“For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” - Romans 8:6-8

Boca Raton Regional Hospital One Of Four Sites Nationally In “Breakthrough Therapy” Clinical Trial
Researchers at Boca Raton Regional Hospital’s Marcus Neuroscience Institute (MNI) are one of only four sites nationally to be investigating the effectiveness of using engineered polio virus in the treatment of patients with an aggressive brain tumor – glioblastoma (GBM) multiforme – that has been refractory to conventional chemotherapy and/or radiation. The Federal Drug Administration has designated the trial as “breakthrough therapy” which is meant to expedite the development of medications that have shown preliminary signs of clinical efficacy in patients in early clinical studies. According to Frank Vrionis, MD, Ph.D., Director of MNI and Principal Investigator for the trial at the Institute, the modified polio virus (called PVSRIPO) is based on the oral poliovirus vaccine used in the U.S. in the past for standard vaccination of infants. PVSRIPO doesn’t cause polio, but infects different cell types present in brain tumors, including malignant cells and immune cells that infiltrate the tumor. “When induced at the tumor site, it directly kills tumor cells and elicits inflammatory events that engage the immune system,” said Dr. Sajeel Chowdhary, Director of Neuro-Oncology at MNI and Sub-Investigator for the study. Therapy for patients with brain
www.bocaratontribune.com
tumors has always been impeded by what is known as the blood-brain barrier, which blocks chemotherapy agents from reaching tumor sites. The breech of that barrier through neurosurgical technique has now changed everything. “Through the use of micro catheters under MRI guidance and using a technique called convection enhanced delivery, we can now bypass the blood-brain barrier and deliver the therapeutic agent, such as PVSRIPO, to the tumor site” said Dr. Vrionis. The procedure itself is minimally invasive and usually requires a one to two day hospitalization. Findings of the use of PVSRIPO in the treatment of patients with recurrent GBMs have been very encouraging. Today, The New England Journal of Medicine published clinical trial results conducted by The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke – Duke authors treated 61 patients with recurrent malignant gliomas with recombinant poliovirus infusion and noticed a 21 percent chance of three year survival versus four percent in historical controls. “The use of immunotherapy in the treatment of cancer patients is now the new frontier in oncology,” noted Dr. Vrionis “We’re most proud that MNI has joined such a prestigious group in advancing the boundaries of that frontier.”

School District of Palm Beach County Earns an A The School District of Palm Beach County is an A-rated district, and has the highest number of District-operated "A" schools when compared with other large urban school districts. According to preliminary school grades released Wednesday by the Florida Department of Education, the District ranks highest in Florida on total number of points earned when compared with other large urban districts. The District also was highest among its peer districts in math achievement, science achievement, math learning gains for all students, and high school graduation rate. Overall, 71 District-operated schools earned A's from the state, and 36 District-operated schools earned B's. Sixty-five percent of all District-operated schools can boast A and B ratings, a 4 percentage point increase from the 20162017 school year. Thirty-one schools improved their rating by at least one letter grade. Two schools - Pine Jog Elementary and West Riviera Elementary - improved by two letter grades. Pine Jog Elementary improved from a C to an A, while West Riviera Elementary improved from a D to a B. "Our District's A rating is due to the hard work and dedication of Palm

"We also know that the support of our parents and community play a large role in our success, and we truly appreciate the involvement of our families and community partners in making us Florida's highest performing large school district." Nine schools improved to an A, including: - Crystal Lakes Elementary School - Forest Hill Elementary School - Greenacres Elementary School - H.L. Local Library Rocking to Promote Summer Reading The summer is here and while some of our kids are in camps or away with relatives there are those who are at home or in the streets during the days. It is well known that a lack of reading during the summer can cause a student to lose many educational achievements made - over the previous school year when he or she returns to school in the fall. Simply put, if reading and learning are not continued, students can lose up to two months of skills during the summer. That is known as summer slide. While parents and educators are focusing on getting kids to read during the summer months, librarians know the key to getting books into their hands is to first get them into the library. So, the hard-working staff at the Boca Raton Public Library, through their summer reading program, are using creative measures to do so. Using this year’s national theme, “Libraries Rock,” they are trying to bring
music and reading together. Earlier this month, library officials kicked off their summer reading initiative with a party. The family-oriented event featured games and food. There was also a live DJ and an interactive drumming activity. They are encouraging residents of all ages to “rock out and read,” as well as participate in the more than 100 programs and classes for all ages at the library. Mayor Scott Singer issued a proclamation declaring June 4 through Aug. 10 this year as Summer Reading time. The proclamation recognized that public libraries play a critical role in providing a bridge for education and academic skills for students over the summer months to prevent “summer slide.” When Arne Duncan was secretary of education about 10 years ago, he called summer learning loss
“devastating.” Studies show that the average student lose up to one month of instruction over the school summer breaks. Just imagine the impact this will have on disadvantaged students, who are not likely to pick up a book during those eight or nine weeks. I learned recently that if students read just six books this summer, they can maintain their current reading level, and, if they read between 10 and 20 books of their own choosing, they can increase reading achievement. When kids enroll in the summer reading program, they will receive a free reading log, bag and bookmark. They also can collect a new prize each week for reading. ’Tweens and teens receive a cell phone wallet upon enrollment and are placed in weekly drawings for gift cards when they log their books online. Adults are not left out. They get a free book bag when they enroll and are eligible for monthly drawings for local concert tickets when they log the books they read at bocalibrary.org.
The staff also are donning themed summer reading shirts throughout the summer. I think their approach is the best antidote for the ‘summer slide’. Thanks to The Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library, The Junior League of Boca Raton and the law firm of Boyd, Richards, Parker and Colonnelli who have shown their support for this year’s Summer Reading initiative at the library through their generous donation. Some other local libraries are taking creative initiatives to ensure every child has a book in hand this summer as well. Our friends in Delray Beach are feeding kids lunch while they are there. They also are making sure those kids have library cards. C. Ron Allen can be reached at crallen@delraybeachtribune.com or 561665-0151.
POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.
Be Informed! It is amazing what the current age has brought to humankind, and continues to provide. In a matter of just a few years, information truly exploded, in bringing new tools which accelerate the acquisition of important new facts, especially what can be beneficial to all humans. Sane persons desire to be informed about new trends, about dangers which may be affecting the human race, concerning the threat of terrorist organizations around the globe, about physical maladies which may be spreading world-wide, and pose a threat to everyone wherever anyone may be situation on earth. Information is most vital. People need to lead informed lives. And today we all have the means of getting information,
retaining it, and adding more to it in terms of advances or declines of the same. All humans need to be up-to-date about what is crucial for their daily operation and, especially, for their very survival on earth. We have reached a time in our lives when it is possible to carry the whole world in our hands, as far as having an operative cellular phone which can provide all the basic information one needs about weather conditions, crimes in the neighborhood, threats to one’s security, national and international happenings, and all else that gives one the opportunity to be truly prepared for whatever may come next, as well as to act in the light of what’s taking place right now! On account of the difficult days
in which we live (despite the many advances that have taken place to improve the quality of our life), we still need to take the initiative in seeking whatever will truly help us to live with confidence on account of the information we are constantly being made aware of. Even with respect to weather changes, we need to be prepared with information we secure about conditions that may bring storms, tornadoes, or other potential dangerous situations, based on scientific methods and devices that can help us intelligently to anticipate such alterations. Sadly, there are many people who don’t want to be bothered with the information that is always available. They consider a waste of time to check the newspapers,
to watch television news, to talk intelligently with neighbors and friends about conditions that surround us, wherever we may be. Let us all be more proactive in seeking information with greater diligence, and acting on it accordingly. If that is an activity which is repulsive to you, for some reason, at least find some reliable friend or relative who can keep you well informed, so that changes which are inevitable to occur won’t meet you by surprise, but will allow you to make the necessary plans to avoid the bad consequences of conditions you may have to encounter, whether you like it or not. Whatever be your way, be informed!
Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

columnists FAITH By Robert J. Tamasy
To Be A Good Leader, Be A Good Learner Leadership offers great opportunities. Many leaders regard their roles as a tremendous privilege. But leadership also presents significant challenges, not only for effectively guiding others but also for avoiding pitfalls that have beset people in executive roles throughout history. For example, leadership positions can inflate the ego. This is one reason we read this admonition from the apostle Paul, himself a well-established leader: “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you“(Romans 12:3). One form of “thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought” is operating according the assumption that we know everything, at least more than everyone we direct or manage. We fear that if we admit we do not have all the answers, subordinates might think less of us, even question our authority. However, one of the endearing traits of good leaders is willingness to acknowledge they still have much to learn. In fact, openness to learn from those who report to them can enable leaders to show how much they value their staff. A good leader strives to remain a good learner. Many of my greatest workplace lessons have come from people I had hired and directed. We find the good leaders are good learnersprinciple exemplified by Jesus Christ, whom the Bible describes as fully God and fully man. As God in the flesh, He did not lack knowledge. Yet He showed His followers a willingness to
learn from them. For instance, Jesus inquired of His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”(Matthew 16:13). He did not need to ask this question, but was eager to hear what His followers had to say. Predictably, they offered a variety of responses. Then Jesus asked a second question, “But what about you? Who do you say that I am?” One of them, Peter, soon replied, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:15-16). Jesus not only wanted to know their answers, but also desired to encourage them to think through the most important question of all time. The same applies to the realm of the workplace. No matter the enterprise in which we are involved, the truth that good leaders are good learners– leader/ learners – never fails. In fact, it is timeless. The Bible gives much insight into this, including the book of Proverbs. Here are just two examples: Maintain an openness to learning new things. It has been said, “Not one of us is as smart as all of us.” It may require humility to recognize it, but we each can learn from people even at the lowest professional levels. They can give perspectives and approaches we might not have considered. “Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge”(Proverbs 23:12). Pursue truth and understanding. Followers of Jesus Christ pray for God’s wisdom and guidance. Often He supplies that through other people. We are wise to consider what they are thinking before making key decisions. “Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding”(Proverbs23:23).
I Heart Mac & Cheese Opens Location in Boca Raton By: Bryanna Basilio With already six locations in Florida, customizable macaroni and cheese franchise “I Heart Mac & Cheese” added their newest location in Boca Raton. “Since the folks in South Florida already know and love our brand, we expect them to greet us with the same warm welcome to Boca Raton,” said I Heart Mac & Cheese’s President and Chief Development Officer Dan Collins. I Heart Mac & Cheese is a casual concept which specializes in customizable, made-to-order macaroni and cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches. The menu combines the creativity of Chef Michael Blum, with his award-winning recipe resulting in a grown-up approach to this classic childhood dish. The growing franchise has locations in three states: New York, Oklahoma, and Florida. I Heart Mac & Cheese locations can be found throughout South Florida in Coral Springs, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Parkland, and Jupiter. The I Heart Mac & Cheese headquarters is in Boca Raton, so a restaurant in the city is necessary, says Collins. “This will become a franchisee training location, but more importantly, we know the families and college kids in Boca love our product. They have been driving to our other restaurants and telling us they want us in their town.” The Boca restaurant is expecting a large flow of college students due

to the location. The location will be in The Shops at University, a shopping plaza behind Florida Atlantic University. With the easy access, the density of families and students close by, dining choices, and the takeout and delivery options, the company is confident and excited about the new location. “We have been hiring students from FAU,” said Collins. “It’s the perfect location. We know the location will be a home run.” The restaurant is unique and is the only mac and cheese brand to franchise nationally. Guests can choose to build their own bowl of mac, toasted sandwich, salads or tater tots, and staff will make the dish for them. They can also choose from Chef ’s Creations, like Philly cheesesteak, lobster and truffle oil, buffalo chicken and many others. “We have a great product, low initial investment, quick development timeline, simple operation and a great experienced support team,” said Collins. In honor of National Mac & Cheese Day on July 14, I Heart Mac & Cheese will introduce the Pepperoni Pizza Mac, a blend of pasta and its proprietary cheese blend with mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses, marinara, pesto and Hormel pepperoni. “National Mac & Cheese Day is the perfect occasion to enjoy our delicious macaroni and cheese bowls,” said Stephen Giordanella, CEO and chairman. “We are looking forward to celebrating this classic comfort food with our guests at all our locations.”

The Boca Raton Tribune Announces 2018 Candidate Forum
The Boca Raton Tribune is proud to announce that the Boca Raton Tribune Candidate Forum will take place on August 17 and 24 at the Boca Raton Community Center this year as the city gets ready for the special election on August 28. All candidates running for the City Council Seat A, and Mayoral Seat, will all have an equal opportunity to give Boca Raton residents their best reason as to why they should win their vote for the special election. Like years past, the forum will be broken up into two days. The Seat A candidate forum is scheduled for August 17, and the Mayoral forum is set for August 24. Both forums will take place at the Boca Raton Community Center, located at 150 Crawford Blvd, Boca Raton, FL 33432. “We are excited to continue our tradition of having the Boca Raton Tribune Candidate Forum the last two weeks before election day,” said publisher Douglas Heizer. “We were unable to have our Candidate Forum back in March so we are excited to be able to have another chance to get our Forum for the residents of the city in this very important time.” The event is free and open to the public, however, due to seat limitations, you must register online to receive your complimentary ticket. Readers and residents are encouraged to submit their questions, as the forum will be based mostly on readergenerated questions. Questions should be sent to candidateforum@bocaratontribune.com or post to the newspaper’s Facebook page; reference the upcoming
Candidates Forum along with your query. Questions will be reviewed by the Boca Raton Tribune’s editorial staff, and Editor C. Ron Allen, who will be the Forum’s moderator. With a partnership with Boca Chamber Radio, the Boca Raton Tribune Candidate Forum will be broadcasted live via the Boca Chamber Radio as they will have all the election coverage throughout the campaign season. “The Boca Raton Tribune Candidate Forum has been one of the marquee events for the Political season in Boca Raton and we are proud to have partnered with The Boca Raton Tribune in making this event even better,” added Boca Chamber Radio’s Dean Miuccio. “Boca Chamber Radio and The Boca Raton Tribune will be your number one source of all your political news this elections cycle.” Furthermore, as a new part of the process that will further assist residents to make an educated decision in the polls, The Boca Raton Tribune will pre-record interviews with all candidates and have it broadcasted live on Boca Chamber Radio’s Good Day Boca radio show. As always, a special election edition of The Boca Raton Tribune will be published the last week of the election period with our Questionnaire that all candidates will fill out, as well as profiles on all the candidates in the race. “We want to give our readers the most information we can so they can make an informed decision,” Publisher Douglas Heizer said.

Boca Raton Regional Hospital Boca Airport Customs and Border Protection Facility Opens Offers Saturday Hours for Breast Health Testing
The Christine E. Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital is now providing Saturday appointments as a more convenient option for patients with workweek responsibilities. The Hospital offers screening and diagnostic mammograms, breast ultrasounds, same-day results as well as bone density on the first Saturday of each month beginning June 2. “We all lead hectic lives, but health must always be made a top priority. Our new Saturday hours represent the Institute’s commitment to ensuring both comprehensive and convenient care,” said Shakira Sarquis-Kolber, Director of Women’s Imaging at the Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. “We are most pleased to provide women with this appointment option.” Mammograms will be performed using the Senographe Pristina™, the next generation in 3D mammography. The Pristina is faster, quieter and has rounded
corners with contoured armrests instead of handgrips to maximize comfort during the exam. All mammograms are performed in SensorySuites, which are infused with calming fragrances and provide flat screen monitors that display soothing videos and photos to create a serene environment. “As the first hospital in the nation to offer the Pristina experience, our Women’s Institute continues to set the standard in breast health. We have the latest technology, outstanding physicians and support staff, years of expertise, a top-quality facility, expedited results and now a more accommodating alternative to scheduling mammograms,” said Kathy Schilling, MD, Medical Director of the Lynn Women’s Health & Wellness Institute. Major insurances are accepted and financial assistance is available for those without coverage who qualify. Appointments can be made by calling 561.955.4700.

At 10:30 AM on May 31st, the much-anticipated U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility officially opened at the Boca Raton Airport. The occasion was celebrated the previous evening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception, which was attended by many of Boca Raton’s government, civic and business leaders. Festivities began with Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer cutting the ribbon at the CBP facility, which was followed by the reception inside the neighboring Privaira Private Aviation hangar. Attendees enjoyed light international fare and live steel drum music, before transitioning to the speaking portion of the evening. Airport Executive Director, Clara Bennett began by thanking the numerous individuals, departments and organizations that helped bring the CBP facility to fruition. She then highlighted the significance of opening a CBP facility in Boca Raton. “Throughout its history, the Airport has served as a catalyst for economic growth, playing a pivotal role in the development of Boca Raton as a major hub for corporate headquarters and international commerce,” Bennett said. “Beyond the economic impact, the new facility will ultimately be about connecting the Boca Raton Airport to the rest of the world.” Boca Raton Airport Authority (BRAA) Chair Mitch Fogel spoke next. “I know you’re as excited as we are for what this project represents for the future of this city of Boca Raton, the Boca Raton Airport and this community,” Fogel said. “This project is the result of the cooperative efforts of the Airport Authority, Airport tenants and users, city leaders and our community partners working together towards a common goal.” Fogel was followed by Mayor Scott Singer, who showcased the role that the Airport has historically played in the growth of the city, as well as the impact that the CBP facility will likely make on further economic growth. “Boca’s history really begins, in a big way, at this Airport when it was the Army Airfield in the 1940s… it helped us emerge into the flourishing city we are, a city of nearly 100,000, with a business weight much above that,” said Mayor Singer. “We’ve been following this closely and waiting anxiously for the Airport Customs facility to be open. Now that it is, we can

be an international attractor of business.” Mayor Singer also stated that “it’s really an opportunity for us to attract corporate headquarters, and to retain and expand on our high paying jobs.” Airport Executive Director, Clara Bennett returned to the podium, stating “this project would not have been possible without the partnership of the entire team at U.S. Customs and Border Protection.” Bennett then introduced Diane Sabatino, Director Field Operations (DFO) for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Miami and Tampa Field Offices. Sabatino thanked Bennett for her efforts, which she says were instrumental in making the project move quickly. “It may seem like it was a long time to get this project to opening. But from a federal government perspective, we moved about as close to lighting speed as I’ve seen, and (that’s) certainly due to the efforts of everyone involved,” Sabatino said. “These improvements here in Boca Raton demonstrate the benefits that can be achieved when working with key stakeholders, and there’s tremendous value in industry and government working together to find smart, cost-effective solutions while providing the best services possible.” Privaira President and CEO Clemens Vanderwerf was the final speaker. He thanked everyone involved for their great work, and congratulated them for opening a CBP facility in Boca Raton. In addition to the speakers, other notable guests included BRAA Board Members, Cheryl Budd, Gene Folden and James Nau; County Commissioner Steven Abrams; and City Council Members Andrea O’Rourke, Monica Mayotte and Jeremy Rodgers; Shawn Jamison Hall from the office of Senator Bill Nelson; Wendy Lipsich from the office of Representative Ted Deutch: as well as, Tess, the CBP service beagle. Representatives from Discover The Palm Beaches and The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism were also on site providing information about travel to Palm Beach County and The Bahamas. With the CBP facility now officially open, readers are encouraged to follow the Airport on their social media profiles and through the website at BocaAirport. com for news releases on the first plane, first jet, first Vet and first pet to utilize the CBP facility.

FAU Extends Kiffin though 2027 Season
Lane Kiffin, Florida Atlantic University’s head football coach, has received a contract extension to lead the Owls through 2027. “We are extremely excited about the contract extension. Obviously, this came about because of the success that Lane (Kiffin) has had here,” said Brian White, FAU’s vice president and director of athletics. “It shows Lane’s commitment to FAU. It also shows the University’s and (FAU President) Dr. (John) Kelly’s commitment to our football program and all of athletics. It is an exciting thing to be a part of and shows a bright future for FAU.” Kiffin led the Owls to an 11-3 record in 2017 and their first Confer-
ence USA Championship and first Boca Raton Bowl victory. It marked the second conference title and third bowl win in the program’s 17 seasons. FAU will be led in 2018 by 16 players who recently received preseason all-conference recognition by Athlon Sports. That list includes Devin “Motor” Singletary, who led the country in both touchdowns (33) and scoring (198). FAU will open the 2018 season at Oklahoma on Saturday, Sept. 1 at noon. The game will be carried on Fox. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1-866-FAU-OWLS. All FAU football games can be heard by tuning into ESPN West Palm 106.3 or on the ESPN App.
Lynn Baseball’s Patrick Dorrian Signs with Pittsburgh Pirates
Following a decorated senior campaign, 2018 Lynn University baseball alum Patrick Dorrian will continue his playing career as the shortstop signed a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. This marks the eighth consecutive year a member of the Fighting Knights has signed with a Major League Baseball club. The Kingston, N.Y., native racked up multiple awards in his final collegiate season after ranking inside the Sunshine State Conference’s top-five in batting average (.394), slugging percentage (.798), hits (74), on-base percentage
(.471), runs batted in (57), triples (6) and home runs (17). In addition to his SSC Player of the Year accolade, Dorrian was a consensus First Team All-American, becoming just the fifth player in program history to land First Team All-America honors three times in a single season. Dorrian joins Rigo Beltran from the 2018 Lynn baseball graduating class as Fighting Knights to move on to the pros. Beltran was selected in the 31st round of the MLB Amateur Draft to the Seattle Mariners.
