FAU Course Prepares Students with Disabilities to Join Workforce

When entering the job market, college students with disabilities face more challenges than their peers, but an innovative college course offered at Florida Atlantic University improves their chances at finding employment and succeeding in the workforce.

According to the American Community Survey, only 53 percent of people with disabilities who have a bachelor’s degree or higher were employed in 2011, as opposed to 83 percent of those without disabilities.

Mrs. Florida Globe, Deborah Bernstein, is taking a step further in her pageant career in June by competing for the title of Mrs. U.S. of A. and Mrs. Globe Classic in Las Vegas.

This recognition would impact her goals and aspirations as a spokesperson for the Women in Need Foundation and her roles

in many other organizations throughout the community.

Bernstein has been competing in beauty pageants for most of her life. Along with being a strong, mature pageant girl with a passion to become the best version of herself, she has bigger dreams for herself and the WIN Foundation.

Community Boca’s Sue Kassoff-Correia Serves Community With Her Dental Hygienist Practice

Local resident and registered dental hygienist, Sue Kassoff-Correia, volunteered for the second year at the Florida Dental Association’s Mission of Mercy (MOM).

This year’s function was hosted in Pensacola and offered free dental services to over 1,800 people who cannot otherwise afford dental care. This event was intended to help prevent, strengthen and improve individual's’ teeth. KassoffCorreia had the privilege to also provide oral health educations to these patients.

“Volunteering for a second year, reinforced the importance of the work we do to help those who are in pain and suffering,” said Kassoff-Correia. “I derive from the joy and insight from those I help.”

She has been in the dental world for many years and has realized the need

for more and more access to affordable dental care for a great amount of the population of Florida. This inspired her to set out to help others in every aspect she can with her practice and experience.

“I receive far more than I give when I'm volunteering my time to help others,”. Said Kassof-Correia.

“I've had the good fortune to be surrounded by generous, good-hearted people who encouraged me to do

the same.”

She was with her colleagues conducting dental screening and administering preventative fluoride treatments and oral hygiene instruction for Special Olympics Area 10 Games this past Saturday, April 1 in Lake Worth. She also enjoyed being a dental screener at the Special Olympics World Games in LA in 2015.

In the near future, she plans to continue to help out communities and volunteering all over the country. She is also already registered for the Special Olympics USA games taking place in Seattle in 2018.

“My greatest pleasure is teaching and mentoring others who in turn can pass on their experience,” said KassoffCorreia. “The rewards of what I do are immeasurable and I'm grateful to be of service.”

Course Prepares Students with Disabilities to Join Workforce

When entering the job market, college students with disabilities face more challenges than their peers, but an innovative college course offered at Florida Atlantic University improves their chances at finding employment and succeeding in the workforce.

FAU’s Professional Development and Disability course provides tailor-made job training, handson work experience and help finding good-paying, desirable employment upon graduation.

“This course is an amazing opportunity to support the provision of workplace skills for students with disabilities as they prepare to move from the university environment to the workplace environment,” said Lisa Finnegan, Ph.D., assistant professor, exceptional student education, at FAU. “Students without disabilities who take the course have an opportunity to gain greater insight and perspective into their own future employment environment and to value greater diversity in the workplace with the inclusion of individuals with disabilities.”

The course was made possible through a two-year, $407,000 grant from the Kessler Foundation, a major nonprofit organization in the field of disability.

The FAU Foundation received the grant

on the behalf of Stand Among Friends, a nonprofit based at FAU that helps people with disabilities live to their potential.

The course builds the skills, workplace awareness and self-marketing ability that produce qualified and confident job candidates. Students are paired with peer mentors with disabilities, such as Renzo Burga, a senior majoring in management information systems at FAU.

“Providing students the resources they need from others, like a peer mentor with similar traits or having someone to talk to, is the best way to build their confidence,” Burga said. “Keeping them connected and motivated with the opportunities available out there will give them higher possibilities of reaching their goals of getting through college and working at what they desire and enjoy.”

Key elements of the Professional Development and Disability course include:

2.Trained peer mentors to help recruit participants, maintain a social media presence, and provide pre- and post-placement support

Florida Atlantic University recently celebrated its seventh annual gala in the Martin F. and Jane Greenberg Foundation Tower of FAU Stadium at its Boca Raton campus.

The gala brought more than 1,000 guests back in time with its theme of the gilded age of vintage ships and classic boardwalks. Spread over three levels of the stadium, the gala featured gourmet dining, a full open bar, live entertainment, auctions, photo-ops and more.

The city of Boca Raton encouraged its members of the community to come forth and give their opinions about how and for what the waterfront land should be used.

On Monday, April 3, a forum was held in Boca’s downtown library from 6 to 8 p.m. This open discussion with revolve around the thoughts and voices of Boca Raton residents’ opinions regarding the waterfront usage plan [as well as the plans that the city has discussed].

“The purpose of the meeting was to share the consultant’s information with the residents and solicit input,” said Chrissy Gibson, city communications manager. “The community wants to be a part of the planning process that determines the future of the City’s waterfront property.”

The hot topic of the usage of the waterfront has sparked interest recently within Boca Raton. In the past, there have been some problems involving the former WildFlower property. The residents’ opinions resulted in the demolition of ‘city plans’ in order to create a restaurant.

EDSA Inc (an architecture

landscaping organization), have been working for the city of Boca Raton as their consultant for roughly a year as their main goals are to help plan, design and brainstorm new ideas to use different faculties throughout the city of Boca.

As an architecture and landscaping business, some of their main clients on their endless list of success are Florida Atlantic University and Walt Disney Imagineering. They have big things in mind for the waterfront land and are open to suggestions from the public.

“There were tables of small groups who discussed and shared their ideas with the consultant EDSA will review 14 parks with waterfront access, list the current and planned amenities and ask for additional input from the community,” added Gibson.

This forum is important to EDSA Inc. as well as the entire city of Boca because the residents deserve to have recommendations. Once they assemble a report, they will show all suggestions and points discussed at the forum to the City Council for consideration. If the council decides to take action, they will pass along the ideas to the EDSA Inc. as they begin the process of designing and layout of the land accordingly.

Bernstein has been competing in beauty pageants for most of her life. Along with being a strong, mature pageant girl with a passion to become the best version of herself, she has bigger dreams for herself and the WIN Foundation.

She is working daily on goals that she has set for her and her foundation, but Bernstein has her long term ambitions as well.

“Part of my daily preparation involves staying fit, challenging myself to be positive all day and to eat as healthy (as possible) with the occasional Friday night pizza,” Bernstein said. “I have a clear vision to continue my commitment to women of all ages. The Mrs. Globe organization and the WIN Foundation give me extra motivation that is consistent with my personal commitments.”

Bernstein and her husband, Ted Bernstein, have created numerous organizations that assist the needs of others around them. Their hands-on work with different charity foundations has made her even more driven. She has important messages that she strives to voice to inspire girls and women through her campaigns and personal goals.

“Starting with young girls entering their first pageants, my message is about confidence and strength,” Deborah Bernstein explained. “As women get ready for the most important destination of their lives, I believe the confidence women get from this security is why my husband, Ted, and I love what we do so much.”

Bernstein’s next goal of being crowned Mrs. Globe will not be an easy one. There are many difficult steps that are needed to be taken in order to accomplish such a title.The need to stay fit, connected and positive are a must. It is also important to develop promoters. She works everyday to make her goals become closer and has much support from her husband, friends and many locals in the community.

“I believe every day is an opportunity to inspire and be inspired and that each of us has a daily choice about how to face the day,” she said.

As a Florida Delegate, she hopes to continue her platform to help women plan for a secure retirement arrangement down the line. It is important to her to have good self esteem, confidence and a solid form of stability for the future.

Deborah Bernstein’s messages and foundations support these causes greatly. She works hard to be the best she can for herself and to show others around her that they can be the best they can be as well.

“I am excited to compete for the Mrs. U.S. of A. National title as well as the Mrs. Globe International competition to follow in October,” she said. “This pageant promotes, the mature, strong women, modern, educated, articulate who have a passion to become their personal best and give back.”

Make this a Happy National Volunteer Month

If you walk into the lobby of one of our local hospitals chances are the person who greet or register you is a volunteer.

And if you should stop by Boca Helping Hands or the Caring Kitchen in Delray Beach, you will find dozens of people serving meals to the homeless or needy among us.

With April being National Volunteer Month, I thought I would take a moment to inspire, recognize, encourage and thank those who give of themselves. This is also a time for us to encourage people to seek out imaginative ways throughout the month and even year to engage in their communities.

As a local volunteer for more than 30 years, I am often asked why I do the things I do in my community.

My reasons are varied. However, I find that whenever I invest time and sometimes money in a child, the world shifts a bit - not just for the com-

munity, but for me as well.

The feeling of giving back, belonging and making a difference enriches our lives and strengthens our communities.

One of the joys of volunteerism is that there are so many different ways to do it, and sometimes, we volunteer without even making conscious recognition of it — for example, helping out at church or coaching your child in a sport.

There are so many studies that show the benefits of volunteering for a community, for the organizations with whom people volunteer and for the volunteers themselves. In fact, researchers have found that volunteering is good for the volunteers’ physical and mental health – in particular, the heart, lower blood pressure, less stress and even longer lives.

Studies also show that volunteering will benefit the volunteer’s career and that employees who volunteer

are better employees.

Volunteering, and living in a city of volunteers, is a win-win for everyone. It is the secret to being a more welcoming and engaged community. It also allows us to engage our youth, our young professionals and our seniors in meaningful ways to give back, engage and connect.

You may be one of those who sit back in your arm chair or in your corporate boardroom and say, how much good can my little 60-minutes make? Or you may think that humble old you or your ordinary company doesn’t have something valuable to offer.

There are so many ongoing needs in our community, needs that can only be addressed with the help of others.

In Delray Beach, the KOP Mentoring Network, which provides grassroots mentoring to children ages 7 to 17, can always use your help, whether

to read to a child, help with homework or a project, drive the van, or give some hours in another area.

And there are several other amazing nonprofit organizations that can always use a willing hand, as can the elderly couple on your block struggling to keep up with their yard or home maintenance. Then, there is the single mom or dad or a homebound friend.

I encourage you to take the bold step and find a cause you are passionate about. Ask your friends and neighbors how they are volunteering.

There is nothing quite as rewarding as serving others and working with others who want to do the same.

It is my hope that Boca Raton and Delray Beach will be the model for volunteering. In fact, we should be the volunteer capital of the world and I think we can be.

It is amazing what the current age has brought to humankind, and continues to provide. In a matter of just a few years, information truly exploded, in bringing new tools which accelerate the acquisition of important new facts, especially what can be beneficial to all humans.

Sane persons desire to be informed about new trends, about dangers which may be affecting the human race, concerning the threat of terrorist organizations around the globe, about physical maladies which may be spreading world-wide, and pose a threat to everyone wherever anyone may be situation on earth.

Information is most vital. People need to lead informed lives. And today

we all have the means of getting information, retaining it, and adding more to it in terms of advances or declines of the same. All humans need to be up-to-date about what is crucial for their daily operation and, especially, for their very survival on earth.

We have reached a time in our lives when it is possible to carry the whole world in our hands, as far as having an operative cellular phone which can provide all the basic information one needs about weather conditions, crimes in the neighborhood, threats to one’s security, national and international happenings, and all else that gives one the opportunity to be truly prepared for whatever may come next, as well as to act in the light of what’s taking place right now!

On account of the difficult days in which we live (despite the many advances that have taken place to improve the quality of our life), we still need to take the initiative in seeking whatever will truly help us to live with confidence on account of the information we are constantly being made aware of.

Even with respect to weather changes, we need to be prepared with information we secure about conditions that may bring storms, tornadoes, or other potential dangerous situations, based on scientific methods and devices that can help us intelligently to anticipate such alterations.

If that is an activity which is repulsive to you, for some reason, at least find some reliable friend or relative who can keep you well informed, so that changes which are inevitable to occur won’t meet you by surprise, but will allow you to make the necessary plans to avoid the bad consequences of conditions you may have to encounter, whether you like it or not.

Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®), will arrive March 27, 2017 to examine all aspects of the Boca Raton Police Services Department policy and procedures, management, operations, and support services. Verification by the team that the Department meets the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation—a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence.

As part of the assessment, agency personnel and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on March 28, 2017 at 5:30 PM. The session will be conducted in the 6500 Building Auditorium located at 6500 Congress Ave, Boca Raton FL 33487. If for some reason an individual cannot speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the assessment team, he/she may do so by telephone.

Youth Hockey In South Florida Is On The Rise By: Jack Rubin

Despite the fact that the Florida Panthers have remained mostly non-competitive, and with the limited number of rinks available, youth hockey is on the rise in South Florida.

When a hockey player has recognizable talent in South Florida, they have had to move north to play at a boarding school and be noticed by scouts. The South Florida Hockey Academy (SFHA) was created with a simple goal in mind, which gives Floridian youth hockey new life.

Founded by Olli Jokinen and Mikko Saarni, SFHA is designed to keep youth talent at home. No one wants to have to send their child away for high school, but right now it is their only way to make their mark as a player. The Academy wants prospects to stay with one rink throughout their whole development and they believe that they have the perfect formula with their NHL experience.

“One of the reasons why we wanted to have an academy here is that if you’re good enough to play [Division I] hockey you will not have to leave Florida,” Jokinen said. “Through our program you can stay home and live with your family.”

SFHA will compete at the AAA level, which is the highest level of youth hockey in the U.S. and Canada.

The Academy’s first season came to a conclusion in late February. SFHA’s only team for their inaugural 2016-17 season was the squirt AAA group. Coached by two-time Stanley Cup champion Petr Sykora and ex-Panther Radek Dvorak, the 9-11 year olds improved tremendously through the season.

“It was a good year,” Jokinen said. “The main thing for us, it’s not about winning games, everything in youth hockey is about the kids. When a player enters the program it is our job to make them better.”

SFHA has ambitious plans for the future. Moving into the 2017-18 year, the Academy expects to field three teams.

While they prioritize all levels of the game, the Academy is most excited to see their U16 AAA team hit the ice. Jokinen will coach the teenagers along with his longtime teammate and goalie Tomas Vokoun.

The U16 team will showcase talent from all around the world. With full-time commits from Europe, multiple different states, and local players, they will be ready to compete against the best. They are high school students first though, as the Academy stresses. Through their official partnership with Saint Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, SFHA players will receive a top of the line education.

While the Academy hopes to restructure youth hockey, they still have uphill battles to fight. One visit to Glacier Ice and Snow Arena summarizes the current state of hockey’s roots in South Florida. The arena was built in 1981 and has been deteriorating since. SFHA is making do with what they have, but with their aggressive plans for the future, it will be impossible to stay at the outdated facility.

“We’ll be able to keep three teams for now, but the challenge will be when we have five teams because of the single ice surface here,” Jokinen said.

The Academy is committed to their mission, but a new rink will be necessary sometime in the future. They are advancing in talks with the City of Boca Raton to build an ice rink. A prospective location is near the Spanish River Library.

“I think we will have a rink very soon,” he said. “We are very confident that we have a great group of investors outside of our Academy that want to build a rink.

Things look very good.”

If built near the Spanish River Athletic Park, the rink would complete Boca’s athletic sphere. Should the plans fall through, the Academy remains confident that through their relationship with Saint Andrews, something will be accomplished.

Jokinen believes the primary reason there is not a rink in Boca yet is due to troubles answering the question of “who is going to use it”. Since the Academy provides a clear answer to that question, Jokinen expects the city will be easy to work with.

As the academy builds, it contributes to a much larger motion in the hockey world. Southern hockey is continuing to make massive strides in the NHL. It is healthy for any sport to have a diverse audience, and the NHL’s expansion south is a major component of their quest to grow the game.

“The better the NHL team is, the more kids will start playing. It’s a huge impact,” Jokinen said.

The Academy also hosts its professional camp over the summer, where they hosted over 126 players in 2016.

“A lot of players spend their offseasons down here, and everybody needs to skate at some point,” Jokinen said. “The players are happy that there is now a spot where you can get everything in one place.”

SFHA is making waves in the hockey community. The game needs South Florida.

“It is the same as all the prep schools - the difference with us is we have beautiful weather and you still get to play the game you love,” Jokinen said.

This is not a guarantee that admission of unsatisfactory service will always result in retaining customers, but it is a good principle to follow for these reasons:

Righting a wrong through restitution restores the relationship. “Speak to the sons of Israel, ‘When a man or woman commits any of the sins of mankind, acting unfaithfully against the Lord, and that person is guilty, and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged&rsq uo;”(Numbers 5:6-7).

Acknowledging a wrong brings healing for ourselves. “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed” (James 5:16).

These principles offer powerful motivation for recognizing and making amends for doing wrong or failing to live up to our commitments in business. By taking ownership of our mistakes and admitting our failures can become an opportunity to showcase your heart. God, and others, will honor this.

This past week I attended the Palm Beach Film Festival events which took place at Cinemark Theater in Boca Raton and Keiser University in West Palm Beach. I viewed several of the movies starting with Beneath the Falling Snow, a Russian Spy Thriller, When the Starlight Ends, featuring Arabella Oz, daughter of Dr. Oz who was in attendance, Brave New Jersey, a comedy about the Orson Wells radio broadcast years ago that scared the wits out of people believing we were being invaded by Martians, funny story and Price for Freedom a movie about the birth of terrorism a war on radical Islamic leadership. We attended several parties at different venues such as Tilted Kilt and Mario’s Osteria. The closing night featured a film called Paris Can Wait followed by awards ceremony for best films and a closing party at the Tilted Kilt.

We Americans tend to think of Japanese people as orderly, conformist, polite and precise.

Japanese are fallible human beings after all. “After the Storm” captures the misadventures of one such imperfect man.

Shinoda Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) is an underachiever and a screw-up. After an early success, he still thinks he can make it as a novelist, but meanwhile he is working at a small detective agency and blowing most of his earnings on gambling. Hiroshi Abe is taller than the average Japanese man and quite goodlooking. This is a two-edged sword, because he can get by on his charm but he falls short on the followup. It is interesting to note that writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda originally intended to be a novelist.

Inevitably Ryota has gotten behind in his child support payments and his ex-wife (lovely Yoko Maki) is at the end of her patience. Ryota can only be

with his young son (Taiyo Yoshizawa) once a month. Despite a typhoon approaching (the storm of the title) Ryota insists on picking up his son and taking him to his elderly mother’s (Kirin Kiki) humble abode to ride out the storm.

At work Ryota’s boss (Lily Franky) is losing patience with his bright but irresponsible employee.

Ryota gets an offer to write for a cheap comic magazine but he refuses, convinced he is destined for better things.

On the fateful night of the typhoon’s landing, Ryota’s ex-wife shows up at her ex mother-in-law’s place. Although she has moved on with another man, Ryota points out they will always be in each other’s life as parents to their son.

Playing at FAU’s Living Room Theaters, “After the Storm” offers a rare glimpse at how ordinary Japanese people live. They are not a whole lot different from you or me.

sports Little League Season Rolls Into April

On Saturday, April 1, week six of of the Boca Raton Little League season came to a close.

Most divisions have a decent outlook of which teams may be competing for a championship at this point, it being the halfway point of the season.

In the Senior division, the Athletics continued their undefeated season with a 13-1 win, improving to 4-0. They hold a 2.5 game lead over the other three teams in the division.

The Pirates lead the Intermediate 50/70 division at 6-0, but are followed closely by the 5-1 Orioles. Both teams won in convincing fashion Saturday, most notably the Orioles who knocked the

The Nationals and Phillies are tied atop the Major division, which consists of 11-12 year-olds. The Phillies barely prevailed over the Astros by a score of 4-3. The Blue Jays, Nationals, and Rays also won their Major league games Saturday.

Finally, there were nine Minor league games across the two divisions of the largest age group in Boca Little League. The Nationals lead the Flagler division while the Astros are in first in the Mizner. Both teams won by at least four runs Saturday.

The Little League season continues with games every weekend and some weekdays at Sugar Sand Park. The championships will be played on May 20.

The Lynn University lacrosse team honored the One Love Foundation’s Yards for Yeardley movement at home Saturday, March 25, before falling to Florida Tech in the SSC opener.

Throughout the school year, the team has been raising awareness of the movement and before Saturday’s game, they wore One Love warm up shirts for the second year in a row.

The foundation was created in 2010 to honor Yeardley Love, a women’s lacrosse player at the University of Virginia, who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. Yards for Yeardley brings awareness to relationship abuse on college campuses and in turn, strives to bring an end to it altogether.

“Our Title IX office with Lorna Fink and Matt Roche did a great job raising relationship violence awareness through the One Love Foundation,” head coach Brian Kingsbury said.

“Playing a game in Yeardley’s honor helps bring the ‘big picture’ to these young men.”

Lynn University and teams around the country showed their support by reaching a goal of running one million yards in 30 days. Over 1.7 million yards were accomplished by 106 people who submitted their steps, which almost doubled the initial target.

Christopher Knight ran 420,000 yards and was the overall winner, while David Czarlinsky, a Lynn freshman, led the students with 105,000 yards.

"It was great to be able to walk for such a meaningful cause," Czarlinsky said. "It was nice because everyone who walked pledged to end dating violence.”

Once the game started, the Fighting Knights quickly took a 1-0 lead thanks to Caleb Cerf ’s first goal of the season.

The lead did not last long however, as Florida Tech came back with three unanswered goals, putting them on top 3-1.

With just seconds remaining in the first quarter, Lynn’s Johnny Gavin scored a goal off an assist by Austin Jerhoff to bring them back within one.

The second quarter went back and forth as Lynn consistently answered back after Florida Tech scored multiple goals. Then with 15 seconds left, Jerhoff scored his second goal of the game to tie the game at five, before coming back again 14 seconds later for the hat trick, which gave them the lead.

The lead continued to change between the two teams throughout much of the third and fourth quarters.

Lynn grabbed a 10-9 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game, but Florida Tech was able to tie it once more 44 seconds later.

The score remained tied until Florida Tech’s Addison Abramson scored the go-ahead goal with 2:15 remaining, as they went on to take an 11-10 victory.

The loss meant the Fighting Knight’s record fell to 4-4. Their next matchup is Saturday, April 1 at Tampa.
