Dear Readers, That was the BÖRLIND highlight for 2013. The 85th Academy Awards ceremony was held in the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard in late February. Our ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Beautylounge was a popular feature at the pre-Oscar reception hosted by German Films in honor of the German nominees. We were delighted to be part of such an important media event, and regard it as yet more proof that naturalness and sustainability are becoming ever more important in the “world of glamour.” The Academy Awards, affectionately known as the “Oscars,” are the world’s most prestigious film prizes. Pay a visit to the Hollywood dream factory starting on page 16! A small bag with skincare products made the 12-hour flight to Los Angeles more bearable. It also gave us the opportunity to try out the new, refreshing AVIOLA Leg Gel from DADO SENS even before the official market launch. This exciting new product revitalizes tired, heavy legs. More information on this innovation is available starting on page 20. This is the year of the damask rose. We procure the essential oil and rose water for our products from a socio-ecological project in Iran. Mystical Rose Water from TAUTROPFEN enraptures the senses with its refreshing fragrance while at the same time revitalizing the skin with an ample supply of moisture. Read more about this medicinal plant of the year on page 22. This spring/summer issue is once again brimming with wonderful information, inspiration and helpful tips for skin, body and soul. Please also note our recruiting campaign “Become a BÖRLIND product tester!” on page 9. Take part and discover the variety of our product world. Your opinion is important to us.

”Molto bene! I love dishes like pasta with truffle!” Christiane Paul, actress and brand ambassador for ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND

Good, Better, White Truffles Irresistible delicacy for skin and palate

SERVED IN STYLE. Antonio Bottalico, waiter at the Relais Sant’Uffizio Wellness & Spa in Asti, Piedmont, refines a helping of tagliatelle.

The white truffle is an anti-aging innovation. The Lindner family traveled to the Piedmont region of Italy together with actress Christiane Paul to see where this sought-after mushroom originates.

C

hristiane Paul and Pope Benedict XVI share a common passion. And it is not the stillness of the vineyards in the margraviate in Piedmont. Here in the romantic spa hotel Relais Sant’Uffizio, an old Dominican monastery from the 17th century, the pope emeritus enjoyed the luxurious truffles over homemade gnocchi back when he was still Cardinal Ratzinger. Christiane Paul is just as susceptible to the call of this white diamond. She can hardly wait for the opportunity to once again savor this unique flavor. Yet she finds it difficult to describe: “White truffles have their own entirely unique taste,” she says thoughtfully after struggling to find something to compare it with. “I actually ate truffle for the first time several years ago. I had always heard and read about it, but never tried it. Today I love dishes like pasta with truffles,” she says.

Versatile tuber: unique taste, highly beneficial for the skin The delicacy is now within arm’s reach as waiter Antonio Bottalico appears in front of her and her plate of homemade tagliatelle. In his hands he carries a “Tartufo Bianco d’Alba,” one of the most expensive edible mushrooms in the world. A kilo of white truffle costs up to EUR 9,000, but a few grams are enough to transport gourmets into a state of bliss. Antonio freshly grates the object of desire into paper-thin sheets in front of his guest at the table. It is usually minimalist dishes such as noodles, risotto, fish, polenta or scrambled eggs that set the stage on which the precious fungi can display its true talent. A white truffle is never cooked. That would destroy its incomparable aroma: with a strong scent and subtle flavor, it awakens many associations.

LUXURIOUS TEXTURE. The BÖRLIND Biolifting Complex (white truffle, botanical hyaluronic acid, vitamins) is a component of all six products.

The perfect menu for demanding skin NatuRoyale Biolifting Anti-Aging series with the Biolifting complex made from white truffle, botanical hyaluronic acid and vitamins: Appetizer à la crème: creamy cleansing with mild saccharoidal surfactants, shea butter and meadowfoam seed oil. Paired with a gentle enzyme peeling with aloe vera and enzymes that can be performed as an initial pre-cleansing step or following cleansing. Intermediate course to taste: Lifting Serum to strengthen the skin and provide extra moisture. Main course made to order: the daytime cream Day Active refreshes and smooths while the nighttime cream Night Repair enhances the regeneration effect. The icing on the cake: special Eye and Lip Contour care with paracress and Szechuan pepper.

IN PIEDMONT. Christiane Paul, Trifulau Giorgio Romagnolo and Daniela Lindner searching for truffles.

“No pleasure is fleeting, for the impression it leaves behind is permanent.” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

At a charity event at Hotel Adlon, Johann Lafer described a splendid 750-gram specimen from Piedmont up for auction as “pleasantly pungent, earthy, aromatic, strongly reminiscent of garlic, unusually clear, with an addictive scent.” Others say that the white truffle smells of hay and honey and that the delicate scent of garlic is accompanied by the aroma of gorgonzola.

Unique active ingredient complex with white truffle from BÖRLIND Perhaps it was this type of intoxicating taste experience that inspired BÖRLIND CEO Michael Lindner. Savoring truffle dishes and Barolo on the terrace e of the home of an Italian friend in Piemont, he heard something that made him site up and take notice: “I learned that the white truffle so famous in this region has many positive effects on the skin as well. We began testing in our development laboratory in Calw. In a sophisticated combination with other ingredients, it has a smoothing, revitalizing and firming effect on the skin,” Lindner explains with great enthusiasm. Bingo. The crown jewels of the culinary world in a ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND formula. That is a genuine innovation in the world of natural cosmetics. The biolifting complex developed in the BÖRLIND laboratory and

6 | natural woman 1_2013

made from white truffle extract, a botanical hyaluronic acid from Chinese jelly fungus and vitamins delivers an intensive supply of moisture and activates the cell regeneration processes. Fine lines and wrinkles are smoothed away. In addition to this luxurious combination of active ingredients, the NatuRoyale Biolifting skincare series includes the following anti-aging substances: tiger grass, rose oil, white lupin, paracress, lily of the sea, Sichuan pepper and high-quality plant oils from jojoba and macadamia nuts as well as camelina. “Our gold series,” reports Daniela Lindner, “has only been available for a few months now but is already enormously popular. The combination of lovely fragrance, smoothness and proven, visible impact appeals to many women.” “I can especially recommend the serum and the enzyme peeling,” Christiane Paul adds. The white truffle is an exceptional active substance from a special region in northwest Italy used for skincare purposes in only the most exclusive cosmetic products. Reason enough for Daniela and Michael Lindner to savor a dish of this noble fungus with brand ambassador Christiane Paul before setting off in search of treasure with the the famous truffle hunter Giorgio Romagnolo and his faithful friends, two English Pointers, in the truffle forests and fields of Piedmont. n

“The truffles are gathered in Piedmont and processed at room temperature using an especially gentle procedure.” Guylaine Le Loarer, Lead Developer at BÖRLIND

Dive In! The power of the ocean: a fountain of youth for the skin A vacation at the seaside makes us feels as if we have been reborn. The skin is soft, smooth and looks visibly refreshed. Discover the healing substances in the tubes and jars from the BÖRLIND world of products.

SEA WATER

ALGAE

Feel– the dynamic freshness of the ocean – a dip in the salty water relaxes the body and gently cleanses the skin. What’s more, the minerals are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, making them ideal for skin with a tendency for blemishes. “Maris aqua” is an ingredient in many skincare products for good reason. It helps the skin retain moisture. This vital freshness of the ocean can be found in the TAUTROPFEN shower gel as well as in the facial skincare emulsion in the fluidum Brittany line.

Algae extracts are one of the areas of specialization of Guylaine Le Loarer, Lead Developer at BÖRLIND. “Yes, they are unbeatable, my favorite active ingredients,” says the Frenchwoman who grew up on the coast of Brittany. The people there have known of the healing powers of these sea dwellers since ancient times. They are one of the most important plants for our ecosystem. After all, they produce a large share of the earth’s oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. They are thought to have been the only living organism in the world for two and half billion years. “I am fascinated by the fact that researchers are only familiar with 20 percent of all algae and have not even discovered many species yet,” explains the head ofresearch and development. Algae are masters of survival and are among the most versatile and nutrient-rich plants in existence. Scientists are always identifying new substances in them, forexample in brown and red algae. These so-called macro algae are rich in minerals, fatty acids and oligosaccharides such as polysaccharides that are able to bind water. “Certain molecules smooth the skin, others have an anti-inflammatory, protective

SALT Nourishing, refining, healing. Whether to treat atopic dermatitis or simply for winter-weary, stressed skin – sea salt has many beneficial effects: It firms, stimulates microcirculation and removes dead skin cells and impurities, leaving behind babysoft skin. Sea salt is contained in products such as the following: TAUTROPFEN fluidum Gentle Body Scrub and fluidum Refreshing Body Spray. In the medical skincare brand DADO SENS from BÖRLIND, sea salt can be found in the ExtroDerm Facial Cleanser for dry and sensitive skin.

or moisturizing effect,” explains Le Loarer. Red algae and brown algae are used in nearly a hundred BÖRLIND skincare products. In the ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND product range these include: Anti-Stress Mask, LL Regeneration Vital Cream Mask, Aquanature skincare line, Bodysilhouette Firming Body Lotion, Bustcontour Firming Bust Care and the sun protection product line SUN. The all-rounder algae is an ingredient in many TAUTROPFEN and DADO SENS products as well.

SALICORNIA This marsh plant can survive up to six hours without water at low tide. Native to the mud flats of coastal sea areas, it is very rich in minerals. Salicornia, also known as glasswort, is an old wild vegetable that enjoys great popularity among gourmets. With its rather salty flavor and fleshy consistency, it – adds a refined note to seared or roasted– green salads, fish dishes an pasta. This is why salicornia is sometimes referred to as “sea asparagus.” Salicornia Herbacea extract is one of the active substance stars in the ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND Aquanature skincare series: it supports the skin’s vital moisture-binding function by promoting urea synthesis.

Sun? But of course! Well-protected and softly bronzed The gray clouds are finally making way for the true star of the summer. The sun is wearing its most winning smile. If wellprotected, skin can be as radiant as the sunshine.

T

he cold days are over. Let there be light! We all know how good a brief sunbath feels: our spirits revive, filling us with a sense of joy. The sun releases our happiness hormones. In particular serotonin. It also enables the skin to form sufficient amounts of Vitamin D, a hormone essential for bone formation and healthy muscles. The cells in our immune system also need Vitamin D in order to transform into active killer cells. However, ten minutes of sunbathing are fully sufficient for a hormone rush. Those who want to spend more time in the sun without protection should know both what their own limits are and what light protection factor they need. While the Celtic skin type – with very fair skin and freckles – should stay in the sun for no more than five to ten minutes without protection, the Mediterranean type –

with light brown skin and dark hair – can linger nearly 40 minutes outside without sun cream.

Skin tans even with sun cream, but more gently The body’s own protective system, made up of DNA, melanin and hair, works differently for each person: however, its cannot absorb an unlimited amount of UV rays and transform them into heat. UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, where they damage the tissue and generate free radicals. At some point, this will make the skin look old. UVB rays affect the epidermis, causing sunburns and promoting the occurrence of skin cancer. The right sun protection products can help to reduce this risk. If your body has a self-protection time of ten minutes, SPF 30

Sea buckthorn and Vitamin E help to combat aging of the skin. DNA-Protect Sun Cream contains an additional active ingredient complex made from sugarcane, rice and rosemary. It protects against free radicals and supports DNA repair in the cells. With perfect preparation, you can enjoy your time in the sun to the fullest! n

Three-fold protection: UV filter, radical catcher, moisturizer For safe time in the sun, the products from the ANNEMARIE BĂ–RLIND SUN line contain a combination of highly effective UV filters and extract of Kombu seaweed, which has developed its own protective system to cope with hours of bright sun exposure during low tide. Dominika Bronner had the privilege of joining BÖRLIND at the Academy Awards ceremony in Hollywood. There she did the makeup for VIPs in the BÖRLND Beautylounge at the pre-Oscar reception in Villa Aurora. Dominika’s makeup tip from Hollywood: “Black eyeliner to bring out the eyes was a must on the red carpet. Lips were elegant in glossy red tones.” Read more about the Oscars on page 16. A colorful candy look is in store for us this spring and summer, however: In addition to pastel hues, bright blue, turquoise and pink are summertime essentials.

Neon colors are en vogue this summer for the lips. Those who prefer a more natural yet still radiant look will be spot on with “hot pink” from ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND. A Quiet Heroine Sister Edith: a life devoted to children in need

For 40 years now, Sister Edith has been the kind soul in the Elisabethstift orphanage in Berlin. Daniela Lindner visited her with toys, clothing and a check for the children.

“Every single chestnut leaf is different and unique. This is how we view the children as well.” Sister Edith (69), pictured here in front of one of the chestnut trees on the main grounds

T

he front door of the Elisabethstift rings in the middle of the night. It is the police with a three-year-old girl. Her name is Anna. Her face is as white as snow. Delicate, thin and rigid with fear, she keeps her eyes tightly closed. But is it fear alone that keeps her even from blinking? “No,” recalls Sister Edith, “we learned that the little girl had not once seen the light of day. For two weeks, Anna could not bear even a ray of sunshine.”

Children are given new hope at the Elisabethstift Anna spent the first three years of her life in an attic apartment. With no windows. No chairs. No bed. A mattress was her only comfort. “If we tried touch her, she screamed as if it was a matter of life or death. I can remember it as if it were yesterday. You don’t forget something like that,” says the nun, visibly moved. Today, Anna is 29 years old and completing a doctorate in computer science. “We still maintain very good contact with one another,” says the deaconess with a smile. After starting to heal both physically and emotionally, Anna was adopted. In Anna’s time at the orphanage, Sister Edith, her fellow nuns and the educators gave her all the things she may otherwise have never experienced: safety, care, a sense of being important, love a real home. Other babies,

THANKFUL. Sister Edith is delighted by the support from BÖRLIND.

Her eyes light up with happiness when she talks about her protégées who learned to smile again at the orphanage. Each small soul has its own unique story. Every child must be viewed as an individual. What helps one, might make another skeptical. Many children are initially withdrawn, will not let anyone near them, cannot even let down their guard in play. At the end of last year, Sister Edith accepted, on behalf of the Elisabethstift, the Surprise Bambi and a monetary donation from the “Tribute to Bambi – Aid for Children in Need” foundation. “When

I heard Sister Edith speaking on the stage, I new right away,” explains Daniela Lindner, mother of four and a member of the BÖRLIND management team. When Johannes B. Kerner surprised Sister Edith with the golden trophy, she humbly said: “If I had known this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have come.” A very modest person, she does not like being feted as a heroine. But she is one to me. A quiet heroine, whose untiring dedication we are glad to support as a natural cosmetics company,” promises Daniela Lindner. Crisis manager, nurse, educator and trusted confidant – that was Sister Edith’s role for hundreds of traumatized children for 40 years of service. She recently retired. Well, almost. She can’t stop entirely and still actively supports the orphanage manager in her many tasks: “When I go to the supermarket, I sometimes take one of the children with me. And in the evenings, I like to walk through the living groups and play with them a little. After all, the Elisabethstift is my home. I spent the majority of my life here.” n

children and young adults face situations much like this girl did. The Elisabethstift orphanage in Berlin has room for 146 children ages 0 to 18. Sister Edith keeps a detailed record of each individual child’s story.“ I have looked after more than 300 children in my nearly 40 years in living groups,” she says in summary.

RESIDENCE FOR ARTISTS. The reception for the German Oscar nominees was held at Villa Aurora.

BÖRLIND makeup at the pre-Oscar party Villa Aurora in Los Angeles is the perfect venue for a reception to honor the German Oscar nominees: German Films, the information and advisory center that promotes German films worldwide, invites the teams from German co-productions to the famous artists’ residence each year. “I was a guest here once before, 13 years ago,” says Christiane Paul. “It is a place for international cultural encounters and a fantastic temporary residence for German scholarship holders

from the spheres of film, art and literature.” The approximately 600 guests included actress Veronica Ferres, Udo Kier and Tyron Ricketts. Well-known media personalities such as presenter Karen Webb, columnists Marie Waldburg and Ariane Sommer as well as Patricia Riekel, editor-in-chief of the German women’s magazine “Bunte” were also present. At the pre-Oscar reception among the breathtaking ambiance of Villa Aurora, actress Christiane Paul presented the guests with natural cosmetics from ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND as well as the nominees from the German co-productions “Liebe,” “The Gatekeepers” and “Open Heart.” On February 24, the long-awaited announcement was finally made: And the Oscar goes to Michael Haneke and his touching melodrama “Liebe.”“I already saw the film at the film festival in Cannes and am very pleased that it won,” said Paul. Summing up his impressions, he says: “I was deeply touched by the film because of its stark portrayal of aging and how we must come to terms with death. As is typical of Haneke, he spares the viewer nothing.” The award for the best American film went to “Argo” from Ben Affleck, while the GermanAustrian actor Christoph Waltz took home the Oscar for best supporting actor in Quentin Tarantino’s western “Django Unchained.” With a laugh, Christiane Paul recalls a comment by a critic published in the newspaper “USA Today” before the award ceremony:“Tommy Lee AT THE PRE-OSCAR PARTY. Jones will get it, but it should go Christiane Paul, Oliver to Christoph Waltz.” It did. A happy Mahrdt (German Films) end à la Hollywood. Just the way it and Daniela Lindner. is supposed to be. n

ÖRLIND accompanies stars from all over the world to the European Film Awards, the Bambi, the Golden Palm and now to the Academy Awards as well. In Hollywood, guests at the pre-Oscar reception sponsored by German Films had the opportunity for a pampering session in the ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND makeup lounge. This natural cosmetics brand from the Black Forest is welcomed on red carpets around the world. An evergrowing number of celebrities are becoming fans of natural skincare products and makeup.“The Beautylounge staffed by our makeup artists is always a hitat after-show parties and receptions in the film and media industry,” says Daniela Lindner happily.

Stars want green glamour: natural cosmetics are attracting fans worldwide Christiane Paul, who accompanied Daniela Lindner and her team to Hollywood as the BÖRLIND brand ambassador, knows from her many years of experience with women colleagues just how important natural cosmetics and natural makeup have become to them: “A lot has changed in the past ten years. In the creative fields, awareness of sustainability is high. And skincare products are no exception. ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND is proof that it is possible to produce high-quality, luxurious cosmetics based on natural ingredients that are every bit as good as conventional luxury brands.” ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND has long since become an established player in the market: the products from Calw have evolved into a prominent cosmetic brand over the past 20 years. Helping others find a way to leave poverty behind and lead a more self-determined life – when BÖRLIND purchases raw materials from third world countries, this is its code of honor. It is also the reason the company received the Innovation Award for Vocational Education Projects in Developing Countries, known as BMZ for short, for its shea butter educational project in Mali. “The successful projects in our BMZ competition serve as role models,” says Gudrun Kopp from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Together with Häuser der Hoffnung e.V., BÖRLIND is assisting some 50 Malian families with financial aid, fixed supply contracts, establishment of laboratories and training of the women who produce the shea butter.

Award-winning PRODUCT OF THE YEAR. A BÖRLIND product is honored for the third consecutive time: a jury of experts singled out the new form of the Aquanature Moisturising Cream as the product of the year 2013. It provides mature skin with an intensive moisture boost.

Rewarding Paths

Fair trade in sourcing of raw materials BÖRLIND Lead Developer Guylaine Le Loarer reports on projects around the world and the challenges they face. What projects are supported? We have been actively involved in fair trade for years now. For example, we purchase biological fair trade oils from Kenya, rose oil and rose water from a project in the Iranian province of Kerman and shea butter from Mali.

What is especially important in the cooperation with the Malians? I think genuine affection for the people and the culture is essential. Mutual trust, in the form of accepting and understanding one another’s differences, is also important. We are dependent on the good will of the Malians as well, because of the detailed documentation, reports, etc. that we need

for our certification. The language is the key: Thankfully I speak French – as my mother tongue, otherwise I could not supervise the projects there.

What are some of the typical difficulties in sourcing raw materials for cosmetic products? Because they are plant-based substances, the quantity can vary greatly depending on the weather, harvest and processing conditions. The shea nut harvest in summer of 2012 was poor because of the drought. The Malians tell me they expect a very good harvest this summer, however, because the trees are blooming heavily right now. We have meanwhile achieved a very good quality butter that has been biocertified (Ecocert). Our on-site team is currently processing the second harvest from the summer of 2012. The nuts have been stored in the village since the harvest and are now being brought to the non-profit cooperative Jigiya Bon where they

work Project Mali in on site will be processed into butter. Among other things, this cooperative ensures that the women receive a fair wage for their hard work. The finished shea butter, also known as karite butter, is transported to Bamako by truck and then flown to Germany by plane. Transport takes a total of four days.

How is the project affected by the current political situation in Mali? Happily, our project is continuing. The village is three hours south of Mali’s capital city of Bamako, which is in the south of the country. So far, only the north has been affected by the unrest. We are naturally concerned that the situation could escalate nationwide. If I did not inform the production manager of the situation in the north as often as I do, she wouldn’t know anything about it because dissemination of news in the bush is very difficult. There is no Internet, my text messages are their only source of information.

Veins Light-footed all day long: natural strengthening for blood vessels

Weak veins need help. DADO SENS has developed a powerful new active substance combination made from four different plants for daily skincare.

A

fter a long day, even the soft band of silk socks feels like a hard rope on the calves. The legs are restless, tingling, swollen and feel as if they are burning. One in every five women is affected. “It’s a widespread affliction,” says the Deutsche VenenLiga e.V. Every day, the blood vessels transport 7,000 liters of blood – working against gravity – back to the heart. This feat is made possible by the calf muscle pump and the venous valves. If the venous valve does not close correctly, the flow of blood back to the heart is slowed. Blood

gathers in the legs. The walls of the blood vessels become increasingly instable, enabling fluid to escape into the surrounding tissues and causing the legs to swell. Spider veins appear. When this happens, the veins in the epidermis are visible as red or dark blue lines.

A mix of treatments is the best: cooling, movement, hot and cold water baths Potential serious consequences of weak veins are varicose veins, vein infections and thromboses. Risk factors include long periods of time spent standing or sitting, crossing the legs, tight clothing, alcohol, excessive sun exposure and long baths in overly hot water. Women who wear high heels on a daily basis weaken the function of the calf muscle pump in the long term. Doctors recommend increasing the elasticity of the veins. in a variety of bright colors – these tips will help: take the stairs whenever possible, use every opportunity to stretch your legs, put your legs up a few times a day, enjoy massages, take part in an endurance sport, drink lots of water, soak legs alternatingly in hot and cold water. A regular diet the includes fish, linseed oil and nuts supplies important omega-3 fatty acids helps promote the elasticity of the veins.

Prevention: do something good for your veins every day You should always have a medical care product on hand to help combat swollen legs and spider veins. Products containing horse chestnut extract are the best choice. It is well known for strengthening the walls of the blood vessels, sealing them and preventing water from collecting in the tissues. In addition, it features impressive anti-inflammatory properties. And in combination with other plant extracts, horse chestnut can do even more! The new product DADO SENS AVIOLA Refreshing Leg Gel was developed with Aristotle’s motto – “The whole is more than the sum of its parts” – in mind. In addition to horse chestnut, the following extracts work in synergy here: rich in Vitamin C, lesser celandine can reduce the size of enlarged veins. This effect is supported by blood orange extract. The citrus fruit also contains hesperidin, a bioflavonoid that strengthens collagen and tissue. In addition, a red algae extract discovered only a few years ago regulates microcirculation, thereby preventing pooling of blood in the veins. This powerful natural quartet is the basis for the new DADO SENS energizing special care that absorbs rapidly and provides a pleasant cooling sensation. Simply apply in the morning and evening, starting with the feet and working towards the thighs. Massage in gently and start enjoying life with a new sense of lightness. n

Powerful innovation AVIOLA Refreshing Leg Gel helps tired, heavy legs. Extracts of lesser celandine, horse chestnut, bitter orange and red algae improve microcirculation.

DADO SENS products are available in health food stores and in the Web shop at www.dadosens.com.

e crave refreshment when sitting in a poorly ventilated office in the summer heat or rushing from appointment to appointment through the sweltering streets: where is the ocean I can jump into, where are the ice cubes to cool my temples with? The right skincare is almost as refreshing as a dip in the sea. It should boost moisture without feeling oily, revitalizing and soothing to heated skin. Heavy sweating and exposure to UV rays can cause the skin to dry out faster. The cells have to work hard in order to keep the regeneration process going. Lotions, gels, light creams and sprays for the face and

When TAUTROPFEN Hyaluronate Moisturising Gel is applied, a botanical hyaluronic acid from the Chinese tremella mushroom envelops the skin like a protective film, helping to bind and retain moisture. Konjac root extract from the Asian devil’s tongue supplies additional moisture while organic aloe vera soothes the skin.

Spray, gel, nectar: cooling for heated complexions Hyaluronate Moisturising Cream also contains intensively nourishing shea butter. Ideal supplementary care for dry, stressed and demanding skin. This revitalizing sensation of freshness gently wakens the senses on summer mornings and provides them with a pleasant retreat in the evenings. Make your summer dreams come true with TAUTROPFEN. n

at the Barre Barre Concept – the new fitness trend from the U.S.A.

Toned upper arms, a firm bottom, shapely legs and a narrow waist. Plus the upright and graceful posture of a prima ballerina – this workout turns more than just long-cherished dreams from girlhood into reality.

nd one, two, three and one ...,” the instructor’s voice echoes through the hall. In perfect synchronization, eight women assume a graceful posture at the bar, copying their trainer Vivien Feld from the dance studio VI-Dance in Münster. On the tips of their toes and with legs spread in a V-position, they

sink into a squat while lifting and lowering their heels, training their buttocks and leg muscles. This plié, also known as first position in ballet, is the basic position for all exercises in ballet and also a fixed component of the Barre Concept, the new star in the fitness sky. The word “barre” is French and simply means “bar.”

The whole-body workout with unbeatable aesthetics The Barre Concept has been practiced in the United States for some time now, where it has attracted prominent fans such as Madonna and Drew Barrymore. “What makes this whole-body workout so unique is that it gently combines ballet techniques with elements of Pilates, yoga and light weight training,” explains. In Germany,

the professional dancer and Pilates and zumba trainer Sabine Heydecker discovered this training at the bar in 2010. There is none of the rigid strictness of ballet à la Black Swan here, however. The exercises are elegant, yet the atmosphere is casual and the fun factor is high. Instead of classical music, sessions are accompanied by pop songs, much like in a gym. You won’t need either ballet shoes or a tutu for a Barre Concept workout. Well-fitting, tight sports clothing is fully sufficient. Training takes place in bare feet, much like yoga. Those who want to are welcome to wear ballet shoes, however. It is a sure means of intensifying the “prima ballerina” feeling! All of the participants in Vivien Feld’s course chose the latter option. “I do think it is the ballet component of the workout that entices most women to give the Barre Concept a try,” says the instructor. Many women danced ballet

earlier in their lives and miss this graceful way of moving. Yet most them can no longer participate in a real ballet course due to age or illness. This is where the Barre Concept comes in: “The great things is that everyone can do it, even those who have a damaged spinal disc, because this type of exercise strengthens the back muscles and the entire core,” says Feld.

Nearly all of the movements are soft and flowing Participants do not need to have past experience with ballet. “The Barre Concept is suitable for everyone – from women who want to lose weight or tone their figure all the way to professional athletes seeking a new challenge,” adds Feld. “The objective of the training is to achieve the physically balanced body of a dancer with stomach, legs and buttocks aesthetically defined by the exercises and a posture that radiates attractiveness and vitality.” The starting point of the training is always the first ballet position and centering of the core. This is accomplished by tightening the muscles of the stomach and tipping the pelvis forward, a movement known as the “tuck.” Alternating between dynamic exercise sequences at

the bar and on the matt, the Barre Concept gives every muscle a good workout. “It promotes the strength, flexibility, endurance, speed and elasticity of the muscles,” Feld explains. Each tensioning phase is followed by a relaxing stretching phase. The deeper the stretch, the more wonderful the feeling of relaxation. This positive body experience is not just fun, it triggers feelings of happiness. One quickly learns to consciously experience and enjoy each individual exercise. These targeted stretching units enhance the elasticity of the muscles and tendons and increase circulation. “That promotes flexibility,” Feld explains. “Because of the high proportion of stretching, the program is also especially suited for men, who often have shortened muscles that can lead to a limited range of motion.” Participants can see themselves in the

mirror the entire time, helping to prevent incorrect posture. There are many details that must be taken into account in every move and one needs to concentrate in order to perform the exercises correctly. Everyday thoughts and problems must be put aside as a result of the high level of concentration necessary for the movements – making the Barre Concept ideal for re-focusing the mind while acquiring a good sense of body awareness at the same time. You can definitely expect sore muscles after the initial training session. Once this phase is over, however, a wonderful sense of lightness ensues – both mentally and physically. Kastner & Öhler has expanded the selection of natural cosmetics at all of its new stores with beauty departments and has been successfully carrying the products from ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND since 2010. “The days in which natural cosmetics were only available in health food stores are long behind us,” confirms Helga Payer, BÖRLIND Sales Director for Austria. Natural cosmetics have established a fixed place for themselves in the lifestyle sector. “This is clearly evident in Austria,” Helga Payer adds. Consumers have become more demanding. They are questioning conventional cosmetics and want to care for themselves with products containing ingredients that are good for their skin. “We used to have to fight for placement in exclusive shops. Now the companies come to us,” says the Sales Director with pleasure. It therefore comes as no

surprise that media interest is growing steadily as well. More than 40 editors attended the most recent ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND product presentation at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Vienna: “They were excited by the variety of our products and the wealth of plant-based active ingredients,” says Helga Payer.

here an exclusive atmosphere meets exceptional quality: Kastner & Öhler is known as one of Austria’s most beautiful department stores. Years ago, when the flagship store on Sackstraße in Graz added natural cosmetics to its range, it sought to offer its customers authentic skincare products as well as a taste of the French way of life. After all, France is not only synonymous with fashion, it is also regarded as the motherland of cosmetics. The trend to natural cosmetics has long since established itself in the mainstream. It is thus only natural that
