• The Florida Atlantic University College of Engineering and Computer Science (COECS) Human-Powered Submarine (HPS) team placed third overall at the fourth biennial European International Submarine Race (eISR) at Haslar in Gosport, England.

• The School District of Palm Beach County is an A-rated district, and has the highest number of District-operated “A” schools when compared with other large urban school districts. According to preliminary school grades released Wednesday by the Florida Department of Education, the District ranks highest in Florida on total number of points earned when compared with other large urban districts. The District also was highest among its peer districts in math achievement, science achievement, math learning gains for all students, and high school graduation rate.

• The Palm Beach State College Foundation has been awarded $40,000 for the second year in a row from the Ibis Friends of Veterans Charitable Organization, Inc. to support student veterans at the College. The donation will be used toward scholarships and book stipends. One student recipient, Joseph Morel, was not only a veteran but also a first-generation college student when he received an Ibis scholarship award.

The Spirit of Giving’s 10th Annual Back to School Bash, an event that aims to prepare at-risk children in our community with the tools they need to succeed for the upcoming school year. At the event, students are empowered to select their own backpacks and grade-appropriate supplies, uniforms, and shoes. In addition, haircuts, physicals, health screenings and access to medical resources and community information are provided.

• Palm Beach County schools will be closed on Tuesday, August 28, after the School Board approved a revision to the 20182019 school calendar. August 28 is Primary Election Day in Florida, and many School District of Palm Beach County schools are used as polling places. The School Board

Community FAU Places No. 1 In Florida For R.N. Licensure Exam

Lynn College of Nursing placed in the No. 1 spot in Florida for the 71 graduates of its Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program who achieved a 100 percent passage rate on the NCLEX. The graduates performed above the national average passage rate of 90.05 percent; they are now registered nurses.

“We are very excited to be listed in the No. 1 spot in this report and we are in great company with other Florida public schools of nursing who are performing better than the national average in preparing their graduates to achieve licensure status,” said Marlaine Smith, Ph.D., dean of FAU’s College of Nursing. “Achieving a 100 percent passage rate by our graduates is a testament to our innovative and rigorous program, as well as our highly accomplished faculty and scholars who are instrumental in ensuring that the next generation of nurses in Florida succeed.”

In 2017, the Florida Legislature directed the Florida Center for Nursing to evaluate nursing education programspecific data for each approved program and accredited program in the state related to graduate passage rates on the NCLEX. The Florida Center for Nursing recently published the report for calendar year 2017.

Of the 353 nursing programs

in Florida, 24 percent are public and 76 percent are classified as private.

When comparing public to private schools, the statewide average passage rate for public bachelor degree schools was 91.19 percent. Seven public universities in the Florida State University System (SUS) ranked above the national average passage rate.

There were 50 bachelor degree programs, of which 20 (40 percent) achieved an average passage rate higher than the national average. Eleven (22 percent) of the programs ranked above the 10 percent of the national standard, leaving 19 (38 percent) of the bachelor degree programs with passage rates that were 10 percent below the national average. The statewide percentage of exam takers who passed the NCLEX (87.16 percent) is lower than the national average passage rate of 90.05 percent and higher than the required standard of 10 percent below the national average (80.05 percent). Data include only first-time test takers who took the exam within six months of graduation.

Five of the six candidates running for office in the August 28 special Election in Boca Raton have confirmed their presence at The Boca Raton Tribune Candidate Forums that will take place on August 17 and 24.

All Seat A Candidates, Andy Thomson, Kathy Cottrell, and Tamara McKee have confirmed their presence for the Seat A forum on August 17 at the Boca Raton Community Center. Boca Regional Chief Nursing Officer Appointed As President Of The Nursing Consortium Of South Florida

Melissa Durbin, RN, MSN, NEA-BC, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Boca Raton Regional Hospital has been appointed as President of the Nursing Consortium of South Florida.

As President of the Consortium, Durbin will lead the organization in uniting community leaders to address the region’s shortage of qualified nursing staff. Her primary responsibilities include increasing interest in nursing among middle and high school students, improving the public perception of nursing and advocating for greater funding for nursing education.

“It’s an honor and my pleasure to be at the helm of an organization that shares my passion for the nursing profession,” said Melissa Durbin. “Florida faces a serious nursing shortage issue and the Consortium will develop and implement long-term strategies to ensure our community has access to qualified nurses.”

At Boca Regional, Ms. Durbin is responsible for all nursing and other

patient care functions and services.

She manages the assessment, planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of nursing practices on a facility level, and is accountable for ensuring high quality, safe and appropriate nursing care, competency of clinical staff and effective resource management.

The Consortium’s mission is to strengthen relationships between nurses in practice and academic settings, to identify and address opportunities for strengthening the nursing community, and to ensure adequate access to high quality ever improving nursing services.

According to the Florida Center of Nursing, demand for nursing personnel is projected to increase dramatically as Florida’s large Baby Boom cohort reaches typical ages for retirement and begins to require more care for age-related conditions. At the same time, more than 40% of Florida’s nurses are approaching retirement age within the next 10 years and there are not enough younger nurses to replace them.

Extraordinary Nonprofit Serving as Bridge to Address Food Insecurity

The Rev. Dan West knows that hiding in the shadow of Palm Beach County’s ranking as one of the five most affluent counties in Florida, is a dark problem affecting residents: food insecurity.

He’ll tell you that Florida ranks 12th in the country for food deprivation, that more than 710,000 South Floridians have no clue where their next meal will come from, and even worse, right here in our county, 60,390 children go to bed hungry every night.

Realizing that hunger does not take a day off, Pastor Dan, as he is affectionately called, says he cannot afford to take a break either.

“There is a great need out here in the world and we are doing God’s work,” says Pastor Dan, a man of integrity who founded Restoration

Bridge International in 2005 to feed the area’s needy.

He uses his platform as president of the ministry to put a dent in the food shortage in our community by bringing hope to hurting people.

Each day, from as early as daybreak, his cadre of volunteers pick up donated food from several local grocers and retail partners such as Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Publix, Target, Costco Wholesale and Whole Foods in vans and trucks.

They then sort and pack them in banana boxes at their central distribution site west of Lantana.

Another group delivers them to individuals, families, and their nonprofit partners across the county.

They have not skipped a beat in addressing this amazing feat since

they began their mission. Their role is often taken for granted and they do a masterful job.

It is not unusual to see Pastor Dan out picking up food or sorting food at the warehouse.

Last year, Restoration Bridge gave away 5 million pounds of food through its warehouse and its satellite sites in partnership with other agencies.

One of the recipients is Arms of Hope Community, Inc., a Lake Worth-based nonprofit that serves meals and offers social services.

Restoration Bridge is also helping in the war against child hunger in Palm Beach County’s schools. Each week the organization gives food to KOP Mentoring Network, a Delray Beach-based

nonprofit, to help students who might otherwise go hungry. The organization provides the children and their parents with food for the weekends.

Even with the great work Pastor Dan is doing, Restoration Bridge has some challenges. With the increase in demand for food comes a need for more help with daily operations and volunteers are hard to find. They always need help for at least four hours on specific day(s) of the week. They also desperately need drivers with CDL licenses daily from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The organization also needs a refrigerated truck as the one they own is broken and costs an arm and a leg to repair, officials say.

Better Challenges Await You!

For many years, long ago, I daily carried in my shirt pocket, a card with a significant saying I had learned, and wanted to memorize. Every day I would put that card in my pocket so that wherever I might be, I could re-read it and gradually have it committed to memory. That’s precisely what happened, and daily I am still impacted as I remember those words.

The message on the card simply stated: “I’d rather to attempt to do something great and fail, than attempt to do nothing, and succeed!” Pretty good, and very well-stated! That idea further expanded my own thinking into formulating a parallel thought, which

stresses that we have been challenged to soar like eagles, though too many appear to prefer the rat race.

Thinking further, I came to the sound conclusion of what I’ve shared with several people in a variety of settings and circumstances. It just challenges any hearer, “You need not stay where you are!” In other words, life offers us many challenges and opportunities, but only by taking risks can we attain something great. While some people due to laziness, or lack of creativity, prefer to suffer inconveniences where they already are, rather than be responsive to sound openings they become aware of, in which they might excel far more than

where they are. Moving forward and looking upward are the keys!

In these pages, as well as in many of my talks to a variety of groups, I have introduced many to words I adopted as my life’s motto. These did not originate in my own thinking, but come from the diaries of the great Scottish explorer, medical doctor, and Christian missionary in the 19th century in Africa. That particular entry in his journals, expresses a most valid, wise plan to lead anyone ahead in life. Dr. David Livingstone eloquently reported: “I am prepared to go anywhere, as long as it is forward.” And his life effectively illustrated that effecive principle.

Anyone today, in far better conditions than the old Scot faced in his day, can attempt the same, and rejoice at the positive results that thought can inspire and deliver. Wherever we may be in life, whatever may be our geographical location, the preferred action is always positive movement in a forward direction! We are entitled to look to the past, though in most instances it is not to return there permanently, but just to examine what it can teach us, while we proceed at a pace, and in a direction that will offer new challenges and lead us into welcoming new adventures!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

A beautiful well done show with an incredible group of dancers and beautiful scenery. After the show we moved on to the Boca Marriott for an after theater party with the cast. Unconventional Strategies

In the 1880s, entrepreneur Henry Crowell bought an oat mill to produce feed for horses. Even though Crowell had high expectations when he started, the business was struggling and he resolved to turn to God in prayer, seeking a creative solution for his business woes. He had run out of ideas for expanding his horse feed enterprise.

In answer to his prayers, God led Henry to embark of an concept that few people, if any, had ever imagined.

Crowell would change his “market” for oats, beginning to sell his oats to people – as a breakfast cereal. This was an unconventional strategy, because oats were traditionally sold from insect-infested barrels in general stores as horse feed. No reasonable human being would want to buy oats infested with bugs!

Selling oats for human consumption seemed foolish at best, crazy at worst, and Crowell’s critics were having a good laugh at his expense. However, again in response to his prayers, God gave him another idea: He would design a cardboard box that could be filled with rolled oats to place on grocery store shelves. The cardboard boxes would be sealed, impenetrable to the insects that would desire to devour the oats as food.

Today, Crowell’s enterprise has become prominent in the food retailing world and is widely known as Quaker Oats. The company now sells not only oats and oatmeal, but a variety of other cereals and food products. All because he was unable to sell enough oats for horse feed!

Too often, we try to face our business challenges alone, determined to rely on our own innovation and ingenuity.

This, the Bible tells us, is true foolishness when we can call on the wisdom

and resources of the Creator God. As Proverbs 16:9 says, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” To state it another way, many times we find ourselves inclined to think, “I know what I need to do. I’ve got this,” while God is waiting for us to ask so He can respond, “I have a much better idea.”

Here is some more wisdom from the Scriptures:

Do not insist on figuring everything out. Sometimes in our pride, arrogance or stubbornness, we feel we must understand exactly what we must do and why. God, however, has a different perspective: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Commit your work to God and trust He will guide you. Ibis Friends Support PBSC Veterans From Boots to Books

The Palm Beach State College Foundation has been awarded $40,000 for the second year in a row from the Ibis Friends of Veterans Charitable Organization, Inc. to support student veterans at the College.

The donation will be used toward scholarships and book stipends.

One student recipient, Joseph Morel, was not only a veteran but also a first-generation college student when he received an Ibis scholarship award.

“The scholarship was a blessing, as I am the first in my family to attend college in over five generations,” said Morel, who is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “Words will never be able to sum up what a privilege and honor it is to have received the scholarship award.”

The donation, which was presented at the Ibis Golf & Country Club, is the latest in a series of gifts by the organization over the past four years bringing their total amount of PBSC giving to $140,000. The donation comes on the heels of the College opening its doors to its new 2,206-square-foot Veterans Success Center located in VSC 100 on the Lake Worth campus.

“The board members of the Ibis Friends of Veterans, the volunteers and the residents support student veterans at Palm Beach State to show our sincere gratitude to the men and women who have put their lives on the line defending our freedoms,” said Chairman Harvey

Gingold, who has been a 13-year resident of Ibis Golf & Country Club and has served on the Ibis Friends of Veterans board for the past four years. “We hope that they can meet their educational goals and build a better life for themselves and their families.”

The $40,000, which was presented last week, came from a larger donation of $145,000 collected from the organization’s annual golf tournament and divided among the PBSC Foundation, the Stand Down House, Wounded Veterans Relief Fund and Paws 4 Liberty.

“The College has a reputation of supporting its veterans. However, because of the Ibis Friends of Veterans continued annual support, we have been able to take that support to a new level,” said Matthew Watkins, veteran affairs coordinator at Palm Beach State. “It has not only helped us bring more resources to our veterans but has helped the College increase veteran student enrollment and support college-wide.”

Last year, there were 70 book stipends and 22 scholarships awarded to deserving student veterans using the Ibis Friends of Veterans donation funds. The Ibis Friends of Veterans was established in 2012 by Bruce Gamradt and other veteran supporters residing in Ibis Golf & Country Club.

Palm Beach State also has veteran centers on the Palm Beach Gardens and Boca Raton campuses.

Meet Your Boca Raton City Council Seat A Candidates By: Michael Demyan

Andy Thomson Andy Thomson will be running against Kathryn Cottrell and Tamara McKee for City Council Seat A in the upcoming election on Aug. 28. The seat will be vacated by Scott Singer, who is currently serving as Boca Raton’s interim mayor since Susan Haynie was suspended after her arrest in April.

This will not be Thomson’s first attempt at running for a seat on the Boca Raton City Council, as he did so unsuccessfully last year.

Thomson earned his degree in electrical engineering at Georgia Tech and received his J.D. at the University of Miami School of Law. He currently practices business litigation with Baritz & Colman and helps resolve business disputes.

Along with his job at the Boca Raton law firm, Thomson has also been active within the community, including serving as the vice-chair on the city’s Education Task Force, where he has asked city council to add school security to the task force and has advocated to build a new school on Spanish River Boulevard and Military Trail to alleviate overcrowding.

“People want their kids educated in these great schools,” he said.

“Over time, we’ve seen a very significant increase, just like we have in the cars on the road, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of students in schools.”

The planned school, which would be for kindergarten through eighth grade, would first be used for students who attend Addison Mizner Elementary as it is rebuilt on its current

property. After construction on the elementary school is completed, the new school would be used to help Boca’s growing overcrowding issue in schools.

“Though they’ve tried, the Palm Beach County School District hasn’t been able to plan sufficiently ahead of [the desire to send children to Boca schools] and what we are ending up with are schools that are very, very crowded,” Thomson said.

Schools are not the only things that are overcrowded in Boca though, according to Thomson. The roadways are as well.

“We’re kind of victims of our own success,” he said. “You make an attractive place to live, people want to come here. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do anything about the traffic and I have a background in fixing problems related to traffic.”

Thomson said that his background of transportation planning and traffic studies at a civil engineering firm would make him best suited for the job of improving traffic issues throughout the city.

“I was the guy out on the ground doing the study to figure out how best to address congestion on our roads or better time the lights at intersections,” he said.

He currently thinks that Singer has done well after being thrust into a difficult situation, but after Haynie’s suspension, which he considers to be “a black eye on our city,” public trust of the government will inevitably go down. He feels that as a member of the Boca Raton City Council, he will be able to use his skills to lower divisiveness among the members.

“You best handle conflict not by arguing or by finger pointing or by yelling, but by working collaboratively – by working together – by trying to find common ground, and that’s what I do day in and day out.”

Kathy Cottrell will be running against Tamara McKee and Andy Thomson for City Council Seat A in the upcoming election on Aug. 28. The seat will be vacated by interim Mayor Scott Singer, who will be attempting to keep the new role he took after Susan Haynie’s arrest in April.

Cottrell has spent much of her life in Boca Raton and is a graduate of Boca Raton High School. From there, she attended Lynn University before getting her bachelor of science degree in news editing and reporting at the University of Florida. She later went on to pursue her master’s degree in public policy at California State University and a doctorate in psychology at the California School of Professional Psychology.

She was once an investigative researcher and case analyst for the FBI in Miami and has since been involved with the community through the Zoning Board of Adjustment and the Boca Raton Community Advisory Panel.

After leaving her last job two years ago, Cottrell has been attending numerous city council meetings in order to get re-educated on the issues surrounding the city and its residents.

“I think it’s important to get involved and know what’s going on in your hometown, especially if you want to give back and hope to see change,” she said.

Part of that change is more transparency in the local government, which has become more widely discussed after Haynie’s arrest and suspension from her role as mayor.

“I would like to see us do as

much as we possibly can to ensure we have as much transparency as possible in terms of making the issues that are coming in front of us available.”

One of the main issues Cottrell is focused on is quality of life in Boca Raton, along with improving services and amenities. She said that she has heard concerns from residents regarding overdevelopment, and while she is not against more development in the city, she feels that there needs to be responsible growth.

“What I would like to see and what I believe we can continue to do is shape Boca in a way that ensures we have a nice balance with the development that is going to come forward,” she said. “I think we can do a better job of designing what that looks like if we work together.”

Safety is another issue that she feels strongly about, especially safety in local schools after recent tragic events.

Similarly, Cottrell believes that school overcrowding is something that needs to be addressed.

“When you hear your students talk about concerns, moving from one class to another and how crowded it is and people tripping and stepping on each other and interfering with one’s personal space – these are issues that I think are clearly upsetting to the students and they want us to be paying attention to that,” she said.

Paying attention to what the residents want is something that Cottrell said she plans to do if elected to the city council seat because the local government is supposed to be working on the city’s issues in their best interest.

“Our city government, our city council, our mayor, they are there to do the work that we’re asking them to do on our behalf and we need to be as involved as we possibly can to help them understand the issues and what our hopes and wishes are, so that they’re not making decisions in a vacuum.”

Aug. 28.

She considered running for a seat during the next election cycle, but after Scott Singer decided to run for mayor after Mayor Susan Haynie’s suspension, McKee saw an opening to run this year instead.

McKee is currently a small business owner and has produced advertisements for numerous large companies, such as Publix, JetBlue, Disney and The Home Depot. She has also held small acting roles in various movies and television shows under the name Tamara Jones, including “House of Cards” and “2 Fast 2 Furious.”

After twenty years in Boca Raton, McKee has been active within the community, dedicating her time to over 30 non-profit organizations around the city. She also served as a trustee for Boca Raton’s General Employees Pension Board, as well as two terms on the Florida Real Estate Appraisers’ Board after being appointed by Gov. Rick Scott.

“I have more experience as a resident – paying taxes, living here in the community with over 30 non-profit organizations, running a small business, raising four children in the public schools – than all the other candidates combined, times two,” she said.

McKee said that she wants to restore trust in the city government. After Haynie was arrested in April, McKee said that residents want to know that the officials they elect are transparent.

“My biggest proposal for increasing transparency is, when I’m elected, I will introduce an ordinance in

September that everyone who’s on the council releases their tax returns, with their amounts blocked out,” she said.

“I don’t want to have people’s privacy invaded, but show where their money comes from.”

She also thinks that Boca Raton needs to work on what she calls the “Three P’s,” which are parking, permitting and public schools. The parking issue is not necessarily something she said she experiences, but she has heard multiple complaints and is taking it to heart, suggesting a recirculating trolley in downtown.

After talking to some small business owners who are opening satellite offices in Boca Raton, she realized that they often had a hard time getting basic permitting information, which is something she wants to make easier to acquire, along with speeding up the permitting process for both businesses and homeowners.

“Right now I see a culture of ‘no or slow’ and that needs to change,” she said.

Public schools are the third issue of her “Three P’s and she said that while the city does not have an actual effect on the school district, the real power is staying after them.

“Anyone that tells you that they’re an education platform candidate is being disingenuous and that is because we have a county school system and anything with the city has zero real effect on the school district,” she said.

“What has an effect on the school district is our city leadership engaging with our school district.”

As a longtime resident, McKee stressed that the only people she is indebted to are the residents of Boca Raton and she wants to make sure the city is a great place for them to live.

“My vision of Boca Raton based on my experience and also my continued hope is that Boca Raton is a city with a world-class brain and a small town heart.”

Alum Earns Harvard Master’s Degree and Thanks PBSC

Growing up in humble beginnings in Brazil, Palm Beach State College alumnus Fabio DeMoura learned early the value of hard work and education, but he never imagined that he would earn a master’s degree from Harvard Extension School, one of 12 degree-granting institutions at Harvard University.

He credits PBSC and its faculty for supporting him and helping prepare him to achieve his goal this year. Now a West Palm Beach resident with dual citizenship in Brazil and the U.S., DeMoura pursued his master’s degree mostly online while working full time as a national support specialist for Philips Healthcare, a multinational technology company, where he has been employed since 2008. He donned a cap and gown in May and participated in the commencement ceremony in Cambridge, Mass.

“I thought if I could do this coming from a foreign country, having to learn English and overcome all of those barriers, it would be a good inspiration for other students,” he said. “This isn’t the type of thing you do without the support of a lot of people. I had the support of my wife, the support of my supervisors at work and the support of my professors at Palm Beach State, which is very important.”

DeMoura, 40, enrolled in PBSC in fall 2011 after relocating to West Palm Beach from Boston, where he previously worked as a field service engineer

for Philips Healthcare. With academic credentials already from an electronics school in Brazil, he began taking courses toward an associate degree at Bunker Hill Community College. However, to secure the promotion to his current role at Philips Healthcare, he had to relocate to the Southeast.

He chose West Palm Beach, and then enrolled at PBSC to continue his education. He earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in Business Management in December 2012 and a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Supervision and Management with a general management concentration in December 2014.

He then pursued his Master of Liberal of Arts in Extension Studies degree with

a management focus at Harvard. His company paid his tuition at both PBSC and Harvard. He says PBSC’s bachelor’s program prepared him for the rigors of graduate school while working full time.

“All of the professors for the bachelor’s program are really good, especially Dr. Caroll Capers.

He would say ‘learn this well because if you apply for a master’s degree, you’re going to need it,’ ” he said.

“They were always there for you.”

DeMoura, who moved to the U.S. in 2000, worked at High Technology for about seven years before landing the job at Philips Healthcare. He also said he credits much of his success to his mom, who raised him and his two siblings alone after

his parents separated. “She is an amazing woman, and she always inspired me to go after what I want in life. She worked as hard as she could to make sure we could go to school because she knew an education was the only thing that could set us free. I didn’t want to disappoint her so I gave my best, but we didn’t have the resources to pay for a college degree in Brazil,’’ he said in a note to Capers and some of his other former PBSC professors. When he later met his wife, whom he married in 2013, she encouraged him to learn English and move to the U.S. to pursue an education.

Capers said students’ stories of success is why he enjoys his work. “When students are successful in any graduate program and they come back and credit you with having contributed to that success, that’s why I teach,’’ he said.

He said the Capstone Experience aims to help them prepare for graduate school with writing, research and critical thinking skills. “A lot of what they do in the Capstone Experience course requires them to identify an organization , identify a problem within the organization, conduct research and make recommendations for addressing that specific problem. The research paper is really based on the dissertation that you would do in graduate school or a thesis. We try to focus them on being able to write and cite sources appropriately,” he said.

Lynn Men’s Soccer Opens 2018 Ranked No. 2 in the Nation

Lynn University’s men’s soccer program will enter the 2018 season ranked No. 2 in the country, as announced in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) top-25 preseason poll released Tuesday. The Fighting Knights were runners-up at last season’s NCAA Division II National Championship.

The Fighting Knights are the highest-ranked program from the Sunshine State Conference, joined by Palm Beach Atlantic at No. 9 and Tampa at No. 23.

Lynn University Director of Athletics Devin Crosby today announced Andy Walker as the new head coach of the Fighting Knights’ National Champion men’s golf program.

Walker has over a decade of professional touring experience and has coached at the collegiate and professional levels, earning nine Coach of the Year award designations.

“Andy is an elite collegiate golf coach,” said Crosby. “He is well known among various PGA, NCAA and international golf authorities, and importantly, our current student-athletes highly recommended him throughout the search process. They’re looking forward to working with him, and I’m confident his personal yet innovative coaching techniques will be a great fit for our Fighting Knights athletics programs.”

Walker will relocate to Boca Raton from Phoenix, Arizona, where he served as the head coach of men’s golf at South Mountain Community College (SMCC) and as a senior staff instructor and director of player development at the Golf Channel Academy.

Since 2013, Walker led the SMCC Cougars to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Championships in 2015 and 2016. The Cougars also held the No. 1 national ranking for 155 out of 156 weeks since the summer of 2013. Walker’s most decorated recruiting class claimed three Region I Championships, four Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) Championships and 31 tournament victories. Walker has coached two Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Phil Mickelson National Freshman of the Year honorees and three GCAA Arnold Palmer National Champions. His studentathletes have collected a combined 25 All-American selections and 30 All-ACCAC accolades. Off the course, SMCC was named the 2018 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year with a 3.81 GPA.

At the Golf Channel Academy, Walker trained junior to professionallevel golfers to build physical and mental skills that translate into improvements during competition. Walker’s clients include professional golfers from

the PGA, LPGA and European Tours, along with notable stars from the NFL and MLB.

Walker’s success earned him a GCAA Dave Williams National Coach of the Year accolade, two nods as the NJCAA National Coach of the Year, five ACCAC Coach of the Year awards and a GCAA West Region Coach of the Year honor.

Walker also has been featured as a television and radio personality in multiple capacities since 2010. He was a contestant on the Golf Channel’s reality show Big Break Ireland while co-hosting the NBC Sports Radio Show For the Love of the Game.

Before Walker joined the coaching ranks, he spent 11 years playing professionally on various domestic and international tours. He played in over 375 professional tournaments, garnering 28 professional victories and over 70 Top-10 finishes. Walker ranked as high as No. 272 among Americans on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and was the second-highest ranked African American in the world on the OWGR, behind only Tiger Woods.

Walker first tasted national collegiate success as a student-athlete, winning the 1997 NCAA National Championship at Pepperdine University.

During his three years as a Pepperdine Wave, Walker was a two-time All-West Coast Conference selection and the 1997 WCC Individual Champion.

He graduated from Pepperdine University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and was inducted into the Pepperdine Sports Hall of Fame.
