NHBWA Member Organized Business Mixer By Lilian de la Torre-Jimenez Nancy Ramos, the recipient of the Well Fargo Small Business Award granted to NHBWA this 2010, organized a business mixer to promote networking among Orange County entrepreneurial community this last August 20 at the Green Parrot in Santa Ana. Those present had the opportunity to take their corporate photo courtesy of Ramos and her new business SoCalHeadshotPhotographers.com. “I see networking not only as a form to promote but as a way to create valuable relationships. I am huge believer on connecting with the right people and developing a mutual trust. Sharing resources, Nancy Ramos knowledge and helping others grow their business, which is priceless,” said Ramos. Last May Ramos presented her business plan in a competition and won $1000 from Wells Fargo during NHBWA’s annual event. Asked about how she felt as the recipient of the Wells Fargo Award and what impact it has created in her life, Ramos said: “It has boosted my confidence. The money helps but having somebody believe in my business dreams is much more valuable. Thanks to this boost of confidence, my fears have diminished. I can take rejection and move on to the next opportunity with a stronger conviction. I can speak to people about my business with much more enthusiasm. I am now ready to face many more challenges in my business. I know that all this will help me on my journey to becoming a successful business woman.” “As members of this great organization that promotes the growth of women-owned businesses, it was important for us to be present at the event and show support for one of our members,” said Yobany Banks-McKay, NHBWA president. “Networking is so essential for us as businesswomen owners and that is why I chose to attend this event,” said Maria Lourdes Sobrino, advisory board member of NHBWA and owner of Lulu’s Dessert, the nationally recognized brand of ready-to-eat gelatins and desserts. Did you know? There Are Numerous Tax Scams You Should Be Aware Of Don’t fall victim to tax scams. Remember that if it sounds too goods to be true, it probably is. If you think you are being scammed, you can report suspected tax fraud activity by sending a completed Form 3949-A to Internal Revenue Service, Fresno, CA 93888.
Some of the common scams the IRS has seen include: • • • • • • • •
Phishing Scams via e-mail Scams Related to the Economic Stimulus Payment Frivolous Arguments Fuel Tax Credit Scams Hiding Income Offshore Employment Tax Schemes Misuse of Corporation Sole Law for Religious Organizations Schemes targeting Medical Professional and Military Families
Phishing is a tactic used by Internet-based thieves to trick unsuspecting victims into revealing personal information they can then use to access the victims’ financial accounts. These criminals use the information obtained to empty the victims’ bank accounts, run up credit card charges and apply for loans or credit in the victims’ names. Phishing scams often take the form of an e-mail that appears to come from a legitimate source. Some scam e-mails falsely claim to come from the IRS. To date, taxpayers have forwarded more than 33,000 of these scam e-mails, reflecting more than 1,500 different schemes, to the IRS. The IRS never uses e-mail to contact taxpayers about their tax issues. Taxpayers who receive unsolicited e-mail that claims to be from the IRS can forward the message to a special electronic mailbox, phishing@irs.gov.

Member Corner – Making National Headlines By Lilian de la Torre-Jimenez Teresa Saldivar is making history once again. The owner of Teresa’s Jewelers, who is celebrating her 25th anniversary, and advisory board member of NHBWA was selected recently as a board member of Jewelers of America. Teresa makes history as the first Latina to be elected to this prestigious position, where she will be interacting with the big names of the industry like Tiffany and Co. and Harry Winston. "I feel honored to have been asked to serve on the board of Jewelers of America, the national trade association for the retail jeweler. I am also proud to be the first Latina to serve on this board. My goals are to represent the independent jeweler, to contribute with my experience and to share my perspective of Hispanic consumers,” said Saldivar. “As respected leaders of successful independent, family-owned jewelry operations, they will greatly contribute to Jewelers of America’s Board leadership,” said JA Board Chairman Terry Burman, Group CEO of Sterling Limited and Chairman of Sterling Jewelers Inc. Saldivar is also the only jewelry store owner selected from Southern California for JA’s national board. Despite her busy schedule, Saldivar finds the time to continue to volunteer in important causes and events for Orange County communities. Most recently, she has spent numerous hours in the planning committee for the City of Santa Ana and the Mexican Consulate annual Fiestas de Independencia, which this year takes a different meaning as the community will also be celebrating Mexico’s Bicentennial Festivities slated September 18-19, 2010 in downtown Santa Ana. NHBWA congratulates Saldivar on her latest accomplishment.
Scholarship Highlight
A Young Woman With Her Priorities in Order By Francisco De Anda 2010 NHBWA scholarship recipient Isabel Oropeza is currently attending Pepperdine University where she is studying Organizational Communication and Non-Profit Management. Her childhood goal has always been to work for the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation in the public relations or community relations realm; however, she has decided that when she has gained substantial experience in her field, she hopes and plans to establish her own non-profit to further serve the community in which she lives. Some of Isabel’s past extracurricular activities while attending Fullerton College include being the president of MECHA, being involved with the Latina Leadership club, organizing a Thanksgiving food drive that helped feed 300 families, and lastly, coordinating a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) youth conference for junior high and high school students at risk. When her mother was diagnosed with an illness during her senior year in high school Isabel decided not to attend University of California, Santa Barbara, as originally planned and chose to attend Fullerton College instead. Isabel has worked extremely hard to make the best of her situation and as a result is now attending the prestigious Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA. Isabel is deeply thankful for the support and encouragement she received from NHBWA. We at NHBWA are convinced that Isabel will do exceptionally well at the university and has a brilliant future ahead of her.
