LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
Stop Spinning. Use Time Intentionally. Spring is upon us and I feel as though I just ushered in the new year! It seems as though the wheel we are running on only spins faster and faster. That “it will slow down a bit after…” seems at times to be not much more than an illusion. With so many plates spinning at one time and so much talk of activity vs. productivity, one barely has time to ponder our own status. How are we keeping up? Thomas Edison said “Time is really the only capital that any human being has, and the only thing he cannot afford to lose.” Another anonymous quote states: “Ordinary people think merely of spending time. Great people think of using it.” We all complain about a lack of time, but the real issue is lack of time management and lack of direction.” Below are some of the best time management tips I have come across: 1. Plan your day, and include your personal time. Block time on your calendar for a workout, time with children or others special to you, special events, etc. If your schedule does not include time for the things that are important to you, your schedule will get filled with random activity that may not be worth your time. 2. Be realistic about the amount of time allotted for each activity and how much you put on your schedule. Allotting the right amount of time for an activity goes both ways. Do not schedule an hour if it only needs half an hour and vice versa. If you overbook your schedule, you may find yourself always behind. Allow a cushion and small windows of downtime to catch your breath and catch up.
I encourage all of you to be intentional about where you invest your time, with whom you invest it, and on what you invest it. You cannot get time back so chart your course, or you will simply spin around and around, never going anywhere, or at least not where you wanted to go. Creating Marketing Strategies at NDC and PWH Spotlighting Natalie Martin - Director, Creative Services, NDC, Inc Natalie Martin learned early in her career, from former supervisor Jackie Jones, the important role PWH can play in forming contacts and learning about the industry. Nine years later, Martin is the Vice Chair of Marketing and Branding for PWH, which allows her to utilize her marketing and leadership knowledge to unify of all the committees’ marketing goals. An artist at heart, Martin shares the unique talents she brings to the organization and encourages others to create their futures.
How long have you been a member of PWH? I joined PWH a little over nine years ago, and it was at the beginning of my career in the healthcare industry. It provided an excellent opportunity to create a network of contacts, as well as learn more about my new field. PWH provided vital resources for a recent graduate with limited connections.
Why did you choose to join PWH? My supervisor at the time, Jackie Jones, was a PWH committee member and encouraged me to join early on. She wanted me to experience the unique networking and professional growth opportunities that she felt had enhanced her own career. Of course, my firsthand experience confirmed that advice and I immediately began building the relationships that I treasure today.
What is your current PWH role and what would you like to bring to the organization this year? I am currently serving as the Vice Chair of Marketing and Branding, which is precisely in line with my professional passions. My goal is to utilize the full range of my experience to refine the processes already in place and to unite the marketing goals of all PWH committees under a more unified plan. It’s exciting for me to think about working with my fellow members to create and execute new strategies with comprehensive objectives.
What is your current title and role/responsibilities at your organization (job)?

What was your dream job as a child? Aside from toying with the idea of becoming a crime scene investigator, I have never wavered from my desire to become an artist. Since childhood, I have been attracted to the arts in all forms whether it be drawing, crafts or photography. In fact, I only felt at a vocational crossroads once during my education. Even then, the decision was which design discipline to pursue – graphic or interior. I leave my office at the end of each day knowing that I made the right decision!

Launching the 1st Annual PWH Leadership Summit: PWH Past Chair Heather Llorca-Kropp shares her vision – and why now is the time. By Heather Zehringer, PWH Professional Development Committee and Marketing Manager – Medical Equipment, Medical Division at Midmark Corp. A catalyst is defined as a “person or thing that precipitates an event.” Heather Llorca-Kropp can be described as the catalyst who ignited the spark for PWH’s first-ever Leadership Summit. Last year she approached the Board and advocated that the organization invest time and resources to execute this unprecedented event. Llorca-Kropp shares the origins of this event, her vision, and what this endevour will mean for all PWH members.
How did the idea for a Summit start and with whom? For years the PWH Board had been discussing our unique position in the industry when it comes to leadership training. The specific concept of a leadership-focused Summit had also been brewing for years, however, the organization needed to be in a position to support and execute such a large event. Believing it was the right time, last year I brought the concept to the Board and they agreed.
What is the goal of the Leadership Summit? The objective of the Leadership Summit is to provide two days of education and networking focused solely on leadership skills to members and non-members in the industry. We feel there is ample content in the industry when it comes to customer insight, government updates and education on selling. HIDA and Share Moving Media do a fantastic job of keeping us all informed and educated on industry topics. We felt we could add to that by focusing primarily on leadership during the course of the two days.
Why is now the time to execute the event? PWH is in a good position today to continue to give back to our members and the industry in meaningful ways. With the support of our corporate partners and sponsors, we are able to add this program to our already robust remote education, networking and mentoring offerings.

What do you hope attendees gain from the experience?
What do you strive to take away from the Summit?
I hope that aspiring leaders leave feeling energized and excited about the future of their career! When they get back to their desk, we want them to be able to apply new skills to their current job and have the new resolve to push themselves towards growth in our wonderful industry. I hope that executive managers leave inspired to help cultivate strong teams and expand the healthcare industry bench of talent. We believe the peer networking will be one of the most valuable aspects of the Summit and are aiming to have everyone leave with new contacts and friendships.
Personally I hope to leave the Summit as inspired as I leave our PWH board meetings and industry events. Our industry is a great one and I am so proud that PWH is going to be a part of inspiring growth and leadership for the future. It is mission critical that we collectively take responsibility for inspiring the next generation of leaders to innovate and be a contributing force in changing healthcare for the better.

Are Your Boundaries Healthy? Recognize the signs and take steps to fortify By Lisa A. Mead RN, MS, Certified High Performance Coach www.crownehc.com
Boundaries are essential to healthy relationships and, really, a healthy life. Setting and sustaining boundaries is a skill. Unfortunately, it’s a skill that many of us don’t learn or even think about during our daily lives. We might pick up pointers here and there from experience or through watching others. But for many of us, boundary-building is a relatively new concept and a challenging one. Personal boundaries are the imaginary lines we draw around ourselves to maintain balance and protect our bodies, minds, emotions, and time from the behavior or demands of others. They provide the framework to keep us from being used or manipulated by others, and they allow us to confidently express who we are and what we want in life. Personal boundaries allow us to be in the driver’s seat of our own lives.

Healthy boundaries are also important to have in our professional lives. Establishing professional boundaries allows you to be in the driver’s seat of your career. Without healthy boundaries you give up a part of yourself to be available or accommodating. Or you become so entangled with another person and their needs (co-dependent behavior) that you lose your own identity. You can see how easily this can happen at both work and home. At work,

without boundaries, you may find yourself taking care of everyone else’s to do list but your own, forcing you to work late, fall behind or burnout. Without boundaries you can easily feel like you are the dumping ground for your boss, colleagues and your staff. You need healthy boundaries so you can set expectations of what you can commit to doing and how much time you can dedicate to all the various people and activities that will gladly take up all your time and even more importantly your energy. There are many ways to develop healthy boundaries and you can use this time to review where you are with setting healthy boundaries and enforcing them.
Below are some indications of unestablished or unhealthy boundaries: • Saying yes when you mean no. • Feeling guilty when you say no. • Not speaking up when you have something to say. • Becoming overly involved in someone’s problems. • Allowing yourself to be interrupted or distracted to accommodate another person’s immediate wants or needs. • Allowing people to say things to you or in front of you that make you uncomfortable. 6 Steps to establishing healthy boundaries
1 - Know your limits
onsider what you can tolerate and C accept, and what makes you feel uncomfortable or stressed.
2 - Be direct E veryone has different limits. You need to be direct and clear about your boundaries when others’ behavior or requests make you uncomfortable.
E xamine your own behavior and words to see where you might be crossing another person’s boundaries. 3 - Reinforce I t may take some time to train yourself and others to be aware of and respect your new boundaries. Continue to reinforce them so that you are taken seriously and respected. Practice saying no when you are asked to do something you don’t want to do.
4 - Reciprocate E xamine your own behavior and words to see where you might be crossing another person’s boundaries. Work to change those behaviors so that you are reflecting the respect and support you want for yourself.
5 - Be patient If you have had weak personal
boundaries for years, be aware that this change doesn’t happen overnight.
6 - Practice self-care P utting yourself first also gives you the energy, peace of mind and positive outlook to be more present with others and be there for your professional and personal relationships. Taking the time to review, develop and reinforce healthy professional and personal boundaries will provide you with a framework to manage your energy and time. When you know where you stand and what your limits are, you improve your confidence and find yourself stronger to face life’s daily challenges.

As part of our continued focus on Leadership Development, PWH is excited to announce new learning opportunities through a customized program from Caliper University, designed specifically for our PWH members to grow and develop their leadership skills. This summer, we are offering our members three different online learning sessions to target the specific needs of each group’s opportunities for growth. As a member, you have the option to either enroll in a professional track, management track, or leadership track or complete as many pieces of the program as you desire to support your development path. Each session is an 8-week Online Certificate Course and includes a personal assessment, a one-on-one
consultation with the Caliper representative, custom insight report, course preparation, two fully interactive webinars and a booster session to reinforce lessons and explore how team members have applied the new skills. Participants will earn a certificate at the successful completion of the course and recognition amongst their PWH peers and the industry.

A Summer Weekend in Pittsburgh
Summer is bringing warmer weather and longer days. It is also bringing me to a city dubbed “Mighty. Beautiful.”: Pittsburgh. Here I will celebrate my summer birthday with friends by catching a Tom Petty concert and visiting the Andy Warhol Museum. To get more of the scoop on this hidden gem, I reached out to friend and industry colleague, Don Lovre, Director National Accounts, for BBraun. His suggestions did not disappoint! Here is a pre-planned itinerary to experience all the food and fun this iconic city has to offer.

Wednesday March 29th In Bonita Springs Florida, Professional women in Healthcare held its annual luncheon at HIDA Executive Conference at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point. The theme of this year’s PWH Leadership Lunch & Networking Event at HIDA Executive Conference Leadership Series was Leading with Humility. We had industry leaders on the lawn to hone in on their humility skills while unwinding and networking. It was a luncheon and networking followed by an afternoon of BOCCE Ball with four teams led by industry leaders, sponsored by Beckman Coulter. We had a great turn out with 45 pre registrations and an additional 14 at the door, both men and women in attendance. The 4 teams and their distribution leaders: Court 1 Team Schein - Bridget Ross, President, Global Medical Group Court 1 Team McKesson - Kelly Gibney, Vice President, Category Management, Medical Surgical Court 2 Team Beckman - Brenda Highley, Director of Distribution Partnerships Court 2 Team Owens - Tonnice Charles, Vice President Category Management There was a lot of competition on the courts, Team Owens won the final against Team Schein going into a tied final round. Every team was awarded Starbucks gift cards for their participation. However, the best award for the day was the team building and the valuable lesson learned of humility.

Big Picture Benefits John Sasen Scholarship winner shares the value of attending HIDA Exec By Carmen Hamlin, PWH Member, Sales Training Specialist for McKesson Medical Surgical I am so honored and grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the 2017 HIDA Executive Conference as the recipient of the John Sasen Memorial Scholarship. The 2017 HIDA Executive Conference was a perfect capstone to mark my five-year anniversary in the healthcare industry. As an instructional designer and content developer in the Sales Training department at McKesson Medical Surgical, I’m frequently creating and revising training involving both selling skills and product knowledge while juggling new technologies. There’s always an urgent project to complete or an updated platform to test, competing with my time to identify areas for training on the changing healthcare environment. So many of us stay busy with meetings and deadlines that we don’t always have the opportunity to step back and look at the big picture. The HIDA Executive Conference offers exactly that. Each day started with a general session that provided a broad overview, followed by breakout sessions where we could start the discussion of applying these principles in our work focus areas. The debate about healthcare between Tom Coburn and Howard Dean was obviously a highlight. It’s always been interesting to me to listen in on healthcare discussions from the point of view of the distributor and others in the healthcare industry, even as we are individually impacted by the outcomes, as well. I particularly appreciated the opportunity to speak with Howard Dean one on one for a few minutes afterwards, and that is just an example of the unique value of this conference.

Plenty of time was scheduled for formal and informal networking opportunities, and the breakout sessions were small enough to allow attendees to share specific experiences, exchanging challenges and solutions. in Leadership into action featuring a Bocce tournament with teams led by industry leaders. My team, led by Kelly Gibney, had a blast in the “non-winner bracket,” improving our skills, cheering on team members as well as opponents, and maybe mixing a bit of superstition into our strategy. My time with HIDA and PWH in Bonita Springs was both energizing and refreshing. In addition to an immersive experience in the big picture of healthcare and meeting a wide variety of leaders across the industry, I even had the opportunity to spend quality time with the supplier management team from my own company! The conference allowed me to develop a little more insight and understanding of the relationships within the distribution world, as well as to build relationships of my own.

Battling Burnout The first step is to recognize it

I was recently astounded to come across Burnout Research, an entire journal dedicated to the psychological response to chronic job stressors. According to MerriamWebster, burnout is a physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress. Burnout has already been recognized as prevalent in healthcare, but is now leeching into other fields including the entrepreneurial space. Burnout and its spread pose a major challenge for all of us. People experiencing it lose the capacity to meaningfully engage in their work or make an impact, and they suffer a wide range of health problems. According to a 2006 article in Monitor on Psychology, a journal published by the American Psychological Association (APA) and titled: “Burnout harms workers’ physical health through many pathways,” burnout may increase risk of cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, male infertility, sleep disorders, musculoskeletal disorders and more.
Negative paradox of burnout Burnout creates a cascade of bad effects. In addition to poor health and emotional distress, it leads to feelings of powerlessness. Research shows that the more someone suffers from burnout,
the less likely they are to find available resources to alleviate it. Instead they engage in self-undermining behaviors. They create more job demands as their creativity and capacity for mobilizing resources and for solving problems effectively dissolves. At the same time, they lose support. This creates a loss cycle. People in a loss cycle become less likely to receive support, to experience job autonomy, to participate in decisionmaking, and to have access to information. It’s a nasty vortex. The way out is to do what a client of mine did, by job crafting (he re-designed his job to foster more satisfaction). This is the opposite

of learned helplessness. In an attempt to get out of the vortex, my client explored project management software to make teams work more smoothly. The software he chose was hugely successful because it brought more team harmony and drastically cut down on email volume. Determining if you have burnout One of the tricky things about burnout is that it unfolds slowly overtime. So people may not realize they are experiencing it. Authentic leaders who are positive, self-aware, have integrity and transparency are shown to protect people from burnout. If you have a boss who does not have these traits, you may be extra vulnerable. Although tempting, adopting a detached attitude towards your work is a mal-adaptive and risky strategy. If you find yourself detaching or engaging in selfundermining behaviors, you may need to take a deeper look. If you find your psychological state eroding, don’t ignore these important warning signs. PWH Focuses on Outreach Professional Women in Healthcare is committed to outreach and looking for ways to continually give back. Over the years we have partnered with various charities. As we continue through 2017 and beyond, we will look for ways to tie local charities into our regional events, hoping that this will allow us to touch many individuals and many organizations. In support of this effort, we will also expand our scholarship award programs to include an outreach reward. Another way PWH reaches out is through our scholarship and award programs. The Jana Quinn Inspirational Award recognizes a woman in the industry for inspiring others toward the mission of PWH and more, both professionally and personally. (See page 4 for more detail.)
Our scholarship programs recognize women in the healthcare industry for their commitments to the mission of PWH. The John Sasen Scholarship awards one woman in the industry with registration and travel expense to the HIDA Executive Conference and one-year membership
to PWH. The Streamlining Healthcare Scholarship (SHC) rewards registration and travel expenses to the HIDA SHC. This year, PWH will add scholarship reward to the first annual PWH Leadership Summit, providing registration and travel expense to the Summit plus one-year membership to PWH. (See page 4 for detail.) Collaboration, Networking and Advocacy HIDA Executive Conference and Washington Summit By Linda Rouse O’Neill, Vice President, HIDA Last month, more than 400 supplier, GPO, provider, and technology solutions leaders met at HIDA’s Executive Conference to discuss ongoing healthcare changes and the opportunities they present for supply chain relationships. This event is always a must-attend for anyone seeking a diverse mix of education sessions, networking, and opportunities to share ideas with industry peers. Both our political debate between Gov. Howard Dean (D-VT) and Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), as well as our provider panel featuring executives from Carilion Clinic, Loretto Health, and Florida Blue, highlighted the need for leadership, transparency, and collaboration across healthcare. In a market characterized by increasingly consumerdriven patients and an insurance climate shifting to shared risk payment models, business partners value innovative ideas they can take back to their organizations and promote among constituents. One such idea-sharing forum offered annually at the conference is our roundtable series tailored to independent distributors, medical sales leaders, and vender relations professionals. While very distinct in the topics discussed, each session broadly asked how distributors and manufacturers can strengthen relationships, align expectations, and improve outcomes through better partnerships. It’s our hope that while you work internally on implementing best practice recommendations resulting from these meetings, HIDA can advocate on behalf of the industry to government and federal agency leaders wherever possible.

The PWH Leadership Lunch provided a great opportunity for industry leaders to learn and network in a casual conference setting while testing their bocce ball skills. agency discussions, particularly in the lead-up to our June Washington Summit. A group of HIDA and PWH colleagues visited the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in April to share information and explore opportunities for public and private collaboration during public health emergency responses. We will continue working with the SNS to collaborate on strategies and solutions for the healthcare supply chain to support public health responses. More recently, HIDA was invited to participate in a blue ribbon panel public meeting on biodefense budget reform. Many
of the outcomes from our SNS meetings and member lobbying visits on emergency/ pandemic preparedness were highlighted during this event, but more work is needed to educate key members of Congress as it gears up to reauthorize the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act (PAHPA). HIDA’s Washington Summit (held June 6-7, Washington, D.C.), provided a unique opportunity to present a united front on Capitol Hill alongside trading partners. During a time when leadership and collaboration are needed more than ever, voices from our industry can truly make a difference in helping to accomplish our strategic priorities.
