LETTER FROM OUR CHAIR
Continuing and Building our Strong PWH® Legacy Ever since the first Professional Women in Healthcare® (PWH®) meeting I attended, the wealth of knowledge and mentorship available started shaping and impacting my career, and I intend to further that legacy for others. Serving as the PWH® Chair is a privilege and an honor that I am both humbled and grateful to fulfill. Supporting our industry with other notable leaders is a source of inspiration and daily dedication for me and the leadership team. Our aim is to continue to enrich the personal and professional lives of our members, just like each of us has been enriched. I begin my term as chair with a tremendous advantage afforded by our immediate Past Chair Julee Prefer. The membership and I owe her a heartfelt thank you, and we laud her passionate leadership and integrity. Her dedication to developing our members, partners, board, committee members and stakeholders is an example I will strive to emulate. The industry recognition we have gained will pay dividends, and nurturing our leadership development focus will further raise our profile as the trusted industry resource for professional leadership development. Our primary offering in this area is the PWH® Leadership Summit, a beacon of achievement for Julee and our organization. We will build on this legacy. My vision for PWH® is to bring inspiration and leadership development to every professional woman looking for upward mobility in the healthcare market. As a strong believer of integrated leadership, I will strive to engage men and women in full partnership in the workplace to achieve a high return on equity and performance for their respective companies, targeting our Corporate Partners, while providing continuous professional education for our membership. To this end, it is critical that we remain relevant, approachable and responsive to our members’ leadership aspirations. Consequently, I will drive heightened outreach programs to better understand how we can continue to meet your expectations. Several companies have developed their own specialized employee programs for women. PWH® embraces this where ever it happens and will add value where we can. As the premier leadership development organization in this industry, we stand with companies committed to furthering equitable and integrated leadership. PWH® is a resource to companies that need to feel more connected to the industry.
In closing, we must all remember that leadership is a commitment, especially in healthcare where we experience rapid change constantly. Our industry is in dire need of diverse, strong and empathetic leaders who are not afraid to make decisions and can inspire. Our customers and patients need leaders to help them navigate today’s marketplace. We invite you to network with us and exchange ideas with aspiring minds who offer fresh perspectives on how to tackle industry challenges. If you are not a member of PWH®, join us! If you are a member of PWH®, get involved with a committee. It will take your career to a new height. Work in a cross-functional environment, learn a new skill, build upon your organizational skills and volunteer for a speaking engagement. Let us help you with your next step! We look forward to engaging with you in 2019 and beyond. Let’s INSPIRE each other along the way! Cheers, Rachelle Ferrara PWH Chair 2019-2020

HIDA LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Manage the Downstream Effects of PIs: An Update on Serialization, Plus Advocacy Wins By Linda Rouse O’Neill, Vice President, HIDA Late last year, prescription drug manufacturers and repackagers were required to serialize their products to comply with the Drug Supply Chain Security Act’s (DSCSA) system for tracking and tracing these items. In human-readable and 2D barcode form, product identifiers (PIs) must now be affixed or imprinted onto each package (smallest saleable unit) and homogenous case of a product intended to be introduced via transaction into commerce.
While manufacturers are responsible for PI maintenance and keeping a serial data record for six years, it is important for distributors to understand the downstream effects this will carry. If your organization handles prescription drugs covered by the DSCSA, then you should know that by November 27, 2019, all distributors must be able to transact using only serialized product. Distributors must have processes in place to receive, affix, and transact PIs, as well as verify saleable returns. That’s a lot to get done in a few short months, so see what you can do to stay ahead of the deadline. If your company uses a repackaging service, make sure they are aware of the 2018 requirements currently in effect. Furthermore, stay in contact with all of your trading partners to
4

ensure your low-unit-of-measure programs remain compliant since manufacturers will be setting the lowest unit of sale.
Industry Advocacy Wins Outlined in HIDA 2019 Advocacy Report HIDA Members achieved 2018 advocacy gains, listed below, positioning optimism for early 2019. In the just released 2019 Advocacy Report, HIDA outlines the remarkable year we’ve experienced as an industry. Here are some key highlights from the report: • T he United States Trade Representative removed 120 products from its three lists of Chinese goods that could have been subject to additional tariffs. • Congress and the White House enacted a measure that would delay the medical device tax for two years. HIDA and its members continue to advocate for permanent repeal of the tax. • HIDA received a contract from the Department of Homeland Security to develop an online mapping tool. This resource will assist federal partners that lead the nation’s emergency response and planning in engaging the commercial healthcare supply chain during emergencies.
Get Involved in Industry Advocacy Frequently within this column, I invite you to remain actively involved in HIDA’s advocacy efforts. This participation makes our outreach on Capitol Hill that much more effective and meaningful. For example, the House of Representatives recently passed its version of the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Reauthorization Act (PAHPRA), and we are currently awaiting the Senate to pass its version. The legislation includes all of HIDA’s advocacy priorities as a result of member involvement, but additional input could be required if further delays result. If you’re unsure how to get started or involved, please email me at Rouse@HIDA.org or our team at HIDAGovAffairs@HIDA.org
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Get Connected To the Industry Through PWH® How long have you been a member of PWH®? I have been a member of PWH® for about eight years, and soon after joined the Regional Connections Committee as a volunteer to help put together regional events in Jacksonville. I eventually became a Board Member as the Vice Chair of Regional Events, and today I’m the Vice Chair, Committee Liaison.
Why did you choose to join PWH®? I joined PWH® after one of the founding members, Pam Wedow, who I had worked with in the industry prior, educated me on the organization, its purpose and vision. At the time, I was still very new within the industry and didn’t know many people outside of my own company or the three vendors I worked with, so PWH® helped me to “spread my wings” further to meet other men and women at different companies. I have luckily had lots of support from each leader that I have reported to during my membership. PWH® has also helped me to navigate my way through different situations that a person experiences in the corporate medical world.
What is your current PWH® role and what would you like to bring to the organization this year? My current role is Vice Chair, Committee Liaison, on the Strategic Oversight Committee. My responsibilities include maintaining our project management tool to keep track of each committee’s annual strategic priorities and tasks, and act as a liaison between each committee. This year, I am on the Hospitality Committee for our 2nd Annual PWH® Leadership Summit, and I hope that we will make it much larger and more successful than last year’s

Summit. If you didn’t attend last year’s Leadership Summit, register for this year! We had so many positive compliments on last year’s event!
What is your current title and responsibilities at your organization? I’m the Generics Rx Associate Category Manager for McKesson Medical-Surgical, and my responsibilities consist of developing and promoting strategies and tactics for my assigned product categories based on the needs of our customers, as well as partnering with preferred vendors on our product portfolio and new generic launches.
What is your favorite moment about your career so far? My favorite moment in my career was when I was invited to my company’s Leadership Meeting in 2018, where I was surprised with being the recipient of our Most Valuable Partner Award for my collaborative efforts working with category managers and manufacturers on completion of their investment buys. This was a job that previously didn’t exist full-time, and I ended up building the role from the ground up, listening to the needs of the category managers and providing reporting and analysis for them, as well as management. I had no idea I was even (Continued on page 11) in consideration for an award, so it was a pleasant surprise!

OUTSTANDING MEMBERS
PWH® CHAIR AWARDS Past Chair Julee Prefer Recognizes Natalie Martin, Suzanne Lord and Enid Oquendo for Outstanding Contributions At the end of each year, the PWH® Chair thanks certain members for their outstanding contribution to our organization. Outgoing Chair Julee Prefer presented Natalie Martin of NDC, Suzanne Lord of Coalition for Independent Care and Enid Oquendo of Concordance Healthcare Solutions with awards in appreciation of their commitment to PWH® at the board meeting held in Dallas this January.
l to r: Natalie Martin of NDC, Suzanne Lord of Coalition for Independent Care and Enid Oquendo of Concordance Healthcare Solutions
Natalie Martin Natalie Martin, PWH® Marketing Chair, was the creative mind behind refreshing the PWH® brand and look. She embraces collaboration and has come along side all of our committees to capture what is going on at PWH® and then packaged it beautifully. She has created numerous PWH® marketing pieces, updated our brand guidelines and is in the process of assembling a team of experts in their discipline to lead our future marketing needs. Natalie also created the brand for the leadership summit, a brand and look that would establish the PWH® Leadership Summit’s first impression to the industry and our members. She has created numerous key communications, printed and electronic, including the 12-page registration brochure, the 20page program and a myriad of support pieces. These pieces cast PWH®, and our

leadership summit, in a beautiful and highly professional light, the impact of which we will benefit from for years to come.
Enid Oquendo Enid Oquendo, PWH® Vice Chair Summit Programming, is one of the most committed, energizing, tenacious individuals you will ever meet. It is difficult to find her without a smile on her face, and her can-do attitude knows no boundaries. If there is a task to be accomplished, whether glamourous or daunting, she is often first in line to tackle it. Programming was the center post of the entire summit. Although multiple people stepped up, Enid took on all the details of the speaker logistics, writing our play-by-play, managing the on-sight AV, coordinating sound check and walk throughs and the list goes on. The fact that she was able to speak Spanish to the all Hispanic set-up crew assigned to us was
spring 2019 • Issue 1 • www.mypwh.org
the icing on the cake. The work load for these details exceeds what one person could do, so, without being asked to do so, she simply assembled her own team on the side to get it done. In addition to heavy Summit involvement, she was also active in supporting multiple Professional Development Committee initiatives, creating content, blogging and more.
Suzanne Lord Suzanne Lord was recognized for her leadership, dedication, and contribution as Chair of the PWH® Strategic Oversight Committee for the past eight years. Suzanne has provided the wise and unwavering support, boundaries and strategic oversight that PWH® desperately needed as we navigated critical chapters of growth and development as an organization. On January 1st she moved into an advisory role with PWH®.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Dez Says: “Be Visible and Speak Up!” Longtime members of PWH® know Janis Dezso as Dez, and we recommend doing what Dez says. Look how it’s worked for her, now a Vice President at Symmetry Surgical. How long have you been a member of PWH®? I am one of the founding members of the organization. This organization is one of the most meaningful things I have done in my career. I have enjoyed being part of an organization that has brought significant change to the industry.
Why did you choose to join PWH®? About 15 years ago, there was only a small group of women who attended the HIDA Executive Conference. Of that handful, several of us noticed that the women who were there spent a lot of their time between meetings in their rooms working rather than networking. So, we got together because we felt there was a real need in the industry for women to be in senior leadership positions but to get there, we needed women to be visible. I am excited that today so many more women are in leadership roles, attend the executive conferences and other top leadership conferences in the industry, and they are certainly more visible today.
What is your current PWH® role and what would you like to bring to the organization this year? I originally served on the Membership Committee, later joined the Marketing Committee, then chaired the Marketing Committee, became Chair Elect and then Chair and, finally, as Past Chair I served as an advisor to the board for six years.
What is your current title and role at your organization? Today, I am Vice President of Global Distribution for Symmetry Surgical. Symmetry Surgical recently acquired Bovie Medical Corporation, and I was part of the team that came over to Symmetry to lead the distribution efforts.
Member Spotlight: Janis Dezso Vice President, Global Distribution, Symmetry Surgical
What is your favorite moment about your career so far? By far my favorite moments of my career have been when people that I have mentored succeed. It is truly rewarding to watch someone grow in their career and become a leader in our industry.
What was your dream job as a child? I wanted to be a physical therapist – interesting that I ended up in healthcare just in a different role than I had envisioned. Back then I never thought I could have achieved what I have, and I am grateful to the mentors that I have had that helped me along the way.
What advice do you have for someone just starting in the Healthcare Industry and new to PWH®? Don’t be afraid to take your seat at the table and to speak up – be visible. Leaders are looking forward, so be sure that you let your leaders know what you have accomplished and where you want to go. They are not mind readers, so speak up.

WELLNESS
The Benefits of Eating Seasonal Produce Yes, even when you travel! By Rachel Bailey
Do you find you eat healthier in the summer or in the winter? A study on seasonal diet quality among midlife women suggests that while women eat a lower quality diet during the winter holiday season, they seem to get back on track throughout the remaining winter months.1 This is good news. However, the study does indicate that its sample still ate less fruit during winter months, like tomatoes, corn, berries, peaches, nectarines and melons. The sample also ate less lettuce or mixed salad greens during winter months compared to summer. This is unfortunate because according to another study, winter is the best season for some fruits and veggies in terms of their consumable vitamin C content. This is especially true for spinach and oranges and to some degree lettuce, broccoli and bananas.2 What does this mean? It means members of Professional Women in Healthcare® (PWH®) need to step up the game on fruit and salad greens intake throughout winter to support strong immune systems. This will help ensure PWH® members are in the room during decisive beginning-of-the-year meetings at their own organizations and with customers.

While the study cited above concerning fruit and vegetable intake per season evaluated only women, it won’t hurt to share this content with male colleagues who need to consider their fruit and vegetable intake too. Why is it better to eat fruits and vegetables in their season? In addition to environmental factors, eating fruits and vegetables during their season, for the most part, means eating locally grown produce. Eating locally improves the chance of consuming the nutrients in fruits and vegetables before those nutrients dissipate during long travel routes. For example, summer apples grown in the Southern hemisphere may have just as much consumable vitamin C content as apples grown in the Northern hemisphere during its summer. But, preserving the nutritional content of apples grown in another hemisphere as they travel the long distance to market likely requires chemical intervention. With or without intervention, the longer the distance from farm to table means the greater the chance of nutrient loss. The take away: Err on the side of local and seasonal produce when possible. But, either way, eating more fruits and veggies can help support

regularity and fight off winter colds, especially during heavy travel schedules in the first quarter of the year. What else can you do diet-wise to support your system? In addition to the fruits and veggies mentioned above, remember that winter vegetables like pumpkin, sweet potato, red peppers and beets also provide great sources of vitamin A and carotene. Eat more of those too and drink more liquids. While thirst may go less noticed in winter compared to the warmer months, it’s still important to monitor hydration levels. Rather than forcing down cold water, sip plenty of hot, decaffeinated or herbal tea. Finally, to make up for lower levels of vitamin D due to less exposure to sunlight, take in some omega-3 fish or vitamin D-fortified milk and yogurt. These can also help support a stronger immune system.3

If your role doesn’t allow you to travel to those events, then ask the PWH® Regional Connections Committee Chair
how you can host a regional event in your area. Networking and creating those relationships can come in handy down the road. Sign up for a mentor! Not only an internal mentor to help you out with the inner dynamics of your company, but also an external mentor who can help you network with others in the industry, challenge you on different perspectives and give you advice on advancing your career. If you are new to PWH®, JOIN A COMMITTEE! I cannot stress that enough! What you put into PWH® is what you will get out of it, and the best way is to get involved. I have met so many wonderful women (and men) in the industry, from executive level to entry level, those on the Board currently, or from regional events, and every one of them has inspired me in one way or another.

PWH® REGIONAL EVENT: SOCAL REGION
Breaking the Ice with Chocolate and ‘The Amazon Effect’ By Sara Soriano, Buyer/Planner, B. Braun Medical Inc. PWH® SoCal hosted its first PWH® Regional Event on January 14th, 2019 at JT Schmid’s at The District in Tustin, CA. The planning started six months prior on a sunny day in Orange County with a great idea of getting together with other colleagues within our industry. We were hoping for a fun networking event including dinner, drinks, a speaker, raffle prizes, amongst other activities for eight to ten guests. Finally, the day came for our big event for the local group. The final registration list came, and we had 29 guests registered! What an unexpected outcome! As the night approached, our guests began to show, one by one, feeling the excitement for the event. With each and every guest registering, a chocolate was handed to them with a warning to not eat the tasty delight and save it for our networking game. Name tags were handed out, and guests were given a PWH® pen. Networking began shortly after with the aim to get everyone to break outside of their comfort zones. An announcement was made: “Go network with the people that have same chocolate as you.” Immediately people joined their fellow chocolate pals. A lot of stories and laughter were shared, and we could feel the atmosphere develop into a great experience. After the chocolate networking, the guests were instructed to find a seat at the tables. There, they were greeted with witty questions to encourage
some ice breaking. For example: “If you were a city, what city would you be and why?” You could hear the mood lighten up, as laughter resonated around the room and people continued to share their interesting responses. An exquisite dinner followed and our guest speaker, Lisa Anderson, gave an impactful presentation on how companies can achieve “The Amazon Effect.” She explained how Amazon has achieved exceptional service, rapid delivery and the latest technological advancements (drones). Lisa Anderson is the founder and president of LMA Consulting Group Inc., a consulting firm that specializes in operational strategy and end-to-end supply chain transformation. Lisa has been named one of the Top 46 most influential in Supply Chain by SAP, a Top 40 B2B Tech Influencer by Arketi Group and a Top 50 ERP Influencer by Washington-Frank. Lisa is regularly interviewed and quoted by publications such as Industry Week, TED magazine and the Wall Street Journal. After Lisa’s presentation, we had some raffle prizes for the audience including three copies of the book I’ve Been Thinking by Lisa Anderson, a Starbucks card and an Amazon Card. The event was fun and a great experience!
