• Ouzo Bay Boca Raton has opened in the former Jazziz space at the south end of Mizner Park with a menu heavy on fresh fish and seafood, meat and Mediterranean dishes with a Greek influence.

• Ten Palm Beach County schools will be getting promised construction upgrades starting this summer, Superintendent Robert Avossa said. The projects, funded by a penny sales tax increase that voters approved in November, include paving at Del Prado Elementary in Boca Raton and water intrusion repairs at Eagles Landing Middle, west of Boca Raton. Avossa said at a press conference he plans to provide quarterly updates on progress to the School Board and public.

•Lane Kiffin will make his official FAU debut in prime time in front of a national television audience. Conference USA announced on Thursday that the FAU season opener at home against Navy has been moved to Friday, Sept. 1 at 8PM and will air on ESPNU. It will be the second time in three years that FAU elected to move a Saturday game to Friday night in order to accommodate a national network. The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program at Florida Atlantic University recently received the Best Commissioner Award at the Model European Union competition in Bloomington, Indiana.

displaying the classic diplomatic approach to new, unresolved challenges facing the Union,” said Jeffery Morton, Ph.D., professor of political science in FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

The Leon Charney Diplomacy Program, which trains students in world affairs, dispute resolution and debate, was established in 1996 and is a unit of the Peace, Justice & Human Rights Program at FAU. To date, the program has won 20 national and international awards for academic excellence.

In March, the program was named to honor the diplomatic legacy of Leon Charney, who played a key role in the 1978 Camp David Accords. Morton directs the program, which will next compete in nationals in Washington, D.C. in November. Both Amian and Barnes will lead a delegation of students representing the Russian Federation in the fall competition.

The Boca Raton council unanimously passed an ordinance that prohibits the sale of alcohol between 2-7 a.m.

The new rule only affects two businesses — Blue Martini in the Town Center plaza and Nippers on Military Trail east of Town Center Mall. Both currently serve alcohol until 5 a.m.

Blue Martini and Nippers opened outside the city limits before Boca Raton annexed the land back in 2003. These two businesses were given permission to operate under Palm Beach County’s rules, which allow alcohol to be served until 5 a.m.

“When the City annexed the Town Center area in 2003, it allowed the businesses in the annexed area to keep their business hours, but has the right to change them to be in accordance with the city code,” said Chrissy Gibson, Communication and Marketing Manager of City of Boca Raton.

In order to limit alcohol sale to only 2 a.m. will hinder Nippers’ ability to stay in business. “[This] will devastate our business,” said Danny Rosenberg, a Nippers manager. “The hours of 2-5 a.m. are when we cater to restaurant service industry workers who get off work and like to come, relax, unwind and get together with their other co-workers,” said Rosenberg.

“That's the bulk of our business.”

With only four incidents reported at Nippers in the last year by Boca Raton Police, and none violent, patrons and employees of Nippers are struggling to find justification behind this ban against their business and service.

"It's just not fair, so to speak, it is unjustifiable that we are involved with this ordinance," added Rosenberg.

Ten incidents have been reported at Blue Martini this year — including three batteries and two assaults on officers, according to Boca Raton Police.

Blue Martini generates a lot of customers in that window of time between 2 a.m. to 5 a.m. as well and is a lively hot spot, especially Thursday nights; college night, and Saturday nights; Latino night.

Under the approved ordinance, both businesses have four months to stop selling alcohol past 2 a.m.

A Salute to All Volunteers

As the month of April fades into the annals of our minds, let me personally thank all volunteers for their service. Regardless of the role you played, your contributions were immeasurable.

It is a fact of life: Volunteers are needed every day and at many places in our community.

All you have to do is look around Boca Raton and Delray Beach and ask yourself, what would my community be like without the power of volunteers? Many of our students would not be able to attend college because they did not get that scholarship that was provided by one of the many civic organizations such as the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Kiwanis or another similar organization.

The same would be the fate of many food pantry shelves that would be un-stocked and let’s not forget the hospitals where the wait would be much longer.

As volunteers, you give of yourself often at a personal sacrifice.

You are there to fill gaps that would

otherwise go unfilled and you make up segment of our community that often go unrecognized.

As I said in an earlier column, while we take a moment to inspire, recognize, encourage and thank those who give of themselves, let us also encourage others to seek out imaginative ways throughout the year to engage in their communities.

Everyone has some talent or skill that is useful to some philanthropic organization, whether a school, church or a medical facility. And there are several nonprofit organizations that can always use a willing hand, as can the elderly couple on your block struggling to keep up with their yard or home maintenance. Then, there is the single mom or dad or a homebound friend.

Whether your contribution is medical expertise, language skills or simply free time and empty hands, there are opportunities nearby for all sorts of people.

As someone who has been giving of my time, talent and treasure for more than 30 years, I am often asked

why I do the things I do in my community.

My reasons are varied. However, I find that whenever I invest time and sometimes money in a child, the world shifts a bit - not just for the community, but for me as well.

The feeling of giving back, belonging and making a difference enriches our lives and strengthens our communities.

One of the joys of volunteerism is that there are so many different ways to do it, and sometimes, we volunteer without even making conscious recognition of it — for example, helping out at church or coaching your child in a sport.

There are so many studies that show the benefits of volunteering for a community, for the organizations with whom people volunteer and for the volunteers themselves. In fact, researchers have found that volunteering is good for the volunteers’ physical and mental health – in particular, the heart, lower blood pressure, less stress and even longer lives.

Studies also show that volunteering will benefit the volunteer’s career and that employees who volunteer are better employees.

Volunteering, and living in a city of volunteers, is a win-win for everyone. It is the secret to being a more welcoming and engaged community. It also allows us to engage our youth, our young professionals and our seniors in meaningful ways to give back, engage and connect.

You may be one of those who sit back in your arm chair or in your corporate boardroom and say, how much good can my little 60-minutes make? Or you may think that humble old you or your ordinary company doesn’t have something valuable to offer.

To that I say, everyone has something to offer.

Again, a heartfelt thanks to all of the volunteers in our community for making a difference every day. We simply could not do it without you.

Watch Out: You Are Being Observed!

Wherever you go, there will always be people who will take notice of your presence. For a few moments, they make make you their “project” and pay attention to all your movements, just because they dispose of time, and you may appear “interesting” to them. Some may be attracted to good qualities you display, while others may consider you “suspicious” in some way, from the moment they set their eyes on you!

Some of that may be due to whatever you may be wearing or carrying, or it may stem from the impression you may give of being lost at that location. It may be due to the pace of your walking which is different from the rate seen all around you, besides the countenance you display before the watching surroundings.

Reasons will vary everywhere, at any time of day or night, wherever you may find yourself. It’s not just in your neighborhood, or even in the seclusion of your own abode, that it can be said: “Big brother is watching you.”

Obviously, some of those observation may be totally harmless, coming from people who have nothing else to do and, thus, just make it their pastime to pay extra attention to anyone who crosses their path at any public place where they happen to be.

There’s also the danger posed by some who may be watching you, where you go, whatever you do, so as to follow you to the point of doing some harm to you. Your dressing may give them the impression of some wealth, the casual way you walk may

cause them to think you are lost, besides any other hint they take catch that can make you their prey.

Besides, there may be some around, who may know you, somewhat, and are eager to find anything suspicious you may do, or any undesirable place you may enter, so as later to accuse you, or even bring any charges against you. Such attitudes don’t just affect celebrities, but also can rob anybody of their privacy and security.

So, what can one do? How must a person act? Obviously, there is much one can’t avoid while in the public eye. There are plenty of malicious people in the world.

Society abounds with evil people who don’t have anything better to do, who just spend their time looking for someone or some-

thing they may wrongfully accuse of being involved in some unsavory activity that never happened, or in a suspicious action which is fully inaccurate.

The only answer is to walk circumspectly at all times, to behave honorably everywhere, and in all circumstances. In a sense we owe no one explanation, but there are people around who are ready to paint an inaccurate picture of us and gossip about a conduct twisted by them, which we did not manifest in any way. People can see things one way and report them in another, or they may completely misread and describe something without a reasonable foundation.

Just remember: quite often, the actual is not the real, and one’s point of view always depends on his or her point of viewing!

PBSC Foundation raises more than $135,000 at Golf Classic

More than $135,000 was raised for the Palm Beach State College’s STEAM initiative during the College Foundation’s annual Golf Classic held last Friday.

This brings the total raised at the golf tournaments over the last 12 years to more than $1.7 million.

The funds will go toward STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) student scholarships and program enhancements to impact the projected shortage of local, skilled professionals in these fields. To date, the tournaments have funded 1,000 scholarships.

Two PBSC Students Win Cooke Foundation Scholarship By: Tabatha B. McDonald

Two Palm Beach State College honors students are among only 55 selected nationwide for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

Marshelle Davis, an aspiring certified public accountant who’s on track to graduate in May with an Associate in Arts degree, and Tanzina Chowdhury, who earned her A.A. last December and is enrolled in additional prerequisite courses this term, each will receive up to $40,000 per year for up to three years toward the educational expenses to complete their bachelor’s degree. This includes tuition, living expenses, books and required fees.

This brings Palm Beach State’s number of Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholars to nine.

They were surprised separately with the news by staff and administrators this week, including Marcella Montesinos, manager of the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College, President Ava L. Parker, J.D., and Dr. Roger Yohe, vice president for academic affairs.

“It is an amazing honor, and it’s just a testament again to the dedication and hard work on my part as well as the support that I have at home as well as at Palm Beach State,’’ said Davis, a Delray Beach married mother of three children, including two who are in college.

“This is life-changing for me.

I never thought I would get such a big scholarship,’’ Chowdhury said. “I did my best to present myself to the foundation.

I’m not only happy for the money that I’m getting but also for the fact that I’m getting this whole group of people who are intellectually curious and they really impact the world in some way. I can find the best mentors and peers there.”

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation selected this year’s scholars from nearly 3,000 applicants for the largest private scholarship in the nation for students transferring from community colleges to four-year universities. According to the foundation, all of the scholars have financial need and strong records of academic achievement demonstrated by grades, leadership skills, awards, extraordinary service to others and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Davis, 39, is on the Gold Track,

the most rigorous track in the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors College, and serves as a student ambassador for the Honors College. She is manager of Panther’s Closet, a newly established thrift-style shop run by students for students. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and a participant in the Student Activities Office volunteer program and the Student Support Services TRIO program. She also has participated in the Math and Science Summer Institute.

The first-generation college student said she abruptly enrolled in Palm Beach State in 2015 after a close relative who had dreams of getting a degree was killed in a domestic violence incident. “I have done everything I can do to try to make sure that I’m successful for many people in my family younger and older who look up to me,’’ Davis said.

Chowdhury, 25, who plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science, moved to the United States from Bangladesh in fall 2014 and enrolled at Palm Beach State in January 2015. She also maintained a 4.0 GPA and graduated on the Honors Gold Track. She is a member and vice president of scholarships for Phi Theta Kappa and president of the Dream It, Do It Club. She previously served as vice president of the Honors Student Advisory Council, director of online communication for the Student Government Association, and she received several awards.

I’m glad their efforts have not gone unnoticed and they are being recognized in this way.”

Parker said the scholars are “reminders” of why she and others chose to work in higher education. “It’s heartwarming to witness students come to Palm Beach State and realize their dreams.”

How Do You Handle Your Anger?

Two executives had become locked in an ongoing feud that was beginning to have a negative impact on their company. After all internal efforts to settle the dispute had failed, the CEO of the organization asked if I would be willing to try and be a peacemaker between the two.

Both men professed to be followers of Jesus Christ, so I thought that might make my job a bit easier. I would attempt to hear and understand both sides of the story and then seek to apply appropriate biblical principles for resolving the conflict.

After interviewing each person separately, I brought them together and explained what I believed God desired to happen in this situation. Moments later I watched as God did an astounding work in both of their hearts. These two men looked at each other and embraced as brothers sharing a common bond in Christ. Then they prayed for each other, making a commitment to continue doing so in the future.

As I observed this spontaneous healing of their professional relationship, I thought of the words Jesus taught in Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”

We live in a world – including the workplace – where animosity and adversarial relationships seem the rule rather than the exception. Competition, jealousy, vindictiveness and other destructive feelings leave little room for “peace” in the business and professional world. In fact, conflict is so commonplace, it seems the capacity for making peace has largely

been lost. Hence the need for “peacemakers,” as Jesus pointed out.

I was privileged and blessed to be a part of something amazing God did in the lives of these two business leaders. It was not skills, profound insights or any special techniques that enabled me to facilitate this process to a successful conclusion. God did the work. However, it is true that He uses peacemakers to bring healing. He might want to use you, as well.

It is important to note there is a difference between peacemaking and “peacekeeping.” Peacekeeping often consists only in looking the other way, ignoring the conflict, and foolishly hoping it will just disappear on its own. This rarely is the case.

Peacemaking involves intentionally and purposefully addressing the conflict – and all of the parties involved – with the goal of finding a solution that is acceptable to everyone. Ideally, the resolution represents a “win-win,” with no one feeling their needs or interests were not taken into account.

Peace should be a hallmark of all who profess to follow Jesus Christ, and as such we have an obligation to assist in making peace whenever we can.

It is not always easy – bringing harmony out of discord can be hard work. But we are exhorted to do it just the same. “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:11).

Thirty five middle and high school boys from south Palm Beach County heard firsthand at a recent conference how to manage their money, how to strive for excellence and how to conduct themselves when interacting with the police.

Speakers from several disciplines including the financial industry, social services and law enforcement conducted the thought provoking sessions at the 2017 E.M.B.O.D.I. (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) Conference on Saturday at Santaluces Community High School.

“It was great for the youth to see successful men both young and mature from throughout the community,” said Tammy Thomas Anthony, president of the South Palm Beach County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which hosted the event. “The presenters encouraged the young men to stay in school, study hard, set goals and become successful adults.”

Gary Graham, director of the Mentor Center of the United Way of Palm Beach County, challenged the young men to “Be Different and Stand Out”.

Other speakers educated them on their responsibility as a male, entrepreneurship, life skills and the importance of healthy living.

“This is one of the most needed programs in our community because we are losing too many young black men to violence and we have to provide them with the needed tools and resources to see an alternative life style,” event chairperson Rhonda Rogers said.

A hot favorite among the youth was Palm Beach Sheriff ’s Office captain Simon Barnes who left them with lifelong lessons on how to be a respectable man as well and how to achieve the best in life.

Barnes also told them what they should and should not do if they are stopped by law enforcement personnel.

“I had some good interactions with them,” Barnes said after the event.

“I had a chance to share with them how to interact, how to present themselves, follow directions and how to go about preventing problems if they run into it.”

Participants received five community service hours.

sports Lynn Athletics Recognizes Boca Raton FC Hires Athrison and Makes Other Coaching Changes Student-Athletes at Sixth Annual Awards Show

Boca Raton Football Club has announced multiple changes to its coaching staff ahead of their first game of the 2017 National Premier Soccer League Sunshine Conference season on April 30 at Miami United FC.

Head coach Juninho has been reassigned to Head of South American Scouting as he will return to his native Brazil to search for talents around the country and the continent to bring to the United States.

Pedro Yunes, who coached the club to the 2016 APSL Spring and Fall season titles also returns to Boca Raton FC as the Head Athletic Trainer.

Boca Raton FC is proud to announce that the head coaching vacancy has been filled by Athirson.

A product of Flamengo’s youth academy, Athirson began his career as a professional for Flamengo in 1996 where he played until 2001 when he was signed

by Juventus, and ultimately returned to Flamengo in 2004.

Athirson also had stints in clubs such as Bayer Leverkusen, Cruzeiro, Portuguesa, and Duque de Caxias, where

he retired in 2012. In mid2007, Athirson returned to Brazil to play for Botafogo. In 2008, he started playing for the Brazilian Serie B Championship

by Brasiliense (Brazil), but in the middle of the tournament, he moved to Portuguesa (Brazil), where he became captain and was one of the highlights of the cast. In 2009, the leftback played for Cruzeiro, for the second time in his career, but the following year was resigned by Portuguesa. In 2012, Athirson ended his career as a player in Duque de Caxias (Brazil).

As an international, Athirson was a member of the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil-side that finished runners-up to Mexico. In that competition Brazil defeated the United States and Germany at the Group Stage with Athirson featuring for The Seleção as a left-sided player throughout the tournament. He also featured with the Under-23 side that competed the next summer in the Sydney Olympic Games.

“We are very excited that Athirson has joined our coaching staff as the head coach,” said Boca Raton FC president Douglas Heizer. “Athirson will bring a new level of professionalism to the players and will be able to assist players in their ultimate goals in the soccer world, as someone who has already been there.”

Athirson has also been a head coach in Brazil, managing clubs like São Cristóvão, Flamengo-PI, and Tocantins over the course of the past three seasons.

Lynn University's athletics department handed out 38 awards to student-athletes and inducted four new Hall of Fame members at the annual Student-Athlete Recognition Awards show on Tuesday night, held at the Wold Performing Arts Center on campus. John Silviano of the baseball team and Marissa Tandron of the volleyball team were awarded the Fighting Knights' top honor of Blue & White Athlete of the Year, Martin Cancino and Rosalie Willig were named Scholar-Athletes of the Year, Rigo Beltran and Leanne Wright garnered Mr. and Mrs. Fighting Knight status while the swimming program captured the inaugural Lip Sync Award

Silviano set a school and Sunshine State Conference record with 31 home runs while clipping a team-best .405. The sophomore backstop became just the third player in NCAA Division II history to smack 30 home runs in a season. Additionally, Silviano established new single-season program marks for total bases (190), slugging percentage (.950) and runs batted in (76). After being named the 2016 SSC Player of the Year, Silviano was named the South Region Player of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association, Division II Conference Commissioners Association and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

All three organizations went on to tab him as a first team All-America selection, and Silviano was also chosen as a finalist for the Tino Martinez Award, which recognizes the top individual Division II player in the nation. He becomes the fourth player in program history to collect first team All-America recognition by three separate publications.

Tandron was just the second consensus all-region selection in program history this season, earning first-team honors from both the AVCA and the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association.

She was also a First Team All-Sunshine State Conference honoree after leading the league's setters in assists per set. The Jacksonville, Fla., native broke the school's 15-year-old single-season assist record and fell just shy of breaking the all-time career assists mark. She also became the third student-athlete from any sport in Lynn history to become a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection.

Male Scholar Athlete of the Year was awarded to senior golfer Martin Cancino, a two-time All-American and 2016 Cleveland Golf Scholar All-American set to graduate with a 3.67 grade point average. Rosalie Willig of the women's tennis team earned Female Scholar Athlete of the Year honors following a stellar career on and off the court in which she garnered three All-America and three ITA Scholar

Beltran is the co-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee while Wright, also a SAAC member, has been involved in several organizations throughout the Lynn University campus.

After earning Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week accolades twice so far this season, freshman Karolina Flores was named Newcomer of the Year. So far in her freshman campaign Flores has led the team in batting average (.349), doubles (12) triples (5) and slugging percentage (.577) while guiding the team to the most victories since 2004 and the most SSC wins since 2003.

The first annual Boca Regional Hospital Comeback Player of the Year was awarded to senior men's soccer player Adam Hutchinson. The Newcastle, England, native came back from a medical redshirt to start all 12 matches in 2017 while captaining the team to SSC Regular Season and Championship titles. Hutchinson was also an All-SSC Second Team and SSC All-Tournament honoree.

Lynn awarded the Best Game Performance of the year to Kristina Ortiz.

Then a freshman, Ortiz smashed the women's golf 54-hole program record by six-shots with a 210 to win the 2016 Barry Women's Golf Invite, also becoming the first freshman to win a tournament since 2011.

Finally, Best Championship Performance went to Manuel Torres, whose individual efforts helped the men's golf program to their second consecutive Sunshine State Conference title in 2016.

He steadily improved throughout the three days with scores of 77-72-70 for a 219 total, becoming the second golfer in program history to win the individual conference title while helping the Fighting Knights to back-to-back SSC crowns.

The night began with a dinner for the senior student-athletes and the annual inductions to the Lynn University Athletes Hall of Fame. Keri Remillard (Women's Soccer, '97), Hoyt McGarity (Men's Golf, '06), Dennis Riegraf (Men's Tennis, '07) and Kyle Conrad (Men's Soccer, '11) became the four newest members of the Lynn Athletics Hall of Fame. The night concluded with the announcement of Silviano and Tandron as Blue & White Athletes of the Year.
