Dear Readers,

So fresh! So fruity!

BODYlind FRESH is the perfect care range for velvety-soft skin right around the clock. Superior fig extract supplies long-lasting moisture and makes for feel-good freshness. Precious oils keep the skin noticeably soft and supple. New Dry Body Oil has a particularly light, rapidly absorbed texture, and leaves the skin feeling very pleasant.

Make-up innovation: exactly what is in the new loose powder?

Approximately seven million people in Germany are vegetarians. And an ever-increasing number are abstaining from meat on a frequent basis and looking for healthy, delicious alternatives. Many people avoid all products derived from dead animals or containing substances from animal carcasses. Actress Marion Kracht is one of these people. She cooks and enjoys not only pure vegetarian meals, she has even created her own vegan range of organic food products called vevenga. I am especially pleased that she joined us to cook a vegan summer menu exclusively for “natural woman.” Turn to page 4 to see Marion Kracht in action and find a few of her recipes to try at home. Likewise, all of the products made by our company are free of substances from dead animals and thus 100 percent suitable for vegetarians. Approximately 80 percent of the products are in fact vegan cosmetics (for a list please visit http://unternehmen.boerlind.com/ die-marke/qualitaet/vegan). They contain no animal extracts or products from animals such as carmine, the red dye from the cochineal insect. In the interest of product quality, we do use animal-based raw materials such as beeswax in a few cases because it improves the consistency of mascara or regulates the smoothness of lipstick.

Sincerely yours,

350 ml rice milk | 150 g black quinoa (natural food store or organic food shop) | 40 g agave syrup | 60 ml grape seed oil | 50 ml rice milk | 50 g buckwheat wholemeal flour | 125 g almonds, ground | 7 g baking powder | 2 pinches of rock salt

300 g tamarillos (organic food store) | 50 ml olive oil | 15 g ginger, grated | 60 g onions, finely diced | 1 chili | 125 ml tomato vinegar | 75 g whole cane sugar | 1 bay leaf | 2 pinches of rock salt

300 g glasswort | white pepper | olive oil

Simmer 300 ml of the rice milk with the quinoa over low heat for 30 minutes. In the meantime, mix the agave syrup, the grape seed oil and 50 ml of the rice milk with the buckwheat wholemeal flour and the ground almonds, baking powder and salt. Add this mixture to the pre-cooked quinoa and blend gently with a mixer. Brush silicone baking molds with oil. Distribute the mixture equally into the molds and place in an oven set to 150 °C or 300 °F (convection) for 40 minutes.

Remove the stem from the tamarillo (tree tomato) and cut an X into the bottom of it. Blanch in boiling water for several minutes and then quench in ice water. Pull off the skins and dice the pulp. Sauté the ginger, onion, chili, whole cane sugar and bay leaf in olive oil. Add diced tamarillo and vinegar and continue sautéing until thickened. Remove the bay leaf and season to taste with salt.

Goji berry granita

To make the almond milk, soak the almonds in hot water for 8 hours. Purée the soaked almonds with 500 ml of hot water. Pass the mixture through a cloth. Sweeten to taste with agave syrup. To make the espuma, mix the silken tofu, the almond milk and the almond oil. Dissolve the agar in 100 ml of the almond milk mixture and then stir in the rest of the mixture. Fill into the espuma whipper or whip cream dispenser and screw on two iSi chargers. Leave to cool for 4 hours. Garnish the goji berry granita with the espuma.

Most of us presenters spend nearly an hour getting our make-up done before a show. What the make-up artists manage in this time is amazing: hair, make-up and not infrequently a brief, refreshing massage, an encouraging word and helpful make-up tips! One of the top make-up artists regularly does my make-up for my online fashion show “IN Fashion” (www.in.de) and has already had half of Hollywood under his powder brush: Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Karolína Kurková. Ayhan Üstün! His tricks are legendary! The most important thing first: Before applying make-up, I always use a good serum to create a base for the skin and supply it with moisture. A funny trick to avoid getting lipstick on your teeth: As soon as the lipstick has been applied, stick a finger in your mouth – ideally your index finger – and pull it out slowly while pursing your lips as if to kiss someone. It may not look exactly Grated, but the excess lipstick lands on your finger and will not mess up your teeth! If you have unruly eyebrows, simply spray hairspray on a cotton swab and use it to smooth out your brows. Press them into shape, let dry – voilà! Ayhan’s special type for natural-looking make-up: Use a little gloss powder to set soft glossy accents on the bridge of the nose, cheek bones and jaw line. That creates a very natural look. So whip out those powder puffs and create an even more beautiful you.

The city’s romantic, picturesque charm and fashion from sought-after designers such as Sonia Rykiel, Isabel Marant or the currently hippest label, The Kooples, stirs longings for a sojourn in this cosmopolitan city. When we think of Paris, however, we also think of the beautiful French women with their stunningly elegant sense of style. They are regarded as experts in the “no make-up” look – natural, calm yet perfectly styled. No matter if you are brunette or blonde or prefer cool or warm tones, the color palette in the new makeup collection flatters any woman: In the powder eyeshadows, the nuances light rose, gold, green moss, mauve, mocha, stone, golden green, blue pearl, apricot and dark plum create expressive eyes. The range of lipsticks includes a fresh, brilliant ruby hue entitled paris red as well as both warm and cool shades of red. Follow these make-up tips to easily create your own elegant yet natural summer look: Prep your face by applying a light day cream or fluid to provide the skin with optimum moisture. Then cover pigmentation marks, rings under the eyes and red patches on the sides of the nose and cheeks with the liquid concealer. It masks minor imperfections naturally using light-reflecting pigments.

Lighten the outer corners of your eyes and mouth to make your face appear more youthful. Reduced elasticity creates shadows in these areas that make the face appear older. Work the concealer cream into the skin with a gentle patting motion until it is perfectly blended. Then pat the foundation on as well. Now fix it in place with a loose powder: Dust the powder on with a thick brush, always moving from the top to the bottom of the face. This will prevent hairs from sticking out. The powder absorbs any oil that forms over the course of the day, stopping shine. At the same time, the microfine shimmer pigments create a soft-focus effect. Choose two colors for the eye make-up, as this gives the eyes more depth. Apply the lighter tone, such as skin, to the moveable lid and set extra highlights under the brow and on the inner lid. Then use the darker color, such as brown delight, just for accents: Apply along the fold of the lid and smudge upwards and outwards. Blend the colors into one another. The look can be intensified in the evening with eyeliner on the upper lid line. Apply mascara to your eyelashes. For your mouth, select a contour pencil in a natural shade that matches the color of your own lips. Apply the contour pencil by starting at the corners of the mouth and moving towards the center. Apply the lipstick by starting in the center and working outwards. Et voilà, c’est Paris! áá

Make-up innovation: dance of the beauty molecules

A loose powder that preserves the skin’s natural moisture. How does that work? A peek in the cosmetics laboratory reveals the answer.

esearch paves the way for new experiences: A fluid make-up that supplies moisture and covers minor imperfections. That sounds logical. It has a liquid to creamy texture and leaves the skin feeling noticeably refreshed when applied. But a loose transparent powder? How can a dry powder that we dust onto our forehead, nose, cheeks and chin with a brush or powder puff create a silky sensation that feels almost as if the skin had just been moisturized? “Modern powders are so ultrafine that they no longer form unsightly clumps in fine lines and pores. They should feel like a transparent veil made of silk,” says Guylaine Le Loarer, Head of Research and Development at BÖRLIND GmbH.

New biotechnology: anti-aging make-up with sustained release effect “Our new powder is a combination of select micro-size ingredients that harmonize exceptionally well together and have a very special mission: They provide the skin with a sustained supply of moisture and combat fine wrinkles.” The innovative technology in the new powder consists of tiny silica beads filled with sodium salt from hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate). These tiny beads of between two and 15 micrograms in size are not visible to the naked eye. Very generally speaking, they are approximately equivalent in size to starch particles. The beads permit continual release of the hyaluronic acid to the skin, thus ensuring a long-lasting supply of moisture. In this context, it should also be noted that all BÖRLIND products containing any type of beads or exfoliant particles are guaranteed to come from natural sources. “Consumers are often uncertain about microbeads because they don’t know if they are made from microplastic or not,” says Le Loarer. Microplastic is being used more and more often in conventional shower scrubs, cleaning gels and make-up products. It serves as a cheap, lightweight filler material or exfoliant and has a slight ❯❯

Highly-molecular hyaluronic acid INSTANT IMPACT. It forms a protective layer on the skin by bonding to the corneal layer and storing moisture. Ideal for make-up products intended to create a softfocus effect.

ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND does not use any beads made from microplastic For many years now, researchers have been pointing out that the increasing volume of plastic garbage is poisoning the oceans because it does not decompose. “No polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP) is used in our skin care products,” promises Le Loarer. “Our products contain ingredients such as salt from Brittany and exfoliant particles made from jojoba nuts, bamboo or silica.” For example, the all-important hyaluronic acid in the new finishing powder is encapsulated in natural silica beads and passes through their sheaths into the skin.” The hyaluronic acid is harvested with the aid of biotechnology, using bacteria cultures that undergo a fermentation process. The hyaluronic acid is regarded as especially compatible with skin because it is naturally present in the body. It reforms every three days. Their gel-like, structuring property is formed in every cell, in tendons, ligaments, joints, mucous membranes and connective tissue, when sugar molecules bind to water. In addition, the gel-like hyaluronic acid transports and distributes nutrients faster in the organism and ensures smooth, supple skin. Unfortunately, the concentration of this rejuvenating substance decreases as we age. Excessive sunbathing and free radicals also have a negative effect on hyaluronic acid levels. If one applies creams or make-up products containing hyaluronic acid, the substance uses hydrogen bridges to bind to keratin, i.e. the skin’s corneal layer, and thus stores moisture. That smoothes the skin and leaves it feeling soft. In this way, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the skin can be raised to the levels present in youth. This active antiaging ingredient can moisturize even dry skin with a damaged barrier layer in such a way that regenerating and rehydrating care products can build up the barrier layer once again. Good to know that this innovative biotechnology combined with pearlescent pigments can create a microfine, silky finish. That is beauty with every stroke of the powder brush. ■

They are linked together by 50 bridges. “The Venice of the north” – as it is affectionately known to its fans. And it has many fans. That comes as no surprise: While other metropolises are filled with commotion and noise, Stockholm has a splendidly relaxed flair. Food and drink ❯❯ The fish specialties in Stockholm, e. g. in the Sturehof, are an absolute must. Situated in the heart of the shopping district, the restaurant has numbered among the best places to eat in Stockholm since 1897. Diners are a mixture of younger and older Stockholm businesspeople as well as international visitors. You are located in the heart of Sweden’s capital city, so try to grab a table on the terrace or near a window (www.sturehof.com). Right around the corner from the Sturehof is another Stockholm institution, the Östermalms Saluhall. It ranks among the ten best and most beautiful market halls in the world. You can find anything you crave here: meat, sausages, game and of course reindeer and elk as well as Swedish cheese. There are also many different kinds of fresh, smoked and marinated fish and all types of seafood in a quality seldom found anywhere else. In addition to numerous

The best thing to do is ask one of the natives, who are generally very willing to help (www.ostermalmshallen.se). Those who love exotic cuisine will feel right at home in the Farang: Asian fusion dishes with influences from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Indonesia are served here. The industrial hall creates a cool, modern atmosphere – a mixture of dining hall, cocktail bar, lounge and open kitchen. The Farang is a gathering place for chic Stockholm society as well as designers and artists (www.farang.se). For a fantastic view over the roofs of Stockholms, head to the Gondolen. According to manager Ragnar Boman, natives love to enjoy the view over a glass of “ginger drops,” the restaurant’s own special concotion made from fresh ginger, vodka, lemon liqueur and lemon juice (www.eriks.se).

Green oases As soon as the winter has passed, the inhabitants of Stockholm pour outside in droves to enjoy the first rays of sunshine – and that at temperatures that would seem a little cool to most of the rest of us. There is more than enough green space for soaking up the sunshine thanks to a huge nature preserve located on 27 square kilometers of land in the middle of the city center. The Ekoparken is also perfect for exploring by bike. Nature is generally very important to the inhabitants of the city. There was good reason why Stockholm was recognized as Europe’s first Green Capital in 2010: for its sophisticated infrastructure system that helps to minimize emissions of greenhouse gases. Buses, for example, run on ethanol or biogas. The city’s objective is to be completely independent of fossil fuels by 2050. More and more restaurants and cafés are seeking to protect the environment as well. A shining example is the café Rosendals Trädgård (www.rosendalstradgard.se), located on the island of Djurgåden in the middle of Rosendal’s Garden. Old, gnarled apple trees, green meadows, colorful flowers and lots of twittering birds – salads, soups, sandwiches and homemade cakes are served in this miniature paradise. The café uses organic and biodynamic ingredients, some of which are grown in its own garden. Residents of Stockholm are also fond of holding weddings here. This comes as no surprise considering the tranquil beauty of this little patch of earth. ■

No one can live without them in summer

Wedges WEDGE HEELS. First introduced in 1936 by the designer Ferragamo. Look best on tall women, for example with chino pants.

Thong sandals CASUAL. Also known as thong sandals or flip-flops. Can be worn with almost anything. Least suited for the office.

T-Stripes TRENDY T-THONG. They were already around back in the 1930s. They make the foot look shapely and are best suited to skirts and dresses.

First, thoroughly remove all old nail polish. This should always be done moving from the nail bed to the tip of the nail, not the other way around. Bits of leftover polish could otherwise become trapped under the cuticle. Then apply a base coat. This smoothes out the nail and enables the colored polish to adhere better. It also protects the nail against yellow discoloration from dark polishes. Once the base coat is completely dry, apply your favorite color polish: Always start with one brush stroke in the middle and then move left and right to the edges.

its traces. And unfortunately it has been a few weeks since the last pedicure too. But taking a stroll in new summer shoes is only a real treat with well-groomed princess feet. How can they be transformed overnight? Very easily: Step out of those old socks and into foot care heaven. Ideally you should get off to a relaxed start with a warm, cleansing footbath at 36 degrees Celsius or 97 degrees Fahrenheit. That optimally prepares the skin for the care to follow, softens the cuticles so that they can be pushed back and enables easier removal of callouses as well. The feet should be soaked in a mixture of, for example, water, sea salt, olive oil, cream and dash of lavender oil for at least 15 minutes. Salt crystals in water are ideal for exfoliation. Lightly calloused skin and excess cuticles can then be gently massaged away. ❯❯

Slingbacks OPEN HEEL. This classic was worn by female film stars in the 1930s. Ideal for combining with outfits such as jeans or that little black dress.

What really helps the feet

The cream treatment Where does it hurt? Tips for minor emergencies A day spent in strappy sandals or highheeled peeptoes may result in sore spots on your heels or between your toes created by pressure and friction. If painful pressure points and blisters develop, give your feet a rest in comfortable shoes that have already been broken in. A warm foot bath with disinfecting sea salt and lavender oil will help soothe the skin. Blisters should never be cut open. Apply a special bandage with a gel cushion instead. Creams with healing panthenol are ideal once the blister has begun to subside. A cooling foot spray and a little massage with nourishing oils will do wonders for tired, strained feet: Finish off by firmly pushing the thumbs through the four “grooves” between the toes.

Beauty Meeting A question, Ms Fenchel . . . EXPERT TI P

SOS SKIN CARE

❯❯ Afterwards dry your feet well, especially between your toes. This prevents foot fungus. If calloused skin is still left on the balls of the feet, heels or toes, it can be gently rubbed off with a special foot file. Be careful, though. If you remove too much even more will grow back. When shortening the nails, it is best to use nail scissors to cut them straight across, not round and not too short so that the nail cannot grow into the skin. Then file the nails in the direction of growth. That seals the cut edges. Before moisturizing your feet you can spray them with rose water, for example. That has a moisturizing effect as well. Rose water is also an ideal companion for summer shopping trips when feet quickly become tired and swollen. Now massage in a foot cream or body oil, put your feet up, let the moisture absorb and voilà ■

A balm for the feet For the most part, minor imperfections can usually be eliminated overnight, but anyone who wants soft, callous-free feet on a longterm basis should moisturize their feet daily. It takes about four weeks for the effects of the treatment on the feet to become visible, then a pumice stone is no longer necessary. The feet have only a few sebaceous glands. As a result, the skin here rapidly becomes dry and cornification occurs. Special foot creams prevent sweat, odors and foot fungus as well as promoting regeneration of the skin. Ideally the cream should be applied generously each evening before going to bed and then be allowed to absorb.

Marlen W., via e-mail I really enjoyed reading the unusual tips on Dubai in the last issue of “natural woman.” In particular, I was positively surprised that the luxury oasis is now offering its inhabitants and European expats and tourists organic foods in special organic cafés, as well as natural cosmetics.
