Great Synagogue
Fészek Artist Club
The Great Synagogue, also known as Dohány Street Synagogue is located at the beginning of Dohány utca. It is the largest synagogue in Eurasia and the second largest in the world, after the Temple Emanu-El in New York City. It seats 3,000 people and is a centre of Neolog Judaism. The synagogue was built between 1854 and 1859 in the Moorish Revival style, with the decoration based chiefly on Islamic models from North Africa and medieval Spain (the Alhambra). The synagogue was designed by the Viennese architect, Friedrich Ludwig Förster. The interior design is partly by Frigyes Feszl, the famous romantic designer who designed the attractive Vigadó Concert Hall at the Danube. The original synagogue was bombed by the pro-Nazi Arrow Cross Party on 3 February 1939. Used as a base for German Radio and also as a stable during WWII, the building suffered some severe damage during the Siege of Budapest. It was restored between 1991 and 1998.
The famous Fészek Artist Club – at the corner of Kertész and Dob streets - was established in 1901 by 100 artists. It provided a place both for socializing and for presenting the artists’ most recent works.
Jewish Cemetery The cemetery is located in the back of the Dohany synagogue. According to the Jewish traditions cemeteries can not be on the premises of the house of prayer. This graveyard is the result of tragic historical events during WWII. In 1944, the Dohány Street Synagogue was part of the Jewish Ghetto for the city Jews and served as shelter for a lot of people. Over two thousand of those who died in the ghetto from hunger and cold during the winter 19441945 are buried in the courtyard of the synagogue.
Dohány street – Theodore Herzl Dohány Street itself, a leafy street in the city center, carries strong Holocaust connotations as it constituted the border of the Budapest Ghetto. Theodore Herzl’s house of birth was next to the Dohány Street Synagogue. In the place of his house stands the Jewish Museum, which holds the Jewish Religious and Historical Collection, built in 1930 in accordance with the synagogue’s architectural style and attached in 1931 to the main building.
Memorial Wall
Kazinczy Synagogue The Kazinczy Street Synagogue is located at 29-31 Kazinczy street. It was built in 1912-1913 in art nouveau style based on the designs of the Löffler brothers. It served the orthodox community and formed part of a building complex including school and headquarter of the community. At present, the only operating mikveh in Hungary can be found at the building, and the synagogue can be visited.

Gozsdu udvar
Gozsdu udvar/courtyard is a scenic Budapest passage and building complex, a series of passages and courtyards connecting Király utca and Dob utca, having an exit at Király utca 13 and Dob utca 16. It was built at the very beginning of the 20th century by a Hungarian Romanian philanthropist, Mano Gozsdu. It was fully renovated in 2008. The promenade is hosting the Gouba, the open-air Sunday bazaar, offering design items (jewellery, clothes, accessories…), some antics, drawings, stationary, etc.

Klezmer
Show
Located right next to the Gozsdu udvar and Carl Lutz Memorial, Spinoza Ház is a project reviving the cultural life of the jewish quarter as it was before the WWII.
The Rumbach Street synagogue is located in 11-13 Rumbach street. It was built in 1872 to the design of the Viennese architect Otto Wagner. It served the socalled Status Quo Ante (moderate orthodox) community which preserved the traditional “pre-Congress” way of Judaic cult. The Moorish Revival synagogue has eight sides and while the interior is badly in need of restoration, the octagonal, balconied, domed synagogue intricately patterened andpainted in Islamic style is exquisitely beautiful. It was built not as an exact replica of, but as an homage to the style of the octagonal, domed Dome of the Rock Muslim shrine in Jerusalem.

By 1926 the club became the centrum of the artist life of Budapest. Already that time it was a privilege to become a club member. During the Communist era the club life continued to flourish providing an international and progressive artistic atmosphere, whilst the restaurant inside the building was the most famous and fashionable place, where all the “celebrities” of the socialist time gathered until the early 80-ies.

Appointed in 1942 as Swiss vice-consul in Budapest, Lutz began cooperating with the Jewish Agency for Palestine, issuing Swiss safe-conduct documents enabling almost 10,000 Jewish children to emigrate. Once the Nazis took over Budapest in 1944 and began deporting Jews to the death camps, Lutz negotiated a special deal with the Hungarian government and the Nazis: he had permission to issue protective letters to 8,000 Hungarian Jews for emigration to Palestine. Lutz then deliberately misinterpreted his permission for 8,000 as applying to families rather than individuals. He also set up some 76 safe houses around Budapest, declaring them annexes of the Swiss legation, where about 3,000 Jews found refuge. The memorial to Carl Lutz is in Dob utca, at the entrance of the former ghetto area. The statue was made by Tamás Szabó in 1991.
The last remaining section of the ghetto wall was demolished in 2006 during construction works. It was situated in the backyard of a building (No. 15 Király Street) and was originally an old stone wall made use by the Nazis in 1944 adding a line of barbed wire. The walls of the ghetto were typically older structures found on the area. A memorial wall was erected on the place in 2008, using some original material, but not matching the exact details.
