“Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” John 12:23-25

COMMUNITY Education Foundation Using Grants to Improve Local Schools By: Michael Demyan The Education Foundation of Palm Beach County is trying to make a positive change in area schools. The non-profit organization aims to support the public education system through partnerships and grants, while counting on help from local businesses, so that children are able to reach their highest potential in life. “Our job is to connect the business community to the world of education,” Education Foundation president and CEO James Gavrilos said. “When you look at all of the hoops that Amazon is making people jump through as they try to get their second headquarters, one that just jumps off the page to me is they want 50,000 trained workers. If you want 50,000 trained workers to open up a headquarters, you better have a first class education system.” Hundreds of thousands of dollars are put into Palm Beach County school programs every year thanks to the Education Foundation. Gavrilos explained that there are three main buckets of funding that make this possible. The first is what he calls the large bucket, which offers grants ranging from roughly $40,000-$60,000. The state awards a certain amount of money that is matched dollar for dollar with local dollars. For example, if a school wants to start a program that costs $50,000 and a local funder decided to give $25,000, the Education Foundation could match that amount with state money and the program would be completely funded. Gavrilos noted that the Education Foundation was able to help out Pahokee Middle School principal Dwayne Dennard, who wished to start a robotics program for his students. “This man is an absolute hero in our community,” Gavrilos said. “He started a robotics program with the idea that we can take some of these kids and get them thinking about careers in science. We now have 50 kids participating
in the robotics program. We really try to fund programs that are created by very innovative and dynamic teachers that are going to touch children and get them to think about careers they would never think about.” The second bucket is Go Teach, which is funded by the purchases of an education license plate in the state of Florida. It awards grants up to around $1,500 for some smaller projects and during 2017, the Education awarded 45 grants totalling $52,000. The third soure of funding is through Find It Fund It. Teachers are able to go to their website to get funding for their projects through crowdsourcing. “For lack of a better term, it’s GoFundMe for schools,” Gavrilos said. Gavrilos is also very excited about the Red Apple Supplies store, which started two years ago in response to teachers using hundreds of dollars of their own money to buy supplies for their students. The store is currently working with 32 different schools in Palm Beach County so that teachers can grab necessary supplies for the classroom. The supplies come through supply drives from local businesses as well as through donations from places such as Office Depot and the Kids in Need Foundation. In only the two years since the Red Apple Supplies store started, they have distributed over $200,000 worth of merchandise. After spending a little less than a decade with Boca Helping Hands, when superintendent Robert Avossa asked Gavrilos to be a part of the Education Foundation, he said he just could not turn it down because of the importance of helping the youth getting the education they need to have a successful life. “I spent the last eight years of my life at Boca Helping Hands trying to help people who are in poverty,” he said. “What if we could get them before they’re in poverty?”

Barbara Pierce Bush: Her Enduring Legacy Will Serve to Inspire Others She was one of the feistiest yet dignified first ladies we have had in years. And to the end of her long and eventful life, Barbara Pierce Bush, 92, the wife of the 41st president and the mother of the 43rd, faced her failing health with courage and grit. When I heard the news on Sunday that she decided to spend her final days in her home surrounded by loved ones – instead of in a hospital bed - I said that was so indicative of her characteristic candor. Mrs. Bush, who served in the White House between 1989 and 1993, embodied strength, grace, and dedication to family and faith. She was very involved, particularly in serving others. A tireless advocate for volunteerism, she helped countless charities and humanitarian causes during her years in public life. As first lady, she was famous for her quest to make sure that everyone can read. Since she left the White House 25
years ago, she continued that work with The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, which has raised more than a billion dollars for charity. There were a few things I like about Mrs. Bush. Among them was that she had a lot of integrity. She reminded me so much of former Britain’s Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. She was gracious, not glamorous. And as she walked the world stage as wife of the most powerful leader, she left political matters to her husband of 73 years. Still, beneath her grandmotherly aura, she maintained a stand by your man stance. In fact, cross her the wrong way or say something not nice about her sons and I am sure you would have experienced her blistering wrath. She also had a tart tongue, which occasionally got her in trouble. I recall in 1984 when she said she could not reveal the term she would use to describe Democratic vice presidential nominee Geraldine Ferraro, “but
it rhymes with rich.” Ferraro had campaigned against her husband as Walter Mondale’s vice-presidential running mate. Not once to mince words, her sage advice to high-powered young women at Wellesley College during their 1990 commencement, will long be remembered. “Cherish your human connections: your relationships with family and friends,” she told them. “You’ve had impressed upon you the importance to your career of dedication and hard work. And, of course, that’s true. But as important as your obligations as a doctor, a lawyer, a business leader will be, you are a human being first. And those human connections ... are the most important investments you will ever make.” After congratulating them, she added: “At the end of life, you will never regret not having passed one more test, winning one more verdict, or not closing one more deal. You will regret
time not spent with a husband, a child, a friend or a parent.” Let us face it, “Barbs” did not try to be something she was not. She was human and I admired that in her. I will always admire her heart for children and her desire to improve the lives of others. The 1989 photos of her cradling H.I.V.infected infants at a home she visited in Washington, as well as an infected adult man is still etched in my memory. This was at a time of irrational fear about the spread of HIV/AIDS. Her action sent a powerful message of compassion, love and acceptance. Mrs. Bush and I shared a passion for literacy, education, and service to others. It is humbling to know that we have traveled the same path of dedicating so much of our lives to the issues we care deeply about. Those fond memories, among others, will live on long after she leaves this world.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Make Finishing Well Your Aim! When you come to the end of your earthly journey, what monuments shall you leave behind to impact others? How many altars shall you have erected to celebrate your own fruitfulness in your lifetime? Will you have real fruit to show or only leaves to display? These questions are raised because all human creatures are placed on earth for a variety of reasons, with each individual wired uniquely to fulfill specific purposes. To that end, three actions are expected of everyone: to make decisions, to make progress, and to make a difference. Any individual is capable of doing all three. Obviously, this is not what appears in the report card at the conclusion of a person’s earthly pilgrimage. Many people may go
through life in its entirety without being able to make any meaningful decision, and though several attempt it, some often do it wrongly. Quite a few are incapable of advancing in any direction, about anything. Moreover, making a difference is something which not many consider, and fewer yet make it real. All humans are called upon to travel the path assigned to each. But since humans are social creatures, their paths always intersect with those of others, so that experiences may be shared, examples may be emulated, and mutual encouragement exchanged. Any activity for which proper planning occurs at every step of the way has every reason to succeed. Yet, any period of glory
is not guaranteed to be maintained indefinitely; past achievements are not necessarily today’s reality, much less tomorrow’s performance. One needs to make decisive provisions for the continuing success of an enterprise, since one may be taken away from its production and command at any time. Many stop at peak performance and, then, reach a plateau from which a decline can easily emerge. In my lifetime I have repeatedly observed how many individuals quickly descended from hero to zero; they lacked staying power, many were devoid of a moral compass, with several also destitute of common sense, people skills, and the additional resources which can ensure victory
at the finishing line. Throughout life, gains do not necessarily define you, just as losses should not diminish anyone. The essential factor is to know who you are, with all the assets and limitations which every individual possesses; to recognize barriers not as the end of the line, but merely as signposts to better things still ahead if you proceed amidst all challenges! Plan to finish well, for anyone can. Just follow this sound advice I once read: “Do the very best you can with what you have, where you are now!” God will do the rest and ensure triumph at last!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

A.D. Henderson University School and Florida Atlantic University High School announced a $1 million gift today from Daniel Cane, CEO and co-founder of Modernizing Medicine, and his wife, Debra Cane. The gift will establish The Cane Institute for Advanced Technologies at Henderson/ FAU High, which will serve as the school’s epicenter for research, education and technology transfer. “We are so very grateful for the Cane’s generous gift to A.D. Henderson University School and FAU High School,” said Joel Herbst, Ed.D., assistant dean, PK-12 Schools and Educational Programs at FAU. “For an entrepreneur like Mr. Cane to recognize our unique educational platform and delivery model as a worthy program to invest in and understand the school’s potential to transform public education, serves as significant third-party validation.” The Cane’s gift marks the first for the A.D. Henderson and FAU High School’s capital campaign, “Let’s Build This Together.” This campaign aims to coalesce private and public support to construct a new, state-of-the-art facility for the Henderson/FAU High complex to further enhance a world-class educational model. In particular, this gift will support science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education at the Title 1 school. The Institute’s integrated approach will allow students and faculty at the high school to explore today’s most complex challenges in arenas such as cybersecurity, autonomous vehicles, robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality, automation and artificial intelligence. “The quality of education that the faculty and staff at Henderson and FAU High provide will prepare our children and other students for a lifetime of success,” said Daniel Cane. “This gift will build on the already stellar program and hopefully encourage other parents and supporters of STEM
and public education to contribute and help raise the profile of South Florida’s world-class schools.” In 2010, Cane co-founded Modernizing Medicine, a healthcare IT company that is revolutionizing the way in which healthcare information is created, consumed and utilized to increase practice efficiency and improve patient outcomes. Cane has led his team to raise more than $332 million in total investment, through two acquisitions and to employ more than 650 professionals. Modernizing Medicine is frequently recognized both nationally and regionally for its achievements under his leadership, including being named one of Fastest Growing Companies in North America on the Deloitte Technology Fast 500™ list in 2016 and 2017. Cane earned a Bachelor of Science degree in applied economics from Cornell University, where, as an undergraduate, he co-founded Blackboard Inc., raised more than $100 million in venture capital and, in 2004, helped take the company public on the NASDAQ (BBBB). In 2011, Blackboard sold for $1.6 billion. Named to the “South Florida Ultimate CEO” list by the South Florida Business Journal in 2016, Cane also was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year® in 2015. In 2014, the Sun Sentinel named Cane as the Excalibur Awards’ Palm Beach Small Business Leader of the Year for 2013. Active in the local community, Cane is a former member and vice chair of FAU’s Board of Trustees. He currently serves as the vice chair of the board at the South Florida Science Center and is on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Palm Beach County. He also is an active mentor to entrepreneurs and a member of the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce and several local advisory boards.

Boca Raton-Based TEN Spring Water on the Path to Becoming National Brand By: Michael Demyan Jose Fernandez is on his way to making his Boca Raton-based TEN Spring Water a national brand. It all started in 2011 when Fernandez sold his previous business and thought about what his next step in life would be. A friend introduced him to alkaline waters for their health benefits, but he was not a big fan of how they tasted, so he started to research the market. After a year of research, TEN Spring Water was officially launched in the summer of 2013. “Most people don’t make it past year one or two. I’ve made it past year four [as the company’s CEO] last year and now I’m in year number five so, something must be okay,” Fernandez said, followed by a laugh. Fernandez said that one of the biggest things that makes TEN different than other alkaline waters is that it is sourced directly from natural springs, rather than using tap water. “We only use natural spring sources,” he said. “So imagine when you go and buy bottled water that says ‘spring water.’ That basically means it comes straight from a spring, into the plant, goes through filtration and into the bottle. So what I’m doing is basically taking that same spring through filtration, adding a patented pH formula of two minerals and raising the pH of that spring water to 10.0.” Currently, TEN water comes
from three different springs, but Fernandez already has plans to use more as the company continues to grow. As it becomes closer to becoming a national brand, numerous professional athletes, such as Carolina Panthers defensive end Mario Addison, Los Angeles Clippers center Willie Reed and UFC World Champion Amanda Nunes, have even endorsed the water. The best part, Fernandez said, is that they do not even approach the athletes. It is the athletes who are coming to them. They have found the water on store shelves and personally want to endorse it. Simply getting the water to those shelves was not an easy task either. “To prove that you have a brand to get Publix to take you on, you have to go through a proof of concept to make sure you really have a brand,” Fernandez said. “Publix is not a company that takes a chance on a small company, with a brand new product.” Since then, Publix began selling one gallon jugs toward the end of last year, which has quickly become TEN’s biggest seller. The water is also sold online as well as through stores such as Food Lion. Fernandez, who has called Boca Raton his home for 24 years, is also going after more major chains across the country, including H-E-B, Kroger and Meijer. “Once you start drinking this water, you really don’t want to drink any other brand,” Fernandez said.

Overcoming Toxic Anger Years ago, my boss at the time appointed me to chair a taskforce to address a major problem in our company. For me, this became a political landmine, a classic no-win situation. My boss was likely hoping I would protect him from the possible fallout of the taskforce’s decision, but I did not. In its findings, the taskforce concluded the real issue was my boss’s approach to the problem we had been researching. Soon after my report was finalized and submitted, I received a demotion. My boss, who had been an advocate for me, became my enemy. For more than two years I fostered a toxic anger towards him. I felt unjustly treated and maligned. I had become the scapegoat for a problem of my boss’s own making. Seeking to strike back and gain a measure of revenge, every time I had an opportunity, I bad-mouthed this man to others. After carrying this weight of anger and bitterness, with no hope of the executive ever offering to correct the wrong he had done to me, I came to a startling, yet freeing realization: My anger had been hurting me much more than it had affected him. Even if my negative comments succeeded in diminishing my boss in the eyes of others, my anger was not appeased. Then I began to do something I should have considered much sooner – I determined to read, meditate on, and apply what the Bible teaches about anger, justified or not. For instance, Ephesians 4:26 teaches, “Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.” Thinking about his exhortation, it occurred to me that the sun had literally
gone down on my anger hundreds of times, and the festering bitterness I had continued to feel was giving the devil ample opportunity to undermine what God was trying to do in me and through me. Then I began pondering Matthew 6:15-16, in which Jesus states, “For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.” Those were hard words to read; as I pointed an accusing finger toward my one-time boss, it seemed the other fingers on my hand were pointing back at me. Pondering this, the Lord convicted me that since I had not forgiven my former boss, why should I expect God to forgive me for my many sins? I realized that in addition to forgiving my ex-boss – even if he never asked for it – I also needed to ask God to forgive me for many things, including my unforgiving spirit. To determine what God wanted me to do next, I read Matthew 5:23-24, in which Jesus says, “Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.” More than two years since my anger began, I finally started the process of reconciliation by calling my former boss – and asking his forgiveness. That did not fix what he had done, but at last I was free of the toxic anger and its devastating effects. Anger is an emotional cancer whose cure is forgiveness.

TOTAL HEALTH By Alan Attaman
What Fuel’s You? So I’ve been on my “Motivation Playlist” kick that I put together a few weeks ago for the Immersion Program on iTunes and I can’t seem to stop listening. Why? Oh it’s good. Real good. The positive, fueling and inspirational words on so many different topics and thoughts we all have are just so well put together. The background sound and speed and voices draw you in and next thing you know you no longer just hear the voice as a voice, but now as yourself telling yourself these words as you’re your own speaker and igniting your own fire. Trust me. It’s not some boring podcast or speaker just talking. It’s different. It’s healthy. It’s needed. Like if it was Sylvester Stallone and I auditing for Rocky and I heard this playlist before going on, and he didn’t actually write the script, I’m pretty sure I would have won the role! One of the tracks though that I felt had one of the best topics and outlooks was the one on “WHAT FUEL’S YOU”. Things such as Money, Cars, and Clothes could have been proper answers here. But it went deeper than that. It was very awaking to hear, because the things said probably do fuel us but not sure we think about them in the manner of which they speak of. **But 3 Things that Fuel us spoken of in the track were...** 1) “No” – Yup, “No”. Being told “No” or “You Can’t” fuels me. Excites me. Pushes me. Makes me want it more. Does it for you? Does others doubt or rejection fuel you to press forward harder and stronger with more ambition and want to succeed more than before? “You’re not going get up early and get it done before…..” -- “You won’t be able to make it happen because…….” -- “It’s just not believable to do because….” -- “It just can’t be done”. Oh the excitement. Oh the reward is going be that much better. Just because THEY don’t think it can be done doesn’t mean it can’t. It just means they don’t think THEY can do it. Not your problem. Let the Naysayers keep saying. You can’t put out fire with fire, which is awesome, because that’s not your objective, you want a bigger fire!
2) My Why- Why I do what I do. What I envision. What I am trying to accomplish. The outcome. The final product. The smiles. The changes. The thank you’s. Those are the things that fuel me. Not the extrinsic motivators, those will come, but the intrinsic motivators is what I strive for. The things people will talk about and remember me for when it’s all over. What Is Your Why? Why do you do it? What are you grinding for? What have you set out to achieve? That is your why. Your purpose should fuel you. Your reason should fuel you. What is your fuel? You know your why, you know your situation, you know what you want, you know how to achieve it, and that is all the fuel you need if you want it. 3) Being Better Than YesterdayBetter at what? Anything. Everything. All the things. Growth is awesome. Stimulation is awesome. Learning is awesome. I want all that, and with achievement of those things, I become better. Better for myself and better for others. People who may be in search for what I’ve become better at. I want to be called upon for help and questions. I want to be seeked for guidance and direction. I want others to come to me because they know there is no one better. For that, I need to be better; continuously. If I can walk away better today than yesterday, and tomorrow than today, then that continuously is fueling. With so much inside of us that we want to do and accomplish, why aren’t we setting out to do them? Why are so many of us waking up in the morning and right away are already thinking about when we will be going back to bed? We wake up, and want to go back to bed. Why? Just like a car. No Fuel? No movement. So let’s load up our tanks with what fuels us and let’s achieve things. Let’s do things. See things. Create things. Accomplish things we may not see as being possible even though we haven’t even tried. Not for the money, but for you. Use your fuel for you and let’s see how far it can take you. With a full tank of fuel, there’s no telling how far we will get!

SPORTS Boca Raton FC Signs College Duo Ahead of 2018 NPSL Season
With less than three weeks until the home opener on May 5th versus Miami United, Boca Raton FC is excited to announce the additions of Gabriel Diniz and Filip Guhr to the 2018 NPSL squad. Diniz comes to Boca Raton FC from Stetson University where the 5’9 forward has played since 2016. In his freshman season, Diniz was named to the ASUN All-Freshman Team, and also ranked second on the team in goals and points. The 20-year-old scored the game-winning goal in season-opening 2-1 win at VCU and followed that up with assists in each of the next two games, at Old Dominion and Georgia Southern. As a freshman, Diniz played 1142 minutes, including 90 or more minutes three times. “I’m very thankful and excited about this opportunity to play at Boca Raton FC,” said Diniz. “I look forward to working my hardest to improve and help the team.” “Diniz is a proven goalscorer and a dynamic player we have been looking for,” said head coach Jim Rooney. “The competition this summer will be tough and having more than one proven goalscorer on the team will help us tremendously.” Guhr comes to Boca Raton FC from the University of Pennsylvania.
April 20 - April 26, 2018
Prior to playing at the University of Pennsylvania, Guhr played at Boca Prep and Team Boca. A local through and through, the 6’1 defender was a varsity letter winner at Boca Prep and played his club soccer for Team Boca where he won four soccer championships including the Disney Showcase and IMG Boys Invitational Cup, CASL Showcase, the Kukkonio Cup in Slovakia, and the Potomac Memorial in Maryland. “I’m excited to join Boca Raton FC because it gives me a way to represent my city,” said Guhr. “I’ve heard many positive things about the club and I look forward to joining head coach Jim Rooney and the entire club this summer.” “Guhr is a bonafide defender who is game ready and can play the second he returns from college,” added Rooney. “We have a very strong defense and with the addition of Guhr we might have one of the most solid ones in the league.” Single game tickets, as well as season ticket packages for Boca Raton FC’s 2018 NPSL Season at Atlantic High School, are available now. Single game tickets start as low as $10, and season tickets start at $40. For more information, please visit www.bocaratonfc.com/tickets.
Carly Scarbrough Named To CCSA All-Academic Team
Florida Atlantic University beach volleyball player Carly Scarbrough has been named to the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) All-Academic Team, the league announced on Wednesday. She currently holds a flawless 4.0 GPA while majoring in biological sciences. Scarbrough, originally from Sarasota, Florida, has won nine different matches with three different partners, seven of those wins coming alongside Amanda Silva at the top of the Owls’ lineup, including a straight-set victory over the No. 1 pair from 18th-ranked Tu-
lane. Scarbrough has won 17 matches at FAU since transferring from Fresno State. “It is an honor and a privilege to receive this recognition, especially because the CCSA encompasses so many prestigious universities and brilliant minds,” said Scarbrough. “I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge and thank the coaching staff and the academic advisors here at FAU for their tremendous support.” The Sandy Owls are the No. 8 seed for the CCSA Tournament and will begin pool play against top-seeded Florida State at noon Eastern on Friday.
Brous Tabbed to USILA Division II Team of the Week Lynn University lacrosse sophomore Dryden Brous continues to pick up the awards this week as the Fighting Knight has been selected to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Team of the Week, as announced by the organization on Tuesday. Brous is the third Fighting Knight this season to be picked to the USILA’s Team of the Week, joining Nick Howard and Xander Cosenza. It was another week at the office for Brous, the team’s faceoff specialist, who had two more huge performances as the Fighting Knights split their pair of SSC contests. The Blue and White first routed Palm Beach Atlantic at home, 21-4, before falling in the final seconds at No. 6 Saint Leo, 11-10. For the week, Brous took 43 draws, winning 37, for an incredible 86.0
www.bocaratontribune.com
faceoff-winning percentage. He also picked up 32 ground balls, averaging 16 per game. Against the Sailfish, Brous went 18-for-19 on faceoffs while adding a game-high 15 ground balls and his fourth goal of the season. At Saint Leo, he had another phenomenal day at the faceoff X, taking all 24 draws in the game and winning 19. He did almost all of the work himself, picking up 17 ground balls. Brous’ 17 ground balls ties his own program record set earlier this season vs. Florida Southern. His 19 faceoff wins are four shy of his own school record and are tied for fourth-most in a game all-time. For the season, Brous now leads the country in ground balls per game (11.27) and ranks second in the nation in faceoff winning percentage (78.2).
