We are excited to be offering this unique lot in the 40th Red Roundup sale. This pick is one where for the first time we are opening up our whole replacement group for you the perspective buyer. These females are right at the core of our Lot genetic advancement and we feel they are the real world kind that will work for you. Many of them are of a different breeding line to many programs as we have raised and used our own herd bulls for many years. We are very stringent on our udder and feet selection in our breeding stock. We strive to produce cattle that are sound in their nature and productive in their function. The group was mated to our freshest herdsire Scarface who was last fall Stockade Roundup Champion Bull and Junior Division Champion at Farmfair. He is unique in his type with his clean smooth shoulder, moderate birthweight and tremendous muscle shape over his top and into his quarter. That coupled with a 80lbs birthweight and a 926 lbs 205 day weight with a weaning ratio of 113 and a well rounded set of EPD’s makes him all the more powerful genetically. He is also outcross bred being out of our 2011 U.S. National Champion Fat Tony and out of one of our top black red carrier cows GJP 269U. These females are the new generation at our place and come from a set of cows that in recent years have produced herd bulls for Northline, Moons, Triple L, C.D Land and Cattle, and L&V to name a few. He is one of the most influential Red Angus bulls ever in South America, having sold over 150,000 units of semen and producing easy fleshing, correct cattle with extra muscle shape. On the dam’s side she has Red Tres Marias Quebracho, the two time Palermo Grand Champion Male in 2001 and 2002. 52Y won her class at the AJAA open show in Bashaw this summer in a very competitive class of seven head. Here is just a March heifer that is sure to make alot of friends. She offers a different pedigree for most programs, a well balanced set of EPD’s and has all the makings to be a profitable female. Stretch 166Z is one of only two Real Deal daughters born on our ranch in 2012 and we are very pleased that she was selected for Red Roundup. 166Z is extremely deep bodied much like her mother but also maintains femininity through her front and has beautiful hair. She truly is a unique female in our herd. Her mother Stretch 4320P is a no miss cow that raised Hitch 38T, and also the bred heifer Stretch 16X that we sold at Red Roundup last year to Horizon Red Angus. Here is a heifer whose just a March baby that shouldn’t be underestimated. Biebird is a deep bodied, big topped heifer just like her dam. We have had an abundance of success selling her maternal brothers through our “On Target” Bull Sale. Biebird has a great disposition and a fantastic hair coat, all of which can be attributed to her sire, Red Lone Stone Pursuit 81W, known as “Sox”. Sox was Reserve Grand Champion at Agribition in 2010 and went on to Denver where he was well appraised and appreciated for his overall presence and volume, catching the attention of Silver Spurs and Jeffries Cattle Co. They combined their efforts to purchase the U.S. semen rights and Bone Creek of SK has purchased his walking services. Sox’s calves have followed his footsteps with their numbers and actual performance jumping off the charts. Sox 81W’s epd’s rank him in the top 1% of the entire breed for WW, YW and carcass, as well as the top 10% for REA. Pantera 5Z is a result of our embryo partnership with La Cabana La Pastoriza, the Orazi family, from Buenos Aires state, Argentina. The Orazi’s have one of the top Angus operations in Argentina, as many visitors from around the world observed on the World Angus Secretariat tour in 2011. We got to see the Brigadier bull in the fall of 2009, at nine years of age, and were impressed with how sound footed, easy fleshing and stout he was. His progeny and grand progeny have adapted very well to our climate and will be a big part of our breeding program in the future. Pantera 5Z combines Brigadier and the two time Palermo champion Quebracho into a very nice fronted show heifer prospect with extra top and rump shape. The Paparozzi say a picture is worth a thousand words, and the more I analyze the GRP picture of 217Z the more I agree. Funny how a “shot in the dark” breeding on a heifer could turn out so right. This might have been the year I wished my best heifer calf went “M.I.A” in the bush when Scott was out selecting (haha). But Red Round-up is all about stepping up and representing our breed…so here she is, Kuruba 217Z. In my mind she is the deepest ribbed, widest based heifer we have raised, but maybe the most exciting part is its only September and she’s already a “teddy bear” full of hair. Her dam 217X was purchased from this very sale two years ago and has definitely earned her keep. Reserve Grand Champion Single Purebred Heifer at Canadian Bull Congress in 2011, and mother of the year on this sweet fronted tank of a heifer. The sire Crimson Jewels was a “Young Gun” here in 2010, and is being called one of the best Sequoia sons going. But if generation #1 is not enough just flip back…Boomer 803B, Boom Town 260D, Divide 8J…and the Aster cow line. Selling 5 doses of Red Towaw Indeed 104H Red Towaw Indeed 104H has truly earned the title breed legend and is one of the most popular bulls to come along in a long while. He has done it without the hype of a personal show career or outlier EPDs. He gained his popularity slowly by producing correct, stout, easy fleshing sons and incredibly productive and sound uddered females. His career started with being half of the Reserve Champion Pair of Bulls in the ‘98 Red Roundup Bull Furturity and selling privately to Six Mile Ranch that fall. Before that his dam was the 1995 National Champion Female at Famfair as a two year old. Many top operations used Indeed and were impressed with his progeny. Sons like Mastermind, Integrity, Timberlake, Very Interesting and Winchester left their impact on the breed, but it is the daughters that have really jumped to the forefront. Six Mile Ranch have been incredibly successful showing females including Serebl 93N, Lassie 377P, and the World Angus Forum 2009 Champion Female Red Six Mile Bayberry 256T . Indeed has left his mark not only in Canada, but also the United States and Australia, and was just introduced to Argentina where a pregnant recip carrying an Indeed calf sold for $6,000 US. Mystery Lot ... what will it be in 2012?

Purebred Breeder of the Year The Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society would like to congratulate T BAR K Ranch, Kevin & Kim Dorrance for being recognized as the 2012 Purebred Breeder of the Year!

T BAR K Ranch is a 4th generation family ranch owned and operated by Kevin and Kim Dorrance and family along with Kevin’s parents Tom and Irene of Wawota, Saskatchewan. Located amongst the rolling and treed hills along the Moose Mountains, the original ranch was homesteaded in 1889 by Kevin’s Great Grandfather and has truly withstood the test of time. The ranch consists of 22 quarters of owned and leased land which is all seeded to pasture and hay. The first purebred cattle on the ranch were Horned Herefords in 1921 of which a herd of 60 cows remains today. Their herd of 175 commercial cows were dispersed in 2011 to lighten their work load and allow them more time to focus solely on the purebred herds. In 1994 Kevin made the decision to diversify the cowherd and purchased the first Red Angus cows. “We got into the Red Angus breed because we liked what they had to offer to the commercial cattle industry” states Kevin and Kim. “The Red Angus cows are good mothers and make great cows. The bulls are tough, sound, cover a lot of cows and they last. Their biggest asset though is that they cross very well with other breeds.” Kevin and Kim are very tough on their cowherd and demand that they bring in a big calf every year. The herd of 140 Red Angus cows are swath or bale grazed all winter until they begin calving in March. “Our cows have to be very easy doing or they don’t stay around!” The swath and bale grazing also allows them to get as much production out of their land as possible with minimal inputs. Rotational grazing has played an integral role in their grass management along with the swath and bale grazing for the past 21 years. Over the years Kevin has been asked to speak at several information days and seminars on such topics. The Dorrance’s have an extensive AI and ET program and have always purchased the best bulls they could find over the years. They have sold live and frozen genetics to a host of countries around the world consisting of Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, England,

Sweden, Ireland, Russia, Kaczachstan, South America and the United States. Marketing of the T BAR K bulls used to consist of consigning to several bull sales every spring and by private treaty but they found this was very time consuming so in 2009 they started their own annual bull sale which is held on the ranch every April. The bull sale offering consists of both yearling and two year old bulls which have been successfully sold to many repeat customers as well and to many new customers. T BAR K Ranch advertise their cattle at local trade shows throughout the spring and fall. They have successfully exhibited at all of the major fall shows in western Canada over the years winning many Division Champion and Champion banners along the way for both their Red Angus and Horned Herefords. The Dorrance’s have exhibited purebred and commercial cattle at all 41 Canadian Western Agribition’s since its inception and were recognized during CWA’s 35th anniversary as being one of only four farm families to have done so. Quite a feat! Kevin and Kim feel Agribition is a great event for them to stay in contact with their commercial and purebred customers and have no plans of breaking their tradition anytime soon! Over the years Kevin and Kim have judged numerous cattle shows including 4-H, junior shows, various breed shows and several national shows and love the experiences they have gained and the people they have met along the way. The latest highlight for them was judging the first National Junior Hereford show in Denmark in 2011. The Dorrance’s are very active in their community and have belonged to many organizations. Kevin has held many positions on livestock boards, Agribition committees, Saskatchewan Stock Growers, Saskatchewan Hereford Association and currently serves as Past President for the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society.

Their family’s love for the cattle industry has run deep through many generations with Kevin and Kim’s children being the 5th generation and appears to show no signs of changing in the foreseeable future. “It is a tough yet rewarding business to be in” state Kevin and Kim “but it is the friendships you make along the way that make it all worthwhile!” Congratulations to T BAR K Ranch, Kevin and Kim Dorrance and family for being named the Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society’s 2012 Purebred Breeder of the Year.

Commercial Breeder of the Year The Canadian Red Angus Promotion Society would like to congratulate Sandhills Colony, Mike Wurz for being recognized as the 2012 Commercial Breeder of the Year!

Established in 1935, the Sandhills Colony is a diversified agricultural operation located near Beiseker, Alberta. Specializing in grain, cattle, sheep, dairy and chickens, the Colony’s 8000 acre land base provides enough pasture land and cultivated land for their 600 head cow calf operation.

At the helm of the operation is Mike Wurz, Colony Manager, who is following in his father’s footsteps Peter Wurz Sr. who purchased the Colony’s first purebred Red Angus bull in 1979 from Beiseker Red Angus, Peter and Maxine Schmaltz. Since that time an average of 4 bulls per year are purchased from local breeders. Mike appreciates the fact that he can go into a local breeders cowherd and see the mother cows in production and evaluate their feet, legs and temperament which assist him in his selection of bulls to purchase through the sale. When Mike is selecting bulls to use on the cowherd he utilizes his knowledge of cattle to visually select the bulls he wants to purchase. Thickness, feet, legs, testicles and disposition are all considered. Mike continues to oversee the cowherd along with Jerry and other valuable Colony members. The herd of 600 head are approximately ¾ Red Angus. Any cows with bad feet or udders or over the age of 13 are culled. Mike feels if a cow is left to long by age 14 they can suddenly begin to fail on you.

The heifers begin calving February 1 and the cows begin March 1. By the end of April everything is done calving. They stick to a 60 day breeding program and any cows that don’t fall into that are culled as well. Mike states “the Red Angus cattle are excellent for crossbreeding. They are good uddered, have less pink eye, are high in fertility and are excellent mothers. We have a lot less troubles in the spring with the Red Angus cows.”

All of the calves are weaned by mid September with the best heifers being hand selected and kept for replacements and everything else goes on feed in their feedlot to be fattened. The calves are weaned off with an average weight of 600 lbs. and are fattened to 1400 lbs. with an average daily gain of 3.6 lbs. They are then marketed through Cargill at High River. The 2000 acres of pasture land is all cross fenced and set up on a rotational grazing program of every 10 days in the summer which allows the native grass re-growth time but also allows for ease in doctoring any cattle that need to be as all of the cow work is done on horseback. Wherever Mike travels, he is an avid promoter of the Red Angus breed and is the difference that has been made to the Sandhills Colony’s beef program.
