City Council To Hold Hearing For Wildflower Usage By Aaron Tefel This coming July, the Boca Raton City Council will hold a hearing about plans to develop a waterfront restaurant for downtown Boca Raton. The 2.27 acre property, which is located at 551 E. Palmetto Park Road, is the subject of being made into a Hillstone restaurant. Discussions of a proposed plan to build the property into a Hillstone restaurant have been going on since 2012. The property used to be the host of a nightclub in the 80’s called Wildflower, but has been vacant ever since it closed down. The city of Boca Raton proceeded to purchase the property back in 2009 for $7.5 million.

The City of Boca Raton gets a nice cut because of the wise decision by voters in 2003 to annex it. The company will have about 100 employees at the new headquarters with the expectation of another 50 being added in the next two years. The new headquarters gives Orangetheory Fitness close access to the Tri-Rail commuter rail, which is located off Yamato Road. This centralized locale can be viewed as a plus since its employees live throughout South Florida. Orangetheory will have a studio in the building (which will be open to the public) to test new equipment and exercise routines. • Mizner Park is considering signs letting drivers know how many spaces are left in each It could have been a rain-out, but Mother Nature cooperated and the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Golf Classic at Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club was played. Community City Council To Hold Hearing For Wildflower Usage By Aaron Tefel With people being excited for the promise that a new waterfront restaurant holds for the city of Boca there are those who would rather use the land as a green space or park. That being said, while there seems to be a good trend at the moment for developing the property into a Hillstone restaurant, there have been several times where the plans for making the establishment have fallen through. More recently back in October of 2015, Hillstone pulled their offer out for the property as talks were not going as smoothly at the time. This decision at the time had some citizens of Boca being more persistent that the city council rethink about the idea of developing the area into a park or even a space that boaters could utilize like docks.

However, the Boca Raton City Council turned down the idea at the time citing that the cost to safely develop a temporary park would be $313,500. Additionally, the issue with creating docks immediately is the fact that the city council is still waiting on the results from seagrass testing that is currently underway. The results from these tests will be available in the coming weeks. While the concept of developing the property into a park might seem counterintuitive to Hillstone’s plans moving forward, talks of creating a dock on the property are not. Hillstone does not mind the construction of a dock as long as it doesn’t interfere and obstruct the view of the intracoastal. Until the final hearing on July 26, citizens of Boca Raton will be waiting eagerly to see what the concrete plans for the former Wildflower property will be.

Boca Raton’s Swim & Racquet Center To Be Extended and Redesigned By Veronica Haggar and Alyssa Lamp The Greater Boca Raton Beach & Park District continues in its development plans of making much needed improvements to the Swim & Racquet Center.

Some of the new changes that guests will be able to enjoy at the new facility include multi-purpose rooms to accommodate summer camp programs, first aid training, and community meetings. Additionally, there will be improved locker rooms and restrooms, a tennis pro shop, increased parking availability, and a toddler-friendly pool. More amenities will include ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) restrooms, improved facilities, a splash pad, and covered picnic areas. The budget includes $2,775,000 for the whole project. According to Boca Raton architect, Douglas Mummaw, the new center will have a classic design with a Mediterranean look. The original Chuck’s Steakhouse building

is being demolished and a new community center is being built in its place. “The tennis center is being remodeled and extended,” said Mummaw. “We are also constructing a new maintenance office and groundskeeping building.” During construction, members and guests will still have access to some parts of the center. “Some parts will be closed during certain phases of construction, but for the most part we plan to keep as much of the center open as possible,” said Mummaw. The Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District’s Assistant Director, Briann Harms, said the additions to the center will cause no change in the membership fee. The membership for residents will remain $25.00 for children, $85.00 for adults, $108.00 for couples, and $127.00 for families for the swim center only. Other prices can be found on the Swim and Racquet Center’s website page. Mummaw discussed how there are still discussions going on about how the board plans to maximize the buildings to their full potential. There have not been any major changes since the original plan besides some small details. The main problem the board faced was the painting of the building. Two options were put on the board. Option A “includes a soft palate, some tans, some terracotta’s, with coquina detailing,”

High School Theater Students Take Home Cappies Awards

High school theater students from 14 public and private schools throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties took home awards from the 14th Annual Cappies Awards Gala held on May 24 in the Au-Rene Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland received the most awards with seven. The most honored play was Falling produced at American Heritage School while there way a two-way tie for the most honored musical between Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Boca Raton Community High School) and Shrek (Stoneman Douglas High School). Award winners are determined by votes from the students through a weighted peer review voting process. Nominations are made by student critics from participating schools who attend productions at rival schools and write reviews, which are then edited by theater educators and published on FloridaTheaterOnStage.com. The students who were recognized as Senior Critic, Lead Actor in a Play, Lead Actress in a Play, Lead Actor in a Musical, Lead Actress in a Musical and Stage Management and Crew each received a $500 scholarship. Additionally, two scholarships were awarded to three Cappies nominees who submitted an application detailing their goals in pursuit

of future education and a biographical essay describing their experiences in the program. Two Melinda Clarke Spotlight scholarships which funds $750 for college or future theatrical training were awarded to Taylor Barth and Carlo Feliciani. One Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training scholarship that funds tuition, room and board for one session at Stagedoor Manor in Loch Sheldrake, NY was given to Hagan Oliveras. Etai Benson and Randi Kleiner, the first ever recipients of the South Florida Cappies for Lead Actor and Actress in a Musical held in 2003, returned to host the Gala this year. The awards ceremony was presented with support from the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, which has hosted the event since the South Florida chapter of the Critics and Awards Program (Cappies for short) was founded in 2002 as a part of the national non-profit organization honoring high school theater programs. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. AutoNation, Bank of America, Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau, LATAM AIRLINES, MasterCard, Paramount Refreshment Solutions, Rick Case Automotive Group and Sun Sentinel are proud sponsors of the Broward Center.

Mummaw said. “If you drive around our community these are formal, recognized attributes.” Option B is a slightly more dramatic design which would consist of richer terracotta and brown articulated tile. Mummaw presented the options to the board for their opinion of what they preferred more. The board was worried that Via Verde would not approve of the tile on the front side of the building. However, many members told Mummaw he should completely take off the tile and present that to Via Verde, then go back later and maybe

add the tile. Other members are concerned though due to the back-and-forth nature of possibly removing and then putting back on the tile, where they believe it will take more time to get things done. This is due to some wanting the construction to get done at a reasonable time. Construction on the redesigns to the Swim & Racquet Center will likely start in November and last up to a year.

Making our Community a Better Place For many graduating high school seniors, the prospect of shelling out tens of thousands of dollars for a college education is daunting. And thanks to a local scholarship foundation that is trying to keep students on a path to success after high school, 28 area students are heading off to college in the fall, and some as early as this week. Each graduate - from one home school and eight public and private high schools in Boca Raton and Delray Beach - received four-year scholarships from the Eda and Cliff Viner Community Scholars Foundation, Inc. A panel of judges interviewed 64 applicants and selected the best, brightest and neediest. Along with the scholarship, they were paired with volunteer mentors who will work with them over their four years in college. This program, in its second year, will teach the students responsibility and hold them accountable. To be in compliance with their scholarship, they must contact their mentors every week. This is a huge investment for these local professionals who were screened and completed a two-hour orientation. Several are first-time mentors. Others, including me, are old hands.

I like the Viner scholarship program because it eliminates one potential college entrance barrier for good students — cost — and attempts to motivate high schoolers to keep their grades up. High school graduates who have at least a 3.0 average and have demonstrated they are academically ready for college-level math and English courses are eligible for the scholarships. Currently, annual costs for tuition, room and board at an “affordable” state school range between $15,000 and $28,000. Even those who qualify for financial aid from the state, the federal government and the university itself can find themselves paying up to $18,000 per year. To date, the program has given 46 local young men and women an opportunity to get a college education. “The Viner Scholarship has helped me tremendously in my first semester of college,” Lauren Brito wrote. “By financially assisting me in the cost of my classes, materials, and more, this scholarship has relieved much stress and burden from my family and I, which allowed me to focus even more on school, and end up getting all A’s in my first semester.” Another scholar, Megan Rahnama, has been volunteering as a researcher for Limbitless Solutions at the University of Central

Florida to create efficient prosthetics for children. The pool of recipients reflects the community. Twelve are white, there are seven blacks, six Hispanics and three are Asians. Several of them are first in their families to pursue a post-secondary education. Many are the sons and daughters of locals who have worked all their adult lives in low-wage jobs. And for many, this scholarship will ease the financial burden. The foundation also partners with a handful of local agencies and organizations to provide additional resources to help the students and their family members. In fact, this past year, those resources helped a parent who lost a job, a family that needed legal guidance and another family that needed special services for a disabled relative. “The Viner Foundation understands what college students go through so by also providing a thoughtful mentoring system, I have someone I can always go to that can connect with me and guide me on a different level than my friends and family,” Brito continued. “Knowing that I have so many resources to help me succeed has truly made me a better, happier, more confident, and even more excited college student. I am so blessed and grateful to be a part of such a phenomenal program.”

On Sunday I attended the awards banquet at Boca West where, quite deservingly, these honorees were treated as royalties. Motivational speaker and success coach Michael Rosenfeld encouraged the scholars to discover themselves as they begin the next chapter of their lives. Rosenfeld also did an upbeat bonding session with them a few weeks earlier at the Lifetime Athletic Club where the mentors met their protégées for the first time. The highlight of Sunday’s event was U.S. Rep. Ted Deutsch, D- Boca Raton, who challenged them to find their own “moonshot”. “Find a goal that you never thought would be possible, commit yourself to it,” he told them. “Find a passion that drives that ambition and if it was not clear to you when you came here tonight, that passion is going to be strengthened by your mentors and by this community.” Improving the quality of life in our area, especially for our youth, is a commendable deed. Eda & Cliff Viner, Carolyn Blake Goldman and all those responsible for this program deserve recognition for reaching out to outstanding local students with praise and financial support. Well done!

POSITIVE LIVING By Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr.

“Mirror, Mirror on the Wall!” In contemporary society, it’s extremely rare that any individual would bypass a mirror before starting the day in the presence of others. A mirror helps us see that we want to look to the outside world in the way we prefer and planned. One’s personal confidence is enhanced when a mirror reveals and confirms what we desire to see! One problem, however, is that any mirror will only show one’s external appearance, for it cannot display a person’s inner condition. Yet, the way one feels on the inside inevitably is also manifested on the outside, at least in part. And that is a work which

depends only on one’s self, not anybody else. Cosmetics, as effective or costly as these products might be, cannot really conceal one’s internal disposition unless a disciplined life, a positive outlook, and a healthy mind totally devoid of worries and guilt, will help convey a sense of serenity, and the inner beauty should be there! Nobody can bestow beauty on another. The truism that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is not always true, although some persons may recognize genuine beauty where others don’t! It’s true that one can

acknowledge characteristics of true beauty in a person, apart from what any cosmetic wonder is capable of producing! Whenever true beauty is perceived in another, it’s not exclusively physical in nature but just as potent and real. True beauty usually stems from within and is manifested outwardly, as other lives are attracted to a beautiful person, and tend to gravitate in that individual’s direction! Be sure that consistently you recognize factors in your life that must be improved, attitudes which require change, besides other positive gestures which will accentuate what

attracts you to others, as those desirable qualities, far more than mere looks or other extras keep you as an attractive personality. Beauty in humans is a feature that can be perennially restored, as each strives for a positive posture in all actions which are observed by many, and impact quite a few! As you look in the mirror each day, be grateful for what you see, and continue making the inner and outer improvements which decisively contribute to your influence in society, and offer the personal satisfaction you are entitled to enjoy in daily life!

Dr. Synesio Lyra, Jr. is a Florida resident who, for many years, was a professor at the post-graduate level. He is a writer, a sought-after conference speaker, a man who lived in five continents of the world, having received his education in four of them. When he resided in southern California, he wrote a weekly column for the daily “Anaheim Bulletin,” which was carried for about six years, until he moved to south Florida.

Boca Raton Man Killed in South Carolina Skydiving Accident By CRA News Service An experienced Boca Raton skydiver was killed when he collided with another skydiver midair at a skydiving festival in South Carolina around sunset Saturday, authorities said. Bond Springer’s body was found in a wooded area of Chester County not far from the Chester Municipal Airport around 8:52 a.m. Sunday, almost 14 hours after the team jump from an airplane went fatally wrong, according to news reports. “Our community is saddened by the loss of a community member and choose to take this time to remember him quietly,” a spokesman for Skydive Carolina, a skydiving business in Chester, which sponsored the event, wrote in an email from the Charlotte Observer in response to a request for an interview. The other skydiver, Avalon Wolf, 23, of Palmetto Bay, Miami-Dade County, deployed his main parachute and landed about 14,000 feet below. He was taken by EMS to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, South Carolina with a severe broken leg, according to the Chester County Sheriff ’s Office. Authorities could not locate Springer, 32, after no one saw him land. Searchers had to call off their efforts to find him as storms rolled into the area, and they resumed the

search at 7 a.m. Sunday, according to The Herald in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Rescue crews located his body shortly after. Both men were doing advanced wing suit maneuvers during the final day of the annual CarolinaFest, which featured specialized jump teams, when they collided in midair, the newspaper reported. “Both skydivers in the incident were experienced and were executing advanced wing suit maneuvers,” Skydive Carolina said in a statement. “No malfunction is believed to have occurred with any equipment and all was normal leading to the collision.” A wingsuit is a jumpsuit with sections of fabric or inflatables added under the arms and between the legs. The extra surface area may provide extra lift and slow the rate of falling. The reports did not say whether Springer had tried to release his parachute, but equipment malfunction is not suspected as a cause for Springer’s death, according to Skydive Carolina. Neither drugs nor alcohol was listed as a contributing factor. CarolinaFest is hosted by Skydive Carolina, which was established in 1986. The event attracts skydivers from around the world, according to the report from Skydive Carolina. This year’s event began May 31 and was scheduled to conclude Sunday at 7 p.m.

• The Gold Coast Tiger Bay Club will feature Donald Trump’s former butler, Anthony “Tony” Senecal, 11:30 a.m. June 8 at City Fish Market, 7940 Glades Road across from Turnpike exit. RSVP at GoldCoastTigerBayClub.Com now. Limited seating. Restaurant will be closed to the public for this private event. • Boca Business Connection meets 5:30 pm–6:45 pm at TD Bank, Powerline and Palmetto. Call Alan Feuerman, S FL Business Connections, (561) 674-4300. • A panel of local architects will be discussing downtown Boca’s architecture from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 8 at City Hall, 201 W. Palmetto Park Road. The discussion will focus on concepts found in the architecture of Addison Mizner and the creative reinterpretation of the Mizner tradition pursuant to Ordinance No. 4035. The roundtable is hosted by Mayor Susan Haynie and Community Appearance Board Chairman Juan Caycedo. The public is invited to attend. • The challengers to a controversial synagogue planned near downtown prevailed in one of three lawsuits against the city of Boca Raton when a judicial panel ruled the City Council was wrong to approve the project. • Mizner Park is considering signs letting drivers know how many spaces are left in each of its four free garages. Robb & Stucky, the furniture store that once stood where Lord & Taylor is now, is in the final approval stages for a new building on the vacant lot at 1353 N. Federal Highway. General Growth Properties proposed putting in technology that would alert Mizner Park drivers how many parking spaces were left on each floor. • A restaurant on the old Wildflower property may be a done deal. Boca Raton City Council is on summer hiatus. But before the usual one-meeting-a-month schedule through August, council heard Hillstone

Restaurant Group resubmit a lease proposal on the former Wildflower property on Palmetto Park Road at the Intracoastal Waterway. A request is tentatively on the June 9 Planning and Zoning meeting agenda to amend the land use map, and rezone the northern portion of 551 E. Palmetto Park Road from single-family residential to business district. The P&Z had a public hearing on the issue on April 9, 2015, according to city documents. City Council intends to vote at its July 26 meeting. The re-submittal doesn’t include more docks. But the city has said it’s amenable to building them near the site, based on a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assessment of the waterway in that area. • Palm Beach County commissioners agreed to pay three companies to stay in South Florida and expand their operations. Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of funding about $900,000 of roughly $9 million in state incentive packages. Those dollars are estimated to support expansion projects that would generate nearly 1,200 new jobs in targeted industries, such as biotech and aerospace. Median wages would span from $55,000 to $66,000, according to county documents. Commissioner Shelley Vana argued economic incentives are paying off for taxpayers, and safeguards are in place to ensure money is not paid out until jobs are created. • Palm Beach County posted its biggest single-year increase in government revenue in a decade, County Clerk Sharon Bock said during her annual financial report, adding that “the county’s financial health continues to improve.” The county’s total revenues reached $1.7 billion in the 2015 budget year, a 7 percent increase from the previous year. The county’s net position, which includes tax revenues, property values and other assets, rose by $171 million, reversing two years of declines in which the county spent more than it collected.

The 4 ‘C’s’ Of Effective Hiring

When employers hire someone, they often reverse the order of what I call the “4 C’s of Hiring”: Character, Calling, Competence, and Chemistry. Many search for those people with a good resume and experience for the position to be filled. Once the list of candidates is narrowed, many select the one they like the best. A better approach would be to hire for character first. Hiring someone with great competence but without Character could prove to be the worst mistake you could make. Poor character can permeate and destroy an entire organization. Competence is important, but a final decision should be based on the level of character revealed after background checks, interviews, and integrity testing. As 1 Corinthians 15:33 teaches, “Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” To emphasize Calling, one large corporation created a “pay-to-quit” program. Annually its “fulfillment center” employees get the opportunity to quit and get paid up to $5,000. The company has discovered the importance of calling, hiring those who are called, or feel passionate, about the organization’s mission. In John 6:65-66 Jesus provided an example: “(He) went on to say, ‘This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.’ From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.” Jesus disqualified many followers by clearly communicating His mission and giving them opportunity to leave. If you desire to hire the best, make your mission clear to them and eliminate those who do not have a sense of calling to the work.

After investigating someone’s character and determining whether they feel called and passionate about your mission, then selecting the most competent becomes a primary focus. Competence is third on my list because many skills can be taught if the right people have the desired character and passion. At the same time, finding and hiring the person with the best skills for the job will increase your company’s performance and ultimately, customer appreciation. Proverbs 22:29 teaches, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.” A resume of someone’s skills and work history can serve as a good starting point, but it would be wise to develop tests or brief work projects to determine someone’s true level of skill and competence. Lastly comes the fourth important hiring quality: Chemistry. At a conference I attended, I heard a story about the importance of hiring people with whom you have a good chemistry. The speaker’s father had narrowed down a hiring decision between two strong candidates for a key position within his organization. But he was having trouble deciding between them. This owner asked for his son’s opinion. The son’s insight was profound: “Dad, which one of the two will you enjoy being with the most as you journey together?” When selecting someone for a key position, it is wise to look for someone like-minded and with whom your team will likely enjoy working. As Proverbs 18:24 observes, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

sports Bogolii, Willig Earn ITA All-America Selections

Diana Bogolii and Rosalie Willig of the Lynn University women’s tennis team secured postseason honors on Wednesday with the announcement of the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America teams. Bogolii finished the season ranked 10th in Division II to nab All-America accolades in singles while teaming up with Willig for All-America honors in doubles as the No. 4 pairing in the nation. ITA All-Americans are determined by the final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. For singles, the athlete must finish in the Top-20 while doubles must have a Top-10 rank at the completion of the season. Bogolii co-led the squad with 18 singles wins, playing primarily at the No. 1 position, and closed out the season with an 8-1 record in the final 10 contests. In doubles, Bogolii and Willig posted a 17-4 record on the season as Lynn’s top tandem. Additionally, both were first team selections for singles and doubles from the Sunshine State Conference this season as well.

LICENSED & INSURED

Willig notches her second consecutive season as an All-American, earning recognition in both singles and doubles last year as a sophomore. The storied women’s tennis program now has 109 All-America selections and has had at least one individual claim both singles and doubles honors in the same season for the ninth consecutive year. Sophomore Grace Mpassy closed out the year with an 18-5 singles mark, making a 17-spot jump up in the final national rankings to No. 21 but missing All-America recognition by just one position. Willig, who suffered only two singles losses on the year, finished 27th individually. As a team, the Fighting Knights moved up to the No. 4 spot after spending the entire 2015-16 campaign ranked fifth. National champions Armstrong State claimed the top ranking, followed by BYU-Hawaii and Saint Leo in front of Lynn. Regionally, Lynn is slated No. 2 in the South Region with Bogolii (5), Mpassy (8) and Willig (10) ranked in singles and Bogolii/Willig tabbed No. 2 in doubles.

Boca Raton FC Falls 2-0 in Closed-Door Scrimmage Versus Jamaican National Team Boca Raton Football Club took another huge step in the right direction on Monday, May 30th as the club took on the Jamaican National team as the Reggae Boys made its finals preparations for the Copa America Centenario. “Playing a team like Jamaica was huge for us,” said Head Coach Pedro Yunes. “We kept our shape during the entire match, and were able to have some quality counter attacks versus the strongest opposition we will face all season.” Jamaica scored two goals in the first half, but in the second half both Boca Raton and Jamaica seemed evenly matched, even with Jamaica playing with a handful of starters in the second half.

“It was a quality match by us,” said captain Shane McInerney. “We will take this loss like a win and continue to move forward during the APSL Season as we focus on Uruguay Kendall for our Home Opener on June 11.” Boca Raton FC will not play this weekend in APSL action, and will resume its title defense next week June 11 in an APSL Championship Finals Rematch as Uruguay Kendall comes to Lynn Univerity’s Bobby Campbell Stadium to take on Boca Raton in their Home Opener. Tickets are only $10 for the game and can be purchased at www.bocaratonfc.com/ tickets.
