the impact is unsatisfactory. Let me also add that this problem of summer learning loss has been of interest to education researchers dating back as far as 1906. The time is come for our thought leaders to create strategies other than what is being used now. With all the advances in educational technology such as animated e-books, interac-
tive whiteboards, and mobile literacy apps, summer learning loss should not be an issue that we are still trying to address. We cannot and should no longer rely on our educators to address learning during the summer. After all, they are burned out from nine months of working in the classrooms. It will take community organizations dedicated to youth growth and development, not those who see it as a job, to bring about plausible change. These organizations would need to form partnerships with our school district to leverage resources for the summer. Above all, the learning during those 10 weeks must be fun. There needs to be blended academic learning with hands-on or recreational activities, professionalizing summer school staff, and forming partnerships with community organizations to leverage resources. Also, parents can help by asking your child’s teachers about areas where your child could use a little extra attention over the summer, and ask about recommended summer reading to prepare for class this coming fall. Once again, we need to diversify our approach to learning so that it is fun. In fairness to our children, after being cooped up in a building for nine months, they need to be outdoors or in environments that promote learning during the summer.
One example is my organization, KOP Mentoring Network, a local nonprofit, which has been using non-traditional approaches to make learning fun. This summer, the organization is using professionals and retired educators and law enforcement personnel to expose the campers to life through field trips and guest speakers. Over the last three weeks, they spent a day at the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, the Kennedy Space Center and the Apple Store. They also learned how to program and fly drones, learned about the stock market, toured four radio stations and observed a robot perform a surgery in a local hospital. Campers are required to do journals daily. Let me add that a lack of basic literacy skills is linked with academic failure, delinquency, low productivity, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, unemployment and welfare dependency. Pair these facts with the reality that low-income students often do not even have access to and it becomes clear how children from disadvantaged families start a new school with reading scores 30 percent lower than students with steady access to books. Furthermore, each fall, teachers spend an average of four to six weeks re-teaching last year’s content that students forgot over summer break.
POSITIVE LIVING By Robert J. Tamasy
What’s the Reason Behind Your Work? Why do you go to work? For many of us, we would not have to blink before answering: “I work to make a living.” “I work to earn an income that can support the kind of life I want to live.” “I work so I can pay my bills.” None of these answers are wrong, but are they good enough? Recently I attended a breakfast meeting where the guest speaker said we should consider at this question from another perspective. “Do you work to earn a living?” he asked, “or do you work to make a difference?” Without question, work does enable us to live and meet our financial obligations. Bills do not pay themselves. And food, clothing and other necessities don’t miraculously materialize. If we need something, it requires money to obtain it. However, as the speaker suggested, if we approach work only for the compensation we receive, we will regard it as an obligation
July 12 - July 18, 2019
and not an opportunity. There are many ways we can make a difference through we work we perform and responsibilities we carry out. A law enforcement officer, for example, can either view his or her job as being paid to apprehend law breakers, or begin each day with an unwavering determination to use their roles of authority for making their communities better places to live. Teachers can regard their jobs as sources of income or as a way for having a positive impact in the lives of their students, helping to shape them into productive people. Some professions, such as practicing medicine or law, or being top executives, often enable people to earn lucrative incomes. But as many people have discovered, no matter how much money you earn, it is never enough. When one wealthy businessman was asked, “How much is enough?”, he immediately responded, “Just
a little bit more.” So the excitement over how much one gets paid soon fades, However, if the focus is on making a difference in the world, or in the lives of individual people, there is no limit to the intangible rewards we can receive as we go to work each day. We see this truth addressed in the Scriptures in many ways. Here are some examples: We are created to do good. Nowhere in the Bible does it say the purpose of work is only “to earn a living.” It does say, however, the work we are uniquely positioned and called to perform has been specially designed for do. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). Through our work we can bring light to a world of growing darkness. For many reasons, we live in a world of growing
www.bocaratontribune.com
negativity. Times often seem increasingly dark and disheartening. Through our work, we have the privilege of bringing the light of hope, affirming the life-giving truths and principles God has presented through His Word, the Scriptures. “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). We can find fulfillment in work well done. God has entrusted each of us with specific, unique talents and abilities. In doing our work – and serving others – we also are honoring Him. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might…” (Ecclesiastes 9:10). “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men…. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24).

The Gift Of A Teachable Spirit
Boca Horse Farms Newest Baby Foal I visited my new friend and neighbor, Rebecca to view the brand new baby foal, Diamond, born to one of her eleven horses recently. What an adorable little frisky brown foal she is. Rebecca owns eleven beautiful horses and is a champion equestrian rider and recently moved to her farm here in West Boca.
My friend, Larry, was being interviewed for a position to run the operations of a large, privately held, family business. The owners said they also wanted him to mentor the CEO’s son, with the intent that the young man would one day preside over the corporation. During the interview, the executive’s son pointedly asked Larry, “Can you train me to eventually lead this organization?” Larry responded honestly, “That is up to you. If you have a teachable spirit, I can train you to run this business.” Apparently, the company ownership liked the response, because Larry got the job. The world of business is littered with the failures of men and women that had great potential – possessing the intelligence and skill sets to perform well in their jobs, yet lacking one important quality: Teachability. When someone is unwilling to learn, assuming they already know everything there is to know, or acting obstinate and refusing to receive much-needed, well-intended instruction, predictably their likelihood of success is very low. This applies to mentoring relationships as well. A mentor can only help the person he or she is mentoring if that individual is receptive to the insights and experience the mentor wishes to offer. Someone that is unwilling to learn, even if it means humbling oneself enough to be corrected as well as instructed, is poor leadership material. The Bible speaks about this often, especially in the book of Proverbs. For instance, Proverbs 9:8 says, “Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you, reprove a wise man and he will love you.” Many people, for whatever reason, become “stiff-necked” when someone
attempts to teach them. Someone that is teachable, however, remains receptive to what they can learn from others, even their peers. Another passage states, “He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray” (Proverbs 10:17). A teachable person appreciates learning about how to improve and overcome weaknesses. Yet another verse points out a desire to learn reflects growing wisdom: “Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin” (Proverbs 10:15). Being teachable is a characteristic of established leaders, as well younger people striving to advance in their careers. One familiar verse describes requirements for leadership: “Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach” (1 Timothy 3:2). However, a different translation of the same passage expresses it this way: “Therefore, an elder must be blameless… stable, sensible, respectable, hospitable to strangers, and teachable.” One more passage offers a similar sentiment: “Which of you is a wise and well-instructed man? Let him prove it by a right life with conduct guided by a wisely teachable spirit” (James 3:13). When looking for younger leaders in whom to invest your time, or to cultivate for future leadership, first look for those with a teachable spirit. Your investment of time and energy will prove to be far more fruitful. At the same time, we should never lose sight of the importance of remaining teachable ourselves. We are never too old, or too accomplished, to learn.

Capital Bank has begun taking additional steps with an aggressive South Florida growth plan including the addition of a West Palm Beach office, the first of several new locations over the coming months, along with the onboarding of 22 bankers from regional financial institutions. The new office in WPB is located at 3601 PGA Boulevard and will be headed up by senior vice president Eddy L. Rodriguez, who has joined Capital Bank from SunTrust. Fort Lauderdale’s commercial team, to be housed at a new location downtown by the fall, is being led by Jeni K. Chokron, a SVP who came over from Bank OZK. Market president Josh Folds is finalizing additional new hires as he expands the bank’s footprint. “It’s been like the NBA’s free agency with attracting the ‘Who’s Who” of bankers in the South Florida region,” explains Folds, who previously was at PNC Bank and began recruiting bankers
in January. “We’re adding financial centers initially in Boca Raton and West Palm Beach.” The Capital Bank strategy is part of a larger growth as the company proceeds on a unification of the brand with parent First Horizon, the fourth largest bank in the Southeast with $40 billion in assets and more than 300 branches. “Our combination of adding the best of the best banking talent from the vibrant South Florida community along with key financial center locations for our business clients will allow us to increase market share significantly,” adds Jeff Jackson, Florida Regional President. “By having these new two dozen highly experienced bankers in place, we are able to provide the highest level of service since all of our loan decision making is done at this local level. We’re also committed to our 155 year tradition of giving back to the community where we live and work.”

confirmed they are in conversation with Virgin Trains, “Representatives will be coordinating through the office staff to set up meetings in the next two weeks (or as soon as possible) with each of the City Council members to discuss the potential for a Brightline Station in Boca Raton on the property east of the Downtown library,” the city said in an email to the Herald.

“We Rock the Spectrum” Hosts Celebration for New Location We Rock the Spectrum – Boca Raton has opened the doors to its brandnew, upgraded location that is double the size of its previous space. To celebrate their success and the opening of this amazing new gym, they will be hosting an event on Sunday, July 21st from 11am to 4pm. The celebration will take place at the new gym at The Boca Hamptons, 9060 Kimberly Blvd, Suite 36 – 39, Boca Raton, FL 33434. We Rock the Spectrum caters to children with special needs and families with children of ALL abilities are encouraged to come enjoy the new gym. Due to the overwhelming popularity of the original location, it became apparent to owners, Gail and John Field, that they had outgrown the space and finding a larger gym was the next best step for their community. It was the first-of-its-kind when the sensory gym introduced itself to the community 5 years ago and continues to break barriers with all the improvements that Gail and John have implemented at this new location. “Our customers always loved how homey our We Rock was, so John and I were afraid going bigger would ruin the effect,” Gail said. “But customers are loving the new space and layout and said that it feels the same – just bigger! We are so excited to have brought this bigger and better location to our community.” Following months of hard work and meticulous planning to make sure the gym was ready for launch, the new location opened its doors on May 27th, 2019. Opening day proved to be a huge success.
www.bocaratontribune.com
Since then, We Rock the Spectrum – Boca Raton has been flooded with camps, parties, and daily Open Play. New and repeat customers have raved of its upgrade and are pleased with all the new additions. “A lot of thought and care went into the design of this location,” said Yesinia Belen, whose daughter has enjoyed celebrating her birthday several times at the We Rock – Boca Raton gym. “The owners exhibit love and compassion to all the families that come into the gym.” The New Location Celebration will be an exciting, fun-filled day set to match the excellence of this new gym. The location will also be home to the east coast Corporate Headquarter offices. To help celebrate this milestone for the franchise, CEO and founder, Dina Kimmel, will be flying in from California with members of her west coast Corporate team. Babula Events will be providing the entertainment, Brett Preiser will be performing, Wonderland Parties will have special guests and characters in attendance, and local vendors and restaurants will be sharing their resources. The celebration is open to children of all abilities. Children will be able to play with all the specialized equipment, including the trampoline, swings, and the zip line. It will be held at The Boca Hamptons Plaza, 9060 Kimberly Blvd, Suite 36 – 39, Boca Raton, FL 33434 from 11 am to 4 pm. Admission is $12 per child, and 20% of the proceeds will go to the My Brother Rocks the Spectrum Foundation.

Palm Beach Atlantic Inks Five Year FAU Unveils Extensive Broadcast Deal With Nike, ADPRO Sports Relationship with Hubbard Radio
The Palm Beach Atlantic University athletics department has inked a five-year deal with ADPRO Sports to remain with apparel brand Nike through the 2023-24 academic year. The partnership extends the relationship between the Sailfish and ADPRO that began in July 2013. All 18 Sailfish varsity programs will be outfitted in Nike uniforms as PBA launches their newest sport, beach volleyball, in the spring. In addition to Nike products the deal outlines specific bonuses for teams as they achieve success on the field or court and also retains academic performance rewards. “We place a high value on our partnerships so when it came time to review our apparel agreement we knew we wanted to renew with Nike to outfit our Sailfish studentathletes in the best uniforms and gear on the market to enhance their experience,” said Courtney Lovely, Palm Beach Atlantic Director of Athletics. “The relationship we have built with ADPRO and Ron Raccuia over the years and their quality of service has been instrumental for us to continue our partnership.” “We are very excited to be continuing our long standing relationship with the great people at PBA, who are committed to providing their studentathletes with an exceptional experience that builds their mind, body and spirit,”
said Jeffrey Diebel, Senior Vice President ADPRO Sports. “ADPRO Sports and the Nike brand are proud to be affiliated with PBA and look forward to celebrating long into the future their on-going successes on the field, on the court, in the classroom and throughout the community.” Palm Beach Atlantic fields teams in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, beach volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and volleyball. Florida Atlantic University Athletics, in collaboration with its multimedia rightsholder, Florida Atlantic Sports Properties, announced today a significant broadcast relationship with Hubbard Radio to provide deeper engagement with fans among seven radio stations, as well as increased coverage within the greater Fort Lauderdale and Miami listening areas. Concurrent with the 2019-20 football season, “640 The Hurricane Sports Radio” (WMEN-AM) will be the Owls’ dedicated flagship station. In addition to airing all football and men’s basketball games, WMEN will carry a one-hour show with Head Football Coach Lane Kiffin and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dusty May each week during the respective seasons. The fiveyear broadcast agreement also calls for 640 The Hurricane Sports Radio to air FAU Update twice weekly during the AM and PM drive. “We are extremely excited to enter into a new partnership with Hubbard Radio, which will make 640 The Hurricane Sports Radio (WMEN-AM) the new flagship radio station for FAU Athletics,” said vice president and director of athletics Brian White. “This new relationship will allow FAU to broaden our reach within Palm Beach and Broward counties which is a priority as we continue to expand the FAU brand both locally and globally.” With seven radio stations under the Hubbard umbrella, there are ample opportunities for cross-promotion, marketing, and branding, which are vital as we continue to grow. White believes this partnership will allow fans, sponsors and supporters a variety of ways to get the latest on what is happening inside FAU Athletics. With this new agreement, it has also ended an incredible nine-year run

for ESPN West Palm flagship run. “We thank ESPN West Palm for the many years of serving as the radio home of FAU Athletics,” added White. “We will continue our longstanding partnership with them in a marketing capacity.” “We’re honored that FAU Athletics and Florida Atlantic Sports Properties have chosen Hubbard Radio’s cluster of seven stations (640 WMEN, 97.9 WRMF,103.1 WIRK, X102.3, News-Talk 850 WFTL, Sunny 107.9 and Beatz 96.3) to help bring the excitement of FAU Football and Basketball to fans across South Florida,” said Elizabeth Hamma, Senior Vice President and Market Manager for Hubbard Radio West Palm Beach. 640-WMEN, the new flagship station for FAU will provide FAU fans with unparalleled access to all football and basketball games with the familiar ‘Voice of FAU Athletics’ Ken LaVicka, Coach Lane Kiffin and Coach Dusty May coaches show as well as daily updates on FAU Athletics. All broadcast aspects are overseen and managed by Florida Atlanta Sports Properties, FAU’s exclusive athletics multimedia rightsholder, and local Learfield IMG College team. “This new relationship will significantly elevate the FAU brand among the other stations’ formats owned by Hubbard Radio to allow for extensive cross-promotion and new presence opportunities,” said Kevin Crossman, general manager of Florida Atlantic Sports Properties. “Everything we do, we align closely with the athletics administration, including how we continually evaluate how we engage with fans, connect with them, and deepen those relationships and experiences.”

Boca Raton FC fall to Tropics SC in UPSL Florida Championship Boca Raton Football Club gave everything they had but were unable to defeat Tropics Soccer Club on Saturday, July 6 at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex falling to the eventual Florida Champions, 3-1. “We played a very good game,” said head coach Jim Rooney. “The team moved the ball well, and we were finding the open man, unfortunately, today we were not on the winning side.” Tropics SC scored early in the seventh minute as Victor Parreiras scored his third goal in as many playoffs games. Boca Raton FC returned the favor 10 minutes later when Gabrel Diniz was able to beat his defender on the dribble to send a beautiful cross to the box that Maher Soua was able to send it to the upper 90 of the goal to tie it all up. Tropics’ Parreiras scored another goal late in the first half to give the home

team the 2-1 lead heading to the locker room. Boca Raton FC turned up the pressure in the second half as they looked for the equalizer. Playing with great possession, Boca Raton FC got close a few times but were unable to capitalize. Tropics got their third goal late in the second half from Ricardo Diegues to give the home side the comfortable 3-1 lead late in the game. Boca Raton FC finishes their inaugural United Premier Soccer League campaign with an overall record of 12-1-3 and the South Florida Championship. “We accomplished our goal for the season,” added Rooney. “When we began the season we wanted to make the playoffs, and we ended up being the South Florida champions, which, for a first season, is a remarkable feat.”
