COMMUNITY Second Tri-Rail Location in Boca Raton Selected

The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority announced the location for Boca Raton’s second Tri-Rail station, which will be on Military Trail and Northwest 19th Street, the previous site of King’s Gourmet Deli.

Boca Raton currently has one Tri-Rail station at Yamato Road, which happens to be the system’s busiest station with well over one thousand riders per day.

It is located just north of the proposed new station.

The announcement was made last Wednesday at a public meeting at the Spanish River Library after the location was narrowed down from an initial list of seven sites. Five of them were ruled out rather quickly, until the eventual chosen site and one at the northern Town Center Circle were taken into heavy consideration.

Ultimately, the King’s Gourmet Deli site was chosen due to its access to Military Trail, as well as its ability to maximize bus storage. Other factors included the room for a kiss and ride drop-off and access to a traffic signal.

SFRTA unveiled that there will be up to 75 parking spaces at the location, along with a bus pullet on Military Trail.

The announcement of the new station comes shortly after a big month for Tri-Rail. During the month of April, Tri-Rail had their highest monthly on-time performance since 2001, with 96.2% of trains staying on schedule. Boca Raton’s

new station could help those statistics even more, giving riders more options for their daily travels.

“We are delighted to finally provide our passengers with the level of service they desire and deserve,” SFRTA Executive Director Jack Stephens said.

“Because of some repairs to the corridor, we were able to relieve some speed restrictions that had impacted [on-time performance].”

Currently, the property for the second Tri-Rail station is owned by Crocker Partners, which means that SFRTA would have to negotiate with them for the 2.12 acre site. The Boca Raton-based developer, which worked on the popular Mizner Park before it was opened in 1991, threatened to sue the City of Boca Raton back in April over issues with the city’s Midtown project. The next month, they moved forward and filed the lawsuit, while also stepping away from being the lead developer.

Even if the acquisition of the property goes smoothly, however, the station will not be ready anytime soon, as it still has to go through multiple stages of planning. Finalization of schematic plans is expected to take place this fall, while design plans will be finalized sometime between 2019 and 2020. The new Boca Raton station could be ready to open for business by 2023 and the estimated total cost would be around $17 million.

FAU Selected For Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program

Florida Atlantic University has been selected by the Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program (VFEP), a program that offers qualified veterans the opportunity to receive an entrepreneurship education, as one of six network partners to administer an entrepreneur initiative throughout Florida.

Other network partners include the University of West Florida, Tallahassee Community College, the University of Central Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University and Action Zone.

The Network Partners will implement the Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program through their different locations. The program consists of a selfpaced online module, periodic on premise workshops and a cohort-based class for a small group of veteran entrepreneurs.

Mentorship will be incorporated into this program as it has proved to be the key to success in past VFEP cohort-based classes. Network Partners will also hold monthly networking and resource sharing meetings, building a community and pipeline for veterans interested in entrepreneurship.

FAU’s Adams Center for Entrepreneurship and FAU’s Military & Veterans Affairs office have been partnering with the Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program since it began in 2015.

a variety of AACSB-accredited majors for students seeking a career in tomorrow’s challenging business world. The college also offers minors and certificates for students looking to specialize and enhance their course of study.

Named in recognition of FAU alumnus Scott H. The center also focuses on community engagement efforts offering a portfolio of programs such as the family business initiative, Shrimp Tank podcast, annual business plan competition, entrepreneur boot camp course, and the Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program.

Two Palm Beach State College employees have been appointed to advisory boards for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, including one who is making history.

Dr. LaTanya McNeal, assistant dean of student services for the Belle Glade campus, will serve as vice chair of the six-member inaugural advisory board for Clubs in the Belle Glade area, which includes a teen center and six elementary school sites that serve about 1,500 members daily. Her appointment comes at a pivotal time for the organization, which held a groundbreaking ceremony in April for its new Smith & Moore Family Teen Center in Belle Glade. The new 13,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility will allow the Boys & Girls Club to serve more youth.

Marcella Montesinos, manager of the Dr. Floyd F. Koch Honors Col-

lege, will join the advisory board for the Wellington Club, which is the largest club in the county serving about 400 children per day.

“We’re always glad when members of the community get involved in our clubs by giving of their energy and expertise,” said Steve Cornette, vice president of operations for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County. “Club kids benefit tremendously when they see that people genuinely care about their wellbeing and board members make a bigger difference than they even realize.”

The Boys & Girls Clubs serve children ages 6 to 18, and membership is $30 per year. While the clubs have over 5,800 members, through outreach initiatives, they serve over 8,500 children annually. There are seven advisory boards for the county’s 13 clubs, as well as a corporate board.

Boca Raton public relations man Barry Epstein, who wrote the weekly Barry’s Buzz column and was one of The Boca Raton Tribune’s biggest supporters, has died. He was 76.

A service his family describes as “appropriate for a person as colorful and vibrant as Barry,” was held at noon Thursday at Star of David, 7701 Bailey Rd Pompano Beach, FL 33068.

Early in his early career, Epstein headed the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. But once he started his own PR, marketing and political consulting firm in 1979 in his name, he was off and running.

“We are saddened by the loss of one of our beloved columnist,” said Douglas Heizer, publisher of The Boca Raton Tribune. “Barry was a well-respected and honorable man who was filled with joy and loved every minute of life.”

In 2003, Epstein founded the Gold Coast Public Relations Council, South Florida’s largest independent group of PR, marketing and communications professionals from Palm Beach, Broward, Martin and Dade counties.

Epstein also founded The Gold Coast Tiger Bay Club, a club that was modeled after the famous National Press Club in Washington DC. The Gold Coast Tiger Bay Club provides a forum of public discourse and debate on politics, people and issues affecting our lives, our community, and our world.

“Barry was a Public Relations maven and his joy came from connecting people,” added Heizer. “He was someone I was honored to call my friend and proud to have known.”

Epstein was born in New York and graduated from Kent State University.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Epstein, his son, Jaret Epstein, brothers Ira and Lenny Epstein and two grandsons.

Should Journalists Start Packing Now?

Sitting in my journalism classes in college, I learned the essence of what makes a good story, avoid libeling someone, the importance of asking tough questions and getting the details to write my stories factually and accurately.

When I worked in five newsrooms from Massachusetts to Florida, I practiced with pride the cannons I learned.

At no time during my more than three decades as a journalist, was I prepared to protect myself with a pistol on the job, the way it is debated that some teachers should do today.

In the wake of last week’s brutal attack on my fellow journalists at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, I find myself asking, ‘What the hell is happening in this country?’

All the things we once considered “sacred” or the places and institutions we thought were untouchable are now under attack.

As news people, we expect to go to work every day and do our jobs without fear of retribution. Yes, we expect the letters, phone calls, and emails from those who disagree with us.

I am not naïve to think there are not wackos who will hurt you just because they can or because they don’t like your work.

While I know there are those who will bleed venom-laced epithets from the mouth and hurl threats to massage their egos, I must admit that until recently I never anticipated anyone physically harming journalists on U.S. soil.

Over the past few years, espe-

cially under this new administration, the term “First Amendment rights” has been watered down almost like a trite expression.

The reality is, there seems to be a lack of understanding of why there is this right and what it truly means.

As there are amendments that underscore and secure freedom and democracy in this country, there are amendments designed to help us keep these freedoms.

The media is the fourth checkpoint on the democracy of this country.

The other three are congress, the supreme court and the executive branch.

Although this is not a federal job, the idea of the free press was to be another checking point, and when you try to remove or coerce that check point, you’re unbalancing the scale.

Considering the daily assault on journalists coupled with the phrase “fake news” by politicians, political commentators and those who see journalists as enemies of the public, I am not surprised though.

When I think of the slaughtering of worshippers in churches, the attacks on innocent children in schools and now, the targeting of journalists for doing what we do - report the news as unbiasedly as we possibly can - it makes me say, enough is enough.

During my 24 years at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, I had my share of unkind missives from readers. Cops threatened me, lawyers and even members of the clergy dressed me down over my

coverage of them.

A retired educator once sent me a tear sheet of my story with a word highlighted and a $2 bill with the encouragement to “invest in a dictionary and use it.”

And there was the time when two of my colleagues discovered that a local deli owner was selling pork for kosher.

After the story broke, he told one of the writers that the story would kill his business and he was going to blow us up, which prompted the paper to assign a security guard at the entrance to the building.

Yes, I recall my days as a reporter at the Sun-Sentinel wearing a bulletproof vest to work. That was to ward off an attack from a few disgruntled rogue cops who had threatened me after I wrote a series of stories outing their practices.

I could have been over paranoid but I donned the vest myself because -the paper didn’t even know I was wearing one - I knew what these guys were capable of doing.

One police chief also tried - not once but two times – to get me fired. He even tasked one of his underlings to keep a folder on me, of which I later learned after he was forced to resign in disgrace.

Perhaps one of the more egregious experiences was when an irate developer, who lost a bid during a highly contested election, accused me of costing him the election and sent me a caustic missive to have sexual relations with myself.

It has become commonplace to hear elected officials who disagree with something the newspaper published brand

our work “fake news” in public meetings.

Still, we do not expect anyone to barge in our newsrooms and unleash hell on us as Jarrod Ramos did.

What about the days when someone would threaten to kick your rear end like a soccer ball or swear they would cancel their subscription so “your paper would close down.”

As someone who has spent much of my life in newsrooms, what I find especially frightening today is how quickly people are at declaring journalists as the enemy, if they do not like something that was printed or reported.

In May, we saw where Greg Gianforte, a Republican candidate for Montana’s congressional seat, “body-slammed” a Guardian political reporter to the floor on the eve of the state’s special election after the reporter questioned him about the Republican healthcare plan.

Perhaps there are some media outlets that lean more one way than the other, but most of us, including the Boca Raton Tribune, do not.

We take great pride, every single day, to report the local news as unbiasedly as we possibly can. And just like those brave, courageous journalists, who while grieving the death of their colleagues, rushed across the street from their bloodied newsroom (crime scene) and put out a newspaper the next day, that is what we do – even under fire: we deliver the news at any cost and damn it, we will not be deterred.

Everybody’s personal i-dentity is developed and maintained in relation to one’s origins. People long to know of their heritage in order to move on in life and reach a fulfilling future.

If one’s ancestry is a sour-ce of shame, one may either get stuck in that knowledge and condition, cover it up, or be more determined to transcend all adversity or inadequacy, and make progress toward a more meaningful future.

By the same token, if one’s past is glorious, if one descends from an illustrious family line, one may reap corresponding laurels. Yet, if studying the ancestors’ history one discovers hidden flaws amidst victories,

serious problems left unresolved, or other vital issues requiring more adequacy - addressing all this can still contribute to a fulfilling present and promising future.

Soren Kierkegaard, the 19th century Danish philosopher, stated that “we live forward, but we can only think backward.”

Indeed, mistakes are normally not corrected while they are happening, but only much later, from the perspective of careful observation and gradual recognition of what can be improved. Action then follows!

The word “roots” in this context, reflects our desire to learn whence we have come, who we are, where we have been, what are we becoming, what prompts us

into motion, what keeps us going, and what kind of obstacles we have already successfully overcome. Most of all, it also points to where we are now; is it the right place? Are we in step with God’s purpose for our life?

All these questions are essential because people can learn from failure and, at the same time, be stimulated into greater achievements based on lessons learned, and in view of past successes enjoyed as well!

God’s blueprint is ever before us!

taking the right steps leading him there!

Regardless of what identity you may have acquired from your family, on account of the education received, via a professional life maintained, by the status attained in society - all this and much more may not avail you in manifesting your true identity!

Ultimately, what truly matters is what you are doing with who you are and with all you have. Throughout your entire earthly journey, you are in the process of perpetual becoming. With God’s help, always seek to be the best that you can be!

Working Hard – For The Right Reasons

Nat King Cole Show at the Wick Theater On a wet and soggy Saturday evening, I attended the Nat King Cole show at the Wick Theater starring Donny Ray Evins. What a marvelous entertainer who sounded and looked so much like Nat King Cole. The audience loved the show as well and gave him a standing ovation.

Jeff was the new CEO of a chain of jewelry stores. One of his first challenges was to evaluate the performances for all of the national chain’s branches. As he was reviewing the results for each branch with his executive team, he became puzzled about one particular store.

This had been company’s best performing store, but suddenly it had become the worst! When Jeff asked his team why this was so, he received a surprising response: “Oh, that’s Tim’s store. He was our best operator until he found the Lord.” Jeff, himself a follower of Jesus Christ, became dismayed upon hearing this and determined to investigate the dramatic shift in performance immediately.

When he met with Tim, Jeff was blunt and uncompromising: “As a Christian, I expect you to work hard to be our best store, not our worst. I would expect for you to give no less than 100 percent, as working for the Lord, rather than just for our company.” He was referring to a Bible passage that states, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:2324).

There is a tendency – and a temptation – to regard ourselves as working solely for the enterprise that employs us, and because of that, some people are content to do as little as they can get away with. As ambassadors for Jesus Christ, part of our witness for Him is not the words we express, but the quality and commitment we give to the work set before us. Followers of Jesus should be known for working diligently in the workplace.

Writing to Christ followers in the ancient city of Thessalonica, the apostle Paul said, “We worked night and day in order not to be a burden to anyone while we preached the gospel of God to you” (1 Thessalonians 2:9). He had an important message to communicate – the Good News of Jesus Christ – but Paul never forgot the virtues of hard work and demonstrating a believer’s commitment to excellence. Here are some other biblical principles:

Work as hard as you can while you can. There will be a time when we cannot work, whether due to retirement, disability, or ultimately, our passing from this life. So we should regard the work we have to do as a privilege, not a burden.

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom“(Ecclesiastes 9:10).

Do well at whatever work you are assigned, regardless of what it is.

Taking another look at Colossians 3:23, it is helpful to realize Paul was not writing to top executives or high-performing salespeople. Recipients of his letter were mostly doing mundane, even disagreeable tasks, such as shoveling manure. So when he instructs them, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart,”he is telling them, “It does not matter what you have to do; give it your best effort regardless.”

Our work is part of God’s divine purpose for us. Work may be difficult, and at times unpleasant, but from the start, God’s intent was for us to serve Him and others through our work. “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).

Center for Early Learning at PBSC Closes; New Plans for the Facility

Palm Beach State College is developing plans to convert the former Center for Early Learning at the Palm Beach Gardens campus, which closed this month, into a Center for Innovation in Health Sciences.

Current plans are to relocate three existing high-demand career programs to the facility: Ophthalmic Medical Technology, Sonography and Respiratory Care. College administrators said relocating the programs from the BioScience Technology Complex and the Lewis Center would create much-needed space in those buildings.

The administration decided last fall to close the Center for Early Learning effective June 15, 2018. The center had been providing high-quality early care and education since January 2001.

President Ava L. Parker, J.D., said closing the center was a “tough, yet

necessary decision” and not a reflection of the quality of care and education it provided. The decision followed a review of financial data for several years and a $1 million cut in the 2017-2018 fiscal year budget. Parker said it was among several tough decisions the administration made to prioritize the funding of academic and student-focused programs.

“During its more than 17 years, Palm Beach State College’s Center for Early Learning exemplified the very best in early care and education, providing PBSC families and the Palm Beach Gardens community with a nurturing, high-quality environment for their young children,’’ she said.

The new plans for the facility were presented to the District Board of Trustees this week. However, the board will receive formal recommendations in the coming months.

John Roberts, MD, MBA, Joins Staff at Boca Raton Regional Hospital

Boca Raton Regional Hospital today announced the appointment of John Roberts, MD, MBA, to the medical staff of the Eugene M. & Christine E. Lynn Cancer Institute and BocaCare® Physician Network at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. Dr. Roberts is a boardcertified thoracic surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery, including thoracoscopy, robotic surgery and other surgical treatments of lung and esophageal cancers.

Dr. Roberts earned his medical degree with honors from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut and earned his Masters of Business (MBA) at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. His postgraduate training included an internship and residency program in surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where he served as chief resident in surgery and completed an oncology and trauma fellowship. Dr. Roberts went on to complete an additional residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, affiliate of Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

Late Push for a Tying Goal Comes Up Short, Boca Raton FC Fall 3-1 to Palm Beach United

On Tuesday night, the Boys in Blue played host to Palm Beach United in what was Boca Raton FC’s last home game of the 2018 NPSL season. Despite a second-half surge to find an equalizer, Boca Raton came up short, falling 3-1.

Palm Beach United started the game on the front foot, enjoying the majority of possession in the early stages of the game. In the 11th minute, Palm Beach opened the scoring, heading home from about eight yards out. Both the cross and the headed effort were well placed, giving Boca Raton goalkeeper Michael Stone little chance to intervene.

After the goal, the Boys in Blue grew into the game and began creating scoring opportunities of their own. Boca Raton’s best chance of the first half came in the 25th minute as Matheus Ayrolla’s shot from inside the six-yard box was blocked by the Palm Beach United goalkeeper.

In the 33rd minute, Alec McKinley was forced off by a sprained ankle and replaced by Austin Lukasik.

Boca Raton FC went into the break trailing 1-0, with Palm Beach’s early goal separating the two sides.

As the teams took the field to kick off the second half, Boca Raton made one substitution, with Alex Norton coming on for Gabriel Diniz.

The Boys in Blue started the second half strongly. In the 48th minute, Giovanni Amoroso placed a low cross near the penalty spot, but a Palm Beach United defender intercepted the cross and cleared it before a Boca Raton attacker could get on the receiving end.

In the 64th minute, coach Rooney made an attacking-minded substitution, with Gabriel Bravo replacing Filip Guhr. Seconds later, center-back Kevin Byrne fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the Palm Beach United goal, bringing Boca Raton FC within one goal of the visitors.

Boca Raton maintained possession for nearly the entirety of the game’s final 25 minutes, vehemently pursuing a second goal.

With 15 minutes remaining, Alec-Michael Petrizzi came on for João Victor.

Boca Raton’s best chance to even the score came in the 77th minute as Austin Lukasik’s shot from 30 yards out flew just inches over the crossbar.

Palm Beach United secured all three points by scoring in the 90th minute to make it 3-1.

After the game, goalscorer Kevin Byrne said, “Scoring a goal always gives the team a lift. After scoring, we began to press them more and won a lot of second balls, keeping the pressure on them. Our coach made some good substitutions, which helped the team to play with more intensity in the second half.”

Head coach Jim Rooney described his view of Boca Raton’s secondhalf surge: “Our first half was not good enough. In the second half, we made some adjustments and the players came out and played excellently. I think we took the game to them in the second half, but we just need to put a full 90 minutes together.”

On Saturday, Boca Raton FC will travel to Miami Gardens to take on Miami FC in the last game of the NPSL season.

Seitz Starts New Initiatives to Boost PBSC Athletics

In just six months on the job, Athletics Director Tom Seitz has implemented several new initiatives to raise support for all Palm Beach State College sports programs and to ensure athletes get the academic help they need.

Seitz, the former commissioner of The Crossroads League in Indianapolis, recently started a Panther Athletic Club to help the community become more aware and involved in PBSC athletics.

Anyone is welcome to join the club. Membership fees range from $50 to $250. Members will receive email updates, invites to tailgate parties, signed team posters with schedules and more. The club also will help raise funds for scholarships, facility enhancements and equipment.

Seitz is also working to create a PBSC Athletics Hall of Fame to recognize outstanding alumni who excelled in athletics while at PBSC and/or later proved to be successful in life. The Hall of Fame will also recognize supporters, coaches and staff who significantly contributed to the development of the athletic program.

“Through these initiatives, we’re hoping to get more people excited about our programs,” said Seitz. “We’re also hoping to secure additional funds to cover costs that our normal operating budget might not, such as for VertiMax equipment that currently assists our athletes in strength, speed and resistance training. It will also help us be able to invest in the future of our athletes and the program.”

Seitz also wants PBSC’s more than 75 student athletes to have as much academic support as possible. To help provide that, he hired Taylor Wright as the new athletic specialist earlier this month. In the past, the position was mainly administrative. Seitz has now designed it to also help athletes stay on course academically.

“We really want those athletes who

desire to transfer to a university after their first two years be selected at the school of their dreams. Academics play a vital role in that,” Seitz said.

In the role, Wright will coordinate academic and life skills workshops and organize small group tutoring.

Wright, a native of Southern California, already has experience doing this type of work. She was formerly the academic support and compliance specialist at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Ill. There, she implemented a successful academic support program for 150 student athletics in 15 men and women’s sports teams. She also helped increase student athlete graduation and transfer rates by 30 percent, created a student athlete handbook and coordinated small group tutoring.

“The program I created at Oakton was based on encouraging students to strive for academic success and to also provide them with tools to help them reach those goals,” said Wright, who says mentoring athletes is one of her passions. “I want to continue that tradition at PBSC, and I look forward to building a successful program under Tom’s leadership.”

Seitz has already seen many PBSC athletes reach the goal to play for a four-year university. This spring, 27 athletes signed to play this fall at schools including Virginia Tech, Valdosta State, the University of Florida, the University of New Orleans and Arkansas State. Ten are baseball players, two are softball players, three are from women’s basketball, seven are in volleyball, and five in men’s basketball. Women’s basketball player Caitlyn Smith has signed to play for Cornell University, one of eight Ivy League schools.

“We are proud of these athletes, and I look forward to building on this success in the coming years,” Seitz said.
