editorial

Dear Readers, Do you share our view that for the world to have a future, to be truly modern and progressive, we need to focus our values on all that is natural, sustainable, ecological and socially responsible? Top model Naomi Campbell, for instance, is having a zero-energy house built for her – an environmentally friendly and extraordinarily chic vacation home. To be sure, not everyone can afford that sort of luxurious eco-house. But luckily we can also add a little “green glamour” to our lives whenever we wish. That’s what popular actress Christiane Paul, our new brand ambassador, does. In addition to using natural cosmetics, she also lives in a environmentally conscious way that can truly be described as exemplary. Read our special feature on this topic starting on page 8. A way to combine the beautiful with the good – that’s what we want to offer our consumers with our premium natural cosmetics. Our principles were validated at the Clean Tech Media Awards in Berlin, an important German sustainability award. Our skincare products and makeup, based on natural ingredients, were very well received by the celebrity guests at the gala (page 16). We invite you too to discover, in this new issue of “natural woman,” how natural cosmetic products and natural makeup can make our world just a little more glamorous and sustainable.

Nostalgia The 1920s – a journey back to the age of glamour

T

he applause just wouldn’t stop when director Michel Hazanavicius stepped onto the stage at this year’s Oscar awards. He received five copies of the coveted trophy for “The Artist,” his grand declaration of love for silent movies. In his 100-minute-long masterpiece, he brings the feeling of the 1920s back to life. Entirely without words. The film’s magic arises above all from the expressive blackand-white images that tell stories of 1920s flair and of transformation – an economic boom, women’s emancipation and a revolution in fashion. Did the director have any idea what a wave of nostalgia he would trigger with “The Artist”? Designers like Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Ralph Lauren are currently bringing the 1920s back onto the runway with flapper dresses, feather boas and beads. Hollywood stars are just as excited about this trend; Keira Knightley, Michelle Williams and Katherine Heigl all strode across the red carpet to film premieres and awards ceremonies wearing styles that revisit the fashion moment that was the 1920s. They

wore their hair in elegant finger waves and wore knee-length dresses with plenty of tulle, luscious beaded and feathered ornaments and breathtaking makeup.

Seductive elegance for a new kind of self-confidence Women in the 1920s were already bidding farewell to false modesty. After World War I, women had to enter the workforce and take over many tasks that in the past had been performed by men. To balance out their daily routine in the office they sought out pleasurable leisure activities and enjoyed their newly acquired independence to the fullest. Physical activities like rowing and hiking were no longer taboo for women. In the evenings they went out to the cinema. Marlene Dietrich in particular provided them with a new role model as a “femme fatale.” Above all, women discovered nightlife for themselves. They danced the Charleston, the foxtrot and the tango with wild abandon, and when the occasion called for it, they accessorized

Long Lasting Volume Mascara black 10 contains resin from the sala tree, which ensures improved adherence and long-lasting color. Liquid Eye Liner black 01 can, thanks to its delicate foam applicator, be applied with great precision. It is fragrance-free and therefore especially suited for the delicate eye area. Kohl Pencil black 09 further emphasizes your eyes. With Powder Eye Shadow beige 22 & stone 31 you can, depending on the time of day, create a discreet shimmer or more strongly accentuate your eyes. Lip Gloss nude 11 is suitable for a shimmery daytime look but can also be worn over lipstick in the evening to get more shine. Lip Contour Pencil red 10 perfects the outline of your lips. Lip Color celebrity red 54 & dark cherry 65 give lips elegant, breath-taking color for day and evening.

Get the Look! with an elegant cigarette holder and a glass of gin or champagne. To match this mood, fashion also became more permissive; skirts and dresses got shorter and more seductive. Coco Chanel came up with the wildly successful “little black dress.” Striking makeup went along with all this new-found self-confidence. Red lipstick made its grand entrance, mascara was applied thickly to the lashes and eyes were framed with black eyeliner.

You too can look ready for the silver screen

In the evening, elegant women turned into shimmering divas If you too are getting the urge to time travel to the Golden Twenties, you can let yourself be whisked away by ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND’s “Classic Glamour” fall and winter looks. The look is based on strong, classy reds for lips and striking opulence for eyes. And here’s how you get it: First, apply a neutral base layer to your eyelids and fix with powder. Then, starting at the inner corner of the upper eyelid, draw a line toward the outside with “Liquid Eye Liner black 01.” The liner contains glycerin and mineral pigments that ensure a natural tone without a appearing overly severe. Next, depending on the occasion, apply either “stone” or “beige” powder eyeshadow with a small brush, following the line of the upper lashes and smudging it up to the fold of the eyelid. Then brush your lashes several times with “Long Lasting Volume Mascara black 10.”

Hair Soft finger waves and a cheeky bob were typical for the era.

Jewelry Don’t hold back, even on your head! Sparkly rhinestones or outrageous feather boas and hats are all allowed.

Makeup With such striking accessories, the makeup also has to draw everyone’s attention. Both eyes and mouth may be dramatically emphasized.

For this glamorous look, it’s alright to go to extremes Use “celebrity red” or “dark cherry” for sensuous lips. You can, depending on the time of day, select a more intense or darker shade of red for your lips. With red, perfection is especially important. To make lips look smoother and fuller, lighten them first with a base layer. Then choose a contour pencil of the same color as the lipstick, apply it at the corners of your mouth and smudge it inward across your lips. Finally, apply lipstick with a brush, powder it and apply it again – this makes the color last significantly longer. Now you are ready: Decked out in golden 20s nostalgia, there’s nothing to hold you back from making a seductive, elegant appearance. n

BÖRLIND Lead Developer Guylaine Le Loarer What are natural lipsticks made of? At ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND we use exclusively high-quality natural ingredients, meaning firm waxes with high melting points like beeswax, carnauba wax and candelilla wax. We add soothing cocoa and shea butter for soft, supple lips. Organic castor oil helps distributes the pigments that provide color and shine. Hyaluronic acid also prevents lips from drying out when it’s cold and windy.

What ingredients do we not use, and why? We do not use synthetic raw ingredients like silicone oils and petroleum-based ingredients; after all, when you wear lipstick you automatically consume some of it too. Furthermore, these substances can trigger allergies or skin irritation. We also leave out substances derived from dead animals, like carmine. The red pigment carmine is obtained from dried female cochineals, and this insect-derived substance is also suspected of being an allergen.

A sought-after actress stands up for what she believes in, working for a more environmentally just future and as a natural cosmetics ambassador for ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND.

S

he traded a highly respected profession for work that’s more often considered a labor of love when she finally gave up her work as a medical doctor in 2004 in order to pursue acting as a career. Acting was her passion even before it became her career, and she has been in front of the camera since 1991. She is a sought-after “jewel” in the film sector who prefers to choose roles that mean a lot to her personally, roles in which she sees something special. “I like to look for characters that at first I have no idea how to play and don’t know if I even can play them,” she says. She doesn’t mind if the part is small – as long as it’s demanding. One example is the three-part film for the German TV channel ZDF, “Das Adlon. Ein Hotel. Zwei Familien. Drei Schicksale.” (“The Adlon. One Hotel. Two Families. Three Destinies.”), which is scheduled to be broadcast in spring of 2013. “In this historical epic, I have a small but splendid supporting role as a photographer with an American accent,” says Christiane Paul.

Comedies, mysteries, children’s movies: she has been in front of the camera for 20 years This film version of the story, with Marie Bäumer, Ken Duken, Jürgen Vogel and Heino Ferch, brings stories about the legendary Berlin Hotel, the Adlon, back to life. Paul, who has won the Max Ophüls Prize, the Bavarian Film Prize and the Golden Camera

Prize, works primarily in the genres of feature films and madefor-TV dramas. But there is one area in which she is definitely not just acting – her involvement in sustainability issues. In this other passion that is vital to her, she is entirely herself. She is as authentic, captivating and convincing in her “ecological mission” as she is in front of the camera. And she does all that without coming across as finger-wagging, self-righteous zealot. If you talk with her about climate change, a topic that has been occupying her for years, her expression grows serious with concentration. After a few seconds, this ethereal beauty speaks her mind:“The thing that’s still missing is the networking, cooperation among the worlds of science, energy companies and industry. After all, many companies already have ideas about how to decrease their CO2 output. But all that just isn’t enough to actually counteract climate change. What we need is a broad critical mass.” We asked her whether she thinks that the designation of 2012 as the year of sustainability science will change anything. “More than anything, there have to be a lot of people doing their utmost in society.” When Christiane Paul describes her climate-friendly lifestyle, she likes to quote Jonathan Safran Foer, author of the book “Eating Animals,” from which she learned a great deal:“He put it very concisely. He said becoming a vegetarian is a radical change, but it’s just an individual change. 100 million people who each forego the steak they usually eat once a week means 100 million

Biographical summary Christiane Paul, born on March 8, 1974 in East Berlin, is an actress, author and mother. She started her career as a model at the age of 16. While she attended medical school she also worked as an actress and attended the Lee Strasberg Institute in New York. In 1993 she

received her first leading role, in “Deutschfieber” (“German Fever”). She was involved with World AIDS Day campaigns (2005, 2008, 2009) in Germany and the UN Climate Conference (2009) and supports the “Your Voice Against Poverty” project as well as UNICEF.

fewer meat meals. You can apply that to many areas of life,” says Paul. Reading her book “Das Leben ist eine Öko-Baustelle” (“Life is an Ecological Construction Site”), which Paul researched for three years together with author Peter Unfried and launched an attempt to live in an environmentally conscious way for one year, makes it clearer just how intensively Paul has dealt with topics around the global climate crisis.

»ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND has everything that I expect from high-quality, environmentally friendly products.«

For her, living in a more environmentally conscious way includes natural cosmetics as well “Of course, as a working mother with two small children you keep coming up against your limits,” says Christiane Paul. “So, my life is indeed an ecological construction site, but it feels right,” she explains. You can, in fact, see the foundation of her construction site: “I get electricity from environmentally sustainable sources and embrace all the usual tips for saving energy in the home,” she says, as a first example. For catered meals on set she selects vegetarian delicacies, and at home the menu increasingly features tofu, grain burgers and soy sausages as well as regional organic foods. She describes herself as a “flexitarian” and eats a maximum of one pound of meat per week. She books flights only when necessary for professional reasons. And she uses a car only when there is no other way to solve transportation logistics. That means you’ll often see Christiane Paul pedaling through the Schöneberg neighborhood of Berlin on her “Christiana bike,” a cargo bike with a solid box between two front wheels. With her bike, transporting children and shopping isn’t a problem. Natural cosmetics are another building block on Christiane

Paul’s ecological construction site. Her profession is hard on her sensitive skin, and for that reason she has, for many years, preferred natural cosmetics. “I am quite happy with the products from ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND. They are high-quality cosmetics from a German company with a strong tradition, and they meet all of my expectations. They are of excellent quality, feel good on your skin and offer the added value of being environmentally friendly products. A lot of shared interests connect me to the Lindner family,” says the actress. No doubt there are a lot of other important environmental building blocks that will enrich Christiane Paul’s canon of values. For she believes that if you don’t do anything, you are still doing something. You are, for example, deciding to allow global warming to continue. “I’m not interested in espousing values, but rather in doing what’s possible,” she says, and adds that “a 21st-century environmental activist is no longer someone who just carries a frog across the road, but someone who takes full responsibility as a citizen and as a human being.” n

I

t’s wise to be cautious about any commitment one makes, and ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND’s new brand ambassador is very careful about whom she publicly endorses. Even though Christiane Paul has been using these premium cosmetics from our southern German company for a long time and does not need to be convinced, she finds it important to take a look behind the scenes and learn a little more. “After all, how many people get a chance to see close up how natural cosmetics are made?” the actress points out , looking forward to a day spent among test tubes, raw materials from around the world, first drafts of recipes, jars and bottles and filling equipment. “At BÖRLIND, everything from the initial idea to the finished product takes place right here in Calw. In terms of the environment, I find that to be really exemplary,” says Paul. “I like the fact that the raw materials are organically grown or wildcrafted, that the organic botanical oils come from first pressings and that no paraffin, petroleum or silicone is used.” Daniela and Michael Lindner are pleased about the visit from their new brand ambassador; as Daniela Lindner says, Paul “suits us perfectly because of her natural radiance and her involvement in sustainability issues.”“And,” laughs Christiane Paul, “once I have discovered something that works for me, I stick to it!” For she has already found her skincare favorites:“The Creme Sorbet and the Aquanature moisturizer give my sensitive, moisture-poor mixed skin type exactly what it needs.” “And how would you summarize your day, Ms. Paul?” asks Daniela Lindner. “One of the things I learned today is how the shea butter is made in the fair trade project in Mali. I hadn’t known that a marvelously nourishing botanical oil can be obtained from these special nuts. It’s really great that BÖRLIND is also supporting African families with this project. The Splendor of the Gods Journey to the realm of the Incas with amalur Golden delights: Let yourself be enchanted by myths and cultures from centuries past. Natural cosmetics truly can be so exciting!

W

oman set aside many hours for the care of their bodies and their skin. Golden disks adorned the ears of the men. Signs of immeasurable wealth. In the 13th century, this powerful Indian kingdom in the highlands of what is now Peru had a treasure that was hidden away from the rest of the world – gold. Vast quantities of gold. Maybe it was gold’s perpetual radiance that so impressed the Incas. They did not, in any event, use it as a currency. They crafted the gold into jewelry, works of art and ceremonial objects. During this splendid era in history, women and men saw themselves as daughters and sons of the sun. In addition to the sun god, Inti, the rulers of the Inca were also honored as gods. Perhaps your next trip abroad will include a visit to Urubamba Valley, the “Sacred Valley of the Incas.” But in the meantime, you can enjoy a home spa treatment filled with golden delights. Beauty secrets that have been passed down through the ages unfold in the “amalur” line of skincare products from TAUTROPFEN – a drop of paradise. An exciting adventure for your skin and your senses. n

ENTICING. Cacao shell powder makes amalur body exfoliator uniquely gentle and leaves your skin exquisitely soft.

The primary botanical ingredient of TAUTROPFEN amalur

Amaranth The Sacred Grain of the Andes A wildcrafted miracle ingredient Amaranth thrives at altitudes of 11,000 feet, in spite of drought, heat and the harsh climate of the high reaches of the Andes. Its bursts of flamered blossoms reach six feet into the air. Amaranth, also called “the gold of the Incas,” is one of humanity’s oldest useful plants. It is primarily the seeds of this grain, which resembles millet, that are used. The Incas of Peru used the amaranth plant as a basic food staple, a pigment and a central component of religious rituals, and it was as important to them as their gold. Most importantly, amaranth gave them valuable energy in the form of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Amaranth has gained a following in our own times as well; NASA considers amaranth so nutritious and so valuable that some of this ancient grain is taken along on every voyage into space. Many nutrition-conscious consumers also love these little seeds as puffed amaranth, for example, or as an ingredient in cereal and granola.

Nutritious oil The little round grains are less than a millimeter in diameter, meaning only a tiny amount of oil can be extracted from each one. The oil is, there-

TAUTROPFEN amalur – like a hidden treasure of the Incas Organic amaranth, jojoba and almond oil nourish mature, delicate skin. The kakadu plum contains vitamin C and protects and moisturizes;

fore, a very high-priced raw material. Amaranth oil, golden in color, contains over 70% unsaturated fatty acids, including membrane-strengthening polyunsaturated linoleic acid, protective palmitic acid, and moisture-retaining oleic acid. Its high percentage of squalane in particular (8 percent compared to olive oil’s 0.7 percent) makes amaranth oil so valuable. Squalane is a natural moisturizer that can also be distributed easily across the skin, is absorbed quickly and leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth. In addition, these oil components actually ensure that the skin’s own lipids do not oxidize.

Cosmetic uses Its incomparable cosmetic effectiveness means amaranth oil is a revitalizer par excellence, especially for mature, delicate and dry skin. It intensively promotes regeneration, protects cells from free radicals and prevents irritation from UV radiation. Amaranth oil actively supports the skin’s moisture content, helping it appear smooth and fresh, and thereby minimizing lines. And by the way, the word “amaranth” comes from the Greek “amaranthus,” meaning immortal or never wilting. So it is a plant for eternal beauty – what a wonderful symbol for this ingredient!

care

With a New Feeling of Lightness Understand your skin and give it what it needs

Bath or shower? Water-based or oil-based creams? Dry, sensitive skin or skin with eczema requires special attention.

L

ife feels light as a feather. Find the inner tranquility that helps you deal with everyday setbacks. Many people who suffer from extremely dry, itchy skin or even atopic dermatitis and eczema wish they could find just that. A basic fragrance-free and irritant-free skincare routine tailored to your skin will help your skin and your soul escape the vicious circle of itching and the scratching that then triggers more itching. Such a routine can replenish your skin’s lipids and supply it with the moisture it needs. For skin with eczema, it is also important to increase gamma linoleic acid levels. This fatty acid keeps skin supple and inhibits substances that trigger inflammation and itching.

The right basic skincare routine can stabilize the skin barrier and prevent itching Gamma linoleic acid for dermocosmetics is obtained primarily from borage or evening primrose oil. Dry skin also has reduced urea levels; applying this substance externally moisturizes and thus increases the skin’s elasticity. The golden rule of skincare is to moisturize twice a day. “It should be noted that for inflamed and draining eczema, water-based skincare products, like soothing oil-in-water emulsions, are preferable,” says Zaklina Savic of DADO SENS. Showering with lukewarm water is less stressful for the skin, and if you do like to take a bath once in a while, spend no longer than 15 minutes in the tub and keep the water temperature around 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Therapeutic oil baths can additionally support replenishment of the skin’s oils by creating an oil film that hinders evaporation after showering or bathing. Moisturizer should also be applied while the skin is still damp. For very dry areas of skin or eczema, creams with a higher oil content are ideal. Natural skincare makes life seem less stressful and boosts the feeling of well-being. n

Tested for Effectiveness and Tolerability THE BLUE MIRACLE. Borage seed oil relieves inflammation and inhibits itching.

“Medical skincare, naturally effective. In accordance with this principle, DADO SENS dermocosmetic products are regularly tested for good tolerability and effectiveness. Scientific studies are conducted in cooperation with external testing institutes and dermatologists. New products are also tested systematically by individuals who have the particular skin problem for which the products have been developed. Independent researchers then evaluate the data.

Clinically confirmed: medically significant Over the course of a four-week testing period, a group of subjects used ExtroDerm facial cleanser, intensive cream and skin balm. The investigating physician conducted regular interviews and assessments. This ExtroDerm study, in which the relevant area of application was extremely dry, sensitive, irritated skin and atopic eczema, produced the following results: 84 percent of the 24 subjects with eczema and seven subjects with dry, lipid-poor skin experienced significant improvement in the condition of their skin, both objectively and subjectively. WHITE GOLD. Dead Sea salt is known for its curative effects in atopic dermatitis.

ExtroDerm – for dry, sensitive skin A formula that contains urea and panthenol but no cortisone moisturizes skin and supports its own ability to retain moisture. Borage seed oil leaves skin satiny and soft and strengthens the hydrolipid layer. Dead Sea salt prevents irritation and inflammation. ExtroDerm is an ideal supplement to therapy for atopic dermatitis and psoriasis, even for small children. It decreases itching and flakiness. elcome to Germany’s green carpet: 1,000 invited guests, including many celebrities, came to Berlin for this “green” event. The focus was on companies that are using clean and innovative environmental technologies to show that sustainability and profitability are definitely not contradictory terms.

Supported by many stars: this German environmental and media prize was awarded for the fifth time GREEN GLAMOUR. Christiane Paul presented the environmental prize in the “Communication” category (above). Large selection of makeup (below).

16 | natural woman 2_2012

There were 89 applicants from Germany and other countries in the competition, which covers the seven categories of “Energy, Communication, Lifestyle, Air Travel, Mobility, Children and Music.” BÖRLIND’s new brand ambassador, sustainability activist Christiane Paul, announced the winner in the “Communication” category. That winner, Climate Media Factory UG of the University of Potsdam-Babelsberg, works with climate researchers and uses audiovisual media to convey the results of especially successful climate research projects. Another winner, from the “Lifestyle” category, was Seccua GmbH with its development assistance project: ultrafiltration equipment that turns 2,500 liters of unfiltered water per hour into microbe-free drinking water. For BÖRLIND it was a great honor to be an official Clean Tech Media Awards partner. The guests received high-quality natural cosmetics in a sustainable goody bag and were gorgeously made up for the gala using those products. BÖRLIND – Now CSE-Certified A new certification that deserves attention. The CSE (Certified Sustainable Economics) seal documents a company’s sustainability efforts. This new seal shows consumers that a company is acting responsibly, especially with regard to the three pillars of sustainability – ecology, social responsibility and economics. BÖRLIND’s internal sustainability standards already received certification from EcoControl in 2008. “That meant we had already surpassed the minimum requirements for sustainable company management,” says THE NEW SUSTAINABILITY BÖRLIND proprietor and Managing SEAL. Certified Sustainable Director Michael Lindner. “After all, Economics (CSE). we can only have nature if we have sustainability as well,” he adds. For this reason, BÖRLIND made it a priority to work with the Gesellschaft für angewandte Wirtschaftsethik (Society for Applied Economic Ethics), the EcoControl certification entity and five other pilot companies to bring the new CSE standard into being.

Cannes Can! An azure sea, plenty of stars and Golden Palms: the film festival on the Côte d’Azur

In May of every year, top film celebrities, including actors, directors and producers, head to Cannes for what is probably the world’s most important film festival.

the cold wind did give the otherwise so idyllic Boulevard de la Croisette an uncharacteristically melancholy appearance, but the festival itself was as spectacular as ever. The incredible program of films, which includes only world premieres, makes this the biggest film market of all. For lovers of great cinema, it is the event of the year.

T

BÖRLIND – Partner to German Films for the 65th Film Festival

hey are the people who turned this popular beach town in southern France into a cosmopolitan city. They are the people who enable Cannes, for two weeks out of the year, to overshadow its charming neighbors, like Nice and Monaco. And they’ve been doing it for 65 years. In May of 2012, Hollywood stars like Brad Pitt, Elijah Wood, Bruce Willis and Matthew McConaughey came to the film festival to stroll across the red carpet into the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, side by side with the most beautiful women in show business. They weren’t fazed by the raging storm that coincided with this year’s Cannes festival. The huge puddles, the sea of umbrellas, the driving rain and

And the natural cosmetics company from the Black Forest also had a premiere here. For the first time, ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND was also present in Cannes, as a partner of German Films, the informational and consulting center for the international marketing and distribution of German movies. BÖRLIND’s makeup artists worked on guests at the German Films reception, giving them stylish, glamorous looks using naturallybased makeup. Actress Christiane Paul was among those wearing natural cosmetics there. ANNEMARIE

And the Winner is … … Michael Haneke. For his harrowing drama called “Liebe” (“Love”), the Austrian director received the Golden Palm, the most important film award aside from the Oscars. And it was the second time within three years that he had done so! In 2009, the 70-year-old Haneke was recognized for the first time for “Das weisse Band” (“The White Ribbon”). In his current film, he tells the moving story of an 80-year-old couple who seem to be enjoying an idyllic old age together. But eventually George, the husband, has to accompany his beloved wife Anne, once his partner in intellectual discussion, as she experiences the effects of a stroke and approaches death. The film has been running in German theaters since September 12, 2012. It will presumably be available on DVD sometime in late 2012 or early 2013.

REJOICING. Director Michael Haneke (middle), along with his lead actors Emmanuelle Riva (2nd from left) and Jean-Louis Trintignant (2nd from right), accepts the award from announcers Audrey Tautou (left) and Adrien Brody (right).

BÖRLIND’s new brand ambassador, together with Daniela Lindner of BÖRLIND’s management team, was in attendance at the film festival. Both women are art and film aficionados, and apparently they had the right instincts when selecting films. The showing they really loved was the film “Liebe” (“Love”) by Michael Haneke.

There were 22 films in the competition, and the best one was awarded the Golden Palm Haneke, an Austrian director, won the competition and received that 19-leafed palm frond made of 24-carat gold and mounted on a simple, hand-polished piece of quartz. Winning the Golden Palm in Cannes is one of the great highpoints in the life of a filmmaker. The design of the “Palme d’Or” is based on Cannes’ coat of arms. This year, the jury consists of fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, Hollywood actress Diane Kruger, her colleague Ewan McGregor and five other members. How did Christiane Paul select Haneke’s succinct and unusual

drama to watch? She says that the film tells it like it is; at some point life ends, only love never dies. “This film shows us the harsh reality and presents us with the question of how to deal with the suffering of a person we love,” says Daniela Lindner. “After the premiere we had to sit in a restaurant with a glass of red wine for a while and just let everything we’d seen and experienced sink in,” remarks Christiane Paul. The film, they both say, is definitely worth seeing; topics like love, partnership, aging and death simply can’t always involve happy endings. “Haneke is a master and never spares his audience; he’s always truthful and clear. He is a director who does not caress his audience and say everything will be alright. He shows what things are really like. He deserves the prize,” declares the actress. In addition to the Golden Palm, the jury also awards prizes in categories such as male and female roles, direction and screenplay. And when the film festival ends, after 14 days and 300 film showings, one thing remains – ecstatic award winners and an impression of glamour, radiance and glory. Cannes sure can! n

hey are the beauty experience that has an immediate effect. Annemarie Lindner, founder of the BÖRLIND company, knew that back in 1956. The following excerpt from her biography describes the first wrinklesmoothing treatment successes for which she, as a natural cosmetics expert, was widely admired. “After the wax mask had been lying on the woman’s face for 15 minutes, I removed it. Oh no! I couldn’t believe my eyes. [...] The woman’s skin looked liked a zebra’s. She had white stripes on her forehead, around her eyes and around her mouth. What had happened? During her three-week vacation, the woman had tanned deeply, but her facial wrinkles had remained light. [...] I already knew that my mask was very effective. But I only learned how well it smooths the skin that evening. [...] After the evening lecture in Bensin I could have sold more

Argan oil This reddish-golden oil has an excellent balance of oleic, linoleic and palmitic fatty acids. It is especially nurturing for mature, dry and barrierdamaged skin.

Sesame oil Its high phytosterol and linoleic acid content helps the skin better regenerate itself. It absorbs quickly and is able to transport other active substances into deeper skin layers.

The Skin Pamperers Plant oils, the key to healthy skin Every natural cosmetic emulsion is based on high-quality, naturally pure oils from nuts, blossoms and seeds. And they have a unique effect on the skin. No other ingredient has this dual impact.

Jojaba oil Actually, jojoba oil is a wax. This ingredient, which is said to have been a favorite of many Indian peoples, is a classic in the world of cosmetics and is included in many, many recipes. Why? It is extraordinarily well-tolerated by the skin, protects against dehydration, provides vitamins A and E as well as essential fatty acids and has an anti-inflammatory effect. 24 | natural woman 2_2012

This fountain of youth for your skin is derived from the Damascus rose, perhaps the world’s most captivating floral fragrance. Its essential oils soothe and regenerate the skin and help it retain moisture. Ideal for mature, dry skin.

leaming white, sweet-smelling and pleasantly refreshing – that’s how our senses perceive a dab of cream. Morning and evening, when we scoop a little bit of it out of the jar, we also get the comforting feeling of doing something especially good for our skin. But beyond that, we don’t generally pay a lot of attention to this creamy little pleasure. When your breakfast or your pillow is calling, you usually leave the bathroom before your skincare products have even really been absorbed into your skin. Your thoughts aren’t really in the present moment, or in the same place your body is.

Each plant oil has a number of skin-friendly active ingredients You could, however, take just a little more time. After all, you can definitely feel what the cream is and does, even if you can’t really see it with your naked eye. In addition to water, plant oils and waxes are the most important basic substances in any natural cosmetic recipe. They gently caress your skin with every dab of moisturizer you apply. For people who develop natural cosmetics, these oils and waxes are the heart of every formulation, the perfect foundation for healthy skin. Their properties are unique and amazing. Botanical oils don’t just lend a cream its consistency and guarantee its quality;

they also deliver nutrients to the skin. Their composition is what allows them to do this. “Like attracts like,” and plant oils are the perfect complement to human skin. In the skin’s outermost layer, the hydrolipid layer, sebaceous glands produce exactly the same substances that are part of the spectrum of active ingredients in botanical oils: Lipids such as triglycerides as well as the fatty acids they contain, like linoleic and oleic acids, ceramides, lecithin and squalane, a fat-soluble substance. Together with older skin cells, water and sweat, these substances form the skin’s own barrier layer, which protects it from external forces like sunlight, microorganisms, and chemical and mechanical influences. Furthermore, this protective layer prevents too much water from escaping and ensures that the skin remains supple. Unfortunately, the skin’s protective system grows increasingly weaker as we age. As sebaceous gland activity decreases and cell production slows, the outer skin becomes more permeable, enabling more harmful substances to enter and more water to leave the skin. Dry areas, lines and wrinkles become visible. Plant oils naturally counter these deficiencies as the substances in those oils that are identical to those found in the skin gently increase the outer skin’s triglyceride levels. They contain unsaturated fatty acids and fat-soluble substances that regenerate the skin barrier, constitute a building block to stabilize cell membranes and protect the skin from UV radiation. The phytosterols in

plant oils even act as emulsifiers, binding to water and helping it penetrate into deeper layers of the skin. They are also thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect. In addition to fatty acids, plant oils’ highly effective cocktails also include other important skin-pampering ingredients, such as vitamins A and E. Jojoba, wheat germ, avocado and olive oils and shea butter, for example, are very rich in these vitamins, which regenerate, stimulate and protect skin cells. Some plant oils, such as almond oil and sea buckthorn oil, also contain tocopherols, a special form of vitamin E with antioxidant and circulation-stimulating properties.

Organically produced bodycare products are booming in Japan, and not just since the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Values like sustainability and social responsibility are increasingly important to the Japanese; this can be seen, among other things, in the shift they are making away from nuclear energy – a shift that for a long time was unthinkable.
