e’ve all heard that old saying, “What you focus on is where you drive your energy.” But do you really take that to heart? Think about all the “things” you drive your energy toward during a typical workday. Are you wasting your time focusing on the unnecessary? I call these moments “time suckers.” When was the last time you took inventory and focused on your passion, your driving energy, the “why” of what you have created and what it is you do? If you can’t remember, I’m challenging you to take inventory of where you’re spending your time and if any results are coming from these time suckers. If you suddenly realize the daily actions you’ve put into place are yielding the same results—and not the ones you’re looking for—YOU must redirect your energy and do things differently. We choose who we become. We choose to be purposefully driven, protect our time with boundaries, schedule our days to work on the things in our business that are the most important. We do this by focusing on the “one” thing that fuels our business. In Lead Up for Women that one thing is “exposure.” The more you step into the spotlight, the more you’re seen and not overlooked. Your influence expands and you attract more clients. Attracting clients is the one thing most of us need to run our business. Wouldn’t you agree? Remember, your existence is not by accident. Your existence has so much meaning. Are you ready to be extraordinary? Take on the unknown and leap into your Zone of Excellence? Bask in your Zone of Genius? Are you prepared for it? If you’re waiting— waiting for all of the situations to come together perfectly—I’m here to tell you no one is coming? No one is aligning your present or your future to be perfect for you. YOU must create your reality, seize opportunities and leap into your genius. You’re the only you that has ever been and the only you that will ever be. Be you and be strong, because you are brilliant and the world needs you. All the members of Lead Up for Women are here to offer you support and sisterhood to leading your best life and the journey starts today. I’d like to thank each and every one of you who believes in our mission, who believes in the vision that women can lift each other without competition or judgment and will expand in abundance, success and love, then, in turn, inspire others to do the same. We are all sisters in this world, and in order to create more jobs and clear more pathways for women to shine in leadership, we must band together and blaze the trails. Who’s with me? I have faith in each of you that we can begin to build the blueprint necessary to create lasting change for women. Join us. With Gratitude,

he stats can be daunting. Research shows that 21.5% of startups fail in the first year, and 30% fail in the second year. Those numbers came before the challenges many businesses had adjusting to the pandemic, and before increased attention to diversity and inclusion. Rather than viewing these numbers as a stop sign, I’d encourage business leaders to view them as an opportunity. Throughout my career, I’ve been the one at the table nobody was expecting. As a female who has held various leadership positions in male-dominated organizations, I was used to some coworkers being surprised that I was often in the center of the conversation, failing to stay on the sidelines or be introverted,

ready to jump in with ideas and put them into action. I love getting my hands dirty in the details, working to build something from the ground up. It’s why I left a successful career in the corporate world to serve as a business consultant and mentor to startups and small business leaders—
Through this consulting role, I’ve come to believe that business failure is rooted in the fact that some founders are so focused on the product they overlook what their clients want. Now more than ever, customers want products and services that match a true need in their life—items that offer an understandable, convenient solution. When you identify a product or solution that matches a customer’s need, it’s hard to not want to see it through. That’s what happened to me not long before the pandemic. In 2019, along with my co-founder, Michael Zalle, we built YellowBird—an innovative, on-demand solution that provides access and assurance for contract workers in the environmental, health and safety (EHS) field. If you can find your next soulmate on an online dating platform, we believe you should be able to find your next client or dream job through an online professional matchmaking platform. YellowBird uses advanced technology to connect certified EHS professionals with companies in construction, manufacturing and other industries so the talent perfectly matches the goals and needs of the project. The idea stemmed from a trip in a ridesharing service where the driver was a highly qualified, certified safety professional, but was having trouble finding full-time employment. A lot of companies just wanted someone with the required certification for a specific project, rather than year-round. We saw an opportunity to connect highly specialized professionals to a gig job, solving a real problem for employers and freelancers.
March-April 2021
While we started strong in the early days of the pandemic, the lockdown hurt many businesses, including ours. As a startup, we couldn’t wait for the pandemic to end; we had to adjust and adapt. This prompted us to add a range of consultation and training services for small businesses, churches and schools onto the platform. We also added a “COVID Return-to-Work Program,” which is designed to help company leaders welcome back employees and customers safely. Our ability to seek out solutions and quickly pivot helped YellowBird survive when many other startups failed. By prioritizing and strengthening relationships with our team members, we addressed a true need in the industry. We became involved in finding solutions for businesses during the pandemic— an effort that incited significant results long-term, as we have gained the trust of employers and consultants. Your business can do the same.
Pivoting your attention to turn a negative situation into a positive one, can help you create unexpected and successful solutions. Survival Tips When COVID-19 hit the US, businesses had to scramble for strategies to stay open. Restaurants used carry-out and delivery services to maintain connections with regular customers. Movie theaters sold popcorn to go. Gyms rented equipment and offered online exercise classes. But for many small businesses, like ours, the solutions were less obvious. Even though we were less than a year old, we were forced to take a fresh look at what we were doing and how we were being received. These strategies worked for us. In fact, they can not only help any business survive, but also thrive during the pandemic.
Be flexible — As breaking news and studies revealed more information about the pandemic, being flexible helped us change direction by re-matching the professionals on the YellowBird platform. Other businesses may need to reschedule events or reprioritize projects to adapt to the constantly changing situation, but staying flexible helps you stay in control and open up new opportunities. Pivot fast — Pivoting your attention to turn a negative situation into a positive one can help you create unexpected and successful solutions. Consider focusing on what employees and customers

need, or how to utilize their amazing skills and experience to be a part of the solution. For example, our company’s “COVID Return-to-Work” protocol expanded our services to industries we had never considered. And by the end of 2020, 22% of our revenue was a direct result of these changes. Be creative with new employees — Many businesses cannot do an in-person orientation, but it’s still important to make new employees feel welcome and get excited about their job. Try making a virtual orientation feel more friendly by delivering lunch and taking a socially distant team photo. Not only will business leaders successfully introduce the new member to their team, but they bring happiness to the new employee’s first day.
Diversity and inclusion within a team can help promote ideas that become the solutions needed to increase business and move toward a brighter future. Cash is king — There is a great pool of financial resources that exist for businesses from the governments, associations and lending institutions. We recommend all businesses take time to research what aid they qualify for and dedicate time to getting it done. Have some fun — During this stressful time, let employees have some fun. At YellowBird, we started a new tradition of #SpicyMondays, where we dress up to themes such as Sesame Street or Western wear. Business leaders in any industry can do something similar or schedule a virtual happy hour to let their employees relax. This encourages everyone
to have fun logging into work and express themselves. Seek additional ways to communicate — Businesses need strong communication to stay focused on shared goals. Consider expanding your team’s communication outside of text or email by turning to Zoom for virtual meetings or Slack for easy direct messaging throughout the day. While the pandemic disrupted our daily routines and processes, businesses had to continue. The pandemic revealed how important creativity, adoption and innovation were for leaders to find solutions to the problems that arose.
Where do you get creative, adaptive and innovative solutions? The answer is in your team and their experiences. If you build relationships with your team members and customers, listen to what they need and reflect on how to get better, you gain a deeper understanding and strengthen the business. Diversity and inclusion within a team can help promote ideas that become the solutions needed to increase business and move toward a brighter future. A team with diverse backgrounds can offer new perspectives and ideas to stay ahead of any problems they may be face. Business leaders must make active and conscious decisions to involve their teams and make them feel like they belong. My experience as a woman in corporate finance and startup industries, as well as Michael’s unique perspective, influenced our mission to make YellowBird a welcoming network that promotes equity and opportunity through action. For example, we offer free personal and general liability insurance to prevent experienced, skilled professionals from being excluded from great working opportunities. We also work hard to make sure everyone is paid fairly by setting a flat fee for a job, regardless of who gets it. This ensures someone is not paid more or less due to their gender, race or ethnicity. There are limitless possibilities for what business leaders can do. Consider ideas to offer special benefits to team members, host workshops and training that promote a positive work culture, or launch new features that are creative and efficient. I believe any business can be successful—even in a difficult period—if it focuses on the right goals. Take the time to build meaningful relationships, reflect on what your team and customers need instead of solely focusing on the product or service, and get involved to make effective solutions.

How I Booked 50 Virtual Speaking Gigs in a Pandemic
By Leisa Reid
Do you dream of speaking to audiences and making an impact? Can you imagine the stage, the audience, the applause? (Insert roar of the crowd here.) And then everything shutdown. What does this mean to you as a speaker? How do you still make an impact without being in front of a “live” audience on a “real” stage? I’m going to share what I did to book—and deliver—50 speaking gigs during the first seven months of the pandemic. Are you ready? Here’s the “big secret.” I did what I’ve done for years. Even though “everything has changed,” a lot is still the same. The secret to getting booked and staying booked is developing collaborative relationships with other speakers. That means treating people with kindness and respect, doing what you say you’re going to do, and following up and delivering a quality service. I kept all those activities at 100%. I maintained the strong partnerships I had prior to the pandemic, only this time we met on Zoom. I also developed new partnerships, as I had more time to network with people outside of my local area. All of sudden, a whole new world opened up, and it can for you, too. To help you get started, here are six strategies to rocking it as a virtual speaker:
No. 1 — Get Your Talk Ready to Rock In order to be booked and claim that “speaker title,” you must have an attractive talk title, talk description, and three to five learning points. In order to “virtualize” your talk, you may want to consider using a presentation software like PowerPoint or Canva to keep the audience’s attention. Virtual audiences typically are

creating a branded virtual background (you can use a free version of Canva. com to do this). Second, get a green screen so you don’t have that “phantom” look where one arm disappears into the wall ($25). Third, purchase a webcam (typically under $150) rather than using the built-in camera on your computer. This will make a world of difference in the crispness of your image. Last, but not least, buy a “real” microphone. You want your sound to be professional. A very popular brand is Yeti (under $200). You never know when you’ll be “caught” on camera, so you want to be at your best. In April 2020, I was lucky enough to be on “CBS Morning News” and was very grateful for my professional virtual background.
No. 4 — Create a Virtual Call-to-Action Just like you would create a call-to-action in front of a live audience, you must have one for a virtual audience. Make sure you have your links ready in your presentation and to add in the chat. Your audience doesn’t want to wait around while you look for it. Pro Tip: When you type your link in the chat, it must have the “https://” in front of it so that it’s a clickable link. If you just type “www” it won’t be clickable, and people will need to copy/paste it. You want to have your call to action be as seamless as possible so that people can take action with no roadblocks.
Consistent, professional follow-up is the cornerstone to building your business and getting booked as a speaker. in front of their computers, so you’ll want to make your talk visually stimulating as well as engaging people in the chat.
No. 2 — Build Your Speaking Gig Pipeline Now is the perfect time to expand your reach. You can speak anywhere in the world with a click of a button. (Hint: This is a great opportunity to become a national or international speaker.) Leverage the opportunity of “No Borders.” Here’s what I asked for when I was looking for

groups in Canada to speak: “I’m looking for introductions to women’s networking groups in Canada. Do you have a recommendation of who I could connect with?” And guess what? I was introduced to many amazing women in Canada and I am now an international speaker. You can do this, too.
People are suffering from Zoom fatigue, so don’t add to the problem. Instead, be the engaging speaker they want to hear, address them by name, make connections and build rapport with your audience. Simple ways to do this include using the chat, watching their nonverbal communication, recognizing when people want to share or have a question, etc. People on Zoom are the same as people in-person. We all want to be seen, heard, loved and understood. That doesn’t change just because we’re virtual.
No. 3 — Be the Virtual Rockstar
No. 6 — Follow up
There are some budget friendly ways to look like a million dollars on camera. First, get well versed in
Consistent, professional follow-up is the cornerstone to building your business and getting booked as a speaker.
March-April 2021
The secret to getting booked and staying booked is developing collaborative relationships with other speakers.
I followed-up the same during the pandemic as I did pre-pandemic. What does that mean? It means I use a CRM (Client Relationship Manager) software that helps me keep track of who I need to connect with and when. For example, if someone introduced me to a person who needed a guest speaker, I would enter their information into the CRM to have a Zoom Meet & Greet. This meeting allowed us to determine if I was a fit for their organization. If we proceeded, we’d go through any necessary logistics to make sure the event was a success. I hope you’re pumped up and ready to “Rock It” as a speaker. After speaking to hundreds of audiences over the years, I can confidently say there are people who can benefit from your expertise. Your knowledge may be the very solution they need to solve their problems. There are more than enough opportunities for you to speak—yes, even now. Make the minor adjustments needed to increase your confidence and success as a virtual speaker so that you can continue to make the impact you were born to make.

Lead Up for Women
We have suffered the consequences of the absence of our Mother for thousands of years. By we, I don’t just mean women; I mean all of humanity— all life actually. The results of the subjugation of the feminine at a macro level include pollution of the Earth, climate change and eons of warring. At the micro or more personal level, we have four out of five girls being sexually assaulted before they were 18—boys who don’t feel safe to feel their emotions, a 50% divorce rate, domestic violence, depression, addiction, racism and sexism. Intuitively we’ve all felt we’ve been missing something. We sought to fill the hole with the love of our parents, our spouses, the achievement of that college degree, the fabulous career or whatever it is we find ourselves chasing to be validated by the outside world. But after years of never feeling we are “enough,” we turn to shopping, sex, drinking, gambling or eating to fill the void we just can’t explain. Our greatest fear is that it’s “just me.” We fear we’re the only one’s feeling this absence and we fear there must be something wrong with us. My first (remembered) hinting of the presence of the Divine Feminine was when I felt a knowing wash over me that my postpartum depression and my traumatic birth experience were wrong. Intuitively I knew that how I, and many women, were experiencing childbirth and postpartum was all wrong and not natural. I believed the pain and suffering didn’t serve us as mother’s, our new babies or our families. I was 25 years old then. I had no logical reason to think birth was a sacred, powerful event of two souls working together to bring fresh new life Earth-side. Like most women, I grew up hearing the horror stories of birth, the pain, the trauma and the desire to numb out the entire experience all together with pain medications because it’s “just too scary and painful.”
March-April 2021
But I knew, without knowing how I knew. I felt the wrongness of the traumatic birth experiences and I knew there had to be a better way. Even though I had no evidence. This knowing was the first step onto the path of my soul’s purpose. Soon, I would discover that pain in childbirth is learned. Learned. Pain in childbirth is not the natural state of childbearing. I would learn that women around the world in less industrialized countries had painless, uncomplicated and even pleasant birth experiences. This blew my mind. And at the same time I knew it to be true. I set about helping women to unlearn fear and pain in childbirth and when I witnessed my own clients confidently, joyously and painlessly giving birth—the way we are meant to—I had to wonder, “What else have we, as women, learned about ourselves that is not true and is actually causing us pain and anguish?”
Unfortunately, we’ve been taught the strengths of the Feminine are actually weaknesses. Many women are still hiding how intuitive or even psychic they are. A lot, as it turns out. As I worked with women over the next two decades, the answers to this life-changing question were rapidly revealed to me. It was as if the Divine Feminine was just waiting for me to ask. I discovered that what was true for me was also true for many women. And that was we struggle with self-love, self-confidence and trusting ourselves. As I dove deep into the psyches of my clients as well as my own, I realized that our lack of self-love and self-trust
stemmed from what I now call the four core wounds of shame, guilt, fear of rejection and the fear of abandonment. Just as we learned to fear the power of our bodies in childbirth, we also learned we are shameful and guilty, and this would eventually lead to being rejected and abandoned. Living from this “truth” was causing unnecessary pain and suffering in the lives of so many women. Conversely, just as learning to trust our body during birth would inevitably lead to peace, power and pleasure, we could

also learn the truth of who we are and discover the Divine Feminine within us, which too, leads to peace, power and pleasure. The Divine Feminine knows we are good, we are wanted, we are a blessing and we are loved. I call these the Four Divine Truths. We lose touch with them as we experience the traumas and dramas of life, and begin to believe we are shameful and guilty. To know the Divine Feminine is to know yourself and you begin to realize that you know without knowing why you know. You are intuitive, collaborative, cooperative, loving, magnetic, harmonious, powerful and nurturing. When you cultivate the Divine Feminine within you, you live your life in your natural rhythm of giving and receiving. You take action balanced with being receptive.
Activating and nurturing the Divine Feminine within you manifests your goals and dreams in a state of ease and grace. They become magnetized to you. Don’t think for a moment that it’s about meditating or wishing all day long. The Divine Feminine plans, prepares, takes inspired action, then she receives. She allows it to all come flowing in. Unfortunately, we’ve been taught the strengths of the Feminine are actually weaknesses. Many women are still hiding how intuitive or even psychic they are. They hesitate to trust themselves seeking

validation in those around them. Many fear being judged as being too “woowoo.” But I’m here to say that the power is in the woo-woo. It’s time for you to stand in your Divine Feminine and lead from your heart, which is why my daughter, Megan Camille and I co-founded the Sophia Mystery School for Extraordinary People.
As I worked with women over the next two decades, the answers to this lifechanging question were rapidly revealed to me. It was as if the Divine Feminine was just waiting for me to ask.
So that women and men could stop hiding from their Divinity and begin to cultivate it to create the lives they want. The Sophia Mystery School is the place our clients come every week to belong, re-energize and even cultivate their intuitive and other abilities. For those of us who have been woo-woo all of our lives, we haven’t fit in with the “mainstream world” and we’ve had to hide. The school provides our clients with courage to go out into the world fully authentic, confident and powerful so they can have the impact they were born to have.

Our brand believes great change happens when you bring together people of character, integrity, perspective, courage and grace. In fact, an absence of any of these qualities limits a person’s influence. Without character, a leader is unstable—prone to moral failure and internal destruction. Without perspective, a leader has no sense of direction and purpose. Without courage, a leader cowers at the sight of a big challenge. And without grace and heart, a leader cannot persuade others to take action and trust.

including financially, relationally, emotionally and spiritually. Typically, clients feel stuck or unfulfilled in life or business, or both. In some ways, they might feel lost. Many leaders are influencers, which begins with mastering the art of effective authentic communication. It’s just one area of our focus. Having worked alongside some of the most vulnerable members of society, as well as with several top world leaders, Nadene Joy brings first-hand experience to the table.
I checked all the boxes of what society deems successful. But what I didn’t realize was there was a silent void lurking deep inside of me. I couldn’t help thinking I wasn’t making a difference in the lives of others. I do what I do today so I can help others who are silently suffering. No matter how old you are, what career you are in, or what culture or religion you follow, we’re all in this journey together. We’re all connected by love and human connections.
Why do you do what you do?
What hurdles have you overcome being a woman in business?
I worked as an executive exploration geologist for several years, climbing my way to the top of the corporate ladder at a young age. I graduated top of my class in geology with honors and won several achievement awards. I mentored alongside a billionaire, and other top CEOs and leaders by the time I was 23 years old. I worked on oil rigs in the field, owned shares in a privately held company and accomplished more than I ever dreamed I would in my entire life by 30 years of age.
I’ve been a woman in a predominantly male profession—as a scientist and as executive exploration geologist in the corporate world, now as a leader and Director and board member of various organizations. As my career progressed, several things that stood out, which at times proved challenging. Being a female geologist meant sometimes working in harsh working environments such as on oil rig platforms. Working in an executive leadership role in my 20s, I
worked with an executive management team that was mostly men twice my age. Over the years, I learned to ask the difficult questions. I learned to challenge the status quo. As a woman, I needed to be strong, bold and courageous, to be myself and to shine, especially when difficult situations arose. As a woman and leader, and as my business grew globally, I occasionally encountered jealousy, bitterness, resentment and/or envy from especially other women which I learned to turn into blessings and an opportunity to help them fully see and acknowledge their worth and that there is no need for competition as there’s more than enough to go around. We all have unique gifts and experiences we’ve been through that helps transform a specific person, type of group or company in the world.
What do you do to give back? The areas I’m most passionate about as a Servant Transformational Authentic Leader and role model are: › Decreasing poverty and combating hunger › Decreasing the mental health stigma, and increasing wellness and suicide awareness and prevention, addictions and recovery › The empowerment of women, immigrants, refugees and children/ youth, celebrating diversity, humanitarian efforts › Working with global ministries, homeless shelters, orphanages and widows › Helping businesses thrive through entrepreneurship programs in countries around the globe
What are some of your biggest opportunities moving ahead? One of the biggest is to continue to expand into international and global markets. I want to overcome language and cultural barriers so that I can help more people and top leaders in areas where high-level resources and support are limited. A few examples of this are in my first book, “Uncover Your Purpose: Heal and Share Your Gifts With the World.” It has now been translated, printed and audio transcribed in Urdu in Pakistan, which was initially to help support a Youth Fellowship on a greater level. My

second book, “Love is ... A Guide to the Power of Love,” will also be translated into several different languages globally to help more people experience the healing power of God’s love. Other growth areas include 1) The global expansion of a Caribbean-themed “experiential” corporate wellness program to help break the stigma around mental health and address the gaps facing our society and corporations today. 2) Continued growth for online programs and support as well as 3) Continuing to internationally expand The Global Lead 2 Impact Summit to help many leaders and women untap their full potential from within.
Our focus is on deep-rooted solutions and helping bring people together to achieve their “sky is the limit” dreams and goals.
What’s your method to stay connected with other women in business? I continuously invest and schedule into my weeks the time required to network at events, online on social media, conduct keynote speaking presentations for various groups, non-profit sectors and organizations globally, and regularly have one on one outreach calls with other women in business and leaders in general.

Who has played an important role in your success? I honestly can say I would not be where I am today if it hadn’t been for all of the mentors and top leaders who have believed in me, even when I didn’t completely believe in myself.
How do you stay current with today’s trends? I do a lot of reading—books, magazines, research papers, LinkedIn posts, etc.— when I have time. I tend to talk to a lot of people around the world who fill me in on what’s going on current trends and events. I’m a firm believer the trends I need to know I will find exactly as I am supposed to.
What’s your growth plan? To continually grow and evolve. I want to become the best person and woman in leadership I can be in life and in business. I want to grow my businesses globally, while staying true, humble and aligned to my personal morals and values. The goal is to continue to unite a team of dedicated professionals and experts who will excel in the ability to utilize their gifts and talents to their fullest—to maximize positive impact and revenues for everyone involved moving forward.
What’s the most rewarding part of your career? Seeing others’ lives be completely transformed and watching people finally see the truth of who they are stepping boldly into living an unprecedented life of their dreams. Knowing you’re making that difference to someone or that you have the potential to save one person’s life is truly “priceless.” The real reward lies in the ability to develop and nurture meaningful lasting connections and to have real conversations of truth that matter.
Describe your perfect day. Wake up early and take time for myself. There would be no distractions. I’d begin with prayer/meditation and time with God, exercise and learning something new— something that inspires me. I’d eat breakfast with my family and have a dance party before my kids head to school. I’d love to take time for a walk, swim in the ocean and spend the remainder of the day helping others. I’d

Without perspective, a leader has no sense of direction and purpose. Without courage, a leader cowers at the sight of a big challenge. make sure to do something every day that pushes me outside of my comfort zone. I’d schedule time to meet with clients from around the world and network with new people. I’d attend regular community outreach events and fundraisers. After that, I would spend the rest of the day visiting extended family and/or relatives and working on my to-do list. At the end of the day, I’d unwind with a lavender bath, and reflect on all the amazing adventures and miraculous encounters that occurred and what I can do differently for the next day to make it even better for all.
including ourselves first. To let go of control and comparisons once and for all, and completely trust in your own individual journey and surrender all expectations of any preconceived outcomes of what you or society thinks your life is “supposed” to be like. Recognize there is no ceiling to success. That there is infinite potential within all of us. You must believe in yourself and know that anything is possible. Take at least one step forward each day toward living the life of your wildest dreams, no matter how big or small it may seem.
What’s the biggest item on your to-do list right now? It’s impossible to say just one. I’d say I’m always working toward stepping outside my comfort zone—going places I’ve never been and embracing every adventure to the fullest. That’s what motivates me.

To learn to forgive others on all levels,
March-April 2021
One-on-One with... Tell us about your family? I have four beautiful children— two boys and two girls, ages 12, 9, 7 and 6. Many of my children have received outstanding awards of leadership and excel in effort awards at school. There is zero pressure to be the best— it is about trying their best. I always tell my kids to “be all you can be in this lifetime, but always be yourself.” If we can teach our children to always follow who they are, have faith in themselves and in God’s plan, always try their best and have fun no matter what society or anyone else says about them, we have done our job as parents.
How do you prioritize your health, family and career? I set a schedule of time to focus on my business, time for family, friends and time for self-care for myself. I’ve found that what you learn in business can be carried over to all areas of life. I can’t state the importance of staying in balance. As women in leadership roles, it is easy to give out more energy, time and resources than we receive back to replenish our own cup.
What motivates you every day? If you were to ask me this question 15 years ago, my answer would have been significantly different. I used to push myself from external motivation. Now I’m driven purely by internal motivations. I’m motivated to show up as a real, authentic, transformational, servant
leadupforwomen.com
leader who makes a positive difference in many lives globally. I’m motivated that I’m unstoppable with God by my side, and consciously choose to live out my best life/day possible and start fresh again for the next day for 24 hours. I call it the 24/7 principle.
How do you tap into the power of YOU? By honoring the unique gifts I was given and taking time every day for myself in quiet reflection. I face my fears head on, valuing and honoring myself. I have an inner belief that everything I do is ultimately a choice I make from within, aligning with my mission and vision between the words I speak, my heart and actions. I learned how to tap into my full power when I fully acknowledged what differences are that this is one of my greatest strengths I possess as a leader.
Who and what inspires you? I’m most inspired by those who are real, create a positive impact, provide opportunities to help and serve others and who are living breathing exemplary role models who take action to make things happen.
What’s the best compliment you have ever received? That I am the best mom in the world.
What are your strongest traits as a leader? Who inspired you? I am a visionary—a passionate mindset strategist who is
real, authentic and compassionate. I am an empathetic leader who encourages positive strategic thinking, innovation and action—a master effective communicator with a high-level of resilience, integrity who brings hope, joy, unconditional love, care for all others, inspiration and a unique dynamic approach to life and businesses globally. I’m not afraid to stand up for something or someone I believe in and take bold action toward living my God-given purpose to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. Perhaps the greatest quality a leader can have is vision—the ability to see the big picture of where the organization, team, city, community or nation they are working within is headed, what it’s capable of, and what it will take to get there.
How are you mentoring/ sponsoring others? Through one on one and group strategy and clarity sessions, mentoring and advising as well as business, leadership and high-level executive strategist support sessions and corporate and individual wellness training.
What book are you reading now? “The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear” and “Take Life to the Next Level” by Gay Hendricks.
What are your favorite hobbies? I love anything in nature— hiking, walking, skiing, swimming, mountain biking. I love salsa dancing, music, travelling, adventures, new
experiences, including trying new delicacies and cuisines from around the world. I live for networking, personal development, meeting new people of diverse backgrounds, reading, spending time with my family, basketball, health, wellness and meditation/prayer practices.
How do you like to spend your down time? Practicing self-care, including exercising, regular prayer and meditation, learning a new skill or language, giving my time and skills back to those in need, relaxing alone or in the presence of my friends and family.
What was the best advice you ever received? To boldly live out my dreams and have no regrets in life. You have to have the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life expected by others. When you get to the end of your life, You must believe in you—if I can do this, so can you.
What does “Lead Up” mean to you? Lead Up means to always lead by example and to prepare the way today in the present moment for something else greater that is to come. As a leader, we continually need to be adaptable and resilient in every situation or experience that comes our way. I am passionate about being a powerful feminine leader who gives to noble causes I care about and who makes a humble positive impact and shows others how to lead up with impact.

T

is written within our DNA to nurture and uphold our environments so that everything is in equilibrium. But in order for everything to be in equilibrium, you must first create balance. That’s created when you decide to take what’s not important and break free from it. Thus, learn the art of “Let it go.” The less baggage there is to carry, the more you create balance. Create Boundaries — If you’re a woman who says yes to everything and everyone, and view yourself as the last one on the list to create balance, you have not created any boundaries. Learn to say no to requests from family, friends and co-workers.
There were around 23.5 million employed women with children under 18 and nearly two-thirds worked full-time, year-round, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s “2018 American Community Survey (ACS),” published last May. With these statistics, a hidden condition we call “stress” sets in, ushering in a negative impact on a woman’s overall health. Wake up early, get the kids ready for school, drop them off at school, rush to a fulltime job and, depending on the work environment, your day may be good or stressful. You can financial stress to the equation, as women most often have lower salaries than men. The next day you hit repeat, and it’s back on the rollercoaster ride we call responsibility and life. According to the American Psychological Association (APA): › Women are more likely than men (28% vs. 20%) to report having a great deal of stress (8, 9 or 10 on a 10-point scale).

› Almost half of all women (49%) surveyed said their stress has increased over the past five years, compared to four in 10 (39%) men. › Women are more likely to report that money (79% vs. 73% of men) and the economy (68% vs. 61% of men) are sources of stress, while men are far more likely to cite that work is a source of stress (76% vs. 65% of women). › Women are more likely to report physical and emotional symptoms of stress than men, such as having had a headache (41% vs. 30%), having felt as though they could cry (44% vs. 15%), or having had an upset stomach or indigestion (32% vs. 21%) in the past month.
What are the remedies to Stress?
Create Balance — As women, we most often spread ourselves thin. We take on so much responsibility. It
Journal — Your journal is a tool that provides a roadmap, a vision of your day to day life scenarios. It will put things into perspective for you to make changes, to create balance, to create boundaries, as well as help you understand your feelings and thoughts in your day to day activities with others and, most importantly, within yourself. FITT — Incorporating a health and lifestyle change is critical to reducing stress and maintaining optimal energy levels throughout your day. By integrating the FITT principle, you create a roadmap: › Frequency — How often are you going to schedule time to go to the gym and work out? How often will you schedule with your personal trainer, yoga instructor? Example: 2-3 times per week › Intensity — Your personal trainer will assist you in developing a sound workout program according to your exercise level. (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) › Type — What type of fitness and/ or physical activity are you ready to incorporate? usually created by an instructor and/or personal trainer. Physical activities include walking, gardening, shoveling snow, etc. › Time — How long will you engage in fitness and physical activity? Rule of thumb: 30 minutes is a great starting point. SPAAAH — Taking time away to visit a spa is another great way to release stress. A back massage, facial, manicure, pedicure, body wrap—aaaah. It’s an opportunity to close your eyes, download the clutter in your mind, and release negative emotions and thoughts. It’s also an opportunity to have someone else take care of you. Hormonal Testing — Aside from aging, stress creates havoc on the female hormonal system. While PMS, perimenopause and menopause are natural parts of aging, they’re processes we experience during certain intervals of life. Stress can accelerate hormonal imbalance and activate underlying health issues, which include, but are not limited to heart disease, diabetes, hypothyroid, hyperthyroid and eating disorders. Last, but not least, hold yourself in high regard. Understand that it is not selfishness to put yourself first.

Leverage Your Systems for Sustainability H
ere today, gone tomorrow is an unfortunate and all too familiar story for many organizations. There’s one thing that many of them have in common—they’re challenged with systems failure or, simply put, they have no systems in place at all. When a business allows its systems to operate efficiently, it will help sustain a venture for years to come.
24 Lead Up for Women
By Shequana Hughes
What Are Systems? Before we dive in, let’s talk about what systems are. Have you ever tried to make your mom’s favorite dish, but it never really tasted the same? Perhaps you were missing an ingredient that was overlooked or one you weren’t even aware you needed. Wouldn’t it have been easier if you had the actual recipe to reference each time to ensure accuracy and a better outcome? As a point of reference, the women in my family get together during the holidays and prep the meals before they cook them. We chop vegetables, measure the ingredients and make the broth. When it’s time to cook, it’s a breeze. Okay, that’s enough about food. Anyone else hungry? With forethought, that’s an appropriate analogy because your business should operate like you have a business recipe. As a business owner, you should prepare that recipe well in advance in order to provide your clients the best possible service. You, your clients and your staff deserve to have these types of systems on deck to help manage day to day operations. This ensures you get it right each and every time. All of your clients will enjoy the same user-experience, meaning there are no mishaps, missteps or mass confusion. Systems are about having Project Management, Business Management and robust Communication tools in place. These three systems are guaranteed to leverage your efforts, marketing and client-experience. More than that, they are part of a memorable winning recipe for your business. The Project Management tool enables you to plan out the unique roadmap of your business while seamlessly affording you the freedom to focus on one thing at a time. This system showcases your highly

effective goals, efficiently storing your projects for easier access. The Business Management tool is pivotal because you’re able to collect tangible and real-time data centered around your clients’ habits. Most of the business systems commission you to track your income and expenses so that you can also stay on top of your finances. Subsequently, this system lets you know what is not working, focus efforts and adjust where needed.
Systems is about having a Project Management and Business Management, as well as a robust Communication tool in place. These three systems are guaranteed to leverage your efforts, marketing and client-experience.
Why Are Systems Important? Systems ensure your business is streamlined so that prospective clients will receive the same experience each time they employ your services. It simply saves you valuable time because you don’t want to reinvent the wheel. Additionally, having systems in place renders the opportunity to think ahead of the game. Quite frankly, mistakes are made when you aren’t able to focus and execute. By implementing these systems into your business model or structure, you can focus on what’s next and grow into a forward-thinking company versus being reactive.
How Does This Make You Sustainable? Streamlining your business empowers concentration, transformational freedom and sustainability. Implementing systems to avoid business overload will require complex and intensive shifting, but it’s essential to the longevity of your organization. Project Management, Business Management and streamlined Communication systems are the most reliable tools for any thriving business. A systems-oriented company is the approach that’s both achievable and forward-thinking.

A Shot at Serenity
I
received “the” shot in early 2021. I have never in my life been so excited about an inoculation until now. When my children were young, shots equated to sleepless nights and fever spikes. I distinctly remember trying to get the days-old dirty band-aids off their teeny-tiny arms in a sudsy tub. Sometimes I tried the slow and steady method; other times it was a quick rip accompanied by excessive howling that scared our dog into hiding. This COVID-19 shot was different. It essentially meant a taste of freedom to me. Perhaps I could physically get closer to my aging parents instead of standing more than 10 feet away on their driveway. Maybe I would truly enjoy an outdoor game of pandemic pickleball without kicking my already germaphobic persona into overdrive. Inside I was thinking this shot would give me a reprieve from the chaos, a glimmer of hope that normalcy was within reach. After more than a year of being on lockdown, would this shot give me a boost of courage that would make my introverted self a bit more extroverted? Until now, I had not told my friends or colleagues that I was fortunate enough to receive the shot. Why? Mainly guilt. Here I was lucky enough to win the lottery of all lotteries by

receiving an inoculation while others continue to wait. Those people who post on Facebook about their good fortune of getting the vaccine—well, that’s just not my style. I’m more the type who is ridden with Jewish guilt over getting my chance at protection. I liken it to being on the Titanic—I was able to hop into a lifeboat while others were left behind to eventually sink to their demise. Yes, I’m melodramatic, but I told you already: I’m Jewish; we find drama in everything. Living during this pandemic has become dramatic at every turn. A simple cough twists my thoughts into a dark place. I become paranoid if I can’t smell the wafting aroma of my husband’s gourmet cooking. An ache here, a pain there, and my mind goes straight to hospital beds and ventilators. My family and

friends roll their eyes at me, but that’s who I am—and I just can’t help it. By the time this article appears, I’m hopeful that anyone who wants it will have had the opportunity to receive their dose of this door-opening vaccine, which—like its inoculation predecessors—is basically a shot of pure tranquility.
B.C. (Before COVID) Humans have benefitted from vaccines for centuries. Evidence actually exists that the Chinese had a smallpox inoculation as early as 1000 CE, but we’re most familiar with what we deem as the first vaccine— Edward Jenner’s 1796 use of cowpox material to prevent smallpox. While his method evolved during the next 200 years based upon medical and technological changes, it eventually resulted in the elimination of smallpox. Louis Pasteur’s 1885 rabies vaccine came next; later there were antitoxins and vaccines against diphtheria, tetanus, anthrax, cholera, plague, typhoid, tuberculosis and more developed through the 1930s. Vaccine research and development grew in the middle of the 20th Century with a vaccine

for polio. Research and then vaccines were created to reduce common childhood diseases like measles, mumps and rubella. Healing our world: Founded in 2017, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation (CEPI) works to accelerate the development of vaccines against emerging diseases. It is a global partnership among public, private, philanthropic, and civil society organizations working to enable equitable access to these vaccines for affected populations during outbreaks.
By the time this article appears, I’m hopeful that anyone who wants it will have had the opportunity to receive their double dose of this door-opening vaccine, which—like its inoculation predecessors—is basically a shot of pure tranquility. A Boost of Relief The US has very low rates of vaccine-preventable diseases, but this isn’t the case everywhere in the world. The more people who are vaccinated, the fewer opportunities a disease has to spread. That’s why, to me, getting my shot was definitely a life-changing gift. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccinations throughout your life are created to protect against many infections. When you skip vaccines, you leave yourself vulnerable to countless illnesses and possibly even death. Immunizations protect us from serious diseases and prevent the spread of those diseases to others. Thanks to vaccines, we’ve experienced the near eradication of polio and smallpox and thwarted epidemics of infectious diseases such as measles, mumps and whooping cough. Hit me with your best shot: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and partners joined forces in 2000 to set up the Global Alliance for Vaccines and immunization, now called Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The aim was to encourage manufacturers to lower vaccine prices for the poorest countries in return for long-term, high-volume and predictable demand from those countries. Since its launch, child deaths have halved, and 13 million deaths have been prevented.

It’s mind boggling to think how revolutionized medicine has transformed our world. The rabies vaccine (1885), the discovery of aspirin for pain relief (1900), insulin for diabetes (1921), penicillin to kill infectious bacteria (1928), AZT for preventing HIV/AIDS (1987), oral typhoid vaccine (1989) and the hepatitis A vaccine (1995). The list goes on and on. For goodness sake: The Health Action Alliance helps the business community improve the health of employees, customers and communities by restoring trust in science and strengthening public health in order to be better prepared in the future. The alliance promotes COVID-19 prevention and encourages vaccination, focusing on advancing health equity by addressing the needs of disproportionately affected communities.
Spoonful of Sugar Homeopathy, a pseudoscientific system of alternative medicine conceived in 1796, has also sweetened the painful repercussions of common ailments. The belief is that the body can cure itself by using tiny amounts of natural substances like plants and minerals, which homeopaths believe stimulate the healing process. Homeopathic medicine can treat various health issues like allergies and migraines, as well as minor issues like bruises and coughs. It is not recommended for life-threatening illnesses like asthma, cancer and heart disease. Homeopaths offer numerous COVID-19 remedies for affected organs—ranging from the lungs and brain to the liver and heart—based upon the various symptoms and virus stages in different people. Like a natural woman: The National Center for Homeopathy works to educate, promote and protect homeopathy. Its vision for the future: to create a world where homeopathy is an acceptable and widely chosen healthcare option that is accessible to all.
I’m A Believer No matter how you cut it, I believe inoculations are life-saving bursts of peace for both the recipients and the community. I’m beyond grateful to scientists and the medical world who gave me this glorious gift of time: The time to get physically closer to my parents, the time to enjoy a sport like pickleball that I never played prior to the pandemic, and the time to truly appreciate everything in my life that I thought I had before but, in reality, I didn’t appreciate nearly enough. If you have received the COVID-19 vaccine, do you have a sense of serenity or are you uncomfortable with the current climate? I’d love for you to share your thoughts and your experience.

Free to Fly is a group of women who have previously experienced abuse to some degree in their relationships and chose to choose herself first, thus giving herself permission to be free to fly! Free to Fly is Not a Non-Profit that takes in the abused. We are simply the guiding angels that provide the support, bridge to resources and education, and most importantly the hotlines that they may need to be free once again. Contact us: (602) 341-5840 Let Her Speak’s mission is to elevate women’s voices, facilitate deeper conversations, inspire change in our communities, and build a stronger support system for marginalized women who aspire to lead. We carry out this mission through women-empowered events, female-focused research, and leadership education. We believe that through community, research, and education – more women will rise to leadership positions. Website: letherspeakus.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/letherspeakus/ NOT YOUR AVERAGE BRACELET BRAND. We didn’t just want to be another cute bracelet brand. Screw that. The facts are clear – all of these causes are in desperate need of additional financial support and awareness and we knew we needed to do our part. Every bracelet donates $5 to the cause it supports. We worked tirelessly to find nonprofit organizations that are actively making positive strides towards change and really need our help to continue to do so.
