LETTER FROM THE CHAIR

Find Ways to Help Happy New Year! As I sat down to write my first “Chair Letter” of the new year, I can’t help but to reflect on this past year and how much we accomplished despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic. We added 200 new members, held our first virtual PWH® Leadership Summit, delivered 31 webinars/events, and created more than 90 mentoring matches. This would have been impossible to do without the support and dedication from each of the PWH® Committees and the many volunteers that make the PWH® organization function. As we move into 2022, it doesn’t seem like the pandemic is going away. There are new variants and many new cases. By now, all of us have been directly or indirectly impacted by the pandemic. One thing that I experienced during my own COVID lockdown was the outpouring of love and support. We had meals brought to us, offers to go to the store and many text and calls checking in on us. These small gestures brought joy during a challenging time and helped us make it through. They certainly made my experience a little better. I would like to challenge each of you to find ways to help those that may be struggling. Here are some ways that you can help others: 1. Go to the grocery store for a neighbor or colleague. 2. Make or send a meal for someone in quarantine. 3. Send a hand written note or card to an elder. 4. Call a friend that you haven’t talked to in a while. As vaccinations and testing are now more available, we are looking forward to getting back together in person in May at the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit in Colorado. We recently visited the site and held a planning session with the Summit Committee. The conference

center is beautiful, and we are planning a great program. Along with enhancing our leadership skills, we will celebrate reuniting our industry and all that we have overcome in the past couple of years. I look forward to seeing all of you in Westminster, Colorado in May! Sincerely,

Vicky Lyle

She schedules regular meetings, leads the planning efforts including agenda development, speaker selection, theme development, production and logistics. Why Join the PWH® Summit Committee: “I was invited to attend a regional networking event in Dallas a few years ago and my boss at the time (Jessica Wells) told me I absolutely had to be on the board and work with the most wonderful ladies she had been working with. The rest is history, you could say. I felt an energy and passion that night, and I knew I had to get more involved.” Past Summit Impact: “At the 2019 Summit I remember sitting at a table at the offsite dinner with various women I did not know. They did not treat me as a stranger or new attendee but rather brought me into their conversations and made me feel so welcome. It has led me to do the same in my professional engagements with anyone new I am sitting with or working with. It gave me confidence to be myself and to take advantage of opportunities to put yourself out there…you never know where it might lead to.”

When the opportunity to be part of the committee presented itself, I jumped at the chance to help and inspire current and future PWH members Past Summit Impact: “At the first PWH® Leadership Summit there was a speaker, Christine Cashen, who had an inspiring message about taking control and being a solution maker. I will never forget leaving with the feeling of inspiration and bringing it back to my day-to-day job.

Internally, I provide a deep understanding of the “voice of the customer” to help form solid partnerships and alliances with key stakeholders. Responsibilities as Vice Chair Hospitality: Erin helps Summit attendees get the most out of their experience. Why Join the PWH® Summit Committee: “When I attended my first Summit I was greatly impressed with the content and experience. The group of women/men in this organization are very inclusive and embrace opening doors for new people to step in and step up. relationships, mentoring opportunities and personal growth. This group is filled with amazing thought leaders who are always willing to extend their hand out to raise others up. This is what I observed and experienced at my first Summit.” Most Excited About: “As always, our team spends a great deal of time picking the specific speakers that have a message which resonates with our group. The Summit is really focused on providing key leadership insights that people can take back and implement within their own company/relationships. This year will be special because we will be in person, live after two years being together. Knowing the deep relationships within the organization, I know there will be a lot of hugging, celebrating and connection.”  Membership Liaison Jessica Wells Day Job: Jessica serves as Senior Director, Member Experience for Vizient. 6

Why Join the PWH® Summit Committee: “The PWH® Leadership Summit is such an extraordinary opportunity to connect with other members while diving into both strategic and practical learnings around growing professionally and personally. Given how much I’ve gained from being a participant in the past, along with my background in event strategy, I wanted to give back and be a part of the team that brings it to life. This is such an incredible opportunity to engage all PWH® members, and ties to each of our areas of focus on the Membership Committee (New Member Recruitment & Onboarding, Member Engagement, Networking Events). It seemed like such an exciting opportunity and fit!” Past Summit Impact: “At the 2018 Leadership Summit I will never forget getting a glimpse of the power of the unstoppable women of PWH®! From the very first moment of the New Member Reception, when I walked into the room of unknown faces, it began. I met so many Board Members, whose passion for growing women, championing and having a lot of fun along the way came to life. It simply shined brightly from the moment I met them and through the course of that first Leadership Summit. It was then that I realized I’d truly found my people… a network of women that I wanted to be a part of that would make a positive impact on one another and the industry!” Most Excited About: “Being together to connect in real and meaningful ways in person!!! Seeing mentors and mentees meet for the first time in a face-to-face setting.”

 Summit Committee Advisor Julee Prefer Day Job: Julee is President of Healthcare Solutions Group and an industry consultant. Responsibilities as Advisor: In 2016 and 2017, Julee served as Chair of PWH®. As Chair, she helped ensure the first PWH® Leadership Summit was a success, and her continued involvement helps the Summit maintain consistent excellence. Why Join the PWH® Summit Committee: “As an annual advisor, it has been exciting to see the committee evolve bringing new talent, ideas and visions forward. The committee is comprised of high energy, creative, professional leaders committed to raising the bar on leadership development each year. Being a part of this event and this committee is extremely rewarding.” Past Summit Impact: “I have been involved in the PWH® Leadership Summit since the concept for it was birthed and have been actively involved since. The PWH® Leadership Summit is the only industry wide event focused solely on leadership development. An event like this has been needed in our industry for a long time. The speakers are a great blend of dynamic leaders from both inside and outside of the industry. It is a truly energizing event with relevant content and impactful networking.” Most Excited About: “The powerful line-up of speakers, relevant content and being in-person.”

WELLNESS

There’s a Yoga for That! By Lora Pheffer, Vice President, Healthcare Division, Premier Parking

While you may not be surprised to hear that an estimated 36 million Americans practice yoga regularly, what may come as a surprise is its rapid rise in recent years. One study found that the number of yogis in the United States had increased by over 50 percent in four years, which also may explain the growing popularity in my favorite wardrobe style: Athleisure. Beyond the Lululemon leggings and Alo tanks, what brings people to yoga is the personalized journey. No two practices are the same, meaning you create the benefits you seek, depending on your focus of practice. Each body needs something different, so when it comes to time on your mat, give yourself whatever it is that you need in that moment. If your goal is increased cardiovascular capacity and strength, then Vinyasa might be your jam. If you want renewed focus, reduced stress, and enhanced balance and stability, Hatha might be a perfect route. If you run marathons or powerlift and can’t remember the last time you could touch your toes, Yin might be able to solve that. Or if you just want to hide from the spouse and kids for an hour of peace, Restorative yoga has you covered. And with the recent popularity in fusion classes that blend yoga with everything from CrossFit and bootcamps to barre and Pilates, the variety is only limited to what’s possible on a 6-foot mat. Use resources like the Mindbody app and ClassPass to read reviews of new classes and studios before making a financial commitment. Call ahead too since most studios offer the first class free, so long as you call to schedule the day before.

be sure to ask, especially since policies can change daily and may not be shown on the website.)

Lora Pfeffer is a Certified Yoga Instructor and advocate for health and well-being. Focused on Vinyasa (a “flow” style of yoga) she enjoys sharing her passion with clients and colleagues alike, challenging them to move, every day.

Questions to ask before attending a new class or studio: > Is the room heated? If it is, what temperature range should I be prepared for? > What do I need to bring (shoes, mat, towel, block, roller…)? > How early should I arrive? (Many studios want you there a little earlier than usual to sign a waiver, get a tour and set up with the assistance of the instructor or an employee.) > What are the studio’s current COVID protocols? (Many gyms have closed shower areas, water fountains and other amenities, so

If an at home practice is more conducive, Peloton now offers yoga; FableticsFit is free for those with the retailer’s VIP membership; Alo Moves is another option, and I personally owe my own sanity during the pandemic shut down to The Mirror. Another recent adaption in a post-COVID world is that many studios now offer virtual class options at a much lower cost than a traditional yoga studio membership. With more options than ever, the yoga studio can truly be anywhere you find yourself needing a little extra Zen. So, if you have tried yoga in the past and thought, “Yoga just isn’t for me.” I challenge you to try again, but maybe with a little more knowledge. I am absolutely certain there is a yoga class out there to fit your health and wellness goals, and maybe even give you a reason to add a few more options to the Athleisure section of your closet!

Attending the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit? Lora Pfeffer is leading a Morning Mindfulness: Yoga session on Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at 6:30 am. Start your day of networking and professional development with lots of positive energy and flexibility!

TECHNOLOGY

The PWH® Website Gets a Makeover By Eryn Marx, Director of Client Services, KBK Communications and PWH® Technology Committee Chair

For me, 2021 was an exciting year as I transitioned from the PWH® Mentoring Committee chair position to the newly created Technology Committee chair position. The new committee has been working for the last year or so on technology initiatives. A collective group of PWH® Board members had been putting in extra work to develop these initiatives because we knew how important technology has become for all organizations. The Board realized that our organization needed to make improvements. I want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all that have been involved along the way!

With transition, another word comes to mind…transformation. Digital transformation is something we hear all the time, but what does it actually mean? Depending on who you ask, there can be many different responses. I consider digital transformation to be the progress an organization makes to grow their business through digital efforts. A digital transformation strategy and its deliverables

8

depend upon the type of organization, where that organization is in terms of development, and the goals members of the organization want to achieve. For PWH®, we began our digital transformation last year with the creation of the Technology Committee and the creation of a strategy for where we wanted to go. With that, it was clear that we needed to make investments into the

technologies we were using and develop transition tools so we could better service our members and corporate partners. We also knew we needed to make updates to our website so we could better represent who PWH® members are and the core values of our organization. I am excited to share the new PWH® website. Launched in November, the site features enhancements to the overall look and feel as well as improved search engine optimization (SEO) and member login functionality. I invite you to explore our new website and keep an eye out for additional updates that will be coming in 2022 and beyond!

The newly made-over PWH® website features professional development tools for PWH® members, including a membership directory, free access to past and current webinars and a career center with job postings. The enhanced PWH® Leadership Summit page makes it easy to register, access venue information and view updates to the agenda.

LET’S CONNECT AND RETHINK

Let’s Connect and Rethink 5 Keys to Build Resilience and Results* By Colette Carlson

As 2022 kicks off, consider what you want to rethink or unlearn from the past couple of years in order to personally and professionally survive and thrive. I’ll go first. Being well versed in the science of change didn’t stop me from initially doubting the success of virtual events. After all, how could the energy, networking, information exchange and activities be as impactful? Yet, twenty months later, client feedback remains incredibly positive, and I’ve mastered new equipment, software and engagement activities. Yes, there were frustrating moments when a platform or viewer’s internet speed caused hiccups, yet re-thinking and pushing through my bias led to emotional and fiscal growth.

Think Again Author Adam Grant in his newly released book “Think Again” addresses several important issues that stirred my curiosity. I will paraphrase what I believe to be some of his more important take-away points and add my own observations:

Colette Carlson

10

1. It may be time for us to develop the skills of rethinking and unlearning. Things change and they are always changing. Are we resilient enough to be open to accepting new things and new ways of thinking? Why, for example, did it take a pandemic for leaders to recognize that physical presence does not equal productivity? Why are too many offices simply re-creating the office

Spring 2022 • PWH® Connect Journal • mypwh.org

on-line rather than building systems for asynchronous communication? 2. We need to value rethinking. Because we believe something to be true doesn’t mean it is true. It’s a little scary, I know, but wouldn’t it serve us well to be open to rethinking something through? This can be accomplished when we approach a subject with a scientific mindset. Continuously searching to uncover new truths by experimenting, learning and testing hypotheses. There is so much discord right now, what would it hurt to examine other points of view and challenge our blind spots and biases? 3. It’s time to admit we don’t know everything. I know a thing or two about human behavior and motivating people, yet I know nothing about Hunan cooking, plumbing, organic chemistry or 17th-century Italian painters. So, if I hear someone expressing an opinion based on their reality, who am I to say their reality is wrong? Why not invest in a curiosity conversation instead that sparks learning and connection?

Colette Carlson is the closing keynote speaker for the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit, to be held this year in Denver, CO, May 16-18, 2022. Learn more about Colette Carlson and register for the Summit at mypwh.org/leadership-summit.

The more we are willing to unthink, unlearn and accept that we don’t have all the answers, the more resilient we become. and accepting only our learning as the highest source of knowledge, what have we lost? Has this intractability cost us co-workers, dear friends, or relatives? Has stubbornness cost us opportunities or growth? Have we been stubbornly clinging to a viewpoint because we are afraid of the unknown?

Let’s Build Resilience Where will all this unthinking and

unlearning lead us? I believe it will make us more resilient. Rethinking, reflecting and ultimately renewing can only lead us to a more open and accepting place, not only of others, but of ourselves. The more we are willing to unthink, unlearn and accept that we don’t have all the answers, the more resilient we become. So, as we kick off the year, let’s remember to judge a lot less, love a lot more, and connect!

4. Let’s strive to be less critical of others, more willing to change ourselves. Whether in social media, cable news, talk radio, podcasts, e-magazines or even newspapers, if we look hard enough we can find others with our point of view. If we only stick to that group, we won’t change our thinking. Suppose “our” group is wrong? Would we be willing to change our opinions if we opened ourselves to other viewpoints? 5. What has our stubborn thinking cost us this year? This is a tough issue. By clinging to our thoughts about the world *This article is reprinted with permission from colettecarlson.com.

DEVOUR

Devour: Destination Denver! (+) Boulder We are looking forward to seeing everyone in May at the 2022 PWH® Leadership Summit. The venue for this year’s Summit is the Westin Westminster hotel in Westminster, CO, between Denver and Boulder. Our Denver local, Allison Therwhanger, provided recommendations for must-see adventuresome restaurants in Denver with one located in a cool historic hotel. My recommendations are centered in Boulder. I just love its eclectic vibe. Make sure to snap a photo with “the boulder” if you go!

Allison’s Picks The Brown Palace Hotel BrownPalace.com The Brown Palace Hotel is in Downtown Denver. This architectural beauty, hotel and Spa opened in 1892. Whether you stop in for afternoon tea service, Sunday champagne brunch, fine dining in the Palace Arms, or to listen to live music in the Ship Tavern vintage pub, a trip to the Brown Hotel will provide an unforgettable experience in the Mile-High City.

The Buckhorn Exchange Buckhorn.com The Buckhorn Exchange, established in 1893, is Denver’s oldest restaurant. The space brims with historic artifacts, legends and historic moments. Four presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan, have dined here. The walls of the restaurant feature a 500-peice collection of wild game. Also on display is a 125-piece gun collection. This historic jewel has been serving up steaks, buffalo, elk and the imaginary of the Old West since 1893. The Fort Thefort.com The Fort Restaurant is located in “Red Rocks” County (Southwest Denver). The building is a full-scale replica of a fur trading fort and is known for its extensive wine selection and for specializing in regional game, such as bison, elk and quail, as well as seasonal fish and hearty vegetarian fare influenced by American Indian and Mountain Man cuisine. The Fort’s creation of “New Foods of the Old West,” brings back popular recipes from the 19th century, prepared with a twist. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Fort is a full-scale adobe replica of Bent’s Fort, an important fur-trading fort originally in Southeastern Colorado (1833-1849). Listed as a “must-see stop for out-of-towners,” it also earned the title “Best Dinner Destination for Impressing Folks.” This sounds like a great place for those of you attending the PWH® Leadership Summit and wanting to entertain clients.

PWH® MENTORSHIP SPOTLIGHT

Realizing Professional Goals with the Right Partner, Tools and Framework This issue we spotlight mentee Shelby Kenney and her mentor Brooke Elliott. Read below to learn about their successful relationship and special insights about mentorship from Brooke who is also a certified and credentialed Executive Coach.

Mentee’s Perspective Shelby Kenney, Senior Product Manager, StimLabs LLC

What is your background? I attended the University of Georgia and obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing. I worked in various roles for one of the world’s leading manufacturers of medical products. I am currently in the marketing department at StimLabs LLC, a leader in regenerative technologies and products.

Brooke Elliott

14

Why were you seeking a mentor? What was your goal?

Why has the relationship been successful?

I initially signed up for the PWH® Mentorship Program to grow my professional network. After being matched with Brooke, I realized I wanted more from my career. I quickly realized I needed guidance on creating opportunities for myself.

I consider Brooke a lifelong friend and ally now. I believe our relationship has been successful because we were able to identify my professional goals early on. Brooke was, and continues to be, a reliable resource in my career development.

What is your take on the value of mentorship?

What have you learned from you mentor? Throughout our meetings, Brooke provided me with industry insights by way of sharing her experiences. Brooke helped me take an introspective look into my strengths and weaknesses as a professional. Through that exercise, I was able to realize what I contribute as an employee and colleague, and how to articulate that value to others.

Shelby Kenney

The PWH® Mentorship Program has been a blessing for me. Mentorship reignited the fire in my belly to confidently pursue a career I am passionate about.

Mentor’s Perspective Brooke Elliott, CMC, CEC, ACC Founder, BE Complete Coaching & Consulting LLC.

What is your background, current company affiliation and position? Originally from Maryland, I received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and French from McDaniel College and spent twenty years in the healthcare industry, primarily with Premier Inc., a healthcare transformation company. My experience includes sourcing and contract negotiations, team design and development, talent discovery and development, operations, change management, process improvement, and education and enablement. Over the course of my career, I have focused on helping others achieve their goals. I recently obtained Mentor Co and Executive Coach certificates and an International

Spring 2022 • PWH® Connect Journal • mypwh.org

Coaching Federation (ICF) Associate Certified Coach credential. In 2022, I catapulted my passion and desire for helping others by starting a coaching and consulting business. I currently serve on the PWH® Strategic Oversight Committee as Vice-Chair for Organizational Leadership Development.

What inspires you to mentor? There will always be aspects of our lives, both personal and professional, that mimic a bud waiting to bloom. Growth opportunities lie within each of us. I am driven to help others navigate this journey of growth and self-awareness. Leading with the heart and a focus on positive intelligence, I use a combination of mentoring, coaching, and consulting to create a space for the mentee to uncover, unravel, and embrace new ideas, solutions, and self-discovery that lead to greater joy, development, and flourishing. The goal is for individuals to positively work towards their life-long legacy and for teams to work towards fulfilling their mission and vision with values at the forefront.

What have you learned from your Mentee? I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Shelby and learn about her values and aspirations, as well as her needs in a mentor. I have learned that perseverance and determination will get you far, but when you add the elements of patience and dedication to values, you increase your resilience and probability of success. Shelby has exhibited all of these attributes and has remained true to her values throughout our mentoring relationship, which has proven to be a solid foundation for opportunity and growth.

What has worked well with you and your mentee?

What is your take on the value of mentorship?

One of the most important aspects of a mentoring relationship is the compatibility of the Mentee and Mentor. Shelby and I experienced synergy from the beginning of our mentorship. A high level of comfort and trust exists between us. Shelby is consistently open to advice and perspective, as well as diving into new self-discovery territory, which is a recipe for success in mentoring. Utilizing the right tools and resources has also had an impact on the effectiveness of the meetings. A particular “strengths exercise” resonated well with Shelby and became a foundation of our discussions. Lastly, remaining focused and committed to a meeting cadence has allowed our mentorship experience to be a positive one.

My first long-term mentor/coach relationship came during a time when I was performing well but still felt vulnerable, a bit stuck, and anxious about my future. My life and career changed drastically because of the support and tools I was provided. I have carried these tools with me over the years and the impact has been more profound and fruitful than I could have ever imagined. In mentorship, we have an invaluable opportunity to share our intricate and unique experiences by providing perspective, guidance, and intuition, as well as a space for self-discovery. This can lead to a lifelong trusted partnership that evolves as the Mentee and Mentor grow together, in addition to life fulfilment and satisfaction

My life and career changed drastically because of the support and tools I was provided. Why has the relationship been successful? PWH® pairs Mentees with Mentors through a sophisticated matching process, and this has absolutely had a positive impact on our mentorship relationship. In addition, mentorships are successful when both the Mentor and Mentee are willing to be flexible and learning is mutual. While Shelby explores new perspective and self-discovery in areas such as decision-making, communication, strategy, development, and relationships, I am learning more about Shelby and her response. This allows me to flex my approach as our mentorship proceeds. It has been a true partnership.

that otherwise may not be realized. However, it is ideal to solicit mentors and coaches at various stages of one’s development with the goal of absorbing various perspectives, etc., as this results in the mentee being able to reference various lessons as appropriate throughout life. The PWH® Mentoring Committee does a phenomenal job ensuring the Mentoring Program considers all aspects of successful mentoring and I am honored to be a part of it.

HEALTH INDUSTRY DISTRIBUTORS ASSOCIATION

Women in Washington Shape Pandemic Preparedness Policy By Linda Rouse O’Neill, Vice President, Supply Chain Policy and Executive Branch Relations, Health Industry Distributors Association

Many of the most prominent public sector roles in pandemic preparedness are currently held by women. HIDA is working closely with these leaders to ensure our voices are heard in Washington, DC.

In the Biden Administration > HIDA recently met with Dawn O’Connell, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the Department of Health and Human Services. We had a lengthy and detailed conversation about her priorities. Secretary O’Connell values the need for a strong public/private partnership within the supply chain, and is working to institutionalize all the progress that has been accomplished throughout the COVID-19 response.

Debbie Dingell

Jackie Walorski

Maggie Hassan

Patty Murray

On Capitol Hill > Two of the most significant pieces of pandemic preparedness legislation in Congress have been introduced and championed by women. > The Medical Supplies for Pandemics Act of 2021, introduced by Representatives Debbie Dingell (D-Michigan) and Jackie Walorski (R-Indiana), creates incentives to geographically diversify production of medical supplies and maintains domestic reserves of critical medical supplies like personal protective equipment and diagnostic tests.

18

> The Strengthening America’s Strategic National Stockpile Act was introduced in the House by Representative Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) and in the Senate by Senator Maggie Hassan (D-New Hampshire). This legislation would modernize the Strategic National Stockpile by directing it to work with the

medical supply chain to enhance supply chain elasticity and solidify public/private partnerships. > HIDA’s work with Congresswomen Slotkin, Dingell, and Walorski ensured key pandemic preparedness language passed the House of Representatives – not once, not twice, but five times.

Spring 2022 • PWH® Connect Journal • mypwh.org

> Senator Patty Murray (D-Washington) is the Chairwoman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. She has jurisdiction over legislation that governs pandemic preparedness, and is currently working on comprehensive preparedness legislation that would codify many of

the best practices established during the pandemic. > We continue to work closely with Chairwoman Murray and Senator Hassan to get key legislation across the finish line to support the invaluable work of healthcare distributors during public health emergencies.

The Health Industry Distributors Association (HIDA) represents the country’s medical product distributors – the nation’s essential link between manufacturers and patient caregivers. HIDA members offer critical services increasing the efficiency of U.S. healthcare providers, including hospitals, nursing homes, laboratories, home care, and physician practices. For more information, visit HIDA.org.
